Painting Class First Day of Class 9/27/2021
Hello students, Welcome to the 2021-1 Fall Semester
Students where sent an email over the weekend with instructions for the following course:
ART2500C or ART2502C (Painting 1 and Advanced Painting Class ) Mon/Weds 12:20 - 3:40 pm Blended Format
You also received a class syllabus and a link to meet virtually via TEAMS. The virtually first class meet is scheduled for Monday 9/27/2021 at 12:30pm.
This link was sent to your school ID (mymdc account).
Make sure you rsvp as soon as you receive it.
You are responsible for reading this entire email.
I understand that some of you might be first year students, so I have also included a document on proper ways of interacting with your professor. I am cordially asking all students to please adhere to those instructions regarding sending all communication to me.
https://www.bestcolleges.com/blog/email-etiquette-in-college/
Please read below the format for these classes as we will begin a blended format this semester.
Note that most of the semester will continue in a remote format.
Next week I will send information on the dates for in person meetings. This will be done with space limitations, meaning only a specific number of students will attend in person at any given time. I will advise on those issues during our first meeting on Monday via Teams.
I will be your instructor.
I am Professor Alena Fresquet , I teach the foundations courses at MDC North.
I am also a Mix Media and Installation artist. I received my MFA degree on 8/2000 and I have been teaching at MDC since 2001.
I use the following platforms for teaching, TEAMS, Twitter and Tumblr.
I will not be using Blackboard at all during the semester. I will discuss further on Monday, the reasons why I use the above platforms instead of Bb. For now, just know that this has been a staple of my teaching since before the pandemic and I have used it successfully since 2009.
I encourage you to go through the class blog here to see how other students have engaged in learning during the Spring ,Summer and Fall semesters using these platforms.
Also review my twitter handle @Prof_AFresquet so you can see how I interact during class time with students. When classes begin, I will be posting information regarding class assignments and lecture on this blog:
https://artleaguemdcnorth.tumblr.com/
I monitor your work and attendance during class in the following ways:
1) TEAMS , when we have virtual meets 2) https://twitter.com/prof_afresquet?lang=en (Twitter ) 3) Your personal Tumblr blog when you submit work for review.
You will follow me on twitter using my class handle shown here:
@Prof_AFresquet .
And you will follow the class blog when class assignments are posted.
On the first day of class, you will use the class time after our TEAMS meeting to create both a Twitter account and a Tumblr account.
1) In both the Tumblr and Twitter handle, use your name and include your class (ART2500C or ART2502C ) in the bio. You will read additional instructions regarding your first Tumblr post and first tweet on the class blog on Monday after our virtual meet .
For the TEAMS meeting today, make sure you accept the invite to enter the room on Monday at the start of class.
Try to be in the waiting room 10 minutes before the meeting. Once I start it is impossible for me to break out to let people into the chat.
Try to review the class materials and write any questions you have regarding them to ask during the meeting.
As of this writing a return to in person learning in the Fall has been postponed. MDC continues to function in phase 2. This class is a blended course so we will meet remotely for the start of the semester and as the semester progresses, we will meet in person several times.
I will create a list of the days we will be in person in the next few weeks.
Most likely, I will leave in person interaction for critiques and project presentations.
For now, know that I am here to help you navigate this semester.
Please let me know if there are special needs you require to succeed before classes begin so we can work towards helping you learn as seamless as possible.
Tips for navigating the semester start by having good study skills and proper school conduct.
That means that even though we are having a virtual interaction, you should still do the following:
1) Turn your computer on ten minutes before class to make sure everything is working properly when we have virtual meets. That means video, mic and sound. 2) I encourage you to dress up for class accordingly and be ready to learn in an adult and proper manner. 3) Work on developing good study skills, discipline and on task qualities to fulfill the class assignments. 4) Aim to maintain excellent time management skills and self-discipline. I recommend that students use the allotted class time to complete class assignments.
I follow attendance guidelines, if you are not on the TEAMS meeting or assignments are have not posted work to your Tumblr portfolio by the due dates it means you are not doing the class work.
Keep yourself on task, on time and ready to learn. I encourage you to work on those skills so that you can have a successful semester. If at any time during the semester you become sick or encounter any personal difficulties that inhibit your ability to comply with your studies, please reach out to me accordingly.
