MOVING DAY - Self Para.

Sometime in late June, Shona get’s her belongings ready to move in with Oz, and tries not to think about the bittersweet memories of her crappy apartment.  

TRIGGER WARNINGS - poverty, parental abandonment, anxiety (attack), guilt. 

Shona wistfully sighed as she leaned against the doorframe of her bedroom, looking into the vast empty space that once resembled a landfill of her clothes and personal items. Her bed had been stripped of linens and stood bare exposing every cigarette burn or spilled wine stain on the old mattress. Every poster, picture and decor on the walls had been torn down leaving small patches of squares lighter than the rest of the badly painted wall for all to see. She hadn’t been bothered to repaint it– who gave a fuck anyway. She had taken the lamp and bedside locker, the bulb from the ceiling lamp as a force of habit and an oddly shaped mirror that hung awkwardly across from her bed. Most of her clothes had fit into her busted up, faded in colour suitcase and everything else stuffed into two large black trash bags for easier transportation. Shona knew she would want for nothing with Oz, that his fortress of power and all its servants or butlers or whatever the fuck would provide her with everything that was possibly needed. So there was no need to take the chipped, ceramic ash-tray she had painted with her mother when she was a young child. She did not need to bring the coffee stained mug that was clinging together with sheer desperation from being over washed for over twenty years, her mom might come back for it. And the painting of the farmhouse with the donkey, one her mother had done just before she’d gotten too sick to do her duty, before she’d left Shona to do everything herself. 

The afternoon sun spilled through the open blinds, illuminating the dirty window and Shona closed over the bedroom door with a harsh thud. Stepping away she passed the bathroom with the leaky faucet and the mirror stained with toothpaste splashes, the basin had turned from white to a faded grey over the years and was now proudly sporting a large crack threatening to come apart at any second. Shona tried to push away the memories of brushing her teeth next to her mom, standing on an upside-down laundry basket to look into the mirror. She’d once been too short to reach but now she towered over the sink, but her mother would never know that. The bathtub with the built-in shower hose that never stayed one temperature taunted Shona as she shut her eyes and tried not to picture the bubble baths with fresh lavender from the garden, but the smell of the memory lingered in the air as six year old Shona giggled with delight while her mom helped her create potions in an empty shampoo bottle. Shona shook her head with disgust at the innocent memory, focusing on the limescale that had built up onto the tiles and the grime clinging to the rotting shower curtain she should have replaced a long time ago. There would be fancy bubble baths, temperate showers and functioning sinks at Oz’s place. Maybe the toilet would flush with ease also or wouldn’t shake or churn like it was about to explode every time it was used. 

In the kitchen living combined space Shona had her trash bags filled with clothes she probably wouldn’t wear, and trinkets she would never look at again in the middle of the room in front of the open door leading into the hallway. Next to the small rectangle shaped area stood a crumbling kitchen on faded marble linoleum. The cabinets creaked every time she opened them, the shelves were loose and mostly bare apart from some half eaten boxes of cereal, random tins of beans and tuna, and an almost empty jar of coffee. The fridge was small with ancient stickers from the 90’s half peeled off, a light that flickered if the door was kept open for more than 15 seconds and had a peculiar odor like spoiled milk from underneath it. At Oz’s house everything would be sparkling clean, she could have delicious breakfast in bed if she fancied it. The pantry would be fully stocked and the electricity bills always paid. And nothing would be spoiled with stickers or drawings from a dumb kid trying to kill time whilst her Mom was out doing hell knows what. 

