SPOILERS for Across the Spiderverse, ganna rant about Gwen’s character and the unnecessary hate she gets. 💀

After finally seeing Spiderverse, yeah…I don’t trust Gwen haters. Like holy shit, I have seen SO many people get on her ass. And I get it. She lied to Miles, she let him down, she screwed up. I think what just ticks me off is that people today just love making everything so fucking black and white. This film isn’t one note, it’s complex. You feel for BOTH sides, not just Miles. I never thought some people would need to have it spelled out but….Miles wasn’t the only character going through something. Gwen does too, and this film explores that, like it legit makes me wonder if people just…turned their brains off whenever the film focused on her, which was legit most of the first half.

Not only was she still carrying the weight of her friend’s death while also feeling guilt of leaving him, but her own father is a cop who is out to get spider woman, believing that she is a criminal who let Peter die. It isn’t easy on Gwen, the opening scene of her trying to get lost in playing the drums and shutting down her band mates shows that she wants to avoid her feelings. Miles was the ONLY friend she had, she didn’t make any other close friends other than Peter. She felt alone, she felt trapped, and once her identity was revealed to her father, the moment he tries to arrest her is her breaking point, it’s why she joined Miguel and the others. She had nowhere to go, she felt like she couldn’t go back and was utterly alone until the spider crew accepted her.

When it comes to Gwen and some of the other characters, some of y’all need to see their perspective. They all lost someone they loved, someone they cared about, and Miguel comes to them and tells them that their trauma happened for a reason. It made them stronger, it made them move forward and created who they are today. They all felt alone at one point, only to realize that they weren’t. They also know that you can’t save everyone, and wether Miguel’s point of view is morally corrupt or not, everyone felt they were doing what was right.

In Gwen’s case, she WANTED to see Miles, and she DID see Miles. She wanted to hang out with him so badly but couldn’t, and you eventually see her guilt for not telling Miles the full story, how he wasn’t supposed to be here, how his dad is going to die and he can’t do anything about it. She felt like she had no choice, Jessica was strict on her (for good reason) and Gwen knew she had a job to do, she like everyone else wanted to save the multiverse and protect everyone, even if it meant breaking Miles, and his dad’s death. I don’t want to make it sound like I’m excusing Gwen, but I find it so funny that people beg for complex and flawed characters, and then when we actually get them, they’re targeted for making mistakes. Cause yeah, god forbid a teenage girl feels alone, doesn’t know what to do, and makes a mistake.

And what’s even more insulting is that Gwen actually REALIZED her mistake. She knows she fucked up, she KNOWS she hurt Miles and let him down, her line of “we’re supposed to be the good guys”- is important because that’s her realizing just how far Miguel took it to a bad level. We all see how utterly broken she is when Miles tells her he should have never come, and broke her web off. In the end, she switches sides and decides to GO AFTER Miles. That’s her making a choice, realizing she was wrong and doing the right thing. Gwen is still a good person guys. She cares for Miles, she’s not a snake or malicious. She’s a troubled teen who wants to be a hero, but was split between two sides, along with the weight on her back regarding her father and her friend. This movie begs the question of saving one person or making sacrifices to safe others. You understand BOTH sides even if Miguel went about it the wrong way.

Speaking of Miguel, the last thing I want to talk about is the obvious sexism going on, cause I feel like that mostly stems from why so many people hate Gwen, cause MAN do people lose brain cells when they’re horny. Like…let me get this straight, y’all get on Gwen, a teenage girl btw….call her a bitch, a snake who doesn’t deserve Miles and a horrible person, but praise a grown man who ridiculed, chased down, clawed, and body slammed a 15 year old kid, calling him a mistake over and over again all because he wanted to save his father???? Yeah okay, if you’re someone who doesn’t like Gwen, fine…but if you hate on her and praise Miguel, a dude who needs therapy and beefed with a 15 year old……then you’re just sexist…I don’t know what to tell you. Same goes for Jessica Drew. Like so many people are quick to say Miguel is complex and that they get where he’s coming from, but when it’s Gwen or Jessica?? They’re just bitches apparently. 🫤

