What other fandoms are you familiar enough with to use as an AU prompt? Pokemon Trainer AU? Homestuck AU (they'd still probably die but at least there are lots of ways to come back to life)?
I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU. I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games. I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.
Anyway, if you want list of all my fandoms… Boy howdy. I don’t think I can come up with them all. However, I can list everything that comes to mind between now and ~20 minutes from now when I have to end my procrastination break and go back to dissertating. So here it is, below the cut:

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas. (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it. As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.) There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.
Disclaimer 2: There are a crapton of errors — typos, misspelled names, misattributions, questionable genre classifications, etc. — in here. If you genuinely have no idea what a title is supposed to be, ask me. Otherwise, please don’t bother letting me know about my mistakes.
Disclaimer 3: I am not looking for recommendations. My Goodreads “To Read” list is already a good 700 items long, and people telling me “if you like X, then you’ll love Y!” genuinely stresses me the fuck out.
Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list. I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic. On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

A “view” from the Rose Garden: The nine
President Donald Trump announced his first two Supreme Court nominees in the East Room of the White House, and both in prime time on a weeknight. Many people commented on the vaguely game-show suspense the former host of “The Apprentice” brought to the process: the surprising lack of leaks about the pick, the hint that two finalists might appear for the announcement that went to then-Judge Neil Gorsuch in 2017, and the president again entering the room by himself before revealing then-Judge Brett Kavanaugh as his second pick in 2018.
Amy Coney Barrett accepts President Trump’s nomination in the Rose Garden (Mark Walsh)
Saturday’s announcement has been set for the Rose Garden at 5 p.m., obviously not prime time and on a weekend day when big news isn’t usually announced. But the president had to consider the timing of memorials for the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose seat he is aiming to fill. Then there is the presidential debate on Tuesday, and the urgency of getting the ball rolling on the confirmation process with a goal of a Senate floor vote before Election Day.
When I arrive at the White House, the press office assures me the ceremony is still on for the Rose Garden, despite a threatening cloud cover and thick humidity. I think back to coming here for President Barack Obama’s 2016 Rose Garden ceremony to announce Merrick Garland for the late Justice Antonin Scalia’s seat. That was a beautifully sunny March day, but the weather couldn’t help Garland’s nomination.
Besides the weekend vibe at the White House (there are no big-name TV correspondents here) and the threatening weather, today’s event has been drained of suspense by the leaks that emerged about 24 hours earlier, when multiple news outlets reported that Judge Amy Coney Barrett, long at the top of the president’s list, will indeed be the choice.
When the press is escorted to the Rose Garden, many guests are already seated. There is some slight distance between the chairs because of COVID-19, but only a few guests are wearing masks. A military band is out on the South Lawn, playing the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and similar martial choices.
It’s time to see who’s here. Corey Lewandowski, the president’s one-time campaign manager, had walked past the press office earlier and now is seated near the front. Gary Bauer, who served in President Ronald Reagan’s administration, led the Family Research Council, and ran for the Republican presidential nomination, is seated in the middle.
Mercedes Schlapp, a former Trump White House staff member who is now working on the president’s re-election campaign, is seated near the front. Her husband, Matthew Schlapp, the chair of the Conservative Political Action Committee, is seated farther back, next to Thomas Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch.
John Malcolm of the Heritage Foundation, who has helped draw up names for Trump’s Supreme Court lists, is here, wearing a mask. I don’t see Leonard Leo, who also helped draw up such lists when he was with the Federalist Society.
Christine Rousselle, a reporter with the Catholic News Agency, helps me identify a few other guests, including Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List, and Jeanne Mancini, the president of March for Life, a similar group.
Rousselle also points out the Rev. John I. Jenkins, the president of the University of Notre Dame, where Barrett is still on the faculty even after joining the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit in 2017.
At the top of the hour, with the ceremony about to begin, another priest arrives. The Rev. Paul Scalia, a son of Antonin Scalia (for whom Barrett clerked in the 1998-99 term), arrives with some family members: his mother, Maureen Scalia, and his brother Eugene, the U.S. secretary of labor.
They are part of a rush of notables taking most of the empty seats near the front. Attorney General William Barr arrives. His acting U.S. solicitor general, Jeffrey Wall, is seated further back. At least five Republican members of the Senate Judiciary Committee arrive: Mike Lee of Utah, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Josh Hawley of Missouri.
