Lili Vogel has also written an accompanying book to the KvB-trilogy called "Liebling des Unheils". It's solely focused on Hagen and takes place between volume 1 and 2.
Hagen and Gunther are also side characters with their own POV chapters in Lili Vogel's book "Dietrich von Bern. König ohne Reich und Krone", which focuses on the humorous adventures of Dietrich von Bern and Hildebrand.
Day 15. Favorite adaptation
Finally! Writer's block, begone!
If asked before 2024, I would have definitely said that my favorite adaptation was the 1924 film by Fritz Lang. Don't get me wrong, I still love it, and I'm sure I'll watch it again. But you see... Gosh, I remember it so well. It was May 7th, 2024, I was browsing nibelungen-rezeption.de instead of going to bed and saw a line in the list of Nibelungen novels that said:
Lili Vogel: „Der König von Burgund“. Bd. 1. „Der König von Burgund und die Geisel“. Roman
And I thought, omg, a whole series called "Der König von Burgund" and a vol. 1 that has "hostage" in the title??? I know what it's gonna be about! I need to check it out! So yeah, surprising to absolutely no one, I will talk about the König von Burgund series by Lili Vogel.
A couple of details in case this post will be seen by someone who's never heard of these books. First, you can buy Kindle or paper copies on Amazon. Second, it was initially planned as a four-part series, but only three books have been published so far. Nevertheless, they work as a trilogy in terms of plot and composition so you won't be left wondering about what happens next. (Just go and read them already! ;))
Honestly, I don't even know where to start. I understand that, technically, it would be fine to simply say that KvB is my favorite adaptation, period, and proceed to the next question. But I can't do that! I feel a burning need to elaborate and explain, even though the explanation might get quite incoherent ^^"
First things first... THE AUTHOR IS A FAN OF HAGEN AND GUNTHER AND THIS IS WHY I LOVE THESE BOOKS SO MUCH. Yes, I had to write that in all caps!
Ahem... So anyway. As the title suggests, this is a prequel to the Nibelungenlied focusing on Hagen, Gunther, and their relationship. This is exactly the story I once wanted to write—and exactly the one I've always wanted to read! I've been really intrigued by the events that were only briefly mentioned in the Waltharius—Gunther ascending the throne and Hagen coming back to Worms—and often wondered about how Hagen and Gunther became who they are in the NL (and who they are for each other, too). Well, Lili Vogel offers her version of their "origin story", and it's a really captivating one!
Speaking about versions, it should come as no surprise that KvB deviates from the Nibelungenlied in numerous ways, some of them very significant. At the same time, it was clearly the author’s intent to be very respectful towards the NL and stick to it in many, many aspects, but like… with a twist that adds a lot of dramatic tension. Isn’t this something we’re all looking for in a good adaptation—a careful but inventive exploration of the poem's interpretative potential? There is no doubt that Lili Vogel is thoroughly familiar with the NL, with other Middle Ages renditions of the Nibelungen material, with the key works derived from/based upon it, as well as with more obscure ones, and with the range of readers’ typical interpretations of the NL that took place over time. So the more allusions/references you can recognize, the more enjoyable your reading experience will be!
There are so many things that I love about these books... let me name just a couple. For example, it's fascinating to look at character development. Both Gunther and Hagen here have their iconic traits that we recognize from the NL or from other adaptations ("Gunther did what he did best: he hesitated"), but they still have a long way to go before they grow into the characters we meet in the NL. Another thing that I enjoy immensely is Gunther’s POV (yes please!!!), these are my favorite chapters, and I love Vogel's characterization of Gunther. And a special mention goes out to a beautiful and vibrant recreation of High Middle Ages mentality and material culture! It's so refreshing to see a story based on the Nibelungenlied set in the time when the poem was actually created!! We need more of those <3
Okay, I can talk about Lili Vogel's books for HOURS and literally to the point of losing my voice (yes, it has happened). They make me INSANELY happy, and there are days when I can't believe that someone wrote something like that about my favorite NL characters. If we ever get to see Book 4 come out, I'd be so happy I might die. XD

