What is the difficulty curve like for american schooling? What is the usual pass/fail threshold? Here it is 50% with the peak of the bell curve (intentionally set and recalibrated every year) at 70%, so you get at least ±2 STDs of student marks captured between 50% and 90%. Which makes me think the exams/assignments themselves must be more difficult than their american versions. Ive heard that in some schools anything below 70% is an F, can that be true? The exam itself has to be easier in that case, surely

i might be the wrong person to ask, and not only because im not an expert or informed about the details of the current American school system, and im approaching middle age so my experience is now out of date, so maybe an actual teacher can correct me, but my experience in american K-12 education was that everything is made up and the points dont matter. i dont think it's standardized here at all. each teacher had their own grading opinions and some classes i went to were on a curve, some weren't, some were pass-fail, "cool' teachers would often say stuff like "everyone in here has an A right now. the only way you will lose that grade is by not showing up and not doing you work" and then would ding you points every time you fucked up, etc.

i have absolutely no idea what my HS GPA was, never cared about participating in graduation so i didn't go, and I think iirc I graduated late anyway (or they were threatening to withhold my diploma or something?) because of fucking gym credits (i have a connective tissue disorder, exercise-triggered asthma, crippled knees, and POTS, and kept telling adults that the stuff we were doing in PE class was hurting and injuring me, to which they would respond that i was "out of shape"), which my lawyer mother managed to get dropped from my graduation requirements by successfully proposing that my after school activities like dance and semi-pro theater and bartering stable work for horse riding time were sufficiently athletic to quality as PE. she was right btw i was working my ass off. anyway thanks mom. but again this is equivalent to Ryan Stiles successfully arguing that Drew Carey should give him ten points for the improvised limericks about the battle of Thermopylae instead of 3, and then Carey doing so.

TEST SCORES are standardized, and the Bush-era No Child Left Behind reforms turned my HS from a school where you go to class and do schoolwork into a test prep and test taking warehouse over one summer. it was an actual nightmare. i also dont know what my test scores were. probably bad

so basically my experience was that i never knew what my GPA was anyway because i both didnt care, and also whatever counted as a "credit" wasnt standardized either so it was impossible to keep track of. the causative order of these two things could go either way, idk if i didnt care because grades were too confusing, or if grades were confusing just to me because i didn't care.

edit: i also didn't have any friends who knew/were keeping track of what their GPA was during school. people either graduated or dropped out nd some of them got sent to summer school ("bad kids") and we would see the scores marked on assignments when the assignments were handed back, but cumulative, ongoing awareness of "how well are you doing in school officially"? maybe there were really on-the-ball kids who knew this information but if there were i never heard anyone talk about it and had no awareness whatsoever where any of my peers stood in school credit rankings.

Happy FFWF, my lovely friend 🥰 I apologize in advance for the deluge of notifications today, cause I’m gonna be answering all your asks finally!!

But I love this question! It’s such a good one! I think I’ll write a limerick for my most recent fic, Welcome Home My Boy (Welcome Home My Son) where Tony decided (with some help from Pepper) to take in a few orphans at a run-down orphanage while it gets renovated and updated, and one of those orphans is none other than a little Peter Parker 🥰

Stark’s life was never so full

Pete’s life was getting quite dull

Some months together

And, two birds of a feather,

They became two halves of one whole

OKAY so tumblr swallowed my first ask whole :( so ill do it again. on my laptop instead. 

But. Anon...ur a genius...so smart...too smart. this could be too good, know?

God. 

Jason: GAA lad, of course. Plays county and he will tell you this. He plays county with football and only club with hurling. He’s a pure GAA Lad. He doesn’t drink, eats full course meals for every meal and goes to the local gym every day. He plays with the school and is the captain. He wears O’Neills and Jack and Jones. He’s got that hair-cut, the curls and the short at the side? But despite how straight-laced he seems, he’s kind. Popular, but he’s got a few close friends and that’s it. He helps people with their work and never has a mean word to say. He does bag-packing in Supervalu for charities. He’s a good catch and many a girl want him as their debs date. His family is rich, too, so he goes to those summer colleges in the Gaeltacht. He’s still pretty bad at gaeilge though. Which is a shame cause he’s basically a fenian. His Dad is from Derry (bogside) and it shows sometimes. He goes to mass every Sunday and knows the Father by name, but religion doesn't seem for him. He wants to be a primary school teacher and everyone knows he’ll get a sports scholarship to go to UL. He’s a swot but he’s sound out, at the same time. Unironically listens to kneecap. 

