Okay so, Kara and Mike (I just like calling him that cause it’s such a meh name tbh) got back from Argo with the rock Lena needed to rid Sam of Reign. They kept her occupied while baby girl worked on the cure and the whole thing was really anticlimactic cause it was over in like three minutes. They did some cape tricks, again, like those didn’t stop being cool six episodes ago, and they managed to bring down a 3-in-1 Worldkiller like it was nothing. As if Reign alone hadn’t put Kara in a comma not so long ago. But yay, cape tricks! (I’m so sorry, I’m just salty and bitter). So Sam is all better and reunited with Ruby (genuine yay here, it was about time) and Kara asks Lena to make more of that black goo, cause she wants to help her people. Lena of course agrees and says she’ll do it immediately cause duh, she’ll do anything to help (cause of her evil Luthor side, you know). 

Um… Meanwhile, Kara has decided she doesn’t want to live on earth anymore and she wants to go back to Argo, leaving everyone to fend for themselves. And no, Lena, it’s not weird at all that both Kara and Supergirl suddenly decided to take a leave at the same time. Not. At. All! (side note, Kara is apparently leaving for an assignment?? Like, what kind of assignment requires a farewell party? What did she tell Lena??) So now poor Alex has lost her sister and Ruby and Sam and it’s legit so sad, I just wanna hug her. 

Some… pretty boring stuff happens in Argo, Kara is all like “finally I can relax and be normal” and ends up being paranoid and looking over her shoulder all the time. In the meantime, things on earth are boring as well until they aren’t and James (and his weird Christian Bale Batman impression) has to stop what seems to be a robbery but the dude he comes across has a DEO technology weapon so now the DEO has to figure out the fuck happened and their shit is being mass produced. There’s this scene that introduced pro-gun Lena and it was… Yeah, that was a thing. While I definitely see where she’s coming from, I’m still not 100% here for it. Like, a handgun maybe, yeah. I’d want one too if my life was threatened every fifteen minutes. I just hope she’s not one of those assault rifle kinda people.. Plus, I still kinda think that with the amount of times she’s almost been murdered, she should be all about for stricter gun control, not the opposite. Tbh, that whole part looked suspiciously a lot like a way to make Lena seem bad (they really need to watch out if they’re gonna have Lena voice pro-gun views, especially with the number of young people liking the character, tbh). Anyways, I digress. 

There are some very very awkward and cringy words spoken as Kara and Mike confess their love for each other and I’m like… Girl. He lied to you. And I’m not even gonna talk about past Mike. The one from the future was married. And he lied about it. And Kara said she was over him. And now she’s all like “I had this dream once and I was on a quiet path like this one and you were there with me… And now here you are…” and I’m like “fuck off, I quit” xD So, anyway, turns out things in Argo aren’t as perfect as one would hope. There’s still this… witch lady who I don’t know what to call, I’m sorry I don’t know the terminology, I mean the one who created the Worldkillers anyways, and she’s wreaking havoc. 

Back on earth J'onn and James track down this dude who manufactured their weapons and realize he’s been making more and selling them or sth (I may be getting some details wrong, but honestly? I wasn’t paying too much attention) and anyways they find this guy (the one from the beginning who was stopped by BatJames) and who was apparently recently fired and had it out for his bosses. J’onn manages to talk him out of blowing their brains out saying all about how guns are bad and never the right solution to which James agrees with and he (J'onn) also decides to make the DEO agents stop using those weapons. Half of the people are not happy about it and basically, the whole ep was about guns and whether people should or shouldn’t have the right to them, I guess. 

