So it can be a huge castle full of jewerly and elegant clothes/ornaments or just a cozy room with some chips and video games.

I think when he's relaxed, the hair is just- a little bit warm, then with his feelings and emotion it can go up to a bigillion degrees, so it's not harmful as long as he can control it.

i've still been keeping tabs on what's happening at automattic. a couple of things i've observed:

toni schneider (who is a man btw), the interim ceo, has been quite open with staff in ways that mean they generally seem relieved to have him leading the company for now. i've heard people speak optimistically about him from all parts of the spectrum (by which i mean: staff who are trans tumblr users right through to staff who are "anti-woke" or whatever and were absolutely intolerable to work with as a trans person), which seems like... a good sign? maybe.

this relative transparency includes things like weekly updates from an executive level, as well as openly saying that he did have to directly speak to matt and encourage him to, you know, stop posting.

matt is back to his usual milquetoast blogging, and replied to someone on mastodon about the AI issue saying he'd comment on it when he's back in may, so whatever toni said to him seems to have worked for him keeping out of it for now.

people have no idea what it's gonna look like when matt's back.

the best case scenario is that schneider manages to create a significant enough boost in morale and productivity that "it'd be nice if we just kept him" becomes a sentiment that isn't held just by the rank and file. i don't know how likely that is, but there's a sense of cautious hope and of making the most of this reprieve from matt's increasingly erratic decisions no matter what.

the tumblr staff statement was approved by schneider and hr, so i am also hopeful they won't face repercussions. what they said might seem pretty mild from the outside, or carefully worded, but it's pretty clear to me and to most people who've worked at companies like this that it's a pretty bold one.

i'll quote a friend:

keep reminding the more histrionic elements out there that: 1. there really are trans people, INCLUDING TRANS WOMEN, in the fight here. 2. we don't have nearly the power they seem to think we do. 3. we're fighting anyway. was the statement we wrote enough? fuck no. does it fix everything? fuck no. but we literally called out the CEO, and got the greenlight for it from the interim CEO. i don't know where this will end, but that's not nothing.

I am rewatching Misfits and Magic in preparation for the new season, and I am determined to figure out the exact date when The wizarding world of Misfits and Magic (WWMM for short) cut off technologically. I mean like Brennan keep saying, everything is technology so at some point the world was contemporary. So I will be keeping track of specific technology that stands out. I will update this post as I watch.

I will not count technologies an individual may have as some wizards are shown to have family etc in the NAMP world. This is a list of the wildly accepted technology.

So far no travel technology canonically described (in no real order)

Notable known technology

- Velocipede bicycles

Invented June 12, 1818.

So far this is the most recent date we can get. This specific type of hike also comes up in episode 2 so it isn’t a one-off from a more open-minded character. Dr. Boodle even implies that the school offers students complementary velocipedes in episode 2, so this technology is not considered out of place in the WWMM

- Tobacco pipe

While pipes in general can be traced back to Ancient Egypt, English Pipes do not become popularized until the late 1500s with the colonization/subsequent genocide of Indigenous Americans. This is when Tobacco in particular gets pairs with Pipes as it is native to the Americas.

- Parchment

Invented in Pergamum, 1500 BC.

However, it is not popular in England until seemingly 1500 CE, so this date keeps coming up.

- Indoor plumbing for water but not toilets

(so far unclear if that includes sinks or a water pump or what)

I knew this was going to give me trouble. Also TW a lot of literal shit talk.

Plumbing in general can be dated back to the Neolithic period but Aabria does say they have water pipes. If we are assuming these pipes are iron, and the typical shape then this would date to 1455

However, we can get more specific as the use of toilets/plumbing integrated gives us a cut off date. While again there are examples of various cultures using water to clean their versions of toilets, the flushing toilet is not invented until 1775.

