right away, mr. harrington.
summary: an illicit affair with your boss steve harrington can only end one way, heartbreak. c/w: so steve is like 39 in this and reader is around 24, i didn't wanna write r any younger but also think this age gap is still a bit dodge. there's also rough sex and like he's a bit of an asshole honestly. modern! au. also i guess plussize!reader but it's like a sentence of description so i don't wanna tag it as that. so i actually LOVED writing this like a lot so i hope you enjoy <3
âno, i really am going to end it this time, tomorrow in fact,â you take a sip from the wine glass, looking up at your roommate.
âdo what you want darling, i know if a man like that was interested in me, iâd do the same damn thing,â emma snorts, unscrewing the wine lid and filling both of your glasses.
âi know, but i feel bad.. nancy is a lovely woman, itâs not fair,â you respond. the thing is, at first it was just mindless, admittedly amazing, sex but the more time youâd spent with him, the more youâd begun actually having feelings for him.
it hurt more because nancy really was a nice person, sheâd always bake little treats for the office, bringing them in with a smile. and she was always polite to you, complimenting your new shoes and your nice new skirt that steve had actually bought you.
it was strange really, because you and nancy couldnât have been more different. you were more.. round. you had thick thighs, wide hips and carried a lilâ bit of extra weight around your stomach. whereas she was petite and slender. you were loud mouthed and cocky, whilst she seemed much more reserved and honestly a little shy.
âshe probably knows, donât all big bosses fuck their assistants?â she chortles.
âiâm not his assistant, iâm in admin,â you sarcastically quip back. realistically you were a glorified receptionist, but telling people that you worked in admin for the harrington law firm made you look miles better.
âof course, pardon me for the mistake,â she raises her eyebrow.
you hadnât meant to start an affair with steve, really. youâd stayed late at the office one night, trying to finish the monthly report before monday, steve was in his office tapping away at his computer, quite frankly you hadnât even noticed.
you were swearing under your breath trying to get the photocopier to cooperate when he swings his office door open, âgiving yaâ trouble?â
âshit!â you clutch your chest, realising who youâd just sworn at, âoh my god, sorry! i didnât realise you were still here!â
he chuckles moving to stand next to you, he clicks one of the buttons and it clunks and starts printing.
âeasy, the trick is to not get angry at it and itâll listen,â he smiles down at you. you notice how heâd loosened his tie, his hair messy from running his hands through it.
âahh, shouldâve known.. thank you,â you grin back, you rarely saw your boss, he was far too busy to socialise with his workers.
âuhh..â he sighs, slapping his forehead sarcastically, âforgive me, what was your name?â
you giggle, ây/n, iâm in admin,â gosh youâd never noticed just how attractive mr. harrington really was.
âright right, i remember now.. how come youâre still here?â his arm brushes against yours making your whole body shiver.
âi had to get this stupid report done before monday, thought iâd better stay.â
âhard worker.. i like it, is it finished?â
âit is now, thanks to you,â you grin, collecting the papers from the machine.
âcome and join me for a drink in my office, celebrate your hard work?â he touches your arm briefly.
âahh i shouldnât.. i still need to staple them and-,â
âi have a stapler in my office,â raising his eyebrows.
âokay..â you concede, following him into his office.
heâd only had some very expensive whisky but you put up with the burn and sat and drank it with him for hours.
and then somehow youâre on the edge of his desk, legs wrapped around his waist as he pounds into you, hands gripping onto the fat of your hips.
you limped out of the office, arriving home in the early hours of the morning, much later than youâd intended.
from that night on, you and steve had started the affair. it began with late nights in his office, slowly moving to secret meetings at hotels and then now, staying at his house when nancy was away communicating through the second phone heâd bought especially for you.
the day after the not so helpful conversation with emma, you strut into the office, prepared to end things once and for all.
you were wearing the tiny black skirt heâd bought for you, perhaps subconsciously, knowing that heâd be salivating as soon as you walked into his office.
itâs nearly the end of the day before you get the guts to walk in there, lightly wrapping your knuckles on his door.
thereâs an exaggerated gag from behind you, you spin to see one of the guys from accounts jerking his hand in a mock blowjob. you roll your eyes, it wasnât a secret that people in the office were speculating about you. noticing the trips to his office and how youâd both mysteriously appeared from the bathroom at the christmas party, hair messed up and a trace of red lipstick on his collar.
it was all the more annoying because steve actually wasnât doing anything for you at work. youâd explicitly told him to keep it all seperate. you didnât want promotions handed to you. any and everything youâd earned was all you.
âcome in,â he calls and you oblige, shutting the door firmly behind you.
he snaps the lid of his laptop shut, looking up at you and then down to the short skirt, his signature smirk creeping to his face.
âitâs you,â he breathes, pushing his chair back from his desk and standing.
âwhatâre you hiding? donât tell me youâre having an affair?â you feign shock, walking over to his desk. you hated the effect he had on you, before youâd come in here you were so ready to shut him down and now you were crumbling at the sight of him.
âahh, you caught me,â he holds his hands up as you walk over to him.
âwell i hope sheâs not prettier than me,â you pout, his hands resting on your waist, pulling you into him.
âthatâd be a tough one,â he smirks.
you bite your lip, your cheeks flushing with heat at his words, âreally, what are you hiding?â
âwell.. it was supposed to be a surprise buut since youâre hereâŚâ he pulls away, lifting the laptop screen to show the conformation screen for a very, very fancy hotel.
you lean in to look at the screen, âwhat..? whatâs that for?â
âfor this weekend, nancyâs away at some conference until monday so iâm all yours,â he turns to you, smiling.
âoh.. okay,â you try not to sound unappreciative but he had just knocked your plans right off course. this wasnât helping you in trying to convince yourself you werenât hopelessly in love with your married boss.
âoh.. not a good idea then,â he sits back on the chair, a slight frown on his face.
âno.. no, itâs great, i just didnât expect it at all,â you wrap your arms around his neck, perching on his lap.
how could you ever end things with him? heâs the first man to ever think about you so deeply and sincerely. even if it was only when nancy was away.
âreally? you didnât seem too happy..â his arms wrap around your waist, the frown still apparent on his face.
âi am, really steve, thank you,â planting a small kiss to his nose before you press your forehead to his.
he finally smiles, âyou deserve it.. weâre going tonight, iâll pick you up at seven, pack for the whole weekend weâre back sunday night.â
âokay, exciting.. are we-,â youâre cut off by a knock at his door, jumping up from his lap and practically sprinting to the other side of the desk.
he clears his throat, spinning to sit correctly at his desk, âcome in.â
carol, his very lovely but elderly assistant walks into the room. you were sure heâd only hired her to keep nancy off his trail.
âiâll get on that right away mr. harrington,â you smile at him and use the interruption to slip out of the room.
you sit back at your desk, a collection of eager eyes on you.
you pull out your phone to text emma,
âiâll be back sometime sunday lolâ
she pings back almost immediately,
âdidnât go well then?â
âof course notâ
âi think iâm actually in love with him em.. this is not goodâ
you place your phone back on your desk, attempting to get back to work.
-
the hotel room is huge.
decked head to toe with candles and bouquets of flowers.
âoh my god,â you drop your bag onto the velvet chair, taking in the magnificent room.
âyour favourites,â he nods over to the vases full of sunflowers adorning the sides.
