One-Hit wonders we canât get out of our heads
Not only did the â90s deliver some of the most iconic music during its time, but they also made popular some one-hit wonders that we still love today. A one-hit wonder is either a singer or group that experiences mainstream success with one hit song for a limited amount of time. They tend to be forgotten after a while, but theyâre song does not go unforgotten or unnoticed. â90s one-hit wonders are timeless because although theyâre famous for one specific song, their work still remains relevant to this day. The best thing about â90s one-hit wonders was that they varied in genres, but everyone still enjoyed them altogether even if a certain kind of song wasnât their cup of tea. After I list some of the most iconic one-hit wonders from the â90s, I guarantee you will recognize most of the songs instantly after listening to them.Â
Here are some â90s one-hit wonder songs that make us feel nostalgic even to this day:Â
âJump Aroundâ by House of PainÂ
Even if you donât consider yourself a good dancer, this song will make you a hardcore dancer for 4 minutes straight. If youâre not out of your seat jumping up and down while jamming to this song, then what are you doing with your life? Standing still to this song will make you stand out for the wrong reasons. âJump Aroundâ makes someone want to let loose and forget about the world for a moment.Â
âTubthumpingâ by ChumbawambaÂ
You ever need a song to just lift you back up when someone does something that knocks you down in life? Then you have come to listen to the perfect song. This song definitely defines the 2020 year for everyone while we struggle to deal with everything going on and continue to lose a battle we were never to fight against. But, everyday we keep going and living day by day not letting things beat us down to the ground to the point where we canât get back up. The coronavirus may have knocked us down, but we all get up again fighting it together.
âSemi-Charmed Lifeâ by Third Eye Blind
The hook of this song is something we all remember. Although the song speaks about having an addiction, it mentions that we all need something specific to get us through a moment. Of course, the use of drugs is not the answer to our problems, but you canât help but sing along to this catchy upbeat song. We all need something else to get us through the quarantine life that we are so over. This song was a hit in the summer of â97.Â
âHere Comes the Hotstepperâ by Ini KamozeÂ
This iconic song is known for the classical beat which makes you just want to cruise in the club or during a car ride. Itâs definitely a vibe song when youâre feeling cool and hip for 4 minutes. One of the iconic verses to this song is when Ini Kamoze sings, âIâm the lyrical gangsterâ claiming his song is nothing, but pure talent and meaningful words.Â
âReturn Of The Mackâ by Mark Morrison
Letâs not forget about one of the songs that MADE the â90s. Even young fellows to this day will recognize this song because itâs one their parents always vibe to. This song has even been incorporated in a recent 2020 Google commercial ad recently on YouTube and television. Google reminded you that this song exists. âReturn of the Mackâ is so iconic because it talks about coming back stronger after someone does you wrong. The slow and hard â90s beat makes you want to dance in slow motion holding your drink up high in the air. This is the ultimate grand entrance song!
âInformerâ by SnowÂ
What makes âInformerâ so remarkable was that it was one of the hardest songs to sing along to. The biggest struggle was not knowing every single word of the song and only pronouncing it the way how it sounds. The lyrics almost sound like gibberish. This song inspired a generation for Caucasian hip hop artists such as Vanilla Ice and Eminem. This song joins both the mix of reggae and rap into one masterpiece.
âIce Ice Babyâ by Vanilla IceÂ
Although, this song samples the beat of â80s artist group Queenâs âUnder Pressure,â it regained recognition by the newly incorporated bass line. Not too many Queen fans were in favor of this song when it first came out because of how similar it sounds to Queenâs work. Many did not react well to Vanilla Iceâs hit, but he was one of the first artists to make an iconic song while sampling anotherâs work. Nowadays, everybody samples what they see in movies, music, and TV shows.Â
âKiss Meâ by Sixpence None The Richer
If youâre looking to listen to that cheesy â90s romantic song when youâre feeling vulnerable with the one you love, this is the perfect song to help you out. Many people incorporate this song in their weddings and even in â90s chic flick films. I wish I was around to experience what young â90s love felt like when couples actually went out and did things together without the use of cellphones. You may have heard of this song in the iconic rom-com âSheâs All that.âÂ
âMambo No.5âł by Lou BegaÂ
Party songs were what made the â90s so fun and fresh. This was back when people werenât so shy to dance however they wanted to. As long as you feel the beat and rhythm, you are unstoppable while dancing to this song. The combination of the choreography, Lou Begaâs voice, instruments, and upbeat hook will get you dancing out of your seat to feel that combination of jazz and R&B rhythm.
