TOM GLYNN-CARNEY INTERVIEWED FOR DEADLINE MAGAZINE.
IS THAT YOU LYING IN BED IN EPISODE 5, GETTING THE BURNT VALYRIAN STEEL PEELED OFF OF YOUR BODY?
"It certainly is me."
I THOUGHT YOU WERE DEAD. SO YOU'RE NOT DEAD YET?
"I say a word ā€¦ unless dead people can speak."
SO YOU ARE SURE AS YOU'RE SITTING HERE, YOU ARE NOT DEAD.
"Iā€™m not dead yet."
LET'S BACK UP TO THE DAY WHEN YOU SHOT THAT EPIC DRAGON FIGHT.
"Well, that day was, in fact, probably about three weeks work, trying to get all these certain angles and these set pieces together."
"It takes a while to coordinate something like that."
"And it was great fun."
"It was a little different."
"The stuff I had to do previously with the big dialogue, the heavy council scenes and the moments in the pub ā€¦ that felt more theatrical."
"And by theatrical, I donā€™t mean hammy and stuff, I mean being in theater and doing a play."
"But this [dragon fight] felt very filmic, being strapped into this crane and having this big camera on a long hydraulic arm thrown in your face."
"There were lots of green screens and gray screens and tennis balls on sticks and wind machines."
"It was great."
"It was a big learning curve for me as well, because Iā€™ve never done anything quite as elaborate as that before in terms of CGI work."
DO YOU THINK CRISTON SAW WHAT AEMOND DID TO AEGON'S DRAGON IN THAT FIGHT? THAG AEMOND IS TO BLAME?
"Criston definitely sees Aegon on the ground and Aemond near him with his sword drawn."
"So he can make his own mind up about Aemondā€™s intentions, which is still unclear even to me."
"Iā€™m not sure the story was there."
"There could be various outcomes."
WHAT HAS IT BEEN LIKE TO PLAY SOMEBODY WHO'S SO BLOODY UNLIKABLE?
"So youā€™re not team Aegon, then?"
"Who wants to be liked?"
"Whereā€™s the fun in that?"
"I think itā€™s great playing someone like Aegon because heā€™s so unpredictable."
"Heā€™s so volatile."
"Heā€™s not just someone who people donā€™t like."
"Heā€™s a tragic case."
"Heā€™s a complete and utter tragedy of a person, and I feel deeply, deeply sorry for him."
"And I guess thatā€™s kind of why Iā€™ve wanted to investigate his vulnerabilities, his fragilities and his boyishness, all the things that he lacks in his life that kind of inform his decisions, that have given him a certain reputation."
"Thereā€™s a lot to unpack in him."
"Heā€™s way more layered and complex than just an unlikable character."
IT'S BEEN AN INTERESTING JOURNEY WATCHING AEGON AND AEMOND BECAUSE THEY'RE OBVIOUSLY BAD KIDS, WHICH DOESN'T MAKE SENSE BECAUSE IT'S NOT LIKE THEIR DAD WAS AN AWFUL GUY. SO WHERE DOES THAT BADNESS COME FROM?
"I dunno."
"I mean, theyā€™ve got Targaryen blood running through them, so thereā€™s going to be an element of madness somewhere."
"I think if they had a different upbringing and a different experience of childhood, things may have been different."
"If they had the treatment that Rhaenyra got, for example, their lives could be different."
"She was very much the golden child."
"She came first."
"She was the one whose picture was on the fridge."
"So yeah, I think that in many ways theyā€™re a product of their history and their upbringing."
"But then again, theyā€™re spoiled as well."
"Theyā€™ve never had to work for anything and that can have its effects."
"Thatā€™s probably a question for a psychologist, not for me."
WHY DOES HE DISLIKE HIS BROTHER SO MUCH?
"I donā€™t think he does."
BUT HE WAS SUCH A SHIT TO HIM IN THAT BROTHEL SCENE.
"Thatā€™s brothers."
"Aegon was pissed off that for weeks that Aemond has been in the small council and heā€™d been conniving and plotting with Criston behind his back."
"That kind of clique-ness and keeping Aegon out of the situation for Aemondā€™s own self-gain, knowing that Aegon would take over the position of King should he get the opportunity, Aegon needed to bring him down a peg."
"I donā€™t think it come from a place of disliking him."
It comes from a place of being like, ā€˜you are my little brother, know your place.ā€™
"Itā€™s dismissiveness and also, Iā€™m from Manchester."
"From where Iā€™m from, there are so many sibling relationships that are completely flawed and fractured."
"Itā€™s very normal for me."
"Iā€™m lucky I have a great relationship with my sibling, but itā€™s very normal and not out of the ordinary at all for you to see two siblings who actively want to hurt each other."
"It doesnā€™t come from hatred."
"Thatā€™s just the way people behave."

Chapter Eight (4.6k)
It was a big deal, being called on by God. A lot of winners see it as an opportunity to meet the big man, to thank him and take on whatever offer he suggests. But to others, it's an intimidating moment, standing in front of the large office doors. Many meetings worth millennials happened in the very office they were beckoned to.Ā
Worry and maybe panic entered their bodies, wondering what could be the true reason behind the meeting. Why bother bringing them here, when he could have discussed it in the safety and warmth of their own home?Ā
Being the first two sons of God was tricky as well. A single mistake, and you could be punished. A single good deed and all of Heaven worships you for your work. But Lucifer never expected this. Never expected to be welcomed into the first stages of the Hierarchy. Of course, being the son of God, he was already halfway there. But this was a bigger step he never expected.Ā
He dressed to his finest. A deep blue button up and white slick pants. Knee high black boots and deep blue gloves that covered over his hands. His hair, a tad bit messy, but overall pristine. He was nervous, he had never seen the inside of his fatherā€™s office, and he was just about to.Ā
Stood beside him, Michael clutched onto the sleeves of his shirt. A white frill button up and deep blue pants. The two never meant to match, yet it had become a habit over the years.Ā
ā€œIā€™m nervousā€¦ā€ Michael muttered. Lucifer swallowed hard as he looked at him.Ā
ā€œDonā€™t beā€¦ Iā€™m sure itā€™s nothing serious. I donā€™t think weā€™re in trouble.ā€
ā€œMy stars, I hope not.ā€ Michael looked at Lucifer. ā€œDid you apologize to him for what happened yesterday?ā€Ā
ā€œLast night, yeah.ā€ Lucifer nodded quickly. ā€œHave you done anything wrong..?ā€ Michael quickly shook his head.Ā
ā€œNot that I know ofā€¦ā€ He muttered. ā€œButā€¦ He did say itā€™s for the hierarchy, didnā€™t he? Like last night?ā€ He asked. Lucifer swallowed hard once more, giving a firm nod.Ā
ā€œDefinitely.ā€Ā
ā€œSo we must not be in trouble.ā€ Michael muttered, taking a deep breath as he stood tall. ā€œAre you readyā€¦?ā€
ā€œBarely,ā€ Lucifer breathed, yet he stood tall as well.Ā
Michael gave a slight nod as he raised his hand, knocking his fist three times on the big white door. In a matter of seconds, the door inched open, the bright light as so many winners talked about gleamed into their eyes, before fading into the likeness of their fatherā€™s office.Ā
It was large, shrouded in all shades of white. His desk, gold with tints of blue on it. Bookshelves littered with books, trinkets and other things. One trinket of Earth, the other the layers of Heaven. And tucked behind him, a rainbow of colours hovered around a golden center.Ā
Michael took the first step in, with Lucifer following behind him.Ā
ā€œMy sons,ā€ God stood from his seat, snapping his fingers as the doors closed behind them. ā€œAnd how are you this morning?ā€
ā€œNervous.ā€ Lucifer blurted, before he immediately covered his mouth. God raised an eyebrow but laughed.Ā
ā€œDonā€™t be nervous, itā€™s fine.ā€ He gestured to the two seats in front of his desk. ā€œWhat do you have to be nervous about?ā€Ā
Lucifer glanced at Michael, who didnā€™t meet his eyes. He headed over to one of the chairs and sat down, Lucifer following stride.Ā
ā€œIs it because I brought up the hierarchy?ā€ God asked, leaning forward, his elbows pressing into the gold plating of his desk.Ā
ā€œI think so.ā€ Michael spoke, putting his hands in his lap. God gave a small nod, looking between the two of them. He couldnā€™t help but smile, looking at their clothes.Ā
ā€œYou know, when you were about 7 years old, the two of you would match up all the time? You would make sure you wore the same style of clothes, styled your hair the same way and made sure to talk the same way too. As if the two of you were twins.ā€ He said, remembering the good days of their childhood.Ā
Lucifer glanced over to Michael, who glanced back at him. They shared a small smile, knowing how different they really are now.Ā
ā€œI guess though, the two of you grew up.ā€ He sighed, leaning back in his chair. ā€œYou have grown up into fine, young men. And thatā€™s why Iā€™m giving you both this chance, an easier way into the hierarchy than the years of trouble that you would normally have to go through.ā€ He stood from his seat, wandering around the room as he looked at the many books he had.Ā
Michael glanced at Lucifer, confused but willing to learn. Lucifer, on the other hand, was shocked. An easier way into the hierarchy? There was such a thing?Ā
ā€œEver since the two of you were children, the rules of Heaven and Hell had changed drastically.ā€ God took one of the books off the shelf and placed it on his desk. ā€œI still remember the day the deal was struck. I regret bringing the two of you with me that day.ā€ He said.Ā
He flipped open the book, as magic swirled around it, displaying in white and black dust a story unfolding before their eyes.Ā
ā€œYou see, before the two of you were created, Heaven and Hell had an agreement. The two worlds would be separate, but have access to communicate. One world for sinners, and one world for winners.ā€ He explained as the black and white dust following his words.Ā
ā€œBut by the time you two wereā€¦ Less than ten years old, several sinners, demons, tried to breach the gates of Heaven. Tried to storm the one thing Sera and I were fighting to protect.ā€ The dust showed images, demons crawling to the top, fingers trying to grab at the gates of Heaven.Ā
ā€œWe had to exterminate them that day. That is when I made the decision that we had to do something to stop these demons from breaching the safest place known to all kinds. I went down to Hell to strike a deal, and nowā€¦ā€ The dust depicted the two brothers, a portal to the angel world.Ā
ā€œI give you the chance to protect Heaven with all you have.ā€ The dust slowly disappeared into the room, as God closed the book. ā€œIt was written in your prophecies, the two of you destined to protect Heaven.ā€ He picked up the book and brought it back over to the bookshelf.Ā
ā€œFather, whatā€¦ Does this mean?ā€ Michael asked, a frown on his face as his hands gripped at his knees.Ā
ā€œThis meansā€¦ā€ God sat back down at his desk. ā€œMichael. Lucifer. I grant you the position of power, the position of guarding the angelic portal between Hell and Heaven. This portal is opened once a year, and is a very special thing. You must train and learn how to protect it.ā€ God explained.Ā
ā€œWithā€¦?ā€ Lucifer began.Ā
ā€œThe angelic army awaits the two of you. You will hold the higher power among the exorcists. But above you, two of the elder angels who you must respect. Can you do this for me?ā€Ā
ā€œProtect heaven?ā€ Lucifer frowned, trying to grab a hold of the whole situation.Ā
ā€œWhile the portal is open, I want the two of you to enter Hell, but stay by the portal. Any demon or sinner who attempts to enter, you must kill.ā€
The words echoed through Luciferā€™s mind. He could feel his heartbeat in his throat, his eyes wanting to blur as he listened, just barely, to what Michael had to say.Ā
ā€œAnd you say this will get us a better chance at the Hierarchy?ā€
ā€œOf course. You do this for me, and you both will have your own furtherance day.ā€ God explained, yet his words were hazy in between Luciferā€™s struggle to understand.Ā
ā€œKill demons?ā€
ā€œIs that a problemā€¦?ā€ God frowned. Luciferā€™s throat ran dry. A memory passed through his head, a white bandage, black blood. Things began to spin as he stood from his spot.Ā
ā€œI needā€¦ Some air.ā€ He muttered, before leaving the office without a hesitation.Ā
ā€œLucifer!ā€ Michael stood from his spot, heading after him. God, on the other hand, sat in his spot as he watched his sons leave. His fingers linked together, his gaze sharpening as the doors closed behind the two brothers.Ā
ā€œYou better not fail me.ā€Ā
~~~~
Heaven was almost too loud for him. The chatter among the streets, the sound of store jingles as winners entered. The world was too bright, he couldn't see straight and his eyes were going blurry. He could feel his heartbeat pulsing all over, he couldnā€™t catch his breath.Ā
He stumbled down the few steps, before finally sitting down. He didnā€™t even hear the door opening behind him as he tried to calm him breathing. He felt like he was shaking, was he shaking? He looked down at his hands, seeing double. He squeezed his eyes shut, running his hands through his hair.Ā
ā€œLucifer,ā€ Michael rushed down the steps, kneeling down in front of his younger brother. ā€œHey, are you okay?ā€ He reached out, gently touching Luciferā€™s arm.Ā
ā€œDonā€™t, donā€™t-ā€ Lucifer almost pushed Michael away from him. ā€œDonā€™t touch me.ā€ He muttered, his voice shaky, his words barely making it out as he gasped.Ā
Michael sat there, staring at his younger brother as a wave of worry began to wash over him. He removed his hands, watching as Lucifer tried to ground himself once more.Ā
The two of them sat in silence for what felt like hours. The world around them, slowly growing back to its normal sound. The chatter; not so deafening to Lucifer anymore. The light of Heaven, the colours, they didnā€™t blind him as the fuzzy world slowly became clear again. He didnā€™t feel his heartbeat in his hands anymore. He didnā€™t hear the rushing of his blood in his ears.Ā
Yet, sitting beside him, Michael waited. His hands in his lap as he hung his head, looking at his hands, waiting for his brother to snap back to reality.Ā
Taking a careful deep breath, Lucifer sighed, closing his eyes. He wondered why he felt like that, why his body rushed into a panic, a sensation he couldnā€™t quite put a name to.Ā
ā€œSorryā€¦ā€ He muttered. Michael snapped his head up, looking at Lucifer with concern in his eyes.Ā
ā€œAre you okayā€¦?ā€ He asked, scooting closer to him as he rubbed his back. Lucifer paused for a second. His throat was dry, and his mouth tasted weird, but he nodded.Ā
ā€œI think soā€¦ā€
ā€œWhat happenedā€¦?ā€ Michael pondered, trying to make sense of such theatrics.Ā
ā€œI donā€™t knowā€¦ā€ Lucifer rubbed his forehead, closing his eyes. ā€œI justā€¦ I couldnā€™t think straight. After he told us what we have to doā€¦ā€Ā
Michael frowned, his gaze leaving his brother as he looked out at the streets of Heaven.Ā
ā€œWhat part, exactlyā€¦?ā€
ā€œTheā€¦ā€ Lucifer paused. ā€œThe killing part.ā€ He muttered. ā€œMichael,ā€ He turned to him, a heavy, sad frown on his face. ā€œWe arenā€™t built to kill. We were made to protect Heavenā€¦ Not kill innocent souls.ā€
ā€œWould they really be innocent thoughā€¦?ā€ Michael asked. ā€œYou donā€™t really know what theseā€¦ Demons did to get down there..ā€Ā
Lucifer bit the inside of his cheek, turning his gaze out to Heaven as well. It was beautiful, peaceful and looked so full of life. So full of happiness and joy.Ā
ā€œI donā€™tā€¦ understand why it has to be us though. Why canā€™t the army take care of it themselvesā€¦? And,ā€ Lucifer scooted away from Michael. ā€œThisā€¦ Entire plan thing? Itā€™s been going on since we were children?ā€
ā€œYouā€¦ā€ Michael hesitated. ā€œYou donā€™t rememberā€¦?ā€
ā€œRemember.. What?ā€ Lucifer frowned, watching as Michaelā€™s expression dropped severely. He wasnā€™t one to often show his negative emotions so powerfully, especially out in the open.Ā
ā€œWe were kids when Father brought us down to Hell. And you,ā€ Michael stole a quick glance to his brother. ā€œYou grew attached to a hellborn and it almost hurt you. Father said that it nicked your clothes before Cherubim stepped in.ā€ He explained.Ā
Lucifer frowned, listening to the story. A blurry memory hazed over his mind, but for the longest time, Lucifer thought it was just a dream. A dream he remembered only part of.Ā
ā€œSo Father brought us back to Heaven and assigned the angelic army to go down to Hell once a year, to kill sinners.ā€
Lucifer stared at Michael. Everything he had known about Hell, all of the things he was taught by Sera, by his Father pricked his memory.Ā
ā€œSoā€¦ Why choose us thenā€¦?ā€ Michael shrugged in response.Ā
ā€œIā€™m not sureā€¦ But, Luci,ā€ He placed a hand against the youngerā€™s shoulder. ā€œWe have to do thisā€¦ For Father, for our brothers.ā€ He muttered.Ā
ā€œWhat if I donā€™t want to..?ā€
ā€œDonā€™t say thatā€¦ā€ Michael frowned, wrapping an arm around his brotherā€™s shoulders. ā€œDonā€™t say thatā€¦ā€ He muttered, putting his head against Luciferā€™s. ā€œWe have to protect Heaven, and if not for Heaven, do it to protect Gabriel. Uriel. Raphael, and Joel. For Emily.ā€ He muttered.Ā
Lucifer frowned, looking at the golden steps that led up to Godā€™s building, his office. He took a small deep breath as he closed his eyes. For his brothers. For Emily.Ā
ā€œFineā€¦ But only for them.ā€ He said, looking at Michael. ā€œAnd I wonā€™t kill anyone. I canā€™t..ā€
ā€œThatā€™s fine,ā€ Michael let go of his brother, giving him a small smile. ā€œThatā€™s fine, you donā€™t have to.ā€ He stood from the steps, holding out his hand. Lucifer hesitated, but took Michaelā€™s hand and was pulled to his feet.Ā
ā€œWe shouldā€¦ Tell Father.ā€Ā
ā€œYeahā€¦ I guess we should.ā€Ā
Michael rubbed Luciferā€™s back before he headed back up the steps. Lucifer watched him go, only for a heavy sigh to leave his lips as he begrudgingly followed Michael back inside the building.Ā
The light didnā€™t blind him as much as it had their first time entering Godā€™s office. The white colours seemed a little grey in his eyes now, but he sat down while Michael stood beside him.Ā
ā€œWeā€™ll do it.ā€ He said, resting a hand against Luciferā€™s shoulder. ā€œWeā€™ll protect the angelic portal between the realms.ā€Ā
ā€œBut I wonā€™t kill anyone.ā€ Lucifer met his fatherā€™s eyes. ā€œI wonā€™t do it.ā€Ā
Watching between the two of them, God leaned back in his seat, his arms crossing over his chest. He looked at Michael, a son destined to prove his worth. And he looked at Lucifer, perhaps a son destined to struggle, but he could see great things from the boy.Ā
ā€œVery well then,ā€ He smiled, leaning forward. ā€œStarting tomorrow, the two of you will be training with the Angelic army.ā€Ā
Luciferā€™s jaw tightened as he stole a glance up at Michael. The older gave God a firm nod, before he looked down at his brother. A gentle squeeze of his shoulder and the two boys left Godā€™s office. Michael, beginning to wonder what this could mean for their next steps, while Lucifer contemplated the agreement, contemplated his own father.Ā
~~~~
The training platform wasnā€™t at all what Lucifer was expecting. Human souls, winners that were a part of the Angelic army, trained with their weapons. They attacked fake dolls dressed as demons from Hell. Others tested their speed, their dodging abilities against each other.Ā
But stood to the side, two elder angels watched among their crew. Watched the training ensue as they awaited for the next extermination day. Lucifer didnā€™t want to train with angelic weapons. He didnā€™t want to use a spear and practice cutting off a doll's head. He found it grotesque and violent, something Heaven wasnā€™t.Ā
The world around them so foreign to their usual leisure as Michael stole a glance at Lucifer.Ā
