K11: Humanoid Woman – Part I

When ambassadors from her home planet of Dessa arrive on Earth, Niya stows away on the ship taking them back to their homeworld.  She and the humans arrive to find Dessa almost entirely devoid of life and run by a corporation selling gas masks and bottled air. After some research, the Earthlings discover a way to clean up the planet’s atmosphere, but the CEO of the gas mask company, the greedy and callous Turanchox, will stop at nothing to maintain his stranglehold on Dessa.  Niya’s powers, which her creator intended would save the planet, may just be what he needs to destroy her companions. He just needs to find the control circuit.

This is a complex film with a hell of a lot to say and a lot for me to get my analytical teeth into, so I’ve decided to stretch this review out into two pieces.  This week I’ll discuss Per Aspera ad Astra as a movie with effects, performances, and so forth, and take a look at its worldbuilding and storytelling.  Next week, I will delve into the movie as a piece of Soviet propaganda.

The Russian movies that appeared on MST3K tended to be better than they’re given credit for (probably the really bad Russian movies were never exported to the west in the first place) and Per Aspera ad Astra is not an exception.  There are parts of it I absolutely love.  The worldbuilding in particular is beautifully done, with small moments used to establish big pictures.  When the cosmonauts in the opening scene find a strange vessel in space, they are able to look it up in a catalogue and find no matches for it – this tells us eloquently and with no clunky dialogue that this is a future in which we’ve had contact with multiple civilizations among the stars.  The utter everydayness of space travel is established by having a spaceport that looks and sounds just like a modern airport, and makes the audience marvel at the fact that here in the twenty-first century, humans have learned to fly and no longer think anything of it.

The special effects are lovely.  They’re not perfect, but they’re good enough, and their purpose is to tell the story rather than to make the audience go, “wow!”  The composite shots aren’t great, but the miniatures are nice.  Planet Dessa is just a bunch of industrial sites filmed through an orange filter but it gets the idea across.  Niya’s powers are edited with abrupt cuts and tight focus, which make them feel jarring and out of place – later, when we see her on Dessa, the edits are smoother because this is where she belongs.  The only thing that’s really bad is the octopus alien in the tank, which gets worse the closer we look at it. It looks like a dude with a sheet of latex draped over him, which is of course exactly what it is.  A puppet would have been way better.  This creature is irrelevant anyway, being nothing but intrusive comic relief – though the scenes with Vasily the cat are actually pretty funny.

The best effect in the movie are the zero-gravity sequences, which are magnificent.  They’re the equal of anything in Gravity or Apollo 13, without any computer trickery or the need to film in freefall – instead, they’re done in a neutral buoyancy tank, like the one NASA uses to train astronauts.  The ingenious thing is that the only zero gravity environment in the film is on the dead spacecraft from Dessa, which has no power and is full of dust and debris from the explosion, which naturally makes it look smoky and dim… as if it’s all underwater!  Something that could have been an obvious trick actually adds to the atmosphere instead.

There’s an interesting escalation of the sci-fi elements in this film. For most of the first half of the movie we’re on the Lebedev family’s estate, which is a peaceful and pastoral place. All the farm work is done by robots, but the only robot we see is the amusingly humanoid one that serves as a butler of sorts, and there’s very little to tell us we’re actually two centuries in the future.  Later, the speculative elements increase in importance, as we meet the octopus alien and go back into space, and finally Dessa itself, with its orange sky and its monsters, is something that could only exist in a sci-fi movie.  No matter how weird and esoteric this movie gets, it’s all rooted in the ordinary. The fact that we spent so much time with normal people on Earth reminds us that there are normal people everywhere – even on dying planets and ocean worlds of octopus aliens.

Roger Ebert once said of My Big Fat Greek Wedding that everybody in it looked like a real person – that this was not some alternate universe in which Anne Hathaway is considered awkward and nerdy.  Per Aspera ad Astra is like that, too. Even characters who are supposed to be attractive, like Sergei’s son Stepan and his friend Selena, are very ordinary-looking by Hollywood standards.  Thus they should be: this is a story about normal people doing what their world considers to be normal things.  The various crew members on the spacecraft look tired and occasionally bored or frustrated by their duties, as people would when this is just their nine-to-five. The workaday feeling of the people and places, the functionality of the sets and the costumes, remind me of Alien – this world is science fiction to us, but not to the people who live there.