âMacarenaâ (Bayside Boys Remix) by Los Del Rioâ
There is always that one song that is played at every prom, wedding, party, pep rally, and other social events. The âMacarenaâ was both the song and dance that took over the world which everyone knows. Although many people did not understand the Spanish lyrics, it didnât mean they couldnât dance to the rhythm and beat of the âMacarena.â Whenever I would hear this song at school or at a party, I would instantly remember the dance moves and know what to do. Even though the song became popular in 1993, to this very day adolescents are familiar with the song as well and know the âMacarenaâ by heart.

Technology: from toy to...
Marc Andreessen, developer and venture capitalist: âThe dot com crash hit in 2000 and then all the dot com ideas that were viewed as genius in 1998 were viewed as complete lunacy and idiocy in 2000 [...] All those ideas are working today. I canât think of a single idea from that era that isnât working today. The kicker to the Pets.com story is there is [a] company Chewy that sold for over $3 billion [...] like two weeks ago.â 15-odd years later, have these ideas started working because there are a thousand times more people online with internet connections a thousand times faster? Or did it take time for these ideas to make sense to users?
Many new ideas start off looking like nothing, like mere toys, or something for kids, or just broken. Most of them probably are nothing, but some go on to be something significant. Ben Evansâs long piece has a go at how you might evaluate new ideas. Instead of that âItâs a toy/itâs nothingâ âWell, many things started off as toysâ conversation, you might consider whether you can see a way to push it in a direction that (you reckon) will be forward - a roadmap. Secondly, you might look at the underlying capability rather than the current guesses about how it applies to user needs and desires.
That said, evaluating whether there is a roadmap at the time is harder than it will be in hindsight. And trying to explore future user needs and desires is still very useful: looking at capability rather than use/need has risks. Think about blockchain, a capability that promises distinctive benefits - such as distributed, tamper-proof auditability - but is it something thatâll transformative and ubiquitous, or is it merely the current excitement? Tim Bray looks for signs in its adoption today: âIâve seen wave afÂter wave of landscape-shifting techÂnolÂoÂgy sweep through the IT space [... and] withÂout exÂcepÂtion, I obÂserved that they were iniÂtialÂly loadÂed in the back door by geekÂs, withÂout askÂing perÂmisÂsion, beÂcause they got shit done and helped peoÂple with their jobÂs. Thatâs not hapÂpenÂing with blockchain. Not in the slightÂest. Which is why I donât beÂlieve in it.â

Uber re-invents buses; Tesla - cyclists âwill dieâ
Uber news catchup! Its multi-passenger UberPool service is becoming a dynamic-drop off constrained-location service, or what you might call âsome bus routesâ. Instead of running its own transit system, a Canadian town has contracted with Uber to subsidise journey prices. Uber has added a new dimension to its pricing rules - it has started charging users what it reckons theyâre prepared to pay, but isnât passing the additional margin onto drivers. Meanwhile, Uber has fired the engineer alleged to have taken trade secrets from former employer Google to his startup Otto, which Uber bought last year.
Two robotics engineers review Tesla Autopilot. âThe Situation Awareness Display is great because it helps the driver understand shortcomings of the car, i.e., its perception sucks. Providing the driver an accurate mental model of the system probably saves lives, and robots in general would benefit from communicating their limitations to people.â Interesting: you can see how passionate Teslafans are by the grumpiness of their comments. Related: some ideas about making it clear when and how machines make decisions.

Machine Learning but no love in your inbox
Googleâs mobile Gmail app has a thing called SmartReply which reads the content of the email and suggests three responses that you might like to start your reply with. It saves you time. Some technical detail. âAnother bizarre feature of our early prototype was its propensity to respond with âI love youâ to seemingly anythingâ - it seems a shame that that was beaten out of it.
