I noticed people creating such descriptions on Tumblr, I assumed that I could do the same so that the people who visit my blog would be less confused about what they're seeing here. After all, I'm really open to communication, but it's probably better if you know what to expect from me:)

My taste in music is very vast and it'll be difficult to limit it to one genre or a group of artists, but I can easily name some of the most influential performers for me: Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Leonard Cohen, Dusty Springfield, Judy Garland, Fleetwood Mac, Czesław Niemen, Marek Grechuta, Magda Umer, Tori Amos, Volodymyr Ivasyuk, Okean Elzy, Skryabin, Shocking Blue..

Chapter 4: Hyvää Joulua

We arrived on December 21, which was just a day before the Winter Solstice, the year’s longest night. And winter nights are even longer in Finland. The sun only rose up around 9 and by 15 it got dark. It’s interesting how it moves in the sky too. It rises about 30% above the horizon, goes “nope!” and goes down again.

We stayed at the house of my mother’s Ukrainian friend, or rather, her Finn husband, Markku. He lives far from civilization, out on a hill among fields. There’s a rather notable village that’s just 5 minutes’ drive from there, [more on that later], but the house feels very secluded in winter.

Our friend is named Oksana, but in Finland everyone calls her Oona, which is supposedly a local equivalent. Oksana lived in Bucha but thankfully left the country just as the war started. She worked in Finland and met this nice local man. He’s 55, a mechanic who works at a sawmill. He used to live near Helsinki but he hated the city so he moved out into the wild. He’s tall but has a heart of a child. She’s small, 53 but looks 40 at most, a single mother who lost her parents early and had a very tough life. She looks like a kid next to him. They got married within a few months. They take good care of each other.

The next day, we drove to the city. Oksana had a doctor’s appointment and we had to go officiate our visit. Markku dropped her off at the hospital first and took us to the police department. It was a bit nerve-wrecking as we weren’t sure what to expect. I was preparing myself for some degree of humiliation, ready to tell my story to justify them welcoming us and giving us home. There was no humiliation and no hard questions asked. The staff were calm and friendly. When we were done, the young handsome officer said “Dyakuyu!” It felt very misdirected.

We then had to go to the reception centre to fill out all the forms and applications regarding our stay. We knew there shouldn’t be any issues but it was still stressful and confusing. The staff were friendly and almost seemed sorry they couldn’t do more for us. Well, the Finnish staff at least. The few Ukrainians working there always look mildly annoyed. And frankly, I can now understand why.

We took care of all our stuff and were immediately given the keys to our apartment. We went there, dropped off the bags and then left again. We were supposed to pick up Oksana afterwards but things didn’t go as planned. It was supposed to be a checkup, because her blood pressure was getting too high. Turned out 3 of her heart arteries were partly blocked and needed to be fixed. What’s more, they were ready to operate her immediately.

The hospital itself is a large regional medical complex, very spacious and modern. Cozy even, for a hospital. There are pictures on the walls that make it look like a museum. There is also a nice little cafeteria for staff and visitors where we dined. Not to mention the kind of technologies they use. They basically cleared and repaired the arteries without cutting up the chest while watching the process through some kind of 3D imaging.

The surgery went fine but they only cleared one artery, so two more surgeries were needed. But that day, she was home by evening. The bill came in later. She owed them a hefty sum of 42e.

Oksana wasn’t feeling great in the following days and we didn’t either. The stress of the trip was heavy and for days I had a vertigo and a headache. We weren’t going to stay at Markku’s place for a whole week but they insisted we stayed for Christmas and it was an hour-long ride to the city, which was hard on them, so we relented.

I am very unreligious but Christmas is all about traditions so I was curious so see how it was celebrated here. I have to say if there’s one place that’s perfect to spend Christmas in, it’s Finland. Finland on Christmas looks like a place from a Coca-Cola commercial. It’s like they made a set to film it and then forgotten all about it. Small quaint houses covered in snow, perfect pine trees and illumination, it all makes one’s heart warm.

There wasn’t a big celebration, however. Markku brought in a tree and we decorated it. We ate some of the traditional foods, including a number of gooey purees, made from sweet potatoes, beetroots, and carrot. Not a fan. On Christmas eve, we went to a cemetery to put candles. It was already dark and a very solemn sight.

Markku shares the house with his mother who is the head of the family. Around Christmas, many members of the family came to their house to have a nice little gathering. It was a good chance to observe Finns in their natural habitat.

