Every time I find a scholarship that applies to the degree I’m doing it’s always only for students who live in like Ontario or BC. There are hundreds for people doing oil and gas related degrees tho 🙄.

Setting people on fire in D&D
DISCLAIMER: DO NOT SET SOMEONE ON FIRE IRL WITH THIS ADVICE; IF YOU'RE GOING TO DO IT, I DO NOT WANT TO BE LEGALLY ASSOCIATED WITH YOU. Also, I don't have much of a background in chemistry; if I've gotten something wrong, forgive me and point it out so I can correct it.
This post is brought to you by @fuck-the-fairies, who asked for rules about being on fire; my ignorance on that subject and the possibly-tangent my mind leapt to; and @eyeloch, who is working on a chemistry degree (albeit not in the field of fire) and looked over some bits of this for me.
Now, despite what childhood edutainment implied, humans are not very flammable. Our bodies are mostly water, after all; and I'm going to be using that as a baseline for any other character race, because doing otherwise invites madness. Therefore, if you want to light someone on fire, you have to do something unusual.
People aren't very flammable, but sometimes they're covered in flammable things. Barring the presence of a massive fire source, I think that's the only likely way you're going to set someone on fire, without magic. The victim has to either be wearing ridiculously flammable clothing -- not even paper catches like that, I mean something on the level of guncotton -- or they've been doused in a flammable liquid.
The PHB (page 152) gives rules for splashing oil on someone, and says that if the target takes any fire damage before it dries, then it takes an extra 5 fire damage. That's okay, I guess, but it's boring.
First off, let's adjust the "takes any fire damage" so that it also allows for very small fires, that in themselves wouldn't deal any damage, to also trigger this. Like a lit match. Very minor change, but it plugs what I think is a loophole.
Second, would it ALWAYS require a ranged attack roll to pour oil on someone? In combat, probably. However, if the target is incapacitated or restrained or otherwise unable to dodge, I'd say you can just walk up and pour it on them. If you're upending a whole barrel of stuff onto a group of people from above, that's probably something that would require a Dexterity save on their part.
Now I'm not an arsonist, but I've read a lot of mystery novels. I know that accelerants are a thing that exist, and I also know that fire comes in different intensities. The stuff in the PHB, that's just standard lantern or cooking oil I assume. What if we used a different chemical compound to prepare the target? Same rules would apply for getting it on them, as with any liquid, but the effects are different.
Here's the variables we can change: how noticeable the liquid is, how long the liquid is flammable, what it takes to set a fire, how long a fire lasts, how much it takes to put the fire out, and what damage the fire does.
Let's start with the last one. There's how MUCH damage it does, obviously -- how hot the fire burns -- but you can also have stuff other than fire damage. Poison damage springs to mind, as a lot of substances emit toxic fumes when aflame. You could make a good case for radiant damage as well, although that'd likely be more mystical than physical. Psychic damage? Sure why not, if it's described as excruciatingly painful and attacking one's very sense of self. Extra damage types might or might not have an additional save associated with them.
Continuing with the reverse order, how much it takes to put the fire out. The standard rule, throughout effects which set someone on fire, is that it takes an action, by anyone who can reach the person on fire (including the person on fire). But what if it's sticky? Maybe it takes two actions. What if it can't be put out with an action by the person who's on fire, and it needs someone else? What if the helper takes fire damage from putting out the fire? Common sense would say that being submerged in water would put out the fire, but even without magic, common sense fails to take white phosphorus into account, which has its own oxygen supply and keeps burning underwater. You might need to remove anything that came into contact with the flammable liquid; let's hope the character was wearing a shirt.
I was talking with a friend who knows stuff about chemistry, and they mentioned the possibility of burning sulfur. Quote: "the combustion of the sulphur will form sulphur dioxide" and "this gas, upon dissolving in water, make sulphuric acid". I asked for clarification, and here's something REALLY nasty that's also backed up by science: if you use water to put out this fire, the person who was on fire is now NOT on fire, but they take acid damage. This is best paired with other things about putting out the fire, for maximum fun. (Also, apparently the flame would be bright blue so that's awesome.)
How long the fire lasts. As a general rule, intense fires tend to burn out more quickly, everything else being equal, I assume. If nobody does anything to put out the fire, and the character doesn't die, what happens? Unless you have some serious legendary magic with this, they shouldn't keep burning for eternity. Anything longer than a few minutes seems unlikely to my non-expert self. This is unlikely to be too much of a deal, but it's good to get down ahead of time because you never know.
What it takes to get the fire started. "Any fire damage" is a logical choice. But maybe something needs a lot of heat energy to ignite, and it only blazes up when the target takes a certain amount of fire damage from a single source. Maybe some things can or can't be ignited from just a match.
How long the liquid is flammable. In the PHB for oil, it says that it dries after a minute. Some liquids would evaporate quickly, which apparently is called high volatility in science-speak; if you don't apply flame within the next round, then it's wasted. Some could be there, and a potential danger, until the target has finished a short or long rest. Anything longer than that is probably unfair and/or broken.
There was a really great bit in that one Sherlock Holmes movie with Robert Downey Jr, where a guy was set on fire and he hadn't noticed that he was covered in flammable stuff, because it was raining while he was sprayed with it. That's relevant to how noticeable the liquid is, and I suppose also how distinct and recognizable. In most cases, the target would notice that someone put a liquid on them. However, what happens next? Is it something that the target can rationally assume happened to be harmless to them, or do they realize "I'm about to be set on fire"? Is there an obvious smell? What about how it feels, is it greasy or like water, does it soak in or stay on the surface? Is it easily visible? Basically, is this a viable choice for stealthily assassinating someone with, because that situation WILL come up.
...I just realized that I forgot to talk about actually lighting the fire. Well, anything that deals fire damage, that’s obvious. But for just touching a match to something that’ll ignite with it.... 5E doesn’t have touch attacks, which is overall a very good decision to simplify things, but unfortunately that’s exactly what this would be, so I have to describe it. The most accurate way to put it would be like, melee attack using Dexterity as the ability modifier, and the target doesn’t add an armour bonus to their AC (but shields still apply). This might be too complicated for actual play, but it gives a place to start. It’s definitely a melee action though.
