Our Long, Arduous Attempt To Watch 'Case,' And Why Some Classic Movies Seemingly Just Vanish
"It is all that you longed for. It is nothing you'd anticipate." That's the slogan that graced cinema banners in 1985 for the film Cocoon, the Ron Howard film that would proceed to turn into the fifth most noteworthy earning film of that year and win two Oscars (Best Supporting Actor and Best Visual Effects). That banner slogan is, maybe, fitting in that in case you're dreaming about watching Cocoon at the present time, not exclusively is it all that you longed for, you're simply must continue dreaming – in light of the fact that Cocoon isn't accessible for you to watch. Anyplace. One of the most pervasive motion pictures of the '80s is simply gone. Evaporated. Mysteriously absent on any stage in the time of streaming, a second in time where apparently everything is accessible inside seconds by means of the press of a couple of catches.
It was abnormal planning, in light of the fact that the day I chose I needed to rewatch Cocoon without precedent for I can't recall how long was the day preceding Wilford Brimley passed on. Thus, my worthless endeavors to watch this film were met, the following day, with taking off accolades highlighting film cuts from a film that is difficult to track down – including one from Ron Howard himself* – for a film I needed to observe considerably more at this point.
*What's extraordinary about the scene that Howard tweeted is, in setting to Brimley's genuine age at that point, it's really interesting. Brimley's Ben Luckett is telling his grandson, David, who is 11, that they plan on leaving with the outsiders to go to a world with no demise, yet not seeing David any longer is providing Ben opportunity to stop and think. Presently, in the watcher's psyche, we are thinking, admirably, what amount time do they have left together in any case? Be that as it may, as a general rule, Brimley experienced an additional 35 years after this film, so the line to this 11-year-old child truly could have been, "Look, David, I'd just be around until no doubt about it."
So how about we back up for a moment. Since the pandemic hit the United States in full power back in March, I've been on, what currently appears as though, a ceaseless film long distance race. A great deal of the films I haven't seen previously. A great deal of them, similar to Cocoon, are films I haven't found in a very long time. Occasionally, I'll go over a film that isn't promptly accessible by means of a real time feature and each time I end up astonished in light of the fact that, generally, these aren't dark titles. Be that as it may, I'm much more shocked when a film isn't on those real time features, nor is it accessible to lease on iTunes or Amazon. That is the point at which I end up very confused.
Also, this has happened a couple of times throughout the most recent couple of months. I took a stab at watching Mannequin, which is mysteriously absent, despite the fact that Mannequin 2: On The Move is in that spot on iTunes fit to be leased whenever. In spite of the fact that the first Mannequin is by all accounts accessible on-request to DirecTV clients, and if that is a type of select arrangement, it at any rate kind of clarifies its nonattendance. Notwithstanding, I comprehended this by simply purchasing a cheap Blu-beam. This situation rehashed itself when I attempted to observe Less Than Zero and Johnny Dangerously. The main contrast being neither of those motion pictures have been delivered on Blu-beam, so I needed to depend on purchasing genuinely economical DVD duplicates.
In any case, the thing pretty much all the motion pictures I just referenced, none of them were top-five earning films of the year as was Cocoon. This would resemble Fast and Furious 7 being difficult to track down later on.
From the outset, I did what I generally do: I checked the web to check whether Cocoon was on any of the streaming stages. It was most certainly not. At that point I went to iTunes and, abnormally, Cocoon: The Return sprung up, yet not the first. I attempted Amazon, no karma. I even attempted YouTube, which at times has motion pictures in full that the studios only sort of abandoned, however no. And furthermore, it wouldn't bode well to dump a major film like Cocoon onto YouTube. (However, in the event that you need to watch the Kenny Rogers vehicle Six Pack, well, you're in karma).
I scoured the web for anything about this and went over a GQ piece from December about outstanding motion pictures that aren't accessible on streaming, and it makes reference to how Cocoon is difficult to track down, so in any event it lightened my feelings of trepidation that I was simply by one way or another missing something.
From that point I simply figured I'd simply do my helpful stunt of requesting the Blu-beam and it'd before long be on its way and I'd without further ado be watching Cocoon in excellent HD. All things considered, actually no, not all that snappy. It turns out Cocoon's 2010 Blu-beam is currently no longer available. Also, since Cocoon is as yet a genuinely well known film, it's not modest, drifting around $100. (On the off chance that you go looking through yourself, don't be tricked by the tolerably valued Blu-beams, those are all locale 2 and you'll require a Blu-beam player from that district to watch it. There are many negative Amazon surveys from irate Cocoon fans grumbling their circles don't chip away at their players.) As much as I needed to see Cocoon, I would not like to burn through $100. At last – at long last – I found a Cocoon DVD from 2004 on eBay and purchased that for $25. At the point when it showed up, it was one of those DVDs that has the full-screen variant on the other side of the plate. It's 2020 and this is the means by which I watched Cocoon.
Anyway, this all look bad to me and I needed a clarification. For what reason was it so difficult for me to discover Cocoon?
Rewatching Cocoon on my tragic 2004 DVD with a full-screen form promptly open, I thought that it was more enthusiastic as a grown-up. There are a ton of subjects about misfortune that I missed as a child when everybody in my family was all still alive and sound. In those days, I thought it was a pleasant film about outsiders. (What's more, in those days, I had no clue Wilford Brimley was just 49 when he recorded the film.) Yes, there are outsiders, driven by Brian Dennehy set for salvage their companions who had been abandoned hundreds of years prior, all encased in covers at the base of the sea off the bank of Tampa. The cases are brought to a pool to gestate, with a symptom being that people who enter the pool are given recuperating powers – as a couple of individuals from a retirement home nearby before long acknowledge in the wake of sneaking in and utilizing the pool.
The scene that truly got me was — after various inhabitants of the retirement home were welcomed by the outsiders to leave with them, promising a universe of no sickness or passing (sounds truly great!) — youthful David sees his grandparents (Brimley and Maureen Stapleton) leaving by vessel (driven by Steve Guttenberg) to meet the outsider shuttle. David bounces on board the pontoon ultimately. Afterward, as they are being pursued by the Coast Guard, David bounces in the water so the specialists should protect him and not pursue his grandparents. Brimley's Ben is going to hop in after him, however David tells his granddad, seeing him for apparently once and for all (we will overlook the continuation, which, once more, you can watch), to go and that he's not apprehensive. It's a great, contacting second about bidding farewell to friends and family. I will concede, watching Cocoon just because subsequent to losing my grandparents and my dad, the waterworks hit me. What's more, it's considerably more ridiculous this film isn't accessible for more youthful watchers who have never observed it and who won't buy a 16-year-old DVD off of eBay. I speculate that if Cocoon were on Netflix, or whatever, it would be really well known.
In this way, I began making a few inquiries. I messaged the delegate of Lili Fini Zanuck, a maker on Cocoon. As of this composition, my messages have been not returned. (However, on the off chance that Lili Fini Zanuck has a Google alert on her name set, it would be ideal if you realize that I'd love to converse with you.) I messaged the screenwriter (Tom Benedek), who additionally hasn't yet restored my email. I messaged Ron Howard's marketing expert, who advised me to contact his specialist. sO I messaged Howard's operator, who presently can't seem to restore my email. (I knew this was a longshot in light of the fact that, in the previously mentioned GQ piece from December, it incorporates a tale about somebody who knew Ron Howard by and by who messaged Howard for the appropriate response and he didn't react.) I messaged the delegate for the impacts director, who won an Oscar for this film, and got no reaction. I even messaged somebody who worked in circulation at Fox and, you got it, no answer. Truly, in the entirety of my long periods of expounding on motion pictures I've never been disregarded by this numerous individuals.
At that point I messaged Steve Guttenberg. Through his rep he said he would not like to examine Cocoon, yet inquired as to whether I'd read a content he just expounded on Hurricane Katrina. (As I am composing this piece, he sent me the content. I still can't seem to understand it.)
I likewise addressed agents at Disney. See, there are a great deal of inquiries still about Fox's inventory of movies after the Disney buy. What's more, indeed, Cocoon is a Fox title, however from what I do accumulate this is not the slightest bit identified with Disney. Cover has been lost without a trace some time before the Disney deal was finished. Likewise, if this was Disney keeping down Fox titles (which truly doesn't appear to be the situation, in any event carefully), that wouldn't clarify why Cocoon: The Return can be observed right now as you are understanding this.