âoh, thank you.. thank you,â you snake your arms around his neck, kissing his lips.
he walks you backwards towards the bed, your knees buckling as they hit the edge and you fall back onto the soft mattress, his body now on top of yours.
his hands wander down to your thighs, creeping up your skirt.
you take his bottom lip between your teeth as his thumb begins to circle your clit above your underwear.
quickly letting go as he presses harder, causing you to moan into his mouth. his fingers hook onto the lacy hem of your panties, yanking them down to your thighs.
âmmm, i love these ones,â he looks down between your bodies, his thumb returning to its previous position, circling faster.
âfuck steve,â your eyes squeeze shut at the feeling of his fingers sliding into you.
âso wet for me already, baby,â he growls, nipping at your neck.
you moan in response, tugging at his blazer hinting for him to remove it.
your stomach tightens, his fingers dangerously close to sending you over the edge. he can tell as the grip on his arm tightens, your chest heaving up and down.
âyeah? you gonna cum for me baby,â he groans, eyes firmly on you as you cry out at your orgasm. legs shaking as steve removes his fingers, smirking down at you.
he was, genuinely, the first man to care about making you cum before he did. not only that, but he was so good at it. he was proud of the fact that he could have you writhing underneath him in five minutes.
âjesus,â you pant, looking up at him.
ânot sure he was responsible for that one, darling,â he retorts, going to stand from the bed.
you grab his hand, taking the two fingers that had just been inside of you and wrapping your lips around them, looking at him through your eyelashes.
he inhales sharply, âyou drive me crazy..â his thumb strokes your cheek, before sliding his fingers out, a low moan rumbling from his throat.
âcâmon.. what about you, mr. harrington? i wanna make you feel good,â you mew, lightly placing your foot on his crotch and sliding it down ever so slowly.
you can hear his breath hitch in his throat, âwe have dinner in an hour..â
âiâll be quick.. promise,â you flip onto your knees, crawling to the edge of the bed. unbuckling his belt and sliding his tailored pants down. he shrugs his blazer off, now stood in his tight, white button-up shirt. it fit perfectly, highlighting his defined biceps.
âso hard for me already?â you run your hand over his bulge, mocking his words from earlier.
âbaby please, iâm begging you..â he pants, his hand running through his hair.
âhmmm, i like the sound of that,â you tug his boxer shorts down, his erection springing up, tip already leaking pre-cum.
the size of him still genuinely shocked you. the first few times you fucked, you had to get accustomed to his length, unsure if it was going to tear you in two.
you spit into your hand and take his cock into your grasp, pumping your hand up and down. his knees almost giving way as you fasten the pace.
âfucking hell,â he grunts, his long fingers curling into your hair.
you crawl forward, taking his cock into your mouth, beginning to bob your head up and down.
low moans fall from his lips as he twists your hair into a make-shift ponytail, yanking on it as his dick hits the back of your throat.
your hands grab onto his hips as he begins to thrust into your mouth, gagging at the feeling of his cock repeatedly slamming your throat.
you look up at him, his dark eyes already staring down at you. the eye contact makes him fall apart, your name tumbling from his lips as you can feel his cock twitch in your throat.
he gives one last thrust as he cums into your mouth, âholy fuck,â he says breathlessly, pulling away from you.
you swallow the liquid and wipe your mouth, sitting back on the bed.
âi donât think i can go to dinner like this,â you laugh, your mascara now smudged and the nude lipstick youâd chosen now anywhere but your lips.
âyou look perfect to me,â he leans down, kissing your swollen lips, âwe do actually have to go though.â
-
you wake up to an empty bed and hushed arguing in the next room.
âi told you.. well i can't.. i don't think you're listening..â you can only hear snippets of the conversation but you can tell steve is annoyed.
5:24am
the clock reads and you sigh, it could be one of two things: nancy or work, honestly the thought of either was annoying.
he climbs back into bed, almost an hour later, wrapping his arm around your waist and pressing himself against your back.
âwho was that?â you mumble, voice full of sleep.
âoh, itâs just work.. needed me to sign off on some things,â he says, hiding his face in your neck.
âyou sounded angry,â you note.
he combs your hair with his fingers, exposing the back of your neck and planting light kisses to the skin.
âi was, itâs five am on a saturday, i donât want to be woken up because idiots canât do their job,â he mutters into your neck.
from the conversation you could hear, that was evidently not work, in fact youâd literally heard him hiss nancyâs name down the phone multiple times.
but itâs far easier to just ignore, rather than argue about why his wife was calling so early and why he was so angry about it.
âokay,â you wriggle around to face him, slinging your leg over his, intertwining them.
âitâs too early to be awake.. go back to sleep baby,â he tilts his head down to place a kiss to your forehead.
your heart skips a beat at the intimacy and youâre so nearly tempted to just blurt out that you actually think youâre in love with him. but you bite your tongue, not wanting to ruin the weekend.
-
youâre sat opposite steve in some incredibly fancy restaurant when he slides a thin box across the table.
you look at him, puzzled, âwhatâs that?â
âjust open it,â he sits back in his chair, smiling.
you take the lid off slowly revealing a stunning diamond encrusted bracelet.
'steve.. no, i can't accept this..' you slide the box back over to him.
he takes the box, carefully taking the bracelet out of it and grabbing your wrist, he clasps the bracelet and places your hand back on your lap.
you admire the glistening jewellery now adorning your wrist, 'you really didn't have to,' you beam back at him.
'but i wanted to, i'm glad you like it,' he takes a swig of wine, gazing over at you.
'thank you, i love it,' you lean across the table, placing a light kiss to his lips.
'good,' he smiles against your lips, as you sit back in your chair.
you look around the busy restaurant, 'you look like my sugar daddy, you know,' giggling.
he groans, 'god, i don't look that old, do i?'
you jut out your bottom lip sarcastically, 'ooh, i'd say.. 48.. on a good day.'
'wow.. i think i've still got the receipt for that bracelet,' he remarks.
you reach over and take his hand, 'no, you look great for your age, though i can see some greys peaking through,' you laugh.
he shakes his head in response, a slight smile on his lips. your humour was lost on him, though you'd tried to get him to understand some of your jokes and references, it was useless. he'd actually asked you to help him set up an instagram account, so he could 'be friends with you' on there.
you intertwine your fingers, 'no, you really do look great.'
'i know,' he winks and you roll your eyes at the sheer cockiness.
the waitress walks over with plates of foods, noticing his ringed finger intertwined with yours. you catch the slight frown she flashes you and drop his hand, a sudden wave of guilt flashing over you.
_
emma notices the new bit of bling straight away, gushing at your new present.
'i'm gonna assume it's not ending anytime soon then?' she asks, admiring your wrist.
you groan as your palm hits your forehead, 'i don't know.. nancy called him when we were away.. he told me it was work but i'm not stupid.. anyway, i've never heard him so angry.. it was weird,' you shake your head, looking to your roommate for advice.
'hmm.. that is weird.. maybe she found something? like the receipt to that bracelet.. i know i'd be angry as shit if i found that without the bracelet..' she suggests, finally giving letting go of your arm.
'i dunno.. he said she was away this weekend.. some conference or something, so surely she wasn't home to find it?'
