i feel like i have to ask - Chris for the character thing? :3
Teeheeā€¦ I got him twice lol.
How I feel about this character:
He is the gentlest, sweetest, most caring teddy bear that has ever existed and I absolutely adore him. Chris cares so much it hurts lol. I remember liking him when I was playing the games so long ago and then when I got back into the franchise (with the RE4 remake, I sort forgot he existed and was like full-force into Serennedy then so when I started to reacquaint myself with the rest of the media, I kind of slowly latched back onto him as a fav character and well, we all know how I feel about him now. Iā€™m literally making a custom 1/6 scale figure. Iā€™ve fallen deep lol.
All the people I ship romantically with this character:
Leon, obviously OTP but Iā€™m down with Piers and even Wesker (although that is purely to feed my need for toxic yaoi lol). Iā€™m also heavily involved in the Metaltangofield agenda and I will not apologize.
My non-romantic OTP for this character:
Jill of course!!! They are the best platonic combo. I also love his relationship with Claire and how there is just mutual respect and trust. Honestly, Chris would make the best best friend and heā€™s a fantastic big bro.
My unpopular opinion about this character:
Ughā€¦ honestly, I loved him in 6. I personally hated how he was perceived in that game and how the fandom just shit on him as a character. It pissed me off because he was clearly dealing with so much. He had a fucking TBI, of course he would be angry. He had memory loss, was only being told limited information and was basically thrown into a war zone completely unprepared. He was completely in the right to be angry and honestly, I wanted more lol.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:
Everyday I pray for two things: an Operation Javier remake and a re-haul of RE6 when it eventually get remade. They did so much with Luisā€™ character and gave him more nuance and depth in 4R, so when they get to 6, I want them to deal with Chrisā€™ TBI and amnesia way better than they did in the OG. I mean it perfectly sets up angst potential, just lean into it but also handle it with care and realism please.
thanks for the ask!!

Hi!! I hope you enjoy your break you 1000000% deserve one! Thought I would update you on my RE game progress lmao. Apologies in advance for how long this is.
Iā€™ve almost finished RE 0 and OMG I LOVE IT!! Rebecca is so cute I adore her so much. Iā€™m sad tho bc she didnā€™t even get 1 mission in before all the bioweapon bs. I also find it interesting that Birkin has such a big part in the overall & creation of the BOWs but heā€™s hardly in the games? Like heā€™s only actually in 0 & 2? And then bro just dies?!! And Wesker stays & becomes the big bad?!! I get Wesker bc they were both a huge part of it but the fact that Birkin is basically the one that started it and then just got pushed to the side is wild to me.
I tried to play OG RE4 but itā€™s so hard?! šŸ˜ I canā€™t even get past the very first village right after the gate & the first typewriter. & I even asked my dad who looked up a play through and followed that but itā€™s just terrible. And I spent $20 on it so Iā€™m going to have to try it eventually but itā€™s so hard. Why does the camera move 2 inches and then snap back to where it was it makes no sense.
Anyways I digress šŸ˜… I hope you had the most lovely Christmas & have the most wonderful of New Years!! šŸ’–šŸ’–
Hiya friend! šŸ‘‹
Thank you!! Itā€™s been an amazing break to be honest šŸ˜Œ šŸ’œ
Ahhhh! Iā€™m so exited for you!! I love RE0 and Rebecca is so underrated!! And yes! Birkin is a major player in RE even though he doesnā€™t get a lot of screen time as other villains; funny enough the only reason he pushed so hard to do G is because Alexia Ashford was an up and coming girl boss about to usurp his role šŸ˜
Ahh classic RE4 šŸ¤ itā€™s a toughie to transition to especially with how newer consoles have spoiled us with over the camera gameplay lol. It definitely takes some getting used to but if you can do it, itā€™s a fun game to play! It kicked my ass the first time playing it and had to ask a friend how in the hell he beat some parts šŸ˜ (the part in defending the house against ganados with Luis especially)
Aww thank you so much! šŸ„° I hope you did too!! šŸ’œ

if you'd make a comparison on OG Ashley and Remake Ashley what's your ups and downs on her changes? i never really played OG re4 and to be completely honest, I'm new to the re universe myself.
There are definitely going to be people in this fandom who disagree with me, but I really don't feel like Ashley changed all that much between OG and Remake. In terms of the changes in the cast, I think Ashley and Luis changed the least -- which is interesting, because those are the two who are most widely considered to be the "most improved." Both of them are REALLY similar to their OG counterparts; they both just have more meat on their bones this time around.
OG Ashley is a little bit bolder/hotheaded, and she trusts Leon right away whereas Remake Ashley doesn't, but that's really it.