The sooner we deal with a situation the quicker we can resolve it. I look forward to working with you and helping you achieve these goals. We will talk more on Monday , the first day of class…

One, I followed you into t100 and now at the last I have followed you into Barry (it's so good!). Two, I'm teaching a writing "workshop" (that's not the right word--not a workshop proper. It's going to be two hours and we're covering a few different topics with a mix of lecture/questions/practice--in dance, that's what a workshop is) this weekend for the students in my freshman intro class. I'm going over common comp things that make writing harder to read, what they are and how they work. (1/2)
I’m doing passive voice, independent and dependent clauses, where the subject and the main predicate are in a sentence and how far apart they are, intro/conclusion structure, using a long quote, when to give all the details of a point and when to just briefly summarize, or some mix of the above. (2/3)
The course as a whole is for entering freshman students to get into College Life, with a theme of basic mathematical proofs and writing. It’s cataloged in such a way that this might be one of the only writing courses many of them take, and I want to go over simple, beyond technically correct grammar, composition stuff that I think they really should have at least the opportunity to learn. Any advice? (3/3)
yay barry! i wrote an 8k barry fic and i still haven’t posted it. maybe one day.
also yay, a pedagogy question!
while i definitely think somebody should teach students grammatical stuff, i also believe that at the college level, if they’re still struggling, they need to utilize alternate resources like one-on-one tutoring in order to get up to speed. at my school there’s a writing center where they can drop in and someone will go over their entire paper with them. i try to veer away from teaching anecdotal information (with the exception of MLA format, which is a pain to teach because for the life of me i can’t make it fun) and stick instead to focusing on how to develop critical thinking so they have the ability to pinpoint the things that aren’t working and the skills to find the answers. they know how to use google, but they don’t yet know how to figure out what they don’t know.
i focus on teaching writing as rhetoric, which strips away the entire concept of Correct Grammar. all writing is dependent on audience and any rules that might exist change for the genre of each text. you email your professors in a different voice than you text your friends. if you have mistakes or use shorthand or slang in a text to your friends, that’s not wrong at all, in fact it’s totally correct writing for the genre. there’s no such thing as incorrect language, only an inability to adapt your voice to your audience.
in my class, i have students across all majors. some of them are going on to take a handful of humanities courses or seminars that have 15-page literary analysis assignments. others will go on to write dozens of lab reports. and yet others will have to write cold hard scientific research papers. all of those are different genres and require different writing skills. if i focus on the expectations of one field, the students who are in the others won’t be prepared to go to their future writing-intensive courses. so i aim instead to teach them how to throw and change their voice as necessary in any given medium, and moreover, how to face the blank page without fear.
here are some important texts that might generate good discussion on language and how they’ve approached writing in the past versus how they might approach it in college:
“should writers use they own english?” by vershawn ashanti young
“the transformation of silence into language and action” by audre lorde
“shitty first drafts” by anne lamott
lastly, in any writing class i think it’s important to talk as little as possible so students have room to speak. they’re better at teaching each other (and listen more to each other) than i am, and more importantly, a good teacher is one who guides students to conclusions rather than offering them answers. 90% of what i do when i teach is ask questions, and as students offer responses, i write them on the board. together we look at the notes we took and come to conclusions about whatever topic we’re discussing. socratic method, babey.

