dfYALLLAKSJD;FLAKJSD;LKFJA;SLDKJF;AKLSDDJ I CANOOT WITH EVIDENT SUFFICIENCY ARTICULATE THE STRAIGHT UP GLEE ON MY FACE READING THIS ENTIRE FUCKINGSLKFJ THING like it's really one of those fics that ticks so many boxes, all I kept thinking was:
She's got humor, she's got flawless, inspired, indistinguishable-from-canon characterization, she's got a crossover for the ages that I may or may not have thought about to teh point of giving myself a migraine, she's got answers for what-if-things-went-a-different-way questions for days. She's perfect, she's beautiful, she's Linda Evangelista. And I knew it from the moment I'd lain eye on her bc she starts like this: There's something to be said about feeling out of one's league when you're comparing yourself to the guy who's got like ten years on you.
BECAUSE YOU KNEW I'M A FUCKING HOPELESS SUCKER FOR THOSE COLD OPEN VOICEOVER TYPELINES OKAY, YOU JUST KNEW IT. YOU KNEW IT AND YOU MARKED IT ON YOUR CALENDAR AND YOU WERE LIKE THIS IS THE DAY WE'RE GONNA STRIKE. THIS IS THE DAY WE'RE GONNA SLAP KAY IN THE FACE WITH A CRICKET PADDLE NBD
Also, can we talk about the fact that Javi was so metnally on the defensive here? like I love that Walt actually for once in his life kinda had the upper hand the entire time???? Idk exaclty why. Maybe bc it plays against type, or what's established in canon which is essentially that Walt, god bless him ...... cannot be fuckin' helped SKSKS and now that I think about it, I guess Javi can't be helped but in a different way. And ultimately, his decision to not go to Mexico at the end of OG marks a pretty big departure from Walt at the end of Nmx, who's still v much addicted to The Game. So, to see a Drop That Flip It And Reverse It with these two was a sheer fucking delight, telojuro
Before we get to the most unexpected but not ooc turn for a character that I might've seen ever in a Narcos fic SPOILER ALERT YOU GUYSSLKDFJA;LSJF;LASKJDF ;LJK WALT TAKES UPSKDFLSKDJ FUCKING RUNNINGSDKFJKSJD 🏃♂️🏃♂️ and it's so healthy and such sincere attempt at being well-adjusted of him that I want it. I want it desperately you guysskfdjdslkfj we get this unfathomably correct description of Walt by Javi: And so far, the guy's an enigma. He's got a subtle way of making people feel inferior ... Not in a spiteful kind of way, but Javi can tell he's probably pissed off a lot of people across the border with his aloof attitude and superiority complex. He's found that working with Mexican law enforcement, the ethnocentrism steaming off American officials pisses them off more than the actual cartels sometimes.
OKAY JESSSSSUSUS CHRIST I could devote like a 3hr long video essay treatise dissecting this thing but I will refrain sksks I just have to admire the like spot on description of Walt in a way that's like .... it reminds me of the end of S1 when he's finally revealed as the narrator, before the Leyenda shitshow, and we're sort of like "wait, tf is this asshole[affectionate]?" Like he is very much cloaked in an air of intrigue pre-S2 and I almost forgot about that entirely until reading this. Also, the whole American ethnocentrism thing is really interesting bc I do think that's a pretty significant diffs between the Mexican cops and Colombian cops. Like Colombian cops bristled against American exceptionalism but they didn't resent it more than they hated Pablo Escobar. Mexican cops on the other hand? They straight up wouldn't lift a finger for you, no matter what war Miguel or whoever tf be ragin' in the streets SKSKSK there's a more palpable middle finger to the US from Mx, but idk maybe that's just me ksjks
Alright I'll shut up about all that now and finally we can discuss it: the fucking. running. He gets up to five miles and Javi feels like he could die before he's two miles in. What's worse is that Walt is just talking as usual spewing off random pieces of advice and sharing new developments about the rising beef between the Sinaloa and Tijuana cartels. Javi can't get anything but grunts and squawks out as he voices acknowledgement that he's listening.
SLKDJFLKSJDFLKSJ WHEN I TELL YOU I WAS FUCKING SUFFOCATING LAUGHING AT THIS ENTIREASDKFJA;SJ WALT AND JAVI ON MORNING JOGS TOGETHER MAYHAPS TRYING TO OUTSPRINT THOSE TWO PACK A DAY SMOKING HABITS LEST THE WORKAHOLISM DOESN'T COME FOR THEM FIRST WITH A HEART ATTACK FLSJKDKFLJ like if you've ever met anyone who's Super Into Running like in the highly specific way I imagine Walt is Into Running, I have met those ppl and straight tf up - 95 to 1, odds are they're also raging workaholicsksks like I don't make the rules but someone did and they said these two things go together like PBJ. And Javi reaches his breaking point at like the most relatable of places: It's only when the discussion veers from work to the potential idea of their workouts becoming a regular occurrence that Peña finally snaps. "How do you do this shit for fun?!" I mean... Peña has never been and never will be more right than he is right here.
But just when I'm thinking this is all fun and games, you Drop That Flip It And Reverse It once again MAKING THIS SHIT ALL POETIC AND MEANINGFULFSLKDFJ;ALKJSDF;LAJ BC THERE'S A FUCKING REASON FOR THE RUNNING AND OFC THERE IS AND IT'S GENIUS AND SO CORRECT AND MAKES ALL THE SENSE AND BROUGHT ME TO MY KNEES WITH HOW MUCH I DIDN'T SEE SOMETHING SO RIGHT COMING AT ME
"This job's gonna suck the shit out of you. Better to have running as an outlet or shit something else." ... This crusade might be the death of him. Before he goes down, he wants to make sure the game doesn't take others down too. "There's another way, Javi," he says on another run. "There's always gonna be another way, a better way to win."
OH FUCK OFFFFFFFFFFFFF WITH THAT THERE'S ANOTHER WAYYYYYYYSF;KLJAS;DLKFJA;LSDKFJ;AOSIJF[QIWEJ[RIJ BC HOW MANY TIMES HAVE WE ALL THOUGHT THAT WATCHNG WALT IN THAT FUCKINSKSJDF RAT RACE, SEEMINGLY INCAPABLE OF EXTRACTING HIMSELF FROM THE SAME DYSFUNCTIONAL PATTERNS AND PERSONAL NARRATIVES, ONLY TO ASK OURSELVES, "DOES THIS MAN HAVE NO SENSE OF SELF PRESERVATION???????" AND YOU KNOW WTF YOU DID??????????? ON THIS DAY YOU SAID "WHAT IF!!! WHAT IF WALT DARED TO HAVE A MODICUM, A SHRED OF SELF AWARENESS!!!!! AND IM'SD;LIFJAWOEIJR IT'S JUST— IT'S INCONCEIVABLE— *sobs*
How Do You Do This Shit For Fun?
Day 2 of Narcoctober - Create a crossover for the OG Narcos show and NMX, featuring at least one character from each.
Characters: Javier Peña x Walt Breslin (DEA besties)
CW: language, discussion of drugs
WC: ~1k
A/N: Another day of Narcoctober down! Played a little fast and loose with canon and events bc there's no rules to this fandom shit. If you see any spelling/grammar errors, no you didn't. Enjoy some humor and a twinge of angst.
There’s something to be said about feeling out of one’s league when you’re comparing yourself to the guy who’s got like ten years on you.
Javi meets Walt a few months after his training period since becoming a DEA agent. He’s working out of El Paso, not on one given assignment, but working on multiple cases in the efforts to prove himself. He’s skirted by without much hazing or abuse as the new kid on the block, but he still draws the short straw and assigned the paper trail-intensive type of cases. It’s nothing you can seek your teeth into, but he bares it because this is the road to proving himself.
Walt’s able to transition out of his desk job in Sacramento and joins the crew down in El Paso under Kuykendall’s command. He takes a liking to Peña and brings him up under his wing, so to speak.
Javi’s heard the rumors, listened to the rumblings of what happened of the airfield disaster. He’s already been warned to be wary of Breslin for fear of having his own new DEA career in the hairs of being flushed down the toilet. On the other side of the spectrum, he’s heard guys rave about how much they admire the ballsy moves he’s willing to make to smoke traffickers out. Javi pays it all no mind though, wanting to form his own notions of the guy before passing judgment.
And so far, the guy’s an enigma.
He’s got a subtle way of making people feel inferior to his own thoughts and intentions. Not in a spiteful kind of way, but Javi can tell he’s probably pissed off a lot of people across the border with his aloof attitude and superiority complex. He’s found that when working with Mexican law enforcement, the ethnocentrism steaming off of American officials pisses them off more than the actual cartels sometimes. But Walt also seems to care deeply. He puts in the work, willing to go the extra mile. He’s quick to get back up after being kicked down to the ground. He takes the time to show Peña the ropes, genuinely wanting to share gems that’ll help him down the road as he continues on his journey.
They start running together in the mornings, Breslin’s way of making sure Peña stays sharp and non-complacent in his paper trail cases. Running, itself, is a relatively new hobby for Walt, something he wanted to pick up now that he’s serious about quitting smoking.
He gets up to five miles and Javi feels like he could die before he’s two miles in. What’s worse is that Walt is just talking as usual, spewing off random pieces of advice and sharing new developments about the rising beef between the Sinaloa and Tijuana cartels. Javi can’t get anything but grunts and squawks out as he voices acknowledgement that he’s listening as they run along.
Even his fucking jogs in between his sprints are fast as shit, Javi thinks to himself. It may be off hours, but he’s not going to be outdone by this guy. Call it a chip on his shoulder or just a guy thing, but it wasn’t happening even if his lungs felt like hot ass cotton right about now.
His descent to the ground is less than graceful when they take a break in the midpoint of their run. Walt simply sits on the nearby stoop while Javi stumbles and then flails his legs open on the ground. It’s a quiet area in the neighborhood, but he’d just have to get hit by a car if one happened on this silent road because he simply wasn’t moving.
He heaves in heavy breaths of air, fiending for oxygen much like the addicts that kept the cartels rich.
He opens his eyes when he hears movement and the sound of grunts next to him. They widen when he realizes that Breslin is doing fucking sit ups on the sidewalk. Peña curses to himself when he gathers himself up to start right alongside him.
“Gotta work the full body out,” Walt remarks.
This time, Javi makes no effort to hide rolling his eyes, but Walt doesn’t notice because he’s striking up another conversation about Gallardo possibly being the key to getting intel about just how expansive the cartel’s pockets were when it came to influence and corruption. At this point, Javi isn’t even trying to be engaged in the dialogue anymore. He’s just ready for this workout to end and to lay prone on his bed for the rest of the day.
It’s only when the discussion veers from work to the potential idea of their workouts becoming a regular occurrence that Peña finally snaps.
“How do you do this shit for fun?!”
His elbows scrape against the concrete like a vinyl record cutting off suddenly. He tells Breslin “fuck you” in his head when he looks over to see him still doing sit ups with perfect form, no less.
He has the nerve to fucking shrug as his reply to Javi’s question before finishing up and finally standing. He gives him a hand to help him rise along with him, which the younger DEA agent takes. “Call it a vice,” Walt shrugs again and looks down, almost as if embarrassed, “This job’s gonna suck the shit out of you. Better to have running as an outlet or shit instead of something else.”
Javi rubs at his elbows and watches the way Breslin morphs his face back into neutrality after the grim lacings in his tone just now.
They finish running the rest of their trail and Javi thinks that maybe he’s cracked a piece of the Breslin Rubik’s cube. The one-track mind when it came to tearing down cartels. The failed operations and burnt bridges. The occasional whiff of alcohol he emanated at random times throughout the work day.
This crusade might be the death of him.
Before he goes down, he wants to make sure the game doesn’t take others down too.
“There’s another way, Javi,” he says on another run, “There’s always gonna be another way, a better way to win.”
A/N: This was originally just gonna be a funny little fic but somewhere along the way, it became a mini character study as well? Sawry bout it. Click here if you wanna be added to my taglist. Taglist: @asirensrage @narcosfandomdiscord
#screamblog#narcoctober#so like.....#are we gonna at sequel maybe where Walt tells Javi#about this super cool and novel thing that no one's ever heard of#called therapy .......#or is that too much wishful thinking on my part#would that be too ooc#para estes pinshe pobrecititos desesperados#god but i love an AU where a character very set in their ways makes a different decision like this#like the feeling of joy at seeing Walt grow a little bit more than he's able to/allowed to do in the show is just :lebron_tear:

