Was able to see a doctor today and it’s a clogged gland inside my eyelid 🤢
Thank god my husbands insurance is amazing. The doctor quoted me the medicated ointment at $70 but it was only $0.90.
Not me waking up to an inflamed eyelid/potential tear duct infection and my optometrist being closed until tomorrow 😫
#but literally the US healthcare system is so fucked. like why am I paying less money because my husband works for a…#very difficult to get hired at company with good benefits#like this should be 90 cent medication for everyone??#if this was even five years ago I wouldn’t have been able to afford the $70 that it likely would have been on my companies insurance#I’d be stuck with a swollen shut eye for months on end#how fucked is that???#anyway#I digress#I should be healed within a week

Restrictions return for New Brunswick students, leaving some to question if they were removed too soon
Rising cases in New Brunswick have doctors concerned that all restrictions were removed too soon.
Dr. Zahid Butt, a physician and infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Waterloo, says since the Delta variant spreads fast, it's important to stay ahead of the virus.
"(What) we are seeing is that until … you achieve a very high vaccination rate, and I would say probably 90 per cent, then only maybe you can limit the transmission by vaccines only," says Butt.
Restrictions are already returning to schools this coming week.
"The fact that we know there is an increased risk of student-to-student transmission because the Delta variant affects young people more seriously than previous editions of COVID, we are taking more aggressive steps (this time) around. For example, with one case moving the school online right away," said Dominic Cardy, minister of education.
On Monday, measures coming into effect include using classroom groupings, physical education classes will be taught outdoors, weather permitting, and indoors wearing masks, as well as assemblies will no longer be permitted.
"Steps like that are part of recognizing that Delta is more dangerous for young people and that means for the community, because the more that we have the spread of the Delta variant the more we end up with people, mainly unvaccinated - 80 per cent plus of our cases are mainly unvaccinated - the more those folks end up in hospital," said Cardy.
On Saturday, Vitalité Health Network sent out a press release saying visits are suspended at the Medical-Surgical Unit of the Campbellton Regional Hospital due to the presence of COVID-19 cases. They say the ban will remain in place until further notice.
"The amount of cases we have lately, it really is probably a good thing to bring (masks) back. We just want to make sure that everyone is healthy and thanksgiving is just around the corner. We want to make sure that we can see our families,” said Emma Keefe, a post-secondary student in Fredericton.
Until the province is at least 90 per cent fully vaccinated, Dr. Butt says restrictions should be in place.
"You will have to rely on public health measures I would say like testing, tracing, and isolation, mask mandates and limits on indoor and outdoor gatherings. So that, as I said, would be the way to go in New Brunswick,” said Dr. Butt.
Vaccination appointment bookings tripled late in the week following an announcement on proof of full vaccination when accessing certain events, services and businesses, and that anyone entering New Brunswick must pre-register their travel.

So now that I've got a good sample size (which said roughly what I expected), I'll further elaborate on this scenario. Here’s the situation.
My dad is rewriting his will because previously it just left everything to my mom, but my mom has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and isn’t in a position to just inherit everything and know what to do with it. My dad has three kids, as follows:
My older brother (49): a software engineer who got into computer programming in the late 90’s, so, just as it was becoming a super awesome job that paid a lot of money. His wife has an equally well paying job. They have two kids. They are extremely well-off. My brother could literally retire today and have enough money for the rest of his life, including sending both his kids to college without school loans. Their home is worth well over a million dollars. Yes, they have worked hard to get where they are. No question.
My older sister (46): a legal biller who is paid fairly well but did not start that job until somewhat late in her life (about 5 years ago), after an exciting history of retail jobs, working at Comcast tech support, and then working for my dad as a medical biller for several years. Single, no kids, owns a condo which sucks.
Me (43): a medical biller who is paid less well because I work at a non-profit. Also only started that job about 5 years ago. The reason for that is because I ran my dad’s medical office for about 13 years. Married (yay!) with no children. Wife also worked for my dad in the front office for over ten years, is now disabled. Over the years, we have been in and out of medical debt due to my wife’s issues. We own a home, the mortgage of which won’t be paid off until I’m seventy lmao.
Point of note: it is not possible to know what my career path would have looked like had I not chosen to work for my dad. I did not do this because I could not get a job of my own (I had one, just disliked it), but because he specifically asked me to do it because he was having difficulties with the staff he had hired. Yes, obviously, he paid me to work for him. I probably could have made more money in another job but I never had an issue with that because I genuinely liked working there and keeping things running smoothly for him. My father was a doctor who owned his own practice and I can say with absolute confidence that it would not have been as successful were it not for me (and for my wife and sister).
Second point of note: my father has helped all of us with major purchases over our lives. He helped my brother buy his first condo. He bought my sister her first car after the one she inherited from our grandmother died. He gave me a considerable amount of money to use as a down payment on my home. He helped my brother buy their current McMansion. Et cetera. I would say it has been roughly even between the three of us and if we get into dollars and cents, it’s likely my sister who has received the least in monetary assistance from him over the years.
Third point of note: all three of us have always gotten along fairly well with my dad, although he is not super demonstrative in his affection. However, his relationship with my brother has soured of late because they bought the million dollar home together, with the idea that my parents would live with them, help with childcare, et cetera, and in return my brother would help out more as they got older. That … did not happen, and my dad has been very salty about the fact that my brother and his family treated him more like a live-in servant. (My personal opinion is that once you hit seventy years old and help your son buy a million dollar home, you should be exempt from chores, but apparently my brother does not share this opinion.) (At one point my father had cataract surgery and couldn’t do much for a few days afterwards and literally nobody did the dishes. He had to do everyone’s dishes after recovery. Yikes on bikes, but tbh, typical behavior of my brother and his family).
So my position, genuinely, was that the fairest thing to do would be to split things evenly between the three of us. I had always assumed this is what my father would do and had no issues with that. My father is the one who brought up the idea of splitting his estate based on the level of need. Obviously, my need is greatest, and my dad specifically said he wants to be sure I will be okay in my old age, as I have no kids to look after me and only started my retirement fund a few years ago (he didn’t offer a 401K when I worked for him, LOL).
Apparently when he mentioned it to my brother, my brother was vehemently opposed to the idea of splitting the estate based on need and said my sister and I “made our choices”, which made me change my opinion from “my dad should do what’s fair” to “fuck that guy in particular”.
I still think the “fair” thing to do is split the estate evenly, but now I’m really mad at my brother lol, so my dad told me to think about it for a few days before I give him my opinion. I am well aware that if my dad divides his estate in a way that gives more to me (and/or my sister) it will likely ruin my relationship with my brother (not with my sister who already said she would give me her share if I needed it, which, yes, made me cry). Maybe I should be worried about that but I’m really not (see all hundred of my previous posts about my brother’s insensitive dickery for context).
So yeah. That’s the entire sitch. Still pondering what I should tell my dad, beyond “it’s your will, you can do whatever feels right to you, I won’t be upset either way”.
this is legitimately a question my father asked me yesterday. I'm not going to give a lot of detail because I want everyone's gut reactions - obviously the situation is not super simple but that's the base question!