'oh, well.. i actually have no explanation for that.. just ask him, what's the worst that could happen?'
you think back to the time you'd made an off-the-cuff joke about nancy's name on his phone and how he immediately went into a foul mood, 'why are you bringing her up? i'm here with you, okay? we don't need to talk about my wife.'
though, he did occasionally use you as someone to rant to about her, telling you about how loveless his marriage was, how she barely even looked at him anymore and how really he was just looking for the right time to divorce her. you knew to keep your mouth shut and just listen because as soon as you'd ask a follow-up question about her, he'd shut his mouth.
'god no.. we don't talk about her.. i'm sure it was nothing.. if it was that bad he woulda gone home, right?'
'yeah.. exactly, don't stress about it.. not with that on your wrist,' she chuckles. she didn't exactly help, only appeasing your delusions but you still appreciated her words of not-so-much wisdom nonetheless.
_
you fluff your hair up, making sure the curls sat perfectly before smoothing out your floor length gown and heading out to the taxi steve had booked you outside.
you'd attended a handful of the business dinners with steve before, the general consensus you'd gathered were that the women that accompanied these men were girlfriends, rather than wives. every single suited man sat around your table had a gorgeous, younger woman on their arm and a wedding band on their fourth finger. you included.
it was also incredibly evident that although these men had girlfriends, none of you had boyfriends.
this dinner was different, half of the team were going to be there so you and steve had to be totally unconcerned with each other. he'd booked a room for you both at the hotel after you'd pretend to try and find a cab with your colleagues.
you walk into the large hall, alongside a few of the people from the office.
you spot steve, dressed to the nines not that he ever didn't make an effort. and then you see nancy stood beside him, wearing a pale pink gown. the exact shade steve had previously convinced you not to buy as it was 'boring'.
you're slightly taken aback as she never usually attended these things, but you brush it off, sitting down where your placeholder inked your name. conveniently your seat was opposite steve at the large round table. he'd surely been responsible for the placing.
the night trundles on, many large glasses of white wine consumed. you pick up on the fact nancy is on the water, so vehemently shutting down any offers of wine.
'i love your bracelet, y/n.. it's gorgeous,' carol states taking your wrist into her hand.
'i know, my daddy bought it for me, a congratulations present,' you smile.
steve chokes on the wine in his mouth, causing a clatter of plates and cutlery as everyone's eyes land on him.
'excuse me, must've gone down the wrong hole,' he shoots you an irked look which you brush off, downing another glass of wine.
you're positively tipsy when nancy stands from the table, nudging steve to stand next to her, she clears her throat, 'steve and i wanted to make a little announcement.. we're pregnant!'
your heart drops. you'd known from the second you noticed she wasn't drinking. the fact she was even in attendance should've been a tell tale sign.
you press your lips together in a forced smile, eyes planted on nancy, rather than the massive dickhead stood next to her. you didn't hate her, how could you? she'd done nothing wrong.
you join in on the applause, even going up to congratulate her still choosing to ignore steve.
the rest of the night goes by in a blur, nancy leaves at some point or another, coming up to hug you goodbye, her kindness making your stomach turn.
your other phone buzzes at the end of the night as you stand besides your colleagues waiting for a cab. you'd intended to just hop in and go home, leaving steve on his own in the overpriced hotel room.
'where are you? there's a key under your name at the desk'
you swallow, making up some pathetic excuse to go back inside the hotel to your colleagues. they flash a few knowing looks to each other before saying goodbye as you stumble up the stone steps and into the reception.
'uhh.. y/n y/l/n.. there should be a key..?' you question the polite lady at the front desk.
she hands you a plastic keycard, 'yes, room 906.. have a nice evening,' she smiles at you.
you're on a mission to get to steve, the anger unfolding in your stomach as you press the elevator button. it dings on the ninth floor and you step out, unlocking the sixth door.
steve is stood at the desk, pouring two glasses of wine as you walk in.
he can tell instantly that you're angry, in fact you were positively furious.
'are you joking? she's fucking pregnant, steve! did you not think to let me know?' you screech, throwing your bag down and storming over to his position.
he raises his hands in defeat, 'i was going to tell you.. i promise, she just sprung it on me saying she was going to do it tonight.. i had no choice,' he's so calm with his words, you almost believe him.
'hah, get fucked.. you've known for god knows how long and not told me, you expect me to believe you?' you spit at him, jabbing a finger into his chest.
'yes, because it's the truth.. why would i ever choose to announce such news here? especially to you.. you mean much more to me than that.'
'do you seriously think this can continue? she's pregnant, for fuck's sake,' you stare daggers into him, wishing you weren't so hopelessly in love with the caramel eyes that stared back.
'why not? it wasn't a problem when she wasn't pregnant.. now you want to take the moral high ground? it's far too late for that,' his jaw is tense.
'it's different! and you know that!' you jab his chest against as his hand grabs your wrist, constraining you.
'why'd you come here then? you could've gone home, hell i'll book you a cab right now, if it's what you want,' the side of his mouth ever so curls up into a slight smirk. already knowing your answer.
'i came up here to tell you to get fucked,' ignoring his offer for a cab.
'okay, you've done that.. you're still here,' he cocks his head to the side slightly.
'get fucked.'
his lips crash onto yours, your arm snakes around his neck as you kiss him back, eyes squeezed shut.
you yank at the back of his hair, the kiss desperate and full of breathless moans as he presses you back against the desk. much like the night that had started this whole affair.
he pulls away, spinning your body round and holding onto the back of your neck, bending you over the desk.
his fingers unzip your dress, sliding it down your body as his large hands slide up your thighs, settling on your waist.
you hold your weight up on the desk, feeling his already erect cock pressing against you. he takes your wrists in his hand, practically slamming the side of your face down against the wood.
you groan in response, he unknots his tie and wraps it around your wrists and tying it in a tight knot.
he rips your panties off with such force they sting your thigh, causing you to inhale sharply.
'are you gonna take my cock? huh? you gonna be a good girl?' he puts his hand on the side of your face, pressing you down onto the desk.
you nod under his palm, 'c'mon i wanna hear your words, baby.'
'y-yes,' you manage to mumble out, he slaps his cock on your slick entrance. it pained you to say it but this was turning you on ridiculously, he was rarely this dominant with you.
'good,' he thrusts into you with no warning, grabbing onto the tie around wrists, holding them tight behind your back.
you gasp as he continues to pound into you, steve pulls your body up towards his your back flush against his chest, he growls into your ear, 'you're such a good girl.. much better when your pretty little mouth is moaning for me.'
his hand creeps around your neck, balls slapping against the back of your thighs, unintelligible moans tumble out of your lips as his pace quickens, slamming into you with his fingers squeezing your neck.
his thrusts falter as he grumbles into your ear, 'fuck,' you can feel him shudder behind you, filling you up.
steve pulls out, standing back just watching you in the precarious position.
'you're cute when you're angry but i prefer you like this, i might just have to leave you like this,' he smirks, pulling his boxers back up around his waist.
'please, untie me,' you bargain, attempting to wriggle free but it was useless.
'only because you said please,' he unties the knot, freeing your wrists as he stands right behind you.
'have you got something i can wear?' you turn to look at him, admiring his sweaty chest, heaving up and down.
