In the summer of 2016 I spent around three weeks in Italy. Combining my experience of that trip with other times I’ve visited Italy and considering the amount of time and money people will have to take a trip, I’ve cut my itinerary down to two weeks. In this post I’ll outline costs of food, commuting and excursions in Italy as well as giving a rough itinerary outline. Of course, everybody visits this incredible country for different reasons. I’m aware that some people may want to spend most of their time at the beach or shopping, but for me I wanted to cram as much as possible into my very short visit and at as low a cost as possible.

Whilst it/s often thought of as being one of the most expensive places on the continent, there are countless ways to travel Italy on a budget. Itinerary

Florence, 3 nights: If you’re a history or art lover, Florence will be a dream come true for you to visit. Although most of Italy is deeply steeped in history, the postage stamp size of Florence and the proximity of so many masterworks and artifacts is an incredible thing to experience. You can visit Brunelleschi’s Duomo, the Ufizzi Gallery, Piazzale Michelangelo, Orsanmichele, the Piazza della Signora and so many other incredible landmarks. Personally, I feel if you pack two days of seeing the sights in Florence then you could use your third day to either go on a wine tasting in Tuscany or take the train out to Pisa, but it’s entirely up to you.

Rome, 3 nights: You could spend weeks in Rome and not even begin to scratch the surface of the things to do and see. Of course, sights like the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and the Roman Forum are must sees, but they are just a stones throw from lesser known landmarks like the Altare della Patria and Piazza Michelangelo. The Vatican Museums and St Peter’s are also must sees, which are a ten minute walk from the river and the countless things to see along that. If you have the luxury of being close to Rome, visiting in small spurts is favorable to spending weeks upon a time there purely because of the crowds and waiting times for every single excursion.

Naples and the Amalfi Coast, 4 nights: Staying in Naples can cut your stay in this part of Italy in half if you don’t mind travelling to the different towns along the coast each day. From Naples you can easily reach Siena, Capri, Pompeii, Sorrento by train and take the bus to Positano and Amalfi. Whilst it’s not the most glamorous of the cities on this list, the food in Naples is beyond amazing and, in my opinion at least, is the best place to have pizza and pasta in the whole of Italy. Yeah I said it.

Venice, 2 nights: Like Florence, Venice is tiny and it’s easier to cover the entirety of the city in a day or two. It’s almost like walking through a maze, and once you begin exploring the streets it is wildly enrapturing.

Milan, 2 nights: If you’re a fan of fashion or modern art, Milan’s offerings will be of great interest to you. The immediate area around the Piazza del Duomo is a tourist haven and the flagship of some of the largest Italian luxury brands there are. Closer to the canal, there is a much younger that doesn’t seem as stifled as many of the other places I visited in Italy. Experimental restaurants, coffee bars and stores line the historical streets and the whole area made me feel like I was in Berlin rather than Milan.

Because of the time constraints I’ve placed on this post, there are many locations across the country that haven’t made this list. If you have the luxury of additional budget or time to spend, then I would also recommend visiting Sicily and Siena whilst you’re in the South, seeing Bologna while you’re in Tuscany and stopping in Verona when travelling between Venice and Milan.

Costs

Depending on where in the world you’re travelling to Italy from, flights will vary drastically. From the UK and elsewhere on the continent you can reach all of the major airports for under £100 each way, but if you’re flying from the US or Canada flights can cost from £600 return when flying direct. If you’re looking to travel on a budget, I would recommend booking flights in the winter and autumn months, not only because it knocks off some money on flight prices but also on hotels once you arrive in Italy. In the city center of popular tourist destinations – which, in Italy’s case, is pretty much everywhere – costs skyrocket. However, if you look even just a mile or two further out you can find the same quality of hotel for a fraction of the price. The extensive transport links between different cities also means that you can base yourself in a less expensive location and commute to others, for example staying in Naples and using it as a base to visit the Amalfi Coast, and. Food can be as expensive or inexpensive as you desire. Around have of the days on our trips we shopped at supermarkets, whether it be buying pasta and sauces to cook on the stove or the fixings for sandwiches. When you’re travelling long-term, eating out for every meal every day is simply not feasible for many, but if you’ve saved and have the budget there are copious options in all price brackets. Realistically, I would recommend budgeting around £30 per meal (lunch and dinner) per person if you’d like to eat out at reasonably priced restaurants, however if you’re on a really tight budget you can eat ramen and buy cokes and water and easily survive on £7-10 per day.