So yeah, regardless of if you like her character or not, Gwen deserves better fr. I for one can’t wait for the next film and to see her mend her relationship with Miles, because they do genuinely have a good relationship, they just need to fix it. That’s all I wanted to say…oh, and one more thing, the way the animators on the movie got treated was NOT okay and the film better be delayed. No way in hell is it coming out next year. Do better Sony/Phil Lord ect, treat your animators right. Kay bye.

i was thinking non-spider au, billionaire-ceo!single-dad!miguel who had his son, gabe (the second gabriel o'hara bc miggy loves his baby brother but has to give his kid a nickname for a distinction), young (i specifically thought of 20-22 but u could always change it to younger for a teen pregnancy thing, i just wanted him in his forties 💀). with a baby mama that walked out. miguel was a big family man nonetheless and had always made time for gabe n his family, made sure to raise him good. but somehow, his kid turned out a womanizing brat who had zero respect for others—the complete opposite of what miguel had taught n raised him to be. n it frustrates him to no end bc he doesn't know where he went wrong.

one day, gabe randomly tells him over dinner that he met someone (reader, ofc) a little older (i'm thinking four years older, so gabe is 22 n reader is 26 bc it's a good age gap for her n mig) n started dating them seriously n miguel was so surprised but he was so proud n so happy for his son, miggy himself didn't care too much for romance bc even after a little over two decades, he still thinks of how his baby mama left him n w his line of work, trust issues were necessary. but he was so happy n proud of his son !! he met reader very few times, once over dinner and a few times as his son's date to an event/ gala they were invited to n he was so glad that his boy was settling for someone so good n mature n intelligent n elegant n pretty and—

And of course, it’s no trouble at all!! If I can offer some kind of advice or tips to someone who wants to start a slow burn (I see you 👀😌 consider me intrigued!), I’m more than happy to!!

I’m going to start off by telling you that this is my first time writing a slow burn, so I’m no expert! I’ve done a lot of writing, at this point 11 years (I feel old), and this is the first time I’ve written a slow burn, so I was hoping for the best in regards to it!! Also, I wasn't aiming for slow burn but the story decided that's what it was going to be, so I just went along with it, tbh😭💀, but I have learned some things and hopefully it helps you!!

The first thing that immediately jumps to my mind is to make the interactions between the characters gradual and small. Start out slowly by having your characters learn about each other. Maybe they’re already acquainted but they realize they’ve only known each other on a surface level, so give them little interactions to start out and build on them, making them more significant and vulnerable as time goes.

Tensions and obstacles are great for slow burn! Maybe one of your characters is oppose to relationships because they were hurt in the past and are afraid to let someone in, or they simply are not interested because they’re super busy and think they won’t be able to dedicate appropriate time and attention to a relationship. This can be anything from internal tensions to external ones, like someone trying to stop the characters from being together, or there's some big threat to take care off. This is where you think of the reasons why they can't be together right away!

Emotional intimacy! Something I’ve really loved from writing a slow burn is discovering that two characters can be soooo intimate with each other without there being physical intimacy, like, not even placing a hand on their shoulder, or a pinky squeeze. Give your characters little moments of this, make them emotionally vulnerable! This really builds trust between the characters and deepens their connection little by little.

Give sprinkles of what their future might look like! I’m very guilty of this, especially with the last few chapters of NC. I love teasing my readers with small glimpses of their future (lowkey also a way to tranquilize my need to make them be together already😭)! It adds to the suspense and keeps readers intrigued!

Let the story unfold on its own! I've mentioned this many, many times but NC was originally only going to be 3 to 5 parts, but then with the third part, the story was kind of like, "actually, there's more to tell here" and I decided to explore what that "more" was. So now we're here, and I'm satisfied with how the story has unfolded on its own. Accepting this actually helped with the slow burn a lot! So, don't be afraid to see where your fic takes you!