Day 30
One thing you’d change about the Nibelungenlied
This is a minor thing, but I would change the name of Dankrât, the father of Kriemhild and her brothers (who is only mentioned once or twice in the Nibelugenlied). Everywhere else he’s called Gibich/Gybich/Gibica/Gjuki etc. With his children’s names being Gunther, Gernot, Giselher and Kriemhild/Grimhild – there is obviously a tradition in the family of alliterating names to G (which corresponds to the names of the historical Burgundian kings). The Nibelungenlied poet cannot simply break with this tradition like that! xD
The commentary of one of my Nibelungenlied editions (Deutscher Klassiker Verlag) states, that it's not clear, according to research, why the poet replaced the name (the name Gibeche is reintroduced in the manuscript k of the Nibelungenlied). I personally assume the name Dankrât might have been a reference to a patron or some figure in the poet’s environment.
But I will never accept it as my personal canon! xD
There is even a person named Gibeche in the Nibelungenlied, but he’s just some random knight at Etzel’s court.
Challenge over!
Thank you so much @haljathefangirlcat for creating the Nibelungen challenge all those years ago, it was a lot of fun to participate! And thank you, @galarix and @haljathefangirlcat for all your comments – it's been a lot of fun to converse with you so much about the Nibelungenlied! 😊

Hey!
Merry Christmas, everyone!
How are you? How was your year? I hope all is well or getting better.
I'd like to tag the people who are especially important to me. Those who have become incredibly important to me in such a short period of time. Those who continue to make me happy.
@almost-an-artist . Lily, my beautiful Lily! I am very glad that we have started communicating with you. It seems like we've been in touch for no more than three months.... But I feel like we've been talking forever. And, oh... Your work continues to shock me to the core. Did I mention that I'm genuinely in love with your artwork?
@whyoneartheven. Oh, Evie! You were literally my third followers and, damn. You're so wonderful. You're a pleasure to hang out with, even though we don't do it too often. You're really cool, and your artwork..... I truly love your style. I hope you're doing well
@kiwi-der-vogel . You know how much I love your work. It's just beautiful. Beautiful in every way. And you yourself... Kiwi, you're wonderful. Yes, we've barely spoken, but I'm truly glad to have you. Thank you
@prince-of-red-lions . Oh, great Windy! You don't know how impressed I am with you. You're very sweet. And you're a pleasure to talk to. I'm really glad I got to know you. And, oh, my goddesses. Windy, I love your art!
@akchimp75 . You're precious. I'm sorry we're not communicating right now. I really hope we can fix this. I really, truly consider you my friend and I want to apologize to you for being very passive lately.
@undertheopensky. A wonderful person. I don't know what else to say. You're beautiful. I'm really glad we're in touch, even if not as often.
@turdofanerd. I'm sorry, I can't say much. You are awesome! Your style is very cool and your support is very, very strong. Thanks for everything!
@blakesoul16. My darling, you're adorable. And so is your art. Please keep it up! I really like your art a lot
@gia-d. This is when I want to apologize. I remember what you said about being able to text you anytime, but, uh. I'm just embarrassed to do it. And I want to apologize for that.
You're amazing. Very nice to talk to, and... I truly love your art.
@raven8224. Ooh, I couldn't forget you. Do you know how cool you are? You're so cool! Just-- Wow.
@la-sera. Honestly, I've been thinking about this for a long time. But... I'm truly glad I found out about you. I am truly grateful to the Goddesses that you exist. Your artwork is magical. You are an incredible person yourself! Thank you. For everything.
You have all become incredibly important rays of light in my life. I didn't think, coming into July, that I would have even one friend..... Thank you all!
I apologize that the post came out a bit rambling..... It was a little difficult to put my thoughts and words together
But remember, I love everyone. Absolutely everyone. You are all beautiful and hold a special place in my heart. I love you all so much.
Peace, everyone!
Bye.