Songs About Me: Chapter Six
Yay! Thanks for your patience while I was away! Without further ado, the first (official) date!
READ ON AO3
Louisburg Square, Beacon Hill, Boston
“How’d you do that?” Claire was fumbling with her keys, trying to get the lock to work on her black front door while Jamie waited just below on the sidewalk.
“Do what?”
“How did you get here so fast? Because one minute, you said you were leaving your place and the next, you were on my front porch. The way I see it is you’re either Superman or you’re a stalker.”
He chuckled. “Just another twist of fate for us, lass.” Claire turned to face him. He stood for a moment watching her and if it had been any longer, she might’ve started to feel self-conscious from his gaze. He shook his head and looked up at her through long, red lashes. His hand stretched upward and outward toward her, and her soft smile made his heart soar. Claire took a deep breath, took his large hand in hers, and descended the brick stairs toward the night’s adventure.
There were only three things Jamie confirmed with Claire before their date that night: her address, what time he should pick her up, and if she liked Italian food. Claire was never one to turn down a bowl of noodles and, with a glance up at her rather large walking partner, ventured Jamie was never one to say no to carbs. He had declined to tell her exactly where they were to have dinner that night over text, and Claire’s curiosity was kicking in as they strolled through Boston Commons.
‘Ye said ye enjoyed Italian food, so just trust me that ye’ll like where we’re headed.”
“That’s hardly an answer.”
“It’s a good enough answer. Patience isn’t really a virtue of yer’s, is it?”
The pair continued to walk down through the Commons, wandering along pathways and strolling past monuments. Their conversation flowed easily and Claire found herself wondering how she could have only met this man, this kind and funny and compassionate and loving and enthralling man, mere hours before. Claire had grabbed a cashmere wrap before she ran down the stairs in case of chilly fall weather, and was glad for it. She started out her walk with Jamie by holding her wrap around her upper arms, secured by her hands held at her chest. As their walk continued, she caught herself letting go to touch Jamie’s arm, to lead him around a pond by the hand, to swat at him when he made a joke. She was comfortable. Their banter and laughter and talks were natural and easy.
“You have to tell me where we’re going! First, you show up at my home with a very thin explanation, and now you’re leading me through the city with no direction! I happen to think my stalker theory is holding more traction with every moment, Mr. Fraser.”
“Alright, a few things, Sassenach,” he said. Their arms were linked together as they made their way over the intersection of Charles and Beacon streets. “First off, my explanation was solid. It was fate I got to yer place so quickly.” He ushered her across the busy street and onto a smaller side street lined with trees and old facades. “Second, I’m no’ a stalker. If I was, I would have found as soon I could have after last night. Yer all I thought about today. Had I known how to find ye, I would have,” he said. He moved his hand to her lower back as he moved them down the sidewalk. Claire simply smiled down at the ground at his honest admission. “Third,” he slowed their pace, “did ye consider I jes’ wanted to spend a little extra time with ye?” He paused to open the door to the restaurant. A whisper brushed along her ear as she slid past him in the entrance, bushing against his chest. “The time I get doesna seem to be enough.” She turned to face him then. He only smiled softly, urging her forward through the doors.
Jamie pulled out a worn leather chair for her before seating himself across the small square table draped with a crisp white tablecloth and topped with two brass candlestick holders and a myriad of glassware. Claire smirked at the fanciness of it all -- they’d met in a dark bar in the middle of the night and talked over dusty bookshelves and now, she was pretending she belonged in a place like this. When Jamie had asked if she liked Italian, she figured they’d end up at a mom and pop place eating spaghetti and drinking too much wine, not acting on their best behavior at one of the finest restaurants in Beacon Hill.
“Are ye alright, Claire?”
Her head popped up to find Jamie studying her. His head cocked like a puppy who watches something new with a mix of awe and confusion in his eyes. He leaned forward as if to reach for her hand, and drew back.
“Oh, yeah, I’m fine. Sorry about that, I must’ve zoned out a bit there,” she fibbed. She fidgeted with her napkin on her lap, folding and unfolding it.
“Ye know, I--” Jamie was interrupted by the waiter. He sighed and requested two bottles of wine, a red and a white, and two whiskeys. Claire stifled a giggle at the waiter’s outfit while Jamie was acting the role of adult: the teen wore clean black slacks, a pressed white shirt, a black vest, and a white cloth on his forearm completed the look. The waiter looked at her with confusion.
“Sorry, just thinking about something that happened earlier,” she muttered. The waiter walked away, with a parting glance at Jamie.
“Care tae share what’s so funny, lass?” She expected a look of disdain. The same look Frank would’ve given her, she realized, if she acted this way at a dinner with him. There was never to be any fun, never any giggles, never any banter. She straightened in her chair and attempted to put her feelings about the absurdity of the night behind her.
“Oh, it’s nothing!” Quickly shifting the subject, she moved on. “Did I hear you order four separate alcohol drinks?”
“I wasna sure what ye liked, besides the whisky, so I thought I’d get one of everything to be safe.” It was Jamie’s turn to shift in his seat now. “Shit,” he muttered. “I forgot to ask for ice water.” Motioning back toward the waiter’s station he stopped to add, “Wait, did ye even want ice water? Mebbe ice tea? A coffee? I should’ve asked what ye wanted instead of assuming, Claire, and I’m sorry for it…”
“Jamie. It’s fine.” It was Claire’s turn to reach across the table and take his hand. His eyes moved from the waiter across the room instantly down to their hands. He marveled in the way her fingers intertwined with his, how she traced the bones and knuckles, drawing maps to nowhere in particular. He thumbed over the soft skin of her palms and looked up at her through long lashes. “Can I ask you a question?”
“Ye can ask me anything ye want,” he answered quickly.
“What are we doing here?”
That got his attention. His gaze hardened, his spine stiffened. “What do ye mean?” She didn’t immediately answer, so he continued on. “I asked ye here tonight, because I couldn’t stop thinking about ye all night. And then today, to see ye, to be healed by ye… Christ, I couldn’t wait to see ye or talk to ye or to hold yer hand or merely to be near ye again. If ye’d rather not see me after tonight, I understand and I respect yer wishes. If that’s the case though, I think I’d rather ye let me know that now instead of having me sit here knowing I can’t have ye. I have enough alcohol to get me through the night, I think…” A giggle erupted from the opposite side of the small square table.
“You certainly do have enough alcohol, but I’d rather like to enjoy it with you, if you don’t mind.” One hand held his, and the other held her chin in her palm, elbow propped up on the table.
“Ye’d let me see ye again?”
“Without a doubt.”
Tension flowed out of his muscles and his eyes shimmered in the candlelight. “Why’d ye ask what we were doing here then?”
“I just mean that you don’t have to go through so much trouble for us to spend time together. I know we just met but I’d wager that fancy restaurants with wine lists bigger than the menu aren’t your usual hangout. I’m a simple woman who enjoys simple pleasures, Jamie. Please don’t make this anything more than the perfect night it could be if you just relax.”
He studied her. The curls flowing down around her face, curling at her collarbones. The eyes the same color of his favorite whisky sitting in the crystal decanter on the sideboard back home. Her delicate features that reminded him of the stories of the faeries from back home. She wiggled in her seat under his gaze. He sighed. “I just wanted to honor ye, Sassenach. Do ye right,” she smirked at that. “Och, ye know what I mean,” he said and playfully squeezed her hand in his. “I wanted to treat ye the way I think ye should be treated.”
Would he ever cease to stop being so honest and vulnerable? She hoped not. This confession, his honest assessment of her, made her eyes shimmer with a thin line of unshed tears.
“Did I say something wrong? I’m sorry if I overstepped…”
“You didn’t.” She looked up from her hand in his and marveled at the way she cared for him already, so soon. “Just… thank you, Jamie.”
The waiter reappeared to take their dinner orders and the two were left to talk under their meals arrived. He talked about his favorite book, Song of Myself by Walt Whitman (“Failing to fetch me at first, keep encouraged. Missing me one place, search another. I stop somewhere waiting for you.” he brought her knuckles to her lips. She shivered. He blushed.) ; she told him about the tropical plant she’d grown from a start for the last five years, the pride and joy radiating from her words and beaming smile (“I couldna ever grow something that took that much work,” “It just takes the right touch,” “Aye, that ye have.”) . The waiter arrived back at their table with plates and bowls galore. Soon, the small tabletop was brimming with large flat bowls of pasta and salad plates layered with leafy greens; all four glasses in front of Claire were full, wine and whisky and water warming her core.
Claire didn’t immediately reach for her food, and Jamie smirked. “Tell me what yer thinkin’ about, right now. Don’t think, just answer!”
“I’m thinking that I don’t know which of these fancy forks to kill myself with.” Silence, then roarous laughter.
“I’m no’ sure what I expected ye to say, but for what it’s worth, I did consider the same the question. This is a hell of a spread!”
Vaguely, Claire thought she should eat a little more food and drink a little less liquids, but the notion rolled passed her with another twirl of whisky in her mouth. Dinner continued to pass with much less fanfare and much more excitement and laughter and banter and all the things Claire thought a date should be. It wasn’t until she went to take another sip of her whisky that she noticed it was entirely empty. About to call for another, Jamie shushed her and brought a finger to his lips to stay quiet. She giggled, then remembering to stay quiet, brought her hands up to cover her mouth. Jamie looked around them conspiratorily and pulled a hip flask from his pocket. He poured a generous amount of what she presumed to be whisky back into her glass, and topped off his own. They continued this way, with mouthfuls of noodles and laugher and soft touches that grew more bold with each sip.
“You know, the drunker you get, the more obvious you’re becoming with your thermos.” The waiter was standing before them, hands on his hips.
“ Thermose? Thermasse? I'm sorry, I don't understand. What's a thermousse?” Jamie was trying his best to put on a serious front, but Claire’s giggles made his mouth spread from a smirk all the way to an honest to God grin.
“That one. Right there in your hand.”
“Oh, the thermas-eh?” Jamie patted the spot where the now-empty flask sat in his pocket. “For yer information, it’s a hipflask and it’s actually quite stylish.”
“Sir, I can’t have you in here, drinking liquor you bought from home.”
“Och well if yer selection wasna grossly overpriced, that wouldna be an issue. But alas, I suppose it’s time for me to take my most lovely date and be on our way. To the next adventure!” The waiter looked as if he wanted to throw Jamie out of the restaurant himself but since they were apparently ready to be off into the night, he asked for his payment politely and returned in record time to usher them out the door. Jamie lent out a hand to Claire and twirled her into his side when she stood, her laughter filling the cozy space.
“Sassenach, they’re all watchin’ us. Let’s get out of here, aye?” He whispered into her hair and he focused on not bumping into tables on their way out. The other patrons watched half in annoyance and half in good-natured smiles cast their way.
“Ayeeeee!” Claire rolled her r’s as best she could and Jamie laughed so hard she could feel his chest reverberate against her back as she led him outside.
Back in the park, Claire led him down brick paths and through lines of tall trees, and he followed her every move. She knew they were only minutes from her townhouse but reveled in the magic of the gardens at night alone with him. With Jamie.
“I wrote it for you, you know,” she said quietly as she walked along the low brick wall lining the gardens. Jamie, down on the sidewalk, looked up confused.
“Ye wrote what, lass?”
“The french song you heard today. I wrote that, last night. I couldn’t sleep.”
Jamie stopped walking. When he turned to face Claire head-on, she came up a few inches above his head from standing on the low wall but felt incredibly small under his gaze. She fumbled with her dress and tried to take a step forward along the wall, but two strong hands held in place by the waist.”
“Will ye tell me what ye wrote? What the words mean?”
“I thought you said you spoke french.”
“Aye, I did. But I was so entranced by ye when I saw ye in the shop, so surprised, that I forgot to actually listen and translate,” he smirked. “Please tell me?”
She watched him for a moment. Not yet. It’s too soon for that. She leaned in close, close enough to smell his cologne and see peak of ruddy stubble on his cheeks. He closed his eyes and his mouth fell open just a bit, and she whispered, “Not a chance.”
She jumped down from the wall past his grasp, strolling back down the brick path. Jamie stood stunned, shook his head, brushed back a few rogue curls, and jogged to catch up with her pace.
---
They arrived back at Louisburg Square not more than ten minutes later. The night was getting late. Claire fidgeted with the hem of her dress, Jamie kept shrugging his shoulders in the black leather jacket, and they walked slower with each step. When it couldn’t be delayed any longer, they arrived at the brick steps to Claire’s porch.
“So, this is me.” She turns to face him, to prolong this moment, this night.
He smirked. “Aye, Sassenach. I remember.”
“Why do you call me that?” He cocked his head at her. “A sassenach, I mean.”
“Och, I mean no offense by it and can stop if ye’d like. It just means outlander, someone not from here.”
“Here? It seems that here is Boston, and you’re not from here either!” She crossed her arms in mock admonishment.
“That mebbe so, but I can’t help that being with you makes me feel like home,” he said as he took a step toward her. Her arms fell to her sides then, and Jamie reached for them in his.
“Was that jus’ the most foolish thing to say? Shit, I jus’ keep making a right fool of myself around ye it seems. First the voicemails and now…”
“I understand… exactly, how you feel.” She couldn’t look at him. It should be too soon to feel this way. He was a practically a stranger, and yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling something was different. As if he could read her mind, he replied with questions of his own.
“Is it usual? What it is between us?” He watched her with such intensity, such revere, such awe. She met his eyes, and softened.
“It’s often something like this, I think.” He nodded in agreement. “But no. This isn’t usual. It’s different.” He nodded again, seeming to memorize the pattern of the bricks on the sidewalk under their feet. “I guess that’s my queue… Thank you for a truly wonderful night, Jamie,” she dropped his hands and began to walk up the steps to her door when a strong arm pulled her back into a familiar warm embrace.
“Claire, I--” he swallowed and took a step back from her. She noticed that in the distance he created, his hand still held onto her waist. His fingertips pressed into her flesh and goosebumps erupted under the fabric. She met his eyes and sank into their ocean depths.
“I’d very much like to kiss ye. May I?”

It's HAPPENING!!! These sweet babies went on their first date! I figured based on what we know about them, they're both too down to earth for some fancy restaurant acting formal. The flask/thermos scene is based on Jess and Nick's date in New Girl where they get absolutely trashed in a very similar situation. Plus, it just seems like Jamie would be the kind of guy to have a flask on him, right? How are we feeling about these two? About the date? I'm so excited to get to the angsty part of this! I promise it's coming up soon. (Like, next chapter, soon). Thanks for being so patient with me while I was away enjoying post-deployment bliss with my husband! Writing wasn't on the top of my list, but it's good to be back! As always, thanks for reading. Your comments and kudos here and interactions on Tumblr really do mean so much to me and I really appreciate your support for this story and for me. Stay safe and healthy out there! <3

Family Parent one: marcus pierce -- drug store manager Relationship with them: kody and his dad are best buds! if it weren’t for his fathers love for rollercoasters, kody doesn’t know what his life would be like today. they used to play rollercoaster tycoon growing up and kody still cherishes those memories today. Parent two: tina pierce -- bridgemead city manager Relationship with them: kody and his mother have a very loving relationship. however, kody’s adoration for his mother dwindled when it was her job that forced them to move to bridgemead. he thinks of it as her fault that he doesn’t get to go to disneyworld anymore, and there’s a bitter part of him that thinks that if she hadn’t made them leave, he never would’ve become a vampire. he knows its wrong to attribute her to his curse, but sometimes when he’s really sad he cant help it. Siblings: none Other important family members: his widowed aunt shirley who lives twenty minutes from disneyworld and occasionally would join them on their weekend visits to the parks. he misses her greatly 😩😩

Plays a sport?: nope, but would be great at track now that he’s a vampire! How he would spend a rainy day: playing kingdom hearts II in his pajamas. Spending habits: great at hoarding all of his allowance! since he’s not spending it on food, he’s an excellent saver. pre-vampirism kody was not as cautious with his spending. Smoking/drinking/drugs?: no way 🙅🏼 has yet to even try alcohol Extremely skilled at: cheering up his friends! finding the good in others and convincing them to see it too 🤗 Extremely unskilled at: stopping himself from crying when he’s sad / when he’s in the middle of crying. putting together pieces of their investigations. sure, he can find things -- but what the hell is he supposed to do with them once he’s got it?!?! Nervous tics: anxious picking at his cuticles. messing with his hair. aggressive foot tapping. scrolling through his phone without actually looking at anything. Usual body posture: that boy has been working on rollercoaster code on his computer for YEARS. his body posture is absolutely RUINED! Mannerisms: constantly talking with his hands. bouncin’ around like tigger when something exciting happens. abbreviating things that don’t need to be abbreviated. the loudest in the room at all times.
Traits Optimist or pessimist? Introvert or extrovert? Daredevil or cautious? Logical or emotional? Leader or follower? Disorderly and messy or methodical and neat? Prefers working or relaxing? Confident or unsure of himself/herself? Animal lover? HELL YEAH.
Self-perception How do they feels about themselves?: before the year 2020, kody actually quite liked himself! he realized that he was goofy and sometimes not everyones cup of tea, but for the most part, he knew he was a good guy who was a little obnoxious! now, he has mixed feelings about himself. vampirism has elevated a lot of his emotions and more often than not now, he dislikes himself for what he’s become, or what he could become if things turn bloody. One word the character would use to describe themselves: spunky What does the character consider their best trait?: his compassion What does the character consider their worst trait?: his gullibility What does the character consider their best physical characteristic?: his fluffy hair !! What does the character consider their worst physical characteristic?: that he’s a short king. stream short kings anthem by tiny meat gang How does the character think others perceive them?: he’s pretty sure most people think that he’s wildly annoying, but that doesn’t stop him from being fully himself most of the time! What would the character most like to change about himself/herself: his vampirism!! get this shit out of him just make him a normal aging boy again!!
Relationships with others Opinion of other people in general: kody is a big ole’ ball of love, and thus so, he tries to share that with everyone. strangers are treated with compassion, acquaintances are treated as old friends, and friends are treated like family. unless kody already knows someone to be a bad person, or is wary of them, he’s genuinely one of the nicest people one could ever meet. Opinion of the Scooby Gang: talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, show stopping, spectacular, never the same, totally unique, completely not ever been done before, unafraid to reference or not reference, put it in a blender, shit on it, vomit on it, eat it, give birth to it. Does the character hide their true opinions and emotions from others?: it depends on the topic, but for the most part, yes. when it comes to most scooby gang related endeavors, kody will share his thoughts -- if it’s something related to movies or tv, he’ll be talking your ear off for hours. if it’s something that could result in it hurting someone else, he’ll be quiet, and if his vampirism was ever to come into question, he’d be absolutely be suppressing it. Most important person in character’s life: oh god, not to pick scooby gang favorites, but probably aj. she’s the closest thing he has to a sister, and he doesn’t know what he would do without their banter, and her support. Best friend/s: aj darke, dylan frye, & arabella byrne Dating experience: absolutely none. kissed 2 girls in the span of 2 years over 3 years ago. Romancing: kody wouldn’t know the first thing about trying to get someone to date him. all he knows is the stuff he’s seen on tv, watched in movies, or experienced around him ( such as his parents successful marriage, or his friends dating people ), but if it were to come down to him, he’d be extremely awkward. picture tom holland’s spiderman trying to talk to zendaya’s mj in far from home -- because that’s extremely accurate. kody isn’t trying to date anyone right now for a couple of reasons: one being that he’s too nervous, and not exactly looking for love, but if it were to happen... he wouldn’t run from it necessarily. but two being that his vampirism creates a bit of a problem for him, and he’s not sure if he should subject anyone to the curse he’s stuck with.
Extra Physicality: if necessary, could probably lift a car and throw it down the street. as of right now, doesn’t know how strong he really is / is more concerned about hurting his friends with this supposed strength than he is finding out how many hundreds of pounds he could lift. kody in a fight? probably losing within the first five seconds, unless bloods drawn and the instinct to pounce takes over. Species: vampire How do they feel about it?: hates it. would do anything to reverse it. wishes he had just stayed a little longer at karma cafe that night. or had never gone at all. How do they look in their supernatural form?: pretty much the same, however when he’s hungry and near blood, his eyes go all dark and bloodshot, and the veins around his eyes start to pulse ( basically just like vampire diaries ), but kody is unaware of this since he’s never seen it happen to himself or another vampire