This creates a problem. As shown Velocipedes were not invented at 1818. However, this could mean than instead of a single cut-off date, the transition to seclusion was slightly more gradual. As the lack of toilets seems to me more systematically in-forced (while velocipedes are easier to integrate) I am confident to say that by 1775 the wizarding world began to close itself off but had not fully done so. It also makes sense for typical public toilets/latrines not to be integrated into wizarding society as those are unhygienic and so a magical solution would be warranted, and that would still fit the contemporary needs. Furthermore the idea of pooping somewhere and then cleaning it matches with the social etiquette of latrines (versus just magicing away the waste pre-actual pooping.) this shows that socially pre-1755 the wizarding board was contemporary with medieval Europe.

- Pushbroom

Evan’s broom is specifically called a pushbroom. The pushbroom’s patent was filed in 1950! However, I could attribute this to the broom shop owner being particularly connected to the outside world? Or maybe it is just an older broom that looks similar to a pushbroom so Evan calls it that.

- Mop

Traditional mops (not just rags) seems to appear by the late 15th century for ships, and the idea is popular in association with more general cleaning by the 1840s.

- toffee

Toffee first becomes a word for candy around 1843. However, this was a general word for taffy-like candy. English toffee seems to be often dated to from around 1890s but that date is unreliable. https://www.etymonline.com/word/toffee

- Tea

Tea does not arrive in Europe until the 1600s from China. At the start, tea was still consumed like Chinese tea (no milk or sugar, etc). England then takes over the industry in 1858 with the government taking over the East India Company / relying on colonized India for tea production instead of China. However, this didn’t really affect popular culture / tea consumption habits until the 1900s and then really boomed in WWII.

I do admit that a handful of savvy more-modern Wizards could have taken tea’s popularity and broke into the untapped Wizard Market. However, even then you’d expect to see some sort of cultural difference (like how McDonald’s in different countries all have different menus, etc).

Notable technology not known about

- Nukes

We know definitively that nukes are not generally known about, so the WWMM is definitely completely closed off by 1945 bc even if there was slight connection people would know. Even if the WWMM closed after because of nukes people would know.

- Radio

Repeatedly radio is confirmed to be foreign. Radios were invented in 1899, and audio transmissions were then added in 1906.

Conclusion so far:

The WWMM was relatively contemporary with NAMP Britain through the 1500s. However, by 1755 WWMM began to close itself off. At least, architecture stopped being updated with modern plumbing which reflects a larger systematic shift. However, there was still a steady exchange of ideas through the 1840s, as tea, velocipedes, toffee, and modern mops all are treated as everyday items. However, by 1906 major technological trends went unnoticed, and certainly by 1945 the WWMM was completely cut off from world-wide news.

I feel like it is likely that by 1906 the WWMM stagnated completely and looked relatively the same to season 1’s world.

Currently, my theory is the political strife leading up to WWI, likely before the actual war, lead to the intellectual closure of the WWMM. However I will repost/update this with any new info. Also feel free to add your own insights.

I honestly keep forgetting about N!Juste bc he's such a travesty, so wnv I get reminded of him I'm just as angry as day one, lol. I just mentally delete N!Juste every time I see him, like dragging a corrupted file to the recycle bin. Tbf he's easy to forget, bc he's also boring and the least of Nocturne's problems so far, but obv I'm going to dislike it a lot as fan of HoD.

What gets me most I think, is how most ideas I've seen of a post game Juste, have him in a mentor or at least respected ancestor role to Richter(if not just outright his dad, lol). Even with bad end Juste - in fact *especially* with bad end Juste - it's hard to imagine Juste being so checked out on his descendants. If anything, Juste having a controlling/overprotective streak, seems to be a possible thing with him, which you would think sudden catastrophic loss would actually make worse.

(imo a bad end Juste would react to Richter like Marlin in Finding Nemo, but forced to train him excessively instead of being able to shelter him. Especially when Richter *is so similar to Maxim, who he lost.* I think he would have every motive to try and ensure Richter has the best odds possible against anything.)

And this idea doesn't come from nowhere - A lot of elements of Juste (and Maxim) as characters, right down to gameplay, is backshadowing SoTN and Richter in particular. It's very much an implication that Richter inherits traits from the both of them, whether by blood, fate, or literally being trained by them, or relatives that already had been. Juste's connection to Richter in this way, was the only reason to even bring him into a Richter storyline in the first place.