Wholesale Gym Equipment, Exercises to Lose Weight Fast
If you're one of the approximately 67% of Americans that are wired into the internet, there‘s’ a good chance that sometime in the last 24 hours you're received at least one spam email promoting the latest and greatest diet pill or weight loss program.
These diet products promise fast weight loss results, often without any effort or exercise. The never-ending promise of a weight loss pill that actually works keeps us hoping for eventual success.
At the same time, we're continually inundated with news of the most recent diet and how this time it‘s’ really going to work for us.
The South Beach Diet, the Zone Diet, the Atkins Diet, the Low Carb Diet, the Cabbage Soup Diet, the Mediterranean Diet, the LA Weight Loss Diet, the Weight Watchers Diet, the Diabetic Diet, the Low Cholesterol Diet, the Prescription Pill Diet, the 3 Day Diet, the Low Fat Diet, the High Protein Diet, the Maker Diet, the Liquid Diet, the Grapefruit Diet, the Fad Diet, the Blood Type Diet, the GI Diet, the Vegetarian Diet, the Vegan Diet, the Detox Diet, the Dash Diet, the Candida Diet, the Gluten Free Diet, the Hollywood Diet, the Negative Calorie Diet, the 1200 Calorie Diet, the Raw Food Diet, the Phentermine Diet, the High Fiber Diet, the Macrobiotic Diet, the Science Diet, the Lemonade Diet, the Scarsdale Diet, the Diverticulitis Diet and the Fat Flush Diet are all examples of diet plans that promise to help us achieve quick weight loss.
Crash diets, weight loss pills and get-thin-quick gimmicks are more prevalent than ever, yet two-thirds of our population is still overweight. Even more startling is the fact that approximately one-third of the people in our country are clinically obese.
With all of these solutions?available to us, why is it that obesity trends have been alarming enough to prompt the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) to label obesity a national epidemic? Why are we still, as a nation, getting fatter? It‘s’ certainly not because we're not trying.
On the contrary, as a nation, we're trying harder than ever to lose fat through diet and other weight loss products. As reported by CNN on 1-14-05 揂mericans were expected to spend more than $40 billion in 2004 on weight control pills, gym memberships, diet plans, and related foods estimate Marketdata Enterprises, which studies the weight loss industry.? Furthermore, statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicate that 80 percent of overweight individuals and almost 87 percent of obese individuals are trying to lose or maintain their weight.
As reported by mygoals.com, 80 percent of Americans made a New Year‘s’ resolution in 2005. A whopping 26 percent of those resolutions were to improve overall health and fitness, making this the top category for self-improvement. This year was no anomaly, either, according to Amy O'Connor, deputy editor of Prevention magazine: "Fifty-nine million people every year resolve to lose weight."
So, is there a healthy diet product out there that will actually work? More than likely, the answer is yes. Although there is quite a bit of fraudulent weight-loss merchandise on the market today, there is also (somewhere out there) a diet program and weight loss plan that will work for us. The challenge is to find that diet product or diet plan.
-> Repeat Business
The diet and weight loss industry is a huge money-making machine. According to Marketdata Enterprises, the annual revenue for the diet industry was over $30 billion dollars in 1990. A 2005 report by Stanford University documents that the consumer diet industry is now approximately $44 billion and growing. With all this money flowing around, haven's we as a country spent enough to fix the obesity problem once and for all?
How can the diet industry keep making more and more money, year after year? After all, $44 billion dollars is a lot of cash! The answer to that question is simple: repeat business. ?8% of today‘s’ dieters gain the weight back in 5 years. 90% of those individuals end up gaining back more than they lost originally, due to the body‘s’ panic and efforts to stabilize metabolic rates over the long term? (Source: Stanford University; stanford.edu).
How do the diet-promoters get all that repeat business? The diet industry is a very unique enterprise in that, when it fails someone, they rarely blame the product. We are hard-pressed to find another business where, if the product doesn's work, we blame ourselves. All too often, after giving up on yet another diet program, we find ourselves thinking well, I guess it’s just not a good enough dieter.?The tendency is for us to believe that we failed the diet rather than the other way around. Weight Loss Exercise, Wholesale Gym Equipment & Wholesale Fitness Equipment https://www.fitness-china.com/wholesale-gym-equipment
Apply this same logic to the automotive industry, and it soon becomes clear just how faulty this line of reasoning really is. What would happen if we take our car in to the mechanic for repairs and when we returned to pick it up he told us that although we still had to pay the bill, he was unable to fix the problem? Would we willing pay the bill anyway and just say h well, I guess it‘s’ just a bad car??Of course not! That would be ridiculous! But that‘s’ exactly what we do when it comes to diets.
-> One Size Does Not Fit All
What we need to realize is that there is probably a weight loss product or weight loss plan out there that will work for us, but it may not be the same one our friends or co-workers used. To find the best weight loss program for us, we absolutely must realize that one size does not fit all. What worked for our sibling or spouse may not work for us, and what works for us may not work for them. It‘s’ probably safe to say that any diet supplement has helped somebody, but it‘s’ also true that no weight loss drug or plan has helped everybody. Each person has a unique metabolism and very individual nutritional needs, so no single plan will work for everyone.
-> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Diet
Some fat burner products on the market today do indeed work. Others are a complete rip-off. How do you tell the difference? Where do you go for accurate and reliable weight loss information?
First and foremost, talk with your doctor. Your own personal physician is likely to be honest with you and provide you with the facts. In addition, he or she can help you decide which weight loss supplement may be right for your personal situation. There are also quite a few reputable organizations that provide accurate information on fat loss. Some of the better resources include:

When seeking a healthy weight loss plan, it‘s’ important that no food be strictly forbidden. There should not be any (or many) foods that we avoid completely 100% of the time. Why? Because that sets us up for failure! For example, if fudge is one of our favorites and we force ourselves to NOT eat fudge at the holiday party, then for many of us what we've done is set ourselves up for a binge fudge-festival.
Avoiding our favorite foods entirely is too much self-deprivation for most people, and this sets us up for binge-eating. That's a recipe for disaster! A much better approach is to enjoy foods in moderation. Watch those serving sizes! Enjoy and savor one piece of fudge! It's better to enjoy one piece of fudge and then stop than attempt to deprive ourselves entirely, only to end up eating the whole pan.
A good diet and nutrition program will also help us keep in mind the cost of the foods we eat. We're not talking about dollars and cents here, but the FITNESS cost of the food. When picking up that fudge, keep in mind what it will cost to enjoy it. When picking up a plate at the buffet table, let's take a moment to pause and think to ourselves: "The cost of this fudge will be an extra _____ minutes of exercise.....is that worth it to me?" Maybe. Maybe not. That's for each of us to decide on our own.
Wholesale Gym Equipment and Keep Exercise and Physical Fitness
The point is that we should be conscious of our food decisions. No foods are forbidden entirely, but we do need to watch our portion sizes and carefully consider the cost of each food. Any good weight management program will incorporate these concepts and also will be approved by your doctor. One such plan is the Running Start weight loss program offered by Pick Up The Pace. This nutrition program has six 12-week uses. You can use them all yourself, one after another, or share with a friend. The program has weekly updates, menus you can personalize, and printouts. The menu selector counts calories, protein, carbs and fat. The foods list is among the most comprehensive on the market.