.
Rebuild & Renew generation
A terrible experience sets your habits and behaviour for life. Thereâs a term in investing - âdepression babiesâ - for the generation who were scarred by the stock market crash and never returned to investing in stocks. Consequently the stock market had to wait for a new investing generation before it recovered. Is the opposite true? Could working at the Co-op for a few years create a foundation that pushed your future career in the direction of social benefit? A generation of digital people biased to do good.

Warrington council is investing ÂŁ30m in Redwood Bank to boost business lending locally - âan experiment in banking that may provide a post-Brexit road map for cities struggling with twin declines in lending to small businesses and funding from the national governmentâ. Bold, hopefully not risky.
Edinburgh credit unions merge to form Castle Community Bank - a financial co-op with a banking licence.

Tescoâs Now service is using Starship robots to one-hour deliver food from its stores to locations within 3 miles of stores. âStarship is running commercial delivery pilot programmes in the US, the UK, Germany, Switzerland and Estonia with partners like Just Eat, Hermes, Metro Group, Swiss Post, Wolt and others.â Previously.
Instagram is the most harmful social network for your mental health - but Youtube is a net positive (harder to Photoshop videos?)
Google Lens: a camera that knows what itâs seeing. Pinterest Lens: a camera that knows what meal itâs seeing.
Aviva has invested 5m in smart home insurance startup Neos - its connected devices will monitor the home for fire, water damage and theft.
âMarks & Spencerâs lack of digital urgency is costing it dearlyâ.
Amazon has patented a shipping label which includes a parachute for use in deliveries by flying drone. (Zipline already delivers blood by drone-and-parachute in Rwanda). Â
Google-owned mapping app Waze is expanding its car pooling service to cover California, though itâs being careful not to tread on Uber and Lyftâs toes (yet?).

Saudi Iranian rivalry polarises Nigerian Muslims
By James M. Dorsey
A podcast version of this story is available on Soundcloud, Itunes, Spotify, Stitcher, TuneIn, Spreaker, Pocket Casts, Tumblr, and Patreon, Podbean and Castbox.
A recent ban on a militant, Iranian-backed Shiite group raised the spectre of the Saudi Iranian rivalry spilling onto Nigerian streets as security forces launched a manhunt to find the alleged Boko Haram operatives who killed 65 people attending a funeral.
Nigeria, Africaâs foremost oil producer, banned the Iranian-backed Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) this weekend after demonstrations in the capital Abuja to free its leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky turned violent. At least six people were killed.
âThe Saudis watching the Iranians trying to break into northern Nigeria is almost like watching someone else try to befriend your best friend,â said Ini Dele-Adedeji, a Nigerian academic at the University of Londonâs School of Oriental and African Studies, referring to the regionâs religious elites that have aligned themselves with the kingdom.
Saudi cables released in 2015 by WikiLeaks reveal concern about Iranian-funded Shiite expansion in West African and Sahel nations including Mali, Mauritania, Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
Mr. Dele-Adedji said Saudi and Iranian funding was âon the surfaceâŚabout these countries helping out with âcharitable workâ activities. But beyond that itâs also a way for those countries to almost create extensions of themselves.â
Mr. El-Zakzaky, a Sunni Muslim student activist inspired by the 1979 Iranian revolution, initially agitated for a repeat in his native Nigeria. When that didnât work, Mr. El-Zakzaky went to Iran, converted to Shiism, and started wearing the white turban of a Shiite cleric.
Returning home in the 1990s, he became the leader of the Islamic Movement and turned it into a vehicle for proselytizing and gaining followers.
Things got out of hand when Nigerian troops killed hundreds of Shiites in the ancient university town of Zaria in December 2015 and arrested Mr. El-Zakzaky and hundreds of his followers. The army accused the Shiite group of attempting to kill Nigeriaâs army chief-of-staff, a charge the movement denies.
Iran has been funding Mr. El-Zakzaky for years and the area of Zaria he worked in became the âmecca for the dispossessed in Nigeria,â according to Matthew Page, a former U.S. State Department specialist on Nigeria. The Islamic Movement has been receiving about $10,000 a month from Iran, he estimated.