Outside of a combat situation, if you succeed in a Stealth check opposed by the target’s Perception, you’re all good and don’t need to roll, they don’t see anything unusual and you can set them on fire without making an attack. If they do notice, make an attack roll, possibly with advantage depending on how unsuspecting the target is.
Unless your group is mostly composed of people with a background in chemistry or noxious substances, it'll be the characters who have to figure out how to make or acquire those "enhanced ignition" fluids. This is most likely the province of alchemy, being the closest analogue to IRL materials science, and also canonically working with unpleasant and dangerous chemicals. Thus, any character with proficiency in alchemist's kit. (Wizards also feel associated with this stuff, but the wizard can damn well learn alchemy if they want it.) It'd be safe to tell them that such things exist -- hell, "alchemist's fire" is an item in the PHB, you're not going to break the game by going "alchemists have fun and exciting ways to set things on fire" -- but acquiring substances, preparing them safely, and identifying the properties of an unknown flammable liquid, that all would require some checks.
To say nothing of the fact that those substances are probably expensive and/or legally restricted. Unless "assassination by induced quote-spontaneous-unquote combustion" is common in your setting, that could be fun too.

Let’s save the planet using stats!
I recently came across a blog post by The Pembina Institute entitled The most important climate numbers you need to know. The post uses data from the National Inventory Report (NIR), which is the account of all GHG emissions from Canada that we submit to the UN annually. Using this data, Pembina highlights two provinces and three sectors: Alberta and Ontario are responsible for 60% of the countries emissions, and Oil and Gas, Transport, and Buildings are responsible for 70% of our emissions. If we want to reduce our emissions, those are the places we need to focus.
So I thought k great start. Let’s revive my blog that’s been dead for 2 years and dig deeper into the numbers to see what we can learn!
BTW this post is v v long so there’s I made a bullet list TLDR at the end. K cool moving on.
1. I Wanna Talk About Transportation
Ok so I know Oil and Gas is the biggest emitter and super important for Canada’s climate strategy, but I want to take that sector out of the conversation for now, and here’s why. We already know the best way to dramatically reduce emissions from producing oil and gas: stop producing oil and gas. That just will not happen as long as it makes money to keep going. Since the industry and emissions are mostly restricted to Alberta, and since almost all of Alberta’s oil is exported, there’s not much to talk about for the rest of Canada other than opposing pipelines.
Once we take Oil and Gas out of the picture it becomes clear that we have to look at Transportation. Here’s a Pareto chart of the remaining emissions by sector:
Tumblr media
Transportation is by far the biggest emissions source, and it’s not even close. The next place sector doesn’t even produce half the emissions transportation does.
Transportation is also interesting to talk about because, unlike oil and gas, it directly impacts all of us. Each province and territory has people and things that need to move around. If we dig in we might find that some provinces do it better than others, and find areas where we can learn from each other.
2. Let’s Break It Down Further!
So what’s nice about the NIR is it breaks the numbers down into useful subcategories. Within Transportation, there’s Passenger (moving people), Freight (moving stuff), and Other. Here’s a pie chart of how that breaks down:
Tumblr media
With each of passenger and freight transportation accounting for about half of all transportation emissions, clearly we have to tackle both. So let’s look at them one at a time.
3. Moving People Depends On How Many People Need To Move. Shocking.
Ok so you might assume that passenger emissions would be proportional to population; the more people moving around, the more emissions generated. And yeah good assumption. Here’s a graph showing passenger transport emissions from each province against population:
Tumblr media
The dots are all pretty damn close to that linear trendline, meaning yeah emissions from passenger transportation in Canada correlate pretty dang strongly with population. While this is quite logical it’s a bit disappoint. To me, this means it’s likely that no province is really leading the pack for passenger vehicle emissions reduction, so there aren’t many lessons to be learned. We’ll probably have to look internationally for best practices we can copy.
What the graph also shows that I didn’t mention before is that you can separate the data into personal vehicles (cars, light trucks, motorcycles) and mass transportation (bus, rail, domestic aviation). When you do this, you see that personal vehicles account for nearly all (91%) of the emissions from passenger transportation. That’s a big deal. To me, that means that if we want to do better on passenger transportation, we have to figure out how to get people to drive less, or at least drive more efficient cars. Improving our mass transportation vehicles by doing things like replacing buses with electric ones is nice and all but unless that translates to people getting out of their cars and onto those buses the impact will be small.
4. BuT wE cAn Go DeEpEr!
I have one more graph for the passenger data that brings up some interesting questions, so stay with me.
Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan (in that order) produce the most emissions from passenger vehicles. These five provinces account for 87% of Canada’s passenger vehicle emissions. Here’s a graph of the per-person emissions from passenger vehicles for these provinces since 1991:
Tumblr media
So I know I said all provinces are doing about the same when you control for population, and they are but if you zoom in a few interesting things show up here that raise questions I definitely don’t have answers for.
BC and Ontario match really closely from 1991 to 1998, and then they split up with BC doing better than Ontario. What happened in 1998?
BC and Ontario are now close again because BC’s per-person emissions have been climbing since 2011. What happened in 2011?
Saskatchewan has been steadily increasing its per person passenger emissions with a big increase from 2005 to 2010. During this same time period, the four largest provinces all had per-person emissions decreases. What is going on in Saskatchewan, especially since 2005?
These would be fun research questions!
5. We Also Move Stuff And Things
Oh yeah Freight. So freight is currently responsible for 41% of Canada’s transportation emissions, but this wasn’t always the case. Take a look at this graph comparing emissions from passenger and freight vehicles since 1990:
Tumblr media
While passenger vehicle emissions have been increasing with Canada’s population, emissions from freight vehicles have increased twice as quickly. Especially between 1995 and 2012. That’s super interesting! I would love to know why.
We can also graph freight emissions against population for each province the way we did for passenger emissions. Here is that:
Tumblr media
Looks a bit different! The dots aren’t sitting nicely on the line anymore. Ontario and Quebec have lower per-person freight emissions while Alberta and Saskatchewan have higher emissions. Perhaps Ontario and Quebec have some best practices to share! Would love to look into that.