-> How To Find The Right Weight Loss Supplement
Perhaps even more so than with weight-loss diets, when searching for weight loss supplements it is critical to rely on the advice of your physician. The careful and supervised use of weight loss diet pills, combined with a sensible diet and regular exercise, can lead to quick weight loss and even easy weight loss (or at least easier than you expected).
Beware, however, the supplement scams on the market. It seems that every time we turn around we are blasted and bombarded with the latest, greatest, new and improved treatment for obesity. The gimmicks just keep coming. The sad truth is that few of these products work. Even fewer will result in real, permanent and lasting fat loss. A very few of the weight loss gimmicks on the market today are not only a consumer rip-off, but they are also quite dangerous.....even deadly.
Wholesale Fitness Equipment Optimize Your Health and Weight Loss
As an example, consider the prescription diet drug Meridia. Does it help you lose weight? For some people, the answer is yes. For others, the answer is no. Can it kill you? The answer to this question seems to be a nervous 'maybe'. "The consumer group Public Citizen had petitioned the Food and Drug Administration for a ban, citing Meridia users who died of heart problems as young as their 20s and 30s. Even before Meridia was approved for sale, the FDA knew it could increase users' blood pressure, the group contended." (Source: cnn.com) This week the FDA again refused to ban Meridia, even though whistleblower David Graham (an FDA drug safety officer) testified to Congress last fall that his agency was allowing five unsafe medicines to stay on the market, including Meridia.

Yes, ephedra will help some people lose weight. Yes, ephedra is safe for some people in low doses. But there is that little nagging fact that people have DIED and that their deaths have been attributed to ephedra use.....
Yet another example of a dangerous diet drug is steroids. For whatever reason, some people have decided that anabolic steroids are the best way to lose weight. Despite the well-documented and serious side-effects of steroid use, the lure of easy weight loss has caused many to throw caution to the wind. Perhaps the most concerning trend is steroid use among our teenage population: "Teens also listed steroids, growth hormone, amino acids and other potentially unhealthful products among those they'd tried in the previous year." (Source: cnn.com)
There do exist, however, some diet supplements that work and are also quite safe. Again, it is never a good idea to begin any supplementation program without first seeking the advice and approval of your doctor.
Three popular and dependable fat loss products designed to help you lose weight fast are ChromeMate, Lipotropic Plus, and Super L-Carnitine. Chromium helps insulin metabolize fat, turn protein into muscle and convert sugar into energy. ChromeMate, a unique form of niacin-bound chromium, is designed to optimize energy output. It accomplishes this by increasing the amount of glucose available for energy production nearly twenty-fold.
It also is the "master" nutrient for controlling blood sugar, which in turn curbs sugar cravings. What‘s’ more, a study at Auburn University showed that ChromeMate reduced LDL cholesterol by an average of 14%. In fact, ChromeMate has been awarded a patent for lowering cholesterol.

Without it, fat is unable to penetrate the walls of the mitochondria of the muscle cells. Carnitine is the shuttle that carries fat into your body‘s’ furnaces (muscles) to be burned for energy. Super L-Carnitine increases the rate of fat utilization for fuel.

In this article, we've been discussing weight-loss diets and weight loss supplements. At this point, it is essential that we add the third and most important component of overall health and fitness: exercise. Exercise is one weight loss method that has never been banned, has never led to an investigation, and has never been listed on a 'whistleblower' fraud report. Exercise is the only path to health and fitness that virtually every doctor in the world agrees upon. Exercise is safe, effective, and brings many more benefits to our lives than diets or drugs ever will alone.
Exercise is fun, invigorating, motivating and the single most powerful way to improve our life and well-being! Yes, it‘s’ quite possible to lose weight without participating in regular exercise. However, diet and exercise combined will help us burn fat faster than we thought possible! Weight loss achieved by regular exercise and diet will be healthy weight loss because of all the benefits we obtain from regular exercise:
Strengthens muscles Strengthens bone Strengthens ligaments Strengthens tendons Strengthens immune system Improves muscle tone Improves endurance Improves strength Improves self esteem Improves confidence Improves balance Improves physical appearance Improves physical performance Improves glucose tolerance Improves circulation Improves memory Lower risk of heart disease Lower risk of diabetes Lower risk of cancer Lower blood pressure Lower cholesterol Lower risk of stroke Lower risk of osteoporosis Lower risk of osteoarthritis Lower requirements for medication Lower risk of injury Lower body fat Helps with sleep disorders Reduces post-operative complications Reduces frequency of illness Prevent Alzheimer‘s’ disease Prevents muscle loss Increases metabolism Eases symptoms of menopause Healthier pregnancy Fewer problems with childbirth Reduces ovulation problems Prevents heartburn
Reaching your ideal weight via a healthy and active lifestyle has been found to lower health risks and medical problems in 90 percent of overweight patients. In addition to the exercise benefits listed above, fit people are eight times less likely to die from cancer than the unfit, and 53 percent less likely to die from other diseases.
Fit people are also eight times less likely to die from heart disease. Without a doubt, regular exercise is the most important piece of the puzzle and the best way to achieve rapid weight loss. Exercise is the safest way to achieve permanent fat loss, and when combined with a sound diet and nutrition program the body is turned into a virtual fat-burning furnace!
-> Conclusion
Fast weight loss is possible if we, under the supervision and approval of our doctor, combine a sensible diet with a diet pill or weight loss pill that is safe and effective. When we combine these three fat-burning strategies it is almost guaranteed that we will experience quick weight loss results.
Of course, there is a staggering amount of information about health, exercise and fitness that still needs to be understood before this topic of rapid weight loss are complete. Several excellent e-books on this subject can be found by going to www.letspickupthepace.com and clicking on the Pick Up The Pace Store? and then fitness Education? links.

