You thought you had gotten used to Jungkook’s weird ways, thought nothing would faze you anymore, but clearly, you were wrong. Because when you walked out just to see Jungkook next to his car with his hands in front of his eyes, you couldn’t help but stop dead in your tracks and frown.
“What are you doing?”
“Oh, cabbage!” he smiled, acting like he didn’t look crazy with his hands pressed to his eyes. “You’re here!”
You hummed. “Yeah...”
And as weirdly irritating it was that he was standing in front of you with his stupid eyes covered, for a moment you were glad he couldn’t see you. Because he looked gorgeous, stunning. You hated to admit it, but it was a fact. With the red knee-long robe rippling through the air, the golden accents and flame details along the hem of the costume, he looked scarily similar to the fire prince himself, the very fire prince you fell in love with when you were young and first laid eyes on him. And now Jungkook looked exactly like him.
“Jeon, what are you doing?” you repeated. “Why are you covering your eyes?”
“I didn’t wanna spoil the surprise,” Jungkook returned, and you frowned.
“Surprise? What surprise?”
“Please, you know.”
You scrunched up your face. “I don’t.”
He sighed then at your cluelessness, acting as if you had just told him you didn’t know what 1 + 1 equaled.
“Well, you.”
It took your brain a short moment to catch up with what he was saying, and when you finally got it, you looked off to the side and hissed under your breath, heart beating a bit too fast for your liking.
“Did you hit your head?” you pressed, irritation accompanying every word, but Jungkook only gave you a grin. Your jaw grew tighter at the sight of it but so did your heart, thumping a bit louder in your chest.
“Wait, you are wearing your costume, right, cabbage?” he asked.
“No, Jeon,” you said, dry as ever. “I’m not wearing anything.”
He pretended not to hear. “Is that a yes?”
“That’s a no. I’m naked.”
“Cabbage,” Jungkook sighed, “stop it.”
“Stop what? Answering your question?” You raised a brow even though he couldn’t see you. “Usually that’s what people want when they ask something.”
His face twisted in something you couldn’t pinpoint. It made you grin.
You continued on, “Getting worked up picturing me naked, huh?”
There was something so satisfying about seeing Jungkook gritting his teeth and clenching his jaw, about, for once, being the one that was grinning and enjoying themselves.
Jungkook let out something that sounded like a laugh and a sigh. He was shaking his head. “Are you drunk?”
“Not denying it, huh?” you just teased, scrunching your nose in delight.
He pressed the tip of his tongue to the roof of his mouth before digging it into his cheek, shifting on his feet. At this point, you were practically beaming, grin reaching from one cheek to the other.
“You’re impossible sometimes, cabbage,” he told you quietly, and you rolled your eyes at his comment.
“Sure, yeah, I’m impossible sometimes,” you snorted.
“Hey! What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Oh, nothing. It means nothing, Mr Casually Waits In Front Of My Class With A Bouquet Of Roses For Everyone To See.”
“You did that too!”
You clenched your jaw at his words, knowing very well he was right. Still, you were exasperated to be accused, even if it was rightfully. It didn’t help that Jungkook was still pressing his hands against his eyes, making you feel like a crazy person for arguing with him.
“But I didn’t have a bouquet of roses with me,” you tried and cringed at your weak counter.
He saw through it, snorting. “You still waited for me.”
You pressed your mouth into a line. Words danced on the tip of your tongue but you refused to let them out. There was no way in hell that you were going to admit to Jungkook that the only reason why you waited in front of his class was because you were too scared to text him to meet up with you, fearing he was going to reject you.
“Whatever. Just open your eyes, so we can go,” you hissed, quick to move on. But he didn’t do as you said.
“Well, are you wearing your costume?”
Groaning, you gave him the answer he wanted, “Yeah.”
And at that, Jungkook lit up like a Christmas tree, bright as the stars dotting the sky tonight. His mouth split into a gigantic grin, and you were sure his eyes were sparkling too, the same way they had when he had pulled out the costumes.
“How do you look?”
You frowned. “What do you mean how do I look? What do you want me to say?”
“You know what I mean. Do you look good?”
You blinked at him a handful of times. “Well, I’m not about to say I look ugly, Jeon.”
“I-”
“Just open your eyes!” you hissed, crossing your arms in front of your chest and tapping your foot.
Jungkook took a deep breath. “Alright, fine. I will.”
And slowly, he lowered his hands. Instead of opening his eyes though, they remained shut.