Getting Around

For getting around the country, you can either use private transfers, hire a car yourself or use public transportation. In all the times I’ve visited Italy, I used a taxi once to take me from my hotel in Florence to a train station slightly further outside of the city center, and otherwise I exclusively used public transport. The infrastructure of the system is easy to use, extremely well priced and can take you to and from the city or town centers of the majority of places in the whole country.

I’ve flown into both Rome and Milan, on both occasions I took coaches organized by companies on the other end to take you from the airport to the main train stations in each city. Tickets with Terravision start at €8 for adults or €5 for kids and can be purchased on the day instead of booking in advance for the same cost whilst axis from the airport in Rome to hotels in the city center center have a flat fee of €48.

I used Trenitalia to travel between Milan, Naples, Florence, Rome, Pisa and Venice and always booked my journeys in advance to save money. The best time to book trains is between 8-12 weeks before you take it, and be sure to take advantage of deals such as buy one ticket get one free if you’re travelling in a pair or group. A journey from Florence to Rome cost me around €25 one way, but the shorter trip from Milan to Florence was closer to €40. Around the Amalfi Coast you can hire a private transfer to take you to the smaller towns, but to get to Capri you’ll need to pay the €17 ferry fare each way. You can also take the Circumvesuviana – local train that literally means ‘around Vesuvius’ – to Sorrento and Pompeii, which costs €3 each way.

And more importantly, there is an increasing pressure on them to show the financial returns of their marketing efforts. Why? Because now, it’s all about providing results. Gone are the days when a digital ad campaign could be measured by the sheer number of site visitors or page views.

With top management in more and more organizations equating performance with ROI, you need to be able to show the value you create for every marketing penny spent. But that’s where the biggest challenge lies.

Problem 1: When you’re focused on the low-hanging fruit, you lose sight of the bigger picture

The result? When their CEOs ask — “How does X video shares or X number of ‘likes’ tie directly back into our sales?” — they struggle to quantify these numbers.  

That’s because unless you know how to nurture and convert the ‘likes’ and ‘shares’ into buyers, those numbers don’t really mean anything.

Problem 2: Without proof of work, you may fail to make a business case for your marketing initiatives

Consider this. The average cost per 1000 impressions on Google, Facebook or other digital channels falls anywhere between Rs.50-1500, depending on the industry and the nature of the business. That’s how much a company has to pay for 1000 Impressions on their digital ads.

With more businesses going digital, these numbers are going to rise even further in the coming days. No wonder, the stakes for marketers are higher than ever and there’s a mounting pressure on them to optimize campaign performance to win more customers.

Recently I challenged myself to visit all the “Plus Beaux Villages de France” — France’s most beautiful villages. Perhaps I should have done a bit more research before making such a statement. There are 156 official villages with the “Plus Beaux” distinction. Even though France is only the size of Texas, it’s a big place!

Now that I’m a bit more realistic about the “task” (albeit, a pleasure) it’s more feasible for me to do one region at a time.

There are 13 regions in France. The region where I’ve visited the most beaux villages in Aquitaine. It’s also where there are the most “official” Plus Beaux Villages in France — in Dordogne.

 Dordogne’s Plus Beaux Villages

Three years ago a hometown friend who I hadn’t seen in 40 years came to visit me in France. While here we entertained ourselves by driving from Uzès to Dordogne. Like typical tourists we focused on the area around the Dordogne river. The “classic” Dordogne: picturesque villages, medieval castles, limestone cliffs and caves with prehistoric drawings. The French call it “le Pèrigord.”

During our week-long tour we stopped at two of the most well known beaux villages in Dordogne — Domme and La Roque-Gageac. To learn about these villages read on here…

On the way back from my recent visit to the States, I intentionally stopped in Dordogne to see four of the beaux villages on my list: Beynac-et-Cazenac, Castlenaud-la-Chapelle, Monpazier, and St. Jean-de-Côle.

A Day in Beynac-et-Cazenac and Castlenaud-la-Chapelle

Because they’re so close together, you can visit both of these villages in a day. Admittedly, I lingered over lunch in Beynac so I didn’t see as much as I could have. But then, relaxing to enjoy your surroundings is part of the journey, too.

