everyone knew what a witch looked like. at this time of year, a costume like that was an absolute classic, for making scares and also somehow for those who thought of halloween to dress up less scarily but more with other aspects in focus -- something that elmer had never really understood. the point was, he knew a witch costume when he saw one, despite witch costumes not really looking much like the witches he'd known back in the days.
"cool, a witch!" he complimented pointing with a finger gun. "i used to be the child of a witch!" so the church had said even though his mother technically hadn't been one, but when the inquisition arrived their word became law, mostly. "now i'm bacon. not sure if this is an upgrade or a downgrade." a hearty laughter followed in the wake of his silly commentary.

this was absolutely fantastic. as far as he could remember the only person who so easily had gone along with his jokes was a madman back in the 30's. good times. wonder how he was doing now? probably dead. oh well.
"fear or no fear, in my experience it depends on the place. when i was travelling around europe there seemed to be much more focus on the scariness than there was in america." beside a lot of the costumes represented fears people had for the non-existent, and elmer was of the opinion that it couldn't be scary if it didn't exist. unlike bacon. "if i haven't scared you away yet, my name is elmer. i'm happy to meet someone with that great a smile!"
She smiles and nods—and then his last comment gets an unexpected laugh from her. "That is scary!" Whether the bacon itself, or the idea of being it.

"I'll admit, I didn't think much about the fear factor myself. You could say I'm just... playing to type."

great! one who knew how to take a joke and continue it! had he been met with a 'that doesn't even make sense' or a 'that's not funny' he would still have worked it out somehow, but it certainly was easier like this.
"sometimes sticking to the classics is best, gotta say." some might say low effort or boring, but not elmer. one could even determine his own costume to be low effort or even unbefitting the season, but he had a very good reason for his choices. "don't think i ever have been processed meat before either. not sure though. but i had to think about the scariest thing i could, and here we are."
So Lilith decided to go with the unoriginal. It's funny: the rest of the year, she goes around being asked if she's an elf or occasionally a vampire, but a simple change of clothes suddenly clarifies what she is to everyone. The dress is slightly shorter than she'd like—intentionally ragged, like something Eda would wear—but she found a nice pair of tights to go with it.

"Why, thank you." She recognizes that gesture and points right back. This is a party, after all; it wouldn't do to be awkward! "I can't say I've ever spoken to processed meat before. Stranger things have happened, I suppose."