“Jeon, I said open your eyes and not just-”
You stopped when Jungkook finally looked at you, blinking a few time to rid the dark spots that had formed while he had his hands pressed to his eyes. When his gaze found you, you stilled. Something about the way he was staring at you, a look plastered on his face that you couldn’t read, made you freeze, heart stopping in your chest as you awaited his reaction.
He didn’t say anything, his eyes raking up and down your form, taking you in. You shifted on your feet, unable to do much else. Silence stretched between you. It felt agonisingly long.
Your arms wrapped around your middle, a poor attempt of yours to cover up. It snapped Jungkook out of his trance.
“Cabbage, holy shit,” he began and took a step towards you, his mouth dropping open, shaking his head like he couldn’t believe that you were standing in front of him, that you were real.
“You look fucking amazing.”
The words were whispered, quiet, but they had your cheeks burning like he had yelled them at the top of his lungs, like he had announced them to the entire world. You turned away.
“Look at you,” Jungkook said, mouth agape, eyes sparkling. “You’re so gorgeous, cabbage-”
“Stop,” you tried, but your voice wasn’t much, embarrassment colouring it. You shook your head, convinced he was just teasing you, attempting to make you flustered for his own amusement like he always did.
“Don’t make fun of me-”
“What? Make fun of- no!” Three big strides. That was all it took for him to close the distance between you and him. Jungkook fixed you with his eyes, his head shaking from left to right. “I’m not. I would never, cabbage.”
You snorted. “You’re lying-”
“Lying?” He frowned. “I’m not lying- I’d never lie to you, cabbage.”
Jungkook paused, waiting for you to meet his gaze. When you didn’t, he gently touched your elbows. You looked at him.
“I mean it.” He stared into your eyes. “You’re gorgeous, cabbage.”
And when you found something like fondness and honesty in his pupils, you swallowed. You cursed your weak little heart, cursed it for beating louder and faster. There was still a part of you that was convinced it was all a joke. It had to be.
“I’m not lying,” he said again before smiling. “Not like I could anyway.”
You raised a brow, and his smile turned into a grin, understanding the look on your face perfectly.
“Rule ten: Jeon can’t fucking lie to me and always has to tell me the truth.”
You stilled. “You remembered the exact wording?”
Jungkook grinned at you. “Of course. Wouldn’t want to break any accidentally, would I?”
“Wait,” you stared at him, “do you have them all memorised?”
And like it was obvious, he nodded. “Of course.”
You narrowed your eyes and pursed your lips, not quite believing him. “Really?”
“Yeah.”
It was the fact that he said it so casually. It already sounded like he wanted you to challenge him. You tilted your head to the side. “What’s rule four?”
“Cabbage will try to stop being so judgemental and expect the worst from me,” Jungkook shot back, and you pressed your lips together. He held your gaze.
“That sounds…”
“Right,” he supplied when you wouldn’t continue, and you wrinkled your nose because you would have much preferred if it had been ‘made up’.
“Rule eight?”
“You and I will fake date for two months and one week and break up amicably,” Jungkook said, the words spilling from his lips in an instant.
“Rule three?”
A grin formed on his lips then, clearly enjoying watching you try and fail to trip him up.
“I can’t kiss Y/N-”
“Rule nine?”
And when Jungkook didn’t immediately answer, a triumphant grin pulled on the corners of your lips.
“Ha! You don’t know this one-”
“No, no,” he said, “I do know this one. I just don’t think you’d want me to recite it.”
You snorted. “That sounds like an excuse.”
“It’s not.”
You levelled him with an unimpressed look, a brow quirking up. “Sure, it’s not-”
“You can’t fall in love with me.”
You went quiet.
“Rule nine: Cabbage can’t fall in love with me,” Jungkook repeated when you wouldn’t say anything, his mouth turning up into a small smirk.
As quickly as that grin had made an appearance on your lips, it disappeared just as quickly, something like a frown forming.
“Told you, you wouldn’t like to hear me recite it again,” Jungkook said, smirking. You looked off to the side.
“I completely forgot about that stupid rule,” you spat, and he laughed. You scrunched your nose in distaste and dismissed everything with a flick of your wrist, deeming this no longer fun. “Whatever. Let’s just go.”
Left with no choice but to follow you, Jungkook hurried after you, grabbing the door handle before you could. Your face soured when he gestured for you to hop inside, curses almost spilling out when you got in. At this point, he was practically beaming, no longer resembling the fire prince you first fell in love with.
“You’re annoying,” you said when he slotted the keys into the ignition and the car sputtered to life.
Jungkook met your eyes, seatbelt halfway pulled across his chest. “And you’re beautiful.”
You groaned and shook your head. “Just drive.”
