I know for a fact I am no longer safe in one of my discord servers and the physical community it represents. This is a community of people that I see twice a year and in the past have created fantastic memories and moments with. I know that even though I will be at the larger event everyone in that particular server is at, I will not be attending any of the get togethers or parties. In our international politics channel there are several people who openly post antisemitic conspiracies and rhetoric. They've only thinly veiled their violent hatred of Jews through the now accepted veneer of "anti-Zionism". In fact, they often post memes or political comics from well known antisemites that are absolutely dripping blood libel and antisemitic conspiracy, but under the guise of "anti-Zionism" or "criticism of Israel". Every single one of them posting this type of stuff has posted "Punch a Nazi" memes on the server and on their personal social media since the beginning of this month. They do not see the bitter irony of posting literal antisemitic memes and cartoons while posting that they'll fight Nazis. The other goyim of the server have only ever posted anti-Israel and antisemitic articles, not understanding that they were pushing Hamas propaganda, and only myself and the three other Jewish members of this 150+ person server have pushed back. When we do push back it goes silent, there's no apology or understanding, and then they're back at it a few days later.

Nothing is ever posted about the hostages, violence against Jews globally, or the like. Not a single thing about the Bibas family or Lifshitz.

But if it's something they can attack Israel and the Jews for? You be they'll post it in the next few days. And I hate it. I hate that what I thought was my nerdy con family is in fact rife with Leftist progressives who believe they're not antisemites and would "Punch a Nazi" are actually repeating antisemitic Soviet Era and Hamas propaganda verbatim and believing it. And here's the thing, all of us are professionals in some capacity or another that have been active in Leftist and progressive spaces for years, if not decades. We share resources, action plans, and how we go about supporting our local and national communities. We cross post and tag each other about things that may be outside of our respective circle but relevant to what we're fighting for. We come up with new ideas and talk about building up our communities, providing resources, and doing everything we can to remain safe while advocating. And yet... out of the 150+ members on the server with whom I've worked with, shared drinks with, cried with, and everything in between...only the three other Jews have offered any sort of comfort to one another. We've simply watched from the sidelines as this community drowns itself in Hamas's propaganda and quote things from the literal 1988 charter calling for our extermination. I know I won't go to any private events anymore with these people because I cannot trust them. I will continue to offer my expertise and years of experience though. I truly believe that the work we have done and can do for groups that are being targeted by the Trump admin is beneficial. I will always continue to help and advocate for them, even groups I don't belong to or have only the barest of connections to.

But trust?

Semi rant

So I wanted to talk about how I've seen alot of ppl labeling cirrus now hold your pitch forks cause I know some will say well you like prapai so not shocking you will be okay with this. Well first off I know that alot of ppl place their disdain on cirrus or someone like prapai because they hate the person who even made these characters. And a lot of ppl already have their preconceptions regarding mame. And it's one thing to be critical about her shows, but then, on the other side, I see just about balant disrespect. Cause their is seemingly always this constant policing moralitly of her shows. So if their is a "bad" character, suddenly you are now a bad person for writing this and trying to sway the audience, or you're a bad person for just watching the show! And that's why it's easy for some ppl to hate cirrus or prapai, but to focus on cir he is a character that is shaped by his trauma which was very intense and very insane psychologically physically and emotional abuse from his mother. And in doing so was abandoned by his father who basically chose his brother over him he was sheltered heavily in all aspects of his life from his mother. She made it very clear to him that his life is not his to begin with never has and will be. It's no wonder why he would have such deep fear of his loved ones being harmed he wouldn't want anyone to get mixed up in the life that he hates so much for himself. But yet some people will think that this all shouldn't shape his personality in any way and how he chooses to conduct himself. When really this should be very understanding as to why he is acting the way that he is. It's as if cir needs to be just a black and white person no grayness at all to him. Cir doesn't know what love is and yet people kind of expect him to go about it in a non on problematic way. Him stalking phu is a big issue and trauma shouldn't excuse someone's bad behavior true. But the way I teach some people talk about him it's like as if they are just labeling him to just being a soccer and that is it. It's as if your saying that the victims who have traumatic situations and any accessible abuse need to be a quote unquote perfect victim. We're seeing him literally operating on the very little knowledge he has about love he doesn't know much all he knows is that he deeply loves and it's really committed to poo. And he is doing everything in his power to protect who from his abuser he's not free yet from his abusers control. But yet he's supposed to have his all figured out on his own and be what what I feel like some of y'all want and that is for him to be morally correct. Victims of trauma do not owe anyone a representation let alone a perfect one that you already have built up in your head. And authors or creators if we're being honest do not owe you the allowance to disrespect them either for what they write. It's easy to move reality from fiction and media but I know at the same time some people really just don't care enough to do so or actually understand it all so. But look cir is a very sad and tragic character he's a victim of abuse still in that cycle of abuse and he fell in love yet doesn't know how to go about that in a way that is healthy. I'm not saying that you have to say that his stalking is now in the back of the mind because no. I feel like just understanding him and being attacked empathetic would be more nicer instead of just saying that he's a stalker and that is all to him as a character.