ā€œItā€™s gonna be fine.ā€ He encouraged, a smile on his face as he headed over to the two elder angels.Ā
Ā Swallowing hard, Lucifer could already sense the unwelcome feeling in the air that surrounded the exorcists.Ā
ā€œGood morning Raguel, Zadkiel.ā€ Michael bowed to the two of them, greeting them with honor. Slowly, Lucifer mimicked his brother, bowing as well.Ā
ā€œGood morning Michael, Lucifer.ā€ Raguel smiled, crossing his arms over his chest. ā€œYour father told us that youā€™d be joining us. Are you excited?ā€Ā
ā€œExcited is an overstatementā€¦ā€ Lucifer muttered, crossing his arms over his chest as he looked out at the training angels.Ā
ā€œLuciferā€¦ā€ Michael frowned, looking at his younger brother.Ā
ā€œNo, itā€™s okay.ā€ Raguel held up a hand. ā€œAt the start of it all, some donā€™t think itā€™s worth it, but once you see whatā€™s really down there, youā€™ll know why we train like this.ā€Ā
ā€œOf course.ā€
ā€œThe two of you will be guarding the portal, will you not?ā€ Zadkiel asked, looking among the two of them.Ā
ā€œUh, yes sir.ā€ Michael said, standing tall.Ā
ā€œGood. Your first order of training will be under Alya and Dina. Theyā€™re some of our strongest protectors. I wish both of you good luck and train well. Without the proper protection, you could get killed.ā€ Zadkiel explained.Ā
ā€œWoah, harsh to drop the bomb.ā€ Raguel said, nudging the taller angel next to him.Ā
ā€œAlya and Dinaā€¦ā€ Michael repeated, looking among the angels. He spotted the two of them as they sat together to enjoy some snacks while they awaited the archangels. ā€œCome on Lucifer.ā€ Michael gently grabbed Luciferā€™s arm as he dragged him over to the two of them.Ā
Lucifer followed, unable to say no to his older brother. He and Michael were already protectors, he didnā€™t see the point in training in their specialized skill. Perhaps he was just being stubborn, but he didnā€™t like the idea of it.Ā
ā€œDina? Alya?ā€ Michael approached the two girls, who immediately stood from their spots.Ā
ā€œArchangel Michael,ā€ Alya bowed to him. ā€œArchangel Lucifer, itā€™s a pleasure to finally meet you.ā€Ā
Lucifer bowed his head back in habit.Ā
ā€œYou as well. Zadkiel says youā€™re to train us in protection?ā€Ā
ā€œYes,ā€ Dina put her hands on her hips. ā€œWelcome to protection training 101.ā€ She said, ā€œThroughout this section, you will learn how to protect yourself from an attack. Youā€™ll learn to dodge, cast magic to protect the portal and be vigilant.ā€Ā
ā€œMr. Lucifer sir,ā€ Alya headed over to Lucifer, holding out her hand. Lucifer blinked for a second. No one in Heaven had ever called Lucifer sir. Was it really because he was an archangel?Ā
He took her hand as she led him over to a few machines set up, while Dina grabbed a hold of Michael and began to tell him about the specific magic casts he would need to practice.Ā
ā€œUm,ā€ Alya smiled up at him. ā€œThis machine is an easy level for dodging. Itā€™ll throw simple, small objects at you and using your wings and your powers, you will go ahead and dodge them the best you can.ā€
ā€œIs there likeā€¦ a limit?ā€ He asked, looking down at her.Ā
ā€œWell, um, Lute, our strongest fighter, she can dodge up to 300 items without getting hit once.ā€ She explained, heading over to the machine. Lucifer smirked, looking at it as he took off his jacket. His blue and white wings flushed out, all six of them as he lifted from the ground.Ā
ā€œI can beat that.ā€Ā
ā€œSir-ā€
ā€œTrust me,ā€ Lucifer winked at her. ā€œI can beat it.ā€Ā
~~~~
The days went on and on, days of heavy training to light training. Some days were simply spent in classes with Raguel and Zadkiel, just to understand the differences between Heaven and Hell. To realize how dangerous the underworld really was. During those days, Lucifer didnā€™t pay much attention. He ended up doodling little designs for the small ducks heā€™d been working on. He wanted to give one to Raguel and Zadkiel. He wanted to give one to Alya and Dina for their gracious help. Maybe even make one for Michael if he had the time.Ā
But, as the two brothers trained, their days started to mix with each other, unable to determine what day it was, what they had learned. As a matter of fact, the two brothers practiced with each other more than anything.Ā
A few good laughs here and there when Michael would get hit by some random object thrown at him, or a good laugh when luciferā€™s magic failed and exploded fireworks into his face. Despite training for something horrible in Luciferā€™s mind, he began to have fun with it.Ā
Maybe it helped that Michael was with him. The older brother was always there to shelter Lucifer, to protect him and keep him happy. And Lucifer did the same to Michael. The two of them, even as now, had gotten closer than they ever were before.Ā
ā€œLucifer, Michael.ā€ Zadkiel held his hands behind his back as he walked back and forth in front of the two brothers. ā€œNow that your training for protection is nearly done, you need to understand the basic principles of our weapons. The exorcists wield angelic spears. These spears are used to fight the demons that come into their paths.ā€ He explained.Ā
Lucifer watched Zadkiel, before stealing a glance at Michael. The blonde was always so invested in learning. He read big fat books when he was a pre-teen, and even now he looked more intrigued in learning about weaponry than Lucifer had ever seen him.Ā
ā€œThe two of you will be wielding the swords of God. Two swords crafted by Godā€™s hands against the stones from the rocky mountains on Earth. The swords are heavy, crafted from Angelic metals and pure gold. These swords are to do double the damage against a demon if one approaches.ā€ Zadkiel used his magic as two swords conjured in front of them, yet, only depicted in imagery.Ā
ā€œThese will be your weapons of choice. No other. Your father has seen to it that I personally give you the training with the weapons. But my only concern,ā€ He paused, looking at the two brothers. ā€œAre you both capable of doing it?ā€
ā€œDoingā€¦? What?ā€ Michael asked.Ā
ā€œKilling a demon.ā€
ā€œYour training shows that youā€™re ready to protect the portal between worlds,ā€ Raguel began. ā€œBut what comes with the swords, comes the trouble and role of the job. Youā€™re not just there to sit there and look pretty. Youā€™re there to keep demons in check. Keep them from getting close, even if they attempt.ā€ He said.Ā
Luciferā€™s jaw tightened. He was fine if he didnā€™t have to wield a weapon. He was fine using his magic to protect the portal and his brother. But the moment the weapons got involved, something felt like it was crawling beneath his skin. A foreign uneasiness that almost twisted his stomach.Ā
ā€œI think weā€™re ready.ā€ Michael spoke, stealing a glance at Lucifer. ā€œDonā€™t you?ā€Ā
Lucifer swallowed hard as he looked at his brother. He wanted to say no, back down and just say he wanted to protect and not fight, but he had no other choice.Ā
ā€œYeah.ā€
ā€œVery good then.ā€ Zadkiel stood straight. ā€œThe two of you will meet me at the ring tomorrow at 9am sharp. We will spend the day getting used to the weight of the weapon, stance with the weapon and how to fight with it. This will be what you train for in the next upcoming months.ā€
ā€œExtermination day is two months away. If you can show us that youā€™re ready a week before weā€™re to go down, then you will be joining the exorcists.ā€ Raguel explained, putting his hands behind his back.Ā
ā€œYou may leave,ā€ Zadkiel said, gesturing to the two of them. Michael was quick to get up from his seat, looking at Lucifer as he dragged himself out of his own seat and followed Michael into the hallway.Ā
ā€œWhat?ā€ Michael looked at him.Ā
ā€œNothing.ā€ Lucifer shoved his hands in his pockets as he headed throughout the building. Michael huffed, following the younger brother.Ā
ā€œItā€™s not nothing, somethingā€™s on your mind. You can tell meā€¦ā€ Michael insisted, walking alongside Lucifer. The younger stopped in his tracks, looking at Michael with concerned eyes.Ā
ā€œYou may be okay with fighting the demons and all that, but I donā€™t want to. Iā€™m fine with just hanging in the air and keeping the portal safe.ā€
ā€œFather said you donā€™t have to fight.ā€ Michael reminded him. ā€œItā€™s just precaution, Luciā€¦ What if something happens, and something jumps up and tries to hurt you? And what if Iā€™m not there? What happens then? Are you just gonna accept death? Or are you gonna fight to protect yourself?ā€ He asked.Ā
Lucifer stayed silent. He wanted to banter back with Michael, but he had a point.Ā
ā€œIā€™ve seen you. Youā€™re good at this. You know how to dodge well, your magicā€™s improved significantly. This is the last thing, and heck, you donā€™t even have to use it. Just have it on you, thatā€™s all I ask.ā€ Michael placed a hand against his chest. ā€œPlease?ā€
Lucifer sighed, but gave a small nod.Ā
ā€œFineā€¦ā€Ā
Michael smiled at him, before nudging him.Ā
ā€œThatā€™s my brother. Come on, letā€™s go practice some more before we head home.ā€ Michael headed down the hall to the doors that opened to the platforms. Lucifer paused, watching the doors banter back and forth, the light pinks, purples and oranges decorating the sky fading behind stained glass windows.Ā
He fiddled with the helm of his shirt before he followed after Michael.Ā
~~~~
Sitting among the bleachers, some of the exorcists sat together, eating meals while they chatted away about the randomest of things. Yet, one thing was definitely the subject of the topic. The archangels.Ā
None of the exorcists really minded them being there, but some hated the idea. They couldnā€™t go about their day, doing the things they normally did, knowing that two of Godā€™s favourites were practicing alongside them.Ā
They couldnā€™t bash the idea of Archangels in battle. They couldnā€™t hate on demons without thinking of Luciferā€™s angry gaze. Who knew archangels were so uptight?
ā€œWhat do you know about ā€˜em, Alya?ā€ One of the exorcists asked, before digging into a cheeseburger.Ā
ā€œUm, not much honestly.ā€ She replied, her helmet in her lap as she watched the brothers practice with the dodge machines. ā€œI know Michaelā€™s actually a sweetheart. Heā€™s not that scary, and Lucifer?ā€ She smiled. ā€œHeā€™s so full of life, itā€™s like heā€™s a human soul.ā€
ā€œWoah,ā€ Dina held up her hands. ā€œCalm down there girlie,ā€ She smiled, nudging her. ā€œHeā€™s just an archangel.ā€
ā€œYet they hold such annoying power over all of us.ā€ A girl spoke, glaring down at the two brothers. Her white hair cut short, her gold eyes shooting daggers at the brothers.Ā
ā€œLute,ā€ Dina looked up at her. ā€œYou canā€™t judge ā€˜em. Theyā€™re just born that way, with power.ā€
ā€œWith seniority.ā€ Lute spat, sighing as she stood from her spot. ā€œThey think they can just walk in here and take our jobs? The two of you were doing fine in keeping the portal safe. So why do we need these two dumbasses to help?ā€Ā
The exorcists muttered among each other, looking down at the two brothers.Ā
ā€œMichael!!ā€ Lucifer cheered. ā€œDid you see that?!ā€ Lucifer looked over at his brother. ā€œ429 baby!!ā€ Lucifer used his magic, gold fireworks booming in the sky. Michael laughed, clapping to celebrate his brother's victory.
ā€œDid you beat the record??ā€Ā
ā€œFor the second time!ā€ Lucifer said, smiling at his brother. ā€œI told you I could do it!ā€
ā€œOf course,ā€ Michael rolled his eyes.Ā
Lute watched them, her hands forming into fists as her teeth gritted together.Ā
ā€œThose lowlife sons of a bitches have it coming.ā€
ā€œLute, calm down.ā€ Alya frowned. ā€œItā€™s just a number-ā€
ā€œA number my ass!! I worked years to perfect my 300 goal and he just comes in here and beats it without even trying?ā€
ā€œHeā€™s an archangelā€¦ā€ Dina muttered. Lute huffed.Ā
ā€œI hate the Hierarchy.ā€

2024 media thread part JANUARY :D
1st January: Super Mario Bros. Movie
finally got around to watching this, and okay, yeah- it was a lot better than i expected. a good time! really fun to watch! it definitely felt like actual fans worked on it, or at the very least, that Nintendo kept a real close eye during production. loooved the little nods to canon; when Pauline showed up, i literally paused to excitedly tell my mom about who that was, haha. also LOVED the difference uses of power ups!! tanuki suit AND cat suit my beloved :]
Bowser was definitely the high point, like!! that IS my little guy!! Jack Black did SUCH a good job, and man. the ANIMATION. the bits where he got all snarly was SO good. would have loved to watch those on the big screen. Luigi was also very Luigi, which i always appreciate. Mario was... eh? not bad! Chris Pine did an okay job, and while i would have preferred something more, it was... fine. and Donkey Kong was a whole lot of fun, actually? tempted to check out his games, because i did really like him
meanwhile, my BIG BIG complaint, is Peach. like, holy fuck. they absolutely butchered my girl! like, yes- as characters, none of them have a lot of personality to work with, but they're archetypes. you're supposed to push within the archetypes- they even did this with Mario. but they just- they completely abandoned who Peach is, as a character. straight up just wrote Daisy instead, which is. really frustrating! and i dislike it A LOT, because there is so much you can do with Peach as a character, and they didn't even try
but otherwise- fun movie! could have been so much worse!
4th January: Outpath
really relaxing and chill game, where you basically just run around collecting resources, upgrading stuff, and unlocking more island. definitely one of those 'put on some music and zone out for a bit' games. that is not a negative
really liked the graphics, and it was fun to just- run around? you get more movement upgrades as you go along, and it actually plays really nicely. also some tasty environmental sounds
i'm not a 100% done with it yet, but i hit the end credits, so. not sure i'll get all the achievements, but i do intent to go back and clean up some loose ends. also really like how it incorporates some idle elements, like you still getting credits(/money) while being offline. makes it more rewarding to open it up and vibe for a bit
i do think there was an.. attempt? at some kind of story, but i entirely missed it, so i guess that's my only real critic. it was just a fun chill game to sink like, 25 hours into lol
9th January: Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight
i've had this game in my library for literally who knows how long, and it's one i've always been aware of, since it was really big back in the day, and oh my god. oh my god, why did i not play this sooner?
it's rather short, took me around 7 hours, but it just- it nails what it wants to be, this tough little game with so much moodiness and tragedy, and i'm so enamoured. i tried playing the original one before this, but it wasn't quite hitting, but man. this one just. it hit so fucking good
there's so many layers here, so many unspoken little details. so so much tragedy you could really dig your fingers into, and as a Tragedy Enjoyer, ooooh it hits good
i'm considering either replaying it myself, or watching a LP and then writing some fic, because there is a little thing hiding here, something i want to put words to. it's good, can't wait to check out the rest, and the upcoming sequel/finale. also, the game is gorgeous
18th January: Switch OVA
so Switch is a two episode long 'adaptation' of a manga, and while it very much just drops you into the middle of the plot, it- works? like, i personally wasn't missing anything, and the case they chose to adapt works really well as a teaser for the manga, because i did leave it considering checking out the manga, and while the whole thing isn't anything to write home about, i did enjoy myself
(i also watched the whole thing on my phone, curled up in bed, so that did maybe increase my enjoyment. it was cozy! what can i say!)
funnily enough, i did walk into this thinking it was a yaoi, and while i don't think it is, there really was nothing to disprove me of this assumption. there's literally a moment where protag guy gets told 'he likes' the other protag guy, and he bLUSHES. LIKE. STRAIGHT OUT OF A YAOI FR FR
all in all, it was honestly just a really cozy time. it wasn't long enough to lose my interest, and there was enough in it to keep it- and i really like the design of the red haired guy! very simple, but really appealing too. i genuinely might check out the manga, my interest is definitely piqued

WHAT IS THE LOONAVERSE? PART 2 ā€“ THE NARRATIVE DEVICES
LOONA is special among K-pop for its immersive storyline. These girls are not just k-pop idols performing a song, they also perform a story and that story is what we call the Loonaverse.
So, what is the Loonaverse? In a few words: The world and story that LOONA inhabits.
Yeah. Duh. But what is it?
Wellā€¦ itā€™s complicated.
The Loonaverse is a fictitious story that borrows elements from real science and fantasy to build its world but also uses allegories, metaphors, allusions and other literary devices to tell its story. Our job as spectators (and specifically us theorizers) is to look beyond those devices to understand the message they are trying to send. In this post Iā€™ll attempt to explain the numerous literary devices used to narrate the story of the Loonaverse.
Tumblr media
So, these 2 things are LAW:
Each girl has two conflicts: an external one and an internal one.
The LOONAVERSE story is one of fantasy and mystery.
INTERNAL CONFLICT VS EXTRNAL CONFLICT
Or as I like to call it: UNIT vs SOLO
Iā€™ve explained how the girls are trapped in a time loop and how escaping it was their overarching goal. This is the external conflict of the Loonaverse. The progression of this storyline is seen mainly in the Sub-Unit MVs and LOONA MVs but also in some teasers and other videos like Cinema Theory. The conflict is external because: 1) It comes from the outside. 2) The characters not have power against it, at least not at the beginning. 3) The conflict has effect over multiple people.
Alsoā€¦
Every character has an internal conflict. A personal story. Each girl perceives the world differently and that changes the way they act and interact with each other. It is internal because: 1) It comes from within the person. 2) They themselves may be the cause for the conflict. 3) The conflict has effect on only one person: themselves. This Internal conflict is presented to us in the Solo MVs. Every solo MV is a window to the characterā€™s mind. While the solo MVs are tangentially related to the main external conflict, they mostly focus on the internal conflict of the character.
External and Internal conflicts often mix and interlace each other to create a wider story. We will see how the external conflict fuels the internal conflicts of the girls and how their internal conflicts will shape the way they act towards solving the external conflict.
Tumblr media
FANTASY AND MYSTERY
What is fantasy? The genre of fantasy is described as a story based in a world completely separate from our own. It usually features elements or magical/supernatural forces that do not exist on our own world. It is not tied to reality of science.
Wait a minute. You just spent an entire post explaining the science of the Loonaverse. You canā€™t call it fantasy now. Well yes, yes I can. Since most of the scientific elements I explained are theoretical, unproved in our world but in the world of LOONA they are a reality, a scientific reality. A reality that differs from our own, and thus a fantasy to us. But regardless of that the reason I call the Loonaverse a fantasy is because of the themes it explores.
