honestly your love for reading and books is so cute! i'm in my 20s and i'm ashamed to admit that i haven't really read many books in my life. i always want to start but sometimes things get in the way, but most of the time i just have zero motivation. i don't know why but books just don't appeal to me and i feel so bad about it. i major in psychology and i have so many books but i don't read even them. can you share a guide or any personal advice for me? it would mean a lot. thank you! <3
ahh!! thank you!! this is so sweet nonnie 💗
first, don’t be ashamed about the fact that you haven’t read many books. life can get it the way and it’s totally understandable. please don’t ever feel ashamed about it!! i completely understand the lack of motivation issue. i always start reading five books at a time and never end up finishing them. so i get it.
here are some tips that helped me when i was in a reading slump and didn’t feel like picking up a book:
- start reading a book that seems interesting to you and if you, for one reason or another, lose interest and don’t vibe with it, put it down. if you feel like your reading time has suddenly become a chore, then you should probably stop reading for a while and pick up another book whenever you’re ready to do so
- try to cut out a little bit of time everyday to read. recently, i’ve been loving reading while having breakfast. i wake up early, the house is really quiet, and i like to spend my mornings with a book by my side while i eat some oatmeal. but that’s me. whatever time and place you find comfortable - at night or on the bus or at a library. but don’t feel like you have to read every single day. you can skip as many days (or months) as you want
- try different genres until you find your “thing”. i don’t think classics are the best starting point because if you end up hating the book you’ve chosen, you’ll probably end up avoiding classics all together. but that’s just me rambling. whatever genre you feel attracted to, try it. i recently got into fantasy (well, i’ve read one book jsjdj) but i can’t wait to read more!!
- start with small and easy-to-read books that don’t feel intimidating.. whenever i’m in a slump, i like to go back to my comfort genre which is mysteries. i love me some good agatha christie, especially if i’m feeling down. romantic comedies are really helpful too: they are usually short and sweet and they’re, almost all of the time, an enjoyable read.
- for motivation, i found that talking with people about books is really helpful? reading can be a social activity too - you can go to a library and join a book club. or, if you’re an introvert like me, you can talk about books with your friends! i have a book club with my best friend (it’s just her and i jsjsjd) but i found that hearing about her recent favorites makes me want to read them too!! this way you can get book recommendations & find new genres to read. also, you can lend each other books (i always do this!) and talk about them whenever you meet up. i also like to watch, whenever i have time, book tube videos - they’re really helpful, especially if you want to dive into a new genre you know nothing about. i don’t have instagram, but i think there are some book exchange projects you can join if you want
that’s all i have to say for now.. but if you have any other questions, send them in please. i hope this helps 💕💕