'in my bag,' he grabs your arm, pulling you back to him, 'you're staying here?'
you nod, pulling away and walking over to the brown leather bag on the bag, finding a black t-shirt and a pair of his boxers, slipping them on.
he walks over to the bed, wrapping his arms around your shoulders, âi knew you would, though i will say i did enjoy your little performance earlier.â
you roll your eyes, âit wasnât a performance, iâm still angry with you.â
âhmm, thought i mightâve fucked it out of you, but clearly not,â he chuckles and you almost melt at the feeling of his chest vibrating against your back.
âiâm tired, iâve got no energy to fight with you again,â you sigh.
he leans down, kissing the back of your neck before removing his arms, âthank god for that, not sure my back would last another round like that.â
you slide into the big bed, pulling the covers around your shoulders. you really shouldâve just gone home, but the thought of having to get a cab after all of that was too much.
quite honestly, you knew this would be your last night with steve. there was no way you could continue the relationship knowing nancy was at home pregnant with his child. it wasnât necessarily the thought of her being pregnant either, but the fact that he loved her, and not you.
he climbs into bed next to you, snaking his arm around your waist and pulling you closer. you snuggle into his chest, exhaling as you lay your head on his shoulder. slowly drifting off to sleep.
-
you wake up to the sunrise, creeping in through the drawn curtains.
6:34am your phone reads.
you sigh, carefully sliding out of the bed, as to not wake the snoring steve next to you.
not intending to still be here when he awoke.
you slip on the dress youâd worn last night, over his black tee, deciding it was only fair that you also took his suit jacket, for your modesty.
taking the other phone heâd given to you and leaving it alongside the bracelet heâd most recently gifted, on the bed.
you canât help but steal a quick glance of him, the last time youâd see him in such a peaceful state.
picking up the uncomfortable heels youâd worn last night and creeping out of the hotel before he had the opportunity to sweet talk you into continuing the affair.
-
monday morning is dire in the office. you hadnât spoken to steve since friday evening. even though heâd tried. even breaking the number one rule heâd set out for you: donât use his personal number for anything.
youâd received a text in the middle of saturday morning,
âplease call me, itâs urgent.â
smart man, knowing that he could so easily play it off as some work emergency. you ignored of course. too busy sobbing into emmaâs arms to care.
you pull open the top drawer of your desk, and there lies the phone youâd left in the hotel, right next to the glimmering bracelet.
there was already a text message on the phone screen,
âcome to my office as soon as you see this.â
you choose to ignore once again, closing the drawer and continuing with the work on your screen.
what you couldnât see was steve getting agitated in his office, surely you had seen the message by now?
thereâs an hour until the end of the day when carol trundles over to your desk, âmr. harrington has requested you in his office.â
you sigh, standing from your chair and strutting over to his door. three knocks on the wood before he tells you to enter, and you do, closing the door behind you.
âwhat the fuck are you playing at?â
âwhat?â
âyou know exactly what.. you didnât get my messages?â
âno i did,â you stare at him as steps forward towards you.
âyou didnât think to reply? you left in the middle of the night, you couldâve been dead for all i knew,â he snaps.
âwell iâm not, i thought you wouldâve taken the hint and realised i donât want to speak to you,â you shuffle backwards as he gets closer.
'i don't understand, i thought we sorted this mess out at the hotel? now what? you don't want to do this anymore?' he tilts his head slightly, staring at you.
'yes, exactly that,' you nod, crossing your arms over your chest.
'well.. that's your choice, but i am telling you now that nothing between us will change.. there's no reason to end this now,' he moves closer, now only mere inches away from you.
'i can't steve, i won't do it anymore..' a tear slides down your cheek, quick to wipe it away, 'you know.. very well that i love you.. i can't watch you have a kid with her while i feel like this,' you're crying now, attempting to speak through the sobs.
'you know how i feel about you..' he cups your face in his hands, but you pull back, jerking your face away.
'say it then.'
'i- wel..' he fumbles over himself, unable to speak the words you were so desperate to hear.
you can't help but smile, despite your bottom lip quivering, a sob threatening to erupt.
'look.. i- it's just difficult-,' he stammers.
you walk over to the door, back facing him, as he grits his teeth, irritated at how quickly you were willing to leave this.
'i'll.. uh, i'll get you transferred to our brooklyn office.. i think you'll be very happy there.'
you scoff and walk out of his office for the last time, slamming the door behind you. you can feel the collective stare from the office as you walk to the bathroom, tears streaming down your cheeks.
and you truly realise, girls like you werenât ever supposed to be like nancy. you were forever going to be a girlfriend. or the other woman, not good enough for pole position but always, always good enough to hang off of their arm as eye candy. steve could move you to another office, out of sight out of mind, right?
but another you would come along just as fast as you had, stealing pathetic glances across the office, sly touches in the staff room, the gifts and then itâd all get too much. wives get suspicious and sheâd be shipped off just as quick as you were.
you're sat in a cubicle crying quietly when you can hear the bathroom door open.
'y/n..?' there's a light knock to the door, 'can i come in?' you click the lock, allowing her to come in.
it's carol, steve's sweet little assistant walks in and bends down to your level.
you furrow your brows in confusion but she looks softly back at you, a slight frown on her face.
'i don't know... exactly.. what's been going on.. but, i do know that you are far too good for that man, men like him.. they get off on ruining young girls,' she wipes your cheek with her thumb, 'but you.. you're not going to let him ruin you, okay?'
you sniffle, looking up at her with a small smile, 'okay..'
'you walk out of here with your head held high and you forget all about him,' she puts her hands on your shoulders, rubbing slightly.
what you didn't know was that you weren't the first young girl to leave this office because of him and you most certainly wouldn't be the last. she'd bore witness to girls full of ambition joining the office to end up with a head crammed with dreams about their relationship with steve. only to end up the exact same way as you, hopelessly in love with a married man.

ceo!ryujin x reader where reader cussing her out when ryujin stands behind readers back
i love your works, youâre one of my fav authors! sorry for my eng itâs not my native lang lol
thank u so much <3!!! your English is amazing :)
Being the secretary for the richest CEO in the country had its perks, you were paid the best out of all her employees, free lunches, and got to ride in her fancy cars. But the cons outweighed those pros, she wanted you around constantly, and the hours you worked were unconventional and unforgiving.
You had to listen to her yell and fire anyone who made the smallest mistakes and you were victim to that as well. Being a minute late caused a ten-minute-long rant on how she needed you with her and you would never get another job like this. She was right but you didn't want to hear it from her.
You didn't even interview for the job, it was the right place right time situation, bumping into her as she fired her previous secretary and hiring you on the spot.
You got long lunches though, getting to sit outside her office where you were usually sat in all day. Sitting on the edge of Yeji's desk as the both of you ate, Yeji caught up on reports she missed.
You thought Ryujin was still out for lunch, she had only left a few minutes ago and you had a good hour before you were needed. So you let it all out to Yeji, the two of you being the only other people in the office as the rest went out to eat.
"She's insane Yeji, you guys are lucky. I have to do everything for her, she even makes me pick out clothes for whoever she's fucking." You ranted, pulling out your phone and showing her the screenshots of the skimpy dresses you had selected for her to buy. Yeji laughed, barely looking up from her computer screen as she typed.
"But the pay is insane, I wouldn't mind it honestly," she mumbled as she shoved another salad leaf into her mouth, you rolled your eyes at her, she had no idea how bad Ryujin was.
"I don't even have time to spend it, I'm with her 24/7 and when I get time to myself she's calling and texting me," you mumbled, leaning over to place your empty plate onto Yeji's desk. Yeji looked up at the clanging noise of your plate to judge you but her eyes widened.