6. BuT wE cAn Go DeEpEr (again)!
Ok last graph. Remember how 5 provinces are responsible for 87% of passenger vehicle emissions? Those same 5 provinces produce 88% of freight emissions. So here’s the graph of freight emissions per person from those provinces since 1991:
Tumblr media
We already knew that some provinces were doing better than others, but now we can really see some differences! Here are my highlights:
Quebec and Ontario match really closely, like too close to be a coincidence. I know they’re neighbours and ship a lot between each other but there’s gotta be more to it than that.
From 1991 to 1995, the big 4 provinces were pretty flat. Then Alberta yeeted itself up for almost two decades while the other three stayed pretty flat. What happened in Alberta from 1995 to 2014 that didn’t happen in the rest of the country? And how did Alberta start to turn it around in 2014?
Once again, Saskatchewan has been steadily increasing its per person freight emissions with a big increase starting around 2005. What is going on in Saskatchewan, especially since 2005, and is it the same thing that’s driving passenger vehicle emissions?
7. So What Did We Learn Kiddos? (The TLDR)
I had fun I hope you did too. After all these graphs here’s what we got!
Pembina pointed out that:
Alberta and Ontario produce 60% of Canada’s GHG emissions,
Oil and Gas, Transport, and Buildings are responsible for 70% of our emissions
I pointed out that:
Transportation produces almost as much GHG emissions as oil and gas, and more than twice as much as the next most polluting sector.
Emissions among Canadian provinces from passenger vehicles are highly correlated to population, so we probably have to look outside the country for new best practices that will have a major impact.
Personal vehicles produce 9 times as much emissions as buses, trains, and airplanes combined, so we should focus more on getting people out of their cars rather than things like electric buses (though we should do that too).
Emissions from freight vehicles have increased twice as much as those from passenger vehicles since 1990
Alberta and Saskatchewan have the highest per-person emissions from freight vehicles, while Ontario and Quebec have the lowest.
I asked the following questions:
Why did BC suddenly start doing better on per-person passenger vehicle emissions than Ontario in 1998 when they were very similar before then?
Why have BC’s per-person passenger vehicle emissions been climbing since 2011?
Why did Saskatchewan have a big increase in per-person passenger vehicle emissions from 2005 to 2010 while the four largest provinces all had per-person emissions decreases?
Why have Quebec’s and Ontario’s per-person freight emissions been almost identical to each other since 1990, and what are they doing that other provinces can learn from?
Why did Alberta have a sudden increase in per-person freight emissions starting in 1995 that lasted until 2014 while the other largest provinces stayed fairly flat? And how did Alberta start to turn it around in 2014?
Again, why did Saskatchewan have a big increase in per-person freight emissions starting around 2005? Is it the same thing that’s driving passenger vehicle emissions?
So in the end after all that I basically just took a starting point and made a whole bunch of starting points for further research but that’s showbiz (read: research) baby! Anyway if anybody has answers to any of my Qs, do let me know! I luv 2 learn. But seriously if anybody actually reads this whole thing and wants to talk about it I would love to talk about it.

MOVING TO CANADA IS A JOKE...The Economic, Military, and Social Integration of North America
Tumblr media
Eh? I can think of scores of reasons to move to Canada (or opt for the Mexican Riviera) . . . any place but Babylon the Great: The USA. The War in Iraq . . . or better yet: The entire Military-Industrial Complex sucking the life-blood out of Americana for starters. Or, how about the whole hedonistic culture of greed, avaricious appetites, and super sizing all things godly and ungodly--from Hollywood to Mega Churches; indeed, ours is a "city set on a hill which cannot be hid" but the closer you get to this glittering jewel, the more it resembles the "Little Shop of Horrors," you know, that flesh-eating plant crying out: Feed me, Seymour! Conspicuous consumption of a nation which spends $1.8 Billion more each day than the whole earth combined and finds herself some $14 Trillion in debt (National Debt + Balance of Payment/Trade Debts) is a bit too much, wouldn't you say?--after all, she represents but 5% of the world's population.
Come on, half the eagle is in a declared state of emergency and the overt identification by Big Brother of all things human is prepared and/or is itching to pounce upon American liberties once thought sacrosanct by both the ACLU and the NRA by euphemistic legislation called Patriotic Acts, and finally, a cashless society where all of us are implanted with chips awaiting true identity and debit through scanning devices at your local Safeway.
The clock is ticking. Peak oil, where American's "zero sum game" is played out--for you to gain I must loose--refuses to share her bounty with the Asian tigers of China and India; and, of course, they are more than pleased with our indulgence. Like Rome, our legions amongst the world's "provinces," are stretched thin--and the draft can't be all that far off if we're to maintain our economic edge and SUV-lifestyle (latest stats for the past two years show that 58% of all vehicles purchased in the USA are SUVs, pickups, or plain old gas guzzlers). And, as if these outrageous consequences weren't enough to abandon ship--toss in the worst natural disaster ever to afflict the homeland: Katrina; man, wait till we finance that one!
So . . . isn't it about time to flee to Canada or head for the Mexican Riviera? Eh? Canada's a safe haven for pot-people and same-sex marriage is the rage. Crime's relatively low compared to the lower 48 and the death penalty's been outlawed for nearly thirty years. Finally, most of the 125,000 Viet-Nam Era draft dodgers who fled to Canada stuck around and now constitute the leading edge of all the above progressive life-style. Wow, we're talkin' about socialized medicine for all--a veritable paradise compared to the inflictions of them patriots down under. Cheap drugs (includes tons of cannabis), affordable housing, tiny military budget, etc., etc.--a little cold, but you'll get used to it.
Finally, if Hollywood's collective apoplexy over President Bush's election can be believed--we're outta here . . . a few of these righteous indignations (unfulfilled) are duly noted, if for nothing else, their entertainment value. Notwithstanding the Hollywood stars and directors who claimed exodus was their only option under Bush--Barbra Streisand, Alec Baldwin, Michael Moore, Robert Altman, Lynn Redgrave, Pierre Salinger (now deceased), and Cher--all found the allure of Babylon on the Hudson irresistible; so much for leftist vibratos. Misquoted or just plain fluff--they all abide within the walls of the crystal palace celebrating the party atmosphere, as they star in a movie sequel to the "Left Behind Series" entitled: Talk is Cheap, Follow Us falling in love with a single mom quotes.