The carpet that swallowed up the rest of the floor was a faded navy and in desperate need of a vacuum. The discolored sage love-seat that pretty much sunk to the ground when you sat on it had left four permanent square shaped indentations into the carpet, it hadn’t been moved since Shona was a kid. She tried not to think about what kind of dirt and bacteria was fermenting underneath it. The wall paper was dated and peeling in places, Shona had never cared enough about it to repair it. What was the point? No one else was going to see it.  Before drawing the curtains to a close Shona took one last look out the big window in her apartment. The terrible view of Evermore’s more undesirable area that she’d grown used to. The car park for residents with its parking lines practically invisible after years of weather damage, it wouldn’t matter though, the people here parked how they wanted. The Snuggly Duckling waving up at her with its lights off and questionable smudges on the window’s. The steps outside where she’d first met Luis and Barrett, her very best friends. They had been through it together. This place was a hellhole, but it was home. And for such a long time it was all Shona had ever known, perhaps that’s why it was so difficult to leave. 

An overwhelming sensation of guilt began to swell in Shona’s chest. The room felt hot and stuffy, and she began to notice how difficult it was to breathe normally. The short bursts of air caused her even more panic and she remembered this feeling from when her Mom didn’t come home. She was having a panic attack– but this time she was the one who wouldn’t come back here. Placing a hand over her chest Shona tried to slow her breathing into something more manageable, trying to trick her head into calming down, in just a few short minutes she could close the door and hopefully never think of this rotten, beat down, piece of shit apartment ever again. And then she smelled his cologne in the air, heard the familiar footsteps down the hall and into the living room. She turned to face him with her suitcase and trashbags at her feet, and he smiled; then suddenly everything was okay. Oz standing there with a glint of sweat on his forehead from moving her belongings, the car keys in his hand and a grin that said ‘Lets Do This’, it was almost enough to break her completely. Shona had to fight with herself to convince her brain she deserved this. A safe apartment with someone who loved her, and she could not wait another second to live there with him.

Quickly, so that she couldn’t change her mind at the last second, Shona grinned back at her boyfriend. Her partner, her person. The man who she loved and who loved her too, even if her Mother never did. Despite the fact she had an abundance of issues and not a penny to her name, Oz loved her and all her strange little quirks and Shona, dumbfounded by his kindness, had taken too long to accept it. And today she was so grateful that she did, because it was time to leave behind part of the pain and begin what could be her happy ever after. They both deserved it. Kicking the trash bags towards him in her typical reckless fashion, Shona dragged her suitcase along the dirty carpet and met him in the door frame. “Lets do this.” She smiled, slamming the door shut behind them. She didn’t bother to take a final look at the toxic wasteland, money pit of a home. It was her Mother’s problem now, wherever the hell she was.

What a bargain. I cannot believe that this beautifully restored 1870 Victorian (they’re also calling it Italianate, but it’s Victorian) in Faribury, Illinois is only $250,000.

This home is in perfect condition and it’s all original. 

Arched doorways with transome windows.

Even the windows are arched. Plus thick crown molding and ceiling medallions with original fixtures. 

They perfectly matched the wood on the new cabinets to the original wood, put in a vintage looking tile floor, and left an exposed brick wall.

Off the kitchen is a dining room with a service window. 

Large nicely updated bath.

The 2nd fl. has 3 bedrooms.

This is a very “tastefully” done redo. Not my taste, but I’m sure they thought that it should be neutral. It would’ve looked much more attractive with some color. 

The bedrooms are all a nice size with plenty of room for seating.

A cabinet in the hall takes the place of a linen closet.

The 2nd bath is beautifully redone.

A/N: Thanks @burnsoslow​ for letting my little menace torture your couple and pre-reading. I’m fairly certain that one part was written more for your enjoyment (it wasn’t supposed to be that long Burns... lol).

Look Enna! I wrote two drabbles in less than a month :) And we have a worldwide pandemic to thank for that.

“Hell no! That little shit is not staying in our house.” Drake spat at the small boy who had his father’s boyish looks and his mother’s witty charm.

“Drake. He’s just a little boy,” Alyssa defended. “What’s the worst that could happen?”

“I could die.”