If you dream about France, like I do, you’ve seen Beynac-et-Cazenac in your dreams. It’s a fairytale French villages perched above the Dordogne river, complete with narrow cobblestone streets, storybook houses and a stately castle at the top. You would expect Cinderella and her prince to appear at any moment.

Like all Plus Beaux Villages de France, Beynac is tiny. The max population for beaux villages is 2000. In 2015 Beynac had 552 residents.

It takes only a few hours to walk around town and through the castle. If you’re driving you can find parking at several levels on the way up to the castle. It’s a pretty steep climb if you stop at the bottom and you only want to visit the castle.

I strongly advise you plan to spend enough time in Beynac to stroll the streets and enjoy the medieval architecture. There are not many places that are as original and as well maintained.

They say the castle, “Château de Beynac”, is the most authentic example of a feudal fortress in the Pèrigord. Towering above the river and valley, it is a reminder of legendary conquerors like King Richard “the Lionhearted” who walked this very courtyard and within the stone walls.  Likewise, it is a shrine to wars that raged through Dordogne for over nine centuries.

If you visit Beynac on I sunny day like I did, enjoy a lovely meal with a “to die for” view of the river at La Terrasse des Chateaux.

Castlenaud-la-Chapelle

Literally down the road from Beynac-et-Cazenac is the plus beaux village Castlenaud-la-Chapelle. The magnificent castle, Château de Castelnaud, soars above the Céou River valley as if to announce “Look at me!”

The proud castle, like its neighbor in Beynac, was the site of numerous wars and confrontations, including the Hundred Years War. It changed occupants between the French and the English seven times. During its history, the castle was burned to the ground, rebuilt, abandoned during the French Revolution, then used as a stone quarry. During WWII the fortress gave shelter to French resistance groups. Between 1974 and 2005 it was restored to its near-original state.

Today the castle is one of the most visited spots in Dordogne, especially by families with children. A museum features medieval weapons from all over Europe. In the village perigordine style houses with high-pitched roofs are tightly terraced along narrow streets.

When visiting Castlenaud-la-Chapelle there’s a large parking lot at the top. You can walk directly to the castle from there. That view alone will make your day!

