“Please excuse us.” Deku and Mirio said as they took off their shoes and entered your apartment. The two boys had taken it upon themselves to hand over the document Sir Nighteye had been meaning to give you.
“Make yourselves at home.” You led them to the living room. Whatever remnants of Overhaul’s scent or belongings were long gone by now. True to his word, he left right after breakfast but not without burning toast and eggs for breakfast. He looked pissed as fuck but the picture on your phone was well worth the exploding sofa. “Also, no need to take off your shoes.”
“Thank you so much, (l/n)-san!” Deku said as they took a seat and took in the decoration. Taking note of how many rooms and how clean the place was, he couldn’t help but wonder how it would feel like to support himself.
“I wasn’t able to restock my fridge.” You placed two cans of soda in front of them. Both their eyes sparkling at the free drink. “This is all I can offer for now~”
“This is more than enough, (l/n)-san!” Mirio cheered as he opened the can of soda and chugged it. “Oh! Here’s the files that Sir Nighteye wanted to give you. He also wishes you a speedy recovery. Oh, and he wants to know if you’re fit to attend the heroes meeting the day after tomorrow.”
Accepting the files, you placed the folder beside you and answered the other questions he had thrown. Satisfied with your answer, the boy laughed and tried to say a punchline.
“You sure do have a sense of humor, Lemillion.” Looking at your bedroom door, you couldn’t help but snicker at the thought of Overhaul’s jacket resting on his side of the bed. Hmm, his side of the bed was a strong word and one you were sure you wouldn’t be able to use again. “How’s school, you two?”
“It’s fine. We’re just focusing now on our internships but the others are still attending school.” Deku answered.
“Ah, by the way, are you feeling much better now?” Mirio chimed in. “You seem to be alone.”
“Yeah, I’m fine.” You shrugged and touched the spot of the closed bullet hole. “Things didn’t exactly turn out as planned but there’s still next time~”
“We received news that Overhaul ended up killing a suspect?”
“Hm? Well, yes he did.” You almost forgot about that. “We still caught one so I guess it isn’t all that bad.”
“How did you get used to your work, (l/n)-san?” Deku inquired.
“I can’t say I’m used to it. I still get chills every now and then but as long as things turn out for the better, it makes it worthwhile. Besides, the injuries we get are nothing compared to what heroes get. We’re merely support.” You smirked. “Pawns for the bigger pieces, if I may say so myself.”
“Hahaha! You say that like heroes aren’t all that, (l/n)-san!” Mirio laughed and held on to his stomach.
“I never implied that.” You looked at the view of your window and back at them. Not holding it back, you sighed. “Listen. Everyone wants to be a hero, I get it. But when life hits you, sometimes ya gotta do what you have to do. My field of work requires me to make a constant string of decisions. I’ve worked for heroes who have red marks on their files. Some even with questionable motives. But it’s also important to take note of those who were not seen in their times of need.”
“Isn’t that a little harsh?”
“Barely. The glitz and glamour of being a hero are blinding to those aspiring one’s. Same goes for those who aren’t on the heroes side.” You stood up and the two boy’s followed. “Don’t take this the wrong way kids. Not everyone can be saved. Now, I’m not telling you guys to stop chasing your dreams or shit. I just want you to be aware that the world is unfair. Now go to do your patrols.”
The moment they bid farewell and your locks clicked, you went back to the living room and sat down. Fingers slowly touching the fabric. Every single crease, fold, and dip your sofa had. Finding nothing, you painstakingly began to check each room and vase your unit had to offer. Seeing as things were clear, you decided a small trip to the third floor was necessary.
Grabbing your phone, you went to your bedroom and opened the window. Dialing a number, you waited for the other person to pick up.
“Hurry. I don’t have much time.”
“Chrono. Did you destroy the tracker?”
“I did. 2 days ago.” He paused and lowered his voice. “Why?”
“Nothing. How did you dispose of it?”
“Used some equipment we have here.”
“Thanks. Go do your shit.” Hearing a chuckle, you ended the call and closed the windows.
It didn’t take too long but now you were inside the elevator. The faint sound of elevator music keeping you company as the buttons lit up. Once you arrived on the third floor, you walked down the hallway and took a detour to one of the off limit doors.
Knocking 5 times, the door opened.
“Why hello to you, (y/n)~”
“Same goes for you, Roshi-san~” You tilted your head and gave him a peace sign. “Busy?”
“Not at all. Come in, come in! Shall I prepare your throne, princess?”