Disney’s Peter Pan (1953)
Summary/Overview:
I’ve been considering a Hook-themed review blog for some time now, and what better way to start off than with the classic 1953 Disney film? Originally slated to be Disney’s second animated film after Snow White, the idea for a production of Peter Pan was in Walt’s mind long before it hit the big screen. Walt himself had played Peter in a school play as a boy and had retained a fondness for the story ever since. The first major film version to feature a boy (Bobby Driscoll) in the titular role, Disney’s Peter Pan has since become perhaps even more widely known than Barrie’s original. That being said, I think it’s probably unnecessary to give much in the way of a summary, but for the sake of developing a consistent format for my reviews, here’s the super quick version:
Wendy Darling, a young girl with an active imagination and a love for storytelling, is distraught when her practical father decides that it is time for her to grow up and move out of the nursery with her brothers. Later that night, after her parents have gone out, Peter Pan—the flying boy hero of Wendy’s stories—shows up at her window and offers to take her and her brothers to Neverland, a magical island with mermaids, “Indians,” and pirates where they will never grow up. Unfortunately the kids get caught up in the plans of Captain Hook, who wants revenge on Peter for cutting off his hand and feeding it to a crocodile. Ultimately, Hook captures the children and nearly kills Peter with a bomb in the guise of a present from Wendy, but Tinkerbell, Peter’s loyal fairy friend, saves him just in the nick of time, allowing Peter to free the children from Hook’s crew and fight the captain in a final duel that results in Hook being chased off into the sunset by the crocodile. Wendy and her brothers return home safely, and Wendy realizes that she isn’t so afraid of growing up anymore...only to have her father admit that maybe holding onto her childhood a little bit longer wouldn’t be such a bad thing after all.
What I Liked:
Those of you who followed me over here from my other Hook blog, not-wholly-unheroic, already know that I am more than slightly biased when it comes to Disney’s Hook. I distinctly remember the first time I saw him on screen when I was twelve. The sequel had just come out on video, and ABC was doing its usual Sunday Disney movie (and advertising) by showing the original Peter Pan one weekend, followed by the sequel the next. I was bored and had never watched the film before, so I decided to give it a shot...and I was instantly struck by how different Hook was from any Disney villain I’d previously encountered. While most of the classic villains are motivated by greed, vanity, or the desire for power, Hook’s feud with Pan is at least somewhat justified considering he not only lost a hand but also faces the constant threat of the crocodile as a result of our supposed hero’s actions. Additionally, prior to Peter Pan, Disney’s major villains (Queen Grimhilde/The Evil Queen, Lady Tremaine, the Queen of Hearts) were typically rather flat and lacking in personality. We see only their wicked side (or in the case of “Man” in Bambi, we don’t see them at all!). Hook is a major departure from this trend in that while he is clearly made out to be the bad guy, we also see him in moments of fear, weakness, and self-doubt. We see him sick and in pain and ready to give up at times. Suddenly, he isn’t just a villain anymore... He’s a person we can empathize with. Walt himself recognized that the audience would “get to liking Hook” would not want him to die as he does in Barrie’s canon, opting instead to have him “going like hell” to get away from the crocodile but ultimately still very much alive at the end of the film.
Aside from Hook himself, I love the dynamic he has with Mr. Smee. While Hook admittedly doesn’t treat Smee well, there is clearly a bond of trust between them. Early on in the film, for instance, Smee prepares to shave Hook with a straight razor. It’s a moment that is ultimately used for comedic effect, but when one considers that Hook has a crew full of literal cutthroats, it says a lot about Smee that Hook feels totally at ease with this man putting a blade to his neck. Smee repeatedly attempts to intervene to save Hook when he doesn’t have to, and Hook unfailingly looks to Smee when he’s afraid for his life or when he needs to send someone out to complete an important mission for him. It’s a villain/sidekick dynamic that borders on friendship, and I think it adds a lot to the film and to Hook’s complexity as a character.
As far as artistic choices go, it is a rather minor thing, but I love that they kept the stage tradition of using the same actor for both Mr. Darling and Captain Hook, giving the film a rather dreamlike feel and subtly reinforcing the enmity Wendy feels toward her father in real life as she faces off against Hook in the Neverland. Speaking of the actor, Hans Conried isn’t just voice for Hook, as many would assume... He IS Hook as much as any live-action actor could be. I love the old hand-drawn animation style and how they used to use the actors as live-action reference models. (You can see some shots of Hans as the reference model vs the final images of Hook in the film here.) If you’ve ever seen a recording of Hans in one of his other roles, you’ll notice he doesn’t just SOUND like Hook...he makes the same facial expressions (particularly in how he speaks with his eyebrows) and hand/arm motions. It’s small details like this that make Hook (and all the characters) more human and show just how much time, effort, and love the animators put into their work.
What I Didn’t Like:
RACISM. With a capital “R.” There’s no sugar-coating it. Unfortunately, Disney’s film falls victim one of the many problematic tropes of the time when it was made and portrays the island’s native characters as highly caricatured, ignorant, and—in the case of Tiger Lily—romantically exotic people. Their signature song, “What Made the Red Man Red” is lyrically painful to modern listeners with any sense of decency, and the villagers’ character design—from their bright red skin to their large noses and often extreme body shapes (very fat or pencil thin)—along with their badly broken English is highly uncomfortable, to say the least. On the other hand, Tiger Lily, the most realistically drawn native character, is shown dancing flirtatiously for Peter and subsequently rubbing noses with him in what is meant to be a sort of native kiss (based on the concept of the “Eskimo kiss” which in and of itself is not a politically correct term).
Aside from the glaringly obvious issue of racism, my only real complaint with the Disney film is the music. While the songs are pretty standard for films of the day, I personally don’t find most of the music particularly memorable or catchy. “You Can Fly” is alright, I suppose, but the next few songs have their issues. “Following the Leader” and “What Made the Red Man Red” both have racist undertones, and Wendy’s lullaby, “Your Mother and Mine” puts the kids to sleep for a reason... It’s sweet but rather boring and drags on for far too long to keep the audience’s attention. Less time on the lullaby and more pirate sea shanties, please!
On the flip side, Hook is arguably the first Disney villain to get his own theme song, which is pretty cool. The original pirate song (which you can find here) is a bit more sedate than “The Elegant Captain Hook” we end up with and focuses more on the joys of pirating in general than why Hook, specifically, is someone the kids should want to work for. Personally, I’m glad they chose the song that they did, though I do wish they’d given Hook more lines as originally planned. (You can find the lyrics to the full version here.)
Would I recommend it?
Despite its flaws, Disney’s Peter Pan has had a major impact on the legacy of Peter Pan and how we view the characters as well as Neverland itself. It has long been a personal favorite of mine and acted as a gateway into the fandom for me. It introduced me to Hook as a likable, sympathetic, and complex villain and I’ll always be grateful for that. I definitely recommend it to anyone entering the fandom, those with a fondness for the nostalgia of classic Disney films, and kids at heart of all ages.
Overall Rating:
As much as I love the film and want to give it a perfect score, I’d be remiss if I didn’t deduct at least a few points for the depiction of the “Indians.” Otherwise a lovely version of the story so... 4/5 stars

@arcadia-trash @keepin-it-crispy @elizabethemerald yeah idk what the point of this fic even is but it’s got some Jlaire in it so ^^;
It was nice to be back in Arcadia, if only temporarily. New Trollmarket, while still much smaller and less intricate that its centuries-old predecessor, was established and thriving around the New Jersey Heartstone, and to celebrate the success of their quest Jim, Claire, and Blinky had gathered together in the newly-running Gyre station to visit the friends and family they’d left behind in California.
The trio were greeted with a plethora of hugs and shouts for joy as they reunited, Toby in particular talking a mile a minute, excitedly raving about everything they’d missed while on their journey and insisting that they had to come along and properly meet Krel tomorrow. Jim, Claire, and Blinky were already more-or-less familiar of the supernatural goings-on of their hometown over the past few months, of course, thanks to the ever-useful invention of cell phones and texting--but it was special to hear about it face-to-face.
These joyful greetings were short-lived, however, as the time was late--they’d decided to travel at night just to make sure Jim and Blinky would be safe from the sun. And so they all soon found themselves saying goodnight and heading their separate ways--Claire with her family, Jim with his mother, and Blinky with Toby, Aarrrgh, and Dictatious--with promises to come together to hang out for real the next morning with a celebratory breakfast.
“We can do it at my house,” Jim offered, tusks protruding from his toothy grin. “Food’s on me.”
“Can’t wait!” called Toby, waving over his shoulder as he and Blinky made their way over towards the Domzalski home.
“See you then,” added Claire, pulling Jim down for a quick kiss on the cheek before heading off to her own street.
Jim smiled and waved back, watching a moment as his girlfriend, best friend, and essentially-adopted-father walked off in different directions before turning back into his own house.
“Mom?” he called, not seeing Barbara in the front room where she’d been just minutes before.
“I’m here,” she responded, walking in with a pile of blankets and a pillow, which she promptly handed to Jim with an apologetic look.
“I’m sorry, sweetie, but I’m afraid you’re gonna have to sleep on the couch...see, with Walt and I somehow getting roped into looking after all the changeling familiars, well, we needed space to put them all and well, with you not here--”
“It’s ok, Mom, I understand,” said Jim, mildly disappointed but not surprised. As much as he’d miss his old room, he couldn’t really fault her reasoning given the circumstances. Besides, a couch would still be way more comfortable than the forest floors and hard stone caves he’d slept on during the exodus to New Jersey.
“Thank you,” said Barbara with a hint of relief. “It’s getting pretty late, you go on and get some sleep. I love you,” she added, moving in to hug her son one more time, which he gladly returned.
“Love you too, Mom. Goodnight.”
Barbara grinned appreciatively as she headed back up the stairs, leaving Jim to set up the pillows and blankets as comfortably as he could on the couch. He drew the blinds (didn’t want to wake up to a burned stone shoulder or something if the sun rose before he woke up, after all), placed the pillows and set the blankets. That doesn’t look too bad, he thought as he examined his handiwork. Satisfied, he went to brush his teeth, change his clothes, and turn out the lights before crawling under the blankets and closing his eyes.
It was decidedly more comfortable than a cold stone cave, and yet...yet...
“Uuugggh. Why can’t I fall asleep?!” Jim growled to himself as he adjusted his position for what felt like the fiftieth time.
It’s not that he wasn’t tired...well, it wasn’t like the Gyre journey had been particularly long or exhausting or anything, but he was the...normal amount of tired, he supposed. The same that he was every night.
Was it maybe his horns getting in the way? ...nah, he’d gotten used to sleeping around those months ago, there’s no reason it should suddenly start bothering him now.
Perhaps it was the strangeness of sleeping on the couch in his own home, now that his childhood room had been taken over by a bunch of babies? Maybe...but somehow he didn’t feel like that was quite the full story.
So what was it?
Groaning, Jim turned over once more and tried again to drift off into sleep.
.oOo.
The sun was shining through the blinds (though not directly enough to cause any harm) when Jim was roused the next morning by a cheerful voice wafting over from the door.
“--morning, Dr. L!”
“Hi, Toby! Come on in...you’re a bit early, I don’t think Jim’s even up yet, let alone making breakfast.”
“That’s ok!” said Toby, bounding into the front room as Jim sat up, rubbing his bleary eyes. He’d managed to get a little sleep that night, but none of it had been restful, and he was left feeling even more tired than he’d been before.
“Hey, dude!” Toby greeted his best friend excitedly. “Aarrrgh and Blinky’ll be coming through the sewers; while you were gone Aarrrgh connected that old hole Draal made in your basement to one in our house. But Nana and I are here now, so---oh man,” he broke off, noticing the bags under Jim’s eyes. “You alright dude? You look awful. Did you sleep ok?”
“I mean, not really,” said Jim, stifling a yawn. “But it’s ok. Happens to everyone, yeah? Let’s go get that breakfast party started,” He sat up and stretched before heading towards the kitchen, hair and scruff a mess and still in his pajamas.
“What do you think we should do, pancakes or waffles?” he called back over his shoulder.
“Oh, I’m totally feeling waffles!” said Toby.
“Waffles it is,” said Jim, gathering ingredients for the batter.
About five minutes later Blinky and Aarrrgh emerged from the basement, plopping down in the front room to chat amiably with Toby, Nana, Barbara, and Strickler (who, Jim noticed, was holding a babbling infant that he recognized as the changeling’s own former familiar).
In another ten, the food was ready.
“Alright, we got fresh waffles for whoever wants ‘em,” the half-troll called from the kitchen. “Along with whipped cream, syrup, and fruit, or for anyone who wants some more trollish toppings, some old sock bits and tin foil,”
“Alriiiiight!” exclaimed Toby, leaping up and helping himself as the adults followed closely behind.
“Can’t tell you how much I’ve missed the smell of your cooking, kiddo,” said Barbara, to which Jim shrugged, smiling.
Just then another knock sounded at the door. Strickler, being the closest, answered it and let the Nuñezes in.
“Sorry we’re a bit late,” apologized Ophelia, “It was a little hard to drag Claire out of bed this morning...she’s usually so good with mornings, but I guess she’s been busy with that quest...”
“Oh, you’re alright; in fact, you’re right on time,” assured Strickler, ushering them in. “The food has just been put out...”
Upon the invitation, Claire made a beeline for Jim, slipping her arm around her boyfriend in a comfortable side-hug.
“You’re looking professional this morning, Chef Jim,” she teased, eyeing his pajamas and messy mane.
“Yeah, sorry about that,” shrugged Jim. “Honestly, I wasn’t even really up until Toby came over...didn’t sleep all that well last night,”
“You too, huh?” asked Claire, and sure enough when Jim glanced down she also had a bleary look in her eyes and while she had at least put on day clothes her hair, bound by its many clips, was slightly disheveled.
You couldn’t sleep either?” he asked, surprised. “Not even in your own bed?”
“Apparently not. It was weird...it was like something wasn’t quite right, for some reason...but anyways,” Claire continued, shaking off the mystery, “Let’s try some of these waffles, they smell amazing!”
.oOo.
Once everyone had eaten, a few began to disperse. Nana Domzalski retreated to her house to check up on her cats; Ophelia and Javier returned to their daily schedule with little Enrique in tow. Stickler went upstairs to feed the familiars and Barbara insisted on washing the dishes (”You made the food for everyone and you did wonderfully, now you sit back and let me clean it up!” she’d told Jim when he offered to help). That left Jim, Claire, Toby, Blinky, and Aarrrgh in the front room while Toby excitedly showed off some of the new magic tricks he and Aarrrgh had perfected to Blinky.
Jim sat on his little couch-corner, the furnishing still covered in the ruffled blankets he’d slept under (or at least, tried to) last night. Claire was leaned into his side, watching Toby’s magic act as she lazily ran her fingers through Jim’s scruff. Jim wasn’t sure he could remember ever feeling so relaxed before. In fact, he felt like he was just about to drift off to--
“Hey, I think that’s what was missing,” said Claire suddenly.
“Huh?”
“Last night, when I had trouble sleeping. That’s what was missing.”
“...what was it?”
Claire snuggled in closer.
“Your heartbeat,” she said simply. “I guess I’d gotten so used to sleeping to it in New Trollmarket and on the journey that suddenly not having it was just...off,”
Jim took a moment to absorb this statement, eyes slowly widening. Oh. Oh.
“Ooohhhh,” he said out loud. “...man, that makes so much sense now! You were missing my...my heartbeat and I guess I was missing...your scent...oh man,” he shook his head, followed by a yawn. “That explains a lot.”
“I know we have a lot to do today, or a least a lot Toby wants us to do,” droned Claire contentedly, voice growing drowsier by the word, “but now that we have...what was missing...maybe a quick nap first would be best,”
“...yeah,” Jim managed, smiling warmly as his eyes grew heavy. “Yeah, that’s a good idea...”
And the two drifted off into a very contented snooze.