Back to Alex, she’s now certain she wants a kid so she’s looking up adoption websites and such and, honestly, on one hand, I’m here for mum!Alex cause like she wants it so bad, but on the other, it seems like a way to kinda get her off the dating pool since if she gets a child she’ll be too busy to date, and that’s basically minus one LGBTQ+ character from the show and it’s not like we had an abundance of them in the first place… Also, Lena finds out that Eve has apparently studied science and is very impressed and takes her under her wing and has her work with her on the very secret project Supergirl asked her to. Which was, tbh, the best thirty seconds of the whole episode (also, apparently, the black rock is “more than what it seems” and Lena is on the path to discovering something revolutionary) xD Oh and J’onn and his dad decide to perform the Reach, well, his dad decides that it’s time to perform the Reach, which is an ancient Martian rite during which the older generation passes down all their memories to the younger generations before they die. Also, turns out that, oh no, Sam is not 100% better yet, what a surprise, and that Reign is still somewhere in there, and that asshole who wanted to create Worlkillers, I don’t remember his name, helps the evil Kryptonians get to earth with Kara and Mike’s ship. Aaaaand that’s pretty much all I remember from the ep haha 

Like I said, it was not a good episode (not that I’m too surprised xD) and it seems like they’re actively trying to lose their fans cause they are being stupid with their writing choices. Maybe it’s on purpose, maybe they just can’t write that well, who knows lol

During lunch at Kazarma, our waiter mentioned that the historic building used to be owned by Mantos Mavrogenous, a bad bitch who kept a cache of weapons and cash in the building during the Greek War of Independence. Yes, she wound up dying alone, broke from spending all her money on the war effort (for which she was never repaid), and yes, we stan.

3. Take the ferry and bop over to Santorini.

The ferry takes around four hours (compared to the one-hour flight) but offers a much more scenic route. They usually stop to pick up passengers in Naxos, Paros, and Ios, and you can go on the deck to scope out the different cities. Didn’t have time to see any ruins on your trip? The Portara is easily visible from the ferry deck and dates back to 530 BC.

When it’s time to dock in Santorini, you’ll go down into the bowels of the ferry to collect your luggage before disembarking. It’s very much like you’re in Star Wars shipping off in the belly of a giant spacecraft before the gates open and SUN! SANTORINI! JK, you can’t see anything yet because you gotta go up the cliff and settle into a hotel for that Insta-famous Santorini view.

4. Stay in a traditional cave house and appreciate the architecture.

Fun fact: All those cave-like homes you see on Insta (hyposkapha, if you want to be legit about it) are because the islanders kept getting their shit rocked by pirates in the 16th century. As a result, they had to build upward on the most precipitous cliffs they could find.

This is why Santorini looks and feels so different from other warm would-be-beach towns. There’s no way of just walking from your hotel to the shore—all the resorts are on top of literal cliffs. 5. Go on a caldera cruise.

I’m sorry to report that my stupid ass saw a bunch of photos of the ocean in Santorini and was like, “Oh, it’s definitely like a beach town.” Folks, it ain’t!

Few beaches are accessible by foot in Santorini, so the best way to take advantage of that crystal blue Aegean is by boat. We chartered a Riva yacht (v bougie) to take us around the island and stopped where the water looked the dreamiest to pop in for a swim.

On the boat, Sigalas shared this hot blogger tip for getting the best Insta eye-candy shot: Shoot video on your phone, scroll through the video to find the perfect still, and use a screenshot of THAT to get the perfect photo. Very important: you’ll need to go into “Settings —> Camera —>” and adjust “Record Video” to “4K at 60 FPS” for the most high-res stills.

6. Go swimming in the hot springs.

During your caldera cruise you should also ask the captain to make a detour to the hot springs. You’ll know you’re there because the water goes from deep blue to turquoisey-green with orange sulfur on the rocks of the inlet.

Do: Bring a pool noodle. Sorry to everyone who got tired swimming into the inlet, but our captain immediately sized up our wine-drunk asses and was like, “You probs want these.” And we did!Don’t: Wear white in the hot springs. The sulfur will fuck this up. Don’t: Wear any jewelry in the hot springs. Again, sulfur.

A fact I tried very hard to contain during my trip is that I’m the world’s pickiest eater. My definition of seafood means fish sticks from those microwave meals with the penguin, and avoiding vegetables is a firm 1/16th of my personality. But Greece, where the produce and fish are so fresh, suddenly made me the biggest tomato stan on earth, and I would step into the ring for second helpings of whatever sea creature is placed in front of me.