“And rid you of yours? I just wanna check something.” Taking a Y1000 from your pocket, Roshi took it with a wink and stuffed it into his.
Watching his fingers tapping on the keyboard, a window popped up indicating that a bunch of videos were being transported into a folder. As that was happening, he took a flash drive and connected it. With a few more taps and clicks, he turned around and faced you.
“Paranoid, princess?”
“Not much. Just have to make sure, you know?”
“This about Overhaul?” The bluish twinkle in his eyes made you laugh. “Bingo~ Don’t worry boo, I’ve deleted and looped each and every footage that showed him he even entered within a 100m radius.”
“Remind me why you prefer to work here and not back at the house?”
Roshi Matsui. One of your father’s most trusted members. It had been a few years since he decided to leave the compound and take up a job that made use of his quirk. Though admittedly, he was also one of the reasons why your father chose the apartment building. He felt safe enough to entrust his only daughter to this member.
“I get bored easily.” Facing the screen once more, he tapped away and ejected the flash drive. “Everything you need is in here, princess. You’re in for a wild ride.”
“Thanks for the warning.”
“Shall I continue with your request?”
“Yes, please.”
“Alright~ Have a great day~ OH send my kisses to Geiby-boo.” Right. You keep forgetting that these two were related. Cousins. Giving him the response he wanted, he stood up to open the doors for you. Just as you were about to step outside, Roshi grabbed your arm and smirked. “Not that I care what you do, (n/n)... be sure to check your doors. Aight?”
“I will~”
With hurried steps, you reached the elevator and clicked on your floor. Roshi usually kept an eye on your floor but it was never really needed before. That sudden warning was nothing but bad news as each button lit up. Using your quirk to calm yourself, you stepped out and made your way to your room.
Taking your keys from your pocket, it slipped and jingled its way to the floor. Kneeling to pick it up, you examined the corner pads, sweep, and sill. Seeing nothing, you grabbed your keys and stretched. Eyes scanning the header and the jam. It was still clear of any shiny objects.
Not satisfied with the results, you entered your room and locked your door. Inspecting it from within was much less confining. Yet, there were no indications that your place had been bugged.
“Unless…” Of all the things you barely checked, it would have to be the peephole. “Ah shit.”
True enough, the peephole was blocked and you were met with a tiny lens that seemed to be adjusting its aperture. Heading to where you kept your toolbox, you uttered a string of curses. The want to watch the CCTV footage grew stronger but first things first.
It took awhile but you got the job done. Careful that the small camera wasn’t damaged, you managed to pull it out. The tiny dot of green light indicated that it was still recording. Covering the new whole with some electrical tape, you went to the kitchen and reached for two bowls. Caging the device with the two bowls, you placed it in the fridge to ensure you were safe.
Now in your bedroom, you dialled his number.
“What is it, (y/n)?”
“I don’t like being bugged, Chisaki.”
“And why would I do that? You already pester me with phone AND video calls. I see no need to do that.” There was a pause in the line. “Though, I would be a hypocrite if I wouldn’t admit to the thought of actually doing it.”
“I don’t like liars.”
“Would I ever lie to you?” There was a teasing tone to his voice.
“You might~ I can never guess you right.” If it wasn’t him then who would? “That’s all for now, birdman. W-will you call me later?”
“If my schedule permits it, then I shall.”
“Such a tease…”
“I can do more than teasing, (y/n).”
“Oh shut it.” Ending the call, you resisted the urge to squeal.
Rubbing your face, you groaned and sunk into the sofa, your body feeling tired after all the moving you had done today. Perhaps you weren’t fully healed yet. Dialing another number, you waited for the other person to pick up.
“Nao?”
“Ah. (y/n). You okay now?”
“Not fully but I can head to work tomorrow. Are things alright there? How’s the report for the raid?”
“It’s still in the drafts but it shouldn’t be too hard for you to pick up.”
“Email it to me. I can start working on it now.”
“Sure.” He paused. “How’re things with Rusai?”
“Who?”
“Your caretaker?”
Oh. He was given an alias. Something you didn’t know. Then again, you didn’t bother as to how he even became your ‘legal guardian’ during those tiring times.
“Things were rather interesting to be honest. A bit of a rough 20 minutes when I woke up but other than that, things improved significantly~” You stared at the entryway and bit your tongue. “Deku and Mirio dropped by but he left earlier than planned.”
“Deku and Mirio? Isn’t that…”
“I know. I took care of it. Though, I have a feeling something’s about to happen again.”
“Be careful, (n/n).”