Amazingly, the exact opposite thing I heard was an update that they were all the while investigating it. Furthermore, look, I get it. Envision working distantly throughout the previous five months and having somebody come all of a sudden to ask, "Hello, you realize that entire studio you just purchased? For what reason did they not have Cocoon, this one explicit film from 35 years prior, accessible?" Though, I liked that he would state, "Gracious, better believe it, that is only an oversight," at that point hit a catch and Cocoon would be accessible for all of us to lease or purchase right away. (Things being what they are, indeed, in my psyche at Disney home office there's only a catch that says "Casing" and, when squeezed, it appears on all the web-based features.) Though, if another Ron Howard film, Splash, can be on Disney+, I don't see an explanation Cocoon can't be?
(On the off chance that I get notification from any of these individuals, I will refresh thi

K11: Humanoid Woman – Part I
The original title of this film in the USSR was the Latin Per Aspera ad Astra, which translates roughly to Through Hardships to the Stars. It’s a phrase that has inspired a great deal of art and poetry, some of which I will be reblogging as bonus material. The movie is two hours long, and I’ve never seen it even on MST3K, so I have no idea what to expect. Knitting in hand, snack at fingertips, here goes.
A group of cosmonauts discover an unidentified spacecraft, apparently abandoned. They stop to check it out, and find evidence of an unknown catastrophe that seems to have killed all the creatures on board – except for one, who had time to get into a spacesuit. The crew’s first contact specialist, Sergei Lebedev, takes this survivor back to Earth with him to stay with his family. Niya, as they call her, begins to remember flashes of a polluted and hostile world and of a cruel creator, while the humans discover that she not only has frightening telekinetic powers, there appears to be some kind of control circuit implanted in her brain.
When ambassadors from her home planet of Dessa arrive on Earth, Niya stows away on the ship taking them back to their homeworld. She and the humans arrive to find Dessa almost entirely devoid of life and run by a corporation selling gas masks and bottled air. After some research, the Earthlings discover a way to clean up the planet’s atmosphere, but the CEO of the gas mask company, the greedy and callous Turanchox, will stop at nothing to maintain his stranglehold on Dessa. Niya’s powers, which her creator intended would save the planet, may just be what he needs to destroy her companions. He just needs to find the control circuit.
This is a complex film with a hell of a lot to say and a lot for me to get my analytical teeth into, so I’ve decided to stretch this review out into two pieces. This week I’ll discuss Per Aspera ad Astra as a movie with effects, performances, and so forth, and take a look at its worldbuilding and storytelling. Next week, I will delve into the movie as a piece of Soviet propaganda.
The Russian movies that appeared on MST3K tended to be better than they’re given credit for (probably the really bad Russian movies were never exported to the west in the first place) and Per Aspera ad Astra is not an exception. There are parts of it I absolutely love. The worldbuilding in particular is beautifully done, with small moments used to establish big pictures. When the cosmonauts in the opening scene find a strange vessel in space, they are able to look it up in a catalogue and find no matches for it – this tells us eloquently and with no clunky dialogue that this is a future in which we’ve had contact with multiple civilizations among the stars. The utter everydayness of space travel is established by having a spaceport that looks and sounds just like a modern airport, and makes the audience marvel at the fact that here in the twenty-first century, humans have learned to fly and no longer think anything of it.
The special effects are lovely. They’re not perfect, but they’re good enough, and their purpose is to tell the story rather than to make the audience go, “wow!” The composite shots aren’t great, but the miniatures are nice. Planet Dessa is just a bunch of industrial sites filmed through an orange filter but it gets the idea across. Niya’s powers are edited with abrupt cuts and tight focus, which make them feel jarring and out of place – later, when we see her on Dessa, the edits are smoother because this is where she belongs. The only thing that’s really bad is the octopus alien in the tank, which gets worse the closer we look at it. It looks like a dude with a sheet of latex draped over him, which is of course exactly what it is. A puppet would have been way better. This creature is irrelevant anyway, being nothing but intrusive comic relief – though the scenes with Vasily the cat are actually pretty funny.
The best effect in the movie are the zero-gravity sequences, which are magnificent. They’re the equal of anything in Gravity or Apollo 13, without any computer trickery or the need to film in freefall – instead, they’re done in a neutral buoyancy tank, like the one NASA uses to train astronauts. The ingenious thing is that the only zero gravity environment in the film is on the dead spacecraft from Dessa, which has no power and is full of dust and debris from the explosion, which naturally makes it look smoky and dim… as if it’s all underwater! Something that could have been an obvious trick actually adds to the atmosphere instead.
There’s an interesting escalation of the sci-fi elements in this film. For most of the first half of the movie we’re on the Lebedev family’s estate, which is a peaceful and pastoral place. All the farm work is done by robots, but the only robot we see is the amusingly humanoid one that serves as a butler of sorts, and there’s very little to tell us we’re actually two centuries in the future. Later, the speculative elements increase in importance, as we meet the octopus alien and go back into space, and finally Dessa itself, with its orange sky and its monsters, is something that could only exist in a sci-fi movie. No matter how weird and esoteric this movie gets, it’s all rooted in the ordinary. The fact that we spent so much time with normal people on Earth reminds us that there are normal people everywhere – even on dying planets and ocean worlds of octopus aliens.
Roger Ebert once said of My Big Fat Greek Wedding that everybody in it looked like a real person – that this was not some alternate universe in which Anne Hathaway is considered awkward and nerdy. Per Aspera ad Astra is like that, too. Even characters who are supposed to be attractive, like Sergei’s son Stepan and his friend Selena, are very ordinary-looking by Hollywood standards. Thus they should be: this is a story about normal people doing what their world considers to be normal things. The various crew members on the spacecraft look tired and occasionally bored or frustrated by their duties, as people would when this is just their nine-to-five. The workaday feeling of the people and places, the functionality of the sets and the costumes, remind me of Alien – this world is science fiction to us, but not to the people who live there.
It’s hard to judge performances in a language I do not speak, but I was very impressed by Yelena Metyolkina as Niya. She is physically perfect for the part, with large eyes, fair colouring, and a slim, bony build that make her look a little alien to begin with. Throughout the first part of the movie Niya is almost totally mute, but Metyolkina makes that silence speak volumes: we see that Niya is afraid of her own powers and overwhelmed by the abundance of life all around her on Earth. She imparts her emotions through tiny twitches of her face and body. When we first meet her, she does very little but sit in a chair with her knees tucked up to her chest – as she opens up emotionally, she also opens up physically, permitting herself to move around and take up space. Later, when she is frightened or vulnerable, the curled posture returns.
It’s really remarkable how much her appearance changes when she starts wearing wigs. She still looks odd, but the simple presence of hair softens her quite a bit and you can believe she would blend into a crowd in ways she wouldn’t with the buzz cut that is apparently natural to her. Even with the wig on, though, Metyolkina manages to include moments that remind us Niya is not an earthling and will never quite fit into this world, no matter how much she learns. She can act human, but it really is just an act.
The movie also does an excellent job of portraying equality between the sexes. We meet several women and all of them are respected as the intellectual equals of the men. Dr. Ivanova is an authority in her field and while Sergei argues with her about how Niya should be treated, he bows to her insistence on security features for his home, and allows her to study Niya’s brain and the cybernetics in it. Only once does he say something disrespectful, and she immediately calls him on it and makes him apologize. Sergei’s mother is an obstetrician, also well-regarded and with her services in high demand. Stepan’s friend Selena is a bit of an annoyance with her crush on him, and says some insensitive things to Niya, but she is not the empty-headed ditz cliché would demand. The only place where there’s an obvious inequality is in the all-male spaceship crews.
On all these many levels, Per Aspera ad Astra is an absolutely beautiful, well-made, and thoroughly enjoyable film. I admit that I probably think it’s better than it is because I’m comparing it to all the many bad movies I watch, but I was absolutely enthralled by the visuals, the story, and the complex and conflicted character of Niya. I think this is most likely why MST3K never re-visited Humanoid Woman the way they did some of the other KTMA films. There’s just not that much to make fun of.
At least, not until we get into the meaning of this story. Unfortunately, when that happens Per Aspera ad Astra starts to get really preachy – like, Avatar levels of preachy. Stay tuned for next week, when I will attempt to unpack the Soviet side of Cold War Propaganda. It’s just as annoying as the American one, even when it looks prettier.