And the Juste we know from HoD has an incredibly strong and distinctive personality. "Ooc" doesn't even really begin to describe how off N!Juste is. He's basically a reused stock archetype. He's the cookie cutter they used to make N!Trevor, thrown on the tray after they ran out of dough.

And tbh they didn't even need to do this, so it's baffling why they chose to. I can't claim to see into the genius peak minds behind nfcv, but my nearest guess is that not only do they not see No Legacy as a narrative problem for Richter, they see Legacy itself as an active threat. Bc Juste was genuinely their last Get Out of Jail Free card to give Richter a legacy and they wasted it, specifically to reinforce Belmont's as Useless. They actually could have had him just be a mentor to Richter that influenced him from a relatively safe distance in the script, while changing not a whole lot, imo.

The only other explanation is that they were just too scared have anyone as cool as game Juste or his friends anywhere near their watery product, lol. He is just full of too much prettyboy protagonist style while also being loaded to the balls full of magic power and having real Belmont swag. They could not have even a backstory version of this man that wouldn't threaten to upstage their constantly berated Richter, or their precious fanservice Alucard they just redesigned. He is too powerful.

Regardless, they felt the need to literally take away everything that makes Juste recognizable - his outfit, his powers, his friends, even his face!(that beard really is horrendous, it actually feels like it is there to hide his face istg). He can't even have his character flaws, they had to be replaced with ones that make him more suitably disaffected. All for the completely 0 pay off of another Useless Belmont.

Just as many of us are thrilled to see rep in s3, many, many women were thrilled at the idea of representation for themselves in s2. one of my professors keeps blaming every little thing on her mental disorders. Like, i understand having mental disorders and having no other way to explain your behavior, but you dont have to say "sorry its the [mental disorder]!" every. single. time.

She refuses to learn adobe products and is forcing us to use google slides of all programs. we've literally been trained on adobe products the past 3 years, and no one in their right mind would use google slides for a professional project like this! At the very least use powerpoint, but google slides??? really??? it works in a pinch but,,, just why??? like how do you get this far in the industry not being at least somewhat familiar with the leading programs used??

She got so mad at us for even suggesting she try learning it. She also got kinda mad when I told her to turn off the music she was playing while she was talking bc I couldn't process what she was saying. If it was classical music that would be fine, but it was lyrical music, and with my audio processing??? it just goes straight through. one way train no stops man.

When I was talking to her about my project she kept trying to hijack it, even when I specifically tried to say "No that's not what my idea is" and she just talked over me. It's like she just likes the sound of her own voice. It was like a dog and their owner tugging at the leash wanting to go opposite ways. Two forces that weren't budging. I ended up talking to my mom who helped me figure out how to phrase my idea in words my professor would understand, and forcibly took the leash into my own paws so to speak. I'm just doing my thing now, knowing I have a goal and that all I have to do is translate into words she gets for a decent grade.

Its just overall very frustrating trying to communicate with her, because we are two very VERY different people.

For the issues n stuff:

I have an issue with a lot of tiktok makeup trends due to the fact that half of them are the same thing with maybe one or two changes to them, but suddenly everyone has to 'jump on' to the trend even tho they did the same thing three videos ago.

I'm also tired of a lot of the clean girl shit simply because a lot of the people who do it make it seem like that is the only way makeup should be done. Like the whole idea that makeup should be natural or made to look just like skin or whatever is bull shit to me simply because the people who say that tend to like push the idea instead of just kinda bring it up. Im not saying everyone does, but there are a lot who do.

Another issue I have is like a lot of fancy ass brands and shit. Like a lot of these brands will release new things like eyeshadow palettes and it's only like 6-24 or so of the same nude/neutral colors that can be found in so many other palettes. I just don't really see the point in it. Also like half the time I see people paying like more than half a lower class pay check for a cosmetic product that preforms just about as well as a makeup kit from Claire's. Like what's the fucking point.

I don't like the fact that we're in the year 2024 and people sit dont widen the shade ranges for darker skin tones and shit. Im glad we're learning about all the different undertones for people and all that, but like for the love of god, can y'all quit making a total of 4-6 shades for dark skin colors and also stop making them all warm toned. I will say though, there are brands starting to get better, but I'm so tired of seeing a foundation go viral only for a POC to not find their own shade in that product.