ECONOMIC INTEGRATION VIA NAFTA, CAFTA, FTAA--Enter the "Three Amigos"
Patriots would exclaim we're selling off and out America; globalists would see dollars galore; socialists would see an on-going rip off; and a whole bunch of people in the middle could care less (a.k.a. "victims anonymous").
Meanwhile Deanna Spingola in "Building a North American Community" (July 15, 2005) keeps telling it like it is:
"While our sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers and fathers having been spilling their blood in the sands of Iraq under the guise of restoring the country to the Iraqi citizens, our president is in the process of giving our country to the elite One World Order insiders. While our president is requiring protected borders in Iraq, he is obliterating, not only our southern, but our northern borders." Actually, Deanna (and you've got to read her entire article) is referring to the Bush/Fox/Martin meeting (USA/Mexico/Canada) held at Baylor University in Waco, Texas on 23 March 2005, where they were busy about establishing the "Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America" - to wit, the SPPNA's troika:
"We, the elected leaders of Canada, Mexico, and the United States, have met in Texas to announce the establishment of the Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America.
"Over the past decade, our three nations have taken important steps to expand economic opportunity for our people and to create the most vibrant and dynamic trade relationship in the world (i.e., NAFTA; my insert). Since September 11 2001, we have also taken significant new steps to address the threat of terrorism and to enhance the security of our people. "But much still remains to be done. In a rapidly changing world, we must develop new avenues of cooperation that will make our open societies safer and more secure, our businesses more competitive, and our economies more resilient.
"Our Partnership will accomplish these objectives through a trilateral effort to increase the security, prosperity, and quality of life of our citizens. This work will be based on the principle that our security and prosperity are mutually dependent and complementary, and will reflect our shared belief in freedom, economic opportunity, and strong democratic values and institutions. It will also help consolidate our efforts within a North American framework, to meet security and economic challenges, and promote the full potential of our people, by reducing regional disparities and increasing opportunities for all."
COUNCIL ON FOREIGN RELATIONS--They're at it again!
Now don't go conspiratorial on me . . . hee-hee . . . don't need to . . . let the truth speak for itself:
It was on May 17, 2005 the CFR formalized its "Independent Task Force" to review at length the parameters of such a three-pact agreement among the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This 31-member force de jure was chaired by John F. Manley, Pedro Aspe, and William F. Weld and vice-chaired by: Robert A. Pastor, Thomas P. d'Aquino, Andrés Rozental. Cooperating with the CFR's efforts were the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and the Consejo Mexicano de Asuntos Internacionales.
Indeed, the composite document released by the aforementioned is the very title of Spingola's article . . .
No wonder that Spingola and other American patriots view this as the "Great American Give-a-way!"
Take a gander at their timid prognostications and guess why moving to Canada's a joke . . .for what NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and CAFTA (Central American Free Trade Agreement) could not destroy, FTAA (Free Trade Area/Agreement of the Americas . . . a.k.a. "Building a North American Community") fully intends:
"We are asking the leaders of the United States, Mexico, and Canada to be bold and adopt a vision of the future that is bigger than, and beyond, the immediate problems of the present . . . they could be the architects of a new community of North America, not mere custodians of the status quo." (Canadian co-chair, John P. Manley, Former Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance). CHRISTIANS ARE THE MOST VULNERABLE
Now, listen to Spingola's assessment of all this--and, don't think she's some brainless Libertarian gone amok down in Texas somewhere . . .
"This basically means that Americans must give up their freedoms and hard won sovereignty along with all resources for the greater good of the 'New Community.' It is a socialistic equalization designed to make slaves of everyone in all three countries. This will occur as a result of the secret, subversive activities of our ruling elitist who have never sacrificed anything except their integrity. When it comes time to sell this socialistic venture, Bush will adopt his multipurpose 'Christian' stance and use every possible guilt maneuver to encourage this good hearted Christian country to open our hearts to the less fortunate. This is a ploy to make all of us less fortunate. There will be many who will fall for this scam under the pretext of Christianity. If we think Christians are media maligned now, just wait! We will be the most hated inmates in the camp!" Wow! Powerful projections here, right? I'm sure we'll somehow meet up with Spingola one day--if not in glory, then in some gulag cell contemplating how all of this got out of hand . . . I mean, if Shirley McClain went out on a limb, Spingola's going out on a twig:
"All of this is done under the facade of protecting us - from terrorists? The worse terrorists we face are those who serve in our government. Another day that shall live in infamy, 9/11, has done much to serve the purposes of those whose main goal is to establish the One World Order. What an opportunistic event! It couldn't have worked any better if they had planned it!" O CANADA - VIVA MEXICO - Life is good!
Of course most Americans, Canadians, and Mexicans can't stomach all of this unification at once; thus, the GREAT TRANSITION awaits us all:
Unified military command? Listen to what the CFR plans for your future:
1. Establish a common security perimeter by 2010. 2. Develop a North American Border Pass with biometric identifiers. 3. Develop a unified border action plan and expand border customs facilities. The CFR web site is effusive in its sacrifice of sovereignty:
4. Create a single economic space: 5. Adopt a common external tariff. 6. Allow for the seamless movement of goods within North America. 7. Move to full labor mobility between Canada and the U.S. 8. Develop a North American energy strategy that gives greater emphasis to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases - a regional alternative to Kyoto. Hey, and let's shoot the gap - listen, we're talkin' INTEGRATION BIG TIME . . . and we're not whistling Di

What are your favourite head/canon things about Alberta
[cracks knuckles] [stretches fingers]
so i’ll just start with a disclaimer - i use sherrys/iamp/whatever alberta and i realize ive been getting a lot of followers who are part of rp groups and whatever or people who might be interested in adding some depth to their own ocs so feel free to like… think about these things if you want if you’re thinking of doing an alberta oc?? I guess
so since that mysterious slash implies what are my fave canonical things about AB too I’ll say that there isn’t much- I go with what sherry says on canon rather than IAMP and PC because while there are a lot of things I had influence over in both projos there are a lot of things I would have done differently so we’ll start with the bio
Canon Stuff
literally all the things are accurate sooo its hard lol. Obviously the political situation has changed and the economic situation is its usual rollercoaster (WELL… but thats another time). I gotta say that the ‘alberta beef is the best thing that’s ever happened to me’ is really hitting home right now because i didnt realize how SPOILED i was by AAA beef until I got to Ontario ToT (ngl the pork here is super good and saves me money but the BEEF aAAA)
also my edmonton bias shines through at ‘he hates a part of himself called calgary’ thats by far my second fave B)))
Headcanon Stuff
ok where to start I will try to not make this an essay and i can elaborate more if you’re curious
- a lot of people will wonder about whether a province lives in the capital or the biggest city etc. and I have to say in Bertie’s case it is NEITHER. He’d never willingly live in (d)E(a)dmonton (sorry ed ilu) because Ed represents Government which he Hates and while he would spend a fair bit of time in Calgary he gets claustrophobic/exhausted - he still in my mind represents more of the rural bits of the province than the cities. I think he might move around a little, but he probably lives on a ranch between both cities but within sight of the mountains. I’m sure he has a place to stay in each city, but he’s a country boy at heart and appreciates his space, peace and quiet.