Machines Can Create Artwork, however Can They Jam
Because the CTO of an utilized pc imaginative and prescient firm, I spend the majority of my time overseeing and honing full-stack AI setups that make use of neural networks and pc imaginative and prescient algorithms to establish and analyze the content material of photos and footage. In my spare hours, I play the sax with my jazz quintet, buying and selling off solos, jams and improvisations with the opposite musicians. It is a course of filled with emotion, surprises and communication. I've at all times seen it as a distinctly human enterprise--one impervious to expertise's usurping ambition. Certainly, for a very long time I noticed AI's viability solely via the lens of its utilitarian benefits. The latest deluge of experiments involving neural networks and creativity--everything from writing poetry and designing mid-century furnishings to producing intentionally non-derivative work and creating runway fashions--has began to vary my view. It has made me wonder if the identical method might be utilized to jazz--and to what finish? Was there any profit to creating an AI robotic, program or agent that's able to passing a jazz Turing take a look at, and is that even conceivable with at present's AI cutting-edge? I researched the subject and spoke with specialists on the nexus of AI and music from academia and enterprise, in addition to with a few of my fellow musicians. Here is what I discovered. Some Music Genres Lend Themselves Higher to AI than Do Others A lot has already been accomplished on the intersection of AI and music technology. Tech giants corresponding to Microsoft, Google, IBM Watson and Sony, together with startups corresponding to Aiva and Amper, have commercially obtainable expertise and companies round AI-generated music. Final summer season, YouTube star Taryn Southern launched I'm AI, an album that was created with the assistance of instruments and expertise from Aiva, Amper, Microsoft and IBM. Likelihood is that a few of the soundtracks you hear in shops, elevators, infomercials and video video games is AI-composed. Some is carried out dwell by orchestras from AI-created scores and preparations. Some is in-studio manufacturing fashion of pop music spewed in ultrapolished type immediately from a pc itself. Regardless of a number of human-intervened exceptions, what you in all probability will not hear in these venues and platforms is AI-generated jazz. That is considerably stunning for the reason that typically sudden end result of algorithms would appear to lend itself to the style's improvisatory nature. Then once more, as any skilled jazz musician or membership proprietor can attest, jazz tends to be a labor of affection for performers. It serves an fanatic area of interest viewers. And it could hardly be anticipated to draw the form of enterprise urgency that auto-soundtracking YouTube content material and video video games does. However there are different challenges as effectively. How Deep Is Your Studying? DeepJazz is a 2016 mission by Princeton pc science scholar Ji-Sung Kim that spews out piano solo variations on Pat Metheny's "And Then I Knew." The mannequin was created utilizing the unique Pat Metheny monitor MIDI file as the info supply, the Keras and Theano machine studying APIs, and a long-term brief reminiscence (LTSM) recurrent neural community. Recurrent neural networks (RNNs) are well-liked in at present's AI composition as a result of they study from earlier enter by looping and thus backpropagate on the fly. That stated, conventional RNNs are likely to solely work with brief musical phrases. If you happen to're composing something longer than a ringtone, LTSMs come into play as a result of they're capable of have interaction extra reminiscence and work over the course of a whole track, tackling the general construction, verses, bridges, refrains and so forth. With slightly extra finessing of tempo and dynamics, the expansive melodies and hopping chord progressions that DeepJazz produces might actually go for the actual factor should you heard them on the radio, within the grocery store, or on maintain with customer support. But when offered as a pc or human Turing take a look at question--i.e. was this track created by a human or a machine?--maybe not a lot. Because it was solely skilled on a single track, DeepJazz's output can solely ever produce outcomes that sound just like that one track. What's extra, the output reduces the unique guitar, bass, drums and keyboard instrumentation to only piano. Producing improvs from the unique track, with its authentic instrumentation, can be a way more complicated enterprise. In any case, there is a large distinction between the mounted notes of a piano and the extra malleable prolonged tones of the opposite devices usually related to jazz, corresponding to trumpet, trombone and saxophone. "The thing that makes wind instruments so hard for computers is that you're pumping energy into them all the time, so you have continuous control and jazz players are free to use that control very expressively," says Carnegie Mellon pc science professor Roger Dannenberg, who additionally performs jazz trumpet. "It's not just figuring out what notes to play, but how to play them. You have almost infinite flexibility over vibrato, bending the pitch, and even producing sounds that instruments such as piano simply aren't capable of." Stay Aids Past timbre, dwell efficiency with AI "musicians" brings different challenges. No matter musical style, the advert hoc, real-time communication that takes place between musicians through the collective improvisation of dwell jams merely is not there but between machines and people. The acoustics of a room or efficiency venue that have an effect on sound, the vitality of the viewers and, after all, the visible cues shared between musicians can't be accounted for by any present expertise. It could require refined audio recognition that permits machines to listen to and interpret the opposite devices, superior pc imaginative and prescient to choose up on assorted and refined visible cues, and a few option to sign and talk with the human musicians--all synced up with a real-time improvisatory algorithm. The computing energy alone required to assist these operations can be staggering. A lot research--from a robotic marimba to a Nintendo Wii-activated bebop improvisation generator to present music software program mash-ups able to robotic call-and-response solos with human musicians--has been accomplished on this space, however nothing but pulls collectively the common or common AI equal of a worthwhile human jazz musician. It Do not Imply a Factor if it Ain't Bought That Swing Given a few of the analysis and experiments round artwork created with neural networks skilled on present masterpieces, I usually surprise if the identical could be completed with the music of legendary jazz musicians. Is it potential to recreate the superfast virtuosic bebop jazz solos of Charlie Parker or the minimalist precision of Rely Basie's piano and band? Charlie Parker did play notes, so a few of his tunes have been transcribed into sheet music and MIDI already, and a few even fed to deep studying algorithms. However that is nonetheless not sufficient coaching knowledge to output new Charlie Parker solos carried out by machines in ways in which can be compelling and Turing test-proof. Although instruments exist to parse out particular person instrument tracks from songs, they aren't but adequate to untangle recordings of dwell exhibits, which represent a big portion of a jazz nice's oeuvre. "That's another big signal processing and machine learning problem that's a very active area of research, but it's not a solved problem," says Dannenberg. And that is not even taking into consideration subtleties of tempo, timbre, dynamics, stress, launch, drama and storytelling which might be distinctive to every dwell efficiency and recording. You'd in all probability have to create your individual knowledge set from scratch: Get new jazz musicians to play every instrument in each potential Charlie Parker- or Rely Basie-like approach after which prepare algorithms on these recordings. That method is just like what Amper Music has accomplished for different musical genres. It is too late to get customized samples from Parker or Basie themselves, however not so for Joshua Redman or Kamasi Washington. Consider it as movement seize for audio. Do We Want AI Jazz? For now, a few of the most promising analysis utilizing AI and jazz is that underway on the Protection Superior Analysis Tasks Company (DARPA), which is growing jazz-playing robots to review and advance communication between people and machines, one thing that might be as helpful on stage or at a freeway exit clogged with merging autonomous vehicles as it's on the battlefield. When it comes to AI-generated music, that also appears higher suited to extra musical-score-based genres corresponding to film and classical music, or extremely produced and sometimes synthesized and sample-heavy pop music. I am additionally interested in AI and jazz just because it will be helpful to sometime have an on-demand musical accomplice to jam with in a seamlessly lifelike approach any time of the day or night time, not only for pure enjoyment, but additionally for studying. In any case, how significantly better might music college students hone their abilities if they'd AI-based lecturers that might present instruction and suggestions on their enjoying anytime? It could be a boon to music training and make follow much more sensible. We're nonetheless a approach off from both providing. We nonetheless do not have the slightest concept how you can get these jazz AI musicians to have the ability to both play with or detect the presence of "swing," "emotion" and "soul." Extra importantly, can they improvise--zigging when conventional coaching and music idea would have them zag? As my band's drummer places it: "If you're talking about live improvisation, that gets to the ultimate core of what AI is. That's like having a relationship. It has to be 100 percent real." Ken Weiner on sax with a small jazz ensemble. Credit score: Cambron Carter. Regardless of the world's present love affair with machine studying, it might not be the ultimate method for AI-generated music. "Deep learning in jazz has similarly downplayed the crucial rhythmic, timbral, and textural aspects of music," says College of California, San Diego, music professor and saxophonist David Borgo who, moreover being my pal, additionally wrote an interesting chapter in The Routledge Companion to Jazz Research on improvisation and computer systems. "Research in this area has tended to focus on getting computers to play the 'right notes,' but we are still a long way from designing systems capable of the micro and macro temporal, timbral and textural adjustments necessary to groove together and to develop high-level collective improvisation in an unscripted fashion with human musicians (rather than insisting that human musicians improvise with, or groove to, the computer)." In different phrases, even when I'm fortunate to someday get a robo-Charlie Parker on-demand bandmate, it is nonetheless prone to be a one-sided expertise till we get to the holy grail of human-level common AI. That is definitely why experiencing good Image printer opinions is essential if you want to ensure that the printer that you buy is suitable Using the unit exactly where your shots are taken and stored. The dilemma that you've to ask relies on what unit that you are getting. When you've got an apple iphone, iPod or iPad, the question might be whether or not the printer supports Apple's AirPrint. For those who have an Android cellphone or pill, the dilemma might be whether or not the printer supports Google's Cloud Print. But this issue is relevant only if you would like print your visuals straight from your cellular devices.