D-Views: The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Bonjour, mes amies! Welcome, bienvenue, to another installment of D-Views, my written review series for films produced or inspired by the Walt Disney company! For more reviews for films like Enchanted, Star Wars Episode III, and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, feel free to consult my “Disney reviews” tag, and please, if you enjoy this review or any of the others, please consider liking and reblogging! I look forward to writing more of these in the future for films like Wreck-It Ralph and Halloweentown, as well as Non-Disney films like Charlotte’s Web.
I recently put out a poll suggesting three Disney Renaissance films for possible review subjects, and although The Little Mermaid won that poll, this film ended up not far behind. (Thank you, @schifty-al and @mygeekcorner for your votes!) It’s one of my personal favorite Disney films of all time...The Hunchback of Notre Dame!
Victor Hugo’s classic novel Notre Dame du Paris, called The Hunchback of Notre Dame in English, seems like a very odd inspiration for a Disney animated family film, and that’s because...yeah, it is! When the Disney animators first brought Hunchback to the table, they were less inspired by the original Hugo novel glamorizing the architecture of Notre Dame cathedral, and more inspired by a graphic novel adaptation of the story, which was likewise much more influenced by the 1939 Hollywood film adaptation. Because of the historical context that 1939 adaptation was made in (premiering at Cannes during the rise of the Third Reich), themes of social justice were added to a story that originally was about how the “edifice” can outlast the flaws and sins of mankind. The “social justice” element is something that Hugo interestingly put more in his follow-up to Notre Dame du Paris, the epic brick book Les Miserables, but has since been similarly tied in the public consciousness to The Hunchback of Notre Dame, despite not existing in the original book.
The project was already an odd choice for Disney to take on thanks to the darkness of the book, but the political themes also were unique for a Disney picture as well. It clearly was a more “adult” endeavor, even though thanks to the success of previous projects like Aladdin and The Lion King, there were studio mandates demanding more comic relief, and even the marketing team was reluctant to advertise Hunchback as anything other than a family film. Rather than showing the artistry and darker scenes, the marketing almost entirely focused on the Feast of Fools and the gargoyles, highlighting the “Ugly Duckling” aspect added to the story and downplaying the more adult themes. In the end, it’s likely thanks to those poor marketing choices and the inconsistent tone of the picture that this movie failed to find its audience on first run. It only earned $21 million worldwide, compared to Pocahontas’s $29 million and The Little Mermaid’s $84 million, with mixed critical and audience reaction. Although it was nominated for an Academy Award for its music and won several others, it was noticeably less successful than other installments in the Disney Renaissance, and even now, Disney often doesn’t give Hunchback that much attention. Like Quasimodo, the film has been sort of locked up in its own tower...but now, today, I aim to bring The Hunchback of Notre Dame out of the shadows and give it the appreciation it deserves.
Our film begins in complete darkness, accompanied by resounding church bells and the amazing vocalizations of the English Opera Company, and from the very beginning, I’m just enveloped by the embrace of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz’s unbelievable score. Choral music in general has always been something special in my family. My mum and dad were in choirs a lot of their lives: they even first met when they joined the San Diego Master Chorale in the 80′s. Choral music remains one of my mother’s greatest loves and passions, and when I saw Hunchback, it made the choral music my parents loved so much, which focused around a faith I hadn’t been raised with and didn’t believe in, that bit more accessible to me as a child. Mum, who studied Latin in college, went on to teach me about all of the chants and phrases Menken and Schwartz added to each song so that I could more appropriately sing along. It remains one of those Disney soundtracks that cemented our close bond, and I’ll always treasure being able to see the La Jolla Playhouse production of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with my mum and getting to hear the amazing choir and instruments live.
The Bells of Notre Dame, as an opening number, cannot be matched in how it introduces us all to the story, characters, themes, and tone of the piece. In just a few minutes, the music and lyrics perfectly showcases our setting, the theme of what makes a man, the atmosphere of fear and injustice, our villain, and our hero. Menken and Schwartz previously worked together on Pocahontas, but Hunchback in my opinion easily outstrips their previous collaboration. The use of church bells of all sizes to convey the solemnity, mystery, and grandeur of the cathedral at the center of the proceedings, and the clever use of Latin phrases -- it’s just unbelievable! As one example, in the sequence where Frollo (a judge in this version, as opposed to the Archdeacon) chases Quasimodo’s mother up to the stairs of Notre Dame and she pounds on the door, crying for help, the choir sings “Quantus tremor est futurus quando Judex est venturus,” which means, “What trembling is to be when the Judge comes.” And sure enough, the line comes to a horrible, horrified halt when Judge Frollo snatches the woman’s child away and throws her to the ground.
After one of the most epic musical introductions in a Disney film, we meet our sweet, gentle hero, Quasimodo, voiced by Tom Hulce, who is just such a ray of sunshine. Although I loved hearing Michael Arden as Quasimodo on stage, Tom Hulce will always be my Quasimodo. When I was a teenager, I went through a horrible “hating the world” phase where I only ever saw pain and suffering and felt not only powerless to make anything better, but worthless as well. During that time, I turned my back on a lot of the things that had brought me joy, feeling almost unable to enjoy them anymore. One of the very few exceptions, however, was this movie and especially the character of Quasimodo. When I was at my darkest points, Quasimodo never failed to bring me some light, not because he was particularly funny, but because for all of the misery in his circumstances, he never faltered in being gentle, creative, and kind. Looking back on how I’d been, I wish I’d had just a shred of Quasimodo’s grace back then. I wish I hadn’t allowed myself to fall into despair and resentment. Since I can’t go back, however, I keep Quasimodo in my mind sometimes whenever I’m going through something difficult. He’s kind of become a guardian angel of sorts to me, reminding me that my life is a precious gift and I shouldn’t take anything for granted. And really, I couldn’t do that if not for Tom Hulce and Quasimodo’s supervising animator, James Baxter. I truly am grateful to both of them for giving me a character that even now can be a symbol of everything I wish I could be.
Unfortunately along with Quasimodo, we also meet the gargoyles, Hugo, Victor, and Laverne. As a kid, I actually liked the gargoyles all right, but as an adult...yeah, they really break the mood. Badly. The worst offender is easily Hugo, which is a shame because I like Jason Alexander as a performer, but he just goes way too over-the-top-obnoxious. It would admittedly not be as bad if it were clear that the gargoyles were all in Quasimodo’s head, but Djali sees Hugo come to life at one point and they later help Quasimodo fight off the guards. I greatly prefer the way the gargoyles are handled in the stage production, where all of the saintly statues have their own voices that nonetheless reflect what Quasimodo is thinking and when Quasimodo hits his lowest point before Esmeralda’s execution, he forcefully banishes them out of his head.
Even though the comic relief is handled poorly, I certainly cannot say the same for the villain. Judge Claude Frollo is easily one of the most evil villains in Disney history. Tony Jay’s vocal performance is just chillingly resonant, commanding your attention and making you subconsciously shrink in on yourself whenever he speaks. It makes for a despicable, cold, cruel man -- the antithesis of a father, the true embodiment of a monster. Frollo is often compared to Mother Gothel from Tangled in how they both lie to, control, and emotionally abuse their charges (Quasimodo and Rapunzel, respectively), but I personally find Frollo so much worse than Gothel, because he not only cuts Quasimodo off from everyone, but he indoctrinates a gentle, kind soul like Quasimodo in his racism and intolerance against those different from him -- including Quasimodo’s own people, the Romani. Mother Gothel hoards Rapunzel away like a dragon hoarding treasure -- Frollo treats Quasimodo like a burden, beating into him that no one else would want him and that Frollo was such a “good man” to take him in. It’s just vile.
And now we come to my single favorite Disney song of all time -- Quasimodo’s aria, Out There. From the time I was little, this song spoke to me like few others did. Growing up, I was an only child with a huge imagination surrounded almost entirely by adults and who had a lot of difficulty relating to kids my age. I often liked being on my own, but it didn’t change how I often felt different and detached from the people around me, and as I got older, that feeling only increased. I moved a lot in my childhood, making it difficult for me to plant roots, and I rarely followed trends or popular norms, so I constantly stayed in the fringes of the crowd, enviously looking on at those who could fit in more easily than I could. I always tried to hide my insecurities, but they were still there, and when those insecurities took hold, I would often imagine the world being a place where I could be myself, just like Quasi does. Quasimodo’s longing to be “part of them” and lamentation of people being “heedless of the gift it is to be them” has always resonated with me, and even though it’s hard for me to sing Out There without shifting octaves, my heart swells every time I hear it.
The Captain of the Guard, Phoebus, is easily the biggest liberty that Hunchback adaptations have made with the original novel. The book version of Phoebus was more like Gaston from Beauty and the Beast than how he’s portrayed here, but I frankly have no complaints. Kevin Kline is wonderfully dry and witty in the role -- he’s more than a match for Esmeralda, being brave, noble, and sarcastic with seemingly no prejudice for those different from him. And then yeah, as for Esmeralda herself...as Phoebus says later, “what a woman!” Esmeralda was one of my very favorite Disney heroines as a kid, and she still is. The character of Esmeralda is often rather saint-like in her incarnations, but here we see both the “angelic” and “demonic” sides of her -- she’s fiery, but kind; rebellious, yet noble; anti-authority, but patient; distrustful, yet loyal. In the musical adaptation, when Esmeralda is first revealed, we hear Frollo, Phoebus, and Quasimodo sing this about her --
Frollo: She dances like the Devil!
Phoebus: She dances like an angel --
Quasimodo: An angel!
Phoebus: -- but with such fire!
Frollo: Such fire!
All Three: Who is she?
This is Esmeralda’s characterization and her relationship to the three male main characters in a nutshell. Quasimodo only sees the best of Esmeralda; Frollo only sees the worst of her; and Phoebus sees her for everything she is...as a person. And this is why she ultimately chooses Phoebus, unlike in the book where she solely chooses Phoebus because of his looks.
When we reach the Palace of Justice, I’m reminded that I have yet to accent how absolutely stunning every single background is in this movie. Yes, the animation overall is wonderful, whether in the character animation or otherwise, but there are few Disney films that have more atmospheric and beautiful backgrounds than this. It serves to give the movie such a wonderful depth and makes the setting feel that much richer and deeper. Admittedly one weaker aspect of the animation is the now-slightly-outdated CG background characters. They were made by taking a handful of templates and then mixing up their clothes and colors, so as to multiply them ad infinitum and make the crowds of Paris look bigger and more colorful. Even with that, though, you do sort of have to look carefully at the background crowds to notice, as there are lots of hand-drawn characters sprinkled in in front of those CG models that help obscure their repetition and awkwardness. Those CG crowds also make the city of Paris look appropriately overcrowded and huge, so I’m glad that they used the technology even if it was still so in-progress at the time.
Even though Topsy Turvy starts off so fun and festive, however, it soon devolves into a terrible riot where Quasimodo is bound and tormented by the crowd. I admit, the transition is a little abrupt, but it still works for me, as people can be so easily swept away by mob mentality and those in power -- namely, Frollo’s guards -- sometimes flaunt their authority by putting down others. Fortunately Esmeralda is there to save Quasimodo and give Frollo a much-deserved verbal smackdown. The following scene, though, is another example of the mismatched tone, stretching out Esmeralda’s escape with a lot of comic “hijinks” that don’t really add anything to the film and kind of serve as a big time waster, especially after it abruptly cuts off and turns much more solemn and sad as Frollo silently confronts Quasimodo and Quasi returns to Notre Dame in shame.
Hunchback’s focus on religion is, in my opinion, one of the things that made producing an adaptation of Hugo’s novel such a bold decision. I’m not a religious person at all (Agnostic and proud), but it was still really meaningful to me to see both the good and bad associated with religion, represented by the Archdeacon and Frollo respectively. Frollo, along with Pharaoh Seti from The Prince of Egypt, taught me as a kid that evil is not always self-aware and, more importantly, how much more dangerous evil is when it garbs itself in godliness and righteousness. That’s a valuable lesson, regardless of your religious faith. God Help the Outcasts may invoke God’s name, but it could just as easily be a prayer to the world, or even just to you as an individual. The Christian faith preaches that we are made in God’s image...so when Esmeralda asks God to help her people, maybe she’s in truth asking you to try to be the loving God they need.
Something unique about Hunchback is the wonderful friendship that develops between Esmeralda and Quasimodo. From the time I was very little, I made friends with both boys and girls, so it was so wonderfully refreshing to see a story where a girl and a boy became such close friends and supported each other so much. Yes, admittedly, Quasimodo is romantically interested in Esmeralda, but when he sees how much she loves Phoebus, he both accepts their relationship and treasures Esmeralda’s friendship all the same. He doesn’t wallow in bitterness upon Esmeralda not choosing him; he loves her all the same as the first real friend he’s ever had. Esmeralda truly loves Quasimodo and treasures their friendship too -- her choosing Phoebus romantically is never framed as her teasing Quasimodo or leading him on; she simply loves Phoebus and Quasimodo in different ways. And that I find so unbelievably cool. I also like that in Esmeralda’s and Quasimodo’s conversation on the roof, there are some strains of the deleted song Someday in the instrumental accompanying the scene -- you can hear a R&B variation of Someday in the film’s credits, but originally it was meant to replace the more religious God Help the Outcasts, only for God Help the Outcasts to be chosen over it. I agree with the filmmakers’ decision, but I still like Someday too. Quasimodo’s helping Esmeralda and Djali escape Notre Dame by climbing down the towers also beautifully foreshadows Quasimodo’s dexterity in climbing down to save Esmeralda at the end of the film.
Quasimodo and Frollo are both enthralled with Esmeralda, but as mentioned previously, they each only see the angelic and demonic sides of her, which is best encapsulated by the dual numbers Heaven’s Light and Hellfire. Heaven’s Light is appropriately sweet and pure, but I can’t beat around the bush here: Hellfire steals the show, not just from Heaven’s Light but from all other villain songs in Disney history. The song starts with a choral chant praying for forgiveness, which then segways into Frollo’s demented, mad raving about his lust, fear, and hatred for Esmeralda. The words are almost terrifying in their level of conviction and paranoia, which then devolves into vindictive, destructive mania, framed by the mournful echoes for “mercy” from the choir.
Right after Hellfire, we get one of my favorite instrumentals on the soundtrack called Paris Burning. The choir’s bustling, dramatic cries trimmed by the tense strings and horns of the orchestra just evokes fear and horror as Frollo terrorizes Paris. Then Phoebus finally takes a stand, refusing to set fire to the miller’s house and then, after Frollo does it himself, leaping in to save the family from the flames. In the musical, this whole sequence is accompanied by the amazing musical number Esmeralda (which honestly, every fan of this movie should listen to, it’s really worth it), but the film handles it unbelievably well with only a short scene and an instrumental that sears the final “Kyrie Eleison” into the audience’s ears like a fire brand.
Sadly, after this amazing, epic sequence, we once again are subjected to tonal whiplash when we return to the bell tower and the gargoyles decide to sing Quasimodo a song to cheer him up. Although I maintain Hunchback has one of the best soundtracks ever recorded, what stops it from being flawless is this song. A Guy Like You is not an inherently bad song on its own, but when combined with the rest of the soundtrack, its melody, tone, and out-of-place pop cultural references are just ridiculously jarring. It’s like we’ve been transported into a completely different movie, one less inspired by a classic French novel and a critically acclaimed film about social justice and one more inspired by Disney hits of the day like Aladdin and later projects like Hercules. As sad as it is, it’s kind of a relief when it’s over and we’re brought back down to earth by Esmeralda carrying a close-to-death Phoebus into Quasimodo’s tower.
Frollo’s arrival after Quasimodo agrees to hide Phoebus is excellent in its suspense. We can sense Frollo’s suspicion, and all the while, we’re so worried for Phoebus hiding under the very table he and Quasimodo are sitting at. Then Frollo, who we’ve only ever seen as cold, conniving, and controlled, bursts into a rage the kind of which we’ve never seen before, and for a second, he’s a demon himself. After his rage is spent, he sets his cruelest, most terrible trap yet: using Quasimodo’s feelings for Esmeralda so that he can capture her and the rest of the Romani. And at first, Quasimodo almost doesn’t take the bait, thanks to a short-lived pang of self-pity. At first he’s bitter about his heart being broken and considers not helping Esmeralda, as there’d seemingly be no “reward” in him doing so...but the feeling is quelled in seconds by the memory of Esmeralda and how much her friendship means to him. Quasimodo’s selflessness and goodness wins out in its struggle with his more selfish instincts...and this, in the end, is what makes Quasimodo a hero in my eyes.
All right, I guess with our entrance into the Court of Miracles, I should address the elephant in the room. I’ve called Esmeralda’s people “the Romani” in this review, but throughout the entire film, the term is substituted for the admittedly-period-appropriate slur “Gypsy.” I knew nothing about the Romani culture when I first saw this film and I profess no intimate knowledge of it now, but even with that, I have to acknowledge that this movie doesn’t always showcase the Romani in the best light. Although Quasimodo’s parents, Esmeralda, and (to a degree) Clopin are given relative sympathy, the sequence in the Court of Miracles doesn’t do much to endear them to the audience. These victims of persecution are not really given the focus they deserve: we never learn much about their culture or about why they’re persecuted, and we don’t really get to see how they live their lives as ordinary people. To someone who doesn’t know anything about the Romani, I don’t think this film would be the best introduction to their culture and heritage.
Our climax is accompanied by the best instrumental track in the film, Sanctuary! Whenever I hear this piece, I have to stay completely silent, drinking in every single line and note, so as to properly absorb its brilliance. The track has accompanied a lot of my writing in the past: it’s always helped me when I was writing a powerful, emotional climax, whether through the emotion it wrought from me or just from wanting to write a new scene to the music. This entire sequence, from a musical, writing, animation, and character point of view, is I think what made Disney decide to make this film in the first place. The pacing -- the character animation of Quasimodo tearing down the pillars -- the drawn backgrounds of Notre Dame -- the camera whirling over the never-ending crowd’s heads and up onto the cathedral as Quasimodo hoists Esmeralda over his head -- this is the heart of why the movie was made and what the entire film was building up to. This resistance against injustice and the protection of our sacred, historical institutions from hatred and cruelty is what Hunchback is and should be all about. Occasionally this battle scene is inter-spliced with comic bits that once again aren’t really necessary and kind of stick out (Laverne’s Wizard of Oz reference and Hugo’s impression of a fighter plane in particular are out of place), but it doesn’t ruin anything for me. Fortunately as the climax grows darker with the arrival of Frollo and the transition from Sanctuary! into And He Shall Smite the Wicked, the gargoyles take a backseat, and we get focus where we should’ve always had it: on Quasimodo, Esmeralda, and Frollo. Thanks to his love for his friend Esmeralda and the realization of his own self-worth, Quasimodo finally stands up to Frollo and breaks free of his poisonous influence once and for all. This line of Quasi’s has always stuck with me --
“All my life you’ve taught me the world is a dark, cruel place...but now I see the only thing dark and cruel about it is people like you!”
Even now this line is just so powerful. There was a point where all I saw of the world was its cruelties and injustices...but like Quasimodo, I’ve come to see that those cruelties are not inherent to the world or even to mankind as a whole. Humans are capable of both great evil and great good, but as long as the evil people of the world are allowed to seize control and exert their toxic influence over everyone else, the world and mankind overall will never become better. Like Quasimodo, we must stand against those who’ve embraced cruelty and hatred over acceptance and love. We must protect the brighter parts of the world that evil so wishes to snuff out. It’s a moral I think has only become more relevant and important over time.
Unlike in the book and musical, Esmeralda survives, and as much as I’ve heard people try to argue Esmeralda living is not true to the spirit of the original novel, I think it really suits the story being told and really feels just for both characters. Quasimodo deserved happiness; Esmeralda deserved happiness; and most importantly, this all the more highlights how different Quasimodo is from Frollo. Frollo says to Esmeralda, “Choose me or the fire” -- basically, if he can’t have her, he doesn’t want anyone else to...but Quasimodo doesn’t think that way. He cherishes Esmeralda and her friendship without any caveats or conditions: therefore him losing Esmeralda, whether to Phoebus or to death, doesn’t prompt him to commit suicide like he did in the novel. It’s not only a more uplifting ending, but I think a lesson in the selflessness of love, even if it’s just platonic love. And because Esmeralda loves Quasimodo just as much as a friend, she leads him out into the sun, where he finds even more of the love he deserves from the city he wished so much to belong in. Quasimodo doesn’t get the girl, but that was never what he wanted in the first place: it was merely to be accepted as he was.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame was one of the most formative films of my childhood, right up there with Beauty and the Beast, The Prince of Egypt, and Anastasia, and it remains my second favorite Disney animated film of all time. With time, I’ve seen more and more of its flaws, but those flaws don’t ruin what in the end is one of the most daring, revolutionary projects Disney Animation has ever tackled. Its artistry, from the backgrounds to the character animation, is exceptional; all of its major human characters are multi-faceted, complex, and real; its themes are eternally relevant and powerful; and its score and nearly all of its songs are just through the stratosphere in their quality. Hunchback, along with Beauty and the Beast, made me fall in love with France from afar as a child, a love affair that has only become more and more intense through the years, and Quasimodo and Esmeralda even now are so close to my heart. I wish so much to be as kind and gentle as Quasimodo and as brave and noble as Esmeralda, and I can only hope that at some point, if I ever visit Disneyland Paris, I might finally meet them. The Hunchback of Notre Dame may not have gotten the appreciation it deserved when it first came to theaters, but I’ll always be happy to hear Disney fans remembering it as fondly as I do. Who knows? Maybe someday, the world will be wiser and will give this film its time in the sun at long last.