Alyssa chuckled and wrapped her thin arms around Drake’s waist. She was somewhat amused by what was perceived to be her boyfriend being overly dramatic. “You are not going to die. I’ve been with him most of the afternoon and he’s been a perfect, well-behaved child. And besides, it’s already getting late and Riley could really use a break to deal with her … post-mortem detention.”

“Baby, I love your kind heart. I really do,” he said while tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. “But, Liam and Riley have a nanny who can help out with the kids. He doesn’t need to stay here.”

Alyssa shook her head. “No. Nik said she got fired.”

Drake furrowed his brows at his young god-son. “Your parent’s fired, Hilda?” he interrogated.

“Nope. I had to let her go, Uncle Drake.” Nik replied while opening a can of soda he helped himself to from the Walker fridge. “She wasn’t following my rules.”

“What damn rules?” Drake scowled.

Nik took a sip of his soda and made a sour face before he dumped it whole into the trash can. “You know … don’t be a snitch. She ratted me out to my dad about running over the Countess of Genitalia. And you know what they say about snitches, Uncle Drake … they get stitches.”

Drake gave Alyssa a knowing look who doesn’t even seem to notice due to her own shock.

“Oh my god, Nikolas! What’d you do to her?”

The young boy flashed her a cocky wink and a smirk. “Nothing a long wig and pair of sunglasses can’t cover-up, my love.”

Alyssa snapped an astonished glance at her boyfriend who simply shrugged. “Told ya.”

She followed behind Nikolas who pulled out a chair at the table and started coloring.

She crouched down next to him and took a deep breath. “Okaaay. Look, Nik. I had a lotta fun hanging out with you today, I really did, but it’s probably best if you go back to your home for the night.”

Nikolas stopped coloring to look at her; his face crestfallen, and sighed. “I understand, Miss Alyssa. Just know that I will never forget you. Your smile … your laugh … your lovely lady lumps. That kick-ass grilled cheese you made me. And how you taught me to make useless shit with yarn and pipe cweaners … you make me want to be a better boy … a better prince for Condomonia.

Drake rolled his eyes and pulled his cell phone from his back pocket. “Give me a fucking break. I’m calling Liam right now and having him send someone to pick up your ass.”

Alyssa stood and leaned into Drake. “You probably should watch your language around him.”

“Seriously, Alyssa? The boy just said shit and that’s one of his milder ones,” he scoffed while placing the phone to his ear. “He once made the entire Royal Guard cry after bitching them out.”

Alyssa winced and scratched her head as Drake walked away to make his call. She was somewhat confused, having met Nikolas’ parents during a few social gatherings. Liam was always very courteous and respectful; every bit the compassionate leader she had heard of him. Riley appeared to be a loving mother who doted on her children and husband.

As she watched this child, with his little tongue sticking out while he worked studiously on a drawing of an anaconda that appeared to be squeezing the life out of the man she loved, Alyssa pondered whether he was just misunderstood. She was pulled from her thoughts when Drake moved up beside her with a fake laugh.

“Well...Apparently the entire palace is on a damn lock-down after they found the German Prime Minister hogtied in a linen closet. The German security forces won’t allow anyone in, or out until they catch the supposed midget in tactical gear that apparently waterboarded her. So, of course, Liam is busy dealing with that shit and Riley’s phone went straight to voicemail. Got anything you wanna confess kid”

Nikolas continued to color, completely unfazed. “I told her she could come out when she agreed to my dad’s trade steal. She smelled like an old lady anyway .. she wouldn’t have been missed.”

Drake ran a hand down his face, trying to keep his cool.

Alyssa pulled him to the opposite end of the kitchen and lowered her voice.

“Look, baby. Listen .... we’re not going to panic, okay?  I will keep him busy and out of your hair. He seems to respond well to me and we’ll just make the best of it, alright? 

“Lyssa … we had plans for tonight, remember? I really wanted to spank that sexy ass in those new restraints.” He flashed a devilish grin with a pinch to her backside

She bit her lip, returning a sultry gaze. “Oh that shit’s still happening, Drake Walker.”