You didn't get it, so you looked behind you only to see Ryujin stood not a meter from you. Towering over you as her face wore a blank expression.
"Miss Shin! Wh-when did you get back?" you stood, straightening your skirt that had worked its way up your thighs.
"I didn't leave, I had lunch delivered to my office." Her voice was low, and you knew that meant nothing good, she was going to fire you, and you were sure of it.
"Speaking of my office, in there now," she threatened, watching as you hurried past her to the end of the long office and into her office, her eyes drifting back to Yeji who looked like she saw a ghost before turning and making her way to the office.
You took a seat in the expensive chairs she made you get with the company card, it took two weeks for her to decide she wanted these ones specifically.
She took a seat, and you fixed yourself to sit straighter as she looked across at you.
"So, the job's really that bad?" she questioned and you were frozen you didn't know what to do, you were going to lose your job and you couldn't save it.
"I-I'm so sorry M-Miss Shin, I didn't mean t-to, I really love the job I am just stressed," you tried to explain but the stutter really didn't help prove your point, just showed your nerves and she loved it.
"I'm not going to fire you," she smirked, watching as your face changed into one of confusion instead of fear, opening your mouth to question her but she beat you to it.
"I got you to choose those dresses for yourself, but clearly you didn't get the message did you." she stood up, moving around the desk to stand in front of you and placing a hand under your chin to get you to meet her gaze.
"I-I don't understand Miss," you whispered out as she stroked her thumb over your lower lip.
"I'm taking you out tonight, go home now, those dresses will have arrived and put one on, I'll pick you up at seven. Go," she sat back down and gestured for you to leave and you did, closing the door behind you and making your way past Yeji who had no idea what was going on.

Hello new friend! Could I please request a scenario for Amai Mask with an s/o who had been turned into a kinda grotesque monster, and he was on her way to save her, but she didn't make it in time? The person who captured reader was out to ruin Amai, so The only way to transform her back, is to announce at his next concert (a huge one) that he was dating her, kiss her in front of everybody, and wait 24 hours. That works, but does he do it? Thank you!
Very interesting! I tried to make this as in character as possible lol?! Amai Mask is kind of a grey character for me, but I happen to believe him to be hiding dark depths. (In the manga he can be very ruthless and vain so ahh I felt very sorry for his monster s/o for a hot minuteâŚ)
So TBH: since -I- personally donât trust this guy with the safety of any monster, regardless if itâs his s/o or not-- and because you gave me the option of âdoes he do it?â Weeellll! Read on and find out how he-- and the reader! Handles it!
Warnings: Dark themes, unhealthy relationships(?), inevitable break up.
Word Count: 1766
âTell me where (Name) is before I slaughter you bothââ
The woman in question flinched, her eyes watering and spilling over onto pallid grey cheeks.
The scientist holding her shackles reared his head back and belted out a cruel, shrieking cackle. The sound bounced around the cavernous lab. The mixture he had poured over (Name) sloshed in large beaker he held in a gloved hand, and he gestured with it almost drunkenly.
âWhy Amai MaskâSheâs right here!!â With a rough shove, her binds were released, and (Name) fell to the floor with a cry. Even in this cruel form, all hard and shell like in places, the fall hurt. A sob tore from her lips as her hot tears rained on the ground.
Even monsters can cryâŚ(Name) thought as she sniffled and picked herself up. In a burst of hope, she dared to meet Amaiâs gazeâShe hoped to see a protective glare, or worried shock.
âŚInstead there was an ominous shadow cutting across his features, and his eyes were burning bright.
Not from recognition, not from loveâAll (Name) could see was hate.
His beautifully clenched jaw, his sculpted brows raised in apathy... (Name) had never seen this dark side of him directed AT her before. It was almost unthinkable to see him react so viciously.
The veins in her loverâs face were pulsing. It was a dangerous signal that every fiber of his being was flexing in white hot anger. She had cooed over it once before when he had dispatched a monster on one of their first dates, but not now.
He snapped his head to the side, making his flawless hair lay just so across his forehead to hide it. She assumed he would have threaded a hand through his perfect blue locks if both palms werenât dripping with blood.
Iâve never seen him this angryâŚ
Doesnât he know itâs me?!
His eyes were growing hazy as he stared at (Name)âhis irises doubled as they flickered at high speeds over her form.
He was judging her tears as weakness and analyzing her every flinch for signs of retaliation. There was not a hint of recognition within them, and she couldnât help but whimper and hide her face in her heavily clawed hands.
The scientist laughed again, âYou really donât know!! How patheâhiii!!" Their words were cut short as Amai released a low snarl.
Bloodlust flooded the room as if a dam had given way. The intent to kill was suddenly so thick in the air the scientist choked on his word and screamed instead.
The situation was becoming too stressful for (Name) to overcome. Her bulky shoulders hitched as heaving sobs wracked her body. Her tears were murky and discolored like mudâ
Amai Mask swiped his hands low, perfectly dispelling the gore on them. The impact of the splash laid holes in the ground as if it had been sprayed with acid.
âIâd be careful if I were youâŚI donât have to make your death quick, villain!â
He stepped closer, and something in (Name) flashed in bright neon lights: Danger! Keep away!
âTell. Me. Where. (Name). Is!!â
(Name) shivered as a mirage of her lover flickered behind her.
As she turned in shock, the scientist was kicking his legs in the air. His voice squawking with the effort to keep his throat protected while Amai lifted him by his tie and collar..
âT-ThereâSheâSHEâS RIGHT THERE!!â He pointed with both hands at (Name), and the solution he held crashed to the floor. The concoction was so strong it transmuted even the concrete into a monstrous shape.
Amaiâs golden eyes peered down, before he slowly turned to face (Name) again. The scientist swung and scrabbled to lift himself up in Amai Maskâs iron grip.
Her loverâs face was devoid of emotion. âYou really expect me to believe that you turned her into this monster?â
His voice was so coldâŚIf her form hadnât been changed, she would have never doubted his resolve to rescue her.
But nowâŚ
Doubt was thick and rotten in her stomach as she looked down at her body. She didnât even recognize herself as she glanced down at her oozing and crusty hands and feet. Her clothes were shredded, but present. Surely, he could see the evidence of her transformation.
Her only other saving grace against Amai Maskâs brutal furyâŚWas that her voice was unchanged.
âLoveâŚ.Love, itâs me, (Name)! I-Iâm sorry I look like this!--â
His eyes glinted red as he bared his teeth, âDonât try to save your pitiful life with lies!!!â
He raised the scientist up, his arm fully extended and clenching hard, âIâm tired of your gamesââ He raised his other fist and curled it into a fist, threatening a killing blow.
The scientist knew the jig was up.
âN-nonono! If you want to turn her back! Itâs simple! J-just hold a concert in my honorâI MEAN!â They squeaked as Amai squeezed, âKiss your monster lover in front of a crowd and Iâll turn them backââ With sweat dripping down his forehead and cheeks, he managed a small impish smile.
âNo.â
Both (Name) and the scientist frozeâŚ
ââŚW-what?â The scientistâs eyes bulged behind foggy glasses, âD-donât you want them to return to normal?!â
âIâm going to kill you now.â
âNo! NO PLEASEâ"
Amai Mask hushed him and set the scientist down with a scoff. He leveled them with stare of pure indifference.