About 15 people came, mostly women. There was no alcohol and no feast, as one would expect, just a few tables set up with tea, coffee and snacks everyone brought in. People just grabbed drinks and snacks and went to hang out wherever they wanted with whoever they wanted. Nobody was dressed up. Literally just regular comfy clothes and no make-up. The only festive elements were a few cutesy headbands with reindeer antlers. Worm by older women. It was a very quiet evening with a family catching up, exchanging sentimental gifts and singing a beautiful song at the end.

A few members tried to talk to me and some expressed their sadness at the things going on in my homeland. But most politely ignored us. Which was fine, I suppose. It was their day and we were just spectators. It didn’t feel right to ruin the innocence of this day. Who know how long they can stay in it?

I am currently learning German and Ukrainian. I play the cello (I would say that I'm pretty decent at it). I want to join the paratroopers soon and maybe get a doctorate degree in the medical field. I like writing books, reading, and drawing. I am very interested in history, mainly the 20th century. I also know how to cross-country ski and love the winter.

My MBTI type if I remember correctly is INTJ. I love procrastinating and do well under a lot of pressure. I'm also very stubborn and awkward with talking to people so I don't have many close friends. For some reason, I have a sort of knack for doing things well, even if it's the first time I've tried it and that might be because I listen really closely to stuff to make sure I'm doing everything correctly. I need a straightforward path and a list of things I should do to get something done.

I have depression, anxiety and maybe (I say maybe because it's undiagnosed) maladaptive daydreaming, which basically means I daydream too much that it's a problem. Any small words of affection or reassurance sends me through the roof and makes me happy for the rest of the day (idk why). I also get angry very quickly and forget things quickly.

I am converting to Judaism so that’s cool. My sense of clothing style is just me pretending I’m in the military, pleather jackets, heavy jackets that are either camo or dark green, aviator sunglasses, a lot of neutral colours, fancy dress shirts/blouses, combat boots (which I currently do not own so just tennis shoes or winter boots), I have a few BoB pins which I have created on my own :) I like wearing t-shirts in winter under my jacket just because. The t-shirts usually have designs like aeroplanes, space, and museum shirts. I also have a collection of shirts from places I’ve never been cause I think it’s hilarious. I do a lot of things just cuz I think they’re funny.

I keep a lot of stuff in my pockets “just in case”. I impulse buy, which is a big insecurity of mine. People intimidate me easily so I usually wait to get approached to start a conversation. I like watching adventure shows like extinct or alive or expedition unknown.

I would say that I have a very dark sense of humour and am almost always sarcastic when talking to my friends (also I love irony). I have an interesting music taste, most any song I listen to goes onto my liked songs on Spotify heh. I sometimes slip into a British accent or one that isn’t mine at all. I also tend to get myself injured at least once daily and now it’s a running joke with my friends.

I don’t really know much about romance, but I try. I don’t like that much physical affection but I do like praise, as I said before, and gifts. I love giving gifts to people.

You don’t really realize how many things you need in your daily life until you have to start anew. Mops and can openers, brushes and scissors, kettles and curtains, - there are so many things you don’t think about but the absence of which makes life very uncomfortable. So we took to the flea markets and consignment shops. We were building our life from the ground up. But we had to still consider the fact that we could be moved any time so we shouldn’t get anything big or costly. Make it cozier but don’t get too attached. From now on, you don’t have a home.

About a week into the year, another young woman moved in. Tetiana is from the Western Ukraine, though she spent the past 10 years working in Poland. At first, I wasn’t sure if we would get along. She seemed a little chaotic, very alert and a kind of territorial. But soon I realized it was just the result of her life experience. She’s working class and spent years working odd jobs, in factories and cleaning, often having to share rooms with very questionable people. She got fucked over a lot so her apprehension became very understandable. Once she felt she was in company of decent friendly people, she relaxed and showed a very different side. She’s not educated, but very curious and hard-working and also quite childlike when you get to know her. She proved to be an excellent cohabitant.

Tetiana also knows how to grip life by the balls so she gets around quickly. There was a middle-aged Ukrainian man living on the first floor. We soon learned his name was Uncle Sasha and many people would come and ask about him. We didn’t know him but it wasn’t hard to connect the dots. Uncle Sasha knows things and how to get things. Soon though he was moving out because his children moved and the apartment was considered too big for him and his wife. He had to clear out the apartment, including furniture. This is how we got an old but comfy sofa and a bunch of teen boy clothes. Our standard of living took off.

It took some time to get used to our new arrangement but after a while, the 4 of us formed a loose but stable bond, keeping a healthy distance. We were always very polite and supportive to each other. We often shared meals and occasionally drinks. We gave each other space when he felt someone needed it. It really worked.

Sharing an apartment and a life with strangers… It’s not something I would ever choose but it was nice to live through. It’s amazing how in such a short time you can develop a rather close companionship. It felt like a blessing.