Bleeding Love | Fliris
Who: @flynnfrederickson & @iristweed
When: Saturday, February 16th
Where: The Charming Dance Hall
What: After getting punched in the face by his ex-girlfriend, Flynn gets his wound tended to by Iris, and they discuss their feelings for each other.
Iris should have known it was too good to be true when Flynn had asked her to be his date to the dance. Hardly anyone in Walt even knew they knew each other, but she'd thought maybe the masks and the magic of a night like this one would have been a good way to blur the lines between Flynn's world and hers. She'd been so excited in the days leading up to it, and she'd even been buzzing with happiness when she'd arrived all dolled up and found herself on Flynn's arm. And then... Bobbiehad happened. Iris's roommate marching up to them and punching Flynn in the face had been the last thing Iris had expected to happen, but years of tending to hurt horses meant she hadn't wasted any time when Bobbie had stormed away. She'd taken her date's hand, steering him away from the watchful eyes of the crowd and straight towards the Charming Dance Hall's ice machine. It wasn't until she'd gently guided Flynn into a chair and started filling a bag full of ice that she had time to slow down and think. What if he didn't want to be here with her taking care of him right now? What if he wanted to be chasing after Bobbie? What if he regretted ever asking Iris to the dance at all? She hated that all those questions were running through her head, and she took one deep breath to clear them out of her mind as she turned back to face Flynn, offering him a sad smile. "Here, this might sting a little," she said as she gently pressed the ice to his eye. "Could you still see okay?"
Flynn was still trying to process exactly what had happened. One moment, he was dancing with Iris and excited to be there with her, the next moment his ex girlfriend's fist was in his face and his eye felt like it was swelling. It took a while for him to even understand why, but sometime between being on the dance floor and getting to the bathroom, he figured that Bobbie must have found out about who he'd had sex with, and knew that it wasn't a coincidence that he 'got matched with' Iris. Or maybe she was mad that he didn't tell her he was taking another girl to the dance at all, since they'd gone to the past three ones together, whether they were dating or not. But regardless, he now sat in the bathroom with Iris tending to him like a wounded horse, and he just felt bad that she was in here and not having fun at the dance. He hissed once the cold ice hit his eye, but eventually the pain numbed. "Yeah, it's blurry, but it's there," he sighed, holding the ice to his eye for her. "I'm sorry. I knew I shouldn't have brought you into this -- my friends, they're great but...Also not sometimes." He gestured to his eye with a sad chuckle. "And Bobbie and me...we're still....complicated."
Iris wondered what was going through Flynn's head, but she was scared to ask, not wanting to upset this delicate new balance that they'd found. She wasn't a part of his 'Walt world,' she wasn't one of his 'cool friends,' but she wanted to be somebody special to him, in secret or not, and if she had to bite her tongue and not pry to maintain a chance of being that... Well, then she would. Or she'd at least try not to pry too much, staying focused on his injuries instead. She brushed her fingers gently across his cheek, trying to see if that was swelling, too, or if the brunt of Bobbie's blow had landed right on his eye. "We'll give you a couple of minutes with the ice on before we check on it again. Hopefully you didn't burst a blood vessel; I've seen that happen when people get black eyes and it's so creepy looking." Iris giggled - it was nervous and hollow compared to her real joy from earlier, but it was tentative laughter all the same. "Not that you wouldn't still be very handsome, you'd just be... spooky handsome instead." Iris bit her lip, using her free hand to squeeze one of his reassuringly. "It's okay. I'm just sorry that I made things worse for you," she told him, focusing her attention on his eye so that she wouldn't hang her head in shame. "I mean... I'm sure you would have had a great time if you'd just come here with Bobbie instead, too, and your eye would probably hurt a lot less."
Flynn chuckled at the idea of his eyes being all permanently bloodshot. "Hey, maybe that means Bobbie will have turned me into the red-eyed demon she's been thinking I am. I didn't tell you, but she found out that I told you about us being virgins and has hated me ever since. I've been in the dog house for months." He didn't think too much of Bobbie's anger -- It was like Kevin said, just girl stuff. But then she punched him in the face, and he realized she was way more mad than he originally thought. He squeezed Iris's hand back. "No, you didn't make anything worse at all. None of this is your fault. I'm one-hundred percent to blame. I'm the one who told you about our secret and I'm the one who...did the thing with you under those pretenses and I'm the one who never even told her that you and I were friends to start with." He sighed, then, realizing something way more important than his busted eye, in his opinion. "Wait -- she mentioned the letters. That's mortifying. I'm so sorry." He couldn't think what he'd written to Iris at any point that would be mortifying, but he knew that if Bobbie had found his secret stash of letters, he'd be mortified anyway.
Iris felt the tips of her ears turn pink when he said she didn't make anything worse. Phew . All she'd ever wanted was to be a bright spot in Flynn's life, the way he was for her, and she never would have forgiven herself if she'd ended up being the opposite. Still, after years of being 'secret friends' and tiptoeing around to avoid notice from his friends, somehow this was the most awkward she'd ever felt. She'd always assumed that it was Flynn and Bobbie, Bobbie and Flynn, and that that was a forever kind of thing... but ever since Thanksgiving, she'd been hoping more and more that that chapter of Bobbie and Flynn was over, and that maybe there could be an Iris and Flynn instead. It felt so silly now, though, with the way Bobbie had reacted to tonight, and it made Iris hesitant to ask him what he was thinking, how he was feeling. Bobbie suddenly felt like an off-limits topic, like something that was none of her business despite the fact that the other girl had just tried to ruin her night... And then, before she could even formulate a response, she caught the last thing that Flynn said and her heart nearly stopped. "Oh my God, I was so busy worrying about you I didn't even... I totally missed that," Iris admitted, her throat feeling like it was closing up. It was her fault, if Bobbie was mad about the letters -- how could she have been so careless? "Oh gosh, I'm always so good at hiding them, I don't know how she would have... I mean, I keep them in this really pretty box on my desk, and Bobbie's never seemed like the type of person to snoop and..." Iris squeezed her eyes shut, wishing she could pretend that this wasn't happening. She wanted to go back to laughing it off, to teasing Flynn about his spooky eye or maybe even to just dancing blissfully away from everyone's notice... But that was past, and when she finally blinked her eyes shut, she was still with the boy who made her happiest -- but he still had bruises from his ex's fist, and he was still watching her expectantly for a reaction with his one good eye. "I'm going to have to sleep in the barn for the rest of the year, aren't I?"
Flynn gnawed at his bottom lip, trying to think of how Bobbie could've found the letters at all when he saw how flustered that made Iris. "If it makes you feel any better, I know she's not the kind of person to snoop. Maybe she thought the box was hers, or went looking for something else or something. And -- oh God, those things date back to when she and I were together," he leaned his head back, lightly knocking it against the wall, punishing himself for being so dumb. The letters weren't incriminating in the slightest, but he could only imagine the shock of all these secret letters coming to light dating back to freshman and sophomore year. Suddenly he was feeling kind of bad for Bobbie, and even stupider than ever. When Iris asked her question about the barn, Flynn couldn't help but laugh a bit. It may not have been appropriate, but they were kind of at rock bottom -- there was nowhere to go but up. "Maybe." He let his tone grow serious again. "Though I don't think Bobbie is who you need to look out for -- it's her friends," he admitted. "But if worse comes to worse, you can stay with me. And I'll be glad to be just as hospitable as you were to me for Thanksgiving," he smirked suggestively, squeezing Iris's hand. "Is it weird that after all of this I still want to kiss you? I had this whole thing planned out and I was gonna ask if you wanted to like....I dunno, take things slow, but still progress. Together. But that was kind of ruined so now I've gotta ask you with a busted eye and I can't kiss you cause my ice pack is in the way. That is, if you even still would want that."
Iris was trapped inside of her own head, trying to retrace her own footsteps and figure out what could have happened. Had she bumped her letters off of her desk? Left her desk open? Left one lying out? Or was Flynn wrong, and Iris's dreamy, far off look whenever she'd opened the box lately had made Bobbie so curious she couldn't help herself anymore? Or maybe it wasn't even Bobbie, but a bored friend who'd come to get ready with her and taken it upon themselves to look at Iris's most private things? But she had to stop worrying; Iris turned her focus back to Flynn, reaching her free hand out to catch his head before he could hit it against the wall anymore, threading her fingers absentmindedly through the hair there and pulling him closer. She wanted to keep him focused on something else besides hurting himself anymore than he'd already been hurt, and she made excuses for wanting to keep holding onto him like this, mentally attributing it to the fact that it was easier to hold the ice steady when his face was in one steady position, too. "I mean... if it makes you feel better, most of those are at home? I mean, there are a couple of my favorite ones, but I don't have... I mean, it's mostly just the ones from this year, I clean my room out before summer vacation every year and take things I don't 100% need with me," Iris told him softly. Maybe it was reassuring, maybe it wasn't; she'd been so excited about this night and she'd honestly do just about anything to save it. It turned out, though, that she wasn't the savior here after all; Flynn's words brought a disbelieving smile to her face. "I um, actually think I'd really like that kind of hospitality. It sounds much cozier than cuddling with a bunch of hay," she informed him, her cheeks hot again just thinking about it. She thought about it a lot, had ever since they'd been like that the first time, but she'd thought if it ever did happen again, it was a long way off, like maybe if he came home with her again for the Derby or something. She hadn't pictured it in Walt -- she'd never let herself picture much of anything beyond letters in Walt, really. Now, though, it suddenly seemed so real, and if it weren't for the ice in her hand, making her almost shiver from its coldness and barely hiding Flynn's swelling eye from her, she'd almost have been able to forget the bad parts of the night at all. "Well... I mean, you're not supposed to over ice things, in a minute or two we'll have to take it off and give your skin a chance to get back to room temperature," Iris said, a flirtatious smile playing at her lips. "So... sounds like that kiss might be more possible than you think," she told him, licking her lips unthinkingly, her voice getting softer as she tentatively lowered the ice pack away from his eye.
Flynn felt Iris's hand at the back of his head and let out a breath, placing his hand over hers, lacing their fingers together. She was always looking out for him...why? He was such a screw-up, he didn't deserve this or her. "Okay, that's not too bad then." He'd been slacking on his letters this year anyway, then a thought came to him and sent his lips curling up into a smirk. "You have favorites? Which ones?" he teased, running his thumb over the back of Iris's hand. "I mean, I have been told I've got the personality of a stack of hay so like...you'll feel right at home cuddling me instead. And you're right, I can make it so much more cozy." he chuckled, noticing the blush in her cheeks and feeling his own redden. He wished they'd talked about the sex sooner, so he wouldn't feel so clammy bringing it up even indirectly. "Which, like, just to be transparent here -- I meant what I said in the letter. About Thanksgiving being super amazing and right. And I didn't just ask you to the dance to get you to have sex with me again, though that would be a fun and exciting bonus. But I really like you. And even though things are weird right now, I kinda want to be your friend like, in public. Or -- well, more than your friend, but since things are weird, we can like, take it slow. If you'd be down." He shrugged, not entirely sure if he got his point across in that ramble or not, but that didn't matter once Iris was taking his ice pack away and licking her lips. "Oh, that's real useful information, then. Get over here," he chuckled, sliding their interlocked hands down from behind his head and laid Iris's hand on his shoulder. He cupped her cheeks and pulled her in, pressing his lips to hers as passionately as he could with an aching eye and cheek.
Iris stuck her tongue out at Flynn. "You're lucky you're hurt right now, it's saving you from getting swatted at for even asking," she laughed, wondering whether he had favorites, too, or if that was just a her thing. "Although I totally have to take that box with me everywhere I go from like, now on, so maybe you'll have a chance to peek and see sometime." They were Flynn's words, after all; it only seemed fair for him to be allowed to relive them. After all, she'd kept them because they were special between them, they hardly would have mattered if they'd just been blank pages without Flynn's words on them. "No way, you have not been told that! That's such a weird insult, and I should know, I get all kinds of weird horse girl ones all the time," Iris pointed out matter of factly. There was no hint of sadness in her voice -- she could hardly be sad around someone who filled her heart with so much happiness, but it wasn't even that. It just didn't bother her, the words people tossed at her, the way people looked at her. It would only cut her to her core if someone actually took the time to know her and hated what was on the inside, but for now, she had thicker skin than that... and she could only hope that skin stayed strong, now that Bobbie knew who she was and her friends were sure to follow. "And I kind of accidentally totally skipped over it in my letter back, I was too excited about saying yes to this dance! But it was really special for me. I mean, you knew how I felt about it - I wouldn't have wanted to if I didn't really care about you," she pointed out, chewing on her bottom lip again. This was exciting, wasn't it? Saying things to Flynn with spoken words instead of written ones? All of this was exciting, filling Iris with a kind of cloud-like high that she'd never known she could even feel. "I'd be very, very down," Iris whispered, following his directions a little too eagerly, having to remind herself at the last moment to be gentle with Flynn and his aching face as she kissed him back urgently, as if it were her first kiss and maybe the very last she'd ever have on earth, like it was the most important kiss in the world. And maybe it was -- if Flynn was true to his word, then it was the start of something brand new, an exciting and different chapter for them that she couldn't wait to write together.

LOST rewatch (season 2):
[follow the entire rewatch-tag here]
episode 1 – Man of Science, Man of Faith:
It’s Desmond tiiiiiime!!!! Maaaaake your own kind of muuuusiiiiiic!!!
>:
OH MY GOD Jack’s flashback hair is horrible.
Desmond’s accent alone is worth watching the show but honestly, his whole character is a total game changer. He’s the personified sci-fi element and I McFriggin love it!
episode 2 – Adrift:
Big feels for Sawyer here
Does this count as the first on-island flashback when we see John climbing down the hatch? Because we already saw what happened after that in the previous episode… I guess it’s only a mini flashback but still… it is…
Awwww it’s the Dharma sharky
With every Michael flashback I hate his ex even more.
How did everything that’s happened so far only happen in 44 days?!?! It feels like they gone through enough drama for a whole year.
“box man”
episode 3 – Orientation:
Katey Sagal <3
Kate discovering the real important shit – first the chocolate, now the guns
“You needed a father figure and I needed a kidney.” Fuck you Anthony Cooper.
“Why do you find it so hard to believe?” – “Why do you find it so easy?” – “IT’S NEVER BEEN EASY!!!” --- you tell him, John!!!
episode 4 – Everybody Hates Hugo:
I missed Rose!
….Hurley’s boss at the fast food restaurant… ain’t that the same guy who bullied John at the box company? Did I ever notice that before?
episode 5 – …And Found:
Jin’s hair growing longer is all I ever needed for my inner peace.
That Sun + John scene in her garden :’)
I forgot how good the score of that show is. Suck me right up with the feels!
episode 6 – Abandoned:
Oh nooo… that the episode where Shannon dies? Please don’t!!!
I can never understand what it is Ghost Walt is saying to Shannon
John holding the baby *external screaming*
I’ll forever be bitter that they killed Shannon off – all the missed potential for character development
episode 7 – The Other 48 Days:
It’s Nathan Ingram looking like Indiana Jones.
Is it ever explained what the Arrow Station was for?
It’s so annoying that the place Ana killed Goodwin isn’t the same place where Jin finds his corpse in the jungle.
episode 8 – Collision:
Kate winning against Jack at golf is what I’m here for.
I wish Ana Lucia and Sayid had gotten more scenes together after that
“What good would it be to kill you if we’re both already dead?”
That reunion scene of Rose & Bernard and Sun & Jin is soooooo kitschy, I love it
episode 9 – What Kate Did:
Petition for Daniel Daw Kim to be topless more often
I… didn’t remember Sawyer fever-mumbles to Jack that he loves Kate
Ah yes, it’s the black horsey episode
Shannon’s funeral :’( whyyyyyy?????
“Boy, when you say beginning you mean… beginning.”
I’m trying to figure out who cut out part of the Orientation video… was it Kelvin?
Kate’s dad, who’s a very high ranking soldier: “I don’t have murder in my heart.” Me: …..sure, Jan.
“Don’t mistake coincidence for fate.” Mr. Eko and John could have had sooo many intriguing conversations; it’s a pity they had to write him out.
episode 10 – The 23rd Psalm:
I don’t like the whole drug plot but that’s probably because that means more plot for Charlie… like… don’t get me wrong: I like the backstory, but not the new found drama with Charlie
Smokey in his whole glory. That scene is so breath taking, I love it.
episode 11 – The Hunting Party:
I had forgotten the whole “Michael locks John and Jack up in the armory”-bit
And Jack and Locke actually taking a button-shift together? That’s programmed trouble.
Fuck you Jack! Take Kate with you! You’ve known her for…. What? Over 50 days? You know she won’t stay behind. You’re really no good judge of character, are you?
funny how John is so curious about Sawyer’s name… kinds foreshadowing to the whole Anthony Cooper connection as if John already felt it somehow
Geronimo Jackson
episode 12 – Fire + Water:
I find it interesting that they chose a + symbol for the title instead of “and” or an ampersand.
Charlie’s parents’ accents are… bad.
“Now Locke’s your friend, eh?” oh shut the fuck up Charlie!!!
Hurley as Jesus on Charlie’s dream is foreshadowing
The difference between Charlie and John is that John is protective over Claire and Aaron whereas Charlie is possessive.
“[Kate’s] hot, [Jack’s] hot” – Ana Lucia, confirmed bisexual.
YAAAAS!!! Hit the bastard, John! You show him!!!!
episode 13 – The Long Con:
“You wanna break seven virgin Marys? Be my guest! But I’m superstitious.”
Yunjin Kim is the only person on earth that can make the colour orange look good to me
Seriously… I didn’t remember why exactly I dislike Charlie so much but season 2 reminds me episode by episode.
episode 14 – One Of Them:
IT’S HAPPENING! EVERYBODY STAY CALM!!!!
I’m so here for every scene between Sayid and Danielle
Amazing “arm waving through a tent” acting @Michael Emerson!!!
“My name is Henry Gale, I’m from Minnesota.” LIIIIIIAAAAAARRRR!!!
I think the first time I watched it I was so excited about Michael Emerson that I didn’t notice the guy who’s talking to Sayid in the next scene is Kelvin.
The first time John sees his future island husband… awwwww :’)
Funny how at first John doesn’t believe Ben’s act but later he’s like “tell me all the lies, I’ll believe you anything, my dear!”
“Why would you travel [in a hot air balloon]?” – “Because I was rich.” Has any line in the entire show ever been that real?
I have trouble believing that Jack is physically stronger than John.
The first time we see the hieroglyphs on the timer.
episode 15 – Maternity Leave:
Alex!!! My pretty little child!!!
Oh my sassy dear rat boy
And creepy Ethan is back.
Mr. Eko: *cuts his beard off* – Not Henry Gale: Okay, wtf?
“Are you the genius or are you the guy who’s feeling like he’s always living in the shadow of the genius?” Ben you little asshole!
episode 16 – The Whole Truth:
Daniel Dae Kim shirtless again – thanks for answering my prayers
Terry O’Quinn gets sexier the scruffier he is
Does Sun realise she’s pregnant this early?!?!?!
Okay John just totally took a glance at Jack’s dick after he was getting out of the shower.
“Jack and Locke are a little too busy worrying about Locke and Jack.”
Oh riiiight, Kate doesn’t know about Not Henry Gale
The fact that Ana Lucia and Sayid get along okayish fills my heart with so much joy but then I remember she’s gonna be dead in like… 2 episodes and I hate that.
“Men reject their prophets and slay them but they love their martyrs and honour those whom they have slain. So what’s the difference between a martyr and a prophet?”
episode 17 – Lockdown:
The first time Ben yells “Jaaawwwn!”
There’s also more and more Emerchesthair going on and I’m here for it!!!
“How about you put your mangos where your mouth is?”
Anthony Cooper you fucking asshole.
John just found the most inappropriate time to propose to someone
“You came back!” – “Did you think I was gonna leave you here?!”
episode 18 – Dave:
I wish Hurley’s story wasn’t focussing on his weight to much
John putting in a good word for Not Henry Gale is my vibe!
Never mind… bondage Ben is MY VIBE!!!
“God doesn’t know how long we’ve been here, John. He can’t see this island any better than the rest of the world can.” --- that’s one of the most underrated lines in the entire show I think.
episode 19 – S.O.S.:
Moooore chesthair action!!!
I love that Rose and Bernard just fairly recently met and haven’t been together for like 30 years already.
episode 20 – Two For The Road:
Ugh is that the Ana Lucia/Christian Shephard episode?? I’m always in for more daddy Shephard.
Strangulation really is Ben’s go to kill method, isn’t it?
“I was coming for you.” – you sure were, my guy. You sure were.
episode 21 - ? :
“the artist formerly known as Henry Gale”
Terry O’Quinn’s arms give me life
It’s the Pearl station
Oh riiiight there’s been cameras in the Swan station, totally forgot that
“every single second of my pathetic little life is as useless as that button” poor John
Sawyer comforting Kate… I’m here for it!
episode 22 – Three Minutes:
Oh Alex, my sweet angel
“we got caught in a net” – “why are you telling me this, Sawyer?” – “because you’re about the closet thing I got a friend on this island, Doctor.” I wish they had spent more time focussing on that broship rather than the love triangle
DESMOND’S BACK!!!!
episodes 23 and 24 – Live Together, Die Alone:
“we’re stuck in a bloody snow globe”
Charles fucking Widmore, my OTV – One True Villain
Aaah it’s the weird Hurley bird
John crying in the jungle breaks my heart (and fuck you Charlie for making fun of him)
“with enough money and determination you can find anyone”
Desmond realising John saved his life by hammering on that hatch door is one of the best moments in the whole show.
Not Henry Gale is back, my bebe, right there with the dramatic appearance on a boat
Desmond really big on competing against Sayid in the “who’s got the best island hair”-competition (Sayid still winning tho)
“I’m sorry for whatever happened that made you stop believing but it’s all real.”
“We’re the good guys, Michael!”
#lost show#lost#lost abc#Maddie rewatches LOST#yes#i did watch 8 episodes today#need to got to my boy Not Henry Gale quickly okay?!