Fantasy is a broad genre, it is one of the oldest literary genres, being found in old myths. Some of the themes often found in fantasy stories include: tradition vs. change, the individual vs. society, man vs. nature, coming of age, betrayal, epic journeys, etc. All of these themes are very present in the Loonaverse. But Iā€™ll delve into each one as we encounter them.
Tumblr media
What is Mystery? The mystery genre is a type of fiction in which a person (usually a detective) solves a crime. The purpose is to solve a puzzle and to create a feeling of resolution with the audience. Some elements of a mystery include: the Crime that needs solving, the use of suspense, use of figures of speech, the detective having inference gaps, the suspects motives are examined in the story, the characters usually get in danger while investigating, plus these:
Red herring. something that misleads or distracts from a relevant or important question and leads the audience to a false answer.
Suspense. Intense feeling that an audience goes through while waiting for the outcome of certain events.
Foreshadowing. A literary device that hints at information that will become relevant later on.
I just though you should know these definitions.
In the Loonaverse, the ā€œcrimeā€ is the time loop itself, and the mystery is finding a way to break it. Or so we think. In reality, the ā€œHow do we break the loop?ā€ question is solved rather easily. But can we really call this a mystery if the main question is already answered? Yes! It may no be a mystery story for the characters themselves but because BlockBerry uses various mystery genre tropes while telling the story, it is a mystery TO THE AUDIENCE.
Thatā€™s right! WE are the detectives!
In a classical mystery, the detective examines all clues, motives, and possible alibis, for each suspect, or in our case, each character. The same way we analyze every MV, every interaction, every possible clue to where and when everything is happening.
The Loonaverse differs from a classic ā€˜Who done it?ā€™ by establishing that no suspect is actually guilty. The crime IS the loop, but no girl is responsible for it (or so we think). Our job as detectives is not to figure out who is doing this but to explain how and establish an timeline of events that shed a light to what really happened. In that sense, our job resembles more closely a real crime investigation than a mystery novel.
Tumblr media
LITERARY DEVICES
There are many literary devices an author can use to tell its story. Too many to cover them all in here, so Iā€™ll focus on the most recurrent ones in the Loonaverse:
Allusion. Referring to a subject matter such as a place, event, or literary work by way of a passing reference.
Archetype. Reference to a concept, a person or an object that has served as a prototype of its kind and is the original idea that has come to be used over and over again.
Faulty Parallelism. the practice placing together similarly structure related phrases, words or clauses but where one fails to follow this parallel structure.
Juxtaposition. The author places a person, concept, place, idea or theme parallel to another
Metaphor. A meaning or identity ascribed to one subject by way of another. One subject is implied to be another so as to draw a comparison between their similarities and shared traits.
Motif. Any element, subject, idea or concept that is constantly present through the entire body of literature.
Symbol. Using an object or action that means something more than its literal meaning, they contain several layers of meaning, often concealed at first sight.
Genre. Classification of a literary work by its form, content, and style.
Some other literary devices worthy of your private investigation are: Negative Capability, Point of View, DoppelgƤnger, Flashback, Caesura, Stream of Consciousness, Periodic Structure, THEME, Analogy.
Tumblr media
AboutĀ Genre:
Genres are important because they give a story structure. They help an author tell the story in a way that makes it simple for the audience to understand what kind of story is being told. The classic genres of literature are Poetry, Drama and Prose. Some scholars include Fiction and Non-fiction.Ā
In film there are a variety of accepted genres: Comedy, Tragedy, Horror, Action, Fantasy, Drama, Historical, etc. Plus a bunch of subgenres like Contemporary Fantasy, Spy Film, Slapstick Comedy, Psychological Thriller, etc. What defines a genre is the use of similar techniques and tropes like color, editing, themes, character archetypes, etc.Ā
I point this out because the Loonaverse uses many genres to tell its story. Sure, the main story is a fantasy/mystery but every MV or Teaser has its own genre (especially the solo MVs). So, when I point out later that Kiss Later is a romantic comedy or that One & Only is a gothic melodrama, this is what I mean.
Tumblr media
TLDR:
The Loonaverse is the world and story that LOONA inhabits. It borrows form real life science and fantasy elements to better tell its story. Each girl has an external conflict (escaping the loop) and an internal conflict (portrayed in the solo MVs). Both conflicts interlace to tell the story. The Loonaverse is a story of Fantasy because it takes place in a different world from ours and it is a Mystery because it is told using various mystery tropes. The story uses multiple literary and visual devices to tell itā€™s story and fuel the mystery.
Tumblr media
REMEMBER: This is all my interpretation. My way of comprehending and analyzing the story. You donā€™t have to agree with everything. I encourage you to form your own theories. Remember: every theory is correct.
After all that you may be wondering what the story even is. And weā€™ll finally be getting to that. While I have my own interpretation of the timeline, themes and who did what. I think itā€™s more fun to slowly explore every brick instead of just summarizing it in one (incredibly long) post. Iā€™ll do that much, much, much later. The journey will be just as interesting as the destination. I hope youā€™re in for the ride.
Letā€™s get to the real deal: The MVs. Iā€™m going in chronological order so letā€™s start with girl No. 1!
Tumblr media
Next: The bright pink bunny of LOONA: HeeJinā€™s ViViD.

VOCALOID LEGENDS - 2011 Part 2
#66 - Hitobashira Alice (YugamiP) [MEIKO, KAITO, Miku, Rin, Len]
Achievement Date: 11-04-30 Upload Date: 08-04-30
About a bunch of Alice and the gruesome feat they meet. My favorite interpretation is a satirical one, giving us a rough history of Crypton VOCALOID at the time. MEIKO paves the wave, but ultimately doesnā€™t get sold. KAITO gets embarrassed, but eventually finds newfound fame. Miku is the queen that constantly worries about her end, and Rin/Len was an experiment that worked well, but was ultimately beaten out by Miku. This actually might be MEIKOā€™s first song on this list, isnā€™t it? Huh. Thatā€™s interesting.
#67 - Fireā—ŽFlower (halyosy) [Kagamine Len]
Achievement Date: 11-05-03, Upload Date: 08-08-02
Good old piano rock from halyosy. It just screams a happy anime ED and I just love it. Still a classic song that is covered to this day. A little bit of bittersweetness in the ending not only is consistent with other halyosy but adds so much to the anime ED vibe. The tuning is not the best and the vocal layer seems floating above, but the song is so good. Perhaps the reason why the song is more well-covered than most songs here.
#68 - Antichlorobenzene (OwataP) [Kagamine Rin]
Achievement Date: 11-05-17 Upload Date: 10-09-19
The song OwataP wrote when Paradichlorobenzene reached a million views. Once again, itā€™s about internet bullying, this time gone bad, as the song becomes even more latin than beforeā€¦ it also sounds infernal, which I guess is the point. The addition of Paradichlorobenzene in that bridge adds to the supposed tragedy of the song. For the end of a series, itā€™s a pretty dark one. Fitting in this climate, I guess.
#69 - ACUTE (KuroUsa-P) [Miku, Luka, KAITO]
Achievement Date: 11-05-26 Upload Date: 09-08-21
Another dramatic song from KuroUsa-P detailing a complicated relationship where Miku likes KAITO but KAITO likes Luka, who is Mikuā€™s friend. Miku sees KAITO confessing to Luka and gets blood-hungry and stabs KAITO and then herself. Yeah, very dramatic, the song is dramatic, itā€™s a very typical fare from KuroUsa-P, which is strange his most famous song and then one more song is definitely much more plainer than this.
#70 - IMITATION BLACK (natsuP) [KAITO, Len, Gakupo]
Achievement Date: 11-05-31 Upload Date: 09-06-01
Itā€™s a Visual Kei boy band song from natsuP, one of the earliest women VOCALOID producers along with OSTER project. This is actually a bit removed from her usual work, but itā€™s a good adaptation of the style. Definitely put the boy band trio, called Banananice, on the map and inspired many more songs with the same group.
#71 - Unhappy Refrain (wowaka) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 11-06-19 Upload Date: 11-05-02
wowakaā€™s last song before he went on an extended hiatus. While the verse and melody is your typical wowaka but the instrumentation refers to songs like Rolling Girl. Reference to the older songs hints at this song as a reflection of his influence in VOCALOID community, which is further heightened with his last song, and note that they both have a heart shape in the PV. Telecaster B-Boy could be a reference to the initial line here, and maybe is a response as one who went through a renaissance?
#72 - Once Upon on Me (DECO*27) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 11-06-21 Upload Date: 10-11-25
I think a DECO*27 song that people know and love but doesnā€™t immediately feel like DECO*27 songs, although itā€™s definitely an Ai Kotoba song. (DECO*27 only has three songs but they are really good songs.) I think this DECO*27ā€™s most bittersweet song, but emphasis on the sweet side, which is rare for this type of music.Ā
#73 - Nyanyanyanyanyanyanya! (daniwell) [Hatsune Miku]
Achievement Date: 11-06-21 Upload Date: 10-07-25
Of course now known as Nyan Cat, although thatā€™s actually a UTAU cover. Daniwell is actually quite storied and you should listen to his later songs because they are quite something, an evolution of songs like this. Unlike the UTAU cover, the Miku is lighter which gives a lighter feeling which he carries in his later songs. I think what makes the song tick is that wide bass giving that wide feeling in which the airy Miku floats.

pairing: mark(got7) x reader
genre: fluff for the birthday boyĀ šŸ„³
word count: 4.3k
warnings: mature language
When Mark had been dating your roommate, you barely spared him a second glance.
Being a college undergraduate meant that you had plenty of exams and coursework to worry about without having to keep track of who Ingrid was ā€œdatingā€ this month. The two of you got along as well as two individuals who kept to themselves could get along. She was rarely home, and when she was, sheā€™d spare you the awkward introduction to her new fling by quickly ushering him into her room. You always told yourself that your living situation couldā€™ve been way worse, so you let Ingridā€™s business proceed without much of a complaint.
You couldnā€™t even remember how long the two lasted, given the amount of fuckboys that had walked through her door. It was a wonder that you could even recall his name, to be frank. Perhaps he left some semblance of an impression because of the way he never walked around like he owned the place like most of Ingridā€™s conquests. There were times youā€™d find an unknown shirt hanging haphazardly across the couch or one of your pudding cups gone missing from the fridge. Despite these occurrences, you disliked confrontation, so you chose to endure rather than address your grievances. While Ingrid had been with Mark, you remember being considerably more comfortable in your own residence.
If someone had told you that youā€™d be head over heels in love with Mark Tuan only a month after your roommate ended things with him, youā€™d probably have a good laugh. You were more invested in the comebacks of the boy groups you loved than some boy your roommate, of all people, had once been with. Besides, you were a commitment-seeking gal, and anyone that pursued your roommate was definitely not expecting anything long-term.
The suggestion that you would grow attracted to such a guy would have seemed ludicrous. Yet maybe this is why the saying ā€œnot everything is as it seemsā€ exists.
The whole ordeal began relatively innocuously. You were waiting on your hazelnut latte at the universityā€™s central coffee shop, preparing to head to the library for some much-needed studying. Midterms were around the corner, and you had spent one too many days dozing off in lectures to feel prepared. It seemed that most of the student population had the same idea as you, since the cafĆ© was bustling for a Wednesday afternoon. You tried your best to stay out of everyoneā€™s way, focusing instead on checking the time on your cell phone and planning out your schedule for the rest of the day.
When you finally have your order in your hands, you take a small sip before heading for the exit. Right when that happens, a form in your periphery suddenly rushes in and knocks the hot coffee out of your grasp. Thankfully, or as much thanks as you could offer in such a tragedy, most of the drink cascades on the tiled floor. Only a little of your latte scalds your hand and paints your white sweater with brown polka dots. The disappointment you feel about losing your drink is quickly overshadowed by embarrassment when people start staring and the painful burning blossoms across the back of your hand.
ā€œShit, Iā€™m so sorry.ā€
Your offender rushes to grab some napkins, immediately going to work on wiping the floor. As his head is lowered, you try to think of a smart response. Just as you were about to give the rude kid a piece of your mind, he looks up and the words dry up on your tongue.
ā€œY/N?ā€
ā€œMark?ā€ you finally manage, surprised he even remembered who you were.
He quickly hands you a napkin, looking even more apologetic before responding, ā€œHere, for your hand and sweaterā€¦Iā€™m so sorry I wasnā€™t looking where I was going.ā€
ā€œItā€™s fine,ā€ you quickly reassure, doing your best to clean yourself up. The coffee will likely stain your sweater at this rate, so you decide to simply study at your apartment instead so you can change into new clothes.
This certainly puts a wrench into your plans, doesnā€™t it?
ā€œLet me buy you another coffee. A new sweater too, it looks like,ā€ he gives you a timidly awkward smile, as if he wasnā€™t sure if he was allowed to do so.
You offer him a quick rise of the corners of your lips, but not much else. It still felt a little shocking and disappointing to be in such a predicament, and you sure as hell didnā€™t want Ingridā€™s ex to be owing you any favors.
ā€œAs I said, itā€™s fine. Really. This was an old sweater anyways,ā€ you grab the hem as you speak, before trying to dodge around him to leave.
When he quickly blocks your attempt to escape, you realize the guyā€™s reflexes are quite remarkable. However, you wanted to be rid of this awkward situation as soon as possible, so his actions made you purse your lips together in discontent.
ā€œIā€™m really sorry, Y/N. This really wasnā€™t the way Iā€™d imagine bumping into you again. Literally I guess,ā€ he shyly runs his hand through his hair, which is now surprisingly dyed blonde. You knew something about him was different, but now you pinpoint it as his hair. He used to wear his natural dark brown locks when he was with Ingrid, so the change catches you off guard. It suits him well though, the way it easily brightens his whole demeanor.
ā€œDonā€™t worry about it, it happens,ā€ you tuck your hand into your pocket and continue, ā€œLook Iā€™ve really gotta go, I have midterms to study for.ā€
He promises you that heā€™ll pay you back as you rush out the door. Ā
It seems that Mark is a man of his word, because the next day, you find a mysterious package addressed to you waiting outside the door. With no shipping label and your name scrawled on the top of the box, your survival instincts tell you that opening it on the living room floor was probably the last thing you shouldā€™ve done. However, that happened to be exactly what you did.
The first thing you notice was a small note laying atop a variety of items that were wrapped up with layers of navy-colored tissue paper. Reading through the note causes a bright flush to dash across your cheekbones, as you realize that the suspicious package was from Mark.
Ingridā€™s Mark.
You began to slowly examine the rest of the contents with less zeal, hoping that your roommate wouldnā€™t pop out of a corner and accuse you of having something with her old flame. The neatly-folded white sweater you discovered inside was very similar to what you previously wore before the coffee incident. However, the material was definitely a lot nicer and you spent a good two minutes just stroking the material with your fingers. His attention to detail regarding what you had worn was crazy good, leaving you more than a little impressed.
Moving forward, you found a package of instant coffeeā€”hazelnut-flavored to be exact. You grinned, realizing that Markā€™s attention to detail really was impeccable. Perhaps anyone couldā€™ve identified the hazelnut syrup in your drink if they spent five minutes wiping it off the floor, but he had gone out of his way to identify the same flavor for you.
It was kinda cute, actually.
As soon as the thought appears, you quickly shake it out of your head. Mark couldnā€™t be cute. He couldnā€™t be anything more than somebody you knew, someone who was paying you back for an inconvenience. He was doing these things because he owed youā€”even if he wasnā€™t exactly obligated to go through such lengths.
Before you could try to evaluate your feelings about the matter, you decide to boil some hot water for the coffee youā€™ve just received. It seems as if the universe is conspiring against you however, as Ingrid emerges from her room right on cue. She gives the box on the floor a quick glance before asking, ā€œDid you order something?ā€
You tuck the thin pack of instant coffee in your pocket next to Markā€™s note. Your fingers tighten across the slip of paper, crushing it into a condensed ball as you spoke.
ā€œYeah. Just some random stuff.ā€
ā€œSweaterā€™s cute,ā€ she remarks, grabbing your gift and running her hands through the material in the same way you had previously. You felt something twist in your heart at her ministrations, as if her touch were contaminating and wearing away what that article of clothing had meant to you.
When she finally leaves after dropping the sweater back in the box, you take the entire box to your room and dump it in a corner of your closet with a slam so you wouldnā€™t have to see it anymore.
It just so happens that that package from a boy with golden locks would signal the start of a series of frequent disruptions within your day-to-day lifestyle.
Fate probably thought it would be funny to let Mark Tuan slip into your life little by little, for a few seconds each day, just to tease you. You were starting to wonder if the boy was stalking you, given how often you would see him at unpredictable intervals. If you went to the library to study, heā€™d be there borrowing a textbook from the front desk. If you wanted to buy a coffee and a pastry for breakfast, heā€™d already be at the cashier paying for his own. If you were rushing to class, slightly late because youā€™d overslept, youā€™d almost crash into him in front of your building.
Heā€™d always give you that cute smile with a little wave of his hand to accompany it.
Your life was a grade A joke at this point.
Midterms had long been over by the time you finally took him up on his offer to hang out one-on-one. You had spent a lot of time and effort into putting him off, making excuses for why not a single day of the week would work for you. When November rolled around, all Mark had to do was raise his lower lip slightly in a pout for you to forget why you were trying so hard to avoid him in the first place. Youā€™d never seen the boy purposefully act in such a cute way to get something, but it definitely made your heart leap in your chest.
Even when he took you to a nice minimalistic cafĆ© to pay for a drink and slice of strawberry cake, he couldnā€™t stop apologizing for bumping into you during midterms season. You had honestly forgotten about it, but the way he talked about how foolish he felt after the whole ordeal made you smile unconsciously. The consideration he had put into making it up to you stressed him out greatly. He couldnā€™t stop wondering whether or not you even liked the sweater. Did it fit you alright? Did you actually like hazelnut lattes, or were you just trying something new out that day?
At this point you couldnā€™t help but laugh. It was such a minute detail, something he really didnā€™t have to worry this much over, but he had worried nonetheless. It was really silly of him, but also showed that maybe he was more than just trying to play with your feelings. Youā€™re about to tell him how you appreciate the thought he put into his apology gift when you realize heā€™s staring at you.
ā€œW-What is it? Is there something on my face?ā€
He shakes out of his reverie and reassures, ā€œNo youā€™re fine. Itā€™s just, I donā€™t think Iā€™ve ever seen you laugh like that.ā€
You blink in confusion before playing with your napkin in embarrassment, ā€œOh uhā€¦Iā€™m not laughing at you. I promise. I just think itā€™s amusing that you cared so much since I never held anything against you in the first place.ā€
Looking back into his soft brown eyes is a mistake, because as soon as you do, your heart starts racing again. He gives you a grin of his own in response, brushing his honey-colored hair back to briefly reveal his forehead. Itā€™s stupid how much that simple gesture makes you want to jump his bones.
ā€œIā€™d say it was a worth it, considering weā€™re basically friends now,ā€ he says, happily taking a sip of his iced americano.