“Promise?”

She stood on her tiptoes to place a peck on his lips. “Promise. As soon as he falls asleep.”   

Feeling a gnawing burn in the pit of his stomach, Drake ran his fingers through his hair and glanced at the little prince. “You really think you can handle him where we both don’t wind up in a shallow grave in the backyard?”

Alyssa stood up straighter with a confident smile. “I believe so, yes.” 

Drake sulked as he sauntered back across the kitchen and Alyssa began pulling pots from the cabinet.

He towered over the boy. “Okay, kid. You can stay.”

“Really?” Nikolas beamed.

Drake gave him a stern look while he lightly gripped the back of Nik’s neck. “Yeah. But, you try any funny shit, Nikolas and I swear to god I’ll bust your ass.”

Nikolas tried to stifle a laugh that he hoped his uncle noticed … and Drake did. “God, you’re such a little asshole. I’m gonna go feed the horses,” he dismissed.

“Alright Nik, how about you help me with dinner … spaghetti and meatballs!” Alyssa called cheerfully for him as she filled a pot with water.

“Anything for you, my queen!”

Alyssa was right in her assumption that Nik would not cause any problems for her. She didn’t say anything to him as the meatballs he formed were in the shape of penises; it was obvious he was fishing for attention. Drake, on the other hand, was quick to refuse to eat the “little dicks staring at him” for dinner, especially ones that had Nikolas grubby paws on them. 

And after playing an hour of Grand Theft Auto, in which he tried to teach her how to get the hooker to slash the throat of a pimp, he took a bath, brushed his teeth, and settled into the guest room.

“Good night, Miss Alyssa,” he croaked in his sleepy voice. He tucked the stuffed dragon his father gave him into his chest and closed his eyes.

She smiled as she flipped the light switch by the door. “Good night, Nikolas.”

Drake was still alive and in one piece, and Nikolas, surprisingly, hadn’t disturbed him the entire evening. Now it was time to retire the babysitter cap for the night and try out the new toy that she and Drake had been waiting for hours to use.

“He.Is.Out.” Alyssa proclaimed as she entered the master bedroom; her arms animating each word she spoke. 

Drake, who was standing on the top rung of a ladder wearing nothing but denim boxershorts, clipped a chain through a metal hook in the ceiling. “It’s about damn time!”

Alyssa gawked curiously at the contraption as the rest of the chain fell. She tugged on the bottom where two leather wrist cuffs were attached an arm’s length above her short frame. The last thing she wanted was a heavy strand of steel crashing down while Drake made a bad girl out of her. 

When she felt confident the chain was secure, she performed a sexy striptease while her lover’s hands roamed over each newly exposed section of skin. Drake unsnapped the metal buckles on the leather cuffs and fastened her wrist into each one.

“Wait! Aren’t you going to read the instructions?” Alyssa’s eyes flashed to Drake as if the idea suddenly popped into her head.

“Baby, I think I know what to do with these. Your hands go in here … and my hands …” He slid his fingers between her moistened folds. “go down there.” Alyssa shuddered at his husky voice and the feeling of anticipation that pooled inside of her.

Drake raised his brows. “You remember the safe word?”

“Hmm-mm. Bertrand,” she replied with a quick nod.

A smile dangled on the corner of his lips. “Very good.”

Drake slapped the leather flog across his hand and prowled like a wolf, ready to pounce its prey, around his girlfriend. Her arms outstretched tightly above her head.

“Somebody’s been a verrry bad, girl.” Alyssa teased. Her blue eyes shifting between the leather and his denim bulge.

“Oh yeah?”  He licked his lips while continuing his sensual stroll.

“Yeah. In fact, I’m undercover right now. I’m a whore … a very naughty whore.”

Drake halted his movements and raised the flog. “I suppose I’ll have to punish you then … my very naughty undercover whore.”

“Ohh no, Officer Walker! Please don’t hurt me! Me so horny, me love you long time!”