Again we've been down this road with prapai and sky because prapai "stalked" sky. When if we go back to how their story started Pai from the jump we have been shown is a player and i think some forget that when they first met. He goes to these races to obviously participate but he also picks up people to hook up with so when he saw sky that day to him it was nothing out of the ordinary. It's just the interaction of how sky and pai met and their interactions afterwards that give people the reason to label him as a "stalker". When in actuality prapai saw that there was more to sky than what he was showing and telling. Prapai grew such concern and worry for sky's well-being when he started to looked into his eyes he can tell that there was something really wrong and even though he didn't know he didn't and couldn't ignore it, it was really weighing on his mind something he constantly asked allowed when he's by himself and when he has found his arms that day when using care from he was sick he just wanted to know what happened. And I honestly think he would have really been regretful if he didn't stick around as long as he did to be there for sky. And yeah sky saw it as him being annoying. But we also saw Sky very much so fighting with the feeling of actually believing that someone liks him this much just showing him so much care and concern but he also tried not to let it get so much into his head. But because of prapai's patience and his actions lining up behind his words it led to him and sky having a very strong respectful relationship.

Can I just say that I really fucking HATE how the majority of the Arcane fandom praising Season 2 is deeply in the mindset of Piltover in reality? Like, it's not even funny, and I don't know where to begin.

I'll just start with Silco because he's this huge metaphorical character who is clearly written as the embodiment of a long list of sociopolitical agendas in the real world. And before I start, pardon my English, since it's not my first language.

I know y'all in the Anglo-American sphere tend to focus more on classism, inequality and police brutality theme. But the way I see it, THAT and every single dialogue plus the specific word choice of Silco & Sevika literally SCREAMS of postcolonial discourse (I guess F. Fanon is most well-known to y'all) and even some part of M. Foucault's philosophy, etc. I'm writing "etc." because the list will go on forever if I describe all these creepy historical parallels between the depiction of Zaun's internal conflict and what real countries that have been (or still are) colonies went through, and what real colonizer propaganda looked like during that time—like how those characters who fight for the nation's independence are the big bad villain and psychotic monsters who need "redemption arc" therapy, while those who cooperate with the oppressors are the good-hearted familial heroes of this story.

So upon reflection, if this fandom were to be a collective intelligence, we should have asked ourselves, "Is this show truly not problematic for portraying such a character as villainous?" and thus, "Is this show thematically implying far-right propaganda?" even before Season 2 presented us with this insane plot that glamorized the militaristic fascist aristocrat proclaiming martial law as a 'romantic revenge arc'.

But what did the majority of the fandom do since 2022? They were so busy shitting on this dead villain, claiming he has done so much wrong that he doesn't even deserve to be praised as a character. So instead of trying to understand where this character's point of view is coming from, they blindly hate him to the point where they are now fabricating a list of crimes that he didn't even commit, editing false information on the fandom wiki profile.

What's more frustrating to me is that I thought the problem was media illiteracy all along, but oh no, I was being way more optimistic than the reality. Now that I’ve read all these interviews from the showrunner and main writer—Linke and Overton—I get the sense of why Season 2 turned out like that. The more they babble on about this show, the clearer it becomes that they don't even acknowledge how messed up their political views are, which are so far-right. Taking the seemingly-centrist line doesn't make you fair, you're just passively siding with the oppressors. And lesbian sex scene doesn't make this show "progressive", in fact, hiding oppressor fantasy behind a rainbow flag makes it even more treacherous.