It’s hard to judge performances in a language I do not speak, but I was very impressed by Yelena Metyolkina as Niya.  She is physically perfect for the part, with large eyes, fair colouring, and a slim, bony build that make her look a little alien to begin with.  Throughout the first part of the movie Niya is almost totally mute, but Metyolkina makes that silence speak volumes: we see that Niya is afraid of her own powers and overwhelmed by the abundance of life all around her on Earth.  She imparts her emotions through tiny twitches of her face and body.  When we first meet her, she does very little but sit in a chair with her knees tucked up to her chest – as she opens up emotionally, she also opens up physically, permitting herself to move around and take up space.  Later, when she is frightened or vulnerable, the curled posture returns.

It’s really remarkable how much her appearance changes when she starts wearing wigs.  She still looks odd, but the simple presence of hair softens her quite a bit and you can believe she would blend into a crowd in ways she wouldn’t with the buzz cut that is apparently natural to her.  Even with the wig on, though, Metyolkina manages to include moments that remind us Niya is not an earthling and will never quite fit into this world, no matter how much she learns.  She can act human, but it really is just an act.

The movie also does an excellent job of portraying equality between the sexes.  We meet several women and all of them are respected as the intellectual equals of the men.  Dr. Ivanova is an authority in her field and while Sergei argues with her about how Niya should be treated, he bows to her insistence on security features for his home, and allows her to study Niya’s brain and the cybernetics in it.  Only once does he say something disrespectful, and she immediately calls him on it and makes him apologize.  Sergei’s mother is an obstetrician, also well-regarded and with her services in high demand.  Stepan’s friend Selena is a bit of an annoyance with her crush on him, and says some insensitive things to Niya, but she is not the empty-headed ditz cliché would demand.  The only place where there’s an obvious inequality is in the all-male spaceship crews.

On all these many levels, Per Aspera ad Astra is an absolutely beautiful, well-made, and thoroughly enjoyable film.  I admit that I probably think it’s better than it is because I’m comparing it to all the many bad movies I watch, but I was absolutely enthralled by the visuals, the story, and the complex and conflicted character of Niya.  I think this is most likely why MST3K never re-visited Humanoid Woman the way they did some of the other KTMA films.  There’s just not that much to make fun of.

1. Could you introduce the work experience of both of you? When did you two begin to form the team to work together on creativity?

We both have quite a long advertising background, and one thing we have in common is that when we started we did not take advertisement very seriously, at least at first, being more interested into art creation.

In the nineties, if you aspired to exhibit artwork in galleries, it had to stay "secret". So both of us entered the advertising world almost "by accident". After finishing his studies at Penninghen art school, Philippe started painting and installed his atelier in Mesnilmontant district in Paris with no heating. Living and breathing only for his art. Still today he is the one who draws all our scripts, and it is important for us to keep it that way since it is the very first contact we have with clients to seduce them with our stories.

I take care of the writing. I started as a photographer hesitating between photo- journalism and fine arts after having passed a master in Philosophy, but absolutely passionate by all forms of photography. We where both introduced to the advertisement world almost by chance. We did not know each other at that time. On my side I had become a studio still life photographer working mainly for luxury brands and cosmetics subjects. One day Philippe called me and asked if I was interested to do some "food tests" for the brand, and I must admit I was not too excited about it.