Meanwhile…

One, beady blue eye popped open from a disturbance occurring on the floor directly above him. It was a sound he wasn’t that familiar with. For the last year, he had memorized the sound of pain, yet this particular scream was unlike anything he had heard before from any of his usual victims. 

“Drake! Fuck that hurts!”

The second eye popped open. He heard her yell out again and again. The sound of torture and agony reverberated through the ceiling and fell upon his perked up ears. 

Was his Uncle Drake murdering Alyssa?

“Oh my god, Drake! You’re killing me!”

It seemed so.

But, would he actually murder his own girlfriend?

“Devereaux, I’m gonna shove this thing in you so hard.”

Likely.

Nikolas tossed off the covers and crept out of his bed. He slithered across the room, flipped on the lights, and retrieved his backpack that lay on top an old dresser. 

It was time to put a plan into action, save his woman and make sure Drake Walker regretted the day he’d ever been born.

For this Mundelein Master Bath, the homeowners requested an update that would take advantage of the large room’s space, opening it up and refreshing the dated fixtures. Regency Home Remodeling’s clever designers were able to do just that, creating a sophisticated, luxurious spa retreat with a few surprises.

The first step was to replace the dated enclosed tub with a stylish Barclay freestanding air tub from Studio 41, surrounded by Daltile’s herringbone pattern wainscoting in 4 x 8 Arctic White tile by Daltile. By changing out the tub, the shower could be relocated and enlarged, the walls lined with Daltile’s 12 x 24 Uniform Concrete Dark Grey tile. To coordinate, a new vanity and linen tower were installed in Regency’s gray shaker style, all topped by Daltile’s OQ23 Equinox quartz, also applied to the shower threshold, bench, and niche trim. Studio 41 provided on-trend Kohler vessel sinks and modern lighted medicine cabinets, as well as the Kalia plumbing fixtures and faucets, and the whole room is pulled together by the stunning floor, Daltile’s 12 x 224 Marble Attache tile in Lavish Pearl Arabesque.

Perhaps the most stunning design element was a frosted glass pocket door leading to a charming new windowed alcove housing an additional storage cabinet. Three Indonesian Luxury Villas By The Sea

Located on Lombok, an island in West Nusa Tenggara province of Indonesia, three amazing luxury villas stand poised, overlooking the waters edge. Designed by Alejandro Borrego, the builds each span between 400 and 450 square metres, with the sites ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 square metres. Glorious sea views wash past towering palm trees onto sweeping outdoor living spaces, and into rich wood toned interiors of impressive scale. Indonesian spice flavours the stylish interior designs of the residential homes, where clean modern furniture pieces meet with natural rustic accents and accessories. Wood clad walls climb behind crisp white upholstery and linens, whilst timber tidbits sprinkle authentic character.

First up is the largest of our three villas at 450 square metres, located on the smallest of the three sites at 1.500 square metres. The client brief requested a simplified Mediterranean architectural design be realised. In response, streamlined blocks were stacked to create the house’s modern shape. Outdoor furniture was kept low and sleek, and an outdoor conversation pit was sunk into the pool patio.

Keeping the furniture low allows the outdoor space to run smooth with the horizon, and for the trees to maintain their starring role in the magnificent view.

Sitting in the sunken conversation pit seems to sink you right into the ocean.

In the evenings, moonlight floods the pale marble patio.

The house is surrounded by dense green scenery, in the exclusive luxury residential development of Tampah Hills.

The idyllic setting bathes the home in calm. An infinity pool flows in an L-shape around the property.

Palm trees reflect in the surface of the infinity pool.

Sun loungers lay low at the water’s edge.

Mediterranean style interior design mixes with Indonesian flavour. A lively array of naturally bright cement, cream coloured marble and dark iron wood were sourced locally from Lombok and other parts of Indonesia.

A combination of rustic and modern pieces make up the look, like these modern nesting coffee tables in the midst of raw walls and wooden elements.