Basically, Ashley's personality got toned down to match the pitch of Remake Leon's. Because, like
In OG, Leon and Ashley are both "loud" personalities. Leon can't ever shut the fuck up and thinks he is unironically extremely funny, and Ashley is immediate with slapping down bullshit that gets thrown her way (looking at you Luis) and quick to jump at any opportunity to be observably helpful, even if it puts her in danger. OG Leon also tries to swing his dick around as much as possible, and OG Ashley doesn't hesitate to literally run into his arms at one point and, during the ending, just blatantly asks him for sex.
They're both much more subdued in Remake.
Remake Ashley will still jump to help out, but she's nervous about doing it at first and sort of needs Leon's encouragement along the way. Remake Ashley still doesn't put up with crude bullshit, but she's much more matter-of-fact in her tone as opposed to OG Ashley's tone defaulting to "fuck right off with that." She also only tries hugging Leon once this go-around, and she's MUCH more subtle about being attracted to him -- as are her attempts to take up more of his time after the mission is over.
But, like. They're still the same flavor of spoiled, slightly judgmental rich girl who probably would've been categorized as the Weird Girl in school if not for her family's money and her own giant tits.
It's not a situation like, say, Krauser, who is almost an entirely different character in this version -- or even Leon himself, who comes off as almost downright humorless/joyless for big chunks of RE4make, whereas his OG counterpart was like 80% just a giant walking shitpost here to troll the fuck out of Salazar and Saddler and 20% genuinely charismatic and instantly broing it up with Luis and using a shockingly sexual bedroom voice with Ada during their first encounter.

9 people you want to know better!
Thank you @thestayathomedragon for tagging me!
last song i listened to: The Torture Tango from Spies are Forever by Tin Can Bros. (This song is so random wtf, just recently watched this musical for the first time and it was amazing)
currently watching: The Great British Sewing Bee lol, not really watching any series right now. (The Barbie movie keeps playing inside my head after I watched that, though. I'll soon be watching Resident Evil: Death Island on repeat, I'm sure.)
currently reading: I'm like in the middle of three books at the moment I think lol. Motivation to read is very up and down. I've been having an urge to read Shakespeare or something lately. I also relatively recently got into fanfiction again after years of not reading anything. It's been great. Chreon got their claws into me.
current obsession: Yeah, Resident Evil came back with a vengeance for me when I played the re4 remake almost on a whim. I was obsessed with the og resident evil 4 for a bit in my late teens and I was like ooh the remake is out! And I took one look at Leon and I still haven't recovered, I guess. I still sit up with a gasp at night when I'm trying to fall asleep because I'm having realizations about themes and parallels in the re4 remake. It literally keeps me awake at night because my brain keeps digging into it. So. Many. Thoughts.
Tagging (no pressure to do it) @no-thanks-bro @sunhatllama @resident-rats @they-are-separate-things @luisseras @solarmidnight @catsateherface5987 @kadavarine @luis-serras

New Event Bot! RE4E Luis Serra Navarro!
Ā”N3W B0T! āž” ~怊Angst Luis怋~
Tumblr media
I HAVE NO IDEA WHO THE ARTIST IS BUT I WANT TO KNOW AND CREDIT THEM AHHHH
Edit: Found it, creds on bot
Tumblr media
Playing og re4 made me realize the sheer LACK OF LUIS TIME
I'm glad they fixed that in the remake, cause like his character is literally intimately responsible for the stuff in game and he's an actual resident of the village.
For this bot the event rules were expected so I could make more Music Mania Bots
For this one I used the song La Camisa Negra by Juanes, a friend of mine once said it sounds like Luis and the sad love part was the vibes I wanted
I always like exploring that part of Luis's story, the part where he's literally running from old friends and neighbors through the lands that were once his home.
ITS SO SAD BRO
another thing I like is monsters and body horror!
Seeing the freaky monsters is one of my favorite parts of Resident Evil, they're so cool dude
Monster luver honestly, and now you get to experince the other side now playing as Luis's past love mutates to high hell!
Bitter sweet heart breaking romance! Promised love! Angst! I luv it it makes me feel something.
SIDE NOTE!: I need to make more monster bots, like I've only made mutated Leon I think. Why haven't I made Vicar Amelia or The Queen of the Vile Bloods? I need to do this smh

YakkingĀ ā€˜bout Games: Resident Evil 4
Tumblr media
Yakking ā€˜bout Games is a series where I talk about games that Iā€™m currently playing or have just finished. It can be new or old, console or PC, good or bad, it really doesnā€™t matter. If itā€™s a game worth talking about, youā€™ll see it covered here.