Food was not really glamorous in those days...it was called "alimentary photography". Restaurant Chefs where not considered like the Rock Stars they are today, and I cared more about my personal research considering advertisement like a lovely job, but not like a finality, even though I was lucky enough to work for beautiful brands like Hermes, Gallery Lafayette etc... In the end it was a revelation. I discovered a completely new world into which I had a total creative freedom, which was not at all the case for others kind of advertised subjects. Usually Art directors had no clue about what to do with food, and it was very much 'comedy' orientated as they felt more confortable doing that. It was not the case of Philippe who already believed that there was a lot do in this field and really tried to bring the visuals to a very artistic level. We inspired a lot of other food brands with our images, and the brand became a real visual reference for food. Finally we ended up becoming food specialists, but it had never been our initial projects. We collaborated together for 15 years always trying to focus as much as possible on textures. Food can be naturally ugly and somehow you need quite a lot of experience to master it. We noticed at that time that the food film industry was still surfing on a quite archaic imagery, where the heroes where definitely not the food. In parallel amazing cook books where being printed as editors understood there was a huge market in selling this very artistic food approach. I did 36 books and had the chance to meet these amazing Michelin star chefs who where all desiring to do their proper "food manifesto". It was part of their "business plan" to do such books. A necessity for them that made photographers very happy.

The brand we where working for was only doing print, but one day they asked us to film some recipes for viral videos. They where short on budget but we where given "carte blanche". We just loved doing them, and applied our print workflow to this new experience. We where both passionate about films in our personal life. I was interested in doing experimental research around cinematic experiences inspired by people like Stan Brakhage or Maya Deren. Philippe was spending a lot of time in contemporary art galleries watching artists using video as a medium. Strangely the brand hardly used these film recipes we did for them, and it stayed completely confidential until we decided to post them all in one batch on Vimeo. It became like a tsunami: phones started ringing all the time, and many production companies scouting on Vimeo made us tons of propositions. It all went really quickly, and a year later, Philippe naturally quit his job as creative director at DDB, and on my side I switched from still-life photography to film directing.

2. Which clients do you serve currently?

Our website is built like a simple blog, so the very first page represents our actuality and the clients we lately served.

So what's really remains is the quality of the CRAFT. Our background in print photography really helped us here. I have always been passionate by the digital world and started working early with computers. We try to control in-house as much as we can: compositing, post production and coloring. Our workflow is very direct and since we don't have "a complex post-production pipeline" our approach is very "boutique" in a way. We do hire some digital artists, but they come to work in our studio under our supervision before the film presentation.

We do a lot of this post production job directly on the set: we have great people around us helping us to achieve "live" what is usually done a few weeks later, which is quite an unusual workflow, and spend the nights coloring the clips to be able to show them the next day.

What inspires us most is graphics, architecture, contemporary art, constructivism, Bauhaus, Melies (a French director of the beginning of the century creating illusion) and I am forgetting a lot of other things. Being two "brains" enlarges the perspectives and the approaches. We don't use any DOP, so it's really a duo work.

Philippe and I have very different personalities and skills, and strangely it works really well. But what really unifies us is a desire for elegance and fluidity. We have been too much categorized as "graphic" directors, and that saddens us a bit because we are very much about filming "sensuality". This is probably due to our long collaboration for Marks & Spencer, and to the number of films we did for them.

Our camera angles are usually very simple, frontal and direct. We do have an in-house Kuka robot, but actually don't use it so much, considering that the most important part of our job is composition, more than just a robotic technical achievement.

The editing is the other part into which we have put a lot of energy. The rhythm is not only achieved by the editing skills, but also by the use of visual patterns within the individual clips. We don't "contemplate" too much with long travellings, our work is all about action and the smart ways we have to find in order to animate our textures. And finally the transitions within clips are to our eyes as important as the clips themselves, and we always look for little tricks in order to help the editor's work.

3. Why do you want to be specialized in food films and why began? What’s the benefits of working in this specialized area? How is this area special among creative films?

Food was up to quite recently an unexplored territory. This is what makes it fascinating for us. We are artists using food as our playground. Being French also means that we have a cultural respect for it. Colors, shape, complexity of textures, infinite visual associations and concatenation, and in a certain way "porn".

4. What kind of experience can you share about food films making? What is the critical thing when making them? Could you explain with 1-2 examples?

One of the critical point is always Time management. When you work with textures you are always surprised by the fact that you cannot really know in advance what shots are going to take more time than others. When you have a long shooting on multiple days your can "deal" with a certain time-elasticity, much better than a single day shoot, when you know that in the same day, whatever happens, you have to "deliver".