Hello everyone! I am just under a month away from completing my first year of college, so, I thought I would make an advice post on what I learnt, and how I was able to succeed! 1. GO TO ALL YOUR LECTURES! Within reason of course. I.e., if you're sick physically or mentally, breaks are good! But, that being said, you cannot learn everything from a textbook. As such, you need to attend your lectures! You pay to hear these people teach, and seriously if you miss too many lectures you will fall behind because they are often fast-paced and FULL of information. Also, don’t just listen to your lectures, take notes!! They are vital to your learning, and, if your prof posts lecture notes the night before, write/review them BEFORE you go to your lecture. 2. GO TO YOUR PROFESSORS OFFICE HOURS! Office hours are a blessing that not enough people use!! I go to my Philosophy professors office hours every week (because I love Philosophy but also because readings can be difficult, and he’s an amazing prof) and he has never once been upset or annoyed, in fact, he praises me on being so devoted to my studies. Don’t be afraid of asking them “dumb” questions either, if they're a good prof, they wont consider any of your questions not worth their time because they know you're just trying to learn. 3. DO YOUR READINGS. Readings are assigned for a reason, they either are the material you need to learn, or, they help immensely with the material in your course. If you fall behind on your readings, it will be exhausting to catch up to them (especially if you try to do them all the night before an exam). 4. START YOUR ESSAYS/PAPERS RIGHT AWAY. Do NOT wait until the night before- or even two nights before- your paper is due to start writing, especially if it’s a research essay!! You need at least a week of research and a good few days (or more) to create a thought out, well written, and well edited paper (trust me, I'm an English major). Also make sure you're writing your papers in the right format, as Professors will dock marks if you have incorrect formatting. 5. This may seem obvious, but, STUDY FOR YOUR MIDTERMS/FINALS. Please PLEASE PLEASE! DO NOT wing your midterms or finals!! Of course sometimes life gets in the way, so if you cannot get a few good days (or even weeks) of studying, just try to do as much as you can. Midterms and finals are HARD, and they aren't tests that you’ll be able to walk into with no preparation and get an A+. 6. Three words; SAME DAY REVIEW. The most helpful thing that I tell you guys. It has helped me over the last year of my education more than any other form of review. Each day, after my lectures, I go over the material and re-write any notes, or re-read any readings. It is SO helpful in memory retention, especially if you combine this with weekly reviews. This helps immensely when finals come around, because you’ve already been prepping/studying all term!! 7. Last but not least, GET THE PROPER AMOUNT OF SLEEP AND FOOD!! I struggled A LOT with this in my first term. I have to get up at 5 am, as I have a two hour commute to get to my school, but I was still going to bed at ~12 every night, and as such I was living like a caffeinated zombie. I also struggled a lot with getting the correct amount of nutrition, and ended up loosing over 30 pounds (not in a healthy or nice looking way, either), just from a lack of eating through the school day or not eating while studying. When I finally realized what was happening and how taxing my bad habits had become on my mental health and also my grades, it took a lot of work to get better. I now try to always go to bed sometime between 9-10, because sleep is so so so important to being able to function and learn! For food, I started making lunch and breakfast the night before, so that I wouldn't have to rush in the morning or just forgo food all together because I was too busy. High protein and GOOD foods go a long way in helping you through your busy school day, and finals week. Things like oatmeal, vegetables, fruit, and even stuff like peanut butter are great for your brain and body! Of course, I'm not perfect and still have to work on all of this every single day. I hope that these tips will help some of you guys out, especially if you're entering a post-secondary institution for the first time this year. These are all things that I swear by and they have helped me so much in succeeding during my first year of College. Hailey, xx. ( philohsophical.tumblr.com )

Making the Most Out of Your Junior and Senior Years
Hello high school upperclassmen! College awaits in the near future, but first step is to graduate high school. For most of us (high schoolers and college students alike), this is not the semester we imagined, but we can still make the most out of it. Here’s some advice on how to do so:
Try your best in academics. I understand this may be difficult with the online format because most of us are used to in-person classes. It’s a new process for us all so take advantage of resources that your school offers. As I’ve learned in one of my college courses, the foundation for learning and information retention is getting enough sleep, proper nutrition and hydration, and taking breaks (Zoom fatigue is real). Hang in there, folks!
Make connections with your teachers. Go to their office hours (if offered) and ask questions. More often than not, they are happy to explain math problems or talk about your ideas for an essay. For juniors, this can be opportunity to find who you would like a teacher recommendation from for college applications. Your teachers are here for you (and they’re also adjusting to this new online teaching format too). This is a good practice for college too since all of your professors will offer office hours where you can discuss topics that you don’t understand in class, get feedback on papers, discuss paper topics, and possibly a research opportunity!
Practice self-care and self-compassion. Find practices that help you destress and relax. Maybe it’s Netflix and a hot bath or scrolling TikTok for a set amount of time as a study break. Even better if your chosen form of self-care is something away from a screen (since we spend most of our day in Zoom classes), like taking a short walk/form of exercise or playing with a pet. Understand that you are doing your best given these unusual circumstances, so be kind to yourself and your mental health.