The Value of Your Own Wellness Staff
In this particular post, DOCTOR Jason Deitch allotments on the problems pestering our medical device and also why our experts require to make our very own wellness groups. PHYSICIAN Deitch is the co-author of the chart-topping manual "Discover Wellness: Exactly How Remaining Healthy And Balanced Can Easily Create You Rich." DOCTOR Reich is likewise the creator of Discover Wellness Center and also the Principal Wellness Policeman of the Owner's Cycle and also WellCall, Inc
. Kevin: Therefore allow's provide a quick overview concerning what you carry out, and after that, I wish to speak about several of the problems that are annoying our health care given that I presume that is genuinely essential to get involved in. To know more visit Fredericksburg VA chiropractor.
PHYSICIAN Deitch: OK. You understand Kevin, and I was engaging in physician, my instruction resides in chiropractic, for about ten years in the Oakland, The golden state location, East Gulf, San Francisco region. It was a remarkable adventure, and I have to inform you. I point out that because if you get on the cutting edge as well as you are collaborating with individuals as a doctor, specifically in the arena of all-natural wellness as well as recuperation and also wellness, you come to view wonders occur every time. It is a real blessing. It is an excellent point. Our team possessed a household wellness strategy. Our experts dealt with whatever coming from newborns to elders as well as everyone in between. It was splendid expertise.
Yet I carried out regularly invite the rear of my thoughts, I do not recognize if you would certainly call it a downhearted or even positive or even whatever sort of mindset you wish to take a look at it as however, I regularly referred to as high as I had the capacity to move folks indeed as well as help them and also boost their lifestyle. I maintained finding and also dealing with concentrating on the number of countless individuals worldwide at this moment, particularly in The United States, that are actually without insurance, that are actually over-dependent on points like harmful medicines as well as the real issues that appeared for me, and also indeed the ideas for composing my manual; which was actually genuinely taking a look at the business economics of individuals getting ill today. I possibly do not need to devote a lot opportunity persuading individuals that the United States is actually gravely endangered, financially and also on a great deal of various other various degrees, entirely just due to the reality that our country invests a bulk of its sources, research studies point out in between 70 and also often 90 per-cent, of our information spending for lifestyle-related, avoidable problems. Treatment that permanently is being invested in disorders there is generally preventable. That is excellent updates as well as the problem. The bright side is as well as our company can do one thing regarding it.
So my co-author, DOCTOR Bob Hoffman, as well as on my met. Our experts discovered this was actually a higher purpose and also objective than residing in daily strategy as well as our team made a decision to indeed make an effort to develop an action around assisting folks to come to be encouraged to positively carry out the many things that they most likely understand they must be actually carrying out anyhow and also may not be. It is indeed not a cutting edge scientific research. It is indeed not some all-new final approach. It is, with any luck, encouraging individuals to act on the sound judgment factors they recognize they must be performing. The truth is you may declare bankruptcy through refraining these points, in every feeling of words, as well as you can, in reality, prosper through carrying out these traits. It is definitely around you to perform, therefore.
Kevin: What is several of the sound judgment points that lots of people that perform a healthy and balanced pathway appear to become missing out on.
PHYSICIAN Deitch: Among all of them is actually to produce your very own wellness staff. What I imply through that is that as a doctor, as well as if that is the majority of individuals that are paying attention today, I am most likely to advise that our team are all relatively bad of determining wellness or even health care through what our experts carry out. Our group usually tend to detail it with our eyes, predominantly via things that our team carry out as well as possibly monetize. The truth is actually that individuals many times require an entire entourage in a manner of speaking, or even a staff of wellness specialists. What our experts discuss in the guide is the form of a transformative version. It is a version reflective of health care design that many people understand. Our team produces the example that many people do not get up eventually and also go, "You understand, I do not experience properly, I reside in some discomfort. Should I visit my specialist, my orthopedist, my psychotherapist, my fitness instructor? Let me assume momentarily. Perhaps I'll inquire my next-door neighbor what they carried out." They truly have actually been actually trained as well as familiarized to claiming, "I am actually most likely to visit the physician," as well as they count on the physician's task to become to assess their ailment, evaluate their targets and also to create suggestions for the items they need to be actually taking, in the health care globe that is actually usually medicines or even some type of surgical treatment, and also what, if any sort of, suggestions might be actually relevant, what professionals might be indeed essential to assist that individual achieve their targets.