- Particularly space because Where else is he going to keep his 3 trucks + 2 ATVs + horses + 100000 cows + boat + canoe + kayak + all his camping junk + motorbikes + dirtbikes + tractor + other junk that people leave at his place
- that said his ‘birthplace’ is the southern ‘half’ of the province so he tends to kind of hover around there more- as i said he owns a ranch rather than a farm because the Quality Ranch Land is in the south and the Good Farm Land is in the north (and being eaten up by ugly houses ugh)
- still I think he spends a fair amount of time working up north in the Fort Mac area because Why Not make All the money. Even if you’re a rancher boy in the middle of nowhere, everyone in this province has ties to the oil industry one way or another. It wouldn’t make sense for him NOT to work in Oil and Gas because it’s literally the only job in the province lmao.
- His driving playlist consists of: Dean Brody, Corb Lund, Keith Urban, Ian Tyson, and the obligatory Nickelback which he listens to Un-ironically but also to piss off/drown out passengers when they’re annoying him
- He’s easily annoyed. By Everything. And Everyone. He’s the current national scapegoat and he takes it Extremely Personally depending on the context but also he has a relatively affectionate relationship with everyone and usually expresses his affection by pointed jabs.
- like he literally gets along with everyone on a personal level and not just because he buys them drinks- his worst relationships are probably with BC and Ontario and that’s just because he lives to irritate them and they respond with an appropriate amount of salt. He still doesnt mind hanging out with them and bc/ab/on/qc is an unstoppable team. He just gets extremely sensitive when anyone asks to borrow money from him and will give you an earful of ‘i work SO HARD for this money to put FOOD on YOUR TaBLe’
- generally really tight fisted with money………. only when other people are looking. he makes a big deal about how little he spends on essential services and you just look at him like ‘so you’re saying you have the money to get all this crap for this rodeo coming up but you dont have the money to take yourself to the hospital after’ and hes like [coughs up blood anime style] ‘im ok i have whiskey and benadryl at home’ [adjusts his diamond studded hat]
- really big on loyalty and straightforward conversations and has NO patience for any hypocrisy or doublespeak no matter how small. The slightest of things can send him reeling with Betrayal. Also this makes him either tight lipped or TMI, there is no in between.

Canada and Energy: Part 2 – The Bad
Guest blog by S. A. Shelley In the previous blog about energy in Canada, I presented evidence that Canada has abundance of energy, ranging from hydrocarbon to existing renewable energy supplies. In essence, Canada has similar potential to Norway and even at a larger scale. Norway, like Canada, has been a prolific producer of oil and gas and continues to be so, but Norway is already in a position to be able to transition fully to renewable energy and has undertaken steps in that direction and to curtail fossil fuel consumption (see Independent.co.uk, and Fortune.com).
But where Norway has long term vision and broad social and political consensus, Canada has acrimony, mismanagement and corruption.
I. Oil and Gas Wealth Squandered
Back in 1976, Alberta had the good idea of establishing a “Heritage Fund” to accumulate some oil wealth into a fund to benefit Albertans (and Canada) to save for the future, to diversify the economy (away from fossil fuels) and to improve the quality of life for residents. At about the same time, Alaska established its Permanent Fund and around 15 years later, Norway established its Sovereign Wealth Fund with similar goals. Let’s compare the growth of these funds (Fig. 1).
Fig. 1
The values in Fig. 1 are not adjusted for inflation. If I adjusted the figures for inflation then it would appear that the Canadian Fund is losing real value and that they should just throw in the towel. Reading the annual reports for the Heritage Funds it becomes obvious that Canadian governments did not have the discipline necessary to achieve the fund’s objectives and then through constant changes in policies, raided the fund for pet projects.
Why does this matter? Because Norway now has ample financial resources to pay for a transition to a fully renewable energy economy and to diversity its economy away from hydrocarbon production. Canada has no similar fiscal resource to accomplish such lofty objectives in the time frame espoused by its politicians. In the prior blog, I noted that the Prime Minister praised the good fortune of having 173 billion barrels of oil sands resources. However, just two months before that speech in Houston the same Prime Minister gave a speech in Ontario in which he argued that it is necessary for Canada to divest itself from oil sands.
The net result is that Canada, and Alberta in particular, is going into the age of oil retirement without any pension or any real plan to live out the post oil age comfortably.
II. Canadian Oil and Gas Assets Will be Stranded in the Future and Therefore Be Worthless
For the last few years, Canada has struggled to get its oil to market. Any online search will deliver tons of news about pipeline problems, foreign funded protester problems, production problems, and ineffective government action. Coupled with flattening global oil demand and increasing oil supply, the result is that for the better part of a year Western Canada Select has been trading at a discount (Fig. 2 – sources Statista.com, Ceri )
Fig. 2
In effect for the whole last year, producing and selling Canadian oil has a zero sum game, most likely a negative undertaking, because in Fig. 2, I only use the lowest production costs and lowest transport costs.