âThereâs one thing you must understand first since youâre humanâŚâ
â--As a hero, I will not buckle under the threat of others.â
The grip Amai had on the scientist crunched in a sickening sound. His musical voice carried over the sudden rush of desperate screams.
âAs an idol, I wonât ruin my reputation for such a bold-faced lie.â
With a move so fast (Name) couldnât comprehend, Amai Mask threw the scientist to splatter against the furthest wall. Computers shattered and buzzed with electricity. The foundations shook, the lights flickered, and dust rained from the ceiling in a sudden choking cloud.
Amai didnât even flinch and instead brushed off his shoulders. He barely reacted at the sound of (Name)âs breaths turning shallow in her throat. He didnât twitch when (Name)âs hazy vision made her sway in place.
He seemed to watch her curiously before he finally decided to face her. His hands slipped into his designer jean pockets as he hummed and blinked as if bored.
To have that gaze directed at herâŚIt paralyzed (Name) from the neck down. Growths of all kinds dotted her form, and they shivered and folded back like a catâs ears in response.  Even as she gulped and cowered, her display of surrender was clear.
âŚBut she knew--!!
Amai Mask hated monsters. Wanted them all dead--
âThey must not live. They are evil.â She had heard those words before, and they were ringing in her skull like a siren.
âI-Itâs me!! I can prove it!!â She sniffled and pressed a sincere hand against her chest.
âGo on, then.â He replied coolly.
Biting her lip with sharp teeth she panted, âI-I know you were stressed out about your movie premiere! You told me in the green room before your interviewâT-that you werenât sure if theâthe film would surpass your one from last year.â
He stepped closer, his heels clacking on the ground.
She buckled deeper into herself, cradling her head in her hands.
âYou liked the strawberry mango smoothie I got you on our first dateââ her voice warbled at the memories.
âYou ate it for me even though you said you were dieting!â
(Name) shook her head hopelessly, âAmai, there has to be an antidote somewhere. Something that can change me back!!â
Before she knew it, he had closed the distance. The sight of his shoes tapping impatiently just before her knees turned her blood to ice. Wincing in on herself, she heard the slight gentle jingle of his many bracelets as he squatted.
âNo, please, AmaiâŚâ She pleaded.
She didnât want to raise her faceânot if she had to meet her doom at the hands of her love, but one of his fingers dared to tap at one of the growths on her chin.
Shivering and crying, she squeezed her eyes shut and lifted her head.
â(Name), if thatâs really you, then tell me what I prioritize most as a heroâŚâ
The words formed unbidden in her throat, âYouâYou have to be beautiful, strong, and skillfulâŚalways.â
He paused for a long moment, before sighing.
âCorrect.â
He pressed his hands against his knees and stood smoothly. He didnât offer her his handkerchief as he usually would, nor did he lend a hand to help her stand. His attitude was distant as he reached into his jacket and flipped open his cellphone.
He barely looked at her as he dialed a number.
âIâll call the association. Weâll get some scientists to try and create an antidote if one canât be found around hereâŚâ Then as if composing himself, he closed his eyes and nodded to (Name), as if she were a person he had bumped shoulders with on the street.
âIâm sorry this happened to you, (Name). For not being able to save you, Iâve gone against my own code of excellence...â He placed a hand on his chest, before turning away again.
(Name) blinked, speechless, as Amai walked away and began ordering the association at the other end into action. He walked and walkedâŚ
He carried on right out of the room.
Unsure of how to proceed, (Name) sat there shivering until a team of H.A. scientists arrived in contamination suits. The lab was swept, (Name) was put into immediate care, and Amai kept his distanceâ
No, he kept busy, is what he told the news outlets regarding (Name)âs disappearance.
âShe has fallen ill, unfortunately. Please pray for her good health.â
His smile was, as usual, perfect in every way as he glittered on the tv in (Name)âs private roomâŚShe hadnât seen him in person since his âheroic rescue.â But then again, she didnât want to.
The growths were going away, slowly but surely. Her skin was returning to its normal pallor, the shells and carapace fell away to reveal her hair, but she had an awful feeling thatâs all Amai Mask would see if he looked at her even now. She had no idea what to believe was real about that man anymore.
(Name) was almost glad he chose to stay away. It would make breaking up a hell of a lot easier.

Forget Me Not Jim Mason x Reader 50 First Dates AU Pt 2
@michael-langdon-appreciation
Y/N couldnât look away.
The blue eyes were part of it-the only thing familiar on Jim. Even they seemed slightly different, though, as sheâd never seen him stare back at her with quite that expression before.
The one that said he was a split second away from swooping in to protect her. Which she might have liked the idea of in principle, but right now, no way.
After two months of having people walk on eggshells around her, she did not need another babysitter. Especially not Jim. Her own big brothers were more than enough of a pain in the patootie. Having the guy who turned her insides to sexual jelly acting all sympathetic and concerned-
Nope.
She wanted him looking at her with a grown-up expression, not as if she were delicate china. Even if currently she was concentrating very hard to stay vertical and not dash back to the bathroom.
Stupid stomach flu.
Another wave of dizziness struck. "Jim-this is fun and all, but I need to call it a night.â Â Jim blinked before straightening, the entire solid package of male shifting awkwardly toward the door. Like he was hesitating between reaching for her or following her request.
She slipped past him and caught the doorknob, swinging the door open so she could use the solid frame as an anchor to keep herself vertical.
"Okay. I'll go." He paused. "You need anything?"
Y/N clutched the door harder. "Twenty-four hours' shuteye, but thanks for asking." Jim paced forward reluctantly. "I hope youâre feeling better soon."
She lasted until he was in his truck before she locked the door and raced for the bathroom. Classy. Elegant. Way to impress the guy. She couldnât muster the strength to feel embarrassed. Crawling into bed after she'd rinsed her mouth was the only thing on her mind.
Although the feverish dreams she had that night of Jim Mason doing dirty things to her were a lovely distraction.
Two mornings later the flu was still hanging on, though the nausea was no longer a 24/7 thing. With the fresh taste of toothpaste lingering on her tongue, Y/N strolled into her living room.
Medina had taken up residence on the couch, feet propped on the coffee table. "Sick again?" she asked.
"Duh." Y/N lowered herself gingerly into a chair. "You're the master of the obvious today. Stupid flu bug will not let go of me."
A pale pink box flew across the room, and Y/N caught it instinctively.
"If Iâm the Queen of obvious, then youâre my lady in waiting. Flu, shmuu."
She twisted the box toward her, reading out loud. "First Hint. The early pregnancy detection- Hokey spit.Medina."
"If the morning sickness fits ..."
Protests at this point were futile, but there were other more important issues. "Please tell me you didnât buy this at the local Safeway."
"You think I'm stupid?" Medina folded her arms across her chest. "I was in CVS Pharmacy yesterday. No one we know anywhere around, and yes, I looked. Now go pee on the stick so I can tell you I told you so."
The whole idea was stupid.
Impossible.
But...
The twinge of doubt at the back of her brain was enough to tip Y/N into caving. "Stay here,â she ordered. "I don't need supervision."
Her friend had already opened the box and pulled out what looked like a small stir stick. She held it forward. "Have a ball." Medina retreated enough to give Y/N a momentâs privacy, but she had to admit it was kind of nice to have her there as they stared at the stick lying on the counter.