Not long after former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, another former Republican presidential candidate, arrives, the military band strikes up “Hail to the Chief.” It’s not for Christie, of course.
A disembodied voice announces the arrival of President Trump, first lady Melania Trump, and “Judge Amy Coney Barrett and family.” If there was an ounce of suspense left, which there wasn’t, the announcer took care of that.
The family includes the nominee’s husband, Jesse Barrett, and their seven children: Emma, Vivian, Tess, John Peter, Liam, Juliet and Benjamin. They take seats in the front row and remain quiet during the ceremony, none apparently inclined to steal the spotlight as four-year-old Jack Roberts did in 2005.
Amy Howe has SCOTUSblog’s main account of the remarks by the president and Barrett. Trump is typically methodical as he reads his prepared remarks from his teleprompter, then more animated as he ad-libs.
“Her qualifications are unsurpassed … and her record is beyond reproach,” the president says. “This should be a straightforward and prompt confirmation. It should be very easy. Good luck. It’s going to be very quick. I’m sure it’ll be extremely non-controversial. We said that the last time, didn’t we?”
Barrett pays tribute to Ginsburg, as Trump did a few minutes before. She also recognizes Scalia, her mentor.
“His judicial philosophy is mine too: A judge must apply the law as written,” Barrett says. “Judges are not policymakers, and they must be resolute in setting aside any policy views they might hold.”
She notes that the president has asked her to become the ninth justice and that she is used to being in a group of nine: her family.
“While I am a judge, I’m better known back home as a room parent, carpool driver, and birthday party planner,” she says. “When schools went remote last spring, I tried on another hat. Jesse and I became co-principals of the Barrett e-learning academy. And, yes, the list of enrolled students was a very long one.”
She acknowledges her parents, Mike and Linda Coney, and the family babysitter accompanying the brood. The rest of her remarks are not heavy on substance, but she makes the point that the Supreme Court as an institution belongs to “all of us.”
“If confirmed, I would not assume that role for the sake of those in my own circle, and certainly not for my own sake,” Barrett says. “I would assume this role to serve you. I would discharge the judicial oath, which requires me to administer justice without respect to persons, do equal right to the poor and rich, and faithfully and impartially discharge my duties under the United States Constitution.”
She closes by saying that she has “no illusions that the road ahead of me will be easy, either for the short term or the long haul.”
When she is done, Trump returns to the lectern to offer a short dissent. First, he invites the Barrett family to the riser; then he recognizes the attorney general and his chief of staff, Mark Meadows. And he again thanks the senators present.
“I know you’re going to have a busy couple of weeks,” Trump tells them, “but I think it’s going to be easier than you might think.”
With that, the president leads the first lady and the Barrett clan back into the White House.

We remember.
16 years ago, my church held an impromptu service in the wake of 9/11. There was only a preliminary list of the people killed. Everybody drew little sheets of paper with a name on it from a basket, and during the prayer we each read the name we held aloud at the same time. The name I got was Stephen Dimino. I make a point to say his name out loud several times a day every 9/11.
I put a list of their names under the cut. You will be scrolling for a long time. I encourage everyone to pick out a name, write it down and say it in whatever form you communicate best be it AAC, sign language, or even keeping a photo of that person with their name if you can find a photo of them.
Some say a person’s memory stays alive as long as their name is still read or spoken. I can’t bring back the people who died that awful day, but I can use this platform to put their names out there so their memory stays alive.

Books to help you navigate homeschooling your kids
Why Homeschool?
Homeschooling has been around since antiquity. Schooling as we know it – ‘compulsory education,’ has only been around for around 150 years in the United States, with Massachusetts making the first law mandating it in 1852. Mississippi was the last state to pass laws requiring that children must go to school, and that was as recent as 1918. Even then, many of those schools in Mississippi weren’t exactly open to everyone. Originally in the US, children under seven didn’t go to school and girls only went part of the year, if their families let them go at all.
In the 1970s a new movement of homeschooling began with the introduction of John Holt’s book Teach Your Own (first published in 1981) and Dr. Raymond S. Moore’s book Better Late than Early (first published in 1975). To date, homeschooling is utilized primarily by two-parent households where both parents do not have to work full-time. The demographics of homeschooling in the United States are predominantly white, although the number of minority households that homeschool is growing steadily.
With so many schools being closed due to the COVID pandemic in the spring of 2020 and the uncertainty about the safety of reopening in the fall, more and more parents are considering homeschooling their children, at least temporarily.