A massive dining table seats a minimum of eleven party guests–with room for a couple more to squeeze in thanks to an extensive dining bench.

The dining area runs alongside the kitchen in a vast open plan room, and also adjoins with the outdoor living space. The house is designed to be comfortable and sustainable in its tropical climate; cross ventilation is achieved by keeping living spaces completely open with screens for shade.

A variety of kitchen pendant lights dangle above a large kitchen island, with modern kitchen bar stools. Traditional pottery items adorn the top of tall and rustic wooden cabinets along the back wall.

The master suite of the four bedroom house contains a 4 poster bed, where a unique ceiling fan assists a cool nights sleep.

A small floor reading lamp and chaise lounge chair make up a reading area in the bedroom.

Sunlight filters through decorative bricks and a mini jungle inside the ensuite luxury bathroom.

Palm trees sway beyond a walk-in shower.

An outdoor bathtub basks in the sun’s rays.

Greenery engulfs the modern home exterior.

Our next luxury Indonesian villa stands on a sloping site measuring 2,000 square metres, with a build of 400 square metres.

Upon studying the site, the designers became inspired by the red-ish brown colour of the soil that nurtured the surrounding plants. The earthy colour palette was adopted into the architecture and interior wall colour of the entire house, blending it with the habitat.

The largest furniture pieces are kept light against the dark and earthy walls, though an accent chair in the lounge blends with the wood tone in the room. A small floor lamp provides reading light by its side.

A canopy of climbing plants help protect the house from strong direct sunlight.

Gorgeous stonework builds a bathtub and matching vanity unit.

A comfy lounge chair and pouf set rest out by the pool.

A modern yet rustic dining set stretches out by the kitchen.

The houses sustainable design incorporates simple local materials, such as sand stone, natural coloured cement, and teak wood.

A day bed is supremely placed for the view.

Locally sourced accessories accentuate the interior.

The house stands 75 meters above sea level, oriented toward the glittering ocean in the south.

Another 400 square metre build on a 2,000 square metre site in Tampah Hills, located an hour from Lombok Airport. The exterior was designed using basic geometry, giving the home the look of a floating block, with a simple roof. Cantilevered on one side, the villa sits lightly on the land and faces out toward the ocean.

Moving inside the villa, there is a living room with a spectacular view.

A simplistic approach was taken for the interior design too, where a minimal colour palette is at play. Beige coloured cement from the soil of the site was employed to cover the house, giving it a local feel.

Sitting 60 meters above sea level, with panoramic views of ocean and tropical forest, the home was designed with its main living spaces completely open.

The cross air flow makes the home more sustainable.

By night, the house lights up the forest.

Wood slat screens provide shade but maintain air flow.

Wood clad walls shape the interior.

A large indoor plant grows inside one of the three impressive bedrooms. The glass vase on the live edge wood side table is the Échasse Vase by Menu.

Also, a Dark Tower clock (the design is cut out of a vinyl record and it looks very cool, but I hate the noise so I don’t put batteries in it. it’s just art).

7. Do you have a string of lights somewhere in your room? >> Yeah, a small string over my bed.

8. Do you have a desk in your room? What’s on it?    >> No, a desk wouldn’t fit in here.

9. Do you/did you ever have to share a bedroom with someone else? >> I don’t share this bedroom. I’ve shared many a space with many a person in the past and I am over it.

The lamp, my water bottle and whatever else I’m drinking, pill bottles, pillow spray (it’s lavender), lip balm, a Promethea comic for when I get the urge to read it, and a speaker. There’s a bunch of stuff in it (there are three drawers), like incense boxes, my tarot decks, chargers, etc.

11. Do you have a vanity or a mirror in your bedroom? >> I do have a vanity. I yoinked it from Sparrow so I’d have a place to put my hygiene stuff.

