I finished The Open Society and its Enemies and I still have to process a lot of it, but... I would have to say it’s one of the most worthwhile books I ever read. Not because I agreed with all of it, but because even when I disagreed, it was such an intellectual exercise and so eye-opening and introduced me to new perspectives. I wish I’d read it as a young philosophy student. It would have saved me a lot of trouble.
Coincidentally, TIK History posted some videos recently that have a lot to do with Karl Popper’s work. They’re a good compliment to James Lindsay’s work - or a good alternative if you won’t listen to James Lindsay.

January 2019
Summary: I had just started my final spring semester of college and I was barely hanging on going to my internship, classes, prepping for my last shows for the semester, going to my job, cutting out a very toxic friend out of my life, grappling with the unraveling of coming out not of my own accord to my parents, and so many other things that I didn’t even want to even start thinking about.
At the time I felt so small and scared about everything going on around me because I felt so ill prepared for the future. I had no idea what I should be doing and how I was going to even accomplish any of the things I wanted to do. Heck. I didn’t even know if I was going to even be able to achieve any of it.
It just all seemed so impossible and everyone else seemed to have some kind of plan for the future on what they were going to do next and excited about us all leaving. It felt like no one noticed how upset or sad I was about how our journey was coming to an end and we were all going to have to live out separate lives. Even though, that wasn’t true at all. It was still how I felt at the time and this playlist reflects all of my feelings at the time.

This magazine, an earlier edition than one previously examined, can be referenced in more than one way in research. It has many illustrated advertisements and written articles that accompany them, the majority of which cater to men.
Style Book for Men and Young Men: Autumn and Winter, 1916. United States: Hart, Schaffner & Marx, 1916.
This clothing magazine from the early 20th century has illustrations and advertisements that can be referenced in research. It would work well when it comes to comparing the changing fashions of masculinity between the end of the 19th and the early 20th centuries.
The Handbook of the Man of Fashion. United States: Lindsay and Blakiston, 1845.
The usefulness of this book is that it illustrates the etiquette of American society prior to the turn of the twentieth century, with a particular emphasis on the man’s role in said society. It does cover the trends in fashion at the time, as well as the behaviors a man was supposed to have when on his own.

This illustration from the cover of Saturday Evening Post, originally painted by J.C. Leyendecker, is but one example of the homoromantic gaze impacting the perception of American masculinity. The art is a useful piece of material for this project, as it strengthens the link between homosexuality and the “All American” man.

Unique worldbuilding scheduled for DIVINE WILL.
The historical worldbuilding of DIVINE WILL heavily draws on the work of James Lindsay & Eric Voeglin. For a detailed rundown of the material I'm working with, here's a series of lengthy lectures, in what I believe to be the most reasonable order for anyone new to the subject.
N.B. I am using the terms in a more narrow and precise manner than Lindsay or Voeglin did, so what they call "Gnosticism" is, in verse, called either "Dialecticism" or "Esotericism", and Gnosticism and Hermeticism are branches of that religious tradition.

I picked this because it makes for unique worldbuilding distinct from other historical fiction. It lays out an ancient and dangerous force of manipulation, but unlike other fictions where the threat may be an ancient organization unchanging through the ages, the manipulative force is a rogue memetic religion which parasites other religions. It's a conspiracy with no mastermind, a virus of the mind which mutates to avoid detection and propagate itself.
The world of DIVINE WILL will also operate under the assumption of Andrew Lang's Urmonotheism hypothesis. So the history of religion within the setting of DIVINE WILL is that the primordial religion of mankind is a primitive Monotheism, and that polytheism and animism were later religious innovations. This would pose certain implications to monotheistic religions of all stripes, be they Christian, Jewish, Dvaitin, Tenrikyōists, &c.

Pip weaves long lasting sonic landscapes. Justly intonated harmonies, airy noises and slow melodies construct an organic music where the listener can both surrender to the music and actively explore the multilayered sonic facets. The duo has existed since 2006 and since then they have developed a characteristic sound in a music encompassing improvisation and collective composition. Their 2019 release ‘Possible Worlds’ is a one hour long piece utilizing an extended instrumentarium of justly tuned guitars, trumpet and synthesizers, and it documents their pinnacle work as a duo so far.