Where do I even start with this one? Resident Evil 4 is one of those games that doesnā€™t really need an introduction. Itā€™s a legend of the industry. A game that somehow managed to transcend its own genre to reinvent another. I could start with how it was supposed to be a more traditional entry in the series. I could discuss about it being part of the Capcom Five, a series of titles intended to be exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube which ended in complete disaster. I think it would be easier to just dive in, wouldnā€™t you agree?
Tumblr media
Fair enough, Leon. Weā€™re getting into it now.
After the Spencer Mansion (RE1) and Raccoon City (RE2 & RE3) incidents, the evil pharmaceutical organisation known as Umbrella are finished. All is right with the world. It doesnā€™t last long however as Ashley Graham (the US Presidentā€™s daughter) is kidnapped and only one man is up to the job: former rookie cop turned badass secret agent, Leon S. Kennedy. Leon is sent to rural Spain to locate and secure Ashley, but it isnā€™t long before things go pear-shaped and Leon ends up being infected with a mysterious parasite.
Tumblr media
To be fair, when have rescue missions ever gone smoothly in movies and video games?
I wouldnā€™t say the story in RE4 is the most complex or well delivered, but the dialogue and characters certainly hold it up. Iā€™m convinced that the writers just sat around watching Commando when coming up with the dialogue for this. Some of Leonā€™s lines feel right at home in that style of movie and I love them. A personal favourite of mine would have to be his exclaimation of ā€œNo thanks, bro!ā€ when first encountering one of the villains. The characters are also a delight. I adored Luis Sera, a very charming womaniser, Ada Wong, a femme fetale type returning from Resident Evil 2 and Lord Saddler, the grandiose leader of the evil cult that kidnapped Ashley. Of course I canā€™t forget The Merchant as well.
Tumblr media
Youā€™re imagining his voice right now, arenā€™t you? Me too.
To say that RE4 is just a survival horror game is overlooking what this game managed to achieve with its gameplay. It still keeps with its survival horror roots in that inventory and resource management is a key element. You donā€™t have a huge amount of inventory space at the start (though this can be upgraded) so you can only hold a certain amount of weapons, ammo and healing items. Meaning that you have be a bit smart with whatever you have. You can even play a little inventory Tetris to fit items in. You still solve puzzles and still have to hunt for key items in order to progress but what truly made this game stand out from the crowd was its take on third-person shooting.
Resident Evil 4 finally managed to crack the problem that so many third-person shooters and action games could not figure out. It managed to fix the camera perspective by having the camera always overlooking the main characterā€™s shoulder even when aiming. This was a literal game changer. It finally allowed for more precision and less frustration which wasnā€™t possible before. It feels great. Firing a gun in this game is a treat. All the weapons feel fantastic to use (especially the shotguns) and as mentioned previously, the over-the-shoulder perspective allows for more precise aiming so you can shoot enemies in certain body parts which plays a huge role as certain enemies and bosses can only be defeated this way. Instead of a reticule, you get a laser sight on all guns which adds a little difficulty to the aiming.
The melee combat also gets an upgrade. It was pretty simplistic in the previous entries as it was supposed to be more of a fall back option if you used up all of your ammo. You still get a knife in this game which can be drawn to give enemies a quick slash which is useful if theyā€™re downed, but you can also perform melee moves after staggering an enemy with a well-placed shot. These are pretty fun to pull off and can be instrumental in saving your life. The combat just feels fantastic and this game introduces so many different ways to deal with certain situations. Guns can even be upgraded in order to be even more effective with them dealing better firepower and higher ammo capacity.
There are problems with the gameplay for sure. Itā€™s not too long before you encounter Ashley and have her tag along with you for a decent chunk of the game. Now generally Ashley isnā€™t too problematic to have around. You can tell her to follow you, hold position and even have her hide in certain spots and generally she follows these orders to the letter. The problem lies with her AI just deciding to do some daft things from time to time. I had numerous instances where she would stop following me while we were escaping from some enemies and would just cower allowing the enemy to grab and take her away. Thus the ever grating ā€œLEON!!!ā€ screech begins (no offense to her voice actress.) I feel that Silent Hill 4 did the whole escort thing better. Eileen Galvin wouldnā€™t do anything crazy (unless you gave her a weapon.)
Tumblr media
Sheā€™s not best pleased with me after that last paragraph. I donā€™t blame her.
Then we have the Quick Time Events. Now generally I donā€™t have a problem with QTEs being in games. Itā€™s a regular thing in games now, I can live with it. The ones in RE4 at times can feel a little cheap. Especially the ones that just pop up out of nowhere during a cutscene when you least expect it. Not cool, Capcom. Not cool.
Tumblr media
I bet Indiana Jones didnā€™t have to worry about pressing square to run away...