It also helps when everything is deliciously cooked. The restaurants are so exclusive that you usually have to be a member of the Katikies Club to dine there—although this year they opened Mikrasia (with locations in Santorini and Mykonos) and DePaul Restaurant to the public. Santorini Mikrasia has only six tables and it’s generally recommended you book a spot a few weeks in advance. The Mykonos version has more tables but is also v fancy — resident chef Angelos Bakopoulos was on Greek Master Chef. Both restos also won the FNL awards in 2018 (the Greek equivalent to the Michelin Guide).

While a lot of Santorini is Greek Orthodox, Fira town (the capital) has a Catholic church and a monastery where the Vatican would store Greek wines to be shipped to the Pope. Recently, the monastery was bought and turned into Katikies Garden. It’s the most family-friendly of the Katikies clique because there aren’t as many steep stairs. (Seriously! That’s why Santorini doesn’t have a ton of kids running around! What if they fall!)

While everything else in Santorini feels exactly like you’d picture it from postcards and Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (sun-drenched, everything bright white), the streets of Fira have a Venetian feel. Even the building’s colors reflect this: There’s a lot of beige and pink as well as rounded archways and courtyards that feel hella Italianate.

It’s all very subtle, but the best way I can describe it is like you suddenly look up and gaslight yourself into wondering if you’re still in Greece. You are!

I’m a pretty tough spa critic (I like my massages how I like my breakups: rough, hard, and with me begging for five more minutes). Yet no treatment has ever compared to the one I got from Nicole at A.Spa. No joke, I physically felt her clear my sinuses through my back at one point. Magic.

Stop by Venetsanos Winery for a tour of the first industrial winery on Santorini. If you’re the opposite of claustrophobic, you can squeeze your bod through one of the old underground wine storage tanks and finish off your day with a breathtaking view of the caldera as you sample a bunch of delicious wines.

Contemplate the meaning of life as you stare off into the Aegean and wonder when your husband will return from Greco-Persian war.

Then, consider taking a second mortgage on the house you do not own in order to stay in Greece forever. Or at least come back next year.

It was day four of being medicated to treat a nasty case of bronchitis. While the z-pack of antibiotics hadn’t yielded any side effects, the codeine cough syrup certainly had. For some reason, that particular medicine was causing your sleep time to become, you guessed, what an acid trip felt like.

The first night you’d found yourself dream-working in an underground department store, where sharks and fishes shopped as though they were humans, and paid in seashells.

A nap had yielded a very vivid experience of being a horse-back jumping champion, where you were apparently Russian, and almost disqualified from the Olympics for using a certain type of hand lotion which was banned.

The second night brought you the vision of going for a midnight snack in your house, only to open the fridge to the pickles putting on a cabaret-type show. Dream-you had applauded them and closed the fridge as their curtain call.

After that, you’d taken a break from the medicine. While the dreams had been funny to recall, you didn’t like waking up feeling confused and still as sick as before.

A day and a half though without the medicine had proven to be a mistake, and your cough had returned, possibly even worse than before. You knew it was probably because you were getting better and all the junk in your body was finally breaking up to be expelled. But you hurt, and you felt crappy, and decided the bizarre dreams were worth it if it was going to accelerate your healing.

Which is how you found yourself after a midday nap calling Adam to relay your latest dream. Your fiancé laughed about your surreal sleep experiences, but was also concerned, even after the doctor told you it was a documented, and not serious, side-effect.

“Hey,” Adam answered the phone.

“What up chicken butt?”

“You’re so weird,” he chuckled. “I’m just leaving the gym. What are you doing? How are you feeling?”

“Not terrible,” you replied. “But I just had I think the MOST fucked up of my dreams.”

“Do I want to know?”

“Basically, every time we had sex, I ended up pregnant. And not just one kid, like twins and triplets sometimes. So, we had like, twenty kids to start. We were the god damn Duggars.”

“The who?”

“Reality TV show family? 19 Kids and Counting? TLC?”

“…sure?”

“Ugh, anyway, so yea, we just having kids and kids and I was like sooo done with it, so I made you get a vasectomy. Except, it didn’t fucking work! So legit when I woke up, I think we had like almost 50 kids in our house. The old lady in the shoe had nothing on us.”