This also goes for things outside of foundation or concealer. Face powders, bronzers, contour, blushes, lipsticks even. Like this issue goes past the more basic things. This is why I literally hate hearing about Charlotte Tilbury's pillow talk lipstick. "But what about pillow talk medium?" It can burn in hell. Also like seeing POC only have about one or two blush choices half the time is more than disappointing. The darkest bronzer of a new product that could literally be used as face powders for them, actually depressing.

I'm watching the 1988 production with English fansubs by Lesmislooney and first of all, what an enterprise! I love fandom!!

Overall I'm very impressed with how clever and elegant the translation ends up being. Using "the projects" for "la banlieue" is the obvious right choice, and some ideas had me laughing out loud (having Zéro Janvier's platform be "Make the city great again" is a great choice!) I am delighted that my pet line about Johnny & Sadia hiding "avec leur petite amie Cristal" is indeed translated as "coming out with their girlfriend Cristal" :D I want to really stress that it's a REAL tough ask to translate this show and yet so necessary because it's so fast and packed with references, and I'm super glad it exists because it's clearly the entry point for many international fans!

That said... I do have a few quibbles :p (translation teacher mode, activate!) Obviously no translation will ever be perfectly faithful to the original, especially if you're translating songs and trying to preserve some of the stylistic choices. But I did notice a few small vocabulary errors: "motard" means biker, not motorist; "les banlieues dortoirs" are not "suburban bedrooms" but commuter towns/dormitory towns. When Johnny is talking to Sadia for the first time and she's trying to re-direct the Etoiles Noires' violence towards Zero Janvier, he says "Moi je fais pas pas ça pour les idées" which means "I'm not doing it for ideological reasons" (ie, they're into gratuitous violence, not political action) -- it's flattened into "I don't think like that" which is unfortunate. "Les Adieux d'un Sex Symbole" have Stella saying she should "re-marry" for some reason (she says "I should marry") and "venez vous arracher ma mort" ("Come and fight/compete over my death," which echoes the subsequent line "come share/divide up my corpse") is confused for "Come snatch away my death" (which would be "venez m'arracher ma mort.")

Translating proper nouns which also contain cultural references is obviously even harder, but I'm a little sad that "PPPP" ends up being "Party Promising Political Progress" because you lose the humor of the original ("Parti Pris Pour le Progrès" is a play on the words "parti" politique vs "parti pris," literally meaning "Prejudice in favor of Progress" -- I would propose something like "Pro-Progress Prejudice (Party)" if you wanted to keep the acronym, not that you have to IMO.)

In other places I feel like they overly disambiguated some lines or softened some of the language in a way that changes the narrative in consistent directions (namely, to make Johnny and the Etoiles Noires seem less violent & more like victims.) For example "Quand on arrive en ville" turns "who is raping the women" into "who's been attacking women" -- sure, that line is in bad taste now, but it is the line -- and says "who's been setting buildings on fire? They always blame the Dark Stars" instead of "who's setting fire to buildings, it's always the Black Stars." And of course you can possibly interpret the song in that way and have the Etoiles Noires be the victims of media propaganda instead of actual bad people, but it's not explicit in the text, and therefore I feel like it should be left up to the audience's interpretation. In "Banlieue Nord," Johnny's "J'ai tout cassé avant de partir" ("I destroyed everything before I left") becomes "I burned all my bridges before I left," which again makes it plausible that he's just a misunderstood, non-violent guy, when the text explicitely says otherwise.

I'm also mourning the loss of "On a pas l'air virils" -- We don't look manly -- in "Quand on arrive en ville," which I love so much bc it lends the Etoiles Noires & Johnny a little queer undertone; it's been translated as "We don't look strong" which I would argue are two pretty different things.