So yeah, I think critical voices should be much louder than this, but watching the majority of this fandom neglacting problems only to praise the show? I think my hope for humanity kind of get lost more and more as time passes, lol.

My Criticism: the erotic bond of Thomas and Orlok and the romantic/sexual bond of Ellen and Anna deserved more focus. (But that's also my thoughts on the various Draculas). Happily surprised they gave some sexuality to the newlyweds it literally never happens with Dracula media

I think that for the amount of time and the focus of the story, Eggers fit in as much as he could without it overshadowing the main core of 1) Orlok targeting Ellen and 2) Thomas and Ellen being in love and headed for tragedy. And yes! Eggers lets these newlyweds be truly in love and hot for each other! It's like what we deserved with Jonathan and Mina for 127 years, very nearly! :')

SPOILERS BELOW

That said, I do think that short of a real kiss with Ellen and Anna, Eggers gave us a decent 'what-if' of what Mina and Lucy might have been like if they both made it to marriage (bar Harding not quite measuring up to Arthur Holmwood standards, loving husband and father though he is). They are both married young women now and Ellen is rooming under Anna's husband's roof. It'd be tricky to have anything properly raunchy go on, but we do at least get that scene of Ellen laying in bed with Anna!

Before the Orlok business happens. Augh.

As for Orlok and Thomas...oh, but there is a lot to unpack there.

To be clear, this is very much not Dracula and Jonathan's weird predatory thing. It is another, weirder, semi-callback to The Lighthouse kind of thing. At least in the vein that the brief homoerotic flints of interaction we get there--

The slow dance scene where the two men who hate each other almost share a kiss, only for the younger man to recoil in panic.

A scene of insults and accusation where the older man describes the younger as having eyes like a lady's.

--lean on braided elements of homoeroticism, homophobia, and violent/elder masculinity baring its teeth at gentler/younger masculinity via comparisons to women.

Or, to be frank, even as Orlok is bitter at Thomas being the man Ellen chose despite their 'covenant,' it isn't just the bitterness of, "She chose another man over me!" but, "She chose a weaker, younger, effeminate man over me!" Which paired perfectly (horribly) with his running theme of being a psychic rapist. Orlok is the more masculine man. Thomas is, in his eyes, the lesser, effete competition. Why, the boy may as well be a woman himself.

Cue Orlok taking a route with Thomas that we never see him take with any other man in the movie. He preys on Thomas in the exact same way he would eventually do to Ellen at the climax. The only dignity he leaves the young man with is that he does not strip him as he feeds--only Orlok is naked, crouched and feeding at Thomas' breast twice. The first time being the result of getting almost obscenely aroused--literally or hungrily--at the sight of Thomas' thumb bleeding. All we get to see there is Thomas' terror under sudden paralysis as Orlok closes in. And the next time we see Thomas is him, not on the chair where we last saw him, but sprawled on the floor.

On his stomach.

Dressed, true. But with his face and front down. Already bitten at the heart.

Then, in his last scenes with Orlok, we see him actively try to kill Orlok in his box. Orlok stops the attack, tracks him down to the locked room Thomas has hid in--a room in his own castle! which he could unlock!--and purposefully uses a trance to make Thomas open the door. Just as he trances Thomas into laying himself out on the bed, locked and afraid in his own body. Orlok falls on him, feeding again at Thomas' chest, loudly and deeply draining what sounds like a horrific amount of blood.

(There's a comment to be made about the reversal of taking in bodily fluids, but we'll skip that for now.)

In the midst of this, Thomas is treated to a vision of Ellen in Orlok's place. Seeing it, he looks almost docile. Welcoming.

Orlok, naked, drinks and drinks. And leaves him on the bed.

Instead of slaughtering him. He doesn't even call the wolves to him once he's finished to eat the leftovers.

Which I find strange, considering that in a future scene, Orlok muses aloud to Knock that Thomas yet lives. As if he's surprised. Did he have the wolves on a mental timer to come after Thomas by daylight? Or did he think that, despite Thomas' heart still miraculously beating, he had drained enough blood to assume the young man would die on his own?

Or.