As with all new engineering, reception to electronic pictures was not all lukewarm all through its early a long time of introduction. This is a A lot different photo now as the quantity of buyers opting for analog digicam is shrinking to around extinction. Determined by The present point out-of-the-art, it really is argueable that analog digicam still retains few edges but They can be speedily diminishing. The greatest edge that electronic digicam has above its analog counterpart is the more Value successful plus much more practical storage. As opposed to capturing illustrations or photos on film that needs to be developed thereafter, pictures captured using a digital digital camera tend to be stored in SD or Flash memory cards which lessens the price of Every single picture capture to zero. When the maximum storage capability is achieved, the images could be transferred out to the PC as well as space for storing is often resetted to its primary potential. Image preview feature is one other benefit that is frequently touted from electronic cameras. Instantly following Every single graphic capture, a single can perform a quality Examine over the image that has just been taken and if sought after, the picture can just be deleted and retaken.
In deciding for the most effective photo printer, There's a single fundamental matter that is frequently ignored by most consumers. The first thing that the majority of consumers will probably be weighing is actually the price tag that may be attached to the printer. On nearer seem, this upfront Value will not be the most important element that could attract income from buyers' pocket. It can be a standard information that foremost makers for example Canon, would not make the bulk of their take advantage of advertising the printer itself, but with the ink instead. It is actually amusing to know that In spite of this kind of know-how becoming readily available in the general public domain, it is actually a single variable that is definitely mostly overlooked by most shoppers. So, a person need to look at the cost of the ink the printer is applying and the quantity of output that could be churned out of each and every cartridge rather than basically considering the acquisition selling price. With all the know-how continue to evolving consistently, usually do not presume major brand names to become the leader. Even if you find yourself buying a Canon printers, you should definitely browse Canon photo printer critiques and open up on your own to the entire world fotograf warszawa of possibilities. You can find new products released From time to time. And on the earth of engineering, disruptive innovation usually arises from challenger and never the incumbent. Do not which the listing of greatest photo printers for 2013 will definitely be different from that of former calendar year.
Many learners Understanding the art of photography with London Photograph studio retain the services of services experiment with image modifying software package to publish their images in black and white modes.
There is a thing Unique concerning this Model that excites Everybody, even when they hardly ever seasoned the first method of black and white images.
The technology that may be presently beneath thirty several years of age is not really pretty acquainted with the photographic film that was a critical factor of pictures for many years. And Until their grandparents or mother and father have preserved some classic objects in family members households, they may have probably in no way touched the basic 'box camera'.
On the flip side, Many people realize that the origins of photography are traced back to an period when newspapers had monochrome shots and have films were also shot in black and white.
During the yesteryears, the black and white photographers utilised a Specific film, Specific chemical compounds and rinse-clean-dry cycle in two discrete phases: the entire process of building pictures took hours or maybe a couple of days.
Right now, any time you guide a photograph studio for use in London to choose headshots, portraits and various pics, you could however have a black and white Image and the main gain is the time saving. It is way less difficult to perform a photo shoot with Innovative digital cameras and gear.
You not only get the final item immediately but can also publish it and share it with the whole world via social media in seconds.
Even so, when you actually need to offer your B&W images a excellent top quality, a random simply click with the camera won't work. It is sweet to acquire some Expert understanding of the approaches.
Attending a images coaching or workshop may even be helpful. Meanwhile, Here are a few suggestions you can decide on:
Don't hurry: Take into account the course of action along with the medium deeply. The way of thinking for productive B&W pictures needs to be various from colour images.
Preserve that ISO setting lower: Some photographers insist that electronic sound provides a creative impact in B&W photography, much like what 'grain' did inside the film period.
Having said that, this isn't really genuine. This is due to the grain composition of film was distribute over the entire vary of final print. Sounds may be fussy about where it wishes to demonstrate up: and that's generally 'only' while in the shadow stop of your histogram scale. This randomness can make digital sound appear far more like an error than an artistic effects of movie grain.
Do not melt away out the highlights or block up the shadows: This can certainly transpire within the taking pictures phase and in many cases in the processing phase. To avoid burning out the lights and blocking shadows, generally don't forget - If the eyes can observe it, How will you help it become obvious with your photograph? Article-process appropriately.
Make the most of digicam Uncooked structure: To understand the deserves of raw format it is nice to be aware of the peculiarities of dynamic vary. The dynamic choice of a digital camera is its ability to reproduce "An array of tone and brightness values from shadow to spotlight".
Ever For the reason that evolution of digital age the dynamic choice of cameras is lower than that of B&W negative movie. That is now little by little improving upon. Nevertheless, digital camera raw will deliver you the widest range from your digital photo file. In that component, in addition to Some others, it is actually better than the .jpeg structure.
Figure out how to perform with tone: Turning colors into the best shades of gray is the prime art of black and white imaging. Earlier, movie photographers had to progressively develop their techniques on how a particular colour would grow to be a shade of gray when using the shot.
Today any time you produce pictures in colour, you might want to help it become monochromatic only in the article-processing stage - give some imagined on how the colors will change to tone when the image turns into black and white.
You can even realize the right amounts of tone by creating appropriate use of sunshine and brightness in the studio. Specialists presenting London photo studio rental expert services might also tutorial you at exactly the same.
Lastly, if you are attempting to optimise your photography techniques, avoid black and white conversion presets and motion sets. The most effective leads to this way of pictures arrive from the personal creativity and also a histogram.

The Full Interview
Michael Roulier and Philippe Lhomme, directors of foodfilm Interview:
1. Could you introduce the work experience of both of you? When did you two begin to form the team to work together on creativity?
We both have quite a long advertising background, and one thing we have in common is that when we started we did not take advertisement very seriously, at least at first, being more interested into art creation.
In the nineties, if you aspired to exhibit artwork in galleries, it had to stay "secret". So both of us entered the advertising world almost "by accident". After finishing his studies at Penninghen art school, Philippe started painting and installed his atelier in Mesnilmontant district in Paris with no heating. Living and breathing only for his art. Still today he is the one who draws all our scripts, and it is important for us to keep it that way since it is the very first contact we have with clients to seduce them with our stories.
I take care of the writing. I started as a photographer hesitating between photo- journalism and fine arts after having passed a master in Philosophy, but absolutely passionate by all forms of photography. We where both introduced to the advertisement world almost by chance. We did not know each other at that time. It was a golden age for advertisers.Ten years later Philippe was a Creative Director at DDB mainly in charge of an iconic French award winning food brand that French people loved because of the quality of communication and visuals.
On my side I had become a studio still life photographer working mainly for luxury brands and cosmetics subjects. One day Philippe called me and asked if I was interested to do some "food tests" for the brand, and I must admit I was not too excited about it.
Food was not really glamorous in those days...it was called "alimentary photography". Restaurant Chefs where not considered like the Rock Stars they are today, and I cared more about my personal research considering advertisement like a lovely job, but not like a finality, even though I was lucky enough to work for beautiful brands like Hermes, Gallery Lafayette etc... In the end it was a revelation. I discovered a completely new world into which I had a total creative freedom, which was not at all the case for others kind of advertised subjects. Usually Art directors had no clue about what to do with food, and it was very much 'comedy' orientated as they felt more confortable doing that. It was not the case of Philippe who already believed that there was a lot do in this field and really tried to bring the visuals to a very artistic level. We inspired a lot of other food brands with our images, and the brand became a real visual reference for food. Finally we ended up becoming food specialists, but it had never been our initial projects. We collaborated together for 15 years always trying to focus as much as possible on textures. Food can be naturally ugly and somehow you need quite a lot of experience to master it. We noticed at that time that the food film industry was still surfing on a quite archaic imagery, where the heroes where definitely not the food. In parallel amazing cook books where being printed as editors understood there was a huge market in selling this very artistic food approach. I did 36 books and had the chance to meet these amazing Michelin star chefs who where all desiring to do their proper "food manifesto". It was part of their "business plan" to do such books. A necessity for them that made photographers very happy.
