i have some firsthand experience of the localization changes since i was watching fan-translated videos of V3 when the game came out in japan. most of the changes are more vernacular-based because sometimes the japanese language quirks sound "awkward" when put into english. gonta, angie, and tenko all spoke in the first person and i guess NISA went "ok well if anyone's gonna speak in first person its the guy we're gonna turn into a caveman" bc yeah gonta got hit the hardest with the localization beam.

Setup NAT DNS rules on UniFi Security Gateway

For the past few years I have used Steven Black's hosts files in my machine to block adware, trackers, etc. Recently I was made aware of the Pi-Hole project and want to move to that solution.

While learning more I discovered that many IoT devices (e.g., WyzeCam v3, Withings Aura, ...) have hardcoded DNS settings (e.g., 8.8.8.8) and bypass whatever values the DHCP server recommended. Who knew! But I get it, from their perspective it's one less thing to worry about.

Thankfully, I can setup NAT rules in Unifi Security Gateway (USG) to intercept all DNS requests (i.e., TCP and UDP on port 53) and reroute them wherever I want (the gateway, in my case).

There is lots of documentation and forum posts on how to do it but since it took me a couple of hours to figure things out I decided to write it down here hoping to save time to others (or myself in the future!).

IMPORTANT: CloudKey must be on separate VLAN

When I applied the approach below I had my CloudKey and laptops on the main LAN network, my IoT devices on VLAN 200, and guest devices on VLAN 300. Devices on the LAN network could not resolve domains while any on the VLANs could.

In lots of forum threads people suggest to add a "masquerading" rule to make things work. That does solve the problem but also hides the origin of the DNS request in Pi-Hole. That was not good enough for me.

After various trials and errors I discovered that simply moving my devices on a separated VLAN (and adding/adjusting the NAT rules appropriately) solved the issue. Currently, my USG and CloudKey are on LAN (192.168.1.x), laptops/phones on VLAN 100, IoT devices on VLAN 200, etc.

What you will need

You will need a few things: 1. The password of your Unifi CloudKey (e.g., ubnt/...) 2. Enable SSH access to your USG (Controller -> System Settings -> Device SSH Authentication) and set user/password 3. The list of the VLAN IDs that you want to affect (e.g., default one, 200, 300, etc) 4. The name of your site - you can find it in the URL of the Controller Dashboard after "site", it is "default" for the main/first one

Inspect Controller's Traffic

First thing to learn is how to check on the traffic going on through your router. To do that, SSH into the controller (e.g., ssh useryouchoose@192.168.1.1) and then do tail -f /var/log/messages. You will see lots of messages, to isolate the DNS ones you can run

in the case above, the interface is eth1 the VLAN ID is 200, the request was made by 192.168.5.93 and it was directed to 8.8.8.8 (instead of the local 192.168.5.1).

Add the configuration in the CloudKey

Now SSH into the CloudKey (e.g., ssh ubnt@192.168.1.2) and go edit the config.gateway.json file. The right one to edit is located at /srv/unifi/data/sites/<sitename> where <sitename> will be default for the main site created.

You can use vim config.gateway.json to edit/add the file if it does not exist. Remember to execute chwon unifi:unifi config.gateway.json after editing and saving it.

Here is what to add to redirect all "foreign" DNS requests on eth1.200 (network eth1, vlan 200) to the internal DNS server (192.168.5.1)

Once you saved it (vim key :x), go in the Controller Dashboard, click on Devices -> USG -> Config -> Manage Device -> Provision to force the configuration to be propagated.

Check if it worked

To check if the configuration has been applied, SSH back into the USG and launch the following commands

configure show service nat

If your rule(s) show there, congratulations, they have been propagated correctly!

To see if they are applied, monitor for NAT- messages in the logs with tail -f /var/log/messages | grep 'NAT-'. To force it to happen, go on your computer and try to lookup some domain using a specified DNS, e.g.,

dig google.com @8.8.8.8

it should trigger the rule, e.g.,

If you see all this, you also know they are being applied!

Suppose that a bigger problem is made up of a million points. Each of these points is breaking through something hard (whether by 1 go or by 100 different pushes) to get to the final solution. And these points are ranked from the #1 hardest block to the millionth hardest block.

Because if there’s a million, it’s motivating that we move as many points as we can, isn’t it? At the end of the day, we didn’t just move 1, we moved 100 or 1000 or 10000 or 100,000. That’s motivating if you’re working on several things right (e.g. Venezuela and Yemen)?

The problem with the million points method is how to figure out which group of people should solve each group of points, because, well, there’s a million points.

Maybe you use the million points method to motivate yourself when you’re working on multiple problems (e.g. I’m going to focus on 20 this week- you might focus on 3 or 6- or 1,2,10- whatever motivates you),

And the 10,000 problems method is for figuring out what group of people should solve what types of problems (as it’s not overwhelming)

And it helps to always stretch yourself a bit- aim for the harder points, the harder #s, in a sustainable (i.e. motivating way)

Maybe the easier parts of the 1 million aren’t that hard, they’re pretty easy

Because it looks like there is a strong likelihood for the sanctions to continue on the PDVSA in Venezuela, how would you create 100 new ethical, safe income sources for the most vulnerable Venezuelan people? As in, what would some of them be, in a way that covered all or most of the most vulnerable people, income wise? 