Was the surprise not that Thomas was alive, but alive and human? Not the undead, like himself, like he planned to make Ellen?

It doesn't add up to have the wolves only appear by daylight to spook Thomas out of the window--if Orlok was so concerned about technically keeping his hands clean of murdering him and so keeping the covenant with Ellen technically not a thing of theft, he could have absolutely let the wolves in that night to finish the job and be sure Thomas was torn to pieces. Instead, Thomas is intact come sunup, the door left open to the wolves...

...who only come running and raging up to him once Thomas proves to still be alive and awake despite how he passed the night. Can't be undead if you aren't dead first. This, combined with how Thomas states later on that he still feels Orlok's shadow/hold on him, seems to imply that Orlok didn't want to just kill Thomas off. He seethes about Thomas so deeply that he would rather see the young man under his heel forever just as he means to keep Ellen under his thumb and mentally assaulted at every opportunity.

If Ellen is Orlok's prize for desire's sake, Thomas is Orlok's conquest made out of pride. 'Making a woman' of Ellen's chosen man. Hell, he puts the words in Ellen's mouth when he tugs a mental string in her to get them fighting. Despite Orlok only ever mentioning the technical truth of Thomas 'selling her for gold' (with a contract he could not read and assumed was for a commission and a completion of a house sale), Ellen somehow has the knowledge to accuse Thomas of 'falling into Orlok's arms'--when, in fact, Orlok mounted Thomas and did what he did.

.........

Which brings me to the grimmest point of this whole fucked up mess which I really truly hope is Not the Case.

Orlok had his puppeteer hands in both of the Hutters. He was obviously leaning heaviest on Ellen, but he had his grip on Thomas too. So I have to wonder.

How much of the sex scene between the Hutters was entirely their will?

What if Orlok, in full voyeur fashion, pulled even more strings to make that sudden feverish intimacy happen? Ellen says aloud that they will show him their love. Is it a show only Ellen wants them to put on? Or is it Orlok, once more violating his victims by proxy? Either way the shock-vision of Ellen weeping and vomiting blood cuts the mood immediately--however real or imagined it was--and both Hutters snap out of their haze to embrace.

Something else for Orlok to watch. A little knife-twist from his face-to-face with Ellen--You cannot love--and fuel on the martyr fire for Ellen, who heard from Orlok that he would kill all she loves, including Thomas, if she refuses him--in another life, another threat: (If you make a sound I shall take him and dash his brains out before your very eyes.)--though the villain could have killed him a dozen times already. But she cannot take the gamble.

All of which is a very very long way of saying that while Orlok's main focus is definitely on Ellen, there are signs of another stranger hate-attraction with Thomas. The opponent he wants in full submission versus Ellen, the runaway bride to coerce into being his equal.

tl;dr: They're just not that into you, Orlok, let it go

yourusername i cried to him last night about how proud i am of him. he is so wonderful in this film. you will all love him as much as i do. but i still love him more.

but i also wanted to say that i came to adore this man through long days, fun nights, in-depth talks, and silly inside jokes. i spent every day with him and got to know his heart, his sense of humor, his charm, and first and foremost, his immense talent.

Here are some observations I’ve made about them:

↠ They look good on camera.

↠ Usually have thick defined eyebrows.

↠ They’re one to obsess over their appearance in a very thorough way.

the discourse over the mario movie's reviews has truly been driving me insane. i've watched the takes devolve from "those snooty high brow film critics are just mad this silly mario movie isn't as intellectually stimulating as tár or [insert your idea of a High Brow Art Film here]" to "those snooty high brow film critics are mad it isn't as good as a pixar movie," as if that's an impossibly high bar to clear. this idea that film critics are up in their ivory tower hating fun and cartoons in general when all the critical reviews i've read were just like "it felt like it skimmed over letting mario and peach get to know each other at all in order to constantly jump to the next action setpiece" or "the performances are hit or miss" or "the jokes weren't that funny" or "the licensed song choices were trite." the OUTRAGE over this movie getting completely middle of the road reviews just because it's 3% short of getting a "fresh" on rotten tomatoes. the fact that people seem completely unable to accept that a movie can be mediocre but fun to watch, that critics aren't "wrong" for wanting a cartoon to have a half decent script, that people can have different opinions without it needing to be a culture war. the way box office performance is being treated as an objective measurement of quality. it's the perfect storm of brand loyalty, people taking rotten tomatoes scores too seriously, and gamers hating media critics on principle. it genuinely feels like it's getting to the point where people can't express negative or even middling opinions about the movie at all without people coming out of the woodwork to say "but it was FUN" or "it's just a kids' movie, don't take it so seriously," as if every other day of the year people aren't begging for kids' cartoons to be taken seriously and treated with respect as art. and as if this kids' movie isn't also banking on nostalgia for 40+ years of video games. the game the movie is named after is literally older than a lot of the parents taking their kids to see the movie. this shit is so inescapable that it's bordering on making me annoyed at the movie itself, even though i DO want to see it and think it looks okay! it's a nightmare