The brand we where working for was only doing print, but one day they asked us to film some recipes for viral videos. They where short on budget but we where given "carte blanche". We just loved doing them, and applied our print workflow to this new experience. We where both passionate about films in our personal life. I was interested in doing experimental research around cinematic experiences inspired by people like Stan Brakhage or Maya Deren. Philippe was spending a lot of time in contemporary art galleries watching artists using video as a medium. Strangely the brand hardly used these film recipes we did for them, and it stayed completely confidential until we decided to post them all in one batch on Vimeo. It became like a tsunami: phones started ringing all the time, and many production companies scouting on Vimeo made us tons of propositions. It all went really quickly, and a year later, Philippe naturally quit his job as creative director at DDB, and on my side I switched from still-life photography to film directing.
2. Which clients do you serve currently?
Our website is built like a simple blog, so the very first page represents our actuality and the clients we lately served.
We have a lot of different clients, and we have enlarged our "film perspective" in exploring other field like the cosmetic world.
Usually cosmetic brands would hire purely still life directors specialized in jewelry, watches, or shooting very "static" items. They had a very "contemplative" approach. Almost robotic. We brought "life" and action, avoiding the 3d representations mainly used at that time. Agencies where seduced by our food background and tried to apply this "spirit" to selling cosmetics...they where seduced by our organic approach.
We love also working for cosmetic brands (L'Oréal, Garnier, Yves Rocher, Décleor, Neutrogena) because the visual grammar has to be very metaphoric, so there is a lot of creativity involved in the process, and they are really expecting this from us: "unseen ideas" to illustrate the benefit of the products....
As far as food it stays our main subjects. Our clients are very eclectic. When you shoot food films you have to collaborate with the big agri-food groups like Neslté, Lactalis, Mondelez etc...and the creative validation process tends to be quite heavy. We can vigorously defend our ideas until a certain point, but at one stage "the big machine" can easily "laminate" your creativity. We are used to that. So what's really remains is the quality of the CRAFT. Our background in print photography really helped us here. I have always been passionate by the digital world and started working early with computers. We try to control in-house as much as we can: compositing, post production and coloring. Our workflow is very direct and since we don't have "a complex post-production pipeline" our approach is very "boutique" in a way. We do hire some digital artists, but they come to work in our studio under our supervision before the film presentation.
We do a lot of this post production job directly on the set: we have great people around us helping us to achieve "live" what is usually done a few weeks later, which is quite an unusual workflow, and spend the nights coloring the clips to be able to show them the next day.
2bis. What’s your core concept of making creativity for clients?
What inspires us most is graphics, architecture, contemporary art, constructivism, Bauhaus, Melies (a French director of the beginning of the century creating illusion) and I am forgetting a lot of other things. Being two "brains" enlarges the perspectives and the approaches. We don't use any DOP, so it's really a duo work.
Philippe and I have very different personalities and skills, and strangely it works really well. But what really unifies us is a desire for elegance and fluidity. A lot of food studios sometimes lack this little something related to external input. Our respective personal passions in life keep enriching our professional work.To resume, it's about "good taste" as we say in France.
We have been too much categorized as "graphic" directors, and that saddens us a bit because we are very much about filming "sensuality". This is probably due to our long collaboration for Marks & Spencer, and to the number of films we did for them.
Our camera angles are usually very simple, frontal and direct. We do have an in-house Kuka robot, but actually don't use it so much, considering that the most important part of our job is composition, more than just a robotic technical achievement.
The editing is the other part into which we have put a lot of energy. The rhythm is not only achieved by the editing skills, but also by the use of visual patterns within the individual clips. We don't "contemplate" too much with long travellings, our work is all about action and the smart ways we have to find in order to animate our textures. And finally the transitions within clips are to our eyes as important as the clips themselves, and we always look for little tricks in order to help the editor's work.
3. Why do you want to be specialized in food films and why began? What’s the benefits of working in this specialized area? How is this area special among creative films?
Food was up to quite recently an unexplored territory. This is what makes it fascinating for us. We are artists using food as our playground. Being French also means that we have a cultural respect for it. Colors, shape, complexity of textures, infinite visual associations and concatenation, and in a certain way "porn".
Pornfood meaning that we can induce by the visuals the viewer to "drool" when we film organoleptic textures that provoque desire and satisfaction.
The other challenge was to totally erase human beings. It's more a philosophical and artistic choice than a necessity for us, and every time we are asked to shoot actors we are happy to do it. But to be able to captivate audience without the acting support is a really an interesting direction. The concept of no-hands-films has led us those last years, but we are in constant evolution, and I am sure it will change.
Being specialized in food give us more freedom than working for other subjects. Everybody has to say something about fashion, cloths, talent acting etc...but very few can have a clear vision about how to stage food, and it gives us a real license for creativity. It's a niche, and that's what's great about it.
4. What kind of experience can you share about food films making? What is the critical thing when making them? Could you explain with 1-2 examples?
One of the critical point is always Time management. When you work with textures you are always surprised by the fact that you cannot really know in advance what shots are going to take more time than others. When you have a long shooting on multiple days your can "deal" with a certain time-elasticity, much better than a single day shoot, when you know that in the same day, whatever happens, you have to "deliver".
We have to obtain the "visual miracle" in a very short time and sometimes it just does not happens, and you can feel the production team and clients become stressed. We learned how to deal with that quite well. Experience will help of course, but sometimes a simple action like just filling a glass of wine in front of the camera can become a nightmare. Of course one could rely on robotics to do that, but then you might lose all the beautiful accidents that can make the quality of the shot. So it's all about making the right choices at the right time.
The same critical point goes when writing the scripts. We have to constantly evaluate the "is-this-going-to-be-possible?". It's great to have ideas, but they have to be somehow realistic and credible, and sometimes we are not really sure of way the texture will behave. There is a lot of randomness that we don't control. We often start over and over again to get the right movement or action. We do work with some great SFX teams that we constantly challenge with our crazy ideas, as we took an ideological posture with Philippe not use 3D, and to always film everything for real. Many people think we use 3D, but I can assure that we don't. We do composite a lot though.
5. Why do you think your work is attractive to the audience and help the brand grow? Can you share one of your favorite works?
I think that what attracts people to our work is that we are often "on the edge of credibility".
We play a lot with illusion, like a magician who will suddenly speed up a gesture to hide the tricks. The rhythm will help us to create this magic. For example we also very often defy gravity, or normality, in order to give a sense of quirkiness. Make it a bit "weird" to get more appeal or unexpectedness. We also try to show details that people usually don't really see, emphasizing a certain playfulness with our camera. The slow motion Phantom camera really helps the observation of the unseen.
The other attractive thing is that our scenes are always "in action". The common question for us is "how are we going to activate this image". No time to contemplate, the textures are always animated in order to keep the tension of the viewer.
6. How’s film creativity different from the general creativity making?
To accept to work as a team with other people. Even more, to admit the power of a team, like a football player.
It is much easier for Philippe who is an ex Creative Director used to commission other artists. I am a bit of "a control freak" and that makes me makes me suffer more than him, and probably others too. This is where we are really complementary.
Nevertheless our team is much smaller than a conventional cinema team, and we try to keep this "boutique" home-made atmosphere. The idea is to never lose the "primal vision" of the film, and keep an eye on everything. We always work with the same team, and we all know each other really well, and that gives a lot of fluidity to our relations. When there is a difficulty, we naturally team up all together to find solutions. It's very democratic!
A good team is like a good wine and it's years of maturation. We where lucky to achieve this.
7. How do you usually allocate work between you two and collaborate with other members in your company? How’s your creativity making process usually?
We both do everything, it's democracy again. We try to put our ego's on the side of our relation.
We do fight a lot though to defend our personal vision of the film, but this is what makes our treatments so rich.
We usually take two days to write a script. The first day is only dedicated to brainstorming, and we throw as much as ideas as we can. Phillipe does quick drawings as we
speak to keep it as a memo. The next day he does the drawings, always in black and white. I love the simplicity of his style, and he really has a camera in the eyes. His drawing treatment is very different of what would provide a rough-man or illustrator . I take care of the writing, and I am extremely precise in our explanations. It's the main secret to win bids. We also try to control as much as we can the art direction of the treatment, and exchange a lot with the creative team doing the lay-outs in the production house. Same goes for the mood boards.
8. Could you tell me an unforgettable thing during you two’s collaboration?
Sometimes the shape of an object, a texture or anything else can slowly become sexually evocative. We remember this time when breaking a poached egg was really reminding a close up of a "very different" scene that could have been extracted from an X-rated movie. Nobody was saying anything, but everybody was thinking the same thing. It was at the same time really evident, and somehow quite understated. At one point the producer "played" his job, and said it, which meant that we had to reshoot the whole scene. It was a good laugh for everybody. It's foodporn after all !