Conversely, translating "Mesdames, mesdemoiselles, messieurs" (a classic set phrase) as "Ladies, Gentlemen and others" adds meaning that was wholly absent from the original. Similarly, Ziggy's song which in the subs describes him as "the greatest rock drummer in the world" instead of "the first rock drummer in the world" in French is also either a misunderstanding or an attempt to correct one of the issues with the French, because for this production the creators changed the song so Ziggy wanted to be a drummer instead of a dancer like in the original version because Renaud Hantson was a great drummer and they wanted to utilize that, but it makes no sense in the original because ROCK DRUMMERS ARE A VERY COMMON THING, as opposed to "rock dancers" lol. And sure, it would be more logical if the song said "the best rock drummer" but it doesn't! And I just don't think translated subtitles should be about silently correcting perceived flaws in the source text.

Anyway! My main takeaway is, it's the first time I'm in a fandom which relies so much on translation to reach an international audience (since usually we expect non-English speakers to figure out a way to understand English source texts lol), with no "official" one to boot, and it's super weird to think that everyone comes to the text with a slightly (or radically *cough*Tycoon*cough*) different understanding of the canon, perhaps without even realizing it! It's like we're all working with a slightly AU version of the material (even more than usual when it's only about people's interpretation of the same text), and it would be fascinating to see that translated into an actual active transformative fandom, sigh.

and, well: he hasn't kept up to date. he still knows more about a lot of things than i do, but i've got much more strongly held opinions and a hell of a lot more curiosity, especially as he's gone from reading local right-wing mags to breitbart and full on conspiracy far-right shit. i work much more closely with foss on a daily basis than he does. i trust the government less than he does, which is a feat, and am far more comfortable navigating information security than he is. i can't code like he can, but i'm the one with the nanopi cron job pet project. my experience with tech is piecemeal as heck and i don't have the right vocab to sound like i know what i'm doing. but i'm not an asshole so my networks are wider. my experience is wider, bc i did most of papa's tech for some time. bc i like to go to infosec cons and talk to people. bc i work with websites and he's a telco guy.

idk. it's weird! he Works In Tech in a way that i don't. all my life i've seen him as an opinionated, educated guy, and in a lot of ways he's corncobbing himself before my eyes. not that he hadn't already done that given the conspiracy shit but, you know, this is the one arena where i still ask him for advice, and here we are. it's me. i've successfully become my own dad, and he needs me more than i need him.

i know $6 a month isn't a lot in the united states, but they have a pretty international audicence and with currency exchange, $6 is a lot. like in hong kong that's $50 a month, mexico its 102 pesos a month, in the phillipines that's 345 pesos a month, in argentina that's 5,221 argentine pesos--you get the idea. hell, i live in the us and i can't even afford to spend an extra $6 a month 😭

i agree on paying creators fairly, and i know watcher has 25 employees who deserve to paid. but the channel already pulls in over $100k a month from patreon alone; they also make bank from all their sponsors and merch sales. i mean, one of their main series is steven lim eating expensive food like gold flaked beef. i mean, he has a new tesla!

idk it just feels like that ceo thing where they aren't happy with consistent success, it needs to be increasing success. but ofc idk them, i'm just an outside observer so idk the full story, etc.

first up -- i actually think $6 a month IS a lot for some people in the US & have talked in private w friends about how i wish they'd started at like, $1-$3/mo or smth because even that would make it more affordable for a lot of their fans :-) just to clear that up! $6 is a lot when most streaming services that offer way more than 2x as much content cost like 2x as much on average (i think? the only streaming service i have is for baseball, i pirate everything else so idk). $6 a month is also a lot, Period, for many people, regardless of context. it's the principle of paying for it at all that was my main point in that post

to everything else -- great points and i appreciate the info and your perspective. re: money i know $100k/mo sounds like a lot + they have the other revenue sources you mentioned but i think it's important to keep in mind that they're not just paying for their own/their employees' lives but also funding the shit they make -- travel, gear, production costs, everything they need to buy for the videos etc. like it's not JUST 28 paychecks that the money is going towards but also the necessary costs of the job itself. not to mention that at least shane steven and ryan live in a super HCOL area ($100k/yr for a single person is literally considered "low income" in san francisco lmao & i dont even wanna know what it is in los angeles). they could still be making bank, idk! i have literally no idea what their finances look like, i'm spitballing the same as everyone else. but i think shit costs more than a lot of people realize