“That’s…a weird dream, definitely,” Adam agreed. He paused for a moment. “Baby, I don’t think you should take any more of this medicine. It’s really messing with you. Is it worth it?”

“It’s just making me have really bizarre sleepy times,” you argued. “I tried not taking it; I felt like shit. And, I mean, at least this side effect is amusing?”

“I don’t find having to get a vasectomy amusing,” he countered.

“It’s not like it was real, you big baby.”

“What if it is though? What if it’s not a dream, but like, a prediction? For the future?” he teased.

“Oh? Am I Miss Cleo now?”

“I don’t know, you could be,” Adam claimed. “Who knows what this medicine is really doing to you. Maybe it’s tapping into some weird part of your subconscious or something. And I’m gonna tell you right now, I cannot handle that many kids. I’ll be lucky to handle two, maybe three.”

“Well, then, it’s decided. You’re getting a vasectomy. That’s final,” you stated. “And we’ll make sure it works.”

“What the fuck? Why is this on me?”

“BECAUSE. It’s way easier for you then it would be for me as a woman. They’d have to take like, all my organs out. That’s major. That’s not happening.”

“OK, OK, time out,” Adam spoke. “This conversation needs to just end. We aren’t even having any kids any time soon. This isn’t even worth discussing. Your weird ass dreams aren’t going to decide what our lives with be.”

“You’re the one who wondered if they were premonitions for our future!”

“Well, that was a joke, and shouldn’t be taken seriously,” he explained.

“Know what I just realized? Cleo is an anagram for Cole! What if it is a sign? What if I am psychic?!”

“Dear God…stop.…”

“I think I’m having another vision! I see you…bringing me home ice cream…yea…and Chipotle.”

“You’re the worst,” Adam declared.

“Oh! And wine!”

“You cannot drink and take medicine.”

“I also see…that as a thank you…I totally go down on you…or fall asleep on you. It’s kind of blurry. I’m not sure. I think it’ll depend on the wine.”

You said nothing more, grinning to yourself, thoroughly entertained with the conversation. Adam was equally silent on the phone, which you suspected was him trying to appear annoyed, even though you knew he wasn’t.

“You done now?” he finally asked.

“You bringing me tacos?”

“Only if you promise me to stop thinking you’re psychic.”

“You started it,” you pointed out.

“And I regret it deeply,” Adam assured you, making you giggle.

“Fine, deal.”

“Thank you. I’ll be home in a bit.”

“Sweet! Love you!”

“Love you too,” he replied. “Even if you’re more psycho than psychic.”

Author note: I made myself laugh writing this, no lie.

Also, the underwater store & pickles dancing dream are actual dreams I had way back in high school. I recently had one where I saw on Instagram that Charlie Sheen had bought my childhood home and was throwing a pool party so my brother and I raced back home (mind you we live in VA now and we’re from NY) to go to it. My brother was really stoked in the dream.

Guys, get good sleep. It’s important. But document your weird dreams for future reference maybe. Or at the very least to have a hilarious story to tell.

Traumatized by Horror

Maybe this will be fun for someone.  This is my draft of an article I wrote recently.  This is pre-editing, as I submitted it.  You can find the published version right here.  Just an interesting contrast between what I write and what gets published.  Sometimes you get edited a lot, sometimes you get edited a little.  But if you’re interested in the creative process at all and how publishing works sometimes, it’s a nice comparison.  

There’s probably all kinds of psychology behind why people enjoy watching horror movies that range from things like the adrenaline rush you get from being scared to the fact that the Leprechaun is clearly awesome.  That’s all fine and dandy like sour candy except for when horror goes a little beyond the usual thrill and maybe wonks your brain six ways from Sunday. Because those kind of shenanigans actually happen now and then - sometimes people get so traumatized by horror they have to get medical professionals involved.