They would need to be “incomes that cover all of a family/person’s needs, at the different levels going for- e.g. going for level 1, going for level 2, going for level 3”- e.g. a whole income/business/self-employed with low capital startup that employs a tonne of Venezuelans- especially those that bring in export money.

And how can Venezuelans (and foreigners- although treat this like a boost rather than any kind of dependency) intensively train Venezuela’s most at-risk and vulnerable to quickly get the skill level to do these?

For example, it seems like 4 potential income sources for Venezuelans are (1) contracts in ship parts, and anything to do with ships- how do you win contracts with these, (2) anything that makes the other Latin American countries better off with transportation- how do you win contracts with these, (3) manufacturing cleaning goods, (4) IT skills or app development- we don’t need computer science or IT degrees- we just need job tasks that need to be done, and we can export them and everyone can get enough money for food, gas and needs; and people who organize these (high value), (5) ethical ways to optimise your immune system and survive the coronavirus.

For people in Venezuela, it would be incredibly important to build (ethical) relationships with the outsiders who could help a lot and see them as potential boosts in the points up to solutions that cover everybody- but do not be dependent or sit around and wait for outsiders- in very, very, very safe ways, keep creating momentum yourselves too. 

Therefore, money comes into the country via these exported sources. Then the people working in these export businesses also spend some of their disposable income on local businesses. Then some of the local businesses support local businesses. That’s the idea. Money flowing in, with a % spent on internal businesses.

Because considering the recent report and what is happening with not allowing elections that genuinely reflect what the people need and want (as well as the drug and crime related risks to the international community), the sanctions might be there for another 4-8 years.

It is also worth all Venezuelan focusing 99% of their emotions and energy on the things that they Can Do, Control or Influence (currently existing and to be created/thought of), and avoiding thinking about things that they can’t Do, Control, or Influence (stoicism).

World help would also be greatly be appreciated as this is one of the world’s biggest humanitarian disasters.

There needs to be a better way than sanctions though. If a country is a dictatorship, there is very little the people can do to remove it. Dictatorships frequently just don’t give a shit and ignore the worst suffering of their people. because they can. people dont have the power to change much in these contexts, other than help themselves and their communities. 

Rather than doubling down on cruel policies and draconian economic sanctions that squeeze the Venezuelan people -- but benefit the regime by giving them false excuses for economic failures (e.g. hyperinflation and the most at risk, not being able to diversify ethical industries, and public services) - a new US-Venezuela policy should seek to help the people. America's failed policies on Cuba should be a lesson, and Venezuela should not fall victim to a repeat of that approach. For decades, provided the Cuban regime with an excuse for failed local economic policies, and now doing the same for Venezuela. Never-ending sanctions on Cuba have not resulted in regime change. That tactic will not work in Venezuela either. Sweeping economic sanctions primarily hurt the people of these countries.

Targeted sanctions on specific individuals in the Maduro government, military, and security services would be more effective. By the end of 2019, and almost a year after the United States imposed broad economic and oil sanctions on Venezuela, 96% of households in Venezuela were living in poverty, and of that number, 79% in extreme poverty. Yet, Maduro remained in power. US sanctions should target Venezuelan nationals supporting and funding Maduro; those who commit human rights violations; those who undermine democratic processes and institutions like the National Electoral Council (CNE); and those who run drug trafficking and money laundering operations.

However- the PDVSA is (1) a huge source of tax- for public services and (2) a huge employer and a (3) a huge source of exports for the imports that Venezuela needs. Also, focusing only on not importing anything is a short term strategy but not a medium or long term strategy. The highest income and product value benefits come from exporting and importing, as most sea-based countries learn over time.

The blunt tool of general sanctions further degrades the poor economic conditions in which the majority of Venezuelans now live. We are deepening their suffering rather than providing leverage for a solution.

V3 Boys Planning a Date That Gets Rained Out and Having a Sleepover Instead.

This was an idea I had a yesterday when it started raining here, and I thought it was a cute prompt! Enjoy!

He was so analytical so of course he plans everything out very carefully! He'd spent days, even weeks planning out all of your dates.  

It was sunny, mid-summer and not too hot, so he figured everything would be okay. You two planned on going to an amusement park and then to dinner afterwards. 

When you met him at his apartment, it was bright outside. Though, you needed a few minutes to finish touching up. Whilst getting ready, it started sprinkling. 

You could hear Saihara from the other room, peeking into the living room, he was staring out the window and sounded like a little kid. 

"Ooooh nooo..." 

Where did this rain come from? It was tapping the window and clouds covered the entire sky. 

You promised it was okay, you could go next weekend! But... that wasn't good enough. Everything was supposed to be perfect today! 

The rain only got worse, and eventually the entire sky turned gray. So, you called it quits and pulled him onto the couch. 

Saihara held his head down, but immediately perked back up when you kissed him on the forehead and embraced him in your arms. 

This quickly lead to a kissing war. 

Binge watching your favorite Netflix series together ended up replacing the amusement park date, and by the time you finished the season you were on, it was already evening. 

You lost track of time, which was easy for both of you since you got so invested into your series. 

He gave you a shirt, and was the one to offer spending the night. Without hesitation, you agreed, and falling asleep in his arms definitely made up for the rainy day.

He quickly pulled a U-Turn at the nearest exit, and were en route towards his place. 

"Nishishi~ I guess luck wasn't by our side today, huh, (S/O)?" He laughed and placed his hand on your thigh. 