Below are some resources to help get you started with sifting through the plethora of choices that are available to homeschoolers. Biblio is a fantastic place to find any book you’re looking for – whether its a math book for a certain curriculum (search by ISBN please!) or a classic children’s book to fill their private reading time.
Homeschooling 101: Basic Resources
When you’re starting to homeschool your children, the vastness of resources, and especially opinions, can be overwhelming. Here are a few books to get you started:
How Children Learn by John Holt was first published in 1967 and continues to be a classic in education. Holt’s pioneering book focused on the idea that children learn best when not pressed, but rather self-directed, as learning is as natural as breathing to them. It continued to be a popular and important resource for homeschoolers, and in the fifty years since it was published, it has sold more than a million copies.
The First Year of Homeschooling Your Child: Your Complete Guide to Getting Off to the Right Start by Linda Dobson is a comprehensive guide to developing your homeschooling philosophy and setting your curriculum. Dobson has multiple other homeschooling titles as well, such as Homeschooling: The Early Years and Homeschooler’s Success Stories.
The Ultimate Guide to Homeschooling by Deborah Bell was first published in 1997 by Thomas Nelson and has gone through 3 editions with updates since. It is a manual for providing a quality education for children while maximizing family life.
So You’re Thinking About Homeschooling: Fifteen Families Show How You Can Do It by Lisa Whelchel was published by Focus on the Family in 2005 and deals with common questions in a story-based approach using real-life examples.
The Successful Homeschool Family Handbook: A Creative and Stress-Free Approach to Homeschooling, first published in 1994 by Thomas Nelson, is a low-stress, low-cost program written by two of the pioneers of modern homeschooling, Raymond and Dorothy Moore.
Homeschooling for Excellence by David and Micki Colfax was first published in 1988 by Grand Central Publishing. The Colfax’s homeschooled their 4 sons, 3 of who went on to Harvard and all of them growing to have distinguished careers.
Planning Curriculum and Ideas for Homeschooling
Deciding to homeschool is just the beginning, but finding the right curriculum and planning a schedule for the year (much less for the day!) is another story. Here are some popular resources that can help.
Plan Your Year: Homeschool Planning for Purpose and Peace by Pam Barnhill
101 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum by Cathy Duffy
The Complete Home Learning Source Book by Rebecca Rupp is subtitled The Essential Resource Guide for Homeschoolers, Parents, and Educators Covering Every Subject from Arithmetic to Zoology.
The Ultimate Book of Homeschooling Ideas: 500+ Fun and Creative Learning Activities for Kids Ages 3-12 by Linda Dobson
Types of Homeschooling
We’ve listed eight ‘types’ of homeschooling below, although there are many different variations of homeschooling, and decisions are made based on family beliefs and the individual needs of the child. While some people follow a single type, other families meld curriculums together or decide to throw them all out the window.
Classical Homeschooling
Classical has traditionally been the most popular type of homeschooling. This method of teaching has been employed for thousands of years and has created some of the greatest minds in history. Classical homeschooling focuses on the ‘five tools of learning,’ known as the ‘Trivium’: Reason, Record, Research, Relate, and Rhetoric. The first stage of Classical homeschooling is Grammar and learning how to learn. The second stage is Logic, learning how to think and reason. The third stage is Rhetoric, where all the learned skills are sharpened and focused. Some classical homeschoolers incorporate learning Latin and Greek into their curriculum as well. It is a very structured environment, and school time and assignments are completed according to a plan.
The Well-Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home by Susan Wise Bauer and Jessi Wise was first published in 1999 by W.W. Norton and has gone on to be revised multiple times, the newest being the 4th edition in 2016.
Simply Classical : A Beautiful Education for Any Child by Cheryl Swope
The Core: Teaching Your Child the Foundations of Classical Education by Leigh A. Bortins
The Charlotte Mason Method of Homeschooling
Charlotte Mason was a 19th-century homeschooling pioneer who believed that children were people in their own respect, not merely blank slates waiting to be written on. With Charlotte Mason, short periods of learning are broken up by nature walks, and learning revolves around observation, memorization, and narration. Children are given time to journey and explore, and journaling is also an important component. Books are central to this style, with the idea of ‘Living Books’ or book that teach through the ideas that they contain rather than facts, and their ability to come alive in the mind of the child.