127 Hours Grossed Out Audiences En Masse

Some might argue that 127 Hours isn’t a horror movie at all, but it does star James Franco and you can’t spell “James Franco is terrifying” without James Franco, so let’s not speak of it again.  In the movie 127 Hours, there’s an extremely disturbing scene in which Franco, realizing Seth Rogen is nowhere to be seen, has to take matters into his own hands and save himself by performing an impromptu field amputation of his own arm with a Swiss Army knife.  This scene was at least as disturbing as Franco’s entire performance in Why Him?

The cutting scene lasts for about 3 minutes but it’s a bloody, intense, Francoscream-filled endurance test for the audience and some audience members were not able to withstand it. In fact, there’s a remarkable list of audiences who suffered a number of side effects which in some cases may have been hammed up a little since they couldn’t be confirmed, but others were making the whole ordeal sound like 127 Hours was used to punish people Clockwork Orange style.

A reviewer who saw the film at the Toronto International Film Festival mentions 3 people passed out and one had a seizure during the movie and goes out of their way to express they didn’t think it was a PR stunt as some people suggested - the audience was genuinely grossed out by the scene and had maybe never seen movies before.  Weird one to pick for their first try.

History repeated itself when the director of Toy Story 3 had a private screening of the movie and two more people passed out.  Did Buzz and Woody steal their wallets and take compromising photos while they were out?  We can only assume.

The editor of Vanity Fair held a screening with Franco and the director on hand.  People reportedly wept during at that one and, yeah, another dude went face down, ass up over it.

Movieline actually put together an entire timeline of people losing their shit over the movie. Some are given the side-eye treatment, suggesting maybe a few of these were played up to hype the movie given all the other stories of people passing out, but enough of them were legit that it’s safe to assume if you want the family to leave the house quick after Thanksgiving this year while still being able to pretend you weren’t doing it on purpose, this is the movie you want to put on.

Freaks Was Accused of Causing a Miscarriage

Have you ever seen the movie Freaks from 1932? It’s one of the earliest most controversial horror films and is famous for this completely baffling scene;

To this day, I won’t agree to anything during a work meeting without chanting “I accept it! I accept it! Gooble gobble! Gooble gobble!”  That went over like gangbusters when I was asked to start wearing pants again.

Back in 1932, a movie about murderous circus people was pretty cutting edge and, if we’re being honest, it still is.  No one would make this movie today because those actors all were actual circus performers and modern audiences tend to frown on exploiting people by calling them freaks. To fully appreciate just how well this movie went over when it premiered though, you just need to dig into the lore around it.  While it seems to have ruined the career of the director, it had much more harrowing repercussions in the real world where one woman claimed to have had a miscarriage while watching a test screening. She threatened to sue the studio and their response was to recut the movie to make it less horrifying. Try to imagine that working today.

The newer version of the film had fewer murderous scenes and also got rid of a castration because that was a thing that someone thought was necessary to film in the first place.  Word is those scenes are lost for all time, so if you ever wanted to see a circus strongman get his dong cut off, you’re going to have to wait for that episode of Big Bang Theory like the rest of us.

The Exorcist Straight Up Ruined People

If you haven’t seen the Exorcist then your mother and I are extremely disappointed in you.  Please go watch it immediately. It came out in 1973 and it still holds up as an amazing and effective horror movie and the reason so many of us masturbate with crucifixes.  The story and the acting really produce an undeniable sense of dread and terror that forces you to make sure the blanket covers your feet at night because the monsters can’t touch your ankles if they’re covered, and that’s a rule. It also seriously fucked up a whole bunch of people.

Any time a movie causes someone’s heart to malfunction, and not in that “three sizes bigger” Grinch way, it’s pretty noteworthy. A New York Times article from January 1974 recounts people standing in massive lines to get into the theater to see the film, with scalpers selling tickets for upwards of $50 which is ironically what it costs to get a drink, popcorn and a movie ticket for IMAX today.  It also mentions the number of people who vomited while watching the movie, and some who walked out, or fainted.  And then, apparently, several people had heart attacks.

Is it possible the stories of heart attacks is just someone blowing pea soup up our asses? Maybe.  In the pre-internet world all kinds of shit happened without people idly filming it on their phones in the hopes the suffering of a stranger would make them go viral. But the influence of The Exorcist does go beyond the mass pukings and odd heart attack.