The assertion makes you hesitate briefly as you ask yourself whether or not the two of you were ā€œfriendsā€. You didnā€™t know him all that well yet, but a part of you looked forward to doing so. If anything, the only thing holding you back was that he was Ingridā€™s ex. Sheā€™d probably laugh at you if she found out about your interest in him, and it also meant that you couldnā€™t be sure who Mark really was. Ingrid was notorious for having her pick among fuckboys, and maybe Mark was just one of them who was really good at hiding it.
It seems that he notices your lack of agreement in his earlier sentiment, so he says, ā€œWhat will it take for me to be your friend Y/N?ā€
Using your fork to play with the cream left from your cake slice earlier, you reply, ā€œI donā€™t know.ā€
He doesnā€™t push you further, sensing that your answer probably meant something deeper than what you were able to convey. You feel thankful that he lets the matter go and goes back to giving you an excited puppy-dog look.
ā€œCome on, thereā€™s something I wanna show you.ā€
Turns out ā€œsomethingā€ means the ice cream parlor down the street. As he walks you back to your apartment, you canā€™t help but notice the way he goes to town on that poor cookies nā€™ cream ice cream cone.
ā€œAre you trying to fatten me up with sweets today?ā€ you muse, enjoying your second pastry of the day courtesy to Mark.
ā€œAs if. You look perfect Y/Nā€”nothing a cheat day could do to you.ā€
Itā€™s like the guyā€™s a professional sweet talker too, since he barely bats an eye at the compliment. Not something youā€™re used to, you try your best to not blush obviously at his statement.
God, everything about Mark Tuan was too much for you. He was the epitome of a honey boy.
The walk is fairly interesting, as Mark turned out to be simultaneously a good listener and a good conversation carrier. Heā€™d ask you some questions that you were comfortable answering, listening intently as you shared some details about your studies, your childhood, the things you liked and the things you didnā€™t. You knew he was paying attention because heā€™d always laugh along with you, as you recollected some embarrassing things that had happened to you in the week prior.
By the time you reach your apartment door, youā€™ve forgotten exactly who Mark was supposed to be to you. In his large, tan hoodie with his hands in his pockets, he felt like a nervous boy walking you to your door at the end of a first date.
But could you really expect life to do you any favors just when things started to look up?
The door swings open just as you fumble for your keys, and out steps the last person you wanted to see. Ingrid takes one look at Mark and another at you before a smirk blooms across her bright red lips. Her makeup told you that she was heading to another one of her parties where sheā€™d definitely bring a boy or two home.
ā€œLong time no see,ā€ she addresses Mark first, giving him one of those smiles that probably instigated all those hook-ups she partakes in.
You canā€™t help but feel overshadowed and uncomfortable. It would hurt you beyond measure to see the two flirt with each other right in front of your eyes. You had half the mind to just push past Ingrid and call it a day, but Markā€™s words stop you in your thoughts.
ā€œSure.ā€
Itā€™s curt and simple, lacking the flirtatious tone that Ingrid had injected into her words earlier. If you didnā€™t know any better, it honestly sounded downright boredā€”as if the speaker couldnā€™t wait to get rid of her.
Not giving her much to work with, Ingrid turns towards you instead. ā€œDidnā€™t know youā€™d go for my sloppy seconds Y/N.ā€
Your throat feels dry and you refuse to let yourself expect anything different than the reaction your roommate just gave you. Of course, you expected her to make fun of you. It made sense that she would think of you and Mark being outside the apartment as you picking up a boy she left behind.
But why did it fill you with shame anyways?
ā€œAs if anyone would. I wouldnā€™t get involved with one of your boy toys,ā€ the words leave you mouth with disgust, a tone you couldnā€™t help given the way you were trying so desperately to hide your true feelings. Liking Mark was dangerous and it would mean that Ingrid was right. You werenā€™t involved with him. You couldnā€™t be.
As soon as your statement pierces the air, you sense Markā€™s form stiffen next to you. Immediately, youā€™re filled with regret. Did you need to word things that harshly? Even if you could never get to know him beyond being an acquaintance, he had shown you nothing but kindness. He never tried to get in your pants or act like a certified sleazeball like you were insinuating.
When Mark turns around and leaves the two of you standing in the hallway, itā€™s almost like youā€™re stuck in a wall of honey. The figurative sticky syrup prevents your limbs from making a move after the blonde-haired boy, as youā€™re stuck watching him goā€”watching him hurt over your words. Your throat tightens painfully with the way you try not to cry, fearing that you really ended up harming a boy that didnā€™t deserve the way you just portrayed him.
For the next 11 days according to your count, you donā€™t see Mark again. You were used to finding him leaning around the corner, listening to music on his airpods as he waited for a friendā€™s class to end so they could go play basketball. You had just started to adjust to his daily presence by entertaining the idea that you could start spending time with him. Props to your big mouth and careless words for shattering the prospect to pieces. The sense of guilt you carried was far heavier that the notebooks you lugged to class, and you were hopingā€”no, praying that you would see that bright smile of his to unexpectedly bump into you again.
Maybe meeting him again was the most luck you were fated to have.
As you doodle in the margins of your notebook, wearing the sweater he bought you all those weeks ago, you formulate an apology plan. If you showed him you were sorry, actually really sorry, maybe heā€™d forgive you. It wasnā€™t like you deserved it but seeing him again would sure beat the dreary days you were currently victim to.
Wracking your thoughts for comments Mark had made to you regarding things he liked, you realized he hadnā€™t talked much about himself beyond seemingly having an affinity of cookies nā€™ cream ice cream. He did mention wanting to have a puppy if his apartment landlord would allow it though. If it were possible for you to be more depressed, you realized belatedly that he had spent a good amount of time learning more about you than you did about him.
After your classes, you head out to find something for him. It wasnā€™t like you could afford getting him a puppy, especially since he literally told you he wasnā€™t allowed to have one, so you searched for the next best thing. It took you a few hours of searching to find something that satisfied your expectations, and you set out to spend the rest of the day preparing it for when you would confront Mark yourself.
Standing outside of his apartment at 9 PM on a Friday night was probably one of the dumbest decisions you ever made, and you made a lot of those. He probably didnā€™t even know that you knew he lived here. Ingrid had made you pick her up once from a party one of his roommates hosted when she was still with him, and your trusty sense of direction never really allowed you to forget how to get from one place to another. Even if you wanted to turn around and run home straight away in fear, you forced yourself to knock on the door with three quick thumps.
Praying that it was Mark and not one of his rambunctious roommates who opened the door, your wish actually comes true and youā€™re greeted with the sleepy frame of the honey boy you missed so much over the last two weeks. Heā€™s wearing a thin white tee with grey sweats, as he rubs his eyes as if he canā€™t believe heā€™s actually seeing you at his door.
ā€œY/N? What are you doing here?ā€ he quickly runs a hand through his hair, as if trying to hide the fact that you probably just woke him up.
Did Mark always look this good? Itā€™s actually unfair how pretty he is.
Clearing your throat, you gather up as much courage as you could muster before saying, ā€œYep itā€™s me. Iā€™m here to beg for forgiveness.ā€
ā€œWhat for?ā€ he tilts his head slightly in question before mumbling, ā€œCome inside, itā€™s cold.ā€
He gently rests his hand on your shoulder before urging you inside, and the way he touches you sends a shiver down your spine. Trying not to let any surprised noises escape you, you hurry on into the warmth of the apartment. You look around as you take your shoes off, noticing how surprisingly clean it is despite five boys living here. Perhaps your preconceptions need to be changed.
You shyly trail behind his large figure as he leads you into what appears to be his room. Taking note of the light-up rainbow keyboard and gamer chair with scarlet red highlights, you realize that Mark is one of those boys. You almost laughed aloud imagining him as one of those kids that whined ā€œMom Iā€™m busy!ā€ while playing Call of Duty.
He collapses on his bed unceremoniously with a groan, looking like he was ready to pass out again. Wondering who in their right mind took naps at 9 in the evening, you awkwardly stood in front of him while playing with the ribbon of the gift in your hands.
Opening one eye to look at you, he sits up and pats the corner of the bed closest to him. Wide eyed, you point to yourself before pointing to the same bed corner. He chuckles, and the deep sound sends another shudder through your body.
ā€œYes, Iā€™m talking to you silly,ā€ he grins, as if he had already forgiven you.
Hurriedly, you plop your butt down on the bedsheets and push your apology gift into his hands. He seems confused at first, messing with the sides of the wrapping paper as he examines what you just gave him.
ā€œI got this for you becauseā€¦Iā€™m sorry for the things I said,ā€ you relax, shrinking down in sadness before continuing, ā€œYouā€™re my friend.ā€
He looks at you through your entire confession, hanging onto each word that slips out of your lips. When you stop and slowly look back at him to gauge his response, he gives you a small smile. But itā€™s only when he grabs your nervous hand in his own do you finally let the small sigh hiding inside your chest escape you.
ā€œIā€™m more than just someone Ingrid messed with. You know that, donā€™t you?ā€
Nodding quickly, he laughs as if admiring the great bobblehead impression you were giving. Your hand in his grasp starts to become unbearably warm, as you bite your lip to keep your dangerous thoughts at bay.
ā€œI thought I knew everything that happened. But I donā€™t, and I shouldnā€™t hold that against you,ā€ you admit, slightly losing your train of thought when he begins to gently rub circles into the back of your hand with his thumb.
ā€œDonā€™t hold that against yourself either.ā€
You allow yourself to meet his gaze again, and the amount of warmth and comfort you find there almost breaks you down instantly. Perhaps he knew more than he let on regarding the inner turmoil you struggled with by only thinking of Mark as someone Ingrid once had. But from the first time he ruined your study plans to the moment he bought you various sweets until you verbally forgave him, he was slowly disproving those preconceptions. The amount of understanding he offered you made you feel even worse for referring to him the way you did all those days ago.
All along you thought that Mark was bad for you. Perhaps it was you that truly didnā€™t deserve him.
Momentarily pulling away from your fingers, he begins unwrapping the package you brought along with you. Suddenly nervous, you fiddle with the hem of your petticoat as he slowly pulls out the adorable puppy hat you purchased for him from the mall yesterday. Mark stares down at the hat in his hands, and itā€™s only when he bursts out in laughter do you finally let your cheeks warm in embarrassment.
ā€œWhat are you laughing at? I-Itā€™s cute!ā€ You stutter, furiously crossing your arms.
When he finally stops his fit of laughter, he sets the hat on his head in triumph as if he were wearing a crown of honor. Seeing it on him makes you giggle too, knowing that it was somehow possible for the boy you liked to get even cuter than he already was.
ā€œHere, press the paws and the ears move,ā€ you hand him the paws that dangled from the side of the hat and experimentally press one of them to demonstrate.
Mark spends the next few minutes pressing the ears at varying intervals and laughing at his reflection in the mirror.
ā€œYou know, maybe I should get upset more often. Youā€™re great with gifts.ā€
Rolling your eyes, you retort, ā€œSure thing, honey.ā€

001: Prongsfoot!
Thank you for the ask!! ā¤ļø
when I started shipping it if I did:
Iā€™m going to start really strong here and say... Iā€™m actually not completely sure. I think it started through my Regulus-obsession and filtering out wolfstar-works for Marauders-era fics. At some point it just clicked, and suddenly I was writing my prongsfoot story for the Sirius fest 2019.Ā
my thoughts:
Oh dear. Iā€™m just generally weak for friends-to-lovers, and these two offer themselves so perfectly for all the pining, for the angst of the trope as well as being in love while a war is going on, and of course for all the shenanigans. I love to play around with post-Hogwarts scenarios and the sub-cultures of the Muggle world of the time too, and all that in front of the canon background that they were inseparable. It offers such a great basis to take it in so many directions and explore a myriad of themes and I just, love them a lot.
what makes me happy about them:
The friendship! Iā€™m a huge fan of having a good friendship as the groundwork of romance, and also, that thereā€™s a lot of room to play with their characterisation. Theyā€™re reckless and a bit stupid but also incredibly smart, and basically the definition of idiots-to-lovers.
what makes me sad about them:
If we donā€™t ignore canon - how they ended, of course. The whole underlying tragedy of how fast they had to grow up, and how very little time they had.
things done in fanfic that annoys me:
Lily (or any other character-) bashing for the sake of the ship, and ignoring their flaws. I like them so much because theyā€™re layered characters (or at least have the huge potential to be).
things I look for in fanfic:
As I said above - I like it a bit complicated and messy and gritty. I like when itā€™s clear that thereā€™s no black and white in a war (or ever, really) and that growing up during one affects them, and when thatā€™s explored. Or if itā€™s AUā€™s or just with another focus, generally the struggle of growing up, two spoiled boys of which one also has a really messed up background. Also, all the pining. So much pining.
who Iā€™d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
I have a huge soft spot for James/Regulus, and I think thereā€™s also a lot of potential in Sirius/Lily. Or James/Lily/Sirius, even though thatā€™s... not strictly with someone else, is it?
my happily ever after for them:
Both survive the war and get to process their trauma. Maybe Sirius becomes a curse-breaker or something along those lines, and James starts playing professional Quidditch, of course. They get to travel a lot, and maybe live in a big house with all their friends, while Sirius also makes up with Regulus. Yeah. ā¤ļø
who is the big spoon/little spoon:
They both want to be the little spoon. James wins most times because Sirius can never tell him no, but they do swap eventually during the night.
what is their favourite non-sexual activity:
I think theyā€™d never grow out of loving harmless pranks. Going flying, either both on Siriusā€™ bike, or James on a broom and Sirius on his bike. Oh and also, going to concerts. ā¤ļø

shuake and/or pegoryu for the ship thing uwuwu
001: Shuake/Akeshu
when I started shipping it if I did:
Honestly? Right from the get-go. I saw Goro at the TV station and when he opposed the Phantom Thieves but immediately took an interest in Akiren, and Akiren reciprocated that interest and there was no outward negativity expressed (by either Akiren or Morgana) towards their relationship, it was basically greenlit in my head. This was back in vanilla -- but the rest of the game, AND Royal, definitely just made it go stronger. The main reason was the fact that they could intellectually stimulate and interest the other with no ill will or malice, and that they both seemed to enjoyĀ it.Ā
my thoughts:
First of all, thereā€™s the entire rivalry thing which I LOVE.Ā
The whole concept of healthy rivalries always appeal in a relationship dynamic to me, because 1) they donā€™t ā€œboreā€ each other due to the fact that thereā€™s always going to be something keeping their interest up in a competitive way, 2) thereā€™s no power imbalance due to the fact that the basis of any rivalry is that they are equals, and 3) both people in the relationship will always be striving to become better not for the other person, but because of the other person. Look at it this way:
Thereā€™s ā€œI want to be the best version of myself to make you happy,ā€ which is pretty much any other relationship dynamic that enforces self-betterment.
THEN, thereā€™s rivalmance, which is, ā€œI want to be the best version of myself because you motivate me to want to become a better person for myself,ā€ which just honestly strikes a chord with me, mainly because it means that the relationship isnā€™t about pandering to one another, but about two people who can go up head-to-head, bare their souls and give each other everything theyā€™ve got, and still come out stronger and happier than when they went in.
Itā€™s exactly this in shuake that appeals to me so much -- that, of course, and the fact that they genuinely care about the other for who the other is, and not for anyone else. Itā€™s especially blatant when you think about the fact that they both mirror each other in so many ways -- they both put on so many masks for the public and everyone around them; theyā€™re both wildcards; theyā€™re designedĀ to mirror the other -- anyway, that list goes on for days.Ā
The fact of the matter is that they can honestly, truly understand each other. Thereā€™s a saying --Ā ā€œit is when dressed for a masquerade where you are most nakedā€ -- that I think fits them really well. Their whole confidant route explores the many layers to their relationship and how they can fully understand the true depth of what the other means by using the guise of casual conversation as metaphor for the truth. Which youā€™ll know I obsess over if youā€™ve seen my post on their third confidant rank in Royal or small potatoes.Ā
Oooops, that got a little long...
And of course, to no oneā€™s surprise.
What makes me happy about them:
canā€™t i just sayĀ ā€œeverythingā€ and be done with it
Okay but in all seriousness, I absolutely love how theyā€™ve found someone so specialĀ for themselves in each other. Their relationship is so valuableĀ to them, so importantĀ and meaningfulĀ that itā€™s truly something I think is precious. And thatā€™s not even taking into account how much they would consider doing (and sacrificing) for the other if need be. Hell, Goro entrusts Akiren with his life missionĀ (taking down Shido to let him rot) before intending to give up his own life in the engine room, and Akiren is given the absolutely heartrending choice to choose between Akechi or the world. The fact that itā€™s such a hard choice to make in and of itself is testament to how much it means. The fact that 2/2 existsĀ is testament. The fact that Goroā€™s third awakening takes place at Leblanc, with Akiren, every little detail. They just. they mean so much to each other and thatā€™s honestly one of the things that reallyĀ makes me happy.
What makes me sad about them:
Nothing in particular about their relationship saddensĀ me, per se? Like, they truly make me and each other happy by virtue of just being there. Thatā€™s not to say that their circumstancesĀ arenā€™t impressively saddening -- just take Proof of Justice, for example. The only thing that saddens me about their relationship is the tragedy of their circumstances:Ā ā€œIf only we had met a few years earlierā€? That hit. Well written angst is the best variant.Ā
things done in fanfic that annoys me:
When. Akiren. is. mean-spirited. to. Goro. or. vice. versa. Itā€™s just...not them? Like, Akiren knows what Goroā€™s been through, and seeing people write him making fun of Goro with the Phantom Thieves as anything further than light/playful teasing just makes me wince because itā€™s... cruel. Similarly, Goroā€™s a prick, yeah, but heā€™d never really go so far as to be needlessly cruelĀ to Akiren and enjoy it for the sake of it. Itā€™s just...blegh. I donā€™t like it.
things I look for in fanfic:
DYNAMIC! If any fic reallyĀ nails their dynamic I absolutely adore it. The edge of competition, the proud and encouraging taunts, the innate bondĀ and trust? Gimme that sweet sweet RIVALMANCE. TheĀ ā€œdo I hate you or do I hate what how you make me feel?ā€ TheĀ ā€œI want to get my feelings across but saying them would make it real and make it matter, so Iā€™m going to layer it within thousands of metaphors and hypotheticals that I know youā€™ll understand regardless, but as long as I donā€™t let myself falter with my goal, itā€™s fineā€
Ahem.Ā
Basically I like them pining/trying to one-up each other and just generally relishing being in the otherā€™s presence.
Who Iā€™d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other:
GOD this is a hard one because I donā€™t really ship either of them with anyone else? I know for Goro thereā€™s been a lot of akesumi stuff going around but that really isnā€™t my cup of tea, so for Goro Iā€™d prooooobably go with Yusuke because akekita is cute, lol. I willĀ say that I headcanon Akiren as massively bi and Iā€™d be willing to settle for shuann but I donā€™t really see them romantically? Like, bi solidarity and thatā€™s all? OH though I wouldnā€™t mind Akiren with Hifumi; thatā€™s a cute ship too!