When you arrived back at his place, he had a dinner table set and food in the oven, as well as a bouquet of roses placed on the counter and a card with some stupid pun written on the inside. 

"Did... you plan this? Did you know it was going to rain?" You asked shakily.

His smile said it all.

He insisted he had no idea it was going to rain and that he just had a 'backup plan' in case something went wrong, but you could tell it was a lie considering he couldn't stop laughing while speaking.

He always acted like a child when planning surprises for you. 

Neither of you planned for you to spend the night. You decided to have a movie marathon instead, while the storm carried on outside, and ended up accidentally falling asleep together.

You both got dressed up and ready to hit the town when you heard a crack of thunder. The lightning happened so fast, you didn't even see it. 

You were caught in the middle of the storm, so Rantaro slipped off his jacket and gave it to you for you to hold over your head. While doing so, he wrapped an arm around your shoulders and you two made a break for his place. 

Luckily, you weren't too far off, you just left so it wasn't a far run. He lived in the center of downtown so you were very close to all of the date spots you went on. 

Eventually, he picked you up and carried you home in his arms, and you used his jacket to shield the both of you. 

He was disappointed, but he wouldn't let you know it. So, he kept a calm face and his head on his shoulders, and reassured that he'd make it up to you. However, you aren't worried about him making anything up to you, it's the thought that counts. 

Having both been drenched, you took turns using his shower to clean up and he gave you some of his clothes to wear in the meantime. 

That's also when he got a bright idea! While you were showering, he cooked a quick dinner, your favorite to be exact, to surprise you. He put a bedsheet over his coffee table and lit a candle in the center, dimmed the lights, and placed the stack of movies he had at the corner of the table. 

When you walked out of the shower, you were taken back by the romantic gesture. 

"I cooked your favorite, and you can pick a movie for us to watch while we dine, my sweet." 

You fell asleep while watching the movie with a full stomach, and and he was woken up in the middle of the night by the storm. He was afraid of waking you, so he carefully picked you up again and placed you in his bed, crawling beside you, and quickly fell asleep again to the sound of raindrops hitting the window.

Just as you planned to step outside, you heard an all too familiar sound of rain on the sidewalk. 

The downside to dating a robot is that if it rains, you're kind of stuck. You can't risk him being outside and then the rain getting in his system, causing him to crash. 

He seemed saddened, and his mood changed. The two of you marched back inside and glanced at the tickets once again. 

"Um... Kiibo?" You said as you examined the paper. He perked up at the sound of his name. "These tickets say that the festival is next month."

Sure enough, he confused the dates. He was so happy, he almost rebooted himself on accident. You had to calm him down before he caused a system failure because that tends to happen when he gets very excited. 

You decided to spend the night playing board games... or trying to teach him how to play board games. 

Humans are so strange, they have fun moving plastic figures around a piece cardboard for hours. 

You gave up and put on a movie instead, and Kiibo eventually asked you to spend the night with him since the rain wasn't letting down any time soon.

And, now you had something to look forward to next month.

Trip to the space center, hell yeah! 

A comet was supposed to appear that night and there was a local gathering at the telescope for everyone to watch. 

You didn't keep up with space stuff like he did, so you had no idea. Kaito took this as an opportunity to blindfold you, drag you to the car, and take you on a little trip with him.

You heard what sounded like rain hitting the glass, and quickly questioned it. 

You couldn't see his face, but he was bright red and flustered, secretly swearing in his head. "I have no idea what you're talking about!" 

He turned the car around and began speeding towards home. When he told you to remove the blindfold, you were right back where you started. At his apartment... in his driveway. 

"Surprise!" 

He explained his original plan, extremely bummed out. You told him you could still watch it, and you'd rather watch in the comfort of his home rather than with a huge group of strangers, anyway. 

He scoffed and immediately called you lame, insisting that watching it with a group was way more fun! 

That's a lie. The thought of watching it at home never even crossed his mind so he was relieved when you said that, he just didn't want to admit because he wanted his date to be a good one. 

Though, this seemed to really cheer him up. So, you set a blanket outside and, despite the drizzle of rain, spent hours staring at the night sky. 

The comet took a lot longer to arrive than scientists thought, and it was the middle of the night. He decided to keep you until the morning, and you ended up pulling an all nighter, staring at the stars and eventually watching the sunrise together.

You both spent a solid hour looking up attractions coming to that museum and settled on one next month, and marked your calendars. 

With nothing to do for the rest of the day, and neither of you wanting to waste his time driving to you, you snuggled up with dimmed lights and listened to the rain pattering outside. 

It was calming, holding each other and listening to his soft breathing and the weather outside. It didn't storm, only lightly rained, which was rather soothing. 

The rain was also stunning, which he definitely enjoyed. It wasn’t as stunning as you, though.

You were the one to offer if he wanted to spend the night. You'd never had a sleepover with him before, so he was a little shocked. But, he hesitantly obliged. 

In reality, he was actually quite happy to get to spend an entire day AND night with his beloved.

You knew how much Gonta loved the outdoors. You collectively planned a date hiking and sightseeing, which he was completely for. 

You two were in the middle of your hike when you felt tiny droplets hit your skin. 

The look on his face spoke for itself. He looked incredibly disappointed. 

Not only that, but you were beginning to get rained out, and the ground grew muddy under your feet. 

Despite the mood change, he hoisted you up and gave you a piggy back ride until you got to the beginning of the hiking trail. 