If you’ve never heard the term cinematic neurosis then welcome to your crash course.  It’s what a psychologist might call the phenomenon of a patient developing anxiety, dissociation and potentially psychotic symptoms because of a movie, requiring the intervention of a mental health professional to overcome.  There’s a study that mentions a case caused by Jaws, one by Invasion of the Body Snatchers and 5 separate incidents caused by The Exorcist because a pre-teen girl whose head spins is always slightly more disturbing than pod people and Richard Dreyfuss.

Patients affected by The Exorcist suffered insomnia, panic attacks, PTSD and more. One had dreams about the Devil with a dick in his mouth.  And sure, we all have dreams about the Devil or Elmer Fudd or whomever with a dick in their mouth sometimes, but this was to the point that the person needed psychotherapy to deal with it, so you can assume that was a hell of a devil dick.

Dracula and Eyes without a Face Caused Mass Faintings

To the best of my knowledge I have never fainted. Once I drank so much at a party in college that I woke up in the parking lot of a bagel deli next to an exceptionally large pool of drool, but I don’t think that’s the same thing. I can say for certain no horror movie has ever made me faint though, because of my robust constitution.  And maybe that’s a product of the times because back in the day, people were dropping like flies watching movies like Eyes Without a Face and Dracula.  

In 1928, Dracula starring Bela Lugosi was like if Hereditary and The Exorcist humped and had a baby with a remarkably distinct hairline. That shit scared the bejeezus out of people and in 1928, it was very hard to replace bejeezus. The San Francisco Chronicle talked about a nurse on hand with smelling salts to help handle an average of 14 faintings per night.  Now the movie-makers of 1928 weren’t above maybe hiring some people to engage in a little bullshittery to help hype a movie but there’s not any indication that these faintings were not legit either. In fact. Lugosi played Dracula on stage before playing the role on film, and 110 faintings were reported in the first week of the theater production.  His accent was that good.

In 1960, the French film Eyes Without a Face busted out a repeat performance of the Dracula phenomenon by making audience members buckle like belts thanks to one particular scene involving a face transplant which was a little much for 1960s sensibilities. It’s about 6 solid minutes of screentime featuring a doctor just cutting a face off and peeling it away like a goddamn banana.  You’d probably snicker at the effects today but back in 1960 people were all made of cotton candy and golly gosh so this probably hit people like a bag of grapefruits to the groin. Seven audience members fainted during the film’s showing at the Edinburgh Film Festival, and those were Scots, for God’s sake.  They eat haggis on purpose there.  

It’s worth noting that faintings not strictly limited to impressionable audiences of yesteryear, either.  Four audience members fainted during a showing of Lars Von Trier’s Antichrist in 2009, possible because they saw Willem Dafoe’s dong.  In 2016, EMS had to be called to a Toronto showing of Raw when a person fainted, because some people still aren’t down with cannibalism.

Ghostwatch Was the Worst Idea the BBC Ever Had

There’s a good chance you’ve never heard of Ghostwatch as it originally aired on the BBC in 1992 and 1992 British TV was the entertainment equivalent of a bag of scones to the jimmies. All you need to know about the show is that it aired at 9 PM, it featured recognizable TV personalities (if you’re British) and it was filmed like a typical live broadcast investigative TV show.  If you’ve ever watched Live PD, the format would be very familiar - in studio host talking to people out on the scene.  The on-scene hosts were at a particular home alleged to be haunted, investigating the claims and more or less mocking the idea.  Or so it seemed!  

The show was presented as a real documentary like so many current ghost hunting shows are, but this was well before that era.  This was new, and early enough in the evening that families were watching it with the kids.  And remember, it was 1992 in Britain so you probably could either watch this or some guy painting cricket balls on TV that night.