Keep in touch with your friends. It’s easy to maintain friendships when you see each other in class, in the hallway, or in the cafeteria, but with remote learning, we miss those casual interactions. Scheduling weekly/biweekly FaceTime or Zoom calls with friends to catch up, play Among Us (or the latest game that’s taken GenZ by storm) or simply do homework while on the call can help alleviate loneliness.
@seniors: Try not to let senioritis kick in. It’s tempting, I know, but high school isn’t over yet. Also, it’s important to do well in your studies until graduations because colleges will request your high school transcript which includes both semesters of senior year. Also, for those taking AP or IB exams, a high score can count towards college credit or waive some college course prerequisites. The grind is worth it!
Take this time to do some self-reflection and self-discovery. Have you picked up or rediscovered a hobby during quarantine? What is important to you (values, hobbies, etc)? Where and who do you want to be in the next 4 or 5 years? Have you decided on a major or area of study that you’re passionate about and interested in? It’s okay not to know too! Interests and paths may change and that’s why many college students change their major at least once.

To Free or Not to Free That is the Question
I'm going to assume what you meant by the medium name is the name that I use on Tumblr which is blackmormonmed.
I would like to start this essay by addressing your final question in the rubric for the assignment which is what are your plans for writing? well as you know before I retired and decided to become a nontraditional student at Utah Valley University, I worked in the film industry. as the court has progressed and the onset of our social distancing secondary to the pandemic at hand, I have been contacted by my former writing partner to possibly work on a script this summer. in all actuality, the script was written by us about 10 years ago and has suddenly sparked some interest from some people willing to put some financing forth to have the film produced. but if I decide to do this, And I will say it is because of this course, I'm going to allow a student here at the university to join in writing a professional screenplay. I take the shame upon myself for not being a better didactic writer, quite frankly for all the years that I did write I was mostly an idea man I could come up with a treatment for an idea no problem, however coming up with the actual screenplay itself in the grammatical effort that goes into a final product for a presentation I have greatly faltered in over the years. I never found any need to improve upon this because our agent would always pay someone to go through and grammatically correct our scripts. so today I'm taking a different view I'm going to try to turn in a final script with the grammatical corrections with the aid of a writer here at the University. Who knows, if it sells, that will take care of a couple of years of tuition for me and give a nice calling card to someone that wants to be known as a writer. Let us move on to the other questions that should be addressed in this letter. what are the reflections that I have on my free right over the course of the semester? I must admit it was very much a struggle at the beginning of the semester digesting the concept of the “free right”. I notice that these struggles were not just my own but several students in the class shared the same ideas. you might call it the elephant and the string complex. when a baby elephant comes to the circus, they tie one of its legs to a stake with a rope. As the elephant grows larger in size and tries to walk away from the stake it feels the tug on the rope. The elephant can be at full size but the same size rope that held it as an infant does the same job of keeping it in place. The reason for telling this story is to illustrate how students have been tied to a certain idea by the University teaching system. The teaching dogma of "do it my way, or the highway, or you won't get your A".
After digesting the idea that we the students could write freely, that we could say what is on our mind regardless of grammatical formatting, and freely write down what was on our minds, truly opened up new doors for me creatively. The strings that bound me extended far beyond the University but into my former career where the stakes were a bit higher. Do it their way or the highway, except now, you would not you be able to feed yourself in the coming months. Picasso once said, “learn the rules like a professional so that you can break them like an artist”.