Another issue I have is that some of the boss fights in this game do a pretty poor job of telling the player if their attacks are having any effect. It feels like you have to dump half your resources before they even flinch. This is a problem Iā€™ve had with most of the games in this series and it still happens in the recent ones. Itā€™s just not as bad. For the record, Iā€™m not saying that the boss fights are near impossible, Iā€™m just saying that I wish that certain bosses gave better indication that theyā€™re being hurt by my attacks.
Resident Evil 4ā€²s presentation is still excellent to this day. Obviously the graphics are showing their age (even more so when blown up to HD), but the enviroments are still striking and carry a great sense of atmosphere. I especially loved the look of the castle sections of the game. It definitely gave me a bit of a Devil May Cry vibe. (Makes sense. The two series are very much linked.)
Tumblr media
Definitely gets the ā€œSā€ for Stylish.
The cutscenes look good and are pretty well directed. The voice acting is really good considering when this came out. Plus I couldnā€™t fault the music and sound design if I tried. Itā€™s always been an area where this series has excelled at.
The game has a very good length to it. I finished it in about 10-11 hours. There is reason to go back again since you unlock some weapons and costumes just for finishing the game. There is also the Separate Ways and Assignment Ada chapters (available on every platform except the OG GameCube version) which focus on Ada Wong and they add a good few more hours to the play time. Plus you have the highly replayable arcade-style Mercenaries mode which tasks you with killing as many enemies as you can within a time limit to earn the highest score possible.
Resident Evil 4 is just sublime. The combat still packs a punch even to this day. It feels amazing and it allows you to approach different situations in a variety of ways. The game also just manages to stay true to the traditional fixed camera angle survival horror entries that came before by sticking to the same core values that made those games so tense and engaging. It may have some elements that havenā€™t aged fantastically, but it still plays well and provides a great experience for any budding survival horror fan. Itā€™s a shame that because of this game, the series went off the rails for a while as some of the next entries just focused on the action. (For the record, I liked Resi 5 a lot.)
Interestingly enough, Resident Evil 4 doesnā€™t really get any of the stigma that comes with that fact. Itā€™s still beloved and important. Play it yourself sometime and youā€™ll understand why.

Jumping straight to a 1:1 remake of 5 doesn't make sense to me because that game was the big final confrontation with Wesker and most the people who only started playing with the remakes don't really know who he is. Separate Ways ending on a confrontation between him and Ada makes a lot of sense to me. They should use it to set up a more Ada focused game with Wesker continuing to hunt her down. She could manipulate Chris and Jill to get involved to take the heat off her creating an alternate RE5
This was also my thinking. It makes absolutely no sense to go straight to an RE5 remake without at least remaking Code Veronica first. I would probably say that about 30-40% of the people buying these remakes haven't played the originals. There are so many new fans that have been brought in by these games that it's kind of insane. It'd be stupid for them to just go into RE5 and be like "sorry new fans you should've been keeping up with the MYRIAD OF STUPID BULLSHIT this series has been doing for 25 years!!!!!"
But, on the same token, I don't actually see them remaking Code Veronica. I don't see that as a thing that's going to happen, because I don't see them going backwards in time. Or -- if they do remake Code Veronica, they're going to drastically change it, and instead of the game taking place in early 1999, it'll probably take place closer to RE4 -- because the point of remaking Code Veronica at all would specifically be to lead into RE5, so it'd be stupid to retain the 10-year gap between the two stories.
And, in that case, you could probably tie Code Veronica to this whole thing -- assuming that Ada actually gets away from Wesker somehow. After all, it never really got explained how Claire got the information she did in order to go to Paris at all, much less how she was able to get into an active fucking Umbrella facility. And, considering the fact that RE4make did not at all say that Umbrella was finished the same way OG did, chances are that Umbrella is actually still around, and they could very well make a change like that to CV. (Okay, well, I know Luis says "Umbrella's done for; you don't have to worry about them anymore" but boy does he not sound confident at all when he says that. Will be interesting to see if he's aware that Wesker was the one who sent Ada to retrieve the Amber, and if that has anything to do with Luis's change of heart.)
If Capcom was smart, they'd flesh out Lost in Nightmares and turn it into its own game. And that's something that Ada can be slotted into pretty easily if/when she gets caught by Wesker at the end of Separate Ways. She could be the prototype for what Jill eventually becomes in RE5, instead of that shit just kind of... coming out of nowhere and everyone being like "okay that's a thing, I guess." oh my god imagine an infected Ada hunting you down in a game Lisa Trevor style I'D SHIT MY WHOLE FUCKING ASS, BRO
But this is all just spitballing and speculation. We won't have any idea what to expect until Separate Ways actually comes out and we see what Capcom actually did with it.
I'm gonna put money down that we're going to see Separate Ways at the Playstation Showcase on Wednesday. So, let's see what happens then!