Leo: Boy-racer with a suped up Mitsubishi. He fixed it up himself but it keeps getting taking by the gardaí. He is a public menace on dark country roads. He’s a lads lad, who vapes in the bathrooms with the stolls and drinks naggins in bushes before trying to sneak into a night club. Class clown, but nice enough if you can get him on his own. But he’s also smart. Too smart. Trinity bound, or even further. 625 on the lc, with higher-level maths, physics, and chemistry. An absolute dosser, but he’s always got the homework and if you can find him on his own, he’s nice enough. He and Jason are a strange match in friends. He wears Jason’s O’Neill’s jumpers and people pretend not to stare. Leo, like most teens in Ireland, has been familiar with a bottle of vodka for a while. He’s that absolute weapon you see on Instagram getting their picture with a garda at Longitude, vodka hidden in a bottle of Lucozade. Mexican-American mom from the states but born and raised in Ireland. Buys all his clothes from Pennys. Can’t be assed to go anywhere else. He doesn’t play any club sport at all. He’s banned from the local church for accidentally decapitating the Holy Mary during his confirmation. He has a thick cork accent, calls his house a “gaff” and gets “langered while he’s gatting”. He adores The Academic and Fontaines D.C. Though, like most people, he’s enamored with The Rubberbandits. 

Piper: Addidas Superstars, ofc. Jack and Jones hoddies she stole from Jason. Air maxes. She also buys a lot from St Vincent DePaul’s charity shops. Captain of the schools debate team and she sells fake IDs on her snapchat as a side-hustle. Her Dad moved them to Ireland when Piper was around 7 cause he got a job with RTE or something. She hangs in the art-room most days and almost won Junkoture when she was 16. She lets Leo drunkenly cut her hair every few months and it leaves them both in stitches. She was also the Queen of loom bands as a child and still makes friendship bracelets for them all out her loom band collection. Piper also plays Camogie with her school, but that’s just because she has a crush on the captain. Both her and Leo are the only ones who go on the sesh. Jason stays at home and watches re-runs of home and away every Friday night. She has a noticeable American accent and gets called a yank or tourist a lot. Piper would kill men for EDEN and The Cranberries. 

Also: it has to take place in cork city. dublin sucks, galway city is like seven streets and limerick is literally called stab city.

Week 2

First week of my maybe classes is done and over. I found out Tuesday night that a class (which has been preapproved by the university) I wanted to take I couldn’t because we don’t allow pass/fail classes (I checked and this class has only been offered as a pass/fail, but like whatever I guess). So I had to pick a different class which only meets later on Mondays (1400-1700), which is okay because I can come back from weekend trips early Monday and I’ll be fine. So Monday I’ll have to go to that class and get added to the SULIS page so that it officially becomes part of my class list. Other than that, my classes seem real chill. Most of them have an essay/group project and a final exam and that’s it. No quizzes/tests in between really (expect the small possibility in my Major Author class). My major author class, we are studying (drumroll) Marilynne Robinson. The prof thought it would be a cool person to read since she’s American... nice. It’s not too bad, we got a week to read the first book (it’s a little less than 250 pages, so it’s not long at all). LIO (Limerick Inside Out) is a volunteer module I get credit for and it’s all about doing community service projects around Limerick and downtown Limerick. It seems really cool and a lot of fun, so I’m excited. My psych class I’m super excited for and then my Celtic and Civ class seems okay. It’s a mix of learning about the kings and other history stuff and the other half of the 2-hour lecture is all about folklores and oral traditions, which interests me much more. On another note, I did the Ring of Kerry today. There was some really cool water-type pictures and we stopped at the ocean again, which is always one of my favourites. There were a lot of cool little stops, my favourite being either Waterville or Sneem. It was a good, cute little day trip. Next week (early Friday morning) I will be on my way to Germany to visit a real good friend of mine who is studying in Marburg for the semester. I will be spending the weekend with him (I’m going to the Frankfurt Zoo while I’m there, which is def something I’m really looking forward to) and I think he said he wanted to do some hiking on Saturday and we aren’t sure what we’re going to do on Sunday yet. I will eventually have to go back or stop in Heidelberg one weekend when I’m near Germany to meet my other friend, who I met at WHS when I was a senior since he studied abroad during his HS years. Anyways, I’m excited to see my friend and visit him for the weekend. Plane ticket was really cheap (€9.99 each way!) So it’s not too bad to go visit him for the long weekend and it saves me more money since I don’t need to pay for a hostel. I’ve also started planning my spring break trip with some of my friends I’ve met here for Italy. It is packed, but it is also going to be so much fun, I cannot wait. Hoping tomorrow I figure out when my friend Madi wants to do Paris (+ Disney) and London (HP mostly) so that my travel companion and I can figure out the rest of our trips. Once everything is planned, I’ll probably post dates where I’m expected to be so that everyone can keep up. Not planning on bringing my laptop with me on weekend excursions, only for Italy so that I can update daily on what I did and what’s to come and all that fun stuff. I will post pics of today later tonight!