The secret ingredient in Harlequins' title-winning transformation
4:33am, 11 July 2021 It sounds like something madcap from a science fiction movie, gum shields with state-of-the-art microchips in them relaying a whole heap of real-time data measurements about head and body collisions in matches and training, but it isn’t. Instead, Harlequins’ use of the groundbreaking PROTECHTPro system was seen as crucial in their incredible transformation from January doldrums to stunning June Gallagher Premiership champions.ADVERTISEMENTHarlequins aren’t the sole rugby users of this potentially game-changing gum shield designed by Swansea-based Sports & Wellbeing Analytics. Premiership rivals Gloucester and Leicester are also Protecht advocates as are Ospreys, the professional club that sits right on the doorstep of this sports industry disruptor. They are mid to lower table clubs where the creation of databases that can be used to decide when players should rest are yet to have the same title-winning crescendo gloriously celebrated at Twickenham a fortnight.Mike Lancaster, the head of medical services at Harlequins, and veteran scrum-half Danny Care have each spoken enthusiastically to their club’s in-house media about the invaluable data mined from the smart gum shield, but what have the champions of England done to make them so successful compared to other pioneers of this microchipped technology?
RugbyPass Fanzone on whether the Lions tour will be cancelledRichard Lancaster, who was once viewed as one of the sharpest upcoming coaches in the Welsh system when Scott Johnson was Ospreys boss, is these days head of business development and marketing at SWA and he knows well from his days in a tracksuit how tough it can be to radically change things in teams that are losing more than they are winning. That was the situation at Harlequins over the winter before the sudden exit of Paul Gustard created the perfect storm, encouraging the backroom staff to change tack and see where it might take them. “When you are losing it takes a very brave person to say well actually we are not going to do that today, we are going to do something different, we are going to give you the day off or whatever that may be,” said SWA’s Lancaster to RugbyPass. So much going on in Rugby at the moment in regard to head knocks and concussions. Fascinating to learn more about this and how this can be monitored and training adapted to help with player welfare. Have a look below @PROTECHTPro @Harlequins @mikephys https://t.co/z7QfRkOuuP— Danny Care (@dannycare) April 2, 2021With Paul leaving when he did – and he is a fantastic coach – but when he left what it did was create a platform for the management at Harlequins, so Mike Lancaster had more of an opportunity to suggest this change and drive it. They were genuinely collaborative leaders there whereas Paul Gustard was the man. Take him away and everyone has got as much of a say in this as anyone else. That handed Mike the conditions, I suppose, to really drive this, to give it a go and be brave. There were other factors as well. There was no relegation, they were on a shot to nothing really because Paul was the accountable person and he was the one who was moved on.ADVERTISEMENT“The other guys there now at Harlequins had the opportunity to have a shot to nothing, so Mike believed in what we were doing (with the collected data), he drove it and took it probably a bit further than he probably would have been allowed to under a head of rugby.”What resulted at Harlequins due to data gleaned from the smart gum shield was that more and more players were wearing white bibs at training, the indicator for their teammates that they were not to take any contact in that session. The monitoring ultimately led to overall contacts dropping 90 per cent and coincided with a day less being spent a week on the training pitch which helped to ensure an attention-grabbing drop in the injury rate.“What we have done with Harlequins, Mike Lancaster said they had reduced contact in training by around 90 per cent but they managed to maintain match intensity. If you watched the semi-final, as it progressed Bristol fell further and further away and it was the fitness and freshness of Harlequins that carried them through. Same story against Exeter.“Quins understood where redundant contacts might happen. It could be in a game of touch, the players are travelling high velocity and if they brush against each other that is a contact. Is that the objective of what they are trying to achieve? No. Is it required? No. So they just moved stuff like that out of their training programme and in their training contact. They train at match intensity but it’s for a purpose.ADVERTISEMENT“Off the back of that at the time of the season where you historically have players out longest with season-ending injuries, they saw their injury rates being the lowest they have been for a number of years, so player availability was higher. As you know if player availability is high then you are more likely to be successful.“Rugby is a brutal sport because you are just on the treadmill. There is no breaks in it…. but Protecht allows you to find that sweet spot between making sure that they are prepared enough and proficient in technique and they can be effective in what they need to be effective in but not loading them up so much that they are likely to breakdown.”Sports & Wellbeing Analytics was founded by a small group of investors in 2016, not to make a quick buck to come up with an innovation that could genuinely aid rugby’s long-term safety. It’s taken a while to get to here from there but having now had their methods tried and tested successfully at professional level, the hope is to eventually make this product available to the grassroots at a price equivalent to the cost of a good pair of boots.
“Why the company was set up is we want the sport to be around in 20 or 30 or 50 years. Our original investors are rugby people,” continued Lancaster, who retired from playing in his early 20s with a knee injury and has since coached at Mumbles, Swansea Uni, Ospreys age-grade and Swansea.“What they wanted to do was take cutting edge science and technology and apply it to problems, and the biggest problem at the time in rugby was player welfare and concussion. They hoped to collect data around head impacts and understand the cause of concussion and that is where the journey started.“They found very quickly there was nothing on the market that was accurate and reliable. There were neck patches that the Saracens guys had worn, headbands and a few other things out there. GPS can understand what happens in contact as well but the biggest challenge of that is reliability.“There is so much independent movement that you are not actually measuring what is happening to the head and the skull and so we found the only way to do that was couple something to the skull. The next-best thing was to couple a mouthguard to the individual and from there we have seen what is happening to the head.“We went through a huge validation process, firstly at Swansea University and latterly with Stanford University that have confirmed what we say is happening in contact is actually happening. This genuinely is something that helps make the game safer and we’re hoping these mouth guards can provide reassurance to parents, to players that just isn’t there at the moment.Really pleased to be working with @Harlequins and supporting their safe return to play following the COVID lockdown #playerwelfare https://t.co/81fqCE9kz5— PROTECHT (@PROTECHTPro) June 25, 2020“We suspect a lot of the issues lower down the grassroots, because you haven’t got 120kgs professional athletes running into each other and creating a big collision, the more dangerous ones are poor technique and timing, things like that. When you understand where the biggest risk of head injury and suggest different ways of training or different techniques, it can generally be safer at that level.“It is such an ambiguous concept. The way elite professional clubs would have reported contact would be they might say a player hit 20 rucks in a game, but no two rucks are the same. You might be flying in from ten metres to one ruck and be just running up and touching another ruck but they would be put in the same bucket and that doesn’t tell the story of what is happening.“So that is the journey we took. We started to quantify the contact demands, the number of contacts they were making and the intensity of those contacts with Ospreys and then very quickly we shifted into Harlequins, Gloucester, Leicester. We have done some work with Bristol Bears ladies, more recently Harlequins ladies, some work with Salford and Toronto rugby league and are about to kick off with St Helens.“We are also looking at some boxing stuff, have done Premiership League football pilots and where we are able to provide real value is by not only showing what is happening to a player but also giving coaches and athletes a way to better manage that in training.“We know 95 per cent of what happens in a match are your typical things you train for and it’s the five per cent incidents which are the accidents, a knee to a head, someone gets their tackle technique incorrect. Those are things you don’t train for and what we want to make sure is this other five per cent of incidents are seen.”How are we ensuring the safety of our players? We have teamed up with @PROTECHTPro and @OPROMouthguards to monitor player collisions in real time. #COYQ @MJHudsonCorp pic.twitter.com/Ndxtlaks9D— Harlequins Women ? (@HarlequinsWomen) May 26, 2021Has Lancaster a telling example? “One of the worst we have seen is a player carried into contact, it was really innocuous. A No8 carrying into a tackle and went down quite easily and the ball was played away. Nothing happened but we saw a huge impact in that data so we looked at it frame by frame and what actually happened is one of his own teammates arrived and kneed him square in the head when he was in that ruck.“Nobody saw it whereas our technology will pick that up and rely it to the medics to ensure things don’t go unseen because in incidents like that you do want to help, to take the decision away from the player. It has got to be the experts because the player will always want to play on.”The smart mouthguard idea isn’t only confined to the UK. World Rugby are currently involved in a University of Otago study regarding head impacts, but the governing body knows what SWA are up in connection with OPRO, the mouth guard manufacturers they partnered with in 2019.“We have talked to World Rugby on the journey. First of all we have to seek their approval for this to be used in competition. They said this is an area where they can shed light and they are very supportive. All the conversations we have are hugely positive. I haven’t had a conversation where someone where someone said, ‘Look, this isn’t of interest to us’.“It is our ambition that this should be rolled right across the English Premiership and into other leagues as well internationally but it is also on our roadmap that this will eventually get into the grassroots in sport as well, providing that reassurance for parents, teachers and coaches about what is happening.”ICYMI @PROTECHTPro featured on last nights @BBCTheOneShow with @Phil_Vickery talking to players from @gloucesterrugby and @BristolBearsW about how the technology is helping to make the game saferYou can watch the segment here ?? https://t.co/o8BRpWTl8z— PROTECHT (@PROTECHTPro) March 26, 2021For Lancaster, who left a head of sport and corporate engagement role at Swansea University for SWA, that would be a development to savour. “I’m incredibly lucky. I didn’t play at the very highest level, had to retire at a very early age, but I owe my livelihood to rugby. I was very lucky because I coached with the likes of Steve Tandy at Bridgend, the likes of Mike Ruddock and guys at the Ospreys.“I don’t think I was ever going to be good enough to go to the very highest level. It’s such a thankless job, coaching, so I just felt that joining SWA, I feel like I can make far more impact for the sport. I feel like we genuinely can make the game safer, we genuinely can transform rugby and take it to the next level.“I genuinely believe this is something that is going to help change the game in a good way and hopefully helps secure the future of the game at well. It’s sad that we see numbers declining in rugby at the moment. A lot of that would be down to safety concerns from parents and this is something that can definitely help secure the future.“I played in the same generation as Alix Popham. His story is tragic. I’m still in contact with Alix. He says he wishes this technology had been around in his day as it might have helped in some way. Danny Care said a similar thing, he wants this to be around for his kids. That is the big difference that this can make.”We are delighted to be teaming up with the @premierleague to support their efforts to better understand, monitor and manage head impacts within football https://t.co/SUYA3mPdCn— PROTECHT (@PROTECHTPro) March 26, 2021