you know it !
Are you sure?
Please answer the following: Who could Hercules date? whoever he would like 2 as long as it makes him happy i would like good things for him please: (
Character you want?
Sorrel White.
Please describe the character for us
Sorrel, to me, is an incredibly self-sacrificing person. she’d put everyone above her own safety and wellbeing. this doesn’t come from a place of self-hatred or lack of self-worth. Instead, her selfless actions come from what her father taught her growing up. Sorrel loved her father, more than anything – & now, she feels if that she acts selfishly or ignores others wellbeing, she’d be doing a disservice to him and all that he taught her. She is, unfortunately, the last of him that remains in this world and thus – she feels she needs to do her very best to defend his honour and act just as he would of.
yet, she isn’t always as brave, and her bones aren’t as strong as his, and sometimes she can’t help but sway in the wind where she would want to stand just a little bit firmer. that isn’t to say she just lets people walk over her, but she often finds that she’s unable to succinctly draw the line that her father could of being selfless, generous and caring whilst defending herself & what she believes in. she is getting better. she is now learning; but just after her fathers’ death, she struggled with it the most, being put through the most horrendous tasks by her step-mother. she gave in to her whims without question at first, only assuming that’s how her father probably would have encouraged her to act, for, they loved each other? Sorrel never saw regina with any kind of motherly view, but if it was someone her father cared for, that meant they should be deserving of her love too – and that how they treated her? well, there was most likely a reason for it.
When she learnt what the queen really had planned for her, part of Sorrel broke that day. Bambi eyes spread wide at the movement of the huntsmans’ axe. In a second, before the weapon tore through porcelain skin, she learnt that people’s intentions are not always good. and she cannot assume that everyone is as deserving of her affections. It took a little bit of time for that trauma to … actually sink in though. she couldn’t not help out those dwarves ! ^^ & perhaps this time her trust wasn’t misplaced, but they helped her grapple with the unspoken trauma she had suffered. not only did she gain 7 new family members, but seven friends. She knew, she would have to live them behind when word of her survival began to spread. Not only for her safety, but for theirs. If the queen was after her head, then her pure presence would put those hiding her in the path of danger too. She can’t help but think of others before herself, even throughout everything she’s experienced, she still clings to her dad’s teachings like a lifeboat in the tumutulous storm of her life. Her positive attitude and caring voice is her one rock, well, her other rock is her love for horticulture and cooking. But the latter two are more just additional coping mechanisms than anchors to help keep her grounded.
In …. she is trying to keep a low profile to avoid further danger, yet, she often forgets that and still does her best. She runs errands for her neighbours and refuses to take anything in thanks, always tips 30% despite not having the most savings, and goes to feed the ducklings at the parks’ pond on her daily walks no matter rain or sun. the world can be falling around her, but not only is she a naturally pleasant person, she clings to the little habits of her father. for as long as she acts in his steed, in his manners, then she knows he’s always with her.
Second character choice
n/a
It’s time to see that sample para.
Sorrel barely caught her own reflection in the ripples of the lake; brown doe eyes only briefly casting across the ruptured surface. Instead of being transfixed with her beauty, not a sin in and of itself – just not something sorrel was so particularly interested in, she was just so focused on the glint of scales beneath the waters skin. and how all the goldfish came up as if to say hello, puckering the surface with their fishy lips. the animals who once skittered at the sight of her, now buzzed where the light could hit them. perhaps they knew that sorrel was a kind and kindred spirit of nature, or perhaps, more likely, they had realised she most always brought left over fish food. ( the scorched crumbs of the bread she had burned testing out the new oven. )
“ now, now, no need to squabble. i’ve brought enough food for everyone, “
words punctuated in-between light rounds of laughter, ringing as clear as wedding bells. she’d found this area of the park to be secluded enough that she could let her guard down as much as she liked. The silk scarf around her black hair loosened ever so lightly. it was odd … for it to be so quiet, relaxing and unnerving at the same time. she missed the bustle of living in such a rowdy cottage, and she missed her friends from the castle too, she missed – - no. there were many men missing in her life by this point, and dwelling on them in silence was going to do her no good. this is why she disliked silence, she thought bitterly, too much time alone left her mind wandering in dark forests were girls shouldn’t wander off too on their own.
before it even really crossed her mind, she began to hum out of habit, a tune she had heard thousands of times before. heard so many times that the majority of the words had devolved into faint syllables in the back of her mind. a bird soon joined in, then two, a third bluebird flying down from a tree to perch on a jutting out rock. red lips pulled into a smile, suddenly, like a weight lifted from her shoulders, the grey clouds were parting and she no longer felt so alone in this new town.
singing rounds in a hushed tone, sorrel stayed there in contempt for a small passage of time – comfortable if only for a brief moment of time. the sounds of voices drawing ever nearer, and the heavy pounding of boots sends a shock down her spine – her mind draws a blank and eyes see a flash of silver. she’s … imagining things? she hopes, at the very least, just an overactive imagination. she pulled her scarf tightly around cropped raven hair and gathered her belongings, not until she had shaken the last of the crust crumbs out of the bag. she heard the fish give her one last round of applause as she hastily brushed out her skirt. moving from the almost desolate park into the city streets, sorrel did her best to blend in with the crowd of nameless faces, but one thing still set her apart – apple red lips pulled into a light smile, knowing, or at least hoping, that things would look up from here.
Anything else, love?
could i please change the fc to park sooyoung (joy) if possible? ty!

Catherine of Siena--A Marvel of Wisdom
Some fifteen years ago, a gathering of the who’s who of Catholic feminism issued the Madeleva Manifesto: A Message of Hope and Courage to Women in the Church. The signatories to the Manifesto included Charlie Curran’s defender Monika Hellwig and women’s ordination advocate, Joan Chittister. Not by accident, they issued their declaration on April 29, the feast of Catherine of Siena.
It’s not so difficult to understand why feminists wish to claim the patronage of Saint Catherine. After all, a version of her life might go something like this: At seven years of age a girl determines never to marry. At age 12, she is pressured by her parents to submit to an arranged marriage, she defiantly cuts off her hair and neglects her appearance. Later, the young woman develops quite a following in her town. Men and women alike seek her counsel. Soon she is bringing influence to bear in political circles unknown to women. She arbitrates family feuds. She brokers peace within and between the city-states of Tuscany. Bankers, generals, princes, dukes, kings, and queens, as well as scholars and abbots seek her counsel. Her admonitions inspire the pope to restore the papacy to Rome. She writes one of the greatest works of medieval literature. She accomplishes all of this in 33 years. When, six centuries later, she is at last declared a Doctor of the Roman Catholic Church she is only the second woman at the time to receive the honor. A real glass-ceiling breaker, Catherine made it big in a man’s world.
Missing in this account are the young Tuscan maid’s motives, considerably different from those that inform feminism. Here’s a sample of Joan Chittister’s thought:
I celebrate myself, the poet Walt Whitman wrote. The thought is so delicious it is almost obscene. Imagine the joy that would come with celebrating the self—our achievements, our experiences, our existence. Imagine what it would be like to look into the mirror and say, as God taught us, “That’s good.”
In marked contrast, Saint Catherine never understood herself as a pioneer for women’s rights, much less a model for narcissistic self-fulfillment. On the contrary, she put into practice the truth her Holy Bridegroom revealed to her early in her mystical life: “I am that which is; you are that which is not.”
“I must decrease, that He may increase,” declared John the Baptist, and we can say that John the Baptist’s modus operandi was also Saint Catherine’s: empty the soul of self to make room for the grace of the Savior. Insofar as we can do this, Our Lord can work remarkable, magnificent, and indeed miraculous things through us, just as he did through the diminutive dyers’ daughter six and a half centuries ago.
Catherine was born on the Feast of the Annunciation in 1347. Catherine and her twin, Giovanna, who died at birth, were numbers 23 and 24 to Giacomo and Lapa Benincasa, father and mother of an established Sienese family. Within 13 months of her birth the Black Plague laid waste to Tuscany. The population of Florence fell from some 120,000 to 30,000. Contemporary accounts describe men and women feeling in one moment the swelling of infection and in the next moment dropping dead, only to be thrown, without ceremony into one of the many shallow mass graves that surrounded the city.
Catherine was spared, but only to come of age in a world beset by other afflictions: plagues political and spiritual. Holy Mother Church had lost much of the moral authority she had gained in the ages of Pope Saint Gregory VII and the popes of the crusading era. Insofar as he ruled at all, the Successor of Peter ruled not from the Eternal City, but from the opulence and luxury of distant Avignon, where the papacy suffered its—as the Italians would have it—Babylonian Captivity.
The effect of the Avignon papacy on the city where Peter and Paul gave their lives for Jesus Christ was devastating. Brigandage was the rule rather than the exception, prompting Bridget of Sweden to lament, “Oh Rome your walls are broken down, your gates are left unguarded. Your vessels are sold and your altars are desolate. The living sacrifice and morning incense are consumed in the outer courts and therefore the sweetest odor of sanctity no longer rises from the Holy of Holies.”
The whole of Christendom suffered with the papacy so weakened. The King of Hungary waged war with both Venice and the Holy Roman Emperor. England began her series of unjust depredations on France that came to be known as the Hundred Years War. Indeed, the battle of Crecy, where English infantry bested the flower of French Cavalry, took place one year after Catherine’s birth. During the intermittent truces of that terrible conflict, unemployed bands of English mercenaries rode south to Italy and found employment offering their brutality for hire to the highest bidder among the warring Tuscan republics. Bernabo Visconti, Duke of Milan, squared off against the Pope, whose French legates ruled their Italian provinces like occupying foreigners rather than princes of the Church. Florence, Lucca, Pisa, and Siena fought each other, even as they shifted alliances on the world stage. And within the Tuscan republics themselves, internal strife setting commoner against noble and papal loyalists against rebels, made city life hazardous according to ever-changing political winds. Florence’s battle between Guelphs and Gibbellines is the most famous of these internecine wars, but Catherine’s Siena suffered internal strife every bit as severe as plot, conspiracy, and revenge killing meant that government changed hands with such frequency that those in power one day would find themselves in the shambles the next. “The laws that the Sienese make in October are not valid in November,” wrote Dante.
Things had hardly improved a generation later.
And yet, in the midst of this chaos and without separating itself from the world, the Benincasa household was an oasis of joyful family life, industry for the glory and honor of God, and sanctity. It was in this domestic Church that Catherine came of age.
Believers in the miracles that attach to the childhood of Catarina Benicasa would be ridiculed as credulous by our own age, but there is enough testimony of a miraculous adult life to suggest a childhood marked by wonders. Visions of our Lord and his saints reinforced the girl’s piety made manifest in the severest of self-imposed privations: fasting, flagellation, and denial of sleep. At an early age she vowed to give herself entirely to our Lord. When at last she declared her intentions to her family her brothers threatened her and her mother wailed aloud. It was not merely a matter of obedience. The most reliable force against the political unrest of Siena was the relationships among extended families joined by marriages. Giacomo, however intervened declaring that Catherine had chosen a better Spouse than they could ever hope to find.
Catherine’s mystical marriage to Our Lord, attended by our Lady and St. John the Evangelist and sealed by a ring of pearls visible only to her, came on the night her fellow Sienese were in the throes of pre-Lenten revelry. Her mission clear, the little dyer’s daughter devoted her life to works of mercy. In time she received the mantel of the Dominican tertiaries and took up service of the wretched in the Siena’s hospital, Santa Maria della Scala. Catherine’s patients were those no other would take: aged courtesans and “superannuated prostitutes,” as Sigrid Undset describes them, who took perverse delight in scolding their saintly nurse and spreading vicious rumors about her. Catherine served them all the more, cleaning their fetid sores and bringing them back to God through her example of humility.
Catherine’s evident sanctity attracted countless souls seeking counsel. She turned philanderers away from their sins and converted hardened criminals on the way to the scaffold. She attracted the attention of theologians seeking to expose a hoax. A weeklong examination before Florence’s Dominicans found a devout young girl given abundant graces by God and with a remarkable command of both Catholic doctrine and Tuscan politics. There she met her biographer and spiritual director, Blessed Raymond of Capua, and was also assigned several priests who served as confessors to her growing flock, the Caterinati. And there, in Florence, she found herself drawn into the political disputes of 14th Century Christendom.
The political details of this age are bewildering. What Christians must take from the story is the consistent theme of Catherine’s political correspondence. We have today nearly 400 of Catherine’s letters, an archive of priceless value to medieval historians. The uneducated girl could not write, yet early in her public life she acquired a band of secretaries. All of them would testify that the saint could dictate three letters at once on different topics and not lose the thread of any of the letters. On one occasion all three of her secretaries, having themselves lost the thread of their respective letters, copied the same sentence. They all paused to look at Catherine. For whom was the sentence intended? “For all of you,” she answered, “and you will see when we complete the letters how our Lord has ordered the words of each toward his perfect plan.”
To all of the nobility and politicians to whom Catherine wrote, she stressed: a good ruler must first be a good person. “Politics are never anything but the product of a person’s religious life,” she wrote. “Break the chains of sin; cleanse yourself by confession. Only then will you be real rulers. For who can really be master if he is not master of himself, if reason does not rule his passions?”
Catherine’s greatest political success was also a spiritual triumph—convincing Pope Gregory XI to return the papacy to Rome. Because she commanded the actions of the pope, it is doubtless this action which most excites the feminists. Alas, they entirely miss the point. At no time ever in her correspondence with Gregory, which is indeed direct, does she question his authority. On the contrary she tells him “Esto vir!” You are the man. Use your authority.
Catherine’s great spiritual contribution, beyond that of her daily example, is her Dialogue, dictated during a series of ecstasies over the summer of 1378 before her departure for Rome. Catherine called her Dialogue “the book in which I found some recreation.” When Pope Paul VI declared Catherine a doctor of the Church in 1970, he described her theology as reflective of “the Angelic Doctor in a surprising degree.” The theme of the Dialogue is the soul’s journey to salvation through ever deeper union with the sufferings of Christ, from which flows all of his mercy. “She exalted” Paul VI says, “the redeeming power of the adorable blood of the Son of God, shed on the wood of the cross in expanding love, for the salvation of all generations of mankind.”
After dictating her Dialogue, Catherine left for Rome. The year was 1378. Her Caterinati followed her to the eternal city and lived life much as they had in Siena before she had begun her political adventures. They cared for the poor and destitute, begged for their own needs, copied the saint’s letters, and listened to her counsel.
So severe had been her fasts, by 1380, Catherine could take no food or water at all. Each morning she struggled to walk to Mass at St. Peter’s and remained there all day in prayer at the tomb of the first pope for whose successors she had fought so hard. In her final eight days she was struck with a paralysis from the waist down. When Catherine, at the age of 33, was at last united with her Bridegroom, thousands and thousands of mourners came, and miracle after miracle was attributed to her intercession.
Canonized within a century by her fellow Sienese, Pope Pius II, St. Catherine’s body lies, appropriately, under the main altar in the Dominican church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva in Rome. We can say with confidence that it is nothing short of providential that the site of an ancient temple to the goddess of wisdom is now transformed in Christ as the resting place of one of his wisest saints.