We have to obtain the "visual miracle" in a very short time and sometimes it just does not happens, and you can feel the production team and clients become stressed. We learned how to deal with that quite well. Experience will help of course, but sometimes a simple action like just filling a glass of wine in front of the camera can become a nightmare. Of course one could rely on robotics to do that, but then you might lose all the beautiful accidents that can make the quality of the shot. So it's all about making the right choices at the right time.

The same critical point goes when writing the scripts. We have to constantly evaluate the "is-this-going-to-be-possible?". It's great to have ideas, but they have to be somehow realistic and credible, and sometimes we are not really sure of way the texture will behave. There is a lot of randomness that we don't control. We often start over and over again to get the right movement or action. We do work with some great SFX teams that we constantly challenge with our crazy ideas, as we took an ideological posture with Philippe not use 3D, and to always film everything for real. Many people think we use 3D, but I can assure that we don't. We do composite a lot though.

5. Why do you think your work is attractive to the audience and help the brand grow? Can you share one of your favorite works?

I think that what attracts people to our work is that we are often "on the edge of credibility".

We play a lot with illusion, like a magician who will suddenly speed up a gesture to hide the tricks. The rhythm will help us to create this magic. For example we also very often defy gravity, or normality, in order to give a sense of quirkiness. Make it a bit "weird" to get more appeal or unexpectedness. 7. How do you usually allocate work between you two and collaborate with other members in your company? How’s your creativity making process usually?

We both do everything, it's democracy again. We try to put our ego's on the side of our relation.

We do fight a lot though to defend our personal vision of the film, but this is what makes our treatments so rich.

We usually take two days to write a script. The first day is only dedicated to brainstorming, and we throw as much as ideas as we can. Phillipe does quick drawings as we

speak to keep it as a memo. The next day he does the drawings, always in black and white. I love the simplicity of his style, and he really has a camera in the eyes. His drawing treatment is very different of what would provide a rough-man or illustrator . I take care of the writing, and I am extremely precise in our explanations. It's the main secret to win bids. We also try to control as much as we can the art direction of the treatment, and exchange a lot with the creative team doing the lay-outs in the production house. 8. Could you tell me an unforgettable thing during you two’s collaboration?

'Post Up’ Developments: Animating Typography

In this post, I’m going to be looking at my personal developments of the ‘Post Up’ workshop, where I wanted to try my hand at animating typography, and make a short video inspiring creatives to create!

Under the Influence is about this idea of independence, of making things that we find exciting and look at work that we personally are inspired by. Having produced a few variants of my typographical posters in class, I wanted to take my developments into my specialist area in Graphic Arts - animation. Inspired by Anthony Burrill’s powerful use of typography, and the hand-drawn animated credits of the short animated film ‘Bush Adventures” by Adult Swim, I wanted to make a short animated version of my hand-lettered poster. In order to do this, I needed to make a set of hand-rendered versions of my message ‘make cool shit’ using brush and ink, and then scan these into Photoshop to begin the animation process.

My first action was to create an extensive set of hand-lettered words, exploring different and similar ways of writing the words ‘make’, ‘cool’ and ‘shit.’ I separated these in order to have a clear visual flow between each example, and to group them easily. Instead of writing the entire phrase out every time, I could develop some short-term muscle memory and work on producing a consistent visual style over several attempts. With this, I had a basic idea for each word, but I wanted to experiment and play around a bit, looking at the different effects different sized brushes would create.

The initial idea was to have it simply be an animated version of my hand-rendered poster, but through experimentation and development, this soon changed quite dramatically. The first word, ‘make’, kept with the quick, energetic brush style - but the others developed into other, more creative ideas. With each word, I played around with shape, leading, tracking and line quality - the most important elements of hand-rendered typography. With this experimentation, I found that I could drastically change the meaning just with a different approach to shape and line thickness, from the loose and energetic to slow, structured and robotic.

Hand-lettering has always been something that I’ve somewhat avoided doing in previous projects, simply because I prefer working with a Sharpie more than a brush when it comes to type. However, I’ve found that it’s actually quite engaging and relaxing, as a graphic artist. There’s no pressures or planning when approaching hand-lettering as a craft. As I mentioned in a previous post, there’s a certain appeal that lies in hand-rendered typography with a brush and ink, a simplicity that really lends itself to animation. As a graphic artist, I find it to be quite freeing compared to using a fine liner or digital typeface - there’s a freedom of line quality, pressure and shape when you use a brush; I’m able to create both sharp, precise lines and free-flowing, loose marks.