My happily ever after for them:
Theyā€™re happy as long as theyā€™re together, in my heart. Given both of their characters I think they both do like the fast-paced life that keeps them stimulated, but they can only properly slow down when theyā€™re with each other, just because of how well they truly understand each other and knows what the other needs. Their happily ever after is honestly just them being together, because home is where the heart is.
who is the big spoon/little spoon:
Real talk, they snuggle together and both kind spoon each other? Other than that they alternate between big and little spoon, depending on whose trauma is affecting them. Akiren claims to be the big spoon more often because he likes believing that heā€™s able to comfort Goro when confronted in his darker moments and be there to protect him and assure him that things arenā€™t gonna hurt him anymore, but Goro ends up being the big spoon a lot more frequently because Akiren takes up too many peopleā€™s problems and gets stressed out over them without dealing with his own issues first, so Akiren frequently needs to be reminded that he has someone to protect himĀ too, and Goroā€™s more than glad to be able to fill that role, to be able to help heal instead of hurt.
what is their favorite non-sexual activity:
Anything, so long as itā€™s competitive! As long as they can aim to compete with the other or one-up the other, itā€™ll be absolutely engaging for the both of them, whether itā€™s a debate, a game of chess, battleships, darts, pool, baseball batting in Yongen-Jaya, or playing tennis. Just let them compete and get passionate about it, and theyā€™ll both have the time of their lives. Seriously.Ā
Ask post here!

Recommend some good folk metal music please
:D i never thought iā€™d see the day when someone actually wants to know more about the music i listen to *cracks knuckles* my time has come
I apologize in advance for this novel. Feel free to skip to the recommended tracks lol.
Most folk metal comes out of northern Europe (Finland, heavily) though you can find it all over the world (Hu Band comes to mind but I mean, itā€™s on every continent). I am one of those people with like, a small handful of favorite bands that I listen to mercilessly so I am sure that I am only representing a miniscule percentage of whatā€™s available out there. Whatā€™s great is that folk metal is much more versatile than many other genres in its sound; the essence of folk metal is simply to 1) utilize traditional (or rather, in the sense of a metal band, non-traditional) instruments such as violin, accordion, brass ensemble, bagpipes, what have you, and 2) have lyrical themes which revolve around regional folklore, mythology, cultural heritage, or place (what I particularly like is a frequent reverence and respect for nature). Other genres of metal (death, black) have the second element but not the first, and tend to incorporate darker overall tones and consistently harsher or lo-fi vocal styles and sounds. Folk metal can be a gateway genre into metal and can often be quite hopepunk (if you will). Because of these criteria, the actual sound of folk metal can range from sea shanties toĀ ā€˜spooky walk in the midnight woodsā€™ to scathing social commentary to SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SHOTS SH
Basically you can find a range of styles within the genre that fit what youā€™re looking for, from those that have an orchestral, ballad feel, to things that border on death metal but have a hurdy-gurdy in there. Thereā€™s also a much higher percentage of female-led folk metal bands than other metal genres.
Iā€™ll go through my top picks.
Turisas. These motherfuckers. My boys.
Tumblr media
Turisas is based in Finland, but sing primarily in English (with occasional Finnish, a smidge of Greek and Swedish too). Four albums out to date, fifth in progress. Sound is absolutely fucking bonkers god tier shit, if I may say so myself. Every single song sounds like youā€™ve been transported into an Iliad metal musical. Heavy use of a full orchestra and choir, along with sick violin and accordion solos. Their lyrical themes focus heavily on ancient Greco-Roman and Viking military history - but before you raise any red flags, rest assured theyā€™re liberal as fuck and trust me the tea is scalding when Mathias feels like making a Point about Then and Now. No seriously, I donā€™t know how to express the beauty and depth of his songwriting - Mathias NygĆ„rd is an incredibly talented composer, musician, and songwriter (nay, POET), and an extremely intelligent and down to earth guy. There are plenty of bands that are happy to write Viking songs about pillaging and glorious death in battle and all that (Alestorm comes to mind), those are a dime a dozen. Turisas makes history come to life in a way that transports you back in time and thrusts you into the living breathing world of the past. They deal with the horrors and tragedy of war from both sides, consequences and motivations, fears and pride and loss, home and family, despair and hope. They write songs about people, big and small, and their role in weaving the great tapestry of history. And the best part is that itā€™s informed - Mathias does his damn research and the tales he tells are rooted in fact. He brings them to life so we can experience what it must have been like for those real living people, with the goal of forcing us to confront our own selves in them. Heā€™s a modern Homer, I shit you not.Ā
Did I mention thereā€™s a song about pirates thatā€™s actually really complex and nuanced, about how the hypocrisy and vile colonialist deeds of emperors makes them no different than the criminals they persecute?
Or that they do a badass cover of Rasputin?? yeah?????
Anyway enough gushing. Their second and third albums (The Varangian Way, Stand Up And Fight) are consecutive concept albums that follow the story of the Varangian Guard (the legendary Viking battalion that defended Alexander the Great) so the songs are actually chronologically linked to tell this epic tale. Itā€™s a fucking listen, lads. The Varangian Way is probably my favorite album. But all their albums are top notch.Ā
My favorite songs: End of An Empire (this one comes for 2020 hard), Piece by Piece (AKA die fascists 2k20), Cursed Be Iron, Among Ancestors, Greek Fire, Miklagard Overture (you gotta earn this song tho, itā€™s the finale)
Good first listen picks/hits: Battle Metal, To Holmgard and Beyond, March of the Varangian Guard, Ten More Miles, One More
Finntroll. These other motherfuckers. My other boys.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another big name in the Finnish folk metal scene. As you can see, their band revolves both aesthetically and musically around Scandinavian troll folklore. Yall weird elf-fuckers who like the really big ears? Here you go. Look at those ears. Theyā€™re good friends with Turisas. Both love their facepaint.
Musical style leans much more towards black and death metal influenced, with a heavier, fuller sound and growling vocals. But itā€™s an incredibly rich and creative aural tapestry, with layers of masterfully executed sound thatā€™s a real delight to lose yourself in. Use of fiddle, brass, keyboard, accordion, and banjo, and strong folk melodies make their sound unmistakable and unique. They are known for theirĀ ā€˜black humppaā€™ beat, which basically gives the effect of feeling the primal need to stomp around loudly to their music. Itā€™s great cardio. They also utilize orchestra in some great intro tracks. They know their stuff.
The majority of their songs are sung in Swedish (they do some English cover songs which are FANTASTIC holy SHIT), but donā€™t let that stop you. The mood and power and emotion of their music transcend language, and you can be sure the lyrics are about either trolls, witches, the dark woods, spirits, or something of that ilk. I think Swedish as a language works very well with this kind of music, and honestly having it in English would lose something.Ā
They have been around a long time and so have many albums, but I personally have only listened to the last three which feature their current singer, Mathias LillmĆ„ns, whom I adore. Those albums are Nifelvind, Blodsvept, and their recent release VredesvƤvd (that iā€™ve had on repeat since I got it three weeks ago). Iā€™m sure their other ones are great too, I just canā€™t make a personal recommendation since I havenā€™t heard them.Ā
My favorite songs: GalgasĆ„ng, Tiden Utan Tid, Ylaren, Skogsdotter, TvĆ„ Ormar,Ā Ett NorrskensdĆ„d,Ā Skƶvlarens Dƶd
Good first listen picks/hits: Forsen, Under Bergets Rot,Ā HƤxbrygd, Trollhammaren (older song), Solsagan
Iā€™ll go through these other ones a little faster, I havenā€™t heard quite as much from them but I do love them.
Korpiklaani.Ā
Tumblr media
Great, full folk sound, utilizes a lot of folk instruments including some less commonly seen ones like hurdy gurdy. Songs are mostly in Finnish but plenty in English too.Ā Jonne JƤrvelƤ has a really unique voice that grows on you, but itā€™s not for everyone. The band started as Sami folk, and Jonne is trained in Sami yoik singing, which makes an appearance in a few songs. I prefer the Finnish tracks, as a lot of the English ones are drinking songs lmao. But again, really well-executed music with layers of sound that keeps you hooked. I havenā€™t heard enough of their discography to really recommend enough to cover everything.Ā
Song picks:Ā MinƤ NƤin VedessƤ Neidon, MetsƤlle,Ā Ć„mmƤnhauta, Lempo
Moonsorrow.
Tumblr media
Definitely a darker, black-folk band. Probably not a great pick if you arenā€™t accustomed to black metal - very long tracks (8-15 mins is standard), growling/shrieking vocals, aĀ ā€˜thinnerā€™ but encompassing wall of sound usual of black metal, but with the benefit of wonderfully entrancing dark folk elements and chants. Itā€™s done really really well. Sung almost entirely in Finnish (apart from cover tracks). Lyrically, focuses on themes of Norse mythology, man vs nature and similar elements. Definitely one of those bands whose music gets you into a zone. I can lose serious time just putting a whole album on and letting my mind wander elsewhere. My favorite album is Jumalten Aika.Ā
Song picks:Ā Ruttolehto Sis. PƤivƤttƶmƤn PƤivƤn Kansa (my fucking FAVORITE), Suden Tunti (well known hit), and also uhh check out their cover of Non Serviam cause itā€™s a fucking banger
Other bands that I like what Iā€™ve heard but really canā€™t say much about them, whoops - Tyr (from the Faroe Islands, great stuff, Faroese is a baller language), Ensiferum, Nightwish (female-led).... Iā€™m open to suggestions. Like I said, there are folk metal bands all over the world, and each is intrinsically linked to a sense of place and cultural identity that makes them unique. Iā€™d love to hear about more tbh.Ā

The third season of Hudson & Rex returns on Tuesday with an episode new and veteran fans will love. Entitled ā€œThe Hunt,ā€ the instalment serves as the showā€™s origin story, revealing how Charlie (John Reardon) and Rex (Diesel vom Burgimwald) became partners. Charlie recalls the story to Sarah (Mayko Nguyen) and we view the emotional adventure through flashbacks.
Itā€™s a powerful episode of television, and the perfect kickoff to Season 3. We spoke to stars John Reardon and Mayko Nguyen about the evolution of Hudson & Rex, and what fans can expect this season.
How did COVID-19 affect production on Season 3? Mayko Nguyen: Iā€™m not going to lie, coming out of strict isolation and then being out in the world which you could be out here at that time and then being on set, being around people, it was a bit jarring for sure. But I felt confident in the measures that we were taking. Weā€™ve shot outside a lot more this year. You know, the adjustment of wearing the masks. Itā€™s funny. Itā€™s just like anything else, it takes a bit, and sometimes you have people who are like, ā€˜Ugh,ā€™ but then itā€™s like, youā€™re just wearing a mask. Itā€™s not a big deal. And then you get used to it. Like now I feel weird when I donā€™t have the mask on. I feel like Iā€™m missing something. So, I think itā€™s, again, itā€™s just like any transition, you just get used to it and I think weā€™re all happy to be there and happy to do it for the sake of getting to work.
John Reardon: I feel very fortunate that weā€™re able to be working right now. Weā€™ve been working since July, I think one of the first productions in North America to come back. Itā€™s something that we donā€™t take for granted because the situation in so many places is very tough for people right now. So, itā€™s pretty special to have people wanting to see the show and being able to keep it going. Iā€™m definitely excited to get it on the air.
The first episode of this third season really, really well done. It was enjoyable to get the true origin story of how Charlie and Rex became partners, even if it was a tragedy that brought them together. MN: We had a screening for the cast of that one episode. I think we do really well with this show because thereā€™s a lot of heart, and I feel like thatā€™s unavoidable when you have a dog who is working to help people, thatā€™s just unavoidable, but that episode in particular ā€¦ oh man, itā€™s just gut-wrenching. And you see how Rex and Charlie develop the start of that relationship and that also is ā€¦ oh, itā€™s such a good episode and I was really excited when I read it for the first time because it is a departure from the standard structure of our show and itā€™s a special episode and Iā€™m really glad because of course, of course, we want to know how Charlie and Rex started out, right?
JR: I remember reading that episode for the first time about a month before we went to camera and just thinking how much I felt the audience would enjoy it because theyā€™re going to see the sneak peek of how Rex and Charlie meet and how everybody interacted before Rex was there and then sort of see where that relationship starts. Iā€™m really happy with how it turned out and I think everybody is and so I hope people really respond to it well.
Watching the first episode, I feel like the show has confidence going into Season 3. Do you feel that? JR: Yeah, I do. I definitely feel like I learn more about Charlie every year and I think whatā€™s great is when we have an episode like this and we also have a few other episodes later in the season that has sort of personal stakes or alludes to our charactersā€™ history. I think when we add that stuff in, it helps build the character even more. Things that we might not have known as the actor comes to light and then that adds an extra layer to them. In our very first episode, ā€˜The Hunt,ā€™ we allude a little bit to how Charlie and Rex met, but when you infuse it with all the heart from that episode and all the scenes that we shot and you create that history, then that I feel that lives on in the future episodes as well. I think it just adds to the DNA of the show.
There are 10 directors during this season of Hudson & Rex. One of them is Tracey Deer. Sheā€™s an amazing person and director. What was it like working with her? JR: I hadnā€™t worked with her before, but sheā€™s fabulous and I really enjoyed working with her. Sheā€™s a very intelligent, very thoughtful director, and puts a lot of thought into how really small things can make a huge difference in the tone of the story. She looks at it not just at the macrocosm, but also the microcosm of everything and thatā€™s great because it just gives you more and more stuff to play with. Sheā€™s a lovely person and I really, really enjoyed working with her. Sheā€™s very talented.
Mayko, what can you say about Sarahā€™s journey this season? MN: Thereā€™s stuff going on in Sarahā€™s life for sure. I think that that first episode is an example of it, sort of cementing this friendship with Charlie and the rest of the team. But, you know, in that first episode, Charlie lets her in on this very special, private thing that he does, this annual thing that she gets to be part of that, and I think I feel very honoured to get be, to have that shared with me. I feel like every season weā€™re deepening that friendship and deepening those relationships, I feel and maybe this is what youā€™re picking up on, but the team does feel that much more cohesive this year and I donā€™t know how to articulate why or what that is, but it feels much more tight-knit and weā€™ve got some episodes for sure where weā€™re working even harder as a team to figure out some of these cases.
Hudson and Rex airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on Citytv.

Reviewing time for MAG172!
- I didnā€™t truly believe that we would encounter a Web domain so soon, since somehow I still pictured it as the very last thing standing between Jon&Martin and the Panopticon. It means that the domains that I was expecting to be the most ā€œheavyā€ on the boys, the Lonely and the Web, are already behind us (weā€™re down to Hunt, Vast, Dark, Spiral, and Eye).
- The ā€œthanks Alexā€ Funā„¢ Fact of the episode was that he used the sounds of spider mating calls in this one. Alex, why.
- With MAG170, this was amongst the most ā€œempatheticā€ episodes of the season so far? Or at least as far as the Fears domains are concerned? It was closer to the way older statements were framed: it really felt like someoneā€™s story, someoneā€™s personal struggles and life, the horrible things happening to them. Iā€™m a bit less fond of statements this season, overall, because they feel too voyeuristic (I know, thatā€™s the point!), because itā€™s decontextualised people reduced to their fears and nothing moreā€¦ but Francisā€™s story really felt heart-wrenching.
And it was an incredibly harsh episode, dealing with codifications, scripted situations, stage&audience conspiring against the ā€œpuppetā€ (the audience laughing at Francisā€™s misery), down to the audience call excluding the non-binary protagonist (ā€œLadies and gentlemenā€), physical cruelty (the hooks, the spiders). I like how Francisā€™s ā€œactā€ worked, both by highlighting that they had absolutely no chance of ever winning the play on their terms, since the Spider was deploying everything against them (physical restrains, pain, psychological torture and the voices of close ones for more pressure and impacts)ā€¦ and yet, that we saw them still fiercely trying to reject what the Spider wanted, still able to tell that this was not what they wanted. It was also a good move that, in this one, Francis was a victim from start to finish: not pitted against others; the addiction wasnā€™t making them a danger for anyone else, it was first and foremost about them, what they wanted for themselves, how othersā€™ casual cruelty was in the way and isolated them further, leaving them at the mercy of the Spider and its hooks. If there was someone ā€œwinningā€, it was the Spider (managing to give birth to many others); all of this was solely for its benefit.
It seems to be part of The Webā€™s game to allow some resistance, to revel in internal conflicts, but it doesnā€™t remove the fact that Francis had been tortured for 48068 acts, and that they were still trying to reject it.
- We got a few interesting formats so far: The Stranger's poem (MAG165), The Endā€™s Coronerā€™s report (MAG168), The Fleshā€™s botanical book (MAG171), and now The Webā€™s play (MAG172)ā€¦ which was awful(ly clever), with the puppet/puppeteerā€™s dynamic.
Nothing new about The Web preying on vulnerable/isolated people, and especially people dealing with addiction, itā€™s been a reoccurring thing: Raymond Fielding had taken in kids that the system didnā€™t know how to handle (and nobody was suspecting anything when, as ā€œlegal adultsā€, they were disappearing); a Spider person had tried to get Trevor off her back by making old needs resurface; Annabelleā€™s first encounter with The Web, if she were to be believed, was through a victim who had suffered with drug addiction; there is a huge proportions of smoker characters in Web-related statements, and there is still Jonā€™s lighter and Jon starting to smoke again after he got it.
Same thing: nothing new about The Web having a knack for stories and the entertainment arts! We had two statements dealing with movies, Annabelle taunting Jon about having possibly lied during her own statements, Annabelleā€™s website searching for storiesā€¦
- WOW, did this domain come for Jonā€™s throat as the ~Apocalypse-bringer~
(MAG172) THE SPIDER: Oh, Francisā€¦ Itā€™s such a shame, but I couldnā€™t do such a thing even if I wanted to! The man in the audience saw to that! [CHUCKLES] I am no more free than you are, little puppet. Ah! If only you could see the strings that bind me, that wind together as they pull me along my own pathā€¦! Perhaps then, you would not blame me so. But they are not the tripping threads that we are here to watch ā€“ no. So sit, Francis. Itā€™s timeā€¦!
That gaslighting and self-victimisation from the monster who was pulling the strings and doing a show to generate more of itself (both fears and spiders). First time one directly referred to Jonā€™s presence, of course it would be a Web one, uhā€¦
- There was an awful parallel between Francisā€™s story, the Spider forcing the consumption on them, and Jonā€¦ for the first time, getting stuck in a loop of stories as the next act was beginning. Is Jon reacting to the domainā€™s logic (since this one works on the long term, the accumulation, the fact that Francis knew that their torture would keep going and happen again and again)? Was it The Web purposefully trying to trap Jon here? Was Jon more susceptible to this domain given his own experience with The Web and his relying on statements? Would Jon even have been able to leave if Martin hadnā€™t been there to stop itā€¦?