“I will~ Now go do your thing~”
Reaching for your laptop, you unlocked and connected the flash drive. Waiting a few seconds, you opened the folder and grabbed a pillow. Clicking on the first video, upped the speed and began to watch as to who could have possibly planted that bug on your door.
As the hours ticked by and your legs falling asleep alternatively, you took a glance at your windows and realized that the sun was now setting. Stretching your entire body, you could feel the tension being released. Pausing the current video, you groaned and layed down on the sofa. Hair splaying everywhere.
Roshi was right.
It really was indeed a wild ride.

What is your current obsession?
It’s summer in Boston!! Summer!! Sun!! Beaches!! Happiness!! Exploration!! Random road closures*!! Outdoors!! Fireworks!! NO PSETS!! Events!!
So, this is my first summer NOT with my family in Florida and my first summer in Boston. I will say that although I arrived at MIT last year at the end of August for an FPOP (Freshman Pre-Orientation Program), it is not in any way comparable to spending a full summer here. And even though I spent nine months taking classes over freshman year, the warmth and sun of the summer is nothing like the freezing, sun-less, soul-sucking days of winter. You might be asking, ‘Layal, what are you doing in Boston over the summer? Are you taking classes at MIT or something? Why don’t you have an internship or go abroad, yada yada—’ Well to answer your many questions, I chose to be here! (Also MIT doesn’t offer classes in the summer so that we can all actually get a life ;P )
What exactly do I do? I am here as a Residential Facilitator for the Interphase EDGE Program and a UROP in the Media Lab, Personal Robots group. And what does all of that mean? The Interphase EDGE Program is a summer program for incoming MIT students to help ease their transition into freshman fall. As an RFA, I am responsible for overseeing a ‘cluster’ of three first-years/freshmen/frosh, teaching a workshop/recitation section, of which I teach chemistry, and being present as a guide and resource to help the seventy Interphase scholars. This is probably the most fun job you can get in the summer (though I might be a little biased). With it, I get the satisfaction of being a mentor to the incoming freshmen, the experience of being a TA for a class, and if that already wasn’t cool enough, as bonuses I get breakfast, dinner, and a single in Maseeh with a partial river view! There’s nothing I dislike about this job, and the people I interact with make it worth every moment (and there’s really nothing like being in a single, which I could probably write another entire blog post about). And my UROP is a UROP, which doesn’t explain much. I guess it might not be as good of an explanation as I first thought since any time I do any random craftwork/work not on my computer, my friends ask me if I’m working on my UROP. I mean, sometimes yeah, I am ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
In actuality, the work I do for my UROP surrounds the idea of designing social robots for older adults. I had started working on this UROP in the spring, designing icons that would be used for the interactive part of the study. This summer, I worked on analyzing transcripts from interviews done by my supervisor with respect to her long-term study and designing tools that could be used to make the interactive part of the study low-cost and portable. As it stands, the icons are stored and used on a very expensive HP Sprout which, from experience, is heavy and very hard to transport to the participants. It has been really interesting hearing older adults’ opinions on technology, their life needs, and the idea of social robots catered to them. The UROP allows me to think creatively to complete assigned tasks, and that is my favorite part of the job.
All of this background is here just to set the tone of my summer, a general what have I been up to sort of thing. What I really want to talk about is my new obsession.
Since getting to Boston last year, I have loved exploring the city, or rather, walking across Harvard Bridge as an excuse not to do psets. I have lived in suburbia my entire life, and as tiresome as some aspects of Boston can be, I have fallen in love with the city. Since nowadays I have much more free time than I do during the academic year, I am OBSESSED with exploring more of Boston. The city comes to life over the summer, with a host of events, food, and fun. Here is a list of some of the fun things Boston has to offer that I’ve done in the past two months:
1. Travel to New York City!
Okay, this isn’t exactly Boston, but its location is ideal for a day trip to NYC. A friend of mine is doing an internship there, and so we joined her for 24 hours of fun in the Big Apple. A car rental and five hours later, we were exploring the city. We had bagels for breakfast, roamed around Central Park, had food cart food (big yum), walked along the High Line, stared in awe at the Oculus, and wandered through Times Square. New York City is also accessible by train and by bus, and whatever way you get there, it’s a trip I highly recommend! Though again, I might be biased because there is just something about NYC that makes me fall in love with it every single time I visit.