Mr. El-Zakzaky used the money to fund soup kitchens and homeless shelters, Mr. Page said. âThis was a very inexpensive way for Iran to have a toehold in Nigeria,â he said.
Ghanem Nuseibeh, founder of London-based consultants Cornerstone Global Associates estimated that Mr. El-Zakzakyâs organization operates more than 300 schools, Islamic centres, a newspaper, guards and a âmartyrsâ foundation.â The network is similar to welfare systems established elsewhere by Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed groups.
The Nigerian government first declared the Islamic Movement a security threat in 2017, comparing it with the Boko Haram insurgency, according to Nigerian diplomats.
Peregrino Brimah, a trained medical doctor who teaches biology, anatomy and physiology at colleges in New York never gave much thought while growing up in Nigeria to the fact that clerics increasingly were developing links to Saudi Arabia.
âYou could see the money, the big ones were leading the good life, they ran scholarship programs. In fact, I was offered a scholarship to study at King Fahd University in Riyadh. I never thought about it until December 2015 when up to a 1,000 Shiites were killed by the military in northern Nigeria. Since I started looking at it, Iâve realized how successful, how extraordinarily successful the Wahhabis have been.â Mr. Brimah said.
He decided to stand up for Shiite rights after the incident in which the military arrested Mr. El-Zakzaky.
The Nigerian military said that it had attacked sites in Zaria after hundreds of Shia demonstrators had blocked a convoy of Nigeria's army chief General Tukur Yusuf Buratai in an effort to kill him.
Military police said Shiites had crawled through tall grass towards General Burataiâs convoy "with the intent to attack the vehicle with [a] petrol bomb" while others "suddenly resorted to firing gunshots from the direction of the mosque.â
A phone call to Nigerian President Mohammed Buhari in which King Salman expressed his support for the governmentâs fight against terrorist groups was widely seen as Saudi endorsement of the militaryâs crackdown on the countryâs Shiite minority.
The state-owned Saudi Press Agency quoted King Salman as saying that Islam condemned such âcriminal actsâ and that the kingdom in a reference to Iran opposed foreign interference in Nigeria.
Mr. Brimahâs defense of the Shiites has cost him dearly, illustrating the degree to which Saudi-funded ultra-conservatism and Iranian agitation has altered Nigerian society.
âI lost everything I had built on social media the minute I stood up for the Shiites. I had thousands of fans. Suddenly, I was losing 2-300 followers a day. My brother hasnât spoken to me since. The last thing he said to me is: âhow can you adopt Shiite ideology?â I raised the issue in a Sunni chat forum. It became quickly clear that these attitudes were not accidental. They are the product of Saudi-sponsored teachings of serious hatred. People donât understand what they are being taught. They rejoice when a thousand Shiites are killed. Even worse is the fact that they hate people like me who stand up for the Shiites even more than they hate the Shiite themselves.â
In response to Mr. Brimahâs writing about the clash, General Buratai invited him for a chat. Mr. Brimah politely declined. When Mr. Brimah reiterated his accusation, General Burataiâs spokesman, Colonel SK Usman, adopting the Saudi line of Shiites being Iranian stooges, accused the scientist of being on the Islamic republicâs payroll.
âSeveral of us hold you in high esteem based on perceived honesty, intellectual prowess and ability to speak your mind. That was before, but the recent incidentâŚand subsequent events and actions by some groups and individuals such as you made one to have a rethink. I was quite aware of your concerted effort to smear the good name and reputation of the Chief of Army Staff to the extent of calling for his resignation,â Colonel Usman said in an email to Mr. Brimah that the activist shared with this writer.
General Buratai âwent out of his way to write to you and even invited you for constructive engagement. But because you have dubious intents, you cleverly refusedâŚ. God indeed is very merciful for exposing you. Let me make it abundantly clear to you that your acts are not directed to the person of the Chief of Army Staff, they have far reaching implication on our national security. Please think about it and mend your ways and refund whatever funds you coveted for the campaign of calumny,â Colonel Usman said.