A Charlotte Mason Companion: Personal Reflections on the Gentle Art of Learning by Karen Andreola.
A Charlotte Mason Education: A Home Schooling How-To Manual by Catherine Levinson.
When Children Love to Learn: A Practical Application of Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy for Today by Elaine Cooper
The Living Page: Keeping Notebooks with Charlotte Mason by Laurie Bestvater
The Waldorf Method of Homeschooling
The Walford method emphasizes educating the whole child: mind, body, and spirit. Children do not use textbooks, but rather create their own. This method also discourages the use of devices such as computers or televisions. Students focus on one subject at a time, rather than switching multiple times a day. Learning by age is not used, but rather by ability. Early childhood focuses on creative play and hands-on learning, elementary introduces academic instruction and teaches students to increase imagination and manage emotions, and secondary education focuses on critical thinking, empathy, and community service.
Understanding Waldorf Education: Teaching from the Inside Out by Jack Petrash
You Are Your Child’s First Teacher: Encouraging your Child’s Natural Development by Waldorf educator Rahima Baldwin Dancy.
Leadership/Thomas Jefferson Method of Homeschooling
A Thomas Jefferson or Leadership Education training is based on seven keys to of Great Teaching and the Phases of Learning: Classics (not textbooks), Mentors (not professors), Inspire (not require), Structured Time (not content), Quality (not conformity), Simplicity (not complexity) and You (not them) as the means to providing education. Self-Education is the focus, along with the goal of promoting and inspiring a life-long journey of learning. This method of homeschooling was popularized by the writing and teaching of Oliver and Rachel DeMille.
A Thomas Jefferson Education: Teaching a Generation of Leaders for the Twenty-First Century by Oliver DeMille.
A Thomas Jefferson Home Companion by Oliver DeMille, Rachel DeMille and Diann Jeppson.
Montessori Based Homeschooling
Although generally associated with a separate school, the Montessori method focuses on free movement and unstructured time as catalysts to learning. Montessori emphasizes using real tools instead of toys and allowing students real-world situations in which to learn.
Teaching Montessori in the Home: The Pre-School Years by Elizabeth Hainstock
How to Raise an Amazing Child the Montessori Way by Tim Seldin
Teach Me To Do It Myself: Montessori Activities for Your and Your Child by Maja Pitamic
Interest-Led Homeschooling
With Interest-Led learning, studies are structured around children’s interests. Sometimes called Delight-Directed, it does require parents to get a little creative with curriculum and move studies to follow whatever the child has grown an interest in. Some parents integrate Interest-Led with traditional curriculum work, and many Interest-Led homeschoolers may use the “Unit Studies” System, where a theme is picked, whether it be a holiday, location, place, or historical events, and students look at many subjects within that theme.
The Call of the Wild + Free: Reclaiming Wonder in Your Child’s Education by Ainsley Arment
Unschooling
Unschooling is loosely tied with Interest-Led Homeschooling. Unschooling focuses on experiential, activity-based learning. It is a rejection of traditional schooling and uses no curriculum nor does it set aside hours for schooling. The idea is that children will naturally learn all they need to know through their own curiosity and trust is put completely on them for the learning process.
Home Grown: Adventures in Parenting off the Beaten Path, Unschooling, and Reconnecting with the Natural World by Ben Hewitt.
Home-At-School
There is also the Home-At-School method which utilizes a full curriculum either through a public or private school or company. Much of this is computer-reliant, although textbooks are integrated into the learning as well.
That said, many homeschoolers do what is called ‘Relaxed’ or ‘Eclectic’ homeschooling, merging multiple ideas into a style that fits the needs of their individual children.
Making Homeschooling Work
Homeschooling for the Rest of Us: How Your One-of-a-Kind Family Can Make Homeschooling and Real Life Work by Sonya Haskins
The Brave Learner: Finding Everyday Magic in Homeschool, Learning and Life by Julie Bogart
Books about Books for Homeschoolers
One of the central themes of all the homeschooling methods, including unschooling, is the importance of good books.
Integrating a love of reading and exciting books into any child’s life sets them up for success. Studies show that students who read 20 minutes a day have a 90% likelihood of scoring better than their peers on standardized tests. And one thing an overwhelming majority of very successful adults have in common is a love and active pursuit of reading. The following books are used by homeschoolers to provide guidance on picking books, but any parent and child can benefit from the information they provide.