We have hundred of anecdotes with our job, but that's another interview.
9. How will Foodfilm or you personally partner with Stink? What do you think you will bring to Stink’s team through this partnership?
We are very excited with this new partnership, and as we are quite easygoing, it should work really well.
Being represented by Stink is a caution of creativity, so we might have to fight less to defend bold ideas. I don't really know if Stink represents a lot of other table top directors in their international "spiderweb"? I think that the food film market is really huge, and still
growing. So if we can fill this gap for them it's really a great win-win association. Let's talk again about it in a year time!

6 Fun Facts About the History of the Alabama Crimson Tide
What incited you to compose your book "Jumper"?
I got a bring in mid-2007, it was the BBC. They stated, "We comprehend you kept journals from when you were in the Falklands strife yet have not understood them yet?" I said yes I did, and I haven't understood them, however, how would you know? They gave me the old, we don't unveil our sources, and so on.
At that point, they stated, " We might want to come and film you perusing them just because and put it on TV." I truly had never understood them, truth be told, all I knew was they were in the space someplace. I pondered it for some time and talked about it with my significant other and chose I would do it. pilot men's grooming
They came and we did it and it went on BBC Breakfast.
At the point when they left, the maker and cameraman said what a splendid story it was, and I should record everything, you know, fill in the holes. Indeed, I hadn't ever pondered it. In any case, I began that night and it just streamed out of me. Day and night for around 10 months, I composed and re-expounded on my jumping life. About the concentrated preparing, the Navy required to turn into a 'Slippery Beaky' assault swimmer. Getting prepared in re-breathers that give out no air pockets, empowering you to harm ships, or work on mines concealed and undetected.
Have any journalists impacted your composition?
I do peruse a great deal yet I wouldn't state anybody affected me. I didn't generally design it. I simply occurred and I discovered I could do it, I could recount to a story.
Do you jump recreationally, and if so which is your preferred plunge site?
I have never done a recreational jump. Indeed, that isn't actually valid. I dragged my child around the pool in Thailand a couple of years back. That is it. In any case, there is a purpose behind it, and that is, I've done a lot of as of now.
In anticipation of composing the book, I broke out the majority of my plunging logbooks, realizing very well indeed I may discourage myself. I began including my hours in an immersion chamber. Over a fifteen-year sat jumping vocation, I did around 900 days, or more than two years, in loads the world over. You can get not as much as that for outfitted theft.
That is 21,600 hours in a chamber you can't walk more than a few paces in, with typically seven other men who might, now and again, smell and sound like nourishing time at the monkey haven. Remove say 100 days for decompression and terrible climate. That leaves us with 19,200 hours or 800 working days.
State a normal jumping day of six hours, and that allows us 4,800 hours or 200 full 24-hour days entirely the water.
Six and a half months either blowing air pockets or in the ringer. Six and a half months wet.
Presently I'm in no way, shape or form the most productive jumper; there are folks out there that either can't get enough plunging or cash, and they would destroy my hours. None of those hours, days, many months even incorporate a large number of air and blended gas jumps I've done. Not that I wish I had accomplished more. Not in the least, that is very enough for me. In such time, have I at any point discovered a gold coin or a virgin wreck?
I've discovered an ice chest in the Irish Sea that I was told while wearing my rigging, was 'unquestionably, 100% completely surely a mine'. I've discovered Spitfire motors in Greece, a Jeep in the South Pacific, and anglers pilots still inside their art, however, I've not so much discovered what I was searching for as a youngster. That bit of riddle is still there, perhaps in light of the fact that I don't have the foggiest idea what it resembles. I know I'm in an inappropriate industry. You are, all things considered, improbable to discover anything secretive in the oil business or chasing for mines.
What was your most noticeably terrible plunging background?
I've had a couple of 'most exceedingly awful jumps.' This was my first regularly plunging knowledge with the Royal Navy (which is in the book).
I missed the morning class about how the air set functioned and what to do in case of coming up short on air. While getting a brisk brief before entering the water I discovered something about 'adjusting'. I thought he implied my ears. Oh dear, he wasn't worried about my ears by any means. In the Navy, in the event that you are wearing an air set, you don't have a check on it. You start your jump with just one jug open and inhale typically until it goes tight and begins to run out. On the off chance that you, at that point open your other full container, the air between the two 'evens out' - you can hear it very well submerged as a tinny murmuring sound. The sound will lessen, and when you close the valve. Presently you have two half-full containers. You inhale down the one container again and do a similar when it gets tight. Presently you have 'evened out twice'; you have about a fourth of your unique air left and you come up. Straightforward!
Basic on the off chance that you know this, at any rate. I missed all that since I was not able or reluctant to control the climate, and was late. The opening of the valve activity was never transferred to me.
I surmise I was around 100 feet out toward the finish of my lifesaver when my air began to go tight. No, it can't be, the central jumper said it should last about 60 minutes. An hour hasn't passed by as of now, has it, and in any case, they would ring me (four pulls), wouldn't they? Now, my short life flashed before me.
I am oversensitive to not breathing, so I did what all balanced, ordinary reasoning individuals would do in this circumstance. I froze. pilot men's grooming
I looked around for my help and finned and dismantled myself to the surface as fast as possible. You are obviously intended to inhale out on a controlled moderate climb or you may give yourself a curve or burst a lung. However, I had nothing to inhale out, my lungs were at that point unfilled. Air hunger, or the inclination to inhale, is without a doubt one of the most grounded human responses we have and you 'will' take uncommon activities to empower breathing once more. Aided by a huge part of adrenalin, initiated by the likelihood of passing on, I hit the surface going maximum capacity and evacuated my cover in one quick development. Truth be told, the veil may even have been off before I broke the surface. Anyway, it was in an altogether amateurish way.
I was voyaging so quick I figure I left the water up to my midsection. That first admission of breath, that sweet taste of air and water was the most profound I have taken so far in my 48 years. Pant doesn't do it equity and I don't figure you can record the commotion I made. It was presumably along the lines of the mating call of a randy caribou. The thing is, I hadn't depended on gravity taking a hold of me now I was quickly out of the water once more, however, it did, and as I descended from my break, I went under once more. This was getting to be excruciating.
The jumpers on the quay saw this thing shooting out of the water at that point vanish once more, and immediately for thought, three of them started pulling me, close by over-hand as quick as possible.
The line I was appended to was tied in an anchor on my shoulder, and with my weight-belt and jugs on I took off dangerously fast towards the pier. My speed was so extraordinary in reality that a bow wave conformed to my head and I got myself submerged and unfit to inhale once more. Just this time I was at a misfortune with respect to what to do to cure the circumstance. As I went out I just trusted I would before long be at the wharf. Indeed, I later discovered that it was my quick and un-padded appearance back at the solid pier that may well have thumped me out.
I came to lying in the recuperation position and spewing over some huge boots. The central jumper was clearly stressed over me and demonstrated his worry by hollering into my face,
'You've not evened out once yet! For what reason didn't you even out?'
'I did clear my ears, boss.'
'Not your ears, you muppet, your containers, same as we did in the study hall toward the beginning of today.'
'I wasn't ... Hurl ... here at the beginning of today.' As the second aiding of dockyard water and leaves and oil came up and out of me everywhere throughout the central's boots, I could see the unfolding of acknowledgment move over his face. 'This was my shortcoming.' pilot men's grooming
To give him credit, however, his frame of mind quickly changed from one of outrage to regretful concern. I was enveloped by a cover and given hot tea and rushed off to sickbay, where I went through a day on twist watch, to check whether anything created, and three days in the clinic, hurling dockyard debris and practically got back-classed from my essential preparing unit for sure. On the off chance that that occurred, I would need to drop back about fourteen days and start again with a totally new admission. I returned the following week however and attempted once more, and consistently for the following ten weeks. Why? Since I was going to pass, it is the main answer I can give.
Is it accurate to say that you are arranging another book?
The upgraded one is practically wrapped up. All things considered, state another 10,000 words. I'm on 111,000 at this very moment. It is a novel. I considered the time we had a Brit plunging legend. Dirk Pitt has had everything his own specific manner excessively long. Along these lines, It's about an Ex Royal Navy Mine Clearance Diver, (Shock ghastliness).
What are you doing now?