After arriving back home, you two cleaned up. You could tell by his sulking that he didn't want your day outdoors to be ruined so easily.

Instead of moping around, you took the time to try and lighten his mood and offered to take him to dinner, which brought a bit of a smile to his face. You knew how to lift his spirits, afterall! 

You two splurged for once and went to a diner downtown, and though the rain wasn't letting up, you made jokes about it anyway. 

He also got to kiss you in the rain in front of the diner, which felt like it came right out of an old time movie. It was something he'd been wanting to do for a while now, and always said it was "the gentlemanly thing to do," admiring those who got to do it. 

You ended up spending the day outdoors anyway, playing in the rain and wishing you'd never left the hike. Oh well, you decided to make it up to him by planning a camping trip that summer! 

You were both so exhausted that you passed out together at the end of the day and had an accidental sleepover, but waking up the next morning in his arms was definitely not a bad thing.

He personally didn't like going on dates, but you haven't been on one for a while now and he wanted to do something nice for you. 

When you did go on dates, it usually wasn't something extremely fancy. So, he took you to the park. 

The two of you had just arrived at the park when it started to rain. Not heavily at first, but it definitely wasn't a good idea to stay, since he knew one of you could get easily hurt. 

He tried to remain calm, but he was obviously frustrated and grumpy. 

With a sigh and an eye roll, he took your hand and headed back home without exchanging many words. You knew it was a good idea to just leave him be for now. 

It was strange, he passed your place on the way instead of dropping you of home, and you asked him what he was up to. Hoshi looked at you in the corner of his eye and asked if you'd like to spend the night instead. 

You two had sleepovers before, but not for a while. You'd immediately grown giddy with happiness. 

Although, he seemed to be more grumpy over the fact that he caught a cold whilst in the rain and now he had you over. He didn't want to get you sick, but he also didn't want to go back on his word and take you home. 

Needless to say, you quickly caught his illness, and you spent the rest of the night trying to take care of each other the best you could. 

That meant you mostly watched series and movies for hours and complained to each other about getting the other one sick. 

Also, making lots of popcorn. 

But there was no one you'd rather catch a cold from and spend the night with.

Solving "The recordings URI contains invalid data." in Azure Speech - Batch Transcription

... or "How to remove a thumbnail from an mp3 using ffmpeg?"

Update 2020-12-10: Since writing this post, the team at Microsoft have rolled out an update of the transcription service that allows embedded media, so the workaround described in this blog post won’t be necessary any more. They have also introduced a new, more powerful API (v3) for Batch transcription; an introduction is available here.

While building the site RadioText.net (which I've blogged about here) I found that a few of the files I tried to transcribe returned an undocumented error: "The recordings URI contains invalid data." and I'll describe the solution to the (at least my) problem below.

The problem

So, the problem appeared when using Azure Speech Services - Batch transcription. Speech Services is one of the AI services in Azure provided through Azure Cogntitive Services. Batch Transcription allows for large scale, asyncronous transcription of audio files.

Initiating the transcription went fine is done using a HTTP POST like this (which of course can vary depending on your preferences):

The error is returned to you when you are querying for the transcription status:

Video stream / JPG

After some investigation, the issue is seems undocumented but is related to that the batch service requires that the audio file being transcribed need to contain audio streams exclusively. The mp3 files I were trying to transcribe had an embedded video stream containing a jpg file - basically, the thumbnails used in media players. At the moment, batch transcription can't handle audio files containing such image/video stream (confirmed with the team at Microsoft).

Solution

Until support for these media files is built into the service, it's easy for us to extract only the audio channel ourselves using ffmpeg. The following command will extract the first audio channel from Input.mp3 and output it as Output.mp3 - ready to use for batch service. It's documented under Stream selection in the ffmpeg documentation.

If we break it down:

ffmpeg: The utility

-i Input.mp3: Use Input.mp3 as input, could also be a URL (https://STORAGEACCOUNT.blob.core.windows.net/media/Audio.mp3).

-map 0:a: Use the audio (a) from the first input file (0)

map docs

-codec:a copy: Set codec option for audio (a) to only copy, this will make it very efficient as it does not need to encode anything.

Stream copy

Output.mp3: Output the new file that only contains the audio stream(s) into Output.mp3

There might be other options or tweaks that work for you, but I found this to be fast and work well to solve my problem.

Calling ffmpeg from CSharp

In my case, I wanted to run the above ffmpeg command as part of my transcription pipeline and therefore call it from C#. The below code is a minimal approach to do so:

WAFU Cup of Nations heroes Where are they now?

The sixth edition of the West Africa Football Union Cup of Nations kicks off in Thies, Senegal, on Saturday, with 15 of the region’s sides — plus guests Morocco — contesting the two-week competition.

Past editions of the tournament have thrown up some star players and memorable performers, some of whom have used it as a launch pad to greater things in their career, and others who failed to build on the promise they demonstrated in the regional showpiece for local players.

Anthony Okpotu was one of Nigeria’s most impressive players at the last edition of the tournament, scoring once as they reached the final before being defeated 4-1 by rivals Ghana in Cape Coast.

The forward didn’t initially secure a move away from the Nigerian top flight, but after top scoring for Lobi Stars with 19 league goals, he was signed by Morocco’s Difaa Hassani El Jadidi in July 2018, and is currently on loan at Albanian side Laci.

Okpotu told ESPN about the role the Wafu Cup of Nations had on launching his career and helping him establish himself beyond West Africa.