(Jon had already been vulnerable to the cabin, as he discovered in MAG162: the domains and the new reality can affect him. Jon had pointed out that The Eye didnā€™t want Jon to stay there; itā€™s not surprising, but incredibly bold to see that a Web domain tried to trap Beholdingā€™s precious little Archivistā€¦)
- Second time that Martin had to forcefully interrupt Jon mid-statement:
(MAG169) ARCHIVIST: The photos on the wall of her familyā€“ā€MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon! [STATIC INCREASES] ARCHIVIST: ā€œā€“whose faces seem indistinct but she knowsā€“ā€ MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon! ARCHIVIST: ā€œā€“that she loves, begin to blacken, as the glassā€“ā€ MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon! [COUGHS] ARCHIVIST: ā€œā€“pops out of the frame.ā€ MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon, sheā€™s here! ARCHIVIST: ā€œHer home is being eaten alive byā€“ā€ MARTIN: [CLOSER] Please come back! ARCHIVIST: ā€œā€“this devouring Desolationā€“ā€ MARTIN: JON! ARCHIVIST: ā€œā€“and sheā€“ā€ [RESOUNDING SLAP] [STATIC FADES] MARTIN: Sheā€™s here! [COUGHS]
(MAG172) AUDIENCE (BACKGROUND): [LOUD CLAPS AND CHEERING] [STATIC RISES] ARCHIVIST: ā€œThe tragedy of Francis. A comic puppet show in all acts. Act 48068.ā€ MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon? ARCHIVIST: ā€œA stage that is a room that remains a stage.ā€ MARTIN: [MUFFLED, DISTANT] Jon, one is enough. ARCHIVIST: ā€œThe audienā€“ā€ [RESOUNDING SLAP] [STATIC FADES] AUDIENCE (BACKGROUND): [CONSTANT MUFFLED LAUGHTERS] ARCHIVIST: Ohā€¦ Oh, whā€“what? MARTIN: ā€¦ Sorry. You were starting another and, I didnā€™t want to wait. We should get going.
And the trick definitely seems to be not being in Jonā€™s presence while he settles into statement-mode, or it prevents anyone from being able to interrupt? Martin wasnā€™t able to stop him during MAG167 (but that statement had been sneaky about its start), and he didnā€™t when they were in Jaredā€™s garden eitherā€¦
* Daisy listened to Jon reading two statements during season 4 (MAG133 and MAG136) and, although it was part of their deal that she would not interrupt, I wonder if she could have, back then? Jon had gotten interrupted a lot during season 1 and 2, but it was by people walking into his office while he had begun reading alone.
* ā€¦ Iā€™m still not sure that Basira could have stopped Jon in MAG141, when he forced Floyd to give his statement? Jon told her that she could have but hadnā€™t because she wanted to know too, but he was also, quite frankly, full of shit and trying to avoid his own responsibility with regards to his victims, back then.
* Itā€™s interesting that Jonā€™s ā€œstatement bubbleā€ is now constantly showing to muffle sounds from the exterior (/from an extra-diegetic level) when heā€™s giving the statement. The tape recorder only catches Martinā€™s voice muffled, far, as if behind another layer. But once Martin broke Jon out of it, the cheers, laughs and claps from the audience, which used to be very distinct and present, were the ones suddenly sounding far away (while Martin was on the same level as Jon). Weā€™ve been told, again and again, that the tape recorders are not neutral, but I find quite interesting the fact that theyā€™re ā€œtranslatingā€ the different levels around Jon in this way?
- On first listen, I had failed to understand that Martin was actually meant to stay around Jon ā€“ like in MAG171, and like he had done in MAG163 when they discovered Jonā€™s new need to pour out about the domains:
(MAG163) ARCHIVIST: You probably want to wait outside. MARTIN: ā€¦ Hum, no?! ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] Wellā€¦ Put your fingers in your ears then, I, I suppose. [ā€¦] Martinā€¦? [DRIP] Martin? [DRIP] Martin, I hate your tea, and wish you made coffee insteadā€¦! [DRIP] ā€¦ Alright, then. [ā€¦] End recordingā€¦! [CLEARS THROAT] [SHUFFLING] MARTIN: Mm? All done? ARCHIVIST: [INHALE] Yes. [EXHALE] MARTIN: Good.
(MAG164) ARCHIVIST: Weā€™re fine. MARTIN: Aā€“are we? I mean, that place isā€“ ā€¦ I donā€™t, I donā€™t feel fine, okay, and you were there a long time doing yourā€¦ yā€“youā€“your guidebook, which, you know, I get it, but that place isā€¦ Iā€“itā€™sā€“itā€™s infectious, and, I donā€™tā€“
(MAG165) ARCHIVIST: You, uhā€¦ [SHUFFLING] You might want to take a bit of a walk. Thisā€¦ feels like a strange oneā€¦ [LOUDER SCREAMS IN THE DISTANCE] MARTIN: What does ā€œstrangeā€ mean, with something like this? ARCHIVIST: Donā€™t think you want to knowā€¦! MARTIN: Good point. Hum, oā€“kay, well, uhā€¦ Good luck, Iā€™ll beā€¦ uh, oā€“over there! [BAG JOSTLING] [DEPARTING FOOTSTEPS] ARCHIVIST: [INHALE] ā€¦ Right.
(MAG166) MARTIN: Do you need anything? ARCHIVIST: No. MARTIN: Fine, Iā€™ll justā€¦ [RUSTLING OF CLOTHES] Yeā€“yeah, right. [BAG JOSTLING] [DEPARTING FOOTSTEPS] ARCHIVIST: [EXHALE]
(MAG168) ARCHIVIST: Now, if youā€™re quite done inciting me to murder? MARTIN: Not ā€œmurderā€! Smiting. ARCHIVIST: [FOND SIGH] MARTIN: Right, yes, yes, of course. Youā€¦ [INHALE] You vomit your horrors. [SIGH] ARCHIVIST: [REVULSED SOUND] Uh! Iā€™mā€¦ not sure I like that metaphorā€¦! MARTIN: ā€œPuke your terrorsā€? ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Just go. MARTIN: Alright. Fine, Iā€™m going. [BAG JOSTLING] [DEPARTING FOOTSTEPS]
(MAG170) MARTIN: Why am I here? Iā€¦ I, I fell behind. I was, I was too slow, and, and, and the fog caught up, I wasā€¦ I was following, alā€“always following, never leading; never leading. Why did he leave me behind? Diā€“did he? [ā€¦] I thought youā€™d left me behindā€¦! Gone on without me. ARCHIVIST: No, neverā€¦! Nā€“never, Iā€“I justā€¦ [RUSTLING OF CLOTHES] I, I didnā€™t want toā€¦ look too haā€“, Iā€“Iā€“I promised I wouldnā€™tā€¦ know you, and, and with the fog in allā€“all the rooms, Iā€™ll, I just, I lost yā€“, Iā€¦ Iā€“Iā€™m sorry.
(MAG171) JARED: [LONG MEATY INHALE, EXHALE] Cheers for that! ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Donā€™t. MARTIN: Jon, are youā€¦ alright? ARCHIVIST: Yeah, humā€¦ Sorry. MARTIN: No, it, itā€™s alright.
(MAG172) ARCHIVIST: If youā€™re bored, you could alwaysā€¦ take in a show. MARTIN: Thatā€™sā€¦ Thatā€™s not funny, Jon. ARCHIVIST: If you say soā€¦! MARTIN: Justā€¦ [INHALE] Just give me a shout when youā€™re done, alright? [BAG JOSTLING] [RUSTLING OF CLOTHES] ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Good. Right. [ā€¦] MARTIN: ā€¦ Sorry. You were starting another and, I didnā€™t want to wait. We should get going. ARCHIVIST: Yā€“you were listening, Iā€¦ Iā€“Iā€“I thought that youā€“ MARTIN: No, Iā€¦ Not for most of it. I just thought I heardā€¦ something. Whatever. I went exploring, alright? I donā€™t know why; I shouldnā€™t have. [ā€¦] Can we just go, please? ARCHIVIST: Of course, butā€¦ You were safe here. And after everything thatā€™s already happened, Iā€¦ Iā€“I just donā€™t understand why you wouldā€“ MARTIN: [SHAKEY] Me neither, okay! ARCHIVIST: What? MARTIN: I mean, thatā€™s it, isnā€™t it?! I donā€™t know! I donā€™t know why I went exploring!
So theyā€™ve truly learned from the Lonely house: Martin had to stay in MAG163 when they discovered Jonā€™s new predicament; then starting MAG164, Martin began to leave Jon alone for his statements, not keen to listen to them. In MAG170, they lost sight of each other in the house ā€“ since then, Martin has gone back to staying around Jon, trying to not listen (except, precisely, that Martin went wandering off in MAG172, which he wasnā€™t supposed to do, and came backā€¦ just in time when Jon was beginning a new cycle). Trials and errors.
- MMMMM, so this is the second time Martin did something, wasnā€™t exactly able to explain why he had done it, was questioned about it, and the matter was ultimately left hanging:
(MAG134) PETER: What does puzzle me, though, and I mean that genuinely, isā€¦ why you were piling tape recorders onto the coffin, while Jon was in there. [PAUSE] Itā€™s a question, Martin, itā€™sā€“ itā€™s not an accusation. MARTIN: I donā€™t know. And I justā€¦ felt like it might help. Heā€™s always recording, I thoughtā€¦ itā€“it might help himā€¦ find his way out. PETER: Interesting. Were you compelled? MARTIN: [SULLEN] ā€¦ I donā€™t know. ā€¦ Mā€“maybe? Iā€“I, I definitely wanted to do itā€¦ PETER: But? MARTIN: Iā€™mā€¦ Iā€™m not sure where the idea came from. PETER: You should watch out for that. Could be something dangerous. MARTIN: Sure.
(MAG172) MARTIN: No, Iā€¦ Not for most of it. ARCHIVIST: Are you saying you wereā€¦ compelled? MARTIN: Iā€™m saying I donā€™t know, do I? I thought I was just curious, it felt like curiosity, butā€¦ given where we are, and with The Web everywhere, and Annabelle Cane still out there playing mind games with payphones, I justā€¦ [SIGH] I mean, how do you even know if itā€™s your motivation, you know? Being hereā€¦ [SIGH] Iā€“it just makes me second-guess all of it, and Iā€¦ I donā€™t like it, itā€¦ really scares me.
Regarding Martin putting the tape recorders on the Coffin: Jonah didnā€™t claim it to be his doing in MAG160 (I thiiink that Peter was suspicious of Elias influencing Martin then, since he also checked that Elias wasnā€™t overstepping in MAG158ā€¦), so probs wasnā€™t him. Annabelle pointed out to Jon that she had sometimes helped ā€œto keep you safeā€ in MAG147, I still feel like it was most likely her doing?
Two things were interesting here: that Martin began exploring, and that he came back just in time to stop Jon. The first one left Jon vulnerable, allowing him to potentially get trapped in the cycle of Francisā€™s Acts; the second oneā€¦ allowed Martin to make him snap out of it just in time. Or the wandering may have ā€œprotectedā€ Martin from being trapped in Jonā€™s statement, too, because he could have accidentally begun listening if heā€™d hung around?
(A bit afraid about the fact that, twice, it was shown that as long as Martin didnā€™t slap Jon out of a statement, he wouldnā€™t stop: it makes Jon and Martin both vulnerable to their surroundings if theyā€™re not together. Jon gets trapped in the statement, while Martinā€™s main protection is still Jonā€¦ That sounds a bit like a weakness that could get used against them at some point? ;;)
- SOB about Martin mentioning he was (probably) motivated by ā€œcuriosityā€, since it has been hammered in thatā€¦ it isnā€™t a good thing for Beholding-touched people to indulge themselves too much, tends to cause their downfall, and has even allowed The Spider to sneak in and weave its Web:
(MAG167) ARCHIVIST: ā€œWhen Gertrude was appointed to the role, there was a single survivor left in the Archives: a woman by the name of Fiona Law. Fiona was the most fascinating combination of curiosity and cowardice, pushing forward and forward into the unknown, until the very first moment of threatā€¦ crystallised. [ā€¦] She had never got deep enough into the mysteries that plagued her to slake that burning curiosity. And she never would. [ā€¦] But Emma had a sickness. As much as she might have despised the ageing Fiona, it was the same one that plagued her: curiosity. That desperate, grasping need to know. [ā€¦] There was a fire to Sarah Carpenter, perhaps the one which led to Gertrude hiring her, and Emmaā€™s curiosity ignited once again, this time keen to find out exactly what it would take to break this brave investigator of the unknown.ā€
No wonder Martin Is Feeling So Threatened Right Now, after having learned about Emma (Beholding assistant taken over by The Webā€¦ and become a master at deceiving her Archivist).
- Martin rejected the Lonely house, so does it mean that other domains will be trying to seduce him, now? Itā€™s interesting that he reacted to the theatre in a way that was very similar to the house, which was supposed to be ā€œhisā€ (but wasnā€™t ā€œanymoreā€):
(MAG167) ARCHIVIST: We all have a domain here, Martin. The place that feeds us. MARTIN: Oh. [PAUSE] Whereā€™s yours? ARCHIVIST: [MIRTHLESS CHUCKLE] I mean, weā€™reā€¦ traveling towards it. MARTIN: Oh! Right, obviously. [CHUCKLING] Duh. Humā€¦ What about me? ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Would youā€¦ like me toā€¦ ? MARTIN: No, no. Donā€™t tell me. I donā€™t want to know.
(MAG170) MARTIN: Do I have a home? This, this place feels like itā€™s allā€¦ for me, I think, but I donā€™tā€¦ [CREAKING OF A DOOR] I donā€™t like it here. [ā€¦] I feel like thereā€™s somewhere I need to be, butā€¦ But no, no; this is my house, [CHUCKLE] where else would I need to be? [ā€¦] You, you are Martin Blackwood; yes. Youā€“you didnā€™t choose to be here. Jon is coming. I am Martin Blackwood, and I am not lonely anymore, I am not lonely anymore! [ā€¦] Jon, itā€™sā€¦ okay. I promise itā€™s okay. This place tried, it really did, and honestly Iā€¦ I wanted to believe it. But I didnā€™t. ARCHIVIST: Thisā€¦ ā€œplaceā€, iā€“itā€¦ [STATIC] My Godā€¦! MARTIN: Yeahā€¦ [SILENCE] ARCHIVIST: Mā€“Martin, if youā€¦ did; iā€“if you wanted to forgetā€¦ aā€“all of it, stay here and justā€¦ escape. Iā€¦ I would understand. [ā€¦] I, I justā€¦ I wanted to make sure that you knew what this place was. MARTIN: Itā€™s The Lonely, Jon. Itā€™s me. ARCHIVIST: [INHALE] Not anymore. MARTIN: Hm! No. [LONG INHALE, EXHALE] Noā€¦! Not anymore.
(MAG172) MARTIN: No, Iā€¦ Not for most of it. I just thought I heardā€¦ something. Whatever. I went exploring, alright? I donā€™t know why; I shouldnā€™t have. [ā€¦] ARCHIVIST: Are you saying you wereā€¦ compelled? MARTIN: Iā€™m saying I donā€™t know, do I? I thought I was just curious, it felt like curiosity, butā€¦ given where we are, and with The Web everywhere, and Annabelle Cane still out there playing mind games with payphones, I justā€¦ [ā€¦] ARCHIVIST: Would you like to leave now? [BAG JOSTLING] AUDIENCE (BACKGROUND): [LAUGHS] MARTIN: ā€¦ Yeah, screw this place. Never liked theatre anyway.
Interesting, too, that there are a few parallels right now with the situation in which Martin had initially encountered Peter in MAG108: while reading a theatre-related statement, isolated and scared. Even Jonā€™s way of describing The Lonelyā€™s ā€œseductivenessā€ was quite reminiscent of The Web (especially in Francisā€™s story):
(MAG150) ARCHIVIST: The Lonely isā€¦ possibly the most insidious of the powers, I believe. Certainly it is the one thatā€¦ most delights in having you do its work for it. Even the Spiders seem to have a hard time matching it for sheer seductiveness. [HUFF] ā€œTime to yourselfā€, ā€œself-careā€, ā€œputting yourself forwardā€ā€¦ ā€œnot being a burden on those you care aboutā€ā€¦ [PAUSE] It doesnā€™t even need to tell you any lies; just waits for the lies you tell yourself.
Soā€¦ a few similarities in the way The Lonely and The Web are shown trying to seduce Martin? Martin seemed to reject the theatre, but it could do a Peter with him and goā€¦ persistent.
(So obligatory ā€œthis is how Web!Martin can still winā€, and itā€™s never not a good time to remind myself of:
(MAG138) MARTIN: I think he wants me to join The Lonely. ELIAS: Then it sounds like you have a decision to make. [SILENCE] MARTIN: ā€¦ What? [HUFF] Thatā€™s it? No, no monologue, no mindgames? You love manipulating people! ELIAS: That makes two of us. MARTIN: [HUFF]
(MAG158) MARTIN: Oh, Iā€™m getting there, but if this is the final test or something? Then bad luck. The answerā€™s still ā€œnoā€. [FOOTSTEPS] PETER: ā€¦ No. No! This isnā€™t fair, do you have any idea what youā€™ve done? You knew, he must haveā€“ MARTIN: Eliasā€“ ā€¦ Jonah had nothing to do with it. PETER: No! Thatā€™s notā€“ You canā€™tā€“ ELIAS: Youā€™ve lost, Peter. Admit it. [CHUCKLE] He played you like aā€¦ like a cheap whistle. PETER: No! Shut up!
Because gnnnnnnnnnnniiiiiiiiiih.)
- It was a bit of a (pleasant) surprise that Jon&Martin didnā€™t meet Annabelle in the obligatory Web domain of their journey! But it makes us go back to the usual question: where is she, why is she not showing herself directly, what does she want, why canā€™t Jon see where she is?
(MAG172) MARTIN: Jon, what does The Web want? Itā€™sā€¦ I mean, we know itā€™s got a plan, canā€™t you justā€¦ see what it is? ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] ā€œKnowingā€, ā€œseeingā€ā€¦ iā€“itā€™s not the same thing asā€¦ understanding. Every time I try to know what The Webā€™s plan is, if it can even be called a plan, I seeā€¦ a hundred thousand events and causes and links, an impossibly intricate pattern of consequences and subtle nudges, but Iā€“I canā€™tā€¦! ā€¦ I canā€™t hold them all in my head at the same time. Thereā€™s no way to see the ā€œwholeā€, the, the point of it all. I can see all the details, but it doesnā€™tā€¦ provideā€¦ context orā€¦ intention. I suppose The Web doesnā€™t work in knowledge, not in the same way. MARTIN: ā€¦ Oh. Right. [SIGH] ARCHIVIST: Sorry. MARTIN: ā€¦ And Annabelle? ARCHIVIST: Still canā€™t see her. If it wasnā€™t for the phone call, Iā€™d have said she was probably already deadā€¦! MARTIN: Yeahā€¦ [SIGH]
Jon had trouble seeing when inside of Hill Top Road, back in MAG147 (though he blamed it on having recently encountered The Dark). Could she be there? On the other side of the crack? Waiting inside of the Panopticon/Institute? On the back of Jonā€™s head? Being many many spiders, as an avatar, and thus impossible to locate because sheā€™s plural? Technically dead already, but having planned and foreseen how the phone call with Martin would go, leaving a pre-recorded message that would play exactly as needed? That makes a lot of people that Jon has trouble seeing in the new world, with Georgie&Melanie, Jonahā€¦
- Iā€™m still laughing a lot that the beginning of the episode felt very much like Jon asking for a bathroom break:
(MAG172) ARCHIVIST: Ahā€¦ Hold up, Iā€“I need to, uhā€¦ [RUSTLING OF CLOTHES] MARTIN: Now, seriously? Weā€™re almost out of here. ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] Iā€™m sorryā€¦! Not really up to meā€¦! MARTIN: Fine. [SIGH]
Martin: When are we getting to the Panopticon!! Canā€™t we take another direction or a shortcut? I donā€™t like these places. Jon: Can we stop for a bit? I really need a break!! Right now!!