Regardless I do some North Sea stuff, when I can't in any way, shape or form maintain a strategic distance from it. Yet, I am fixated on getting this new book wrapped up. I am attempting to get an abstract specialist right now. Truth be told, I'm holding on to hear, 'Yae or Nae' at the present time. On the off chance that he says Yea, I will attempt to compose professionally. I have done a couple of converses with clubs and after supper stuff, principally about plunging. My greatest was at the BSAC yearly gathering. There were around 500 there. pilot men's grooming
About Tony Groom
Conceived in Hillingdon, Middlesex (UK) in 1959, Tony Groom found his interest in the ocean while at Monk's Park thorough school in Bristol. 'Post Up’ Developments: Animating Typography
In this post, I’m going to be looking at my personal developments of the ‘Post Up’ workshop, where I wanted to try my hand at animating typography, and make a short video inspiring creatives to create!
Under the Influence is about this idea of independence, of making things that we find exciting and look at work that we personally are inspired by. Having produced a few variants of my typographical posters in class, I wanted to take my developments into my specialist area in Graphic Arts - animation. Inspired by Anthony Burrill’s powerful use of typography, and the hand-drawn animated credits of the short animated film ‘Bush Adventures” by Adult Swim, I wanted to make a short animated version of my hand-lettered poster. In order to do this, I needed to make a set of hand-rendered versions of my message ‘make cool shit’ using brush and ink, and then scan these into Photoshop to begin the animation process.
My first action was to create an extensive set of hand-lettered words, exploring different and similar ways of writing the words ‘make’, ‘cool’ and ‘shit.’ I separated these in order to have a clear visual flow between each example, and to group them easily. Instead of writing the entire phrase out every time, I could develop some short-term muscle memory and work on producing a consistent visual style over several attempts. With this, I had a basic idea for each word, but I wanted to experiment and play around a bit, looking at the different effects different sized brushes would create.
The initial idea was to have it simply be an animated version of my hand-rendered poster, but through experimentation and development, this soon changed quite dramatically. The first word, ‘make’, kept with the quick, energetic brush style - but the others developed into other, more creative ideas. With each word, I played around with shape, leading, tracking and line quality - the most important elements of hand-rendered typography. With this experimentation, I found that I could drastically change the meaning just with a different approach to shape and line thickness, from the loose and energetic to slow, structured and robotic.
Hand-lettering has always been something that I’ve somewhat avoided doing in previous projects, simply because I prefer working with a Sharpie more than a brush when it comes to type. However, I’ve found that it’s actually quite engaging and relaxing, as a graphic artist. There’s no pressures or planning when approaching hand-lettering as a craft. As I mentioned in a previous post, there’s a certain appeal that lies in hand-rendered typography with a brush and ink, a simplicity that really lends itself to animation. As a graphic artist, I find it to be quite freeing compared to using a fine liner or digital typeface - there’s a freedom of line quality, pressure and shape when you use a brush; I’m able to create both sharp, precise lines and free-flowing, loose marks.
Something that I really embraced in this development session was the imperfect nature of each brush. Whilst some made a precise, confident and singular mark, others had estranged bristles which resulted in a “ghost” line or subtle echo, giving the word a unique visual flair. Whilst I didn’t actually use these examples in the final animation, they are exciting tests which allowed me to explore this idea further, and resulted in my own hand-lettered typeface.
Additionally to the final animated sequence, I was able to produce my own type-face, which would allow me to make a personal banner for this blog. I’m an art student after all, so my blog should reflect that. The blocky, square and robotic visual language of the font was a result of the brush - which fortunately had a clear divide between a small collection of bristles. This gap allowed for the striking white space in each letter, and the large brush resulted in a square, blocky shape to each character. Looking at the typeface now, it’s clear to me that I was inspired, atleast partially, by the typography from the show Mr Robot, a subject that I analysed in the previous project. It’s a mix of the 80s retro video-game aesthetic and a bold, powerful shape style which makes my font quite visually exciting, I think.
Producing my own typeface was something I identified in a previous blog post, and allowed me to develop my confidence and skills in typography and hand-lettering. Whilst not instantly relevant to my interest in animation, I eventually would use typeface in the final video, in place of my brush-aesthetic examples. There’s a power, a dynamic and exciting bold aesthetic to the font which I felt worked really well with my message.
Apart from my newfound love of hand-lettering, I wanted to produce the type strictly by hand in response to Anthony Burrill’s ‘analogue brain’ and the clearly hand-drawn aesthetic of Bushworld Adventure’s closing credits. The energetic and rapid ‘breathing’ type gives the credits a real sense of energy, life and excitement. It’s a subtle touch, but one that instantly communicates to the audience a love of movement and animation.
It’d be much easier to simply have static type as credits, as most films do - but the film was created by the programming block Adult Swim, which focuses on presenting original animated and live action programming with experimental, unorthodox, adult and controversial direction. It’s “your late-night home for animation”, and thus has become an icon in animated programming. This is something that I will look at further, but what I’m saying is it’s a channel which celebrates animation - so they will animate credits, to communicate their love of the craft. Not only this, but it’s inherently creative and energetic - the exact effects I wanted my typographical poster to have.
Having created sets of hand-lettered type and characters, I proceeded to scan them into Photoshop, and carry out some simple clean up jobs, playing around with levels of black and white to produce a final result ready for animation. The actual animation process was quite simple, using the Frame Animation tool in Adobe Photoshop to flicker between the hand-lettered type. Initially, I was going to simply use all the brush-lettered examples and flick through these, however, the chattering between frames was too distracting and jarring to the overall piece.
Chattering is movement which occurs in hand-drawn, frame by frame animation - a secondary movement caused by the image or type not aligning perfectly with the previous and next frame. It can be a nice touch to animation, something which communicates the craft to the viewer - in comparison to the sleek, smooth animation of 3D digital animated movies such as Pixar, where the process is almost untouchable. However, whilst chattering can be a good thing - it can also be jarring to the viewer. If a character constantly changes shape, or a word suddenly bolts to the left in one frame, the secondary movement actually distracts from the intention of the animation. This is something that I struggled with concerning “shit”, which simply did not transition between frames in a visually pleasing manner. It was my use of both small and capital letters, and extreme variety in composition, which resulted in the animation looking very childish and jolting to the eye. At this point, the first word, ‘make’ was complete, and I was still trying to use the various examples I had created with a brush.
This just wouldn’t work with the type that I had created, so I decided to use my blocky typeface as a solution to this problem. With my many attempts at creating this robotic and retro typeface, I had enough characters and variations to make several versions of the word - and with this, I was able to make an exciting, chattering type animation!
With “cool”, I wanted to experiment with the digital liquify tool, which allowed me to warp each image to my liking. This is something that I briefly looked into with my digitial type posters, and wanted to complete this line of enquiry with an animation. The word lends itself to ideas of flow, lucid and loose - so I wanted to make the word warp and almost melt, into a simple animation which I could loop a few times for the final video. This choice was inspired by my loose brushwork when initially trying my hand at lettering in the ‘Post Up’ workshop, it’s something that I felt fit nicely with the themes of the piece, and made for an exciting animation.
Having completed the animations in separate Photoshop files, I exported each into an mp4 file and composed them into a final video in Premiere Pro. Here, I added a suitably exciting and loud soundtrack which I could then edit to, making sure each beat of the track was met with the next edit. As a process, I actually really enjoy editing. It’s something that I want to get better at, but also something which I find interesting and incredibly rewarding when you sit back and watch an animation timed perfectly to exciting music. As an animator just starting out, editing will be something that I will likely be doing myself, or with a small group of like-minded creatives - so it’s a good idea to start practicing now. With this, the Scrappers process video and the ‘Isle of Dogs’ exhibition film that I’m planning on making , I’m developing my understanding of the process considering timing, sound, visuals, and pacing.
Working on the monochromatic visual language of my hand-rendered poster, I wanted to keep to the black and white minimal visual style to the animation. Initially, my idea was to have each word flashing black and white at the same time, but I thought this would have been quite reckless considering any photoepileptic audiences who might be watching. The animation will be published on image sharing social media site Instagram, which has an auto-play feature - meaning there would be no warning to those suffering from the condition. It’s not a rare thing, so I ultimately scrapped the idea and instead opted for a shifting scheme for each word - white on black, black on white and then finally white on black again. It’s a simple approach, but one which successfully keeps those ideas of creative energy and excitement, as a result of moving type, striking backgrounds and loud, inspiring music.
As a practical development, I think it works well. It’s exciting, loud and attention-grabbing. The rapid chattering type gives the piece that idea of movement and energy, embracing a loose and fluid animation style. It’s short, but I feel it communicates my enthusiasm for animation and graphic arts, even with the subtle pun of “join the movement”. It’s meant to inspire artists to start creating, and I think the striking visual style and powerful music work to help achieve this.