SYNOPSIS: EXORCISTIC: The Rock Musical is a parody within a parody. Inspired by the 1973 movie, it is the story of a movie star whose daughter becomes possessed and is helped by priests who try to save her. The audience watches a struggling theater company at work as they develop the production on its way to Broadway. By the second act their lead, Emma Hunton, has taken “method acting” a step too far and is replaced with a Broadway star. However, things go awry as Emma returns and everything goes to hell.The production is packed with nineteen musical numbers, offering a rock take on show tunes, as the cast runs amok through the venue like the Marx Brothers meets the Animaniacs.
REVIEW: The unauthorized parody of The Exorcist was “Best Musical Winner” of the Hollywood Fringe Festival 2013 and returns ten years later to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. It comes to New York fresh from their sold-out run at The Three Clubs in Los Angeles.
This wickedly delightful parody spews its wit over a variety of themes and a period that ranges from the 70’s to present day. They don’t simply break down the fourth wall, they take over the entire performance space, in some instances on the audience’s tables and into their laps. To say it is intimate and in your face would be putting it mildly. The production is a hybrid of theater, cabarete, sketch comedy and slapstick that felt like Frank Oz’s cinematic adaptation of “Little Shop of Horrors” on acid. The jokes fly fast and furious, there is something for everyone, leaving the audience little time to recover in between. It is no wonder that there is an intermission, permitting the performers and audience time to catch their breath.
This is a fabulous ensemble cast. They move through the material and dance numbers with surgical precision of wittiness, moving about the space with a fluidity that feels like a classic Warner Bros. cartoon. Their voices belt out showtune rock ballads with clarity and mastery that transcends the cast recording, which I would recommend giving a listen to before seeing the performance - HERE, music and lyrics sounding like “Twisted Sister” meets “Monty Python,” with a big “Parental Advisory” needing to be slapped on something here. Emma Hunton’s performance is a tour de force, and I believe she has the most physical role in the show. She goes through numerous vocal changes that must wreak havoc on her voice by the end of the night, she belts out several power rock songs, and does a variety of gymnastic maneuvers, including one in the second act that is a la “Cirque du Soleil.” Actress Gabby Sanalitro is an utter delight as she seems to be possessed by the ghost of the neighborhood as she simultaneously channels the spirits of Fyvush Finkel/Zero Mostel and Lenny Bruce. The entire cast maintains an infectious high level of energy that leaves one wondering if it is wrong to feel this good by the end of the show.
The production designs and props are perfect for the jokes, sublime, yet minimalistic. The lighting was perfect in enhancing the performances and accentuating the jokes. There were times I wondered how they might achieve a certain scene and loved the execution with simple and clever props and designs. The costume designs were suited to the controlled chaos of the performance, clearly not Broadway costumes, but delightful touches to the tone and atmosphere of the moment.
EXORCISTIC: THE ROCK MUSICAL is a wickedly delightful treat perfect for the Halloween season. Having recently come away disappointed by the new Exorcist film, this take on the bawdy irreverent send up of the material left made for an excellent evening of theater. This big blasphemous, bodacious rowdy rock musical parody is not for the faint of heart, so be prepared to get your demon exorcized and your evening rocked.
Each night there will be a different special guest performer who will be played by: Marissa Rosen (For the Girls, Water for Elephants, Modern Love) Nick Cearly (The Skivvies, You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown) Jillian Schiralli (CATS, now that’s what i call 90s) Gerard Canonico (Almost Famous, The Dude Ranch) Jordan Donica (Camelot, RENT, Hamilton) Jamie Cepero (SMASH, The Function) and more!

Kali's Garden
In Kali's garden of Eden, the air is heavy with the delicate scent of pink blooms of hibiscus and orchids. Soft, velvety moss grows luxuriantly around three majestic trees with sprawling canopies. Time is no more.
The first tree is of Slowness. Chew on its delicate leaf and you will unlock its powers. Fluid timeless [1] turns into a subtle motion. Once you try to look at the [city] in slow motion, [you] begin to discern individual frames [2]. Erosion, evolution, formation of mountains, seasons suddenly all become evident. Now, [you] ought to be slow to believe what is told [3]. By slow and careful stages man and child learn to fear nothing [4].
You may have noticed, anything which moves very fast is invisible [5].
You have reached the tree of Swiftness. You now conceive a motion so fast, [...] that there can be no faster motion [6]. Within a minute [you are] moving at as fast a speed as [you] have ever experienced [7]. Speed, speed, and speed [8]. Light, sound, vibrations and wind are now shaping your city.
But in [Kali's] conception, [the city] is not just a [chronological] idyll [9].
With the tree of Switch, now assume the reverse [7]. The reverse side of [time] has a hundred thousand shapes and no defined limits [10]. By reversing time, you see history. Looking at the history, you see that [the city] used to be an identifiable place [11]. You see the history of spatial conceptions [12]. Sometimes, it is best to turn back [13], for I can see your fascination with history [7].
There are mirrors that turn faces to the right, and mirrors that turn them to the left, others twist and even invert them [3]. The same goes for time. So, [Kali's] consciousness, as an intersection of three time zones [1], acquires [three] degrees of speed [6]. Slow speed, fast speed and reversed speed. In her garden, she creates an articulation of the embodied consciousness [you] may call the experience of [14] seeing the city. This little puzzling thing grows larger and larger, turning into the central obsession of [you] life [1]. That is how the circle of life [15] moves.

What a smile! What a sweetheart! Oh yeah, Walfredo Reyes Jr. is also a spectacular drummer/percussionist. Seeing Wally in action last month killing it with Chicago, and then meeting him afterward clinched that he’s the trifecta. This time with him on Game Changers makes clear all three, even if he didn’t lift a stick or slap a cajón.
Wally brought his A+ game, treating us to stories about his musical royal family. From his maternal grandfather, his brilliant and accomplished father, Walfredo Reyes Sr., who played with Josephine Baker, Louie Bellson, Bobby Darin, Dionne Warwick, and Debbie Reynolds to name a few, and passed on the percussion/drummer whiz gene to his talented son, who also played with Debbie Reynolds, as well as Ricki Lee Jones, Richard Marx, Sergio Mendes, Smokey Robinson, Boz Scaggs… but we got the stories about his time with Santana, Traffic, then Steve Winwood, Lindsay Buckingham and how he got to Chicago, with a little help from his brother, Daniel, of the Zach Brown Band.
We talked Wally’s serendipitous twist with Chicago, this band he adores and has been a part of for 13 years - the woman he loves and met thanks to them, how the pandemic thwarted their wedding but not their marriage, their idyllic life off the beaten trail, Wally’s passion for all music, his influences, heroes, side projects, his amazing kids, and perhaps a few dreams he’s yet to live. I have no doubt he’ll manifest them.
Wally’s career has run the gamut of every conceivable genre of music and he’s seemingly mastered them all. As he has the gift of grace, kindness, warmth, passion, enthusiasm, and genuine charm.
My heartfelt apologies for being under the weather and careless setting up the Live––last week’s title still haunting the space, and after 4 hours of trying discovering there’s not a damn thing I can do about it.