Awful kids, do not go on vacation with them.
- Eeeeeeh that Jon&Martinā€™s tastes in media are so different!
(MAG136) ARCHIVIST: Hm. Neil Lagorioā€¦ You ever see any of his work? DAISY: No. Not really into films. ARCHIVIST: Oh, they wereā€¦ Well, letā€™s just say that itā€™s not a complete shock there was something unnatural to them. Didnā€™t know we had copies in the Institute, though; let alone original cuts. [CHUCKLE] Records indicate they [PAPERS RUSTLING] ended up inā€¦ Artefact Storage. DAISY: Probably best that they stay there. ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Yeah. Yes, of course.
(MAG165) MARTIN: Was it a good poem? ARCHIVIST: I donā€™t know! ā€œNoā€? Youā€™re the poetry expert, Martin, not meā€¦! [ā€¦] Then I donā€™t know what you mean, Martin, Iā€™m not a poetry person, I donā€™tā€¦ ā€œget itā€. I never have. MARTIN: Thatā€™sā€¦ Thatā€™s fine, I understandā€¦! ARCHIVIST: Look. Iā€™m better than I was; I used to think all poetry was bad. MARTIN: Sorry, what?! ARCHIVIST: I mean, I just thought ofā€¦ [SIGH] I sort of thought it was pointless! Justā€¦ write some prose and stopā€¦ wasting everyoneā€™s time! MARTIN: Hm! What changed? ARCHIVIST: I donā€™t know, I justā€¦ mellowed on it, I suppose. MARTIN: Thatā€™sā€¦ kind of weird. ARCHIVIST: In my defence, there is a lot of bad poetry out there.
(MAG167) ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Methinks the Spider doth protest too muchā€¦! [BAG JOSTLING] MARTIN: Jon. ARCHIVIST: Joking! Just joking.
(MAG172) MARTIN: ā€¦ Yeah, screw this place. Never liked theatre anyway.
I hope that Theatre Kid Jon felt personally offended by that last one. (Iā€™m really waiting for Martin to learn that Jon has been listening to The Archers.)
- It had been highlighted in season 3 that Martin didnā€™t really get Jonā€™s sense of humour. The archival staff overall had a general tendency to resort to dark/insensitive humour to cope with their situation, but ;; I side with Martin on how right now, it doesnā€™t feel relieving or reassuring that Jon makes small jokes about the horror befalling people:
(MAG171) ARCHIVIST: It takes a skilled gardener to get them to grow like this. The curling, cascading intricacies of collagen and marrowā€¦ it takes devotion. MARTIN: Jon. [FOOTSTEPS STOP] [WHIMPERS IN THE BACKGROUND] ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ Sā€“sorry. MARTIN: You sound like you think theyā€™re beautiful. [FOOTSTEPS RESUME] ARCHIVIST: Donā€™t you? [SILENCE]
(MAG172) ARCHIVIST: If youā€™re bored, you could alwaysā€¦ take in a show. MARTIN: Thatā€™sā€¦ Thatā€™s not funny, Jon. ARCHIVIST: If you say soā€¦! [ā€¦] Ticket for one, then, I suppose.
ā€¦ because we donā€™t really know if Jon wants to make them stop?
(ā€œTicket for oneā€, tho, was INCREDIBLE and very ā€œjON.ā€)
- ā€¦ When Jon told Martin to try to not focus too much on which part of his actions/decisions could be due to The Web:
(MAG172) MARTIN: Iā€™m saying I donā€™t know, do I? I thought I was just curious, it felt like curiosity, butā€¦ given where we are, and with The Web everywhere, and Annabelle Cane still out there playing mind games with payphones, I justā€¦ [SIGH] I mean, how do you even know if itā€™s your motivation, you know? Being hereā€¦ [SIGH] Iā€“it just makes me second-guess all of it, and Iā€¦ I donā€™t like it, itā€¦ really scares me. ARCHIVIST: I, uhā€¦ MARTIN: Oh, donā€™t say thatā€™s what it wants, I know. ARCHIVIST: I, I wasnā€™t going to. [ā€¦] Donā€™t do this to yourself, Martin. This is what it wants, the, the paranoia. [SIGH] Trust me, I, I know. MARTIN: ā€¦ Fair.
ā€¦ he indeed reaaaally knew from experience. MAG147 had visible effects on him, to the point that Melanie directly addressed it and Annabelle became a regular potential culprit in Jonā€™s mind alongside Peter and Elias:
(MAG147) ARCHIVIST: Iā€™m sure the flares will work fine. ā€¦ I mean, unā€“unless itā€™s all someā€¦ elaborateā€¦ plotā€¦ to have usā€¦ burn this place down again. BASIRA: So what if it is? ARCHIVIST: I donā€™t followā€¦? BASIRA: I mean. Anything we do could be part of the ā€œGrand Master Planā€. So ā€“ what, we do nothing? Justā€¦ sit on our hands, and hope thatā€™s not what the spiders want? ARCHIVIST: [SIGH]
(MAG150) ARCHIVIST: Melanie, could youā€¦ could you describe your therapist for me? MELANIE: [CHUCKLING] What? You think I wouldnā€™t notice if she had cobwebs down her face? ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ No? [ā€¦] Itā€™s justā€¦ The Web can be subtle, you understand? MELANIE: And? For all you know, its plan is to paralyse you with indecisionā€¦! ARCHIVIST: [SIGH] MELANIE: Leaving youā€¦ sitting here, terrified thatā€¦ everything you do is somehow all part of its Grand Planā€¦ And who do you think that fear is gonna feed? ARCHIVIST: Yes, well. [INHALE] You areā€¦ not the first, to make that point.
(MAG157) ARCHIVIST: [LONG INHALE, EXHALE] Thisā€¦ tape was left on my desk. I donā€™t know by who, but to my mind there areā€¦ three options. Martin has left it here, to let me know thatā€¦ whatever the situation is with Peter Lukas, it is entering its final act and he needs my help. Alternatively, Peter may have left it here toā€¦ goad me into action? Or just to gloat, to highlight my helplessness and everything. [SIGH] Or Annabelle Cane is trying to manipulate me into thinking itā€™s one of the other scenarios. Previously, the Spiders have made their presence clear when theyā€™ve sent meā€¦ ā€œhintsā€, but I canā€™t take that for granted. I donā€™t know what to doā€¦!
(MAG158) ARCHIVIST: And I donā€™t keep any of them with the key to the tunnels. Itā€™s been left for me. DAISY: And it says ā€œPlay me.ā€ Kind of suspicious. BASIRA: So Elias left it? ARCHIVIST: Or Martin. Oā€“or Peter, orā€¦ Annabelle!
(And we still donā€™t know who had left the tapes and Adelardā€™s last statement. Peter and Martin didnā€™t mention them, nor did Elias, which indeed leaves The Web for these onesā€¦)
I love that since season 4, Martinā€™s answer tends to be ā€œscrew it, I hate this, byeā€: with Peter and Eliasā€™s live-divorce, with the Lonely house, now with The Web doingā€¦ something to him. Trying to call to him? To make him hear ā€œthe musicā€, as Simonā€™s allegory had described it?
- So Jon has trouble seeing ~the big picture~ of The Web:
And how ~convenient~ that the Vast grandpa wasnā€™t dead by the time of season 4, and is probably Enjoying Sky Blue in a domain of his own:
(MAG151) SIMON: Peter, however, seems to think that it will upset the balance that we all have an awful lot invested in. And heā€™s not at all certain the world as we understand will come out the other side. MARTIN: And let me guess ā€“ you think he canā€™t see the ā€œbig pictureā€? SIMON: [INHALE] I see why he likes you! MARTIN: [SIGH] SIMON: Itā€™s all a matter of perspective, you see. My patron has gifted me withā€¦ quite frankly, an absurdly long life. An appropriate gift, and one that serves to provide a certain distance from things. Of course, a paltry few centuries is nothing, really, but itā€™s more than most get. And even in that brief time, Iā€™ve seen all sorts of ebbs and flows to balance off things.
Weā€™ve yet to cross a Vast domain, Jon said he REALLY didnā€™t want to meet Simon ever, Simon was incredibly smitten with Martinā€¦ there is still hope for Meeting-Simon-in-the-Vast-domain.
(- Sounds like Jon remembers Helenā€™s point about ā€œknowingā€ and ā€œunderstandingā€ being two different things (with Jon adding ā€œseeingā€):
(MAG164) HELEN: And please: my name is ā€œHelenā€. ARCHIVIST: Like you said, I can know everything now. Including how much of a lie that really is. HELEN: Donā€™t mistake ā€œcomplicationā€ for ā€œfalsehoodā€, dear Archivist. ARCHIVIST: [AGGRAVATED EXHALE] HELEN: And remember, that knowledge is not the same thing as understanding.
And now Iā€™m remembering that The Distortion used to be curious about the house on Hill Top Road, but not really able to tell what The Spider was doing thereā€¦ Did Helen get her answers in season 4?)
- Oufft re: Martin&Jonā€™s discussion:
(MAG172) ARCHIVIST: I was going to suggest thatā€¦ I couldā€¦ maybeā€¦ ā€œknowā€. I could look. Just a quick peek, to, to see if it was just curiosity, orā€¦ something else. ā€¦ Well? MARTIN: I donā€™tā€¦ If you look, and I wasā€¦ ā€œinfluencedā€, then how can I trust anything else? How can I believe any of my thoughts and feelings are really mine? ARCHIVIST: Uā€“uh, wellā€¦ Iā€“Iā€“Iā€™ll still be here to check, Iā€“Iā€™m not leaving you. MARTIN: Sure, but youā€™d be looking through the details of everything that ever crosses my mind? I donā€™t want that! Yā€“you know I donā€™t want that. ARCHIVIST: ā€¦ I know. [ā€¦] Soā€¦ Do you want me to? To, to tell you ifā€¦? MARTIN: No. [SIGH] No, Iā€™ll just have to live with it, I guess. Hardly the worst thing Iā€™ll have gone through sinceā€“ ā€¦ I, hum. Iā€“itā€™s fine. [SIGH]
I really liked how it absolutely didnā€™t feel like an argument (and wasnā€™t one!): Martin has objections, has the power to make a decision, and gets the last wordā€¦ since it primarily involves himself. I appreciate that Martin was able to tell the main flaw of Jonā€™s offer ā€“ knowing what is happening could provide a temporary reliefā€¦ but wouldnā€™t offer a sustainable existence for him (if The Web isnā€™t trying to manipulate Martin now, it doesnā€™t mean that it wonā€™t try later, which means that Jon would have to check regularly; and if Martin is under influenceā€¦ indeed, Martin couldnā€™t trust himself anymore, and depending on Jonā€™s power to check everything would turn Martinā€™s existence into a half-life. And it would still feed The Web in the process). Kudos to Jon for his restraint, too, because given his insistence, heā€™s probably curious/afraid about it, but he hasnā€™t broken his promise of avoiding to ā€œknowā€ about Martin and he laid out Martinā€™s options, leaving the decision to him. On that front, theyā€™re doing fine!
Ā  Title for MAG173 very much screams ā€œDark, duh?!ā€ but it feels very easy, so is it a trap. I could see the link if it were Vast or Hunt, too, but really, it just screams Dark. ā€¦ And it could work for a character death episode, but I feel like every title can read like a character death episode one way or another. (Worried about Daisyyyyā€¦)

Day 4 Books (13 Days of Halloween)
There are so many books perfect for reading in the fall. Many people read with Halloween in mind at this time of year and I happen to be one of them from about July through mid November. At this time of year, we gravitate towards Stephen King and now Joe Hill or the latest big name. Sometimes we forget about the classics that started it all or we donā€™t think to look in our own backyard for new favorites.
Today Iā€™m going to share a list of 13 of my favorite spooky classics mixed in with brand new hits on my to read list. And as a bonus, Iā€™m including a list of Rhode Island authors of Supernatural fiction, Mysteries, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror, Thriller, and more to keep you enthralled as we get closer to Halloween.
Letā€™s check them out!
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson
For those who know me well, they know the special love I have for The haunting of Hill House. Last year I even got the crazy opportunity to direct the play at the Rhode Island Stage Ensemble because they knew of my crazy obsession. I might talk about this book too much. That being said, I will keep it brief today. Read it! Go! No, you have not experienced it through Netflix or even the play. Theyā€™re wonderful, amazing interpretations, but they are very different.
To truly know Hill House and the people staying there to study it, you need to read this book and get trapped in the mind of its not quite reliable narrator.
The Turn of the Screw by Henry James
Speaking of Netflix, on this list is another psychological haunted house thriller that has just been made into a streaming hit in The Haunting of Bly Manor.
The Turn of the Screw is a short but not so sweet story with an atmosphere of slowly growing tension. This is a great quick read for a rainy day home alone to get your nerves just the right amount of frayed for when the trick or treaters start knocking.
Dracula by Bram Stoker
Another classic is the travelogue Dracula! With any other title, people would question how a travel journal could be scary, but Dracula needs no introduction. If anything, time and popular culture has added so much to this story that when we go back and look at the original tale we are terrified all over again by the simplicity of atmosphere and characterization over props, costumes, and all the other added layers.
Thereā€™s a scary bit of truth to this tale as well, one that even connects back to Rhode Island! Did you know that Bram Stoker was inspired by the story of Mercy Brown? Yes, news of her tragedy and horrific exhumation made it all the way to London! Stay tuned this week for our 13 Haunted RI Tales for more on Mercy.
Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
While weā€™re in the Victorian Era and talking about classic monsters, we canā€™t forget about Frankensteinā€™s monster! This is another one thatā€™s been taken apart and put back together by so many different writers, directors, and actors that we forget how terrifying the original is.
What really makes this story stand the test of time even past the language changes that can make other stories written in the same period slog along, is Shelleyā€™s understanding of human nature.
We all question the meaning of life and death and Frankenstein has a way of helping our imagination come up with the most terrifying answers.
Edgar Allan Poe
How could we discuss Horror classics without the twisted tales of Edgar Allan Poe? I canā€™t even pick a single story to discuss for this list, just trust me and get a collection of his stories if you donā€™t already own one. You wonā€™t be disappointed.
Haunted houses? Evil animals? Disease? Death? Human Nature? Poe has covered all of the best horror tropes and even invented a few himself. If I had to choose a favorite to start withā€¦ one that sticks with me and makes me shudder to even think about is The Lighthouse. Itā€™s the rats. They get me everytime and unlike the suspense they bring in The Pit and the Pendulum, the rats in The Lighthouse just bring terror and an overall sense of disgust. Happy reading!
His Hideous Heart Edited byĀ Dahlia Adler
While weā€™re on the subject of the laste, great E.A.P. I bring you a fairly recent edition to his fandom.
His Hideous Heart is an anthology put together by 13 well known YA authors for a new, contemporary audience. Edgar Allan Poe may be gone, but his works and their themes have stayed with us and in our classrooms with a love their surprising and unsettling nature.
Contributors include Dahlia Adler (reimagining ā€œLigeiaā€), Kendare Blake (ā€œMetzengersteinā€), Rin Chupeco (ā€œThe Murders in the Rue Morgueā€), Lamar Giles (ā€œThe Oval Portraitā€), Tessa Gratton (ā€œAnnabel Leeā€), Tiffany D. Jackson (ā€œThe Cask of Amontilladoā€), Stephanie Kuehn (ā€œThe Tell-Tale Heartā€), Emily Lloyd-Jones (ā€œThe Purloined Letterā€), amanda lovelace (ā€œThe Ravenā€), Hillary Monahan (ā€œThe Masque of the Red Deathā€), Marieke Nijkamp (ā€œHop-Frogā€), Caleb Roehrig (ā€œThe Pit and the Pendulumā€), and Fran Wilde (ā€œThe Fall of the House of Usherā€).
Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
Continuing to move forward in time, I find myself thinking of Ray Bradbury. Bradbury has a wonderful way of slowly seeping discontent into the reader but with Something Wicked he seems to put pedal to the metal.
This is the only book on my list to feature a nightmarish carnival and Bradbury might be why. I somehow walked away without a fear of clowns or carnivals but reading about themā€¦ still gives me the heebie jeebies. Now that I think about it, this book might have something to do with why mirrors creep me out too.
Readers be warned. Something Wicked This Way Comes has all the marks of a beautifully written coming of age tale, but the themes stick with you like a shadow well into adulthood.
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
If you havenā€™t read this book, you have definitely heard of it. That book with the weird typography, with the backwards words and print in the margins and all that weird stuff? Yes, itā€™s House of Leaves and ā€œall that weird stuffā€ makes for one exciting and unsettling ride. People I give this book two either firmly LOVE it or HATE it, but I recommend it today because 8 out of 10 are on the love side and passing around their copies to others because itā€™s hard not too.
As you read, you follow two stories. The main story is about the Navidson family moving into a new home where some very strange things begin to happen. The second story takes place in the footnotes where we follow a man named Johnny as he finds, reads and obsesses over the first story which is referred to in the book as The Navidson Record. Now, I have set out with the mission of not spoiling anything for anyone today, especially since most the books on this list are of the thriller or suspense genre so I will stop here, but know I really, really want to tell you everything that happens and everything I think of it! Go read this crazy work of art and message me. Weā€™ll talk.
Twelve Nights at Rotter House byĀ J.W. Ocker
I said it earlier and Iā€™ll say it again, I have a soft spot for a good haunted house. Now, haunted by people or haunted by spiritsā€¦ I think both are the best kind. Those who have started reading my series The Monsters Within can probably guess that I love the ā€œHumans are the Monstersā€ horror trope. And, well, nothing brings out the monsters in humans faster than the particular fear that comes with staying in a haunted house. Or at least, a house perceived to be haunted where your mind can play such glorious tricks on you.
Twelve Nights at Rotter House is admittedly slow to start, but I like and recommend this title because that slow pace is there for a reason. We get comfortable when nothing much is happening, when the pace is slow and friendly. I think it makes everything that comes next that much more exciting. Give it a chance and let me know what you think.
The Twisted Ones byĀ T. Kingfisher
The Twisted Ones is a delicious cocktail of Suspense, Thriller, Horror fiction, Psychological Fiction, Occult Fiction. Itā€™s everything I wanted M. Night Shyamalanā€™s The Village to be when the trailers came out back in 2004 and everything it wasnā€™t for me. Add into it the the main character is cleaning a hoarderā€™s house in the woodsā€¦ yeah! Sold, this is creepy and gross and sets off all my alarms, Iā€™m reading it with ALL the lights on.