THE GHOSTIES ARE GHOSTING!! 👻 Welcome, our first set of ghosts!! Like the previous post, I’ll start from left to right!!
Ludwig Beilschmidt / The Protector: Ludwig Beilschmidt died as a resistance leader. Devoted to the greater good, he took his last breath defending those who couldn’t defend themselves. Shot through his eye, Ludwig was left to die and rot. And that, his body did. When Ludwig came to, he was confused, lost. No matter how hard he tried to leave the building he woke up in, it was as if an invisible force kept him from moving forward. He knew time was progressing, but he couldn’t feel its effects, just watching as the building around him was reclaimed by the elements. The occasional group of teenagers would break in, mess around and disrupt the space, and there was nothing Ludwig could do. He was certain he was damned to an eternity of solitude… until he met him. Sacred Item-> Dog tags! 🛡️
Francis Bonnefoy / The Beloved: Francis Bonnefoy had the world at his disposal. He could go anywhere, do anything, be anyone. He was a nobleman, of course he could do all these things! But, eventually, death would find him. In a series of revolts, Francis found himself to be a target because of his status and wealth. There was no running, no fighting, it was millions against one. He was arranged to die by guillotine after being imprisoned. The fateful day came and all Francis could do was smile serenely as the blade met his neck. After all, so many people had shown up to watch, just for him! Francis reawakened in an antique store, though he wasn’t aware that’s what it was called at the time, and his eyes locked onto the most peculiar sight. That man… He certainly needed better clothes! Sacred Item-> Ring! 💎
Elise “Lili” Vogel / The Resilient: Lili was the brightest young girl one would ever meet. Though she didn’t come from much, her family was full of love. She was the youngest child, having an older brother. And though she was adopted, she was loved no differently from the rest of her family. The peasant girl did her duties with a gentle smile. Being so devoted to her family, Lili withheld the fact that she had started feeling under the weather until it was too late. It started with fevers and chills, progressed into coughing up blood, and then her fingers started to turn in color. Despite the plague she had contracted, Lili lived everyday with that same gentle smile. Not once did she fear death, and when it was her time to go, she was surrounded by her parents and the best older brother she could’ve asked for. Sacred Item-> Doll! 🕊️
Biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii-
“Big Brothers! I know I shouldn’t interfere…! But can I come on the next adventure? B…ig…brothers…?”

OPLA fan cast polls - Marianne/Miss Goldenweek prelims
Tumblr media
There will only be 1 winner, so choose wisely.
Propaganda under the cut.
Charlie Townsend: [Submitted without propaganda]
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons: She’s an American actress who played Lily on Modern Family. She’s also 16, which is the exact same age as Ms. Goldenweek. Put a paintbrush in her hand, give her in braids and a silly outfit, and I believe she could pull off an amazing Goldenweek.
Jenna Vogeler: [Submitted without propaganada]

Day 18. What would you like to see less of in adaptations?
Obviously, less of Siegfried being portrayed as a Perfect Spotless Hero. Also, fewer adaptations set in the 5th century (they can be great, but I am tired of them) with Hagen being the Last Pillar of the Old Faith. With Hebbel, it was fun, but now it's gotten old and really, really trite. And finally, I hate it when Gibichung siblings start plotting against each other (aside from Kriemhild’s revenge plot, of course). I’m fine with them being compared and contrasted or having disagreements—but ultimately, they should stick together and stand up for each other, because for me, Burgundians standing up for each other is the whole point of the story! That said, every rule can have exceptions, and Lili Vogel’s version is one of them. She is not trying to make Gunther’s life easier, and his relationship with his siblings is… complicated. But it makes perfect sense in-universe, and moreover, as @haljathefangirlcat put it, “this book is so adorable that it can do whatever it wants” <3

This poll will only last one day because it's not an official poll. I didn't take every character to be entered against a CPC character, only those with more than 50/60% less votes than their adversaries, because with that kind of different it's obvious it was helped by their fame/popularity, not their relevance.
The four with the most votes will proceed to the next round.

How have your oc,s changed
Physically Pickle hasn't really changed, but her story and personality grew over time as she graduated from cute character I doodle to main muse :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lily Vogel is my oldest OC who is hasn't muted and merged into something else. She started as an edgy, angsty apocalypse survivor with raccoon stripes in her hair for some reason and now has settled down as a mechanic/inventor in small settlement.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An interesting case are my brothers Chuck and Axel. They both originate from the same 'Axel' character but I thought that kid had way too many issues on his own and brothers made for a better storyline. Chuck got the anger and gender stuff, Axel got the alcoholism and self esteem issues.

Day 15
Favorite adaptation
Fritz Lang’s movie adaptation from 1924 is definitely a cinematic masterpiece and has some genuinely tragic moments (I’ve rewatched it recently and hadn’t remembered before how tragic Giselher’s death is). I also have a special place in my heart for the movie adaption by Harald Reinl from 1966/67 since I watched it as a teenager.
Two absolute favourite works of mine are not retellings of the Nibelungenlied, but function as prequel stories: Stephen Grundy’s ‘Attila’s Treasure’ and the ‘König von Burgund’ trilogy by Lili Vogel. Both are about Hagen’s time as a hostage at Etzel/Attila’s court, which I especially enjoy as a big Hagen fan. Grundy’s story takes place in the historical setting of the 5th century and focuses a lot on Hagen’s/Hagan’s spiritual side (his Hagan is quite different to the NL!Hagen). Vogel’s trilogy is a coming-of-age story of her two protagonists Gunther and Hagen and takes place in the historical setting of the 12th century. One of the major themes is Hagen’s loyalty to Gunther and his desire to serve him as his vassal.