“It was the highest-level national assignment for me at the time, and I felt really happy, honoured, and privileged to be given the opportunity to represent my country,” Okpotu said.

“My memories [of the tournament] were good, because I learned – for my next assignment — that I had to improve on what I’d done at the Wafu Cup.

“It was a good opportunity, and one I capitalised on in terms of reaching greater heights in my career.”

Okpotu wasn’t the only member of Nigeria’s Wafu Cup 2017 runners-up to secure a move abroad, with Afeez Aremu (Norway), Gabriel Okechukwu (Ukraine), Stephen Eze (Bulgaria), Peter Eneji (Serbia) and Chima Akas (Sweden) all departing home soil in the aftermath of their run to the final.

Eze has also been included in the senior Nigeria squad since his performances at the Wafu Cup, while Aremu remembers clearly the influence the tournament had on his career trajectory.

“I can remember the tournaments in the [previous] two years, where we weren’t earning bonuses or allowances in camp, but I chose to go because I knew there would be a lot of scouts there, which was an advantage to me, dreaming of playing in Europe,” Aremu told ESPN.

“As you can see now, I was scouted in our first match, and that put me where I am now; I can never forget this in my life.

“These are good memories for me anytime I remember back to those days. It was a good tournament for the country, but especially for me.”

For the Ghana side that won the competition two years ago, the likes of Winful Cobbinah (Albania), Emmanuel Lomotey (Spain) and Nuhu Musah (Switzerland) all subsequently moved abroad, and the latter had appeared bound for the Africa Cup of Nations with the Black Stars before injury struck.

Some recent tournament winners haven’t, however, managed to translate fine form in the Wafu Cup to success overseas, even if they did secure foreign deals on the back of their performances in the regional championship.

Nigerian duo Ekigho Ehiosun and Ikechukwu Ibenegbu are two examples, after they scored four each as the Super Eagles again clinched silver on home soil in 2011.

The former was included in the senior set-up by Stephen Keshi, and secured a move to Turkish clubs Samsunspor and Genclerbirligi, but he’s currently without a club after being released by Israeli second-tier side Hapoel Acre.

Ibenengbu, by contrast, wasn’t able to tempt any suitors to prise him away from Heartland, and he left the club only in 2013 to move to another Nigerian side, Warri Wolves.

He featured for the Super Eagles on a handful of occasions, but, as with Ejike Uzoenyi, a small stature may have represented an obstacle too great for ‘Mosquito’ to have truly made his mark in European football.

Two years after Ehiosun and Ibenegbu fell just short, it was Ghana who clinched the title when they defeated Senegal 3-1 in the final.

The match saw differing fortunes for Ghanaian duo Kwabena Adusei and Latif Abdul Mohammed, who scored for the Black Stars on the day, and Senegalese midfielder Ousseynou Thioune, who was dismissed at the death for the Teranga Lions.

However, the trio’s fortunes have differed significantly since the conclusion of the competition.

Thioune left Diambars in 2016 to move to Ittihad Tanger in Morocco, and then north to Spain’s Gimnastic and now Sochaux of France’s Ligue 2; it’s safe to say he’s put his Wafu Cup final disappointment behind him.

The Ghanaian duo, by contrast, have struggled to take their careers to new heights despite each having a winner’s medal in their back pocket.

Defender Adusei left Asante Kotoko for Mpumalanga Black Aces in 2014, for his first foray outside Ghana, but he has been out of the game since September 2015, when he was just 28, after injury problems curtailed his stay in South Africa.

For Mohammed, who scored twice in the final victory over Senegal, Asante Kotoko’s refusal to allow him to leave for Europe in the aftermath of the tournament denied him a certain career trajectory, and, instead, the striker has traipsed around a series of African leagues; Gabon, Zambia, Ethiopia, Equatorial Guinea, and back to Ethiopia.

“[The Wafu Cup] was very successful, and by then, there was a club in Norway — Sandnes Ulf — who needed me,” Mohammed, now 29, told ESPN.

“However, my club in Ghana did not accept the offer. If I’d gone to Norway, I would still be in Europe by now.

“After the Wafu, we continued with the 2014 African Nations Championship [CHAN] in South Africa, and from there I got an offer from a club in Gabon, CF Mounana.”

While the examples of Mohammed, Adusei, Ehiosun and Ibenegbu serve as reminders of how difficult it is to translate a fine tournament showing into a long and successful career overseas, the case of Ahmed Musa proves that the Wafu Cup can be a launchpad for much greater things.

The Kano Pillars starlet was virtually unknown when he clinched the title with Nigeria in 2010, scoring twice en route to the gold, but he quickly progressed through the ranks to the full senior side while securing a successful career for himself in Europe.

He has represented the Super Eagles at two World Cups — no Nigerian has scored more than him in the tournament; has won the Africa Cup of Nations; and has represented CSKA Moscow, Leicester City and Al-Nassr, winning four league titles in the process.

Musa remains the tournament’s greatest success story, but can any of the hopefuls at the 2019 edition follow in his footsteps?