How to Start A Fic

As to how to start a fic - something that helped me was think about where the characters start and where I want them to end. What is the premise of the fanfic, as in what direction is it going? What are you trying to achieve? What needs to happen in order for your characters to reach all their goals? What internal or external issues do they have to face or resolve first?

I also want to add, which I’ve mentioned already in another ask, to use some sort of planning tool, like an outline! This helps keep your thoughts and goals organized!

And to end, just write, my friend! Everyone who writes started out somewhere and I think most of us weren’t immediately great at it. Tbh, even with some experience some of us still struggle at the beginning of a new fanfic because it might be a new fandom, a new trope we’ve never tried, or we’re applying a different tone and mood we’re not used to, but let me reassure, once you start and figure out where you want to take your story and you begin to feel more comfortable with writing, your writing will begin to feel less stiff and you’ll find your voice.

Also, just because it feels like that to you, doesn’t mean it’ll feel like that to your readers!

I felt like that when I first started writing for ATSV and still feel like that about some of my writing when I look back at it. The other day I went back to a post to make layout changes and let me tell you, I still feel like it was stiff, but a lot of readers enjoyed the writing! So, what I’m trying to say is, sometimes it’s just us perceiving our writing like that but it’s not actually like that!!

I hope this was somewhat helpful and that it’s not just me yapping and yapping lol!

S2 is actually my least favorite Season. What’s weird is I didn’t mind the love square in that one, like the scenes at the Roller Rink. To me, it showed why Sam and Robby as well as Miguel and Tory wouldn’t be able to last as a long term couple. But also why Miguel and Sam could. So, the love square stuff worked for me in S2. Plus, the School Fight is probably the best fight scene in the series so far. The things that ruined S2 for me were Kreese (mostly Johnny being foolish enough to trust him) and Stingray (who, to me, was a pointless character who took up too much screen time that should’ve been given to Tory, Aisha, or Demetri to further their arcs).

But I actually love S3 and S1. Every time I rewatch them, I find very few things to complain about. S1 is almost perfect. S3 is setup, like you said. But it’s done in pretty good way (to me, it was the execution of what followed that somewhat ruined it). I mean, the final two episodes of S3 in general are in my top 5 CK episodes. I mean, the way S3’s final scene plays out with the majority of friends who were separated/estranged from each other reuniting (along with Daniel and Johnny) was epic. The back half of S4 (in my opinion) just undoes all that in some of the worst ways possible.

I’m glad you could find some enjoyment in S2’s love square, but see, that exact reason is why it was so frustrating to me. Like…there was really no need to pair everyone off except for drama reasons, and then they threw in every iteration of misunderstanding and cheating, and they keep bringing it up!

And yeah, I do like the school fight, but it didn’t have to be triggered by love square drama. Hawk was furious at Demetri, he could’ve done it. And Tory starting that fight completely flies in the face of her whole “I have to stay out of trouble so I can take care of my mom and make sure I can retain custody of my brother” thing (then again, so does literally everything she does in s3 and the assault on Hawk in s4 💀)

I love s1 dearly, and I don’t mind s3 honestly. Stuff was happening, I’ll grant it that, there were stakes and some face-offs…but it really felt like a whole season talking about a tournament that should’ve been in 3x10 but wasn’t. Idk. It felt incomplete. (3x10 is still my favorite finale though, ironically 😂)

Ooh well I’ve talked so much about this one (see “oc: morgan wells” and “morgan wells au”) 😂 but I have some updates since then! I’m currently working on the 2x11 oneshot, and making headway on some of the s1 stuff, so that’s exciting! Jesse and Morgan are officially going to be at odds now, since they have to be before Jesse is rescued…and Jesse, in her anger at Morgan, may have figured out a way to (temporarily) block off their link 👀 (this is gonna be important for when they’re on the same Earth and need to do it to avoid debilitating migraines. Jesse and Morgan vibrate at different frequencies, so their link isn’t stable/compatible unless they’re on their own Earths)

