Musician’s Life / Writer’s Life
As I’ve mentioned a fair few times on this blog (and as you might have figured out if you’re familiar with my work’s focus on Music), I’m not only a writer but also a classically-trained pianist who plays several other instruments including clarinet.
Unfortunately, I’ve had so much more training on piano that I lack the confidence and stamina on my other instruments that lets me practice for hours on end, like I do with the piano, and so I’m at nothing like the same level on my other instruments!
I have ABRSM Grade 5 Piano and Grade 5 Theory, and stopped formal exams there, but carried on classical training with the same teacher, and our lessons took on a much freer (almost Suzuki-esque) form; the focus after that was on studying what I wanted, learning the pieces I enjoyed, and building a repertoire that used the theory we’d explored. In the end, I took thirteen years of piano lessons (age 5 to age 18), non-stop, with the same brilliant, lovely teacher.
In secondary school, I also took clarinet lessons, and played in my school’s swing band from my very first week of Year 7. My clarinet lessons were much more casual than my piano lessons, and I never took any clarinet exams, so was never exactly sure about my skill level. I primarily played (and still play) clarinet by ear, with most of the sight-reading I did then being of new pieces in the swing band’s repertoire, and for pit band when our school performed the musical ‘Grease’.
Once I’d finished school and moved to university, I barely played clarinet for a year, because I’d picked up ukulele, and my asthma was Back And Better (read: WORSE) Than Ever, so playing clarinet for any substantial period was next to impossible for a long time. I made that worse for myself by only picking up my clarinet twice per month at the most, and by chucking myself into crafting, writing and playing ukulele. I wasn’t much better in my second or third year, but in my fourth, I’ve been trying really hard to play my clarinet more often.
My lungs are so much better now than they were, earlier in my BA (French and German, not Music), and I’m finally back to the reed-strength I used when I played for several hours at once every Friday (with the band), plus several more hours, cumulatively during the rest of the week. Since I’ve brought my lungs back up to their former strength, the biggest barrier to regular, frequent clarinet practice has been my more-or-less-total lack of sheet music. Like I said, I play by ear, but I also struggle to think of new pieces to learn that way. When you could take absolutely any song or piece in the world and work out how to play it, which one do you pick?
I decided to treat myself to some clarinet sheet music, but had no real idea what level I’d be able to play, so I ordered ABRSM Exam books (Grades 3, 4 and 5)... but, like a clot, ordered 3 and 4 to my university address instead of the address where I am right now, with my family (we love lockdown!), hoping that I’d be able to play some pieces from at least one book. I was expecting to find Grade 3 challenging, and struggle with Grade 4, but be able to work my way up to Grade 5 over time... but I had a go at some of the Grade 5 pieces today (the only ones I currently have access to - see above clot-like foolery), and... they’re easy to sight-read??
All this to say, I’ve managed to do a decent amount of clarinet practice today, and have discovered that I’m far better at clarinet than I’ve been thinking! I’m very excited to carry on practicing, and to see where I can take my music from here. At the moment, I am practicing Rachmaninoff’s 14th Variation on a Theme of Paganini, and a Tarantella.