And somehow, through not being able to put it down and finding myself breathlessly speed reading , I still found time to laugh. There are these little gems in the main characterā€™s personality and the story telling that are so relatable and likeable that it adds an effortless humor on top of the effortless horror. This is the only work Iā€™ve read by this author, but she is absolutely on my follow list and I hope she makes yours as well.
Ninth House byĀ Leigh Bardugo
Some might recognise the name Leigh Bardugo from popular YA fantasies but fear not (or do for that matter) Bardugo can write the hell out of terrifying adult themes. Ninth House is almost impossible to out down in its fast paced, constantly twisting and turning mystery and terrifying ghost story.
[Now, I feel the need to mention before we move on that this is an award winning piece and it is loved by too many to count, BUT if you are on my blog then you may be here because I write about mental health and mental illness and all the emotions dark and light that come with psychology. I try my best to do so in an educated and realistic way that relates back to what Iā€™m going through with good intentions. I try my absolute best to write realistically without including triggers. That being said, as someone who has mental health issues, this story did trigger me. Did I still enjoy the read and do I think you would too, absolutely! I wouldnā€™t have it on my list otherwise. But if you have anxiety, depression, ptsd, or are overcoming assault you may want to do some further research into the adult topics of this novel before reading. Please feel free to ask questions or leave comments regarding this topic. Thank you.]
The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires byĀ Grady Hendrix
Moving into this yearā€™s releases there is the ever popular The Southern Book Clubā€™s Guide to Slaying Vampires. This is another one that seamlessly works in some brilliant comedy into the spooky plot.
Some have compared this to Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula and Iā€™d just like to throw in Buffy the Vampire Slayer as the cherry on that brilliant summary sundae.
Plain Bad Heroines byĀ Emily M. Danforth
I had the pleasure of studying under Emily Danforth while going after my BA in Writing at Rhode Island College. At that point, she had just published The Miseducation of Cameron Post and I was completely enamored. That being said, I have kept up with her writing and oh man am I glad because Plain Bad Heroines was GREAT!
There are so few great additions to their horror genre that I just want to paste gold stars all over this beautifully written, funny, sexy, and utterly disturbing coming of age hit. I hope you love it as much as I did and if you do, be sure to review! This book is brand spanking new and new book sales depend on reviews to help audiences find them. Get out there and post what you liked or even what you didnā€™t about everything you read. In the end, even negative reviews help new readers find something they will enjoy.

Do you think Khessa was a sadist?
I donā€™t think so, no. If I were to pick something from the Dark Tetrad for Khessa, Iā€™d guess she has some light Machiavellian tendencies. They do better in charge than sadists because they take a much longer view than just the next person they can hurt. Thereā€™s a plan to the pain and chaos, and less subjective attachment to hurting others--putting Amaya before the light and sending Viren to be purified were just tasks that kept everyone on their toes, lest that happen to them too.Ā
Tumblr media
Khessa didnā€™t come across as particularly reveling in their pain. She was just maintaining her hold on her control, and these are the tools she uses to do that. Sure, they may hurt people, but in this instance, theyā€™re humans, so who cares?Ā
Tumblr media
But Khessa stlil has her sisterā€™s respect and regard, and Janai is an honorable warrior. She wouldnā€™t follow someone who didnā€™t have enough perspective to keep their people, and Xadia in general, safe.
And I do think there are more layers here, which we may get to see explored in S4 and S5. Khessa has had a rough start. While sheā€™s been ruling the Sunfires for hundreds of years now, and has definitely had time to change her ways if she wanted to, she took over from her grandmother after a mysterious tragedy during which she straight up dropped out of history, leaving her exact fate unknown. Thatā€™s got to be deeply, existentially terrifying to a Sunfire royal, especially when you throw Aaravos into the mix.
We donā€™t know how old Khessa was when she took over, but the younger she is, the more likely it is that she leaned toward a harsher, more extreme take on ruling, out of fear and uncertainty, in order to provide the most stability for herself and her people. can you say homeland security And that apparently included taking up Aditiā€™s purification trial. I donā€™t know about you, but Iā€™m getting a Salem Witch Trials vibe out of that time period--Khessaā€™s not sure who she can trust, so she puts way more people than she needs to in front of the Sunforge. And then if sheā€™s wrong and theyā€™re not tainted, she canā€™t let them go free to tell others sheā€™s putting innocent people to the trial.Ā
Out of such chaos, I can totally see Khessa locking down her queendom with a golden hand in order to maintain control. Sunfires do pride themselves on being the best and the brightest, and she legit does have a border to guard. She might do whatever it took to look the part of a competent queen, because thatā€™s what Xadia needs. Itā€™s a complicated mess, like so many good parts of TDP are.
Hmmmm. Khessa and Viren as Machiavellian mirrors for each other... Yeah, I see it now. That might need to be a meta very soon. Thanks for the ask!

My Top 40 Movies of the Decade
***just my opinion***this list is not set in stone either***
1. 12 Years A Slave (2013)
What Steve McQueen has managed to do with this movie in nothing short of the best thing art is capable of. He takes the horror of humanity and turns it into a heart shattering tale of the best of humanity. A film that could have sunk easily among the brutality it contains, instead soars with Solomonā€™s survival. It is one of the most life-affirming, uplifting works of art Iā€™ve ever seen. It makes you cry, it makes you shout, it makes you cheer, it makes you breathless. In short, all the things movies are best at. Not just a definitive movie, but a definitive work of art.
2. The Act of Killing (2012)
This has my vote for the best documentary film of all time. What begins as a transfixing profile of the mass murders responsible for the 1965 Indonesian genocide quickly transforms into a Brechtian nightmare as director Joshua Oppenheimer somehow convinces these men to stage scenes for a fake movie reenacting their crimes. As the film progresses you can hardly believe what youā€™re witnessing. Horrifying, yet you canā€™t look away. Oppenheimer holds your attention for every second. Whatā€™s captured for film here is truly unique, ground-breaking, soul shaking. A statement about the banality of evil as profound as Ardentā€™s essays.Ā
3. The Tree of Life (2011)
Malick has reached his final form here. An organic art form, pure cinema, visual poetry, whatever you want to call it. Nothing but a movie could be this. The images he crafts here are as close to a religious experience as Iā€™ve ever had watching a movie, and probably ever will. In exploring childhood memories, Malickā€™s style perfectly matches his subject manner. He use of ellipsis and fluidity mirrors the way memories flash through our heads. It is as if we are witnessing memory directly, unfiltered. This movie will move you in ways you didnā€™t know a movie could.Ā
4. The Social Network (2010)
That Facebook movie? Hell yeah that facebook movie. What Fincher and Sorkin have managed to do is take what could be a standard biopic, or dull tech movie, and made it into an epic tale of betrayal, greed, friendship, coming of age, and identity. Ross and Reznorā€™s score pulses, as does the dialogue. This movie starts the instant you press play and it doesnā€™t let you catch your breath for one second until the very end. Endlessly quotable, perfected acted. A masterclass.
5. The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
What can I say about this movie? Every shot is perfect. Every joke, beat, pan, zoom. Well, I guess Iā€™ll say this. This movie disarms with its charm, its facade. But at its heart is a wrenching tale of loss, nostalgia, and the fleeting nature of everything, especially those we love. A jewel of a film. Anderson makes sure youā€™re cozy and then pulls the rug out from under you, and suddenly youā€™re crying.Ā
6. The Master (2012)
Career best performances from Joaquin Phoenix and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Lushly shot. Greenwood delivers another ground breaking score. PTA has made an aimless film about aimless characters that nevertheless is riveting. At the end, you may not know exactly how far youā€™ve progressed, but youā€™re sure glad you went on the journey.Ā
7. Drive (2011)
This is not an action movie. Itā€™s a love story. The now famous dream pop soundtrack. Ryan Gosling doing so much with so little. Refnā€™s breathtaking cinematography. Diluted dreams. Crushed hopes. Silent gazes, filled with more emotion than dialogue could ever render.
8. The Revenant (2015)
An achievement of pure cinematic insanity. I still have no idea how they got some of these shots. A brutal, thrilling story of survival among natureā€™s cruelty. Inarrituā€™s camera is like magic in this film, uncovering the previously thought not possible.Ā
9. La La Land (2016)
A reinvention of a genre that somehow manages to have its cake and eat it too: a nostalgia trip that also subverts expectations. Right up there next to Singinā€™ in the Rain, in my book at least. How on earth was that only Chazelleā€™s second ever movie?Ā
10. The Lighthouse (2019)
TELL ME YE FOND O ME LOBSTER! WHYD YA SPILL YOUR BEANS? IF I HAD A STEAK ID FUCK IT. That about sums it up.
11. Parasite (2019)
Bong Joon Ho has made a beautifully twisted psychological thriller that is also hilarious, touching, and a lasting commentary on class and social mobility.Ā
12. The Florida Project (2017)
Bakerā€™s approach of setting this story from the viewpoint of children makes it a glorious romp through a world of innocence as well as tragedy, and also makes it all the more emotionally impactful.
13. Inside Llewyn Davis (2013)
Itā€™s all about the cat. Alongside the Coenā€™s mastery of dialogue and the side character, as well as the beautiful folk music, this film acts as a deeply moving portrayal of depression, and how sometimes we are our own worst enemy.Ā
14. Moonlight (2016)
Expertly crafted. Expertly acted. Expertly shot. A gorgeously rendered coming of age story. Iā€™m not really the person who should speak of its importance. Iā€™ll just say: it is. Very. A movie that will stun you.Ā
15. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Practical! Effects! Yeah, that really is Tom Hardy swinging fifty feet off the ground on a pole as explosions go off behind him. A feminist, post-apocalypse, road trip movie brought to you by the director of Happy Feet and Babe 2. What more could you want?
16. Moonrise Kingdom (2012)
A wonderful celebration of childhood and of fantasy. Anderson crafts a world you want to return to again and again. Anyone else get jump scared when they realized Lucas Hedges was in this???Ā
17. Arrival (2016)
I love Denis Villeneuveā€™s films for so many reasons. The most important I think is that he balances entertainment and artistic depth so well. Like all great scifi Arrival is not really about aliens, itā€™s about us.Ā
18. Inception (2010)
A film that runs on all cyclinders. Smart, funny, jaw dropping, just plain fun. Nolan manages to build some surprisingly moving moments as well.Ā
19. Gone Girl (2014)
Ah Fincher and his twists. Rosemund Pike at the top of her game. Ross and Reznor return with another gripping score. Around the narrative, Fincher creates a fascinating portrayal of the media and marriage, one with endless twists and turns. You never quite know where itā€™s headed.
20. Sicario (2015)
A second thing I love about Dennis Villeneuve: he does point of view characters better than anyone else.Ā
21. Enemy (2014)
A third thing I love about Dennis Villeneuve: he plays with genre and narrative structure unlike anyone else working right now.
22. Incendies (2010)
A fourth thing I love about Denis Villeneuve: heā€™s given us some of the best female lead characters this decade.
23. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
A fifth thing I love about Denis Villeneuve: he somehow managed make a Blade Runner sequel work. Hereā€™s hoping for Dune.Ā
24. The Look of Silence (2014)
The companion film of The Act of Killing. Oppenheimer does it again, this time focusing more on the victims of the genocide. Groundbreaking cinema.
25. Shame (2011)
Slow clap for Michael Fassbender. Slow clap for Carey Mulligan. Slow clap for Steven Mcqueen.
26. Hereditary (2018)
Using horror to examine mental illness and family trauma. Aster has made a new classic of genre, taking it to new heights.
27. Under The Skin (2014)
How to make a movie about an alien descended onto earth in order to capture men and engulf them in her weird black room of goo? Make a very alienation movie. Chilling. Otherworldly. Haunting.Ā
28. Son of Saul (2015)
In making any holocaust film thereā€™s always the risk of feeling exploitative. Nemesā€™s radical camera work, focusing almost entirely on the main characterā€™s face in close up leaves this concern in the dust. The horrors enter only at the corners of the frame, while humanity is firmly centered the whole time. An important film everyone should see.Ā
29. Whiplash (2014)
As visceral and heart pounding as the solos performed, the film as a whole is a perfectly made portrait of a obsession.Ā
30. Amour (2012)
Haneke takes his unforgiving approach and lays bare a topic with incredible emotional depth. The result is deeply moving without ever being sentimental. Iā€™m hard pressed to find another film about old age that is this poignant.Ā
31. Birdman (2014)
A whirlwind of a film. A high wire act. The long takes turn it into something more akin to a play. A pretty damn good one at that.Ā
32. Once Upon A Time In Anatolia (2011)
Whatā€™s Chekhov doing in the 21st Century? Heā€™s in Turkey. He name is Nuri Ceylan.Ā
33. The Favourite (2018)
Lanthimos turns down his style and turns up his humor. The result is the best of both worlds: a dark, twisted tale of power and a hilarious parody of monarchy and British costume drama.Ā
34. Phantom Thread (2018)
PTA delivers again. What could easily have been another tired tale of the obsessive artist and the woman behind him is instead a fairy tale-ish ensnaring of two peopleā€™s ineffable pull towards each other.Ā
35. A Hidden Life (2019)
Still fresh in my mind. Malickā€™s late style is given the backbone it needed in the form of a relevant tale of resistance and struggle. A meditative, prayer-like film about the power of belief.Ā
36. Prisoners (2013)
A sixth thing I love about Denis Villeneuve: his movies have layers, but only if you look. Otherwise, the ride is pretty great as well.Ā
37. Manchester By The Sea (2016)
A masterclass in doing less with more.Ā
38. Foxcatcher (2014)
Bennett Miller does biopics unlike anyone else. That is to say, maybe better than anyone else working today.Ā
39. The Witch (2015)
Eggersā€™s first foray into historical New England horror. A chilling commentary on the evils of puritanism.
40. The Kid With A Bike (2011)
The Dardenne brothers managed to make a gut-wrenching tale of childhood, masculinity, abandonment, the power of empathy, belonging, and redemption in 84 minutes. Hereā€™s a suggestion. Watch this movie. Then watch it again. A better use of the same amount of time it takes to sit through The Irishman. Oh wait, no you still have 30 minutes left over.Ā

tagged by @ameliabedeliagoesonlineā€‹ to list 10 favorite female characters from 10 different fandoms so hereā€™s some late night ramblings ~
rue/princess kraehe - princess tutu (DELIA Iā€™M GONNA TRY TO BE VAGUE ABOUT THIS TO NOT SPOIL PRINCESS TUTU FOR U LMAO) god i love rue? so much? i love how sheā€™s written as cool on the outside and beautiful but manipulative and jealous but vulnerable and scared but redeemable and loving, and that the story doesnā€™t just throw her away. she keeps fucking up bc sheā€™s just trying to stop things from changing, like any girl would do if the one you love started slowly slipping away from you because of someone else. she thinks sheā€™s got it under control but sheā€™s only so many steps away from crumbling...... god i love rue
xion - kingdom hearts aaaaaaaa xion made such a big impact on me as a kid. kh days was my first kh game so i was very attached to the roxas/axel/xion narrative and the pain that is xion being erased by the end of the game. i especially love how sheā€™s characterized in the kh days manga, the way she feelsĀ like a teenaged girl really stood out to me for some reason. thereā€™s this scene where sheā€™s with roxas and axel and theyā€™re talking about something and i think at this point she knows somethingā€™s sus about her existing in the first place, so when roxas asks her whatā€™s wrong she just kinda passive-aggressively replies? sheā€™s like, oh, yeah, because you two are such good friends. but thereā€™s layers to the fact that she feels like she doesnā€™t belong and i love how that plays into the plot later in the game
panty anarchy - panty & stocking uh iā€™ve had a big ol crush on panty since i first watched psg in 2012 but iā€™m only now able to admit it lmfao. i...... love.... her........ i love how she owns being a bitch, but also how even though sheā€™s not a perfect person at all sheā€™s still not like completely heartless either. i donā€™t think i have anything more profound to say about her because itā€™s psg lmao..... so yeah idk sheā€™s hot? i love her design? i love that sheā€™s dubbed by jamie marchi? i love d. city rock? dfjhgsd
chibiusa - sailor moon i am rini!!!! i swear to god!!!! like ok of course i loved rini as a kid bc sheā€™s the one with the pink hair (my favorite color) and she reminded me of me (my sister is a witness she can verify i literally am rini dfjkhgskdhf) but also now having read sailor moon i just resonate with her whole ass character arc? wanting to grow up into a well-composed and respected Lady but being aware of your shortcomings and being frustrated and insecure about it? not being taken seriously because youā€™re the kid? yeah.
spinel - steven universe uuughhhhhh other friends & drift away broke me. the past four years of my life was just me being angry and sad about being replaced and left behind by someone iā€™d trusted, so when the su movie dropped like literally it couldnā€™t have been better timing. arenā€™t you tired of being Nice? donā€™t you just wanna go apeshit, especially since the way you were apparently wasnā€™t good enough so might as well not be good at all? yeah.
marinette/ladybug - miraculous ladybug oh mari means so much to me!!! truly!!!! (i say that knowing full well i havenā€™t watched ml in like almost a year lmfao oops iā€™ll catch up soon i swear) but i just love the marinette/ladybug dynamic, like sheā€™s a goofball and absolutely cannot function around her crush but sheā€™s still a genuine person and then ALSO she can pull her shit together when she needs to do some superhero saving. i just want the best for her. Iā€™m Care Her
wanda maximoff/scarlet witch - marvel my love for wanda has a lot to do with the timing of me getting into marvel comics/mcu/x-men: evolution being around a messy time in high school for me so i kinda just projected onto wanda hard (so hard that i even made a sona whose character is literally she wants to be the scarlet witch lmao!) itā€™s also just kinda hard to talk about what i love about wanda when there are those three versions of her i mostly think of... i love mcu wandaā€™s tragedy in losing those closest to her, i love x-men:evolution wandaā€™s weirdly super goth design and her conflicting dynamic with pietro, and i really loved the 2015-2016 scarlet witch series of comics. i loved that it focused on her dissonance with who she thought she was up to this point and how much learning that sheā€™s not a mutant affected her (i mean i donā€™t love that sheā€™s notĀ a mutant but whatever thatā€™s a whole other rant entirely), so she puts herself to work on this whole witch thing like hey this is the New Me while simultaneously still running away from the shame and disappointments of her past.
piyoko - di gi charat my daughter! my sweet eight-year-old panda daughter who must absolutely be protected by her three Big Boy Bodyguards as they try to take over the world. thatā€™s it thatā€™s the whole dynamic of Leave It To Piyoko and i loved it as a kid and i love it now oh my GOD have you seen this opening thatā€™s the mid 2000s i-found-this-from-a-local-dvd-rental-place shit i MISS
korra - legend of korra wacky writing issues concerning the whole show itself aside, i love korra as a character a lot. iā€™m definitely biased because the show aired from 8th grade to junior year hs for me and something about that timing just made watching korra grow and struggle and change really stick with me. oh and the fact that she and asami helped me realize iā€™m bi lmao.
rapunzel - tangled my favorite disney princess from my favorite disney movie! especially when i was younger, i too resonated as an artist held up inside dreaming of seeing the world beyond my confinement but not able to because mother knows best