[INTERVIEW] Make Way For Prince Ali! Scott Weinger Visits With ILID
This week, fans across Texas received the devastating news that Dallas Fan Festival is now the latest entertainment victim claimed by Covid. After Fan Expo was postponed (and later canceled), many people held onto the hope that they would have a chance to see some of the scheduled talent appear at Fan Festival in October. Unfortunately, 2020 had different plans...again. One of the actors from this year's Fan Expo guest list was Aladdin and Full(er) House star Scott Weinger. While the magic carpet will no longer be carrying Aladdin to Dallas, we do have some good news. We were able to speak with Scott about his career and Disney memories before the Fan Expo cancellation. Obviously, our exclusive interview can't take the place of getting to meet him in person, but hopefully it will bring a bit of the anticipated Con to your living room. In the meantime, we will be searching for a lamp and wishing to see the return of Scott and Fan Expo Dallas again next spring!
Many fans know you as Steve, others know you as Aladdin. Which of the two do you see yourself more as?
Oh, that’s really funny; it’s hard to say. I’ve been playing both of those characters since I was a teenager and now, I’m an old man. I feel like I identify very much with both of them. It’s hard to imagine that all these years later that they both come up. They’re both a big part of my life, you know? It’s hard to say. Up until two months ago I was literally still playing Steve. Every day I would go into the studio and get a script for the role of Steve. I still go into the studio and record projects for Aladdin, too. But, as far as which character I identify with most? It’s hard to say. I will say that the character of Aladdin has a lot of universal qualities that people can relate to, that I can relate to. He is an underdog aiming high. I feel like anybody who comes to Hollywood to try to make it in showbusiness, whether as a writer or an actor, they’re an underdog. It takes a lot of luck to succeed there, sometimes in the form of a genie and sometimes in other ways like a lucky meeting with somebody or an audition that goes well. When it comes to Aladdin, by the way, I auditioned by mainlining in a tape. I recorded a tape with my mom playing the genie, we mailed it into California, and I got the part! So, that’s a little bit of luck right there.
Definitely! Speaking of genies, if you had three wishes what would they be?
Well, I think I’d have to spend the first one on this whole Coronavirus thing and put it in the book. It’s making life a little bit less fun for a lot of people. Now that I’m a dad and husband, I think most of my wishes would be very boring wishes, like for the health of my family and everything. But I wouldn’t mind a flying car to get around that L.A. traffic!
I get that; Dallas traffic isn’t much better. Looking at your wife’s twitter, it would seem that she has accepted the fact that she is the “wife of Aladdin”. On the other hand, your son is growing older now. Has he started to realize the pros and cons of being the “son of Aladdin”?
I think that he like it and that he thinks it’s pretty cool. We’ve had a lot of really great experiences at Disneyland because of it. He’s much older now, but when he was five or six years old there was an amazing event that took place on the Disney lot when the executives were getting ready to promote Aladdin coming out of the vault and onto Blu ray. We were talking about it and they said, “Is your son excited to see it like that?” I said, “Well, he’s never really seen it before.” Their jaws dropped. They couldn’t believe that my son hadn’t! He was just getting to the right age where he could really enjoy and appreciate it, so they had this amazing idea. They threw a huge party on the Walt Disney Studios lot where they had a huge Arabian Nights themed carnival. All of his friends came and they had a private screening. It was incredible! It was a really cool experience and I think it was a great way to introduce him, letting him know that Dad’s kind of a big deal.
Kudos to Disney on giving your son a mini-premier for him and a great way to add some brownie points to Dad as well. As far as acting goes, you’ve managed to shy away from the spotlight a bit over the past decade or so. Now, with the resurgence of Aladdin and Fuller House, you have been thrown right back in the mix. How has that transition gone for you and your family?
It’s funny you should ask. When my wife and I got together all those years ago, I had left acting behind with the exception of a recording session every once in a while. I was a writer, fully immersed in my new career as a television writer. When this thing came along, it was a big adjustment. From getting stopped on the street by fans to watching me smooch DJ, there were a lot of things to adjust to. Then, my son and his friends all became big fans of the show, so it was on at our house all of the time. It quickly became a big part of our lives. You mentioned my wife’s twitter account. Her favorite thing she always said is, “I married a writer. I didn’t marry an actor.” She learned to love the change. You’ve got to enjoy it and I think she knew how much joy being back in front of the camera and acting again brought me. It was a surprise and she fully got behind it. I do think she’s glad I’m back to writing and that life is getting back to normal, at least a little bit anyway.
It’s awesome that she was so supportive and good with all of the changes. You have done a ton of voicework for Aladdin in various video games like the Kingdom of Hearts series and Disney Infinity. Do you ever play any of those games?
It’s funny; I haven’t been a big videogame person in my life. When I was a kid, I played Nintendo and everything, but I wasn’t a big gamer. Now, my kid is super into it. I really haven’t played any of the Aladdinbased videogames. I know people are obsessed with these games though. When I run into fans, whether it’s out on the street or at one of these conventions, they come up to me and recognize me as Aladdin from Kingdom of Hearts. You can tell that they’re freaking out, but it’s funny because I haven’t had the experience [playing the games].
In regards to experiences, you mentioned a bit of your role behind the camera. You worked as a producer on the television show Galavant. My wife and I loved that show. Please bring it back!
I wish I could! I would love to; thanks for saying that.
If it’s not coming back, could you at least give some insight into how it was supposed to end or what we could have expected?
Did you get a chance to see both seasons? We were lucky enough to do eight [episodes] one year and then we got to do ten the next.
Yes! We were pumped to watch season three and checked nightly for about a month until we learned that it hadn’t been picked up again.
We didn’t really expect it to get a season 2, but when it did, I thought, “Well, now they’ve got to get us a season 3”. I was sad it went away because I loved that experience. I don’t know if they’ll ever bring it back for TV even though it has a very strong and very vocal fan base. Someday I hope they will make it into a Broadway show or something like that. It was such an incredible experience for me to be working on a musical with some of the top talent in our nation. The creator of the show who’s a brilliant guy and one of the nicest guys around, Dan Fogelman, went on to create other shows like This Is Us. It’s funny because they are pretty different. He’s such a versatile and hardworking guy, and he’s always got a whole new project coming up.
Did you have a direction you wanted to send the show? The first one seemed to have a definitive ending. Then, it came back with the second season and left things wide open for the plot of the third season.
Yeah, it’s true. It’s funny because now that we’re talking about this, I don’t remember. I don’t think we settled on anything specific. I think, in a superstitious way, we were afraid to get too excited about any particular direction because we didn’t want to jinx it. It would have been such an amazing thing to do a third season. I think we would have spent a lot of time focusing on the character of King Richard, who emerged into such an interesting character. Then, there’s obviously Isabella. She was great and her singing voice was incredible.
I loved Luke Youngblood on it as well. I actually got to do an interview with him a while back for another Con.
Isn’t he fantastic? The funny thing is, I hadn’t watched all of the Harry Potter movies yet, so I didn’t know how excited I should be about that guy. Now, I’ve seen all of the Harry Potter movies a hundred times and it’s pretty cool that he was in there.
One of my favorite parts about Galavant was how each character developed throughout the seasons.
One of my favorite things about working on the show was when Alan Menken and Glenn Slater, the lyricists, would come into the writer’s room and we would talk about ideas together. One day they called me because I had written a scene that they liked and thought would be great if it was turned into a musical theme. They said, “Do you mind if we take some of your dialogue and turn it into a song?” It was one of the coolest moments of my career. They ended up cutting the scene because it was a little too racy for network television. I said, “How could it have been too racy?” Then, they played the demo… it was racy. Maybe if we were streaming on cable we could have gotten away with it.
Going back to your early career, you’re obviously super invested in Disney. I mean, you spent a majority of your childhood there. What is your favorite Disney movie other than Aladdin?
Oh, man, that’s really tough. Let me think here… Wow, that’s a great question because I have so many that I love. If we are including Pixar, that makes it even more difficult. When I was younger, I loved Tangled, which was also written by Dan Fogelman. That was actually how he got his relationship started with Alan Menken and got Galavant created. The one that I have the greatest memories of, besides Aladdin, was The Little Mermaid. When I was about thirteen years old that movie came out and my best friend, who was obsessed with animation, said to me, “We have to go see this new movie.” I was like, “Dude, that is a girl movie. I don’t want to go see a girl movie.” He said, “Trust me.” We went and it blew my mind; it was just amazing. I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed the movie and also how much my perspective completely changed. I was embarrassed and afraid that we were going to run into friends from school. I felt ashamed for having felt that because it was such a revelation. I was so lucky that I ended up getting to work with a lot of those people. The director of The Little Mermaid also directed Aladdin and, of course, Alan Menken wrote the music for both of those movies.
I completely understand. With two young girls running around me house, The Little Mermaid plays on loop fairly often.
You could name any of those [Disney] movies and they’re all so good. I thought Beauty and the Beast was so great and I love the older classics too. I love Wreck-It-Ralph! It is one of my favorites. There are so many good ones. You know, as a dad, that you have to see all of these movies a hundred times each. The fact that you’re not throwing yourself out of a window speaks out.
You basically grew up on the Disney lot and in the Disney parks. Now that you are older, do you look back and think that you enjoyed it as much as you should have or did it kind of become a bit mundane for you?
You know what? I enjoyed the heck out of it. I was very lucky that I was seventeen years old when Aladdin came out, so I was young enough to enjoy it through the eyes of a kid and old enough to understand how lucky I was. It was the perfect age to experience all of those things. If you added up all the time that I spent down in Florida at Disney World that year, it was over two months that I spent there. It was literally a dream come true. I was at the age where I could enjoy it and also know that I was the luckiest kid ever. It wasn’t lost on me. I never took it for granted, not once.
We will close with this final question about Aladdin. I interviewed Linda Larkin, who played Jasmine in the original movie with you, and asked her about her favorite fan theory regarding the movie. Do you have a favorite?
I was with a bunch of Aladdin people last week and we got into a big metaphysical discussion about the genie. They were talking about how Robin Williams would improvise and make a bunch of contemporary references to pop culture. How is that possible if he is all the way back in Agrabah hundreds of years ago? Someone suggested that he was a time traveler. Another said, “It’s not time travel. He doesn’t exist in time. He exists outside of the rules of time.” I thought that was super cool and very deep. I had just read an Einstein biography and I thought that he would approve of that theory. Even though sometimes people’s theories may be a little crazy or completely off base, they’re not wrong for trying to find a deeper meaning in the movies. The people who make these movies are thoughtful artists and there is definitely a world where people are thinking these things. Because they are so thoughtful, there are things like deeper meanings or stuff that you don’t spot initially baked into these movies. However, I’m sure you have heard the theory that Aladdin had some kind of pornographic message whispered in a scene. To this day, I still have to go around telling people that it didn’t happen. I promise you that it is totally made up. I would have been terrified to say anything like that in a room full of grownups!

• A house is not a home unless it contains food and fire for the mind as well as the body. – Benjamin Franklin • A person who doesn’t breathe deeply reduces the life of his body. If he doesn’t move freely, he restricts the life of his body. If he doesn’t feel fully, he narrows the life of his body. And if his self-expression is constricted, he limits the life of his body. – Alexander Lowen • A shoe is not only a design, but it’s a part of your body language, the way you walk. The way you’re going to move is quite dictated by your shoes. – Christian Louboutin • A small body of determined spirits fired by an unquenchable faith in their mission can alter the course of history. – Mahatma Gandhi • A sound mind in a sound body is a thing to be prayed for. – Juvenal • A sound mind in a sound body, is a short, but full description of a happy state in this World: he that has these two, has little more to wish for; and he that wants either of them, will be little the better for anything else. – John Locke • A strong body makes the mind strong. – Thomas Jefferson • A strong body makes the mind strong. As to the species of exercises, I advise the gun. While this gives moderate exercise to the body, it gives boldness, enterprise and independence to the mind. Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. Let your gun therefore be your constant companion of your walks. – Thomas Jefferson • A woman watches her body uneasily, as though it were an unreliable ally in the battle for love. – Leonard Cohen • All the atoms of our bodies will be blown into space in the disintegration of the solar system, to live on forever as mass or energy. That’s what we should be teaching our children, not fairy tales about angels and seeing grandma in Heaven. – Carolyn Porco • America is also the nameless foreigner, the homeless refugee, the hungry boy begging for a job and the black body dangling on a tree. America is the illiterate immigrant who is ashamed that the world of books and intellectual opportunities are closed to him. We are all that nameless foreigner, that homeless refugee, that hungry boy, that illiterate immigrant and that lynched black body. All of us, from the first Adams to the last Filipino, native born or alien, educated or illiterate-We are America! – Carlos Bulosan • An active mind cannot exist in an inactive body. – George S. Patton • An affectionate disposition not only makes the mind more peaceful and calm, but it affects our body in a positive way too. On the other hand, hatred, jealousy and fear upset our peace of mind, make us agitated and affect our body adversely. Even our body needs peace of mind and is not suited to agitation. This shows that an appreciation for peace of mind is in our blood. – Dalai Lama • An emotion is your body’s reaction to your mind. – Eckhart Tolle • An instructor once told me that when there’s resistence in your body, it’s only because of the resistence in your mind. It’s about getting inside the pose. Being the breath. – Lisa Bonet • Any physical addiction, it doesn’t matter how long they’ve been taking it or how full of it their body is, and addiction, would, between three and thirty days, be completely cleared from the system. Usually closer to three days than thirty days. But it is the emotional craving that must be tended to. – Esther Hicks • As we free our breath through diaphragmatic breathing, we relax our emotions and let go our body tensions. – Gay Hendricks • At the very instant that you think, “I am happy,” a chemical messenger translates your emotion, which has no solid existence whatever in the material world, into a bit of matter so perfectly attuned to your desire that literally every cell in your body learns of your happiness and joins in. – Deepak Chopra