So, Valentine’s Day is around the corner. a while back, I wrote their first Valentine’s together, and how it happened, but ...I kind of retconned myself with Something About Us, and some of it doesn’t make sense timeline wise. At this point in the story, it was some mutual pining but of course neither of them could not get those feelings out (until SAU). They have kissed, but it was more like instances of accidents and a quick smooch on the cheek. Then there was that one kiss that was too long...

ANYWAY, before the ‘canonical’ change, junior year of HS:

it’s a couple of days out from Valentine’s Day. Brian’s reading some manga about romance while John’s trying to study for a Chemistry test. John’s curious about the book, and asks Brian about it. “wait, since when do you like sappy shit?” John asks.

“I love sappy shit,” Brian replies. To his horror, John takes the book and thumbs through it, but he’s reading it backwards so he already knows the ending. The manga is about this girl who’s in love with the popular senior guy, and all of the girls in their class are vying for the second button off of his uniform.*

(*based on this tv drama... basically the second button is the button closest to the heart, and that’s where all the love is. so to give it to someone around graduation time is basically saying ‘hey, i love you, here’s my heart’. that’s the gist of it. ...it’s kind of romantic...)

John is intrigued by this, and asks if he could read it on the bus/train ride home. Brian is recluntant but he lets him anyway on the grounds that he won’t spoil it. And tells him to read right to left.

There’s also a word that John calls Brian when he’s being playful and that word is mahal. Brian wants to know what it means because he always has this wistful, soft look to him whenever he says it, but John refuses, telling him to not worry about it (but it’s very positive).

John’s very quiet after reading the book. Brian is too. There’s a sudden awkwardness between them.

It’s Valentine’s Day. Brian isn’t a fan of it. He’d much rather stay home. It’s not like he’ll get anything. He hasn’t in the history of ever. The ride to school was silent as well as the walk there. There were love notes taped to John’s locker. Some of them are odd because they were from his ex-girlfriends and others trying to butter him up (when Brian asked about it later on).

It’s extended homeroom because Student Council has to make deliveries, and what a shock John got a shitload of chocolates and flowers? He shouts, “You don’t even like chocolate!” and he storms out.

They don’t see each other until 5th period English class.

John sits on the first couch and Brian sits on the third couch, so pretty much across from each other. They’re not even looking at each other. It’s not lost on everybody, including the teacher, that something went down. A week ago, she assigned the class of making up love poems/limericks/etc for Valentine’s Day, and willing to give ten extra credit points to volunteer and read theirs outloud. 

The night before, John was up at his desk working on the assignment. 

So, when the teacher asks if anyone else wants to go, John raises his hand. He’s looking straight at Brian when he does this. There’s fire in his eyes. He has papers in his hand. 

“I know this is English class,” he starts out, “but I wrote this in Filipino... there’s some things I couldn’t translate. It’d be lost.”