As the show progressed, the tenor went from goofy “this is a bullshit waste of time” to something more menacing.  Calls from viewers, which were actually fake but no one knew that at the time, began to incorporate elements from the “real” haunting that was being presented on the show. People professed to have had similar experiences with a ghost knocking on their pipes and shit started going down on camera until the studio went full apocalyptic ghostsplosion.  One of the hosts gets dragged off and presumably ghost murdered and the studio lights explode as the main host gets possessed on camera and threatens to rain holy hell down on the viewing audience before the how cuts out.  Sounds kind of cool, right?  Well, the 30,000 people who called the BBC within an hour didn’t think so.  And that was the least of their problems.

11 million people watched Ghostwatch and it fucked them up royally.  It went from silly  to disturbing very quickly, however, when an 18-year old boy with some learning difficulties who watched the broadcast committed suicide days later.  His parents said he had been obsessed with the broadcast and believed the same ghost haunted their house.  He left a note saying that if ghosts are real, then he’ll be with them “always as a ghost.”

Star Trek, James Bond, and the trip from science fiction to science fact

The following is an excerpt adapted from The Edumacation Book: Amazing Cocktail-Party Science to Impress Your Friends by Andy McElfresh.

Here’s my misspent youth: I spent many, many hours in a camping hammock behind my parents’ house devouring the Science Fiction Hall of Fame series, everything by Arthur C. Clarke, many things by Robert Heinlein, the complete works of Philip K. Dick, and especially issues of the short-lived Galileo magazine. I also read Asimov’s Science Fiction magazine, which was a lot like Alfred Hitchcock’s Suspense Magazine, but with ray guns and the peculiar feature of having a different photo of Isaac Asimov in the upper left corner on each issue. One photo was of Asimov’s feet.

I got into sci-fi when I was a young teenager. That’s when I really started pouring on the steam as a competitive swimmer and a member of a barbershop quartet, which meant I had a lot of free time to read all the way through high school while other young men were spending all those tedious hours exchanging bodily fluids and viruses with young women (or each other). I was filling my head with possible futures, then thinking about them (or singing the baritone parts to one-hundred-year-old songs) for six hours a day in the pool. I never grew taller than 5-foot-6, which ruined my chances of becoming a world-class swimmer, and I never was able to grow a handlebar moustache, which ruined my chances of becoming a professional barbershop quartet singer. (So, thank God.)

I was super into gear, and dreamed of possessing impossible inventions, like I was Miniver Cheevy longing for the Medici gold. A chronosynclastic infundibulum that you could activate under your arm, which would serve as a holster for whatever you wanted to carry and was completely undetectable to anyone in the universe? I wanted. A portal projector that would allow you to walk through any wall, could teleport you anywhere, and somehow regulated the difference in temperature and air pressure? On my wish list. A watch that you could set to go back and undo all of the embarrassing moments in your life? I still want that. In fact, if the Devil is reading this, write my publisher for my email and we can make a deal.

Of course, the coolest stuff came in the dumbest stories. Bad science fiction is defined by constant stops and starts so they can explain the gear. “Tyrone Xandar pulled out his X251 Stratoblaster—a plasma energy pistol so powerful it could melt the metallic fur of a Denebian magmabeast”—stuff like that. Really takes you out of the story.

But there were so many things in fiction, movies, and TV shows that people just took for granted. Cool stuff that was part of their world of the future. Keep in mind that I was a little kid in the 1970s, when everyone thought that polyester clothing and digital watches were pretty awesome. I mean, if you didn’t have to know what the hell the big hand was doing while simultaneously generating projectile BO from the pits of your tight plastic football jersey, it meant the future was something we controlled.

Most of the 1970s, from the Carter administration to The Love Boat, did not work out. But don’t forget that there was a little thing called Star Wars that came along somewhere in there, and it carried on the tradition of using science fiction to tell stories that could have happened to anyone, in a future that had some pretty cool shit.

Star Trek

Food replicator. Universal translator. Tablet computers. Tractor beam. Star Trek was full of firsts when it debuted in the fall of 1966. There is so much wonderful optimism built into the premise of that show, from the Prime Directive (which was broken as many times as it was brought up) to the multicultural Team Benetton–in–space casting (ignore the accents, please) to even featuring the first interracial kiss on US television (though aliens used mind control on Kirk and Uhura to make it happen under protest). And Kirk got so much alien na-na that you know Bones had a special space-penicillin hypospray vial set aside for daily use.

