if i had a nickel for every time my gf went utterly buckwild for a sci-fi series about a Gifted Kid Kinda Outcast But Wants To Be Included So Badly lesbian who gets an older, deeply traumatised, completely morally unhinged, snarky and horny on main queer man implanted in her brain and consequently gets involved in a rebellion against the very Intergalactic Space Empire she longed so badly to belong in, which forces her to make impossible moral choices and in which her capacity to feel connection to and compassion for creatures who are commonly regarded as non-persons plays an essential role

hello yes everyone watch space sweepers pls (it's on netflix if that's convenient for you). it's a korean film about a ragtag crew of morally dubious underpaid essential workers who clean up space debris and accidentally adopt a child, which turns them into a found family and encourages them to fight a very thinly veiled allegory for elon musk and put a stop to the unchecked spread of hypercapitalism, eugenicism and climate change

the main cast consists of

young sad dad with tragic backstory that turned him cold and callous but finding a new child Opens Up His Heart

ex-drug cartel leader who is the biggest softie on the team and also a terrifyingly competent fighter and who falls in love with The Child in 0.2 seconds

heavily gay-coded alcoholic captain lady who is v badass but suffers from I give too many fucks disease instead of i don't give a fuck disease which is So refreshing for Badass Female Characters TM (also she's an icon who already tried to assasinate Melon Usk once)

a robot who is EXPLICITLY A TRANS WOMAN and spends the entire movie saving up for gender confirmation surgery and is kind of the mom friend but also a snarky disaster and just casually hangs out in space bc she's a robot and has amazing taste in horrible sweaters

Baby Child with a genetic disease and kind of superpowers who loves drawing, gets instantly attached to above-mentioned nonsense crew and farts a lot

the theme of the movie is "be gay, do crime, unionise, seize the means of production, recognise essential workers, also eugenicism and climate change are irretrievable tied to capitalism and the system must be dismantled"

also it does rly cool things with language: all characters are supposed to have a translation implant which means that the cast can all understand each other no matter what language they speak but the audience just hears them speak their own language - mostly korean, since the main cast is korean, but also v often english or french or mandarin or german. I think you hear about a dozen languages in total in the movie, which means subtitles are p much essential, but the concept is just so cool and so much more realistic than "in the future everyone conveniently speaks english" or "they all speak different languages yes yes but translation chips make everything come out as english for your convenience, oh audience, and also bc linguistic diversity is unimportant"