12. Do you have a clock in your bedroom, even if you just use your phone as an alarm? >> There’s a clock in here, as previously mentioned, but I don’t use it as one.

13. Do you have a calendar in your bedroom? >> No.

14. Is your bedroom neat or messy? How often do you clean it? >> I’m always thinking it’s messy because I have hyper-critical vision about that sort of thing, but honestly, it’s probably in the best condition it could be. Small rooms look cluttered really easily because everything is kind of on top of everything else, but frankly, I’m doing my best.

15. Do you make your bed on a daily basis? >> No.

16. How many windows are in your bedroom(s)? What sorts of coverings do they have? >> One. Just a set of blinds.

17. Do you have a bookshelf in your room? Approximately how many books do you own? >> No. No space, really. I have some books on one of the shelves of my wardrobe-thing; the rest of my books are in the bookshelf in the living room.

19. Is your closet “regular” sized, or is it a walk-in? >> It’s a small closet that I don’t use because it used to hold a cat’s litter box and...... yeah. It just stays closed.

20. What kinds of things do you do in your bedroom? >> I do almost everything in my bedroom. The only thing I don’t do in here is game, because my gaming computer is in the living room.

Swapping out an unused old tub can suddenly reveal a shower that transcends time, as these Vernon Hills homeowners discovered when they chose Regency Home Remodeling to refresh a tired master bath. Working with top designers blending expertise with imagination, this boring bathroom suddenly exploded with possibilities.

By removing the dated old tub, Regency could expand the shower to epic proportions, lining the floor and walls with the same 15” x 30” Enlite Transcend tile from Daltile. Next, they punctuated the pow with dual accent bands of Cegi Silver tile, adding a stunningly modern new QM Linear drain from Studio 41. Daltile also provided the gray quartz for the shower bench, as well as the NQ30 Morning Frost quartz for the double-sink vanity. The top was then set with two Kohler Vox Square Vessel sinks and matching Kohler matte black plumbing fixtures, all from Studio 41. In terms of design, the luxury hotel was built inside an old harbor control building situated right beside a classic lighthouse. All of the rooms were renovated and modernized to include amenities such as en suite bathrooms, free Wifi, and private balconies. There’s also a gourmet restaurant on site. 

But the real showstopper is the ultra-luxurious Presidential/honeymoon suite on the top floor, which offers spectacular 360º views of the entire Pelican Point peninsula.

This eco-lodge is unique not only because it’s a luxury treehouse, but also because it’s located inside Bandhavgarh National Park in Indian animals right from your treehouse balcony, or at one of the observation towers throughout the property. I only saw Tigers during my safari in Bandhavgarh’s Core Zone, but was told that they’ve had Tiger and Leopard sightings right there on the lodge’s property. Amazing, right?

The Pugdundee Treehouse Hideaway only has 5 private treehouse suites. While the decor is rustic, they offer all the amenities of a luxury accommodation. Guests enjoy rain-head showers, air conditioned rooms with a tea & coffee station, and extremely comfortable beds.

Rooms usually come with full board and 1 daily safari. While they do not have a pool or spa on the property, you can use those facilities at their nearby sister property, King’s Lodge.

Another point I loved about my stay at the Treehouse Hideaway was that the Pugdundee company takes sustainability very seriously. The world-renowned La Balade Des Gnomes is located in Durbuy, Belgium, about a 90-minute drive south of Brussels. You can really only reach this unusual hotel by car, but it’s worth the drive, which allows you to take in the lush forests and winding rivers of the Ardennes region.

If you’re a fan of unique places to stay, you won’t find many more interesting than this quirky accommodation. Upon entering the hotel grounds, you’re immediately drawn into a somewhat bizarre fantasy world.