Nova Scotia reports 1 new COVID-19 case; 973 people recovered
Nova Scotia announced one new case of COVID-19 on Sunday.
The QEII Health Sciences Centre's microbiology lab completed 494 tests on Saturday.
To date, Nova Scotia has 38,055 negative test results.
19 active cases in the province
A total of 1,050 positive cases have been confirmed in Nova Scotia. Of those cases, 973 people have recovered, and 58 people have died – this leaves 19 active cases in the province.
Of the 19 active cases, 16 are at the Northwood long-term care facility in Halifax, which currently has 12 residents and four staff members with active cases of COVID-19. One other facility has one resident with an active case.
As of Thursday, 52 of the 58 COVID-19-related deaths in Nova Scotia have been at Northwood.
The province did not report any additional deaths on Sunday.
Slow and safe reopening
As the province begins to reopen some facilities, businesses, and activities, Premier Stephen McNeil thanked Nova Scotians, asking that they remain focused on the goal of a safe provincial reopening.
"I hope Nova Scotians are enjoying some time outdoors this weekend, and I want to thank everyone again for their efforts and patience," said Premier Stephen McNeil. "I know this has been tough, but together we are slowing this virus and making progress toward reopening our province safely."
Chief medical officer Dr. Robert Strang said the province will continue to see lower COVID-19 case numbers by continuing to follow health and safety guidelines.
"It is still important to follow public health advice, practise good hygiene and limit large gatherings," said Strang. "Doing all of these things will help ensure our case numbers continue to stay low."
What we know about the confirmed cases
Six people are currently in hospital; three of those patients are in intensive care units.
The confirmed cases of COVID-19 range in age from under 10 to over 90.
Sixty-two per cent of cases are female and 38 per cent are male.
The new case announced on Sunday is located in the central zone, which contains the Halifax Regional Municipality.
The western, northern and eastern zones are reporting no additional cases at this time.
Western zone: 54 cases
Central zone: 901 cases
Northern zone: 44 cases
Eastern zone: 51 cases
Public health is working to identify and test people who may have come in close contact with the confirmed cases.
Second wave expected
On Friday, Strang reiterated that, while the first wave is coming to an end, Nova Scotians will need to adjust to a "new normal" while living with the reality of COVID-19.
"As we come out of the first wave of COVID-19, it's not about going back to where we were in 2019," said Strang. "Some things need to be maintained that allow us to live with COVID in a reasonable way."
Strang said Nova Scotia will likely see a second wave of the virus in the fall or winter.
Symptoms and self-isolation
Anyone who tests positive for COVID-19 is required to self-isolate at home, away from the public, for 14 days.
As Nova Scotia moves forward with its COVID-19 situation, it is also expanding the list of symptoms for which it is testing.
Nova Scotians who experience any of the following symptoms should take an online questionnaire to determine if they should call 811 for further assessment:
fever, chills, sweats
cough or worsening of a previous cough
sore throat
headache
shortness of breath
muscle aches
sneezing
nasal congestion/runny nose
hoarse voice
diarrhea
unusual fatigue
loss of sense of smell or taste
red, purple or blueish lesions on the feet, toes or fingers without clear cause
On Friday, Strang said the expansion is based on growing knowledge of the virus, and all provinces and territories are adopting the expanded list of symptoms.
"We've learned over the last few months that COVID-19 actually can present in a more diverse way – a greater number of symptoms than we originally understood at the beginning of the first wave," said Strang.

New Post has been published on https://freenews.today/2020/11/28/what-happens-if-someone-refuses-vaccination-ethicists-urge-clarity-on-covid-19-rollout/
What happens if someone refuses vaccination? Ethicists urge clarity on COVID-19 rollout
TORONTO — When the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines finally arrive in Canada, the country will need to grapple with a series of difficult questions that ethicists fear we haven’t spent enough time answering.
For example, which groups should get vaccinated after those most vulnerable? How long will it take for everyone to get their shot? And what happens if a person refuses to get vaccinated?
The clock is ticking to address those questions. Pfizer’s vaccine candidate, which is more than 90-per-cent effective according to the company’s preliminary results, could be approved for use in Canada before Christmas, according to Health Canada’s chief medical adviser.
Kerry Bowman, a bioethicist and assistant professor at the University of Toronto’s faculty of medicine, said the lack of clarity on a number of key issues involving Canada’s rollout is “beginning to make people very anxious.”
“Because we don’t really have a clear plan yet. Or if we do, it’s not available and transparent to the majority of Canadians,” Bowman told CTV News.
WHO GETS VACCINATED FIRST?
Federal health authorities have not released a comprehensive list of what order the vaccine will be delivered. For now, four key groups have been given priority to receive the vaccine, according to recommendations from the National Advisory Committee on Immunization.
Those groups include those at risk of severe illness and death (such as the elderly or those with pre-existing conditions), essential workers most likely to transmit the disease (such as health-care workers), those at risk who live in communities that could suffer disproportionate consequences (such as isolated Indigenous communities), and other workers providing services that contribute to “the functioning of society.”
The committee purposefully left those definitions broad so that policy-makers tasked with plotting provincial roll-outs could define them as they see fit.
But after those groups, who comes next?
Research suggests racialized Canadians are at higher risk than white Canadians of having pre-existing conditions that could put them at risk of severe outcomes from COVID-19.
Employers whose businesses have been sidelined due to COVID-19 will also be among those most keen to get vaccinated. A recent Statistics Canada survey suggested that five per cent of businesses were actively considering bankruptcy or closure this fall. Anxieties are running highest among the arts, entertainment and hospitality industries, with nearly 30 per cent worried they’ll need to resort to layoffs, bankruptcy or closure within six months.
Whatever happens, there will inevitably be a period of time in 2021 when the limited supply of vaccines will create a society of haves and have-nots. Those months will be challenging, says Alison Thompson, an ethicist with the University of Toronto.
“This is very concerning because then we have a society that is really a two-tiered society that is based on some kind of biological grounds,” she said.
CAN YOU REFUSE THE VACCINE?
It’s impossible for anyone to be forced to take the COVID-19 vaccine once it’s available. But there could be real-life consequences to refusal.
“People that don’t want the vaccine, we all know, have an absolute right not to have it. I mean, it is their bodies without question,” Bowman said. “But that is an ethical concern because what will likely happen to people within that group is more and more opportunities may slowly be shut off to them.”
For instance, individuals who aren’t vaccinated may miss out on returning to the workplace or could face other restrictions involving group gatherings.
To make matters trickier, the vaccine will not be immediately available for certain groups. Pregnant women and children, who are not involved in clinical trials of the experimental vaccines, will be excluded from vaccination until more clinical trial data is available.
This exemption may be inconvenient, but it’s standard in these sorts of trials for safety reasons, Thompson said.
“Pregnant women are often excluded from clinical trials on many pharmaceutical products, including vaccines, because of the risk to the fetus that she carries and her own health,” she said.
IMMUNITY PASSPORTS?
The idea of “immunity passports” was floated early on in the pandemic as some governments expressed optimism that individuals who’d recovered from COVID-19 and tested positive for virus-fighting antibodies could be given greater freedoms to travel or return to work.
However, the World Health Organization dismissed the idea, saying there wasn’t enough evidence yet on the effectiveness or longevity of immunity through antibodies.
Vaccines may give new attention to the notion of “immunity passports” — a possibility that Thompson said needs to be handled thoughtfully.
“I think we need to think very carefully about how we use people’s immune status to grant them access to employment and travel and things like that,” she said.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SOMEONE SUFFERS SIDE EFFECTS?
All vaccines currently being study are tested for both their effectiveness and safety. Before reaching the general public, Health Canada needs to approve that the vaccine is safe enough for public use.
Even so, there’s a chance that some individuals could suffer long-term side effects from a COVID-19 vaccine, Bowman said. It’s simply too early to know for certain.
“I have never heard of a vaccine that is 100-per-cent bulletproof safe, and I have no belief that this will be any different.”
However, he added: “It all sounds very good so far.”
In the event that someone suffers negative side effects of the vaccine, some advocates believe they should be financially compensated. At least 19 countries already have programs in place that compensate individuals injured by vaccines, but Canada does not, except for Quebec.
Thompson said it’s time for Canada to consider its own national compensation program.
“There are things we can be doing from the government side, to really help people view (vaccines) as more trustworthy,” she said, pointing to such a program.
CAN YOU CHOOSE WHICH VACCINE YOU WANT?
With several vaccine candidates in the race to be approved first, with Pfizer and Moderna leading the pack, it’s possible that Canada could have several different vaccines on the market in 2021. However, experts told CTVNews.ca last week that there is no health benefit to receiving more than one type of vaccine.
As for personal choice, it’s unlikely that Canadians will have the option to choose which vaccine they want.
“I suspect that choice will not be an issue as the vaccines arrive in Canada. There will be a strategy to roll out vaccination, prioritizing the most vulnerable and front-line workers,” said Dr. Eleanor Fish, an immunology professor at the University of Toronto.
In the face of so many looming questions, Bowman said it’s important to “get this right.”
“So much of vaccine distribution is tied to ethics now,” he said. “It’s going to be a challenge.”