The NYC skyline from the Staten Island ferry
The 9/11 Memorial and the Oculus at the World Trade Center
2. Watch the 4th of July fireworks (and join in on the other festivities)!
If you’re in Boston over the summer, you can’t miss the 4th of July. Like it is physically impossible to avoid this holiday, given that Boston is America’s birthplace. The festivities begin with a flag-raising ceremony at Boston City Hall at 9am, leading to a nice little parade that takes you to the Old State House, where the entirety of the Declaration of Independence is read from the same balcony that it was read from every year since 1776. Throughout the day there are numerous celebrations to get you in a patriotic mood. There is the famous Boston Pops concert that happens across the river on the Esplanade right before the fireworks, which I did not attend but could hear from Memorial Drive.
The fireworks are a very big deal. Large boats that will be lined with fireworks begin to show up on the river from three or four days before the fourth, Harvard bridge is shut down from 4pm the day-of so it can be ready for the show. Rooftops and tall buildings with a river view are lined with people. Since the unofficial best place to watch the fireworks is on the Cambridge side, I collected my work for the day, grabbed a blanket, and sat on a nice, grassy patch of Killian Court when the sun began to set. There were so many people on both sides of the river, an estimated half a million just on the Boston side! And the show was very much worth the wait.

Fireworks!!!
3. Go to Maria’s Pastry Shop!
I am an outlier of sorts in that I don’t like the infamous Mike’s Pastry’s cannolis. I really don’t. But I wasn’t worried because the North End has no shortage of pastry shops or cannoli options to try. I heard a lot about Maria’s Pastry Shop so one weekday morning before I had to go in for my UROP, I took an Uber with friends to eat some freshly baked goods and cannolis. And holy cannoli it was good. 10/10, will eat again.
(I have no pictures of the cannolis, I ate them immediately)
4. Go to Revere Beach!
Walking through Boston, it doesn’t feel like the coast could be so close and accessible, but it is! Just a hop, skip, and jump away from campus is a beach you can visit for $5 roundtrip on the subway. Just take the red line, transfer to orange, and go all the way down the blue line to Wonderland: even the name of the stop expresses how nice the place is. On a really hot summer day, the water is perfectly cool, and the sand is smooth and soft. I’ve made this trip multiple times since I came to MIT, and over the summer I took a trip with a large group of Interphase scholars! It is a very accessible way to get away from campus and return to nature, at the open border between land and water.
Beach Day at Revere!
5. Eat pie at Petsi Pies (and visit the school down the street)!
At the outskirts of Greater Boston is one of the most delicious pie places I’ve ever tried. I was actually introduced to the place by my UROP supervisor when we went to Cohasset to visit some study participants, and I have been enamored ever since. Peach Blackberry with Walnut Crumb. Brown Butter Pecan Pie. It tastes even better than they sound. This would have been a quick trip on the Red Line, but on the day in question, the Red Line was broken :(
After getting there, we walked towards a small park to eat, then to Harvard Square for dinner. While walking there I noticed that the Curious George store was missing from its corner (no! what a travesty!) but then I found out it was moving to Central Square (yay! it will be closer!) so that was fun. Walking through Harvard campus, I felt like I was intruding on the place or something lol. We visited Widener Library to get our complementary Harvard library cards for access to their library and shuttle system, but it was closed for the day. I will be back to Harvard sometime soon for that.
What happened with the cannolis happened with the pies ;(
6. Take the Commuter Rail!
There is a really awesome deal right now that I believe began around when summer started, and that is the $10 unlimited weekend commuter rail pass, valid on Saturdays and Sundays. Some trips on the commuter rail are $10 for a one-way ticket, so this is actually a very good deal. One Saturday, a large group of friends and I took the commuter rail to Manchester-by-the-Sea (yes, like from the movie) and walked over to Singing Beach, a picture-perfect beach, and the most beautiful one I have visited yet. Yes, I’m from Florida. The waves were the clearest blue, the sand, the lightest beige, and the sky was bright with the heat of the sun. The water was perfect.
We then got back on the commuter rail and spent the rest of the day in Rockport, a little seaside town made infamous by its artists, seafood, and quaint, colorful buildings. We took a stroll down Bearskin Neck, ate lobster rolls at Roy Moore’s, and tasted samples of delicious fudge from the Fudgery. All this was a mere hour-long train ride away.
On Sunday, we took the commuter rail west, all on the same $10 pass, and went to a farm to go fruit picking in Sherborn. We walked between peach trees and enjoyed the warm weather with good conversation and laughter. The day ended back in Boston, with a walk through Chinatown.
There are many more great stops on the commuter rail, including Concord, Salem, and Gloucester. I can’t wait to explore more of the commuter rail.