If Canada can’t find markets and continues to sell oil at a discount, especially if that discount results in producing oil at cost or even below cost, then instead of having $800,000 per capita in the bank (less production costs) Canadians will now have $0 in the bank. Carbon taxes won’t kill Canadian oil production, lack of access to markets will.
Aside:  Online searches will also bring about loads of stories about how toxic Canada’s oil is. Newsflash, all oil is toxic. Comparing again to Norway, both Norway and Canada have some of the strictest environmental, health and safety standards for oil production. Whereas other less open and democratic states focus on maximizing production without giving a care about environmental or safety issues.  So really, where should environmentalists focus their protests, in Canada or in Venezuela?
Fig. 3 Common site in Venezuela these days (source Bloomberg)
Without pipelines to transfer oil to ports to access world markets, Canada will be very dependent upon the U.S. to buy its oil using existing pipelines and existing rail services. American refiners along the Gulf Coast have been happy to buy cheap Canadian oil to blend for products, especially in the wake of oil production failures in Venezuela, but now comes another scary part for Canada. American refiners may find other suppliers, or worse yet, if Venezuela falls, then the new regime in Venezuela will be quick to ramp up production. The best market for heavy oil is the U.S. Gulf Coast refiners who can use either Canadian heavy crude or Venezuelan heavy crude in their production. There are pipeline constraints and protesters along the route from Canada to the U.S. refiners, but there are no such blockages on the sea between Venezuela and the Gulf of Mexico.
Furthermore, transporting crude by rail from Canada to the U.S. Gulf Coast can cost from $10 to $15 per barrel. Shipping a barrel of crude from Venezuela by tanker costs around $2.
III. Hydropower
A big impediment to developing more hydropower in Canada is the poor relationship that the Federal Government has with indigenous nations. There are other reasons, but this one is important enough to address specifically and I’ll give a small, true story, which local folks will be happy to discuss if you ask.
On Vancouver Island the village of Tahsis is located within the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation area. There is hydropower potential in the area and a few years back a power developer started to develop a Run of the River hydro plant.  Run of the River hydro is supposed to be the least environmentally altering means of producing power. However, the firm working on the project decided that it would be necessary to alter the river run and without consulting anyone started dynamiting the river which then affected fish stocks. (The engineering firm was from the U.S. working for a Canadian developer.) That type of blast first approach to development is horrible but unfortunately characteristic of a lot of large Canadian projects. Fortunately, in Tahsis the First Nations managed to stop the project (and, if I had been there at the time, I would also have jumped all over the dumb-dumb engineering firm and developer for such an approach). Houston is the oil and gas capital of the world, and had tempestuous beginnings, but we’ve long since learned that it’s not prudent nor necessary to throw one’s weight around by dynamiting things or running rough shod over environments and indigenous residents. There are better ways.
IV. Wind Power
The first commercial wind farm in Canada was located in Alberta and became operational in 1993. Since then all provinces have been adding windfarms, with most capacity additions coming on line between 2010 and now. But let’s focus on Alberta and Ontario. Fig 4 compares historical electricity prices for those two provinces. In 2013 Alberta added its largest windfarm to date, about 150 MW capacity. Ontario, since then has been adding a lot more wind, as seen in Fig. 5.
Fig. 4
Fig. 5
What was going on in Ontario? It seemed that the more wind power that Ontario added, the higher its electricity prices went. “Correlation is not Causation”, correct. But in this case, Fig. 5 actually show a causation-effect graph. It’s true, because in Ontario, the Liberal government mismanaged implementation of wind energy (and other renewable energy) which consequently drove up electricity prices. During the same time, in Alberta, they got it right, with electricity prices falling.
V. Invest in Energy, Just not in Canada?
As we’ve seen, even if one can produce heavy oil in Canada and get it to market, it’s likely that one will lose money. Instead of working on ways to improve the oil business in Canada, governments seem hell bent on destroying it even more by applying carbon taxes and implementing other insanities. Diversification into plastics is, in my opinion, a dubious long term solution as the plastics industry faces pressure to reduce output as the world moves towards using less plastic (see prior blog) or using bio-plastics materials that are degradable. Politicians in Canada at times get their priorities by looking backwards and working accordingly.
The situation with natural gas is almost as convoluted as with Canadian oil. There are bottlenecks to export. And unlike oil demand, which is forecast to fall soon enough, gas demand will remain strong for some decades.
Hydropower could be brought on line if, and it’s a big if, the Federal Canadian government and its preferred contractor would stop patronizing indigenous nations as charities and instead treat them with dignity and respect and as equals.
The experience of wind power in Ontario has damaged the case for wind power in Canada and elsewhere. But if people could look past the government mismanagement in Ontario and instead to the successes in Alberta and Texas, Canada could then benefit from cheap, renewable power.
But these are a lot of “ifs” and Canada will have to get past the ugly in order to thrive again. It’s a choice between lower taxes, cleaner energy for all, and allowing initiative and ingenuity, or the government taking a share in home ownership, mandating speech, and dictating economics.

Vivian Krause: Rachel Notley, the Rockefellers and Alberta’s landlocked oil
Alberta is in the final days before an election and the backbone industry of its economy is practically broken because all pipeline projects out of the province have been stalled or ended. This didn’t happen for no reason. This was planned and is precisely what a Rockefeller Brothers Fund campaign was funded to bring about.
The Tar Sands Campaign has been running for more than a decade with financial help from the US$870-million Rockefeller family philanthropic foundation. The goal of the campaign, as CBC reported in January, is to sabotage all pipeline projects that would export crude oil from Western Canada to lucrative overseas markets.
Northern Gateway, Energy East, Keystone XL, Trans Mountain and Line 3 have all been targeted. Most of the talk about this campaign has focused on how this activism chokes the oil industry, but tax documents indicate it also takes aim at natural gas.
The reason Alberta needs pipelines is so that local producers aren’t forced to sell only into the U.S. market, often at a steep discount. As it is, Alberta forfeits billions of dollars in lost royalties and revenue because there’s no infrastructure for getting large volumes of oil to overseas markets where buyers pay more.