He gets up, passes the stuff around. John undoes his hastily made braid. He looks wild. “Brian? Can you come up here?” 

Everyone’s like

but Brian is especially “???” but he does anyway. He’s defensive, crossing his arms over his chest. What’s he up to? 

John starts out with, “Mahal...” and then... he goes off. Now, ya’ll, teen!John had some intense emotions, and this isn’t an exception. He reads in a dramatic fashion --

First, I ask you to forgive me. I never once knew the feelings you had for me, or even tried to recognize them. I never realized how much hurt I've put you through, day and night, these past few years. I know you're angry and bitter as you look to others. Scared too. You ask, "What if?" everyday, but out of fear, you don't. And I never thought to ask you, "What if?" I always looked the other way, not thinking. The answer was always in front of me. As I look at you, now, I can only ask, "Will you be able to forgive me for being so blind?"

The other day, you asked me what mahal meant. Mahal means two things. Things that are precious, and love. It's basically the same thing. You're precious to me, mahal. When I see you, I feel joy. Just one look from you and I melt. When I sing, I sing to you. When I fight, I fight for you. When I'm tired, I look to you for strength. Without you, I'm nothing. You're my sunshine, mahal. Without you, I can never grow. I want you to know that. I want you to know my true feelings. There are no others. My heart beats for you. Only you. I'll always protect you. I'll never abandon you, mahal, and I'll always love you.”

John switches to English in the back half of the second paragraph. After he finishes talking, he rips off the second button of his shirt and gives it to Brian. Brian is stunned. The whole class is stunned. Ms. Bautista is sipping on her tea. Don’t worry ya’ll, she’s a cool teacher. 

...again, they don’t talk until it’s time to go home.

The ride home... John explains everything. He obviously got the button idea from the manga, but he wasn’t satisfied with the ending of it (the girl in question did not get the button). It didn’t help that the guy was a huge jerk and some other plot stuff... the flowers and chocolates he had sent to himself. He did end up with getting stuff from other people, but those were the more important ones. He knew that Brian is short of being a chocolate fiend, so he made sure to get a lot of it. And they’re the fancy kind.

Brian asks why didn’t he say something sooner. John replies along the lines of being afraid of what would happen next; Brian hasn’t shown any clear feelings for him let alone anyone else (that he knew of) so it was like ‘do you really like me or nah?’ ...basically, mutual pining with a side of miscommunication. Brian then asks about the notes; they were from John’s exes but he didn’t want anything to do with them, but he exchanged pleasantries anyway. 

Brian apologizes that he’d been acting like an asshole all day, stating that V-Day just isn’t a good day for him at all. This is when John offers, “well, maybe next year would be better? 👀”

“are you asking me...?”

“i said i loved you about six different times. of course I’m serious. I don’t throw that word around a lot like confetti.” 

so... they kiss on it. a quick smooch like before. (but it’s not made official until SAU so, another two-three weeks passed before The Kiss happened).

and that’s their first V-Day before I kinda/sorta retconned some things.

Ah.. I don't know if this is a dumb question or not.. but I recently saw an amazing production of a Shakespeare show and I've been in Macbeth for my senior year of hs but I've noticed that in both of those performances.. we didn't really have iambic pentameter.. so my question here is are actors when performing Shakespeare SUPPOSED to have that iambic pentameter rhythm?

More traditional productions will really abide by that meter, or scansion as we call it.  But it’s not just about making it sound like a limerick by exaggerating the syllables--there is an art to studying the meter of a line!  For instance, if there’s an extra beat, adding it up to 11 syllables instead of 10, it’s called a feminine ending, which has its own implications.  Each piece of punctuation has significance, each change in emphasis...  It’s pretty fascinating!  More contemporary productions may not pay much attention to scansion, because there is a reputation for it getting in the way of the language if it is just static and dry speaking.  It still needs to be alive, and true masters of Shakespeare can balance both.  They can honor the scansion and study the lines while still making it feel real and alive!  So I guess the answer is...  There is no “supposed to” in theatre.  But if you’re ignoring the scansion of a Shakespeare piece, you’re missing out on some really juicy analysis and meaning!