For example, Animalarium, a small zoo in Wales was put up for sale in 2016 for £650,000, which included over 12 acres of land and 300 animal species. Utilities and feed costs can differ depending on the size of the zoo and the types of animals you host. It costs £8,500 per day to run Paradise Wildlife Park, for example, which adds up to roughly £3.1 million per year.
A licence
You will need to apply for a licence to operate a zoo to start, and make sure the premises are compliant to any and all laws. Zoos are subject to regular inspections by the local authority, which has the power to issue hefty fines or even close you down if standards aren’t maintained. South Lakes Zoo in Cumbria, for example, was fined a total of £255,000 for breaking health and safety laws when a Sumatran tiger mauled a zookeeper to death.
Insurance
To prepare for any unexpected accidents and for the safety and care of the animals in the zoo, insurance will be vital. Specialist zoo insurance can help when starting out, covering anything from product and public liability insurance, to specialist cover for loss of attractions, loss of licence, worldwide transit of animals, worldwide cover for employees, full theft, foot and mouth disease and bird flu, et cetera.
Trained staff
Zookeepers are essential for any zoo. Salaries for trained staff ranges from £13,000 to £29,000, which can add up depending on the size and number of experts you need. You’ll also need caretakers, ticket sellers, cleaning and catering staff, and administrative office workers to operate a zoo that can cater to visitors. On the plus side, on-site cafes, restaurants and gift shops can also be an added source of income.
Animals
Owning animals can be tricky business, especially if you’re looking to house exotic wildlife. Zoos have not brought or bought animals directly from the wild since the 1970s, unless they are rescued. Animals are either bred in captivity or traded between zoos, so getting animals into your zoo won’t cost you anything. However, caring for them in the form of providing food, shelter and medical care are all expensive. You may need to have veterinary staff on-site around the clock.
Basic rules for running a zoo
As a basic requirement, zoo owners should protect their animals, feed them and design suitable enclosures as per the Zoo Licensing Act of 1981.
Know your ROI
Buying and running a zoo is more a passion project than a get-rich-quick venture for most. Ultimately, zoos are more focused on wildlife conservation than on profit, so keep that in mind from the outset. Around 90 per cent of the total revenue for zoos comes from gate fees, so footfall is everything in the business.
Chester Zoo is the UK’s most popular, managing 1,694,115 visits in 2015. Ticket prices vary depending on dates and age, but an average figure of £16.50 a ticket means the Zoo earned an approximate £27.95 million in gate fees alone.
Zoos aren’t necessarily a money pit, however. The Paradise Wildlife Park, for example, was bought for £100,000 in 1984, but is now valued at £5 million, welcoming 200,000 visitors a year. If managed and marketed aggressively, a zoo could be a profitable venture.’
Looking at this list to me seems as if it isn't EVERYONE who can set up there own zoo. This is clear from the first paragraph since money is a huge factor, and this isn't someone that a majority of people have. anyone who had the funds and resources to open a zoo can, a average person who like the idea of running there own zoo could not.

'We can do this': Dr. Lisa Barrett says masks, testing, limiting contacts key to gathering safely
With the Easter long weekend just around the corner, many families and friends in the Maritimes are looking forward to getting together after two years of living under COVID-19-related guidelines and restrictions.
Although Maritimers have more tools and knowledge on how to get together safely during the pandemic, Dr. Lisa Barrett, an infectious disease specialist in Nova Scotia, says it's still important for people to follow the basic rules when it comes to COVID-19.
"Please make sure that you stay home if you're sick, if you have vulnerable people around, make sure you're testing right before you go to see those folks if you have access to tests, and of course, wearing masks in the number of days before getting together is super important," said Barrett during an interview with CTV News on Tuesday.
Barrett says people should also keep their close contacts at a "moderate" level in the days prior to a gathering, as a way to reduce the risk of spread.
Positive COVID-19 cases continue to rise in all three Maritime provinces, however, the number of deaths has stayed relatively the same.
Barrett says this is likely due to people getting vaccinated against the virus.
"Vaccines do work. We've always said that they don't protect perfectly against infection, but they are very good, Omicron included, if you have all of your doses against deaths and hospitalizations," she said.
"So, what you're seeing is a big congratulations to people in Atlantic Canada who have gotten vaccinated, but there's more. Also, deaths are always delayed as cases go up and that's going to take a couple of weeks to see that impact, same with hospitalizations."
On Tuesday, Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam urged Canadians to keep wearing masks, regardless of varying jurisdictional guidelines, as the country sees a resurgence of COVID-19 cases.
Tam also underlined the need to get boosted with a third COVID-19 vaccine dose to prevent against severe outcomes from the illness -- two points with which Barrett agrees.
"Definitely boosters. If you're eligible, either for your third one... please consider going out to do that, the sooner the better. And if you're eligible coming up for the fourth dose, do that as well. It does help," she said.
Barrett says masking and limiting contacts to moderate levels are also two important factors in slowing the spread of COVID-19.
"That doesn't mean not getting together, but people should have the option to be able to use public essential services and expect to see masks, which federal and provincial professionals in this field are recommending are needed," she said.
"So, inside, indoors, please... if you're in a public space like public transit or grocery stores, there are lots of people out there who need to wear a mask. Not just this weekend, but until we're done with this."
As of April 7, Nova Scotia reported 63.9 per cent of its eligible residents were vaccinated with a third dose of COVID-19 vaccine – a number that Barrett says she wishes was higher.
"The dose of vaccine we have right now are really helpful, but we do need for you to have the third one to be very effective, and that's especially true if you're medically vulnerable," she said.
"Therefore, I would say let's aim for the same number we went for, for doses one and two. To get the most benefit, particularly at times of surge like this, you need to get up into the 80s and 90s (per cent) for this to be mostly impactful."
Barrett says her best medical advice for everyone is to maintain moderate contacts, continue to mask, get COVID-19 vaccines when eligible, and test and isolate when needed.
"Use every tool that makes our vaccine-plus plan work, and that's a medical expert opinion that's not in a minority,” she said.
"And we can do this. No one is so tired that they can't do these simple things. These aren't restrictions, these are ways of keeping us out and about, and being able to do the things we want."
Although it is too early to tell, Barrett says she is hopeful for a better summer when it comes to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Canada’s ‘me first’ COVID-19 vaccine strategy may come at the cost of global health