Oh also, Barry and Morgan may become stepsiblings in the future 👀 that’ll be fun! Especially with the Savitar arc incoming (the stepsibling thing will happen after that, but since my reimagining of Savitar is Future Barry, he already knows that this will happen)

This is the WIP that’s been in my folder for a year now 😂 I’ve talked about it here, but basically, Iris takes a calmer approach to Barry in 5x18, empathizing with him and validating his feelings but also reminding him that Thawne is manipulative and Nora probably doesn’t know everything. Which…I hope is what she was trying to say in canon, instead of “maybe he’s not that bad” and dismissing Barry’s trauma along with her own for nothing more than cheap drama 💀

It also uses this post to attempt to explain some of Iris’s reasoning for dampening Nora’s powers. Grief is one reason, but…it occurs to me that metas being illegal could be another. Because…where is Team Flash? Where are their meta allies? Their biggest threat in the future is still Cicada, someone who steals metas’ powers…a villain like that would have an easy time finding a foothold in the wake of anti-meta laws, wouldn’t they?

(Also Nora is 18, as she will always be when I write about her, because I reject her being in her late 20s)

Iris opens her mouth to argue in Nora’s defense…but then reason sinks in. Nora’s a teenage girl, newly independent, and already on strained terms with her mother. There’s a very real possibility that she doesn’t know everything about her mother’s decision—or at least, that she doesn’t understand it. God knows I was never the most perceptive at 18.

the CK time travel AU!! If you’ve read the series, you know the gist: Sam, Tory, and Aisha stuck in the past after being transported from 2x4. So far, we’ve had them winning Daniel and his mom’s trust, antagonizing the Cobras, befriending Ali (Sam did, at least), saving Dali’s relationship from briefly exploding by forcing the explanation conversation to happen earlier, and Sam winning the AVT.

In the next installment…well, it’ll have an enemies to friends arc for Sam and Johnny, who are undoubtedly one of the cornerstone relationships of this series, Samguel will be hinted at more than a few times, the trio + Daniel will befriend the Cobras…and Sam will meet some familiar faces in the past!

Sam sighed, hopping around on her left foot as she slipped on jeans and a shirt. She’d gone shopping with Ali, Susan, and Barbara a few days before the tournament, but she’d only had a little pocket change from her own time, so she’d had to rely on the girls buying stuff for her.

It had felt a lot like charity, and it stung. Especially since she vaguely remembered that exact discomfort mirrored on Miguel’s face a few times, in the short time they’d dated.

Amelia Parker AU

Ooh well basically, Amelia (fc Millie Bobby Brown) is Peter’s 4-5-years-younger little sister who doesn’t get Blipped. She gets put into foster care and bounces between a few families before finding a home that she grows to love.

She’s friends with Gwen Stacy (fc Lana Condor) in her childhood, who moves away during the Blip after one of her parents gets Blipped. However, she comes back for college!

She is close friends with Norman Osborn (fc Xolo Maridueña), they meet in high school. Norman’s twin brother, Harry, was Blipped (possibly his mom too, I haven’t decided), so now his dad’s pressuring him to take up business as a career, which Harry has been primed to do, which Norman had not until now. Norman and Amelia bond, and presumably become something more eventually 👀

There’s going to be some Tension between Amelia and Peter in NWH, because Amelia finds out about Peter being Spidey…not from Peter himself, but from Mysterio’s video. Understandably, she’s hurt by it. Peter, meanwhile, still sees her as his baby sister, instead of who she is now, which is a few months older than him. It’s a trip 😂

“Uh-huh.” Her brother, as usual, couldn’t keep a single thing from her. “Well, May says you must like MJ, because she’s over all the time, and sometimes you get flustered when you talk to her, and your cheeks go all red—yeah, like that!” She pointed at him with a grin, as his blush grew by the second.

“It-it’s not—she’s really—stop laughing!” Peter protested, but Amelia’s laughter persisted in earnest.