"If that thing let off a bang about now, I bet we'd both scream loud enough they'd hear us in Winterfell,â Medina quipped.
Y/N looked away for a moment to brace herself. If it was positive, what then?
Pregnant.
On top of everything else?
"How could I be pregnant, Medina?"
Medina held the stick in the air, the two pink positive lines clear and bold. Undeniable.
"Fuck." Y/N leaned on the bathroom door, working to calm her breathing. "Okay, I can deal with this. It's not the end of the world. It's ..." Bursting into tears was the last thing sheâd intended, but it happened. A moment later she was being supported by Medinaâs firm hug. Petted and coddled all over again like her brothers had been doing for the past two months, but this time she wanted the pampering. At least for a few minutes.
When she pulled herself together, Medina handed her a fresh wad of tissue to replace the set she'd ravaged. Y/N wiped up the last of her tears. "Thanks for being a brat and bringing me the test."
They shuffled awkwardly for a moment before Medina sighed. "Not much use hanging out here unless you want me to try to break into your passwords on the computer again."
"Thatâs not important right now. I have other things to worry about." Y/N groaned. "And now that I know why I'm sick, I guess I'll find some ways to feel better."
"Rest. More vitamins." Medina nodded. "I'll do some research."
One great big secret that was only going to get bigger. Literally bigger. Y/N wandered into the kitchen to make herself a cup of tea while she considered. There was a person growing inside her. She tossed a piece of bread into the toaster, staring out the window as the timer  clicked down, the noise echoing in the silent house.
A baby.
click. click. click.
It was clear. She was going to be a mom.
Now the mystery was...would there be a dad or not? That one wasn't nearly as cut and dried.
Jim stared at the house, wishing heâd done this right the first time, immediately after getting home. Six days was as long as he could wait before nearly going stir-crazy. Bubbling inside were far different emotions. Holding back was too much to ask, and he didn't want to wait any longer.
Y/N needed to know what theyâd done. What theyâd agreed to. Sheâd had time since the accident. If their relationship ended up being another issue to deal with, at least theyâd deal with it together. That didnât make him an asshole.
He knocked on the door, anxious to get started.
The woman who greeted him was still on the green side, and his heart went out to her even as his gaze took in the rounded curves under her housecoat.
"You still sick?"
She shrugged. "Feeling a bit better. What's up?"
Had to seem strange since he didn't usually drop in on her like this. Not before they'd ... "I need to talk to you."
Y/N frowned. "Something wrong with my brothers? Or at the office?"
"No, nothing. This is personal."
That only seemed to confuse her more. "Give me a second to pull on some clothes, okay?" "No, nothing. This is personal."
He shook his head. "I needed to talk to you about your accident. More specifically, the night before."
Y/N collapsed onto the couch. "This is old boring territory, Jim. I don't-"
"Humor me. I know it's boring because youâve said it a million times, but I havenât heard it."
"I was out for the night. Went home. Got my car the next morning, and went off the road into the ditch and bumped my head. You think book or movie options would sell better?"
He ignored the snark. "How did you get home from the bar?"
She opened her mouth, then closed it quickly. "Oh. You drove me. Thanks, if I didn't say it before."
Damn it.
Jim let a growl of frustration escape. âY/N, We werenât worried about our please and thank-yous when we got here that night."
Her eyes widened. "What are you talking about?"
He lowered himself beside her on the couch and slipped his hand over hers. "Something happened that night. We both wanted it, and if I hadnât gone north, we'd be together now."
Her entire body went rigid. "Together, as in how?"
Jim stroked her fingers gently, willing her to at least remember his touch. "We made love, Y/N. A bunch of times. And it was hot and amazing, and I can't wait to do it again."
The pallor of her skin brightened as twin red spots flushed her cheeks. "We...made love. After you drove me home." Her confusion was understandable, so he nodded and went on.
"I know it was shitty timing, not only because of the accident, but because I had to leave the next day. I'm so sorry I wasnât here for you. Sorry you had to deal with your accident without me around, but I intend on being here for you from now on. No matter what you need."
Y/N stomped away a few feet before twirling on him. "Okay, that wasn't nice. I'm glad you feel like one of the family, Jim, but I certainly never thought you were the type to be willing to sacrifice your entire future on a whim like this."
Somewhere their wires had gotten crossed. "I have no idea how me being a foster kid, or your family, is even involved in this discussion, or what the hell sacrificing my future means. Before I left we said we would work on being together. On spending time and getting to know each other more."
Quite honestly she grew even more confused, agitated even. She couldn't remember any of this, her mind seemed to have a road block.
"Sweet sentiment, especially when you toss in having a kid. Babies arenât something you can return to the store when they become inconvenient, Jim."
Wait. What? "Babies? What are you talking about?"
She froze with her mouth open as panic slipped into her eyes.
A pit opened in front of Jim, and he stood with one foot in midair over the unfathomable depths. He took in all the signs, lined up the data, then waited for his ability to speak to return. "Wait, are you telling me you're pregnant?"
Holy shit.
Holy fuck.
Holy crap.
Y/N took a deep breath before muttering her response. "So. That went well."
"Answer the question." Jim narrowed the gap between them. "Are you serious? You're pregnant?"
She frowned. "You sure you didn't know?"
"How could I know? Oh man, Y/N. I had no idea." Jim wasn't sure his feet would continue to hold him. It might be a cop-out, but the room was wavering. "I need to sit down." He stumbled backward and collapsed onto the couch. Y/N was pregnant. They'd had sex, she'd had an accident, and he... They. She.
Jim lifted his gaze to meet hers. "How far along are you?"
It was her turn to pause. "Oh, shit, youâre not serious, are you?"
"About what?"
Y/N dropped into the seat opposite him. She made the most hysterical face as she scratched her head. "Good grief. Okay-for the sake of discussion, letâs assume youâre telling the truth. You drove me home and we spent the night knocking boots."
"It is true."
She glared at him. "Let me talk this through without interruption, or I will kick your ass out the door."
His head was still spinning from trying to process the idea of a baby on the way. "You've gotten an attitude since I left," he observed.
"Comes from being knocked around and knocked up." She stared at the ceiling before leaning forward and asking very earnestly. "Now if we did the horizontal mambo, was there a reason why I'd be pregnant? Â Did we not use a condom? Did it break?"
Jim shook his head. "We used protection, every time. Including in the shower."
Her cheeks went bright red at his comment, but she pushed forward. "Then it makes no sense. It couldn't be you. If...you know, we did what you said."
"It can happen. Condoms arenât fool proof, and we were pretty enthusiastic." His stomach was in knots. Jim paused. He wasn't trying to get out of his responsibilities, but it would be stupid not to get all the details. "You had the accident the day after I left. Not to be indelicate, but have you been with anyone since?"
She snorted. "Are you freaking kidding me? Iâve been lucky to go shopping without supervision. Jim nodded. "I can believe that. Okay, then. Mystery solved." He dragged a hand through his hair, wondering if he should go hug her or kiss her, or do something other than sit like a bump on a log as he attempted to get over the shock.
Y/N grimaced. "Urn..."
He saw her, heard her, but his brain was racing a million miles an hour.
A baby.
Sweet mercy, heâd had one night with Y/N, and they'd gone and got her pregnant. There was so much wrong with that in so many ways he could barely put one thought behind another. He wanted her. Wanted to care for her, and be there for her. Being a father? Not on the list of things he had planned. Not today, maybe not ever.