Gwyn Morgan: Talk about ‘collusion’: How foreign-backed anti-oil activists infiltrated Canada’s government
Canadians are realizing foreign groups sabotaged our energy economy — for no good reason
Terence Corcoran: The ugly pipeline war is no accident. It was the plan
Canadian producers are stuck selling into the United States for whatever they get, but if Alberta is ever going to complete a new pipeline or extend an existing one, it needs a premier who has the courage and the ability to stand up to the Rockefellers and bring the Tar Sands Campaign to an end.
Until very recently, I was convinced that Premier Rachel Notley was sincere and committed to leading Canada into the global oil market, a daunting challenge for any politician because it means breaking the U.S. monopoly that has kept Canada over a barrel while benefiting U.S. interests to the tune of billions.
But now, sad to say, it is clear to me that Notley will never do what is necessary for any Alberta pipeline project to go ahead. My opinion changed because of an email sent by Leadnow, an anti-pipeline activist, on April 1, and forwarded to me on April 3.
By way of background, it bears mention that I have been working since July 2018 with Notley’s government to provide information and assist her team in taking the necessary steps to break the pipeline gridlock.
On April 1, Leadnow forwarded an undated email sent out by Duncan Kinney, executive director of Progress Alberta, a non-profit advocacy group.
The email states: “We’re going into our fourth week of digital door knocking and text banking and it has been incredible. We can talk to a lot of voters in very little time and we’ve identified thousands of supporters that we will be getting out to the polls.”
The email also explained what Progress Alberta is doing to defeat Jason Kenney and the United Conservative Party: “We’re holding texting parties every week in the lead up to the election, where we text thousands of voters across the province to make sure they don’t vote for Kenney’s UCP.”
Contacted by phone and via Twitter on April 3, Kinney did not deny that the email forwarded by Leadnow was sent by him. Leadnow’s executive director did not reply to tweets about this matter.
Both Leadnow and Progress Alberta are partially funded — US$62,843 (2016-2017) and US$162,587 (2013-2016), respectively — by the Tar Sands Campaign, U.S. tax returns show.
At the same time that Leadnow forwarded Kinney’s email to Leadnow’s supporters, Logan McIntosh, an executive director noted that Leadnow would not be directly involved in the election, but suggested, “With the election just two weeks away, will you sign up to join Progress Alberta’s campaign to stop Kenney?”
By encouraging supporters to join Progress Alberta, Leadnow effectively joined the campaign against the UCP.
Leadnow was created as part of the Strategic Incubation program of a Rockefeller-funded U.S. organization called the Online Progressive Engagement Network.
Duncan Kinney, executive director of Progress Alberta, in 2017
Put another way, Rockefeller-supported organizations are helping to defeat the UCP, the only political party in the Alberta election that is committed to breaking the U.S. monopoly on Alberta’s overseas oil exports.
Does this explain why Notley refuses to stand up to the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and its campaign to landlock Canadian oil? Is this why Notley has rarely if ever publicly mentioned the Rockefeller-funded Tar Sands Campaign? These are fair questions.
So far, I have not found any record of Notley saying anything against the brazen involvement in the election by groups whose explicit goal, landlocking Alberta crude, is squarely against her province’s economic interests. Notley is turning a blind eye, or she knows about it and doesn’t care. Or worse yet, she consents.
Notley did address the activism against Alberta when she became premier in 2015 — or so it seemed. Her Climate Leadership Plan, introduced in November that year, included everything activists had demanded: she increased the carbon tax and capped allowable emissions.
The Tar Sands Campaign called the plan “a huge step forward,” so hopes were high that Alberta would finally break the gridlock that keeps Canada benched out of global energy markets. But no.
Far from letting up, activism against Alberta pipelines raged on and the U.S. funding continued. Rockefeller’s most recent payment on record was US$200,000 in May 2018 to New Venture Fund, based in Washington, D.C. New Venture has funded at least 10 Canadian environmental groups involved in the Tar Sands Campaign, including the Pembina Institute, Sierra Club BC and Living Oceans Society.
youtube
Also in May, the Notley government created the world’s largest boreal forest preserve. It’s huge, twice the size of Vancouver Island. Surely the campaign against Alberta would finally be over. But, again, no.
Back in 2010, when the Tar Sands Campaign was first reported in The Financial Post, there was virtually no information about it. The Rockefeller funding behind the campaign only came to light because of three little words, “Tar Sands Campaign,” that I noticed quite unexpectedly in the course of other work. I soon realized that the same foundations that had brought the salmon farming industry to its knees were turning their attention to Alberta oil.
More information about the campaign has since become publicly available. One source is a report on a 2010 workshop held in Tofino, B.C. In this document, Michael Marx, the Tar Sands Campaign’s long-time director, said, “The campaign is about trying to persuade business to stop establishing offices in the province (of Alberta).” Sure enough, that is what has happened.
At some point in 2016 or 2017, Marx posted a description of the Tar Sands Campaign on the website of his organization, Corporate Ethics International (CorpEthics). One sentence jumped out: “From the very beginning, the campaign strategy was to land-lock the tar sands so their crude could not reach the international market where it could fetch a high price per barrel.”
That sentence was like finding the lid on a 10,000-piece jigsaw puzzle that I had been trying to put together since 2010.
Shortly after Licia Corbella at The Calgary Herald and Wendy Mesley at the CBC reported on the Tar Sands Campaign, CorpEthics entirely rewrote its description of the campaign, removing the sentence about how its strategy, from the beginning, has been to landlock Canadian oil.
A protest in Washington against Canada’s oilsands.
CorpEthics also removed the following sentence that described the role of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Hewlett Foundation, a private foundation established by Hewlett-Packard co-founder William Hewlett and his wife, Flora: “In 2008, two major U.S. foundations asked CorpEthics to recruit the groups, develop the strategy, create a coordinated campaign, and act as a re-granting agency for the North American Tar Sands Campaign.”
The Tar Sands Campaign is not the only entity that the Hewlett Foundation funds to influence the price of oil. Hewlett also funds an organization called Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE), granting it a total of at least US$3 million since 2006.
Hewlett explicitly funded SAFE “to help business leaders become compelling voices for government action to reduce U.S. oil dependence and vulnerability of U.S. businesses to high and volatile oil prices.” Evidently, Hewlett doesn’t hesitate to influence the price of oil — as long as it favours the U.S.