One day I had a talk with one of the social workers from the reception center who came over to install new locks. Not many of them speak English well so I took the opportunity. She was incredibly nice and kind. We had a warm earnest talk and she told me they were there to do everything they could to make us feel at home and give us everything we need. I told her I would love to give back in some way and that I’m doing my best to learn. She said I could take my time, there was no rush. I nearly cried. I asked her for a hug before she left. And I am not a hugger. At all.

Once we finally got our IDs and prepaid cards, my mind was finally somewhat at ease. There was some sort of stability.

But of course, this was just another illusion and it made the upcoming reality check even harder.

I just wanted to warn you, that post is propaganda that's going to get innocent russian civilians killed.

What's happening in Ukraine is pure evil, but the people soliders beign forced to carry it out are innocent conscripted children (like 99% f them are drafted 19-year-olds).

Putin and his cabinet are the evil ones, not some amorphous entity that is "russia"

I'm extremely conflict-averse and considered just not answering this, but in general I understand and even to some degree agree with the sentiment, so I wanted to touch on why I reblogged the particular post in question, especially when I've avoided other posts about the topic.

Mainly, I don't believe it can be appropriately categorized as propaganda. I think that it features generally trustworthy sources and factually-based analyses of the situation which do not show Russian forces in a positive light. It isn't propaganda to say that Russian soldiers killed civilians and left their bodies in the streets in Bucha, nor is it propaganda to describe the bombing of the maternity hospital in Mariupol. Those are the facts on the ground, they are just ones that might be difficult to hear and which favor the narrative of one side - that doesn't mean that they are false or purposefully manipulative.

I have significant sympathy for those soldiers who have been unwillingly drawn into the conflict and are truly disgusted by what they see. I don't envy them, or know what I would do in their place. I hope it would not be to participate in or stand by during the commission of what can comfortably be categorized as war crimes, at which point the descriptor "innocent conscripted children" becomes harder to apply.

To be honest, my own urge to use youth as excuse or context is undercut by history (19-year-old conscripts have committed acts of horrific violence in all sorts of conflict zones, and their age does not erase that), and the fact that the average age of Russian soldiers is estimated at 20-25, meaning that many if not most of those who are involved in attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are young people who were drafted into the military. "They're young and didn't choose to be there" and "they're perpetrating or culpable in the perpetration of violence and abuse contrary to the rules of war" are concepts that can and do exist simultaneously.

Per the Human Rights Watch report that came out over the weekend, a woman who was raped in Kharkiv was told by the soldier who raped her "that he was Russian, that his name was [name withheld] and that he was 20. He said that [she] reminded him of a girl he went to school with." The fact that this soldier would almost certainly never have tried to invade Ukraine without the agenda of Putin and the larger Russian military apparatus does not minimize or justify his specific conduct and choices during the invasion, just as the fact of his age does not. I agree that the leaders hold the largest share of the blame for the situation and that no country or institution is a monolith, but by that token, the actions of the individual matter, and quite a lot of the actions of quite a lot of individuals in this situation have not reflected an overall belief in the basic human rights of Ukrainians.

Look, there's a lot to talk about around this issue, including

Russia's extremely aggressive propaganda system (which as of 2 days ago was still trying to calmly lead readers into believing that any Ukrainian who pushes back against Russian occupation has been brainwashed into Nazism, therefore rationalizing the destruction of Ukraine as a nation, its control by Russia for a process of "denazification", and the murder of leaders and civilians alike i.e. genocide; full translation of article here) and the difficulty of getting reliable and independent news there

Russia's general conduct as a modern political/military actor (including in Georgia, Crimea, and Syria)

recent high approval numbers from the Russian civilian population for both the war and Putin himself (alongside the remaining questions about accurate polling and information-gathering in Russia)

reports of Ukrainian forces killing Russian POWs, contrary to the Geneva Conventions, of which Ukraine is a signatory

the ethics, efficacy, and purpose of cultural boycotts, which I generally don't agree with in this instance, and the question of what is included in cultural legacy

which if any member of the international community can assign blame from a place of blamelessness, and whether that matters

the comparison of harm to Russian civilians via sanctions/boycotts which have already gone into effect, versus harm from potential military action against them (which, to be honest, I haven't seen seriously discussed anywhere; even calls for US/EU/NATO boots on the ground/military hardware seem to focus on defense of Ukraine rather than counterattacks on Russian territory), versus the harm of current military action against Ukrainian civilians

Russian/Soviet history, particularly within the 20th and 21st centuries, and especially as that overlaps with Ukraine

We might never agree on the nuances or even broad swathes of all of this, but there's some background as to my thinking.