Something that I really embraced in this development session was the imperfect nature of each brush. Whilst some made a precise, confident and singular mark, others had estranged bristles which resulted in a “ghost” line or subtle echo, giving the word a unique visual flair. Whilst I didn’t actually use these examples in the final animation, they are exciting tests which allowed me to explore this idea further, and resulted in my own hand-lettered typeface.

Additionally to the final animated sequence, I was able to produce my own type-face, which would allow me to make a personal banner for this blog. I’m an art student after all, so my blog should reflect that. The blocky, square and robotic visual language of the font was a result of the brush - which fortunately had a clear divide between a small collection of bristles. This gap allowed for the striking white space in each letter, and the large brush resulted in a square, blocky shape to each character. Looking at the typeface now, it’s clear to me that I was inspired, atleast partially, by the typography from the show Mr Robot, a subject that I analysed in the previous project. It’s a mix of the 80s retro video-game aesthetic and a bold, powerful shape style which makes my font quite visually exciting, I think.

Producing my own typeface was something I identified in a previous blog post, and allowed me to develop my confidence and skills in typography and hand-lettering. Whilst not instantly relevant to my interest in animation, I eventually would use typeface in the final video, in place of my brush-aesthetic examples. There’s a power, a dynamic and exciting bold aesthetic to the font which I felt worked really well with my message.

Apart from my newfound love of hand-lettering, I wanted to produce the type strictly by hand in response to Anthony Burrill’s ‘analogue brain’ and the clearly hand-drawn aesthetic of Bushworld Adventure’s closing credits. The energetic and rapid ‘breathing’ type gives the credits a real sense of energy, life and excitement. It’s a subtle touch, but one that instantly communicates to the audience a love of movement and animation.

It’d be much easier to simply have static type as credits, as most films do - but the film was created by the programming block Adult Swim, which focuses on presenting original animated and live action programming with experimental, unorthodox, adult and controversial direction. It’s “your late-night home for animation”, and thus has become an icon in animated programming. This is something that I will look at further, but what I’m saying is it’s a channel which celebrates animation - so they will animate credits, to communicate their love of the craft. Not only this, but it’s inherently creative and energetic - the exact effects I wanted my typographical poster to have.

Having created sets of hand-lettered type and characters, I proceeded to scan them into Photoshop, and carry out some simple clean up jobs, playing around with levels of black and white to produce a final result ready for animation. The actual animation process was quite simple, using the Frame Animation tool in Adobe Photoshop to flicker between the hand-lettered type. Initially, I was going to simply use all the brush-lettered examples and flick through these, however, the chattering between frames was too distracting and jarring to the overall piece. 

Chattering is movement which occurs in hand-drawn, frame by frame animation - a secondary movement caused by the image or type not aligning perfectly with the previous and next frame. It can be a nice touch to animation, something which communicates the craft to the viewer - in comparison to the sleek, smooth animation of 3D digital animated movies such as Pixar, where the process is almost untouchable. However, whilst chattering can be a good thing - it can also be jarring to the viewer. If a character constantly changes shape, or a word suddenly bolts to the left in one frame, the secondary movement actually distracts from the intention of the animation. This is something that I struggled with concerning “shit”, which simply did not transition between frames in a visually pleasing manner. It was my use of both small and capital letters, and extreme variety in composition, which resulted in the animation looking very childish and jolting to the eye. At this point, the first word, ‘make’ was complete, and I was still trying to use the various examples I had created with a brush. 

This just wouldn’t work with the type that I had created, so I decided to use my blocky typeface as a solution to this problem. With my many attempts at creating this robotic and retro typeface, I had enough characters and variations to make several versions of the word - and with this, I was able to make an exciting, chattering type animation!