Each of the 11 rooms has a different theme, which has been carefully designed by the owner. Themes include:

● Macquarie Island, which is in two levels of the main building and includes a “cliff” and the chance to sleep in a sailboat. ● The Latcho Dom Trailer, which is a traditional gypsy trailer with a double bed, toilet, tub, and cooking facilities. ● The Trojan Horse, which is the accomodation this hotel is most famous for. The horse is situated outside the main property, and the entrance is through its back ende! The room includes a bubble bath, shower, one double bed, and two children’s beds. ● The Luna Room, which is decorated like the surface of the moon, including the stars in the sky and a bathroom that looks like a spaceship.

9. Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort (Lapland, Finland)

If you’re looking for unique accommodations, you can’t go wrong with a glass igloo hotel! Kakslauttanen Arctic resort is located well inside the arctic circle, and they were the pioneers of the glass igloo. There are certainly many imitators around the world, but we think the original remains the best!

The resort is spread across two main locations, with the older, cozier part located in the east village. There are around 30 igloos spaced out among the trees here, and this was where I spent a wonderful night.

A glass igloo is the perfect place from which to watch the night sky. And if you visit Finland in winter, it’s also where you can get stunning views of the Northern Lights.

It’s worth noting that, while the igloos are relatively expensive, they are not what most peoiple would consider luxury. They’re certainly comfortable though, with WiFi, a small toilet (no shower), and electronically powered beds that can be tilted up for optimal northern lights viewing.

Have you ever dreamed of waking up surrounded by French vineyards? If so, one of the best places to stay in Saint-Emilion is in one of two giant wine vats that were converted into amazing accommodations in the famed Bordeaux wine region.

These two vats were never actually used to make the region’s world-renowned wine. But they are real wine vats crafted by the prestigious wine barrel and vat maker, Seguin Moreau. Both of them are big enough to hold the equivalent of 160,000 bottles of wine.

Each of the two wine vats is uniquely decorated, with a queen size bed, ensuite bathroom facilities, and all the creature comforts one could desire (including air conditioning, Wifi, and cable television).

Guests are given a basket filled with artisan products for breakfast, and are welcome to visit the estate for a tour and tasting of Château de Bonhoste. With the original iron doors, vaulted ceilings, and exposed brick walls, these posh rooms are now a far cry from the prison days. Each boasts a king sized bed, flat screen TV, iPod dock, and Wifi. All of the bathrooms have walk-in showers and rolltop baths, with plenty of fluffy white towels and toiletries marked “Steal Me” as a cheeky nod to the building’s former residents.

The interior design vibe is dark and intimate, with “cells” decorated in deep reds, greys and browns. If you prefer a lighter mood, the adjoining “House of Correction” offers warehouse-style suites and duplexes.

If you’re from Canada or going to visit Canada in winter, you might as well make friends with cold, snow, and ice. And what better way to do that than by staying at the Quebec City Ice Hotel (which is also known as the Hôtel de Glace in French)?

The Ice Hotel is rebuilt every year in a forest 20 minutes outside of Quebec City once enough snow has accumulated, usually in January. It generally lasts until March, when the whole thing starts to melt.

If you have any doubt, the Ice Hotel really is a hotel. There’s a parking lot and a heated building where you check in and learn all about the Ice Hotel– who made it, how, and what that year’s theme is. I visited a couple of years back, when the theme was After going through the reception building, you enter a picturesque Canadian winter scene like something out of a painting, with the fantasy-like Ice Hotel rising from the snow. It truly is magical. The year I went, there were 44 guest rooms plus an Ice Bar, Ice Cafe, chapel, and children’s slide.

The Ice Bar is very popular. You can have an alcoholic beverage in a glass made from ice, which is more warming than you might imagine. There’s also a spa with a couple of heated buildings for the change room and washrooms for overnight guests.

The rooms are totally made of ice, and they range from basic to ornately carved suites. The year I was there, there was a suite carved with The beds are made of ice, with a thick sleeping bag on a mattress to keep you (somewhat) warm. The staff very strongly suggests that you visit the spa before bed, and use the hot tub and sauna to get really warm. But, truth be told, you do tend to  get chilly before the night is over.