And Star Trek was full of predictions, too, although I’m not sure how far they explored them as concepts. For example, they had a food replicator, from which crew and guests would request such exotic menu items as soup or Earl Grey tea. Give me a food replicator, it’s gonna be surf-and-turf from the Palm with frozen gold-leaf truffle from the Savoy. But in the future, I guess people want to appear humble when talking to a food replicator. Nowadays, there are several versions of food replicators, the most recent being a pizza printer that will work as a vending machine and that NASA is re-outfitting for the International Space Station.

The universal translator was first introduced on Star Trek. It could take any language—even telepathy—and turn it into mid-Atlantic droning with heavy reverb. And you know that disembodied brains are thinking things like “Fifty quatloos on the newcomer,” because even though they completely consist of brain tissue, they twitch around a little bit when they think. Nowadays, we have several translators, the most interesting of which are small handheld units developed by a number of Native American tribes to preserve their dying native tongues. However, Google Translate isn’t there yet. I took the phrase “Is this my favorite puppy I see before me?” and translated it first into Pashto, then Basque, then Sindhi, then Amharic, then back into English, and I got “I was the doll I liked before I saw it before.” It may not be as confusing and bizarre as the translation in Arrival, but Google definitely has some work to do.

Plenty of other cool ideas came out of the Star Trek canon, but we’ll finish up with the holodeck, which was first seen on the 1970s Star Trek animated series but didn’t really enter nerd consciousness until Star Trek: The Next Generation. I always thought the holodeck was both underutilized and not fully thought out, but they had other things to worry about, like constantly letting out Number One’s uniform and the strange sadness Denise Crosby seemed to bring to her role. Why didn’t they use the holodeck as a real-time, planet-to-planet communicator that would make you feel like you were talking to someone in person? No more space leave! What happens on the holodeck stays on the holodeck! Anyway, VR goggles are like the holodeck, according to VR goggle manufacturers, so let’s move on.

James Bond and Ian Fleming

We all know a guy who says that From Russia with Love is the best James Bond movie because it didn’t have a ton of unbelievable gadgets, just a briefcase with a choke wire and some gold sovereigns. That, of course, is a stupid opinion to hold. For one, it is one of the best James Bond movies because Quint from Jaws has blonde hair and kills James Bond–lookalikes for fun like he’s in The Most Dangerous Game. And for two, the gadgets from the Bond movies are super-awesome!

Author Ian Fleming was legit when it came to the spy business. He worked as an intelligence officer for British Naval Intelligence, most notably on Operation Goldeneye, which is where he got the book title and the name of his estate in Jamaica. He probably named the operation, since he was a bird lover and the Goldeneye is a bird. Want more evidence? The author’s name of his favorite bird guidebooks was James F%@$ing Bond [f%@$ing mine].

Fleming knew his stuff when it came to gadgets. Real stuff they had at his time in intelligence included tie-clip cameras (more astonishing is the fact that people wore tie clips), hollow teeth containing cyanide (actually, a Soviet invention), and the microdot, which anybody could make with an ordinary 35mm camera because it was just an incredibly tiny negative—a picture of a picture.

What imaginative bits of Bondiana have survived and flourished as real equipment? How about the exosuit, from the brewery scene in Goldfinger? Or the jetpack from Thunderball, which—while it was wired to a helicopter in the movie—was an actual prototype capable of 30 seconds of flight (working on The Awesome Show, I got to see a demo of the Zapata Flyboard Air that can stay aloft for 30 minutes). The fingerprint scanner in Diamonds Are Forever is now available on your iPhone, though it might be the most easily hacked security measure in history. And let’s not forget the homing beacon also from Goldfinger: Do you have a Tile connected to your keyring yet?

When it comes to fantastic gadgets, however, no Fleming story does it better than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. That damned car—in addition to tolerating those obnoxious children—was also a boat, a flying car that could hover, was remote controlled and self-driving, and even seemed to have its own artificial intelligence—all characteristics we see in today’s most cutting-edge cars. However, for all that foresight, Fleming never put in any drink holders.