As time progressed in English 2010 it revealed to us all that there were some rules, and yes, my grade would depend on adhering to some of those ties that bind to academia. Where I completely cast aside my diligence for formal grammatical correction to the point of free-flowing enjoying the comfort of free writing without penalty, I made the mistake of letting that carry over into what should be my professionally submitted assignments. My professor wrote me a note saying that my brain thinks faster than I could write. That was not incorrect. There are so many ideas that swim around in one's head, it would truly be impossible to do corrections as you freely wright along. I learned what was necessary though it did not depict it in most of my freewriting on my Tumblr blog. In the end, I did attempt to adhere to the professional rules and then attempted to break them like an artist. My favorite writings from the free-writing section of the class was my three-part piece on “I kissed a girl”. I'm not quite sure if I'm supposed to post the entire writing here but since I'm running out of space and time I will simply provide the link to the first of the three-part series.
https://blackmormonmed.tumblr.com/post/614185173738815488/i-kissed-a-girl
https://blackmormonmed.tumblr.com/post/614221426527961088/the-kiss-part-2

Again not that all the grammatical corrections are in there but it was my favorite piece because it had emotional content, and for me, it was rarity. The first time I think I've ever written somewhat of a diary to depict things that are happening in my own life. In going over these past writings In reviewing these posts I see producing my feelings on paper could have been more readily relayed had I used the proper punctuation, and even at some point gave it a quick read-through before submitting it. Though the aforementioned were my favorite free-writings that I submitted, there does pose the question of what was my favorite writing in the course?
Although the final research project did open my eyes to a lot of things that I had not realized before, I have to choose overall the opinion paper to be my most favorite “Let's Get Affirmative About This Action”
https://blackmormonmed.tumblr.com/post/615604398135083008/lets-get-affirmative-about-this-action
Writing this paper gave me the opportunity to look at my subject matter from different points of view. Yes, normally we do look at papers from different points of view, but only at the hand of already published academic articles. In the case of the opinion paper, we were drawing simply on what we thought someone else might say about a particular subject and then found pieces of scholastic material to back those opinions up. I have to admit it was quite entertaining just to write, especially when I was able to write about diversity in universities from the viewpoint of a southern bigot.
Fish, what can I say? At the end of the day you want me to write some sort of letter to explain how you can improve on being a teacher. the only thing I can actually come up with is nothing really. From the first moment of the class where you sat amongst us like one of the students and no one could figure out that you were the professor that was pretty much priceless. If if I were to give any suggestions in the future the only thing I could say is find a way to convince the students extremely early on that you're going to make this course about freeing their minds. I know that may sound a bit Matix-ey but I can think of no better terms to say it. If you find a way to do that, the experience that we all had that took several weeks to get, would come a little sooner. In the end, though we are not in the classroom, picture me standing on my desk....
oh captain my captain.

Assignment 2 Project Paper Comparative Essay
Due Week 8 and worth 200 points
This “Assignment 2” writing assignment is a comparative essay focused on topics encountered in our HUM 111 class. The project will be based on research but will reflect your views and interpretation of the topic. This project is designed to help you stretch your mind and your abilities as an organized, innovative, and critical thinker. If approached properly, it should also be fun!
Choose one (1) of the topics from the list of topic choices below. Read the topic carefully. Write a three to four (3-4) page paper (750-1,000 words) that follows instructions and covers each part of the topic. (The title page and References list do not get included in this word count).
Note: Your instructor may require you to submit your topic choice for approval before the end of Week 5.
For the topic you choose:
1. Establish a clear thesis about your topic as part of the introductory paragraph (often the thesis is the last thing one determines after doing the basic research and outline; however it will be placed in the first paragraph of your paper).
2. This is a comparative essay. Comparison approached properly will require some critical thinking on your part. Use a point-by-point approach for the essay. That means, if comparing subject A with subject B, don’t do the first half of the essay on subject A and then the second half on subject B–that will seem like two (2) separate essays and comparisons will tend to get lost. Instead, you should be mentioning both subjects in most of your paragraphs as you compare them throughout the essay. Comparisons will identify similarities as well as contrasts.
3. Do not try to do everything on your two (2) subjects. You should end up narrowing your focus to a few insights and issues about the subjects being compared. And, from those fairly specific points of comparison, you will develop a thesis and glean some lessons.
4. Follow closely the instructions below for your specific topic.
5. Include a concluding paragraph at the end. This paragraph will, in some way, refer back to the thesis established in your first paragraph, since now you have demonstrated and supported it. It may be here that you also include your observations relating your study to the modern workplace or society (see your topic). Try to finish with flair!
6. Use at least three (3) good quality academic sources, with one (1) source being the class text.Note:Wikipediaand other similar Websites do not qualify as academic resources. You are highly encouraged to use the Resource Center tab at the top of your Blackboard page.