USGBCs+ Global LEED is an extension of USGBC. The addition to USGBC is an inclusion to European building standards for European Countries. Scandinavia is one of the leading countries to incorporate a high rising amount of LEED certified buildings. The Stockholm Waterfront also known locally as Klara Hotell och Konferens (translated The Klara Hotel Conference Center). Optimally the building sits on the Riddarfjärden, the easternmost bay of Lake Mälaren which flows into the Baltic Sea.  One of the shining jewels of Stockholm, Sweden (Klarabergsviadukten 61 Stockholm, 111 64 Sweden) attracting international visitors and locals for conferences and events. The owner of the building Is Jarl Asset Management which the City of Stockholm commissioned for managing the project. Construction began 2007 and finished in 2010. Stockholm Waterfront earned LEED Gold 62/110 Credits. A majority of the credits were earned through energy efficient aspects. It has been stated in several articles the notable Stockholm Waterfront is one of the most energy efficient building and used processes uncommon to most building construction.

The following is the credit breakdown for the LEED Gold Certification

Site was originally an old mail terminal and is located within the up and coming neighborhood; Norrmalm

SSc2 Development density and community connectivity 5 / 5

Stockholm Waterfront is located in the heart of city creating access within walking distance of several amenities including Stockholm Central Station, Public Parking, Bus, stores, Art Galleries and Museums.

SSc4.1 Alternative transportation - public transportation access 6 / 6

Stockholm Central Station, Public Parking, Bus (City Terminal), have drop off points creating easy access and walking to the building. The hotel part of the building offers free use of bikes.

SSc4.2 Alternative transportation - bicycle storage and changing rooms 1 / 1

Changing rooms and lockers are placed near bicycle storage of building.

Stockholm Waterfront provided electric charging stations for 5% of the total amount of parking available. Stations have preferential status for drivers with a 20% discount parking rate.

Public Parking is near the building itself at just a few of the offered locations: Torsgatan 1 parking in the read of Cloud Nine Restaurant. Lindex a clothing store off of Regeringsgatan 15 has parking behind. Both businesses are approximately half a mile or 800 meters from Stockholm Waterfront..Norr Mälarstrand 2-80 is an open surface lot at about ¾ of a mile or 1,200 meters from the conference center.

The roof of the structure is split 50% with vegetation, to incorporate more biodiversity. The remaining 50% of the roof is low albedo with an SRI index of 80 per ASTM International Standard E1980.

A common way to establish an IPsec tunnel on Linux is to use an IKE daemon, like the one from the strongSwan project, with a minimal configuration1:

The same configuration can be used on both sides. Each side will figure out if it is “left” or “right”. The IPsec site-to-site tunnel endpoints are 2001:db8:­1::1 and 2001:db8:­2::1. The protected subnets are 2001:db8:­a1::/64 and 2001:db8:­a2::/64. As a result, strongSwan configures the following policies in the kernel:

This kind of IPsec tunnel is a policy-based VPN: encapsulation and decapsulation are governed by these policies. Each of them contains the following elements:

a direction (out, in or fwd2),

a selector (source subnet, destination subnet, protocol, ports),

a mode (transport or tunnel),

an encapsulation protocol (esp or ah), and

the endpoint source and destination addresses.

When a matching policy is found, the kernel will look for a corresponding security association (using reqid and the endpoint source and destination addresses):

If no security association is found, the packet is put on hold and the IKE daemon is asked to negotiate an appropriate one. Otherwise, the packet is encapsulated. The receiving end identifies the appropriate security association using the SPI in the header. Two security associations are needed to establish a bidirectionnal tunnel:

All IPsec implementations are compatible with policy-based VPNs. However, some configurations are difficult to implement. For example, consider the following proposition for redundant site-to-site VPNs:

A possible configuration between V1-1 and V2-1 could be:

Each time a subnet is modified on one site, the configurations need to be updated on all sites. Moreover, overlapping subnets (2001:db8:­a6::/64 on one side and 2001:db8:­a6::cc:1/128 at the other) can also be problematic.

The alternative is to use route-based VPNs: any packet traversing a pseudo-interface will be encapsulated using a security policy bound to the interface. This brings two features:

Routing daemons can be used to distribute routes to be protected by the VPN. This decreases the administrative burden when many subnets are present on each side.

Encapsulation and decapsulation can be executed in a different routing instance or namespace. This enables a clean separation between a private routing instance (where VPN users are) and a public routing instance (where VPN endpoints are).

Route-based VPN on Juniper

Before looking at how to achieve that on Linux, let’s have a look at the way it works with a JunOS-based platform (like a Juniper vSRX). This platform as long-standing history of supporting route-based VPNs (a feature already present in the Netscreen ISG platform).

Let’s assume we want to configure the IPsec VPN from V3-2 to V1-1. First, we need to configure the tunnel interface and bind it to the “private” routing instance containing only internal routes (with IPv4, they would have been RFC 1918 routes):

The second step is to configure the VPN:

We get a route-based VPN because we bind the st0.1 interface to the VPN-V1-1 VPN. Once the VPN is up, any packet entering st0.1 will be encapsulated and sent to the 2001:db8:­1::1 endpoint.

The last step is to configure BGP in the “private” routing instance to exchange routes with the remote site:

The export filter OUR-ROUTES needs to select the routes to be advertised to the other peers. For example:

The configuration needs to be repeated for the other peers. The complete version is available on GitHub. Once the BGP sessions are up, we start learning routes from the other sites. For example, here is the route for 2001:db8:­a1::/64:

It was learnt both from V1-1 (through st0.1) and V1-2 (through st0.2). The route is part of the private routing instance but encapsulated packets are sent/received in the public routing instance. No route-leaking is needed for this configuration. The VPN cannot be used as a gateway from internal hosts to external hosts (or vice-versa). This could also have been done with JunOS’ security policies (stateful firewall rules) but doing the separation with routing instances also ensure routes from different domains are not mixed and a simple policy misconfiguration won’t lead to a disaster.