With “cool”, I wanted to experiment with the digital liquify tool, which allowed me to warp each image to my liking. This is something that I briefly looked into with my digitial type posters, and wanted to complete this line of enquiry with an animation. The word lends itself to ideas of flow, lucid and loose - so I wanted to make the word warp and almost melt, into a simple animation which I could loop a few times for the final video. This choice was inspired by my loose brushwork when initially trying my hand at lettering in the ‘Post Up’ workshop, it’s something that I felt fit nicely with the themes of the piece, and made for an exciting animation.

Having completed the animations in separate Photoshop files, I exported each into an mp4 file and composed them into a final video in Premiere Pro. Here, I added a suitably exciting and loud soundtrack which I could then edit to, making sure each beat of the track was met with the next edit. As a process, I actually really enjoy editing. It’s something that I want to get better at, but also something which I find interesting and incredibly rewarding when you sit back and watch an animation timed perfectly to exciting music. As an animator just starting out, editing will be something that I will likely be doing myself, or with a small group of like-minded creatives - so it’s a good idea to start practicing now. With this, the Scrappers process video and the ‘Isle of Dogs’ exhibition film that I’m planning on making , I’m developing my understanding of the process considering timing, sound, visuals, and pacing.

Working on the monochromatic visual language of my hand-rendered poster, I wanted to keep to the black and white minimal visual style to the animation. Initially, my idea was to have each word flashing black and white at the same time, but I thought this would have been quite reckless considering any photoepileptic audiences who might be watching. The animation will be published on image sharing social media site Instagram, which has an auto-play feature - meaning there would be no warning to those suffering from the condition. It’s not a rare thing, so I ultimately scrapped the idea and instead opted for a shifting scheme for each word - white on black, black on white and then finally white on black again. It’s a simple approach, but one which successfully keeps those ideas of creative energy and excitement, as a result of moving type, striking backgrounds and loud, inspiring music.

As a practical development, I think it works well. It’s exciting, loud and attention-grabbing. The rapid chattering type gives the piece that idea of movement and energy, embracing a loose and fluid animation style. It’s short, but I feel it communicates my enthusiasm for animation and graphic arts, even with the subtle pun of “join the movement”. It’s meant to inspire artists to start creating, and I think the striking visual style and powerful music work to help achieve this.

It draws clear visual inspiration from my original poster, but also the ideas of designer Anthony Burrill and the chattering type aesthetic of many animated productions, but specifically the recent Bushworld Adventures from Adult Swim. I think the three animated words work the best, in terms of chattering, fluid motion - possessing an energy and life which is practically exactly what I had imagined. The final shot, though, promoting the hashtag and ‘join the movement’ looks somewhat flat and jarring. It works for a quick animation, yes, but both type examples suffer from a stilted movement. This was due to me only creating two different compositions, and simply flashing between the two doesn’t create the same fluidity as the earlier examples. If I had created several copies, the movement would be much more natural, and not the artificial blink it is now. Ultimately, though, this is a minor problem - on the whole, I think I was able to make an exciting animation from playing with typography. Also, the piece ends with an action - #makecoolshit is displayed blinking on screen, encouraging artists to do the same. It’s a way of engaging my audience and bringing them into the conversation. This idea of a driving action, after having watched a video, is an important concept in today’s video-obsessed culture. Asking viewers to comment, like, share or subscribe is a way for the audience to respond and impact the work artists create. It’s a way for creators to keep in contact with their audience, but also lets the audience be a part of the creative process.

As far as developments go, this is the end of the road for ‘Post Up’. I’ve looked at Anthony Burrill in detail, produced a variation of typographical posters and produced a motivational animated sequence based on these posters, incorporating visuals and sound editing. Animating typography is something that I’d never tried before, but it’s definitely something that I will be incorporating into whatever I decide to make for the FMP. Whether its a short film or reel of animations, I’ll always need to add credits - and I will make sure to animate them by hand. With this, there’s a certain love of animation and creating as a whole, that is communicated to your audience - a subtle touch which adds another layer to the work. My focus now will shift to generating ideas for my own independently-led project in Graphic Arts, in the form of mind maps and notes. I’ve discussed some initial ideas in an audio log, and now I’m going to build upon these into four separate potential ideas for projects.