Mr. Brimahâs inbox has since then been inundated with anti-Shiite, anti-Iranian writings in what he believes is a military-inspired campaign.
Mr. Brimahâs predicament reflects the fallout of the Saudi Iranian rivalry in West Africa as a result of Saudi and Iranian funding that has let the genie of intolerance, discrimination and bigotry out of the bottle.
Issoufou Yahaya, in the Sahel state of Niger, recalls his student days in the 1980s when there wasnât a single mosque on his campus. âToday, we have more mosques here than we have lecture rooms. So much has changed in such a short time,â he said.

was and now situation
this 2017 iâll turn 27 in December an age that some people said âYOU HAVE TO BECOME SOMEONEâ
sometimes i ask myself : am i still doing what i love, today? do i really do it right? do i still wanna do this?
too many questions and the answers are still post-poned in my head easy to ask, hard to answer
back in 2009 when i started my very first career as a 19-years-old radio broadcaster. i didnt implant anything in my head back then or event have ANY motivation to apply myself to become a radio broadcaster or radio DJ (some people say).
kaget. bingung. seneng. 3 mixed feelings in a body happening to me i wanted to say i was HAPPY, but on the other hand, i feel really weird because i got a job in a very young age. and im still in college.
what i watched from Hollywood movies 17-years-old teen left the house and begin their young adult life. just FYI. so no hard feelings.
dont ever messed with your boss. dont even think about messed with your seniors. do your job. dont do stupid things. if you do something WRONG. just except it. that mean you did something dumb and you just gotta admit it. you messed up again. fixed it. you messed up again. ask, why the heck you always done it wrong. and then youâll understand. trust me, this method is SUPER RIGHT. didnt mean to teach you how to walk on your life, just wanted to share mine.
but when it comes to 2013 i met MORE new people. this time, i was 'kinddaâ on top. its because i have new responsibility. not just a regular radio DJ, but also a producer, a music director and somewhat, a senior in a place where i work at.
nambah lagi deh orang orang baru. so glad meeting up with them. teach them how to act right in a job like this. trust me, it sound super cool when you heard it like that. but to walk with it, sucks.
tahun 2014 ini jadi tahun dimana orang orang sudah mulai krisis âmenghargaiâ. muncul-lah generasi âsocial climberâ kalo bahasa kerennya. juniors and seniors are equal.
why the heck am i saying that? because at this year. i become a boss who doesnt event have a strenght to mad at people. i was soft. weak. and i give too many options to people whoâs working under me.
i feel like nobody appriciate me anymore. i feel like my goodness was USED. i feel like i was this shining boss but has no worthy. what the heck, huh?
kepikiran ga sih punya bawahan yang di suruh sesuatu yang berhubungan dengan pekerjaan & mereka punya alasan âengga bisaâ karena: - i already had an appointment with my friends, - i already set today is my time with my boy/girlfriend, - i have to pick up my parents, - i have to attend classes at my college, - i have upcoming shows with my band so i gotta practice, - why me? why not find someone else? i just cant, - im still at home, i cant make it
what the heck huh? i have to deal with that kindda reasons.
oooh hereâs one thing thats f*cked up. when i FINALLY CAUGHT someone doing WRONG THING, and that person is being pointed as GUILTY. and the highest priority boss find it out. dia bukannya malah mengakui kalau dia memang melakukan kesalahan, malah pasang muka âdasar tukang ngadu ke bossâ. atau lebih parah⌠âjijik kali aku sama diaâ kindda face.
i was born in the 90s. and what i have in mind right now. i think its so hard to find a person that âtau diriâ.
have you ever felt your this NOT A FUN PERSON? thats very sucks indeed. being a boss. i suck.
khususnya kalo kamu jadi atasan yang bawahnnya punya cerita di atas. i feel you. and thats really suck.
i really are not a motivator.. but i really wanted to share this.. if you love what you do, itâll KILL anything that makes you want to stop loving what your doing
just like WONDER WOMAN movie said âit is love that keeps you strongerâ bleh bleh bleh cheesy sh*t but its right tho (haha)