When the throne speech was delivered on Sept. 23, Canada had already dedicated over $1 billion upfront buy agreements with 5 drug corporations for at least 154 million vaccine doses, if and when these candidate vaccines are confirmed efficient and protected. Two days later, Canada inked one other settlement with one other firm for 20 million extra doses, hedging its bets on which of the vaccine contenders would be the first to reach.
In doing so, Canada joins the premier league of the vaccine nationalists, a handful of wealthy international locations that has pre-purchased (to this point) greater than half the world’s anticipated short-term provide of vaccines.
It’s comprehensible that international locations need to guarantee their skill to guard their residents’ well being. However many of the world’s inhabitants lives in international locations with out the identical monetary sources to play the worldwide “me first” vaccine contest. Efforts to raise nationwide pursuits over collective international well being lead to slower progress and restricted international capability to pool sources, whereas putting the pursuits of rich international locations over others, with devastating results.
Latest modelling in contrast two situations for allocating the primary three billion doses of a vaccine that’s 80 per cent efficient. The “unco-operative” state of affairs — during which two billion doses went straight to high-income international locations, and the remainder to everyone else — would result in 28 per cent extra deaths than a “co-operative” state of affairs, during which the three billion doses are distributed globally, proportional to inhabitants measurement.
What can Canada do?
To start, our pledge to the World Well being Group’s COVAX Facility’s Superior Market Dedication (AMC). ought to, at a minimal, match what we spend money on procuring vaccine to be used inside Canada. The power manages the world’s largest and most numerous portfolio of vaccine candidates. Excessive-income international locations like Canada that be a part of COVAX have the choice to buy accredited vaccines via the power, even when they’ve already entered into bilateral buy agreements with vaccine corporations. On Sept. 25, Canada introduced that it might accomplish that, committing $220 million to buy 15 million extra vaccine doses from the power if and as they’re accredited.
Arguably of extra significance, the power’s AMC will present vaccines to greater than 90 eligible poorer international locations unable to afford them on their very own. The AMC wants to boost $2 billion by December to take action, with the short-term purpose of immunizing three per cent of all COVAX international locations’ populations. As of Sept. 21, solely $700 million had been promised. On Sept. 25, Canada dedicated $220 million to the AMC, on prime of $25 million it had already given. That is welcome and commendable, however it’s also insufficient.
The AMC’s longer-term purpose is to achieve 20 per cent — a purpose that can enable health-care staff and susceptible populations in poor international locations to obtain vaccines — however this can rely solely on how generously high-income international locations, philanthropists and drug corporations donate to the AMC.
COVAX goals to make sure international equitable entry to COVID-19 vaccines.
Rather more AMC funding is required now, and going ahead. We argue that Canada ought to commit a dollar-per-dollar quantity to the AMC based mostly on what it spends by itself vaccine purchases. This could imply offering as much as $1 billion greater than its present AMC pledge, with funds flowing via our nation’s official improvement help (ODA) envelope. Canada has international obligations beneath worldwide declarations to take action.
Canada says it’s a voice for fairness and human rights, at dwelling and on the worldwide stage. Actions communicate louder than phrases. Canada lately has not been notably beneficiant in its abroad help. We ranked 17th out of 30 of the OECD membership of donor nations in 2019, contributing simply 0.27 per cent of our gross nationwide earnings, with no forseeable enhance. A $1 billion rapid AMC top-up would nonetheless not raise us to our long-pledged 0.7 per cent ODA goal.
One billion {dollars} appears like some huge cash. However it is just one-fifth the quantity the federal authorities has borrowed weekly since March from the Financial institution of Canada (which it owns) to finance its pandemic help packages. Most less-endowed international locations lack the identical skill to borrow indefinitely from their very own central banks and as a substitute should flip to international collectors, with the debt-burden dangers that entails. Or do with out.
Vaccine manufacturing
Based on the CEO of the world’s largest vaccine maker, the Serum Institute of India, even with expanded international capability, it could take till 2024 earlier than there are sufficient doses for the world’s inhabitants. Along with making certain extra beneficiant assist for the COVAX Facility, Canada also can ramp up its personal vaccine manufacturing capability. It’s already on a pathway to take action, with the federal government’s $126-million funding for a brand new facility in Montréal. The power’s purpose is to provide two million vaccine doses monthly for home use by summer time 2021.
Why not double-down on this funding, and reserving half the output for AMC use to fulfill pressing international wants? This could signify to all Canadians the significance of a collective response to this pandemic.
Public well being is international
Because the world eagerly awaits arrival of an efficient vaccine, it’s essential to recollect three issues. First, the longer-term effectiveness of any vaccine will stay unsure for a while. Second, even when herd immunity to COVID-19 finally develops, there’ll nearly actually be one other novel an infection within the not-so-distant future. Third, one solution to cope with each future pandemic dangers and the current quick provide of COVID-19 vaccine is to embrace the vary of non-pharmaceutical interventions that may flatten and even include infectious curves. That is particularly so in these international locations which might be dwelling to the half of humanity who nonetheless lack entry to important well being care.
Gov. Gen. Julie Payette and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau wait through the throne speech within the Senate chamber in Ottawa on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020. The speech famous Canada’s dedication to making sure international entry to a COVID-19 vaccine THE CANADIAN PRESS/Adrian Wyld
All international locations want stronger public well being workforces: extra nurses, testers, contact tracers and group well being staff. All international locations want common well being protection, one of many Sustainable Improvement Objective targets to which the world (Canada included) dedicated to realize by 2030. However it’s the poorer half of humanity who wants this extra urgently.
So, if Canada and different wealthy international locations of their vaccine nationalism proceed inadvertently to crowd out entry for poor international locations, they need to compensate by massively underwriting the investments such international locations want to supply the social safety, earnings assist and meals safety primary to their residents’ well being, and to strengthen their well being programs with the general public well being capability to suppress outbreaks as they come up.
It’s in our personal nationwide curiosity to take action. Because the Sept. 23 throne speech concluded:
“We can not remove this pandemic in Canada except we finish it all over the place.”
