Video Games and Renovation
Someone has just received an old decrepit plot of land and it is up to the player to fix it up and restore it to its former glory. Now, which game did I just describe? The Harvest Moon/ Story of Seasons Series? Maybe Stardew Valley? Perhaps House Flipper? Why limit ourselves to primarily pc/console games, what about Garden Scapes, Home Scapes, or Lilys Garden?  Or did I just break these popular games down to one sentence? With only a few keyword changes such as the plot of land into a farm, or garden, or even received into inheritance. All these games follow the same essential plotline boiled down to essentials with the variations on plot and game mechanics. Yet with the example of Harvest Moon, a beloved franchise has spawned around essentially the same concept used repeatedly to the delight of generations.
Now besides the promise of new waifus and husbandos abound along why do people enjoy this game? Is it because of the farming aspect? But then why is House Flipper and Garden Scapes are popular too if they have the same plot but entirely different gameplay. So that means the plot strikes a chord amongst playing audiences. Taking a look at the key demographics of the games reveals the reason for this popularity.
According to Statista 45 percent of gamers are females along with the demographics of 18 to 35 with the casual gaming and life simulator games ranking high in the most played. So the stats indicate that the average gamer is a generation z/ millennial and female. A generation characterized by a plague of stress, mental disorders, and lack of income. The pop culture icon of this generation(s) is Aggretsuko, an anime 25-year-old red panda overwhelmed with a harsh accounting job and seemingly no peace.
Contrast that with the easy-going nature of the games mentioned earlier a picture develops. People enjoy these games due to stress and problems that they have little control over. In these games, they can choose what furniture their home has, or the ability to create their own schedule, explore, and perhaps a chance to rekindle with an idealistic life that only previous generations were able to experience. Perhaps even the chance to improve a place.
For a more pathos approach, I grew up in a southern rural town filled with abandoned houses that looked to be one sneeze away from collapsing with the yard covered in glass, grass, and hypodermic needles. The garrulous elders would then tell you about how it was the belle of the town, and then they would amplify the picture by talking about the town filled with shops, but when you look you only see a graveyard of buildings. Now you can’t do anything because you have no means of fixing it, but in the digital world of these games, it is a duty of the player to fix this situation. It gave me hope that maybe I could do it. Those places can be restored along with hope. That the townsfolk are potential friends and not probable threats to your wellbeing.  For me at least these games gave me hope and let me see a brighter future.
Although it needs to be noted that not every person of the demographic lived in the poverty-stricken town living in a thick miasma of despair. Hopefully, the majority of the demographic lived relatively peaceful lives in a big town or city. So another appeal has to be present besides the niche hope-giving and old generation living aspects. So the third aspect must lie paradoxically outside and inside the premise of the game, the aesthetic. Cottage Core and Farm Core are aesthetics found on Tumblr with that focus on nature and farmer lifestyle and aesthetic that is growing popularity amongst the youth. An aesthetic that all of these games fit like a glove.
With this cauldron fully brewed, I at least have an understanding of these games. From the aesthetic to the demographics and the ideals presented leads to an understanding of this generation. There is a pressing issue here, the generations are falling further and further away from being able to achieve the goals off their parents and grandparents. Life instead of a peaceful adventure is now a stressful task with no end. And the only escape is through a video game. Pixels and numbers keep our stress down as we watch the world warp and change in a thousand different ways. But how can we fix it? Most of the games I have referenced have the economy nonexistent or very lax. Disabilities seem to not exist in this world. Only two characters in the games can be considered homeless, but they are portrayed in a light that rarely reflects the real world. What can we do?