spoilers under the cut but I have complaints about people’s (lack of) media literacy

Oh my god okay so first of all, if you haven’t seen a movie how are you going to comment on it. Reading summaries and other people’s reviews only is not sufficient to make an original point. you do not know what you’re talking about. just stop.

Second, the movie is. satirical. Which I thought was obvious from the absurd premise and surreal visuals? This is not supposed to be the real world. Nor is it advocating for all the stuff it shows. In fact, it’s even actively indicting some of what it shows. For example: fucked up power dynamics in sexual relationships exist in the movie, but the movie is not saying they are good, it’s criticizing them. Is this not getting through to people?

Third, and related, it’s not ! just ! about ! a sexy baby !! Partly because again, satire. But also partly because she rapidly goes through childhood & adolescent maturity. And it’s not meant to be, like, linear… the regular laws of empirical data and science do not apply to this world… so she is not in fact, like 6 when she’s having sex but more like 16. Which you could argue is still a minor, and im not disputing that, because again the movie is critical of this part and duncan is a total loser. But there’s a massive difference between the mental development of those two ages. ALSO there’s literally nothing inherently wrong with baby bella autonomously discovering masturbation. That’s extremely normal for little kids, often just as a way of self-soothing because it feels nice and not with any awareness of sexuality. And it’s fine if you thought that was a weird scene! but it’s hardly pedophilia to include in the film when the “baby” in question is in fact played by fully grown adult emma stone and I cannot believe that I’m seeing people accuse this movie of that

Fourth, if you claim your takeaway from this movie is “it wants me to believe that women’s power only exists through their sexuality” then I don’t believe you’ve seen the entire movie (see point 1). Narratively it’s only a means to an end for Bella, and when she gets tired of it, she stops! She gets bored of duncan and reads philosophy! She leaves her sex work career and becomes a medical professional! And, even in the sex scenes, while there are many, they center her and her experience, her pleasure. Yes, her tits are out a lot but the sex scenes are weird, intentionally grotesque without being violent. The montage with duncan is shot through a fisheye lens and literally pans away from the bed to focus on a bird landing in the room. Duncan can proclaim himself the best lover in the world, but he’s really not important to the scene ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In conclusion, I know the people I’m complaining about aren’t going to read this, but just in case, I urge you to learn media literacy. And anyone else who read all of this, thanks lol!! accepting good faith discourse in the notes/replies

The object show community has honestly become so unsafe and toxic. I’ve only been in the community for a year and a half ,but the difference between now and then is honestly drastic. People don’t even enjoy the media anymore, all everyone does is criticise. While criticizing is fine, I don't think a community should be based on that. I have barely seen ANY positive posts about the ii movie, everyone treats it like it's meant to be God tier and I get that everyone thinks they should get what they deserve, but holy shit you guys have nothing good to say. Shipping has also become such a difficult point of discussion in the community, considering that everyone believes that their ship and their ship ONLY is good. Most of the shipping stuff wasn't relevant to me, because I'm a multi-shipper but the fandom takes ship wars to an extreme,honesty speaking. Another point is the fact that people are mad at ii for making canon ships,, again this doesn't bother me,because I have always liked all of the popular ships but it's honestly not that deep. I think I've seen like a million posts about the payjay scene from ii 18,, and people got SO mad over fan service despite the fact that it was like 3 minutes long 😭 Another thing is, I haven't talked about c2bc on here b4, but Cole getting cancelled proved how fast the fandom is willing to act immediately on a show's downfall.