In the fall of 2017, I began to seek legal counsel to find out whether it is within the law for American charitable foundations to try to influence the price of oil in the U.S. by putting Canada on the global oil market sidelines.
The following spring, I retained a Calgary law firm, which reviewed my research, did additional work of its own and provided its legal opinion on May 31, 2018.
Noting that the target of the Tar Sands Campaign is the oilsands and that the people of Alberta are the owners of the oilsands (not the companies that lease them), and that the provincial government represents the people, the law firm identified the Government of Alberta as a natural plaintiff in potential legal action against the funders and coordinating entities of the campaign.
On July 10, 2018, this legal opinion paper was provided to Notley’s government. Nathan Rotman, Notley’s chief of staff, confirmed by phone that it was received by the premier, along with a 10-page memo prepared for her by the government’s lawyers. Since then, Notley’s office — including her chief of staff and others — has consistently given the impression that the government was considering legal action against Rockefeller.
In December 2018, the premier’s office told The Edmonton Journal, “We will continue to consider all options going forward, legal and otherwise, in our fight for market access and top dollar for our oil.”
On Jan. 16, a senior staff person in Notley’s government texted me that there had been “a log jam,” but that it had been resolved. “Things moved way slower than I had hoped but I think I’ve finally broken the log jam,” he wrote. That same week, the same senior employee said the government was moving forward on the legal front “within days.” And then, nothing.
In hindsight, it’s clear that Notley never really intended to challenge Rockefeller. If she had wanted to, she could have mobilized the government’s lawyers or retained outside counsel and begun litigation in July 2018. How different things might be if only she had done so.
At the end of August 2018, the Federal Court of Appeal ruled in favour of a group of applicants seeking to stall Kinder Morgan Inc.’s Trans Mountain Pipeline project. What wasn’t publicly known at the time is that the application had been funded, at least partially, as part of the Tar Sands Campaign.
We know this now because Living Oceans Society, one of the applicants to the Federal Court of Appeal, reported to the Internal Revenue Service in U.S. tax returns that it spent at least US$63,547 on this litigation. This information did not become publicly available to me until 11 days after the Federal Court of Appeal had ruled.
The origin of the US$63,547 is not publicly reported, but Living Oceans spent that amount in 2016 on litigation to stop the Trans Mountain pipeline by intervening in its regulatory review and bringing judicial review proceedings.
“The Society worked with non-profit lawyers at Ecojustice to intervene in the regulatory review of the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline and tanker project,” Living Oceans reported to the IRS.
Ecojustice is the entity that brought the application to the Federal Court of Appeal. Ecojustice is also funded to participate in the Tar Sands Campaign, and has been paid US$815,000 (2009-2017) via San Francisco-based Tides Foundation for its participation in the Tar Sands Campaign.
Living Oceans also reported to the IRS that it “instructed its lawyers to bring judicial review proceedings against both the recommendation report of the National Energy Board and the ultimate decision of the Federal Cabinet to approve the project.”
In other words, the application to the Federal Court of Appeal was funded as part of the Tar Sands Campaign. This is not to say that the funding influenced the judge’s ruling. Rather, the application to the court was funded as part of the Tar Sands Campaign to landlock Alberta oil.
In Judge Eleanor Dawson’s ruling that paralyzed the Trans Mountain project last August, she referred to the applicants as “not-for-profit organizations.” No mention was made that three of the applicants had received at least US$700,000 to stop the very project before her court.
Alberta Premier Rachel Notley responds to recommendations from the National Energy Board for proceeding with the Trans Mountain pipeline on Feb. 22, 2019.
According to tax documents filed with the IRS, Tides Foundation funded the Tsleil-Wauteuth First Nation specifically “to stop and oppose the Kinder Morgan pipeline and tanker project.”
The Tsleil-Wauteuth First Nation was the lead applicant to the Federal Court of Appeal and Tides paid it at least US$270,000 (2009-2017) for the Tar Sands Campaign. Information on the amount that may have been paid in 2018 is not yet publicly available.
In ruling that the government needed to consult, and do so “meaningfully,” the court instructed the government to consult with the very same First Nation that is being funded to stop the project by non-Canadian sources with broad interests that stand to benefit by stalling the Trans Mountain project.
How different the court’s ruling might have been (indeed, the entire proceeding may have been conducted differently) if only Notley had initiated some form of legal action in July 2018 when she was provided a solid footing on which to begin and urged to do so.
At the very least, some form of legal action would have put on court record that the Tar Sands Campaign explicitly funds activist groups — including First Nations — to landlock Canadian oil.
Notley had a choice. She could have taken action against the Rockefeller Brothers Fund.
Notley could have defended Alberta and, indeed, all of Canada. She didn’t.
Notley has rarely if ever mentioned the Rockefeller name in public even though it is their money, their campaign, that has sabotaged the backbone industry of Alberta’s economy.

My question is, after doing online quotes I found that if I lie (or bend the truth) and say I have rode for 3 or 5 years the insurance drops to about $100 dollars a month! Which is great. My wife and I will be staying at my in-laws house for a few months and we have our own vehicles with insurance so therefore we will not be driving my in-laws car. HIs brother was told that his rate insurance will increase because of the extra people in the house. Does any of this sound right to you? Thanks. We ilve in florida.

Does anyone know of a company I can buy flight connection insurance from? I am taking a trip with two separate airline tickets. I had a nice Allstate agent call me and discuss my insurance with me, give me a lower rate and then come pay time, tell me that they require first and last. When asked when I would get the last back, she said when I cancel my policy some day!! What if I don't want to cancel..ever? This does not make sense to me at all. Full coverage Auto Insurance? ?

Hi there guys, I am sorry if this is a boring run of the mill question with an obvious answer, but I am seriously confused! I have two prospect cars to chose between, one is a Honda Jazz, and one is a Ford Fiesta, now to my knowledge the Jazz's insurance group should be around 11-14, (new 1-50 ranking) and the Fiesta should be around 8. A number of sites have confirmed this to be true. But trying to get actual insurance quotes, the Jazz is coming out cheaper, by at least 300.