Route-based VPN on Linux

Starting from Linux 3.15, a similar configuration is possible with the help of a virtual tunnel interface3. First, we create the “private” namespace:

Any “private” interface needs to be moved to this namespace (no IP is configured as we can use IPv6 link-local addresses):

Then, we create vti6, a tunnel interface (similar to st0.1 in the JunOS example):

The tunnel interface is created in the initial namespace and moved to the “private” one. It will remember its original namespace where it will process encapsulated packets. Any packet entering the interface will temporarily get a firewall mark of 6 that will be used only to match the appropriate IPsec policy4 below. The kernel sets a low MTU on the interface to handle any possible combination of ciphers and protocols. We set it to 1500 and let PMTUD do its work.

We can then configure strongSwan5:

The IKE daemon configures the following policies in the kernel:

Those policies are used for any source or destination as long as the firewall mark is equal to 6, which matches the mark configured for the tunnel interface.

The last step is to configure BGP to exchange routes. We can use BIRD for this:

Once BIRD is started in the “private” namespace, we can check routes are learned correctly:

The above route was learnt from both V3-1 (through vti5) and V3-2 (through vti6). Like for the JunOS version, there is no route-leaking between the “private” namespace and the initial one. The VPN cannot be used as a gateway between the two namespaces, only for encapsulation. This also prevent a misconfiguration (for example, IKE daemon not running) from allowing packets to leave the private network.

As a bonus, unencrypted traffic can be observed with tcpdump on the tunnel interface:

fwd is for incoming packets on non-local addresses. It only makes sense in transport mode and is a Linux-only particularity. ↩

Virtual tunnel interfaces (VTI) were introduced in Linux 3.6 (for IPv4) and Linux 3.12 (for IPv6). Appropriate namespace support was added in 3.15. KLIPS, an alternative out-of-tree stack available since Linux 2.2, also features tunnel interfaces. ↩

The mark is set right before doing a policy lookup and restored after that. Consequently, it doesn’t affect other possible uses (filtering, routing). However, as Netfilter can also set a mark, one should be careful for conflicts. ↩

The ciphers used here are the strongest ones currently possible while keeping compatibility with JunOS. The documentation for strongSwan contains a complete list of supported algorithms as well as security recommendations to choose them. ↩

Stop dragging kids away from their screens

Every parent thinks it’s healthy for their kids to play outside. I want it for my kids, my parents wanted it for me, and my grandparents wanted the same for my parents. Right now, it’s a hot topic among parents that mobile phones are turning kids into zombies who tune out and do nothing else but play games and chat. Parents introduce ‘screentime’ and have long discussions with each other about handling their kids’ screen addiction and how get them to go out and play outside, like normal kids.

I’ve got some advice for those parents: Take a deep breath and leave your kid alone. They’re fine. They’re enjoying a new world that you don’t understand. Their brains aren’t melting, they’re not turning into zombies. In fact, they are probably more social and connected than any generation before them. They are probably more concerned with what’s happening with the rest of the world than you ever were. Playing outside is overrated.

I’m not even kidding. Consider this:

My grandfather was deeply concerned about my fathers behavior when he was a teenager, because all he did was sit inside and read comic books

My father was deeply concerned about my behavior when I was a teenager, because all I did was sit inside and watch television

My uncle was deeply concerned with my cousin’s behavior when he was a teenager, because all he did was sit inside and play video games

My sister is deeply concerned with her kids’ behavior now they are teenagers, because all they want to do is sit inside and play MMORPGs

See my point? I once heard a myth that at one point French politicians debated whether to ban the ‘Chaise longue’ (basically a couch) in France because they were afraid it would become popular and prevent children from – surprise – playing outside.

So here’s a thought: Maybe kids need to sit in a corner and do mind-numbing things as they grow up, Maybe that subtly activates their brain activity and allows them to grow up, build their character and help them adjust to life. Does playing outside help with that too? Sure! But don’t despair.

At my local candy store they learnt a long time ago how to stop employees from eating all the candy. It’s a simple and elegant solution. On their first day, the owners give them a large bag of candy, and tell them to eat as much as they want. Within a week these new people simply get fed up with eating candy. They’re quite literally sick of it.

The same goes for kids: If you ban using computers from their lives, that will turn into exactly the thing they want to do most. But give them access, and they will spend an unnatural (to you) amount of time with their computers, and then move on to other things. There will be a point when they want to go outside to play. It might take a while, but it will happen.

I have two teenage daughters myself, and yes, they spend a lot of time on their laptops and phones. Sometimes it drives me crazy. This is me, last weekend, trying to persuade the youngest one to join me to the beach – it took me 30 minutes, because she was playing Minecraft with another teenager on the other side of the world.

Naturally I told her that playing outside, with me, was more fun than staring at her laptop. Eventually she agreed, but she was in the middle of a game, and tried to explain how it would be super rude to her co-players to just quit a game midway through. It would be about as impolite as interrupting a live conversation of mine, shouting ‘TAKE ME FOR A WALK, DADDY! A WALK WITH ME IS WAY MORE FUN THAN YOUR CONVERSATION’.