Time to think was good. Jim resisted glancing at his watch, because he didnât give a fuck it wasnât even noon. His thinking time was going to require a couple hard shots of liquor. "I'll call you this afternoon."
She shook her head. "Tomorrow."
Blast it all. Jim took advantage of his height and crowded her. "Look, I'll admit it. I'm more than a touch floored right now, but that doesnât change whatâs important. I care about you, and whether or not you believe me, I know there is a good possibility I'm the father of your baby. So we can think things through, and talk about them, but there is one thing I want to make clear right now. I will be in your life, Y/N. I will be there to help you, and there is nothing you can say that will change my mind."
For the first time since their strange conversation had begun, a faint hint of a real smile teased her lips and the lines at the corners of her eyes softened. She laid a hand on his crossed arms. "Thank you."
He didnât remember leaving. Next thing he knew he was in his truck tearing down a quiet back road. The radio remained silent while the snow blanketing the fields rose and fell like an endless sea around him.
Y/N was pregnant, and he was going to be a father.
Flash back to 1 year agoâŚ
Y/N started on her favorite thing at breakfast time. The waffle house. She had finished the structure then was having trouble with the door. The piece fell in the house and Y/N Â was digging it out carefully with her fingers. Oh no. please don't ruin the house She pulled the piece out and tried again and almost lost it again.
All of a sudden she heard a voice, "Y'know, why don't you try this?" She saw a toothpick go through the piece of waffle house to be the door. She looked up at where the voice came from and saw a guy about her age looking at her. "Now why didn't I think of that?" She said kind of shyly. She kept avoiding eye contact with him. "Well you're too close to the project, don't be too hard on yourself." Â "You're right." "Sometimes you need an outsiders perspective."
Jim looked at her and smiled. "A fresh eye never hurts." "I'm Y/N." She looked in his eyes and was waiting for his hand to meet hers. He stretched his hand out and grabbed hers with both of his hands. "Yes." "I'm Jim Mason." "Nice to meet you." Their hands let go and they kept staring into each-others eyes. Then Henry broke the silence by saying, "It's pretty, keep up the good work."
"I see you're sitting there alone." "Um, do you want to come sit down?" Â "Sure, Sure." "That would be great." Jim whispered. "So are you an architect?" She looked into his eyes. "I am not, I work at an aquarium." Y/N smiled. Then looked at him. "Oh, so that's where the smell is coming from." She could see the embarrassment in his eyes. "Yeah, yeah I was feeding the walruses this morning and I thought I got most of it off of me, but I guess not." She saw him take the lemon out of his water and rub it on his hands. She kept staring down at his hands thinking in her head. She then smiled. "I love that smell." "No you don't." "Fish don't even like that smell."
"The best smell in the world." Jim's eyes met Y/N's again and then..."Well, my fingers are available for your sniffing pleasure anytime you need them."
One year seemed like ages ago, Jim held down a job at the time at a local aquarium in PV. The first time he had ever met Y/N was at a local diner, a fond memory but one she may not remember. Jim was deep in thought during the drive, if she didn't remember then he guessed that if he recreated them maybe it might jog her memory.
It was like some nightmare she couldnât quite wake up from. The only thing keeping her from flipping out completely was the knowledge she had a roof over her head for the long run. The house was hers, lock, stock and barrel, an inheritance from her mom, along with enough money to make being a single mom bearable until the kid was in school and she could work more full-time hours.
And... It wasnât right, but the other thing grounding her? The expression in Jim's eyes the other day-So serious. So determined and solid in spite of his surprise about the baby.
She leaned on the wall and practiced breathing out her frustration in time with the slow, steady scrapes of the shovel outside her door. Whoever had been clearing her driveway, and the even rasps were strangely calming.
Eventually the noises stopped, and the doorbell rang. She  expected to see one of her brothers, although they usually stormed in, no matter how often she asked them to knock. Instead it was Jim who leaned on the shovel heâd just finished using on the sidewalk. Somehow he still managed to look all dangerous and sexy even considering the pink plastic handle.
He grinned. "Morning."
Y/N glanced past him at the walkways. "Morning. You've been busy."
She opened the door and let him pass. He'd toed off his boots and followed her into the living area.
They settled across from each other, his gaze staying firmly on her face. Y/N ignored him best she could as she gathered the papers strewn on the table.
The silence stretched on for far too long.
"So..." Jim broke off then cleared his throat. "I hate that there's this wall between us. I'm not going to walk on eggshells anymore, so if I step over a line, tell me to go to hell, okay? Â We can stop this stupid awkwardness and be honest with each other."
"Fine by me." Y/N leaned back and waited for whatever bomb he wanted to drop this time.
She shrugged. âLife goes on as usual. I try to get over this stupid amnesia as it relates to numbers so I can go back to working at the garage. I take it you'll be starting up at the shop?"
Jim  frowned. "I meant what about us?"
Oh boy.
"I..." He wanted honesty. Y/N lifted her eyes to meet his square on. "I like you, Jim Part of me really hopes what you're saying is true because I've would like to get involved with you. I am just frustrated I don't remember anything about us.Of course, that means if we did fool around and I've forgotten, I'm doubly pissed off, because I'd been waiting forever, and it's just wrong to have lost those memories. "
His smile had widened the sexy one that melted her butter faster than it should. "Trust me; I can hardly wait to make some new ones."
Dammit. Dammit. Dammit. She held up a hand as if to ward him off. "But we can't. Not yet."
Confusion crowded his expression. "If you want to be with me, and I want to be with you, then why arenât we getting together, Y/N? Why arenât we facing the future, and your pregnancy, as partners the way we should?"
A wave of sadness and frustration rolled over her leaving her exhausted. " I admit that I do like you, Jim, but as far as I know we've never even kissed. How on earth can I simply go 'hey, okay' and dive headfirst into a long-term relationship with you? None of it makes sense, and not being sure is frustrating me more and more."
Anger boiled over, and she whipped the pillow from her hands. It spun across the room, narrowly missing a table lamp. Y/N Â pressed her fists against her temples as she fought to settle down.
Stupid hormones. Or maybe the "new Y/N â had triggered her over-the-top response. The one with far too much vinegar in her blood.
Jim hadnât taken his gaze off her. Jim was on his feet in an instant, gently rubbing her upper arms as he made soothing noises. He pulled her against his chest, and it wasnât sexual, just comfort and understanding.
Y/N twisted her face to the side, slipped her arms around him and accepted his hug. Let the warmth of the embrace twine around them. Let the smooth repetitive touch of his hands down her back relax away the tension. She stood there in his arms for a good five minutes before all the frustration and fire had eased off enough that she could finally take a deep breath.
Jim squeezed her a little tighter. "I'm here for you. Like this, if nothing more. My commitment has no agendas, no deadlines. Just one moment after another until we make it through."
Under her cheek his heart pumped out a smooth, even tempo, and Y/N clung tight. To the firm support of his body and gentle touch of his hands. While she wants him  in some half-dreamed-of sexual-fantasy world, right now things were still so unsettled.
It was nice to have one solid place to stand. One solid individual she could lean against who helped stop the spinning, even for a moment. She stepped away from him reluctantly. As nice as it was to have his support, she wanted to get her life back .