i have zero argument with the frustrations with how expensive this will be for their non-usamerican audiences, i'm really sorry that they didn't roll out different prices for different locations or like ... seem to take that into consideration at all. like i said in the original post, i have no beef with anyone who is personally upset about getting priced out of content they love. honestly my only point here is that i do not doubt at all that everything they release on watcher will be uploaded to piracy sites by people w accounts & that everyone anywhere who is capable of piracy (ik some countries are harsh about it but # of countries where it faces strict repercussions < # of countries where watcher's pricing is prohibitively expensive afaik) will be able to access it, and i bring that up more in hopes that it's encouraging for people worried about getting to still watch their content than bc i'm trying to argue anything

Busting the Heat Pump Myth Busters

Everyone and their dog wants us to switch to heat pumps. So I did a little google research on it. Bc Hydro has a site listing the benefits of heat pumps Heat pumps (bchydro.com). Generally everything they say is legit. City of Vancouver has a site giving recommendations on how to upgrade to heat pumps Heat pumps | City of Vancouver. Generally the city stuff smells like a giant load of bull shit.

I have three real world scenarios for heating: a small apartment building that is 75 years old, a 400 sqft park model trailer that is 30 years old, and a small house that is 85 years old.

here is what I have found out so far about heat pumps.

from my dad (who did hvac installs and maintenance for 55 years): heat pumps are a great idea, but he never used them in his homes.

new models of heat pumps will function down to -30C (not optimally but they will work); the specs and real world comments indicate they work just fine down to -20C without any issues.

pricing is reasonable: a 12,000 BTU ducted mini-split is $1,200 CDN; this is suitable for -30C and 400 sqft; can replace an existing propane furnace at essentially the same cost.

below -30C the heat pumps may not function as the units will probably freeze up. Below -30C you absolutely need a backup system

heat pumps require electricity. this can be in short supply when it gets cold out. Texas grid froze up a few years back and collapsed. This week the Alberta grid almost collapsed during the -55C weather (as my mom said, she is not going outside in that). Heat pumps only work if the grid is functioning; grids that rely on "green" sources such as wind and solar dont function very well in Alberta during the winter; so you might want "ahem" a standby diesel generator to run those heat pumps when it gets cold out.

The city of Vancouver recommends that apartment buildings replace hot water heating with a mini-split per unit. This article highlights the stupidity of that recommendation $1.2M heat pump bill shows gap in B.C. climate plan - Vancouver Is Awesome. It literally would cost more to install heat pumps in my condo than the condo is worth.

Doing further research (ignoring the idiots at CoV) turned up no suitable heat pumps for apartments with hot water heating (which is about 90% of all apartment buildings in Vancouver). There are in-ground heat exchangers for buildings; lots of press on those going into new buildings. The additional cost of these units is about 2% of the total building. So if you have a $500M building, then the heat exchanger will add about $10M... on a new building not a big deal. To retrofit a small apartment? my guess is it will cost more than installing mini-spits. I dont know what the cost is, because I haven't found anything published by someone who has done this in Vancouver.

apparently, heat pumps have a couple of "additional" benefits that are worth noting. the first benefit being, these also provide cooling (aka air conditioning). the second benefit is the built in air filtration of the mini-splits; many have air filters that help pull dust etc out of the air (the literal air conditioner). the third benefit is a steady temperature no matter what the weather is like; in other words, toss the programmable thermostat.

in summary

heat pumps for single family dwelling in moderate climates (where temperatures never go below -20C) seem to be widely available and are affordable when compared to natural gas furnaces. >> if this is your situation, a heat pump will probably work for you

if you are in a cold climate (temperatures drop below -20C or drop below -30C for extended periods) a backup heating system will be needed. >> I have heard of dual systems (heat pump with built in furnace) but havent seen an actual product. Those that have installed heat pumps with backup heating, indicate the heat pumps have worked out well.

if you are in a multi-family dwelling (apartment / condo) you are currently SOL. >> if someone knows of heat pumps that replace the boiler for hot water heating systems, please repost with that info.