Peaches at Sunshine Farms in Sherborn
My first summer in Boston has been super fun and overall a great success, and I still have about half a month left of it to go. My next few weekends aren’t planned yet, but I can’t wait to see what’s in store!
*This actually happens way too often in the summer that it's kind of getting annoying. Boston’s commute is already a mess: from the red line derailment, the MBTA fare hike, construction and lane closures everywhere, don’t even get me started on rush hour traffic. Mass Ave is at a standstill for…a parade? A street race? Huh? I mean guess the dance party was pretty awesome. And the 4th of July fireworks. I have to admit it’s cool sometimes :P

***BEWARE: The Top 10 Triggers that Endanger your Addiction Recovery
Various “triggers” can put people at risk of relapsing into old patterns of addiction. A christmas dinner ideas can be as simple as people, places, or feelings that initiate a desire, or craving or reminder of past addictive behaviors. Causes of relapse can differ for each person. Pay attention to the following ten situations, events and feelings as they are the most common causes to relapse: 1. Negative emotional states
Strong feelings such as anger, sadness, trauma or stress, overwhelm, anxiety, and loneliness can trigger a desire to use. One of the main reasons for using substances and christmas dinner ideas is to feel better. 2. Physical discomfort
Discomfort from any physical cause such as withdrawal or physical pain, hunger, sleeplessness or insomnia can cause someone to seek relief of that pain through addictive substances. 3. Positive emotional states
There are often feeling of joy and the belief that, by using a drug or other addictive substance, the feeling can be enhanced or prolonged. 4. Testing personal christmas desserts
Sometimes the thought, “I have this under control now. I am doing so well. I can just have one and stop,” brings on what can be called the “testing behavior.” Unfortunately the end result is usually a massive relapse. 5. Strong temptations or urges
When cravings and compulsions surface, deal with them immediately. Romancing a craving (indulging in the behavior in one’s imagination) will eventually put the person at risk of relapse. 6. Conflict with others
Getting into altercations and arguments can trigger fight, flight or freeze responses, which can overwhelm and cause relapse. 7. Good times with others
Certain situations at work, or in social circles almost “require” one to drink as well as family functions where alcohol or other substances may be present, cause real pressure to relapse and are extremely dangerous. Change of environment 8. Moving to another city, state or a sudden change or loss of support such as deaths of friends, partners, friends where one feels unsure, in grief or overwhelmed and adrift.
These events are a problem especially if there is no support available. 9. Being around friends, places or associating with people involved in the drug or behavior of choice.
Especially in beginning recovery, it is wise to avoid old friends, connections and places that exert peer pressure and cause “temporary amnesia” about the choice for recovery and the desire to stay clean and sober. This is also often a trigger for the thought, “Just once won’t hurt.” 10. Boredom
This often-overlooked trigger can occur with someone who has no structure, purpose or meaning in his/her life and is simply looking for a way to increase excitement or to feel excited. College: Make It Through With Flying Colors
No matter where you are staying on campus, college is always fun. You will meet people, learn things and discover interests you may have not known you had. Get the most out of your college Tesol Certification life with the help of these tips.
Loans can be extremely beneficial if you don't have the necessary funds to pay for your schooling. College will pay off in the future, so taking a small amount of debt can be useful if you truly need it.
Know which college best suits your career path. You'll be able to choose the right college for your end goal that way. If you are in doubt, talk to an admissions director.
The surrounding environment is critical in determining your propensity to study effectively. Your dorm room isn't usually the best place to study. Choose a place with no distractions, instead. The school library is always a good choice. If you have no other options, invest in a pair of noise-cancelling headphones.
Seating arrangements may actually have the ability to impact your college grades. Instead of sitting at the back of a class to avoid your professor's attention, sit up front where you will be more attentive. You are sure to feel more fully engaged and will have the ability to ask lots of questions.
Make general ed part of your first semester. When there is a class you need in order to graduate, it is best to take it sooner rather than later. Also, you probably aren't going to enjoy being one of the only seniors in your class that contains mostly freshman if you procrastinate.
Always buy used textbooks. The textbooks you need to buy can be very costly. Tuition is also very expensive, so you'll want to save money in any way possible. Go around to local bookstores and check out online ones as well to find books. Buying your books used will allow you to spend more money on other things that you also need.
Wait to buy your books until your classes begin in order to save as much money as possible. Sometimes, the "required" book is not really needed. This is common in online classes. Many find that the material covered online and in lectures provides enough knowledge to succeed.
Cultivate a good relationship with your professor. Your number one resource in college is your professor, and they are able to provide you with a lot of assistance.