If that happened, I would probably tell her how it’s polite to wait for me to finish my story, before asking what she wants.

That made me think: If that is how we want to teach our children to behave, then why do we get angry with them when they don’t put their phones away the moment we demand their attention? Maybe all we have to give them is a little bit of time.

Obviously not all parents will agree with me, and if you are one of those, maybe you should check out this subreddit, where you will find lots of ammunition to troll your kid.

USGBCs+ Global LEED is an extension of USGBC. The addition to USGBC is an inclusion to European building standards for European Countries. Scandinavia is one of the leading countries to incorporate a high rising amount of LEED certified buildings. The Stockholm Waterfront also known locally as Klara Hotell och Konferens (translated The Klara Hotel Conference Center). Optimally the building sits on the Riddarfjärden, the easternmost bay of Lake Mälaren which flows into the Baltic Sea.  One of the shining jewels of Stockholm, Sweden (Klarabergsviadukten 61 Stockholm, 111 64 Sweden) attracting international visitors and locals for conferences and events. The owner of the building Is Jarl Asset Management which the City of Stockholm commissioned for managing the project. Construction began 2007 and finished in 2010. Stockholm Waterfront earned LEED Gold 62/110 Credits. A majority of the credits were earned through energy efficient aspects. It has been stated in several articles the notable Stockholm Waterfront is one of the most energy efficient building and used processes uncommon to most building construction.

The following is the credit breakdown for the LEED Gold Certification

SUSTAINABLE SITES AWARDED: 19 / 26

SSc1 Site selection 1 / 1

Site was originally an old mail terminal and is located within the up and coming neighborhood; Norrmalm

SSc2 Development density and community connectivity 5 / 5

Stockholm Waterfront is located in the heart of city creating access within walking distance of several amenities including Stockholm Central Station, Public Parking, Bus, stores, Art Galleries and Museums.

SSc4.1 Alternative transportation - public transportation access 6 / 6

Stockholm Central Station, Public Parking, Bus (City Terminal), have drop off points creating easy access and walking to the building. The hotel part of the building offers free use of bikes.

SSc4.2 Alternative transportation - bicycle storage and changing rooms 1 / 1

Changing rooms and lockers are placed near bicycle storage of building.  

SSc4.3 Alternative transportation - low-emitting and fuel-efficient vehicles 3 / 3

Stockholm Waterfront provided electric charging stations for 5% of the total amount of parking available. Stations have preferential status for drivers with a 20% discount parking rate.

Public Parking is near the building itself at just a few of the offered locations: Torsgatan 1 parking in the read of Cloud Nine Restaurant. Lindex a clothing store off of Regeringsgatan 15 has parking behind. Both businesses are approximately half a mile or 800 meters from Stockholm Waterfront..Norr Mälarstrand 2-80 is an open surface lot at about ¾ of a mile or 1,200 meters from the conference center.

The roof of the structure is split 50% with vegetation, to incorporate more biodiversity. The remaining 50% of the roof is low albedo with an SRI index of 80 per ASTM International Standard E1980.

Use of local vegetation and grouping of plants based on watering needs. Both of these factors minimize maintenance all the while increasing curb appeal.

Rain water is captured from the roof and low flow faucets and toilets restructure the traditional use of removal of waste. The system in place offsets the use and energy of local amenities encouraging a self sufficient system.

Use of low flow faucets and toilets were installed in all restrooms.The faucets are rated at .5 Gallons per Minute (GPM). Alternative water source is included in credit EAc4 Enhanced refrigerant Mgmt with Lake Klara Sjö​ (Lake Klara) the nearby canal provides a water source, which the building collects and stores in the basement as ice storage.

The building naturally generates heat through the glass facades which act like solar collectors.

Stockholm Waterfront has a documented commissioning process and was approved by commissioning authority in compliance with ASHRAE Guideline 0–2005 and ASHRAE Guideline 1.1–2007.

Lake Klara Sjö​ (Lake Klara) the nearby canal provides a water source, which the building collects and stores in the basement as ice storage. A control system uses the water to transfers energy throughout the building. Thus, addressing all cooling needs.

PEAB diverted 50% of construction waste. Dumpsters were set up for individual separation of materials into three streams (glass, metal, and plastic).

Furniture was brought in from Green Furniture Concept (GFC) is an international furniture company with a Nordic supply facility. Furniture is comprised of upcycled materials and based on regional Nordic Ecolabel (3rd party labeler, verification of quality) as a base standard.

Local materials were shipped for the project 90% of which came from local distributors. This meant materials were brought in from 100 miles minimizing fuel and shipping costs.

System is in place for outdoor air flow and delivery to the structure. Monitoring of the control system is configured outdoor airflow to maintain intervals of 15 minutes.

Mechanically vented spaces meets requirements with 30% of outdoor air ventilation to occupied spaces based on ASHRAE International Standard 62.1-2004.

PEAB submitted an Indoor Air Quality plan. MERV rating of 8 for filtration systems and all materials are properly closed off and kept from exposure to dust, moisture, and other materials.

Concordant system was installed for this specific project. Heat is moved and distributed between The building by a water pump.The water pump pulls heat between your house and water drawn from Lake Klara Sjo which is stored in 250 Tons of ice tanks which can be found in the basement.

The use of rain water is captured from the roof and low flow faucets and toilets restructure the traditional use of removal of waste. The system in place offsets the use and energy of local amenities encouraging a self sufficient system.