He considered the senses the ‘windows of the soul.’ When sex involves all the senses intensely, it can be like a mystical experence. – Jim Morrison • Bless that which you want. If you see a person with a beautiful home, bless that person and bless that home. If you see a person with a beautiful car, bless that person and bless that car. If you see a person with a loving family, bless that person and bless that family. If you see a person with a beautiful body, bless that person and bless their body. – T. Harv Eker • Bodily decay is gloomy in prospect, but of all human contemplations the most abhorrent is body without mind. – Thomas Jefferson • Body is purified by water. Ego by tears. Intellect is purified by knowledge. And soul is purified with love. – Ali ibn Abi Talib • Body language is essential for an actress, even if you don’t use your body in an athletic way. Just to be free, to use it like your voice. A body can be small and have incredible violence. A body talks. – Anne Parillaud • But truly, women are amazing. Think about it this way: a woman can grow a baby inside her body. Then a woman can deliver the baby through her body. Then, by some miracle, a woman can feed a baby with her body. When you compare that to the male’s contribution to life, it’s kind of embarrassing, really. – Jim Gaffigan • Compassion suits our physical condition, whereas anger, fear and distrust are harmful to our well-being. Therefore, just as we learn the importance of physical hygiene to physical health, to ensure healthy minds, we need to learn some kind of emotional hygiene. – Dalai Lama • Concentration can be cultivated. One can learn to exercise will power, discipline one’s body and train one’s mind. – Anil Ambani • Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things. – Winston Churchill • Crying purifies and cleanses. I once read about a scientific experiment which demonstrated that there are 38 toxic chemicals in a tear of sadness, while only one toxin exists in a tear of joy. As you cry in sadness, fear, or confusion, you cleanse the body and spirit of toxins which cloud the mind and prevent it from accepting the truth. – Iyanla Vanzant • Dance is the hidden langauge of the soul, of the body. – Martha Graham • Deep at the center of my being there is an infinite well of gratitude. I now allow this gratitude to fill my heart, my body, my mind, my consciousness, my very being. This gratitude radiates out from me in all directions, touching everything in my world, and returns to me as more to be grateful for. The more gratitude I feel, the more I am aware that the supply is endless. – Louise Hay • Developing inner values is much like physical exercise. The more we train our abilities, the stronger they become. The difference is that, unlike the body, when it comes to training the mind, there is no limit to how far we can go. – Dalai Lama • Diseases of the soul are more dangerous and more numerous than those of the body. – Marcus Tullius Cicero • Each body has its art. – Gwendolyn Brooks • Each individual has their own unique color, which shines faintly around the contours of their body. Like a halo. Or a backlight. I’m able to see those colors clearly. – Haruki Murakami • Each individual woman’s body demands to be accepted on its own terms. – Gloria Steinem • Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppressions of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day. – Thomas Jefferson • Even when your body does nothing, sin can be active in your mind. When your soul inwardly repulses the evil one’s attack by means of prayer, attention, remembrance of death, godly sorrow and mourning the body, too, takes its share of holiness, having acquired freedom from evil actions. This is what the Lord meant by saying that someone who cleans the outside of the cup has not cleansed it inside, but clean the inside and the whole cup will be clean – Gregory Palamas • Every man casts a shadow; not his body only, but his imperfectly mingled spirit. This is his grief. Let him turn which way he will, it falls opposite to the sun; short at noon, long at eve. Did you never see it? – Henry David Thoreau • Every man is the builder of a temple called his body. – Henry David Thoreau • Every woman wants a man who’ll fall in love with her soul as well as her body. – Rainbow Rowell • Everyone you meet in your life – even total strangers – are already intimately connected to you. The idea that we are all separate and distinct beings is nothing but an illusion. We are all parts of a larger whole, like individual cells in a body. – Steve Pavlina • Everything in the phenomenal universe is straight line and circle. The horizon, our heads, arms, electrons, the oceans, planets and stars. Their principle function is to radiate. The task of the human being is also to radiate. – Alonzo King • Everything you need to know is within you. Listen. Feel. Trust the body’s wisdom. – Dan Millman • Fie, fie upon her! There’s language in her eye, her cheek, her lip, Nay, her foot speaks; her wanton spirits look out At every joint and motive of her body. – William Shakespeare • Fitness – if it came in a bottle, everybody would have a great body. – Cher • For me fashion is an expression of art that is very closely related both to me and to my body. I see it as an expression of identity combined with desire, moods and a cultural setting. – Iris van Herpen • Games played with the ball, and others of that nature, are too violent for the body and stamp no character on the mind. – Thomas Jefferson • Germany has reduced savagery to a science, and this great war for the victorious peace of justice must go on until the German cancer is cut clean out of the world body. – Theodore Roosevelt • God gave me a great body and it’s my duty to take care of my physical temple. – Jean-Claude Van Damme • Good for the body is the work of the body, good for the soul the work of the soul, and good for either the work of the other. – Henry David Thoreau • Hallow the body as a temple to comeliness and sanctify the heart as a sacrifice to love; love recompenses the adorers. – Khalil Gibran • He who has health, has hope; and he who has hope, has everything. – Thomas Carlyle • Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. – B.K.S. Iyengar • Health is a state of complete harmony of the body, mind and spirit. When one is free from physical disabilities and mental distractions, the gates of the soul open. – B.K.S. Iyengar • Health is an announcement of agreement between your body, mind and spirit. Honor your body, keep it in good shape. When you are not healthy, look to see which parts of you disagree. Your body will demonstrate the truth to you. Notice what it is showing you, listen to what it is saying. – Neale Donald Walsch • Health of body and mind is a great blessing, if we can bear it. – John Henry Newman • Her body calculated to a millimeter to suggest a bud yet guarantee a flower. – F. Scott Fitzgerald • I acknowledge the privilege of being alive in a human body at this moment, endowed with senses, memories, emotions, thoughts, and the space of mind in its wisdom aspect. – Alex Grey • I am not this body. I am in this body, and this is part of my incarnation and I honor it but that isn’t who I am. – Ram Dass • I am sincerely trying now to create a dance technique based entirely upon corrective exercises, created with a knowledge of human anatomy; a technique which will correct physical faults and prepare a dancer for any type of dancing he may wish to follow; a technique having all the basic movements which govern the actions of the body; combined with a knowledge of the origin of movement and a sense of artistic design. – Lester Horton • I definitely have body issues, but everybody does. When you come to the realization that everybody does that – even the people that I consider flawless – then you can start to live with the way you are. I’ve read interviews with some of the most beautiful women who have insecurities. And you look at them and you’re like, ‘How do you have? Name one thing wrong with yourself,’ and they could name a handful. – Taylor Swift • I finally realized that being grateful to my body was key to giving more love to myself. – Oprah Winfrey • I know a lot of athletes and models are written off as just bodies. I never felt used for my body. – Arnold Schwarzenegger • I like my body when it is with your body. It is so quite new a thing. Muscles better and nerves more. – e. e. cummings • I listen with love to my body’s messages. – Louise Hay • I live in company with a body, a silent companion, exacting and eternal. – Eugene Delacroix • I mopped the floor with my hairThe reason I’m so interested in taking my body to those extreme places is that that’s a place where I learn, where I feel most in my body. I’m really interested in the repetition, the discipline, and what happens to me psychologically when I put my body to that extreme place. – Janine Antoni • I see dance being used as communication between body and soul, to express what it too deep to find for words. – Ruth St. Denis • I see my body as an instrument, rather than an ornament. – Alanis Morissette • I sing the body electric. – Walt Whitman • I speak two languages, Body and English. – Mae West • I used to think that the brain was the most wonderful organ in my body. Who owns my life? – Sue Rodriguez • If I read a book and it makes my whole body so cold no fire can ever warm me, I know that is poetry. – Emily Dickinson • If the body be feeble, the mind will not be strong. – Thomas Jefferson • If the mind, that rules the body, ever so far forgets itself as to trample on its slave, the slave is never generous enough to forgive the injury, but will rise and smite the oppressor. – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow • If the present Congress errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send one hundred and fifty lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, and talk by the hour? – Thomas Jefferson • If these United States can be called a body, then Kentucky can be called its heart. – Jesse Stuart • If you are hurt, whether in mind or body, don’t nurse your bruises. Get up, and light-heartedly, courageously, good-temperedly, get ready for the next encounter. – Emily Post • If you consciously let your body take care of you, it will become your greatest ally and trusted partner. – Deepak Chopra • If you dance with your heart, your body will follow. – Mia Michaels • If you don’t think your anxiety, depression, sadness and stress impact your physical health, think again. All of these emotions trigger chemical reactions in your body, which can lead to inflammation and a weakened immune system. Learn how to cope, sweet friend. There will always be dark days. – Kris Carr • If you want to find the answers to the Big Questions about your soul, you’d best begin with the Little Answers about your body. – George A. Sheehan • I’m never going to starve myself for a part. I don’t want little girls to be like, ‘Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I’m going to skip dinner.’ That’s something I was really conscious of during training, when you’re trying to get your body to look exactly right. I was trying to get my body to look fit and strong-not thin and underfed. – Jennifer Lawrence • I’m not much for talking. You know what I do. The mind that aims at a select militia, must be influenced by a truly anti-republican principle; and when we see many men disposed to practice upon it, whenever they can prevail, no wonder true republicans are for carefully guarding against it. – Richard Henry Lee • Whether I was in my body or out of my body as I wrote it I know not.

– T. The Powerful Play Goes On
(The sermon I’m doing in like 2 hours. Title inspired by Walt Whitman’s poem, O Me! O Life! Thanks to @wolves-will-come for going over it for me. <3)
John 1:1-5
Jeremiah 29:11
Mark 4:35-41
Stories are funny things. They all have the same basic structure. You have a beginning. Sometimes the beginning is light and happy and everything seems great until something horrible has happened to change everything. People might hope and pray for things to go back to the way things used to be, the heroes might set hoping to do exactly that.
Sometimes the horrible thing has already happened and people in the story are hoping and praying that it just doesn’t get worse than it already is. Some stories start with people so mired in darkness that they have forgotten what it was like to stand in the sun. Heroes in these stories might set out to bring an end to whatever is plaguing their people to bring a new beginning to their world, even if they don’t know what that looks like.
But all stories, whether good or bad, start somewhere. Someone had to speak words into being, weave them together and make a world, a people. In the Bible, we have a few different accounts of how everything began. Genesis says that the Spirit of God hovered over the surface of the waters, that God spoke all of creation into being. Genesis chapter 2 gives an alternate version of the creation story and skips everything in favor of showing how God created humanity.
My personal favorite, though, is John’s account. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” I like this one because, as a writer, I like to believe that God had a plan with the very first words spoken, the ones that got the wheels rolling.
Stories are funny things in that they mirror our lived experiences, either what we are currently living through or what we would like to experience. I think that’s why Jesus so often chooses to tell people things with parables. Stories make things relatable. It can be difficult and mind-boggling to try and make sense of divine truths when all you have to work with is your own mind, your own imagination. Having a story explain something in little bits and pieces makes it easier to understand what God is getting at.
The best thing about stories, of course, is the middle. Beginnings can be difficult. You might see glimpses of something starting, of a plot forming that will surely spell doom for the main character. Endings can be satisfying, the chance to see how everything turns out, if the people who make it to the end have their chance at happiness when the crisis is resolved. That is, after all, why we read or listen to stories, to see the problems that have plagued us along with the characters for so long resolved.
But for me, I think my favorite part of any story is the middle. Without the middle, we don’t know what makes the ending satisfying and the beginning seems pointless. Storms happen in the middle, the trials that people endure that prepare them for what is to come, the tests that characters need to endure if they are to succeed in their main goal.
I like to think that Jesus’s disciples had to endure the storms that Jesus made them sail through at night so often in the Bible in order to give them chances to grow. Because the storms happen in the middle of the story and what they don’t know yet is that there’s worse coming. They don’t know yet that Jesus will die because the powers that be will come to see him as a nuisance and a threat. They know that Jesus preaches that the Kingdom of God is coming to bring salvation to the poor. The rest is unknown to them.
I wonder sometimes if the disciples ever thought back to the times when Jesus calmed the storm and wished that the rest of life’s worries could be so easily quelled. I wonder if any of them ever felt that it might be nice if God told them a little about what was going on. I wonder if Elijah ever wondered what God was thinking when he was on the run from Jezebel, if Moses questioned why God led them to the Red Sea, or if any of the other prophets in the Bible wondered what God was waiting for. In the deep stillness of the night, did they wonder when dawn was coming?
Perhaps it’s why they decided to write the stories down later. To help people remember, so they would have faith later during the times when they were wondering if they would be killed or jailed for their faith. I wonder what stories they would tell if they knew how far into the future the story of Jesus would go and how much it would change.
The temptation that arises in the middle of a story and in the middle of life is to give in to the feeling that there is no hope. That there is no light at the end of the tunnel, that the darkness goes on and on and on because how could there possibly be a good ending to the story when so much suffering exists?
This sentiment is expressed by a Hobbit named Samwise in the Lord of the Rings movies. But Sam also says that the a new day will come and when it does it will shine out all the clearer to chase away the darkness. He also says that the reason people like him and Frodo and their friends do what they do is because there is good and light in the world that is worth preserving.
Sometimes we get hints of light, like fireflies dancing across the waves or in the branches of the trees in the middle of the night. Sometimes it shines down like the moon, illuminating the way so that we can get to the next place where we can take shelter. And sometimes the light breaks through the clouds all at once and we see with nearly perfect clarity the reason why we strive towards goodness and peace in the world.
In this thing we call life, this messy, unpredictable, chaotic, glorious life, we do not have all the answers. We can’t look ahead and know exactly what’s going to happen, though that would be really convenient at times. Surprises happen and sometimes they’re not what we were expecting or hoping for. Tragedies unfurl. Pitfalls slow us down. Roadblocks appear in our path. Sometimes the path we walk ends and we have to turn around and go another way. Sometimes the belief that God has a plan for us is less a comfort and more of a frustration because wouldn’t it be great if we could be in on what that plan is?
It’s easy to focus on the overwhelming darkness, the weight and worries of the world surrounding us to the point that we feel lost. We are, after all, living life in the middle of the story rather than at the beginning or the end. How many of us wish that we could go back to the times when we were children and we didn’t have the worries or concerns we accumulated in life, or look ahead to when we retire and relax when our lives won’t be quite as stressful as they are now?
But we live in the middle of the story. Not just in our stories, our lives, but in the middle of God’s story. The beginning is done. The ending is still somewhere on the horizon. So here we are squarely in the middle, but just as stories all end, I believe that a resolution is coming someday, when humanity will lay down its burdens, having achieved the peace in the world that God intended.
In the movie, Dead Poets Society, Robin Williams’ character, Mr. Keating, shares a poem by Walt Whitman with his class near the beginning.
Oh me! Oh life! of the questions of these recurring,
Of the endless trains of the faithless, of cities fill’d with the foolish,
Of myself forever reproaching myself, (for who more foolish than I, and who more faithless?)
Of eyes that vainly crave the light, of the objects mean, of the struggle ever renew’d,
Of the poor results of all, of the plodding and sordid crowds I see around me,
Of the empty and useless years of the rest, with the rest me intertwined,
The question, O me! so sad, recurring—What good amid these, O me, O life?
Answer.
That you are here—that life exists and identity,
That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.
The story is not yet complete and we here today, with whatever time we have in this life, can choose to manifest in the world the peace, love, healing, joy, and light we wish to see. And we can have hope in the Divine Light of the universe. No matter how difficult life becomes, no matter how dark the world seems, a light is shining and the darkness shall not overcome it.
Glory be to the Creator, the Christ Spirit, the Light of the Universe. As it was in the beginning, is now, and forever shall be, world without end, life everlasting. Amen.

Chapter 13
Here is Edward Bear, coming downstairs now, bump, bump, bump, on the back of his head, behind Mary. It is, as far as he knows, the only way of coming downstairs, but sometimes he feels that there is really another way, if only he could stop bumping for a moment and think of it. And then he feels that perhaps there isn’t. Anyhow, here he is at the bottom, and ready to be introduced to you. Winnie the Pooh.
Sometimes Winnie the Pooh likes a game of some sort when he comes downstairs, and sometimes he likes to sit quietly and listen to a story. This evening—
“What about an adventure?” said Mary.
“What about an adventure?” I said.
“I want to go on an adventure with Winnie the Pooh,” said Mary. “A fun kind of one, where I can be the hero!”
Mary was young now, and her adventures were always easy to create. An adventure could be a trip to the moon and back or a voyage under the sea. Heroes never did more than explore and perhaps help other people. I always tried to find a world where she could help other people, but it was rare when she ever took the lesson to heart.
“I suppose I could,” said I. “What kind of world would you like today?”
“I want to visit where Winnie the Pooh lives,” said Mary.
“And what kind of adventures does Winnie the Pooh like?” said I.
“He likes stories about himself. Because he’s that sort of bear.”
“Oh, I see.”
“So could you very sweetly send me to the Hundred Acre Wood world?”
“I shall try.”
So I tried.
Once upon a time a long time ago, quite a bit longer now but at the time it was only last Friday, Winnie the Pooh lived all by himself in the Hundred Acre Woods. One day, when he was out walking in the middle of these woods, he came across a very large oak tree, and from the top was a loud buzzing noise.
Winnie the Pooh sat at the foot of the tree, and began to think. He said to himself “That is not a buzzing noise you hear every day. The only reason I would think you would make a buzzing noise would be because you are a bee. So there must be bees at the top of this tree. And the only reason to be a bee is to make honey.”
He stood up. “The only reason to make honey, is for me to eat it.”
So he began to climb the tree. He climbed, and he climbed, and he climbed, and he climbed and he sang a little song to himself. Then he climbed some more, and climbed, and climbed, and climbed and sang another song to himself. Then he climbed a little more…and climbed a little more…and he was beginning to grow tired so he switched his song to a Complaining Song. He was nearly and if he just made it onto that branch…
CRACK!
He fell into the gorse-bush, and the first person he thought of was Mary. So he went round to his friend Mary, who lived behind a green door in another part of the forest.
“Good morning, Mary,” he said.
“Good morning, Winnie-ther-Pooh,” she said.
“I was just wondering if you had anything such as a balloon on you?”
(“A balloon?” said Mary at the time this was being told.
“What else do you suggest would work?” I asked.
“A broom,” She said, for she did not realize the difference between the brooms of plastic and fiber bought in supermarkets and brooms of wood and magic bought by witches. “We can fly up there.”
It was important to teach Mary to be resourceful. It was always easier to use the world to her advantage, rather than bring in all of her supplies and damage it. Long after she stopped relying on me to tell her stories, she needed to be resourceful.
“Then we shall use a broom,” said I, and continued.)
“A broom,” said Mary. “We can fly up there.”
“That is a grand idea,” said Pooh “But how do you suppose we fool the bees?”
“Do you think we can fool the bees?” Mary asked.
“I’m not sure. It is hard to tell with bees,” said Pooh. “But I would rather the bees think that I am a part of the sky, or a part of the trees, so they do not try to sting me.”
Well, they both went out with the broom, and you took your staff with you, just in case, as you always do, and Winnie-the-Pooh went to a very muddy place, and rolled and rolled until he was black all over. And then they both hopped onto the broom and rose into the sky and stayed there.
“Hooray!” she shouted.
“Isn’t this fine!” shouted he. “What do I look like?”
“You look like a Bear on a broom,” Mary said.
“Not,” said Pooh, “—not like a small black cloud in a blue sky?”
“Not very much.”
“Ah, well, you can never tell with bees.”
After a little while Pooh spoke again.
“I think the bees suspect something!”
“What sort of thing?”
“I don’t know. But something tells me that they’re suspicious!”
“Perhaps they think that you’re after their honey.”
“It may be that. You can never tell with bees.”
There was another little pause before Pooh thought up of a cloud song to fool the bees with. The bees were still buzzing as suspiciously as ever. Some of them, indeed, left their nest and flew all round the cloud as he began the second verse of this song, and one bee sat down on the nose of the cloud and then got back up again.
“Mary-ow,” said the cloud.
“Yes?”
“I have just been thinking, and I have come to the conclusion that these are the wrong sort of bees.”
“Are they?”
“Yes. And it stands to reason that they would be making the wrong sort of honey.”
“Would they?”
“Yes. So I think we shall go down.”
So Mary landed. It was a rough kind of landing because it was a rough kind of flying, and for weeks afterwards they were sore and still felt the wind on their backs.
And I think—but I am not sure—that that is why he was always called Pooh.
“Is that the end of the story?” asked Mary.
“That’s the end of that one. There are others.”
“About Pooh and me?”
“And Piglet and Rabbit and all of you. You may return to that world whenever you wish.”
Mary gave a deep sigh, picked her Bear up by the leg, and walked off to the door, trailing Pooh behind him. And in a moment I heard Winnie-the-Pooh---bump, bump, bump—going up the stairs behind her.
And there were other stories. There were other worlds that Mary visited and other people that she helped.
But there was one day when she stopped. She was still young then, and perhaps she was beginning to realize the consequences of her actions. But she was growing older, and life has a way of taking over your childhood when you least expect it. Her days became full of schoolwork and business, and there was little time for rolling in the mud and flying.
Then there was a day when she left for another world and did not return for a very long time.
She never did find whatever she was looking for that time. She went through so many worlds and so many outcomes that I do not think she truly knows where she is anymore, or where she belongs. I wish there was more I could do to help her. The world can be a cruel place, no matter which world you end up in. But there is so much light and hope and determination. There are so many small joys that make life bearable. There are so many adventures that can still be had, if you are able to find them.
When she decided to settle in one world she was older, if not by physical age. She was an Adult now. She took the things that mattered to her, Edward Bear and myself included, and left on her own great adventure.
I hope she’s happy, wherever she goes.