Books to Build On: A Grade-by-Grade Resource Guide For Parents and Teachers by E.D.Hirsch
Read for the Heart: Whole Books for Wholehearted Families by Sarah Clarkson
Honey for a Child’s Heart : The Imaginative Use of Books in Family Life by Gladys Hunt
What other methods might we include in this list? What are your favorite homeschooling or classic books?

Jackson Hole is full of athletes—from weekend warriors to professionals and the extreme. It’s the kind of place where your second-grade teacher is an ultra-marathon runner and your doctor is currently training to ascend Everest.
As a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction teacher, I walk around this relatively small town and run into people who know what I do for a living. Often the first thing I hear is, “Oh but, I don’t need training in mindfulness. Running/skiing/climbing/biking is my moving meditation.”
For the most part, I believe that answer.
The self-awareness and mental precision I learned from my years as a competitive skier and mountain biker were my doorway into contemplative practice. I can consistently count on finding flow and feeling at ease within myself when I take part in those sports.
I once spent all my weekends in full flow, out in the mountains, completely ignoring the fact that my career was depleting me and the stress of it was negatively impacting my relationships and family life.
Rather than being a substitute for mindfulness practice, I look at sports as one medium for integrating mindfulness and encountering “the full catastrophe of life,” as Jon Kabat-Zinn, the pioneer of MBSR, so aptly describes it: joy, elation, fear, peace, illness, injury, and loss.
But, sports can also be a great avoidance strategy.
I once spent all my weekends in full flow, out in the mountains, filing my bucket, and completely ignoring the fact that my career was depleting me and the stress of it was negatively impacting my relationships and family life.
And more than one athlete has ended up in MBSR following an injury, unable to function fully in daily life without their regular source of feel-good endorphins.
For many athletes, the experience of positive emotion, focused mind, and relaxation found through sport does not translate into other activities of life. You would think body awareness would be the natural gateway to self-awareness, since both are seated in the brain region the insular cortex, yet that does not seem to consistently be the case.
For many, the experience of positive emotion, focused mind, and relaxation found through sport does not translate into other activities of life.
Sports themselves are not inherently mindful—but they can be an excellent way to explore and even enhance mindfulness. Neuroscientist Richard Davidson suggests that the increased neuroplasticity during aerobic activity could make “contemplative aerobics” a key time to practice mindfulness.
So what makes an activity a mindfulness practice? And how can we use mindfulness to develop a deeper relationship to ourselves in sports and otherwise?
How to Create a Mindful Movement Practice
Any activity is a mindfulness practice if it incorporates paying attention to the present moment—but being present alone isn’t enough. You need to be present and compassionate: paying attention to what’s going on in your body and mind without harsh judgment. We give ourselves permission to be with things as they are, even if they’re not ideal.
Here’s how your love of sports can help you become mindful every day.
Mindfulness is all about practice. You have to practice being present and compassionate. When you anchor your attention on the sensation of the breath or somewhere in the body, your mind is going to wander. Remember, there’s no way to “shut off” your thoughts, (and thoughts can be useful information about your current experience), but you can practice bringing your mind back to the breath. Practice with non-judgment, non-striving. This is how we foster an attitude that cultivates compassion, or as we say in MBSR, “taking care of ourselves.”
Mindfulness works best with a training schedule. Train your mind like you would your body. Just as with sports, you need practice to develop your skills. To develop mindfulness, you need something that is familiar to athletes: a training schedule. Pick a regular time during the day to practice honing your attention with compassion.
When you train you can target the areas you need most. Just like training for sports, you can choose particular mindfulness practices to develop specific areas. Body scans and breathing meditations may decrease rumination. Loving-kindness meditations may help you connect more strongly with others. Observing your thoughts while meditating may increase your ability to gain perspective.
Mindfulness helps you drop into flow. Mindfulness lays the foundation for flow experiences. As my colleague Pete Kirchmer, Director of mPEAK at UCSD, describes, flow can’t be forced into being, “Flow is an accident. Mindfulness helps you to be more accident prone.” By practicing mindfulness regularly we may prime for flow.
Mindfulness is about the journey and who you meet along the way. Mindfulness provides a path to happiness that’s enduring. It’s not about winning or losing, it’s not about things succeeding or failing. It’s about showing up no matter how things are going—noticing what’s happening in the moment and choosing to meet it. We immerse ourselves in joyful and pleasant moments when they happen, while also accepting when things get hard.