Topic Choices – Choose just one (1) of the topics below:
Qualities of the Hero: Comparing Gilgamesh and Odysseus.Write an essay comparing these two (2) heroic figures from ancient epics of different cultures, especially focusing your analysis on the sources about their encounters with monsters: Gilgamesh encounters the monster guarding the forest, Humbaba, in Tablets 3-5 of theEpic of Gilgamesh(seehttp://www.ancienttexts.org/library/mesopotamian/gilgamesh/; scroll down to the Tablet links; think of “Tablet” numbers like chapter numbers).” Odysseus encounters Polyphemus the Cyclops in Book 9 ofThe Odyssey(see http://www.theoi.com/Text/HomerOdyssey9.html; from line 105 to the end). Your paper should:
a) Compare Gilgamesh and Odysseus as to their heroic qualities, noting similarities and differences, using specific examples from the epics.
b) Summarize what this indicates about differences between ancient Mesopotamian and Greek cultures in their ideals and expectations.
c) From this comparison, suggest ways that current cultural ideals and expectations shape modern notions about role models and heroes.
Confucius and Aristotle on Virtue. Write an essay comparing these two (2) ancient thinkers on the concept of virtue or good ethical character and conduct. Stay focused on the issue; keep any biographical or other information short or limited. As much as possible, analyze their writings (in translation, of course), using Confucius’Analects(athttp://classics.mit.edu/Confucius/analects.html ) and Aristotle’sNicomachean Ethics(athttp://classics.mit.edu/Aristotle/nicomachaen.html ). Your paper should:
a) Compare the teachings of Confucius and Aristotle on what constitutes virtue or good ethical character and conduct, noting similarities and differences in specific ideas or emphasis.
b) Consider what your findings suggest about differences between ancient Chinese and ancient Greek culture.
c) From this comparison, suggest ideas of virtue that can apply to ethics in a modern setting, such as a diverse workplace.
Comparing Sculptures of Ancient India and Greece.Write an essay comparing the way gods and humans were depicted in sculpture in ancient India and Greece, and identify the cultural values and ideals that these art works reflect in each case. Your paper should:
a) Using specific examples, compare the way gods and people were depicted in the sculptures of ancient India and Greece, noting similarities and differences.

Focus your comparison on their writings as found athttp://www.humanistictexts.org/lucretius.htmand http://www.humanistictexts.org/wangchung.htm#On Not Flying to Heaven. Your paper should:
a) Using examples from their writings, compare these two (2) thinkers on their views about specific subjects and on their approach in explaining and expressing their skepticism.
b) From this comparison, identify popular beliefs in each culture that seem similar and those that seem different.
c) From this comparison, suggest any modern situation in which materialist skeptics confront spiritual and religious beliefs, and comment on the considerations of free expression and cultural respect.
Comparing Ancient Male Rulers.Take any two (2) of these rulers and write an essay comparing them: Ramses II, Shihuangdi, Constantine, Ashoka, Pericles, or Charlemagne. Select rulers from different cultures. You may also propose (for approval or not) a ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:
a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and methods of rule and their apparent ideals and practices, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.
b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.
c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.

You may also propose (for approval or not) a female ruler not listed. Avoid lengthy quoting or lengthy close paraphrasing from biographical sources. Make it YOUR comparative analysis. Your paper should:
a) Compare the two (2) rulers in terms of their situation and ascent to power, their methods of rule, and their achievements and resourcefulness, noting similarities and differences. Use specific examples.
b) Consider what your study suggests about the cultures over which they ruled, identifying any similarities and differences between the cultures.
c) From this comparison, suggest lessons about different types of effective leadership by a female in the world of modern business and / or modern politics.
Other topic choice using a comparative approach (proposed by student or instructor) and approved by the professor and supported by the grading rubric.
The Project Paper will be graded on:
1. The level to which the instructions were followed for the paper generally and for the specific topic.
2. The establishment of a clear thesis about your topic.
3. The adequacy and relevance of information, examples, and details which support the general thesis.
4. Covering each part of the topic as instructed, including the comparisons, the consideration of ancient cultural differences, and the reflection on lessons for modern society or the modern workplace.