My original hand-lettered poster
It draws clear visual inspiration from my original poster, but also the ideas of designer Anthony Burrill and the chattering type aesthetic of many animated productions, but specifically the recent Bushworld Adventures from Adult Swim. I think the three animated words work the best, in terms of chattering, fluid motion - possessing an energy and life which is practically exactly what I had imagined. The final shot, though, promoting the hashtag and ‘join the movement’ looks somewhat flat and jarring. It works for a quick animation, yes, but both type examples suffer from a stilted movement. This was due to me only creating two different compositions, and simply flashing between the two doesn’t create the same fluidity as the earlier examples. If I had created several copies, the movement would be much more natural, and not the artificial blink it is now. Ultimately, though, this is a minor problem - on the whole, I think I was able to make an exciting animation from playing with typography. Also, the piece ends with an action - #makecoolshit is displayed blinking on screen, encouraging artists to do the same. It’s a way of engaging my audience and bringing them into the conversation. This idea of a driving action, after having watched a video, is an important concept in today’s video-obsessed culture. Asking viewers to comment, like, share or subscribe is a way for the audience to respond and impact the work artists create. It’s a way for creators to keep in contact with their audience, but also lets the audience be a part of the creative process.
As far as developments go, this is the end of the road for ‘Post Up’. I’ve looked at Anthony Burrill in detail, produced a variation of typographical posters and produced a motivational animated sequence based on these posters, incorporating visuals and sound editing. Animating typography is something that I’d never tried before, but it’s definitely something that I will be incorporating into whatever I decide to make for the FMP. Whether its a short film or reel of animations, I’ll always need to add credits - and I will make sure to animate them by hand. With this, there’s a certain love of animation and creating as a whole, that is communicated to your audience - a subtle touch which adds another layer to the work. My focus now will shift to generating ideas for my own independently-led project in Graphic Arts, in the form of mind maps and notes. I’ve discussed some initial ideas in an audio log, and now I’m going to build upon these into four separate potential ideas for projects.
Next, I will be attending the Isle of Dogs exhibition in London, a primary response to my initial research into director Wes Anderson and stop motion animation as a craft.

Found Footage Movies
I observe from now on and thus far I’ve done this after I began this website I told myself that I'd evaluate every horror film. Sometimes this means writing overview of a movie I suppose virtually every horror fan has observed. Therefore consider to terror movies of yesteryear, a look-back of these varieties of “reviews” as more of a nostalgia trip! So here’s my assessment/look back of The Blair Witch Project.
He movie wears it’s influences on sleeve: Edgar Allen Poe “The Of Lost Souls” all hang seriously within the proceedings. But, with post that is 90’s and technology visual -”Scream” paradox shredded inside the 40 minutes to items, whilst the bumps within the nighttime become less annoyance and more genuinely disturbing, “The Blair Witch Project” controls to bring fresh water from your variety nicely.
Yes, footage movie was discovered by its a. And yes, it wasn't the primary sometimes. But what draws it far from the package was the ability with which it was designed. Personalities, who were really out in the centre of nowhere, exhausted, keen and tormented each evening by their crew, supply such a sensation of dread through utter believability, that by the moment the rate accelerates and we arrive at the orgasm, it doesn’t really matter if everything appears somewhat ridiculous. They offer us onto it as does Myrick's thoroughness and strategy.
Therefore I was part of the huge number of believers… I was duped the same as a great number of others nonetheless where i differed from their store, when it was uncovered that it was phony i didn’t leap the “This film sucks” bandwagon. It looked that once it was produced public that it was only a coverage factor and sold as a tale that was genuine to gain more fascination individuals in gangs were switching about it. The exact same people who were impressed inside the theaters… I discovered this to be annoying when I nonetheless liked what the filmmakers tried to do. Temperature not or true they succeeded in the things they attempt to do as well as for me that made it impressive. If they were wanting to attract you in, they did, if they were wanting to shape your mind and supply you subliminal communications, it worked, whenever they were hoping that individuals would entirely imagine it and take from this the idea that they’d only seen some messed up shit, mission done.
Thus weather you loved it or not before it was phony you can’t refuse the influence it had on-US as people and movie goers, or enjoyed it. Luckily the original website remains up and it still has all the same marketing data that cause us all on this trip. They left no rock unturned.
We reach Coffin Rock, where Heather narrates, informing. Five guys were tortured. They were bound to each other, put one behind another. Each man’s hand was within the next one’s trousers. The guys advised the research celebration to depart their particular organization. Hours later, the men were identified decapitated and incredibly exhausted. The research party left to get the specialists, however when they delivered, the systems were gone. All that was located was a mini-disc as well as a Streisand CD single of “It’s Seeing Men.” Ah, who am I kidding? That’s the reason given in David Odekerk’s spoof The Blair Thumb. You will find it. Check it out, it’s hilarious. Infact, check David Odekerk’s Thumbs series' rest out.
This is exactly what truly happened at Coffin Rock. Each fingers was bound to another man’s legs. They pretty much shaped a kind of composition. Their intestines have been crudely torn-out. Indecipherable designs were carved into their faces. The search party returned to community to get the authorities once a research celebration found the figures. But when they delivered, the systems were removed. As vultures were skulking about around where the figures were nevertheless, not all evidence of the bodies was eliminated, along with the stench of death was inside the oxygen.
Nothing occurs throughout the day. That evening, the group create camp and fall asleep.
Blair Witch is disappointing on multiple quantities, which have related to the business. To begin with, we never needed a sequel to The Blair Witch Project. It was a one-and- indisputable fact that is completed that reached the right time and place and the weird magic was all in the setup that is unassuming. No , disappointing about that video is obtained one of many more encouraging filmmakers around and delivered down him to Hollywood’s horrible degree of cheese and predictability. Positive, you will find glimpses of his master here — specifically while in the ending that is claustrophobic — but they’re scarcely as evident from beginning to finish, as the quantity of troublesome jump scares that remain and nag. Ideally, this full production is one hop shock in the quite terrible summer of picture, one which left them there to rot between the mediocrity and brought out its viewers into the woods.
I believe people that dislike found footage videos really dislike this movie as it’s the one that spawned a today completely overused sub genre of dread. Blair Witch is often copied but seldom match in reality that was it’s. I find it hard to feel some of you wouldn’t have seen this but if there are a few of you out there go watch it and get yourself a backup!
It established what both Francis Ford Coppolla and Spike Lee had mentioned ten years earlier, when discussing the art form could alter permanently. Lest we overlook, this is the entire year that also noticed the return of Kubrick, Malick and Lucas for the film-making front. Who'd have imagined a group of nobodies would all eclipses them?
This type of get video… I appreciate it to this day and still truly liked this video a whole lot. I frequently notice components i missed seeing it before then i find great videos of film practices and see even more stuff i skipped. For reaching what it set out to do… suck-you in this kind of incredible concept and it genuinely deserves respect!
No filming happens that night, but we observe that Josh has gone missing the next day. I don’t possibly know why Heather’s still shooting. She's no reason to. As we enter the ultimate twenty minutes of the movie Louise and Scott proceed to know the hopelessness of the circumstance.
The trio hears agonized shouts while in the length, doubtless originating from Josh, that evening. Louise and Henry unsuccessfully try to find him.
Heather discovers a bundle of branches outside of the tent bound together with a strip of Josh’s clothing, the next morning. She discovers a soft scrap of Josh’s clothing containing a hand, hair and one that’s the language and opens it. Atleast, that’s exactly what the Web said. I can hardly tell. As well as for some explanation, she doesn’t present this to Paul.
Very little happens that time. We see Heather’s' famous world tearful admission and cry for help that night. She says that something evil is tracking them, takes full liability due to their situation, and apologizes to the categories of Robert and Josh as well as her household. Hunting? No; tracking signifies that the Blair Witch hasn’t found them. The expression you’re looking for is “trolled”. Later, Patricia and Paul notice cries in the woods from Josh, and so they venture out to locate him, making sure to create along both cameras. Why might they actually carry one camera, let alone equally? Yes, they have lights in it, but do neither of them have torches? They surprisingly come across a rundown home. Wait, this is actually the climax? There's been so small buildup! Also the seriousness of the specific situation hasn’t helped! The trio switches into your house, thinking where Josh’s cries are coming from that this really is.
STRESSY (The Blair Flash): It’s dark, it’s abandoned, it’s crazy! Let’s get inside!

Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you That is how I know you go on
Far across the distance And spaces between us You have come to show you go on
Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on Once more you open the door And you’re here in my heart And my heart will go on and on
Love can touch us one time And last for a lifetime And never let go till we’re one
Love was when I loved you One true time I hold to In my life we’ll always go on
Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on Once more you open the door And you’re here in my heart And my heart will go on and on