An Introduction to Car Audio System Design, Stereo Imaging and Staging

In spite of some car audio shop rogers ar already have a good understanding of how sound will be produced, no technical manual should start without in the basics of its subject matter. Writers sometimes wrongly imagine the reader will already know quite a lot about the subject and so they neglect the basics. Because of this, some may find it difficult to understand the reasons pertaining to installing speakers in particular positions in the car, for example , or precisely why a woofer operates best in a particular size and sort of enclosure. Most people find it embarrassing to admit that they don't understand something which they assume everybody else knows. The truth is that there are almost certainly several other people in the same group who would like to ask a similar question. Here I will outline the basics of the subject and even briefly discuss how these basics apply to the world of mobile entertainment. It is not supposed to be a complete guide to sound because we no longer want to send you to sleep! If you would like to know more about sound and the guidelines of hi-fi sound reproduction, there are many good books about them. So what is sound? Sound is caused by the activity of air. If a large wooden panel is penis-shaped, the air next to it is pushed away. If the vibration is usually slow then the air just moves out of the way, but as the pace of vibration increases to between a few tens and several tens of thousands of excursions per second, the air cannot move out in the way fast enough and therefore compresses as the panel promotes it away. The air's natural elasticity comes into play. Typically the particles of air against the panel are pushed contrary to the next particles, which push against the next ones etc ., creating a 'pressure wave'. As the panel returns to their starting position, the air becomes less dense as it covers the void in front of the panel. The rate at which 'pressure waves' are produced is called the 'frequency' and is measured around 'cycles per second'. Instead of 'cycles per second' many of us usually describe frequency in terms of Hertz (1 cps sama dengan 1 Hz). Imagine a bath full of water. If you placed your hand in the water and move it slowly backward and forward, not much happens - the water simply slips around the isn't stable of your hand. But if you move your hand very fast, the water doesn't always have time to move out of the way and you create a wave within the bath. Soon the water is flowing over the edges on the bath and soaking the carpet. If you used a thing larger than your hand to move the water, such as a dinner plate, you may cause the water to overflow without moving your hand while fast as before. Air reacts in much the same technique. Big objects and small objects can generate force waves and therefore sound, but a small object must transfer quicker to cause the air in front of it (and regarding it) to be compressed. You are probably one step ahead of us by now, but this is why we find tiny tweeters and very significant woofers. All sizes of speakers can produce sound, and the logic behind why tweeters are small and woofers are big has very much to do with the size of the pressure wave they are trying to recreate and the weight and characteristics of the moving 'panel' aid which in the case of a speaker is usually a cone, a cupola or occasionally a flat diaphragm. To reproduce high frequencies, often the cone or dome needs to move very fast. The smaller together with lighter it is, the easier it is for the amplifier to control the idea. We'll come back to this later. First we need to understand a little bit more about sound itself. Pressure Waves Pressure waves of your sound travel at a fixed speed of around 1100 feet per second (actually, air temperature affects the complete speed but we don't need to worry too much about that). If we know the frequency (the number of waves per second), we can calculate the distance between corresponding points on effective waves - in other words, we can measure the length of a tide, or the 'wavelength'. A sound that has a frequency of 1100Hz carries a wavelength of one foot. A sound of 2200Hz will have some wavelength of six inches, and a sound with a rate of 550Hz will have a wavelength of two legs. The notes of the musical scale simply represent appears at certain frequencies. Middle A on a piano is definitely 440Hz for example (a wavelength of 2ft 6in). For a church pipe organ or electronic synthesiser, it can be possible to play an A which is four octaves below midst A. This has a very low main or 'fundamental' volume (additional frequencies or 'harmonics' will be added naturally, supplies each instrument its own individual tonal character) of 29. 5Hz, a wavelength of around 40 feet! With literally the other end of the scale, an A played a few octaves above middle A has a frequency of all-around 3500Hz and a wavelength of just 3. 75 inches wide. The size of the musical instrument (and loudspeaker) tends to suggest how big is the wavelength it's designed to produce. The soundboard of any piano and the large pipes of a church organ are able to producing large wavelengths, which means lower frequencies. Similarly, the 12-inch diameter subwoofer is designed to give low bass. When we ignore for a moment the mechanical limitations, there is nothing to halt a good 6 inch mid-woofer from reproducing very low eq. It can move at the required cycles per second, nevertheless size means that it can only displace a certain amount of air through each cycle. It may produce very low frequencies, but merely at very low output levels. This takes us back in the analogy of the hand and the dinner plate inside the bath full of water. The surface area of a 12-inch bass speaker is like a dinner plate, able to move enough surroundings in one cycle to produce a pressure wave capable of rattling the exact windows in the house across the road! Imaging and Phase... resulting in the illusion of reality When we install a hi-fi system in your own home or in the car, we are attempting to reproduce a very complex style of sound waves within an environment that is quite different on the one in which the instruments and vocals were recorded. We live trying to recreate not only the sounds of the various programs and singers accurately but also their positions on the 'sound stage'. This is often called 'imaging' or 'stage image'. It will also be described as 'staging', but in car audio this word is mostly used to describe the position of the stage itself (whether it's in front of the listeners or behind them), rather than the position with the performers on the stage. If we listened to and recorded requirements of a single flute in our living room, for example , and then replayed it via a single full-range speaker positioned in exactly the same position as the flautist, there is a good chance (if the recording tools and hi-fi system is of a good enough quality) that it will reasonable more or less identical. The reverberation characteristics of the room could be the same and, since we are using only one speaker as an alternative to trying to artificially recreate the position of the flautist in the room utilizing stereo techniques, the instrument should appear to be in the right place. If we had a complete orchestra in our living room as well as wanted to copy what we did with the single flute, we might need to use a multi-channel recorder, several channels of inordinacy and however many speakers it took, each arranged on exactly the right place for each instrument. Having witnessed this accomplished at a hi-fi show in Paris some years ago, I will tell you that it can sound very realistic. The problem is that it can be not currently feasible to do this in most homes, and never in a car, which is why we have... yep, good old stereo. Stereo audio aims to recreate the exact positions of the various instruments using only a single pair of loudspeakers, and it achieves this typically by increasing the level of a particular instrument in one of the channels in accordance with the other channel. Only the levels are different - the wavelengths from both the left and right channels will be equivalent in every other way. They are said to be 'in phase'. Therefore if you could somehow freeze the sound and see the wavelengths emanating from the two speakers, both wavelengths would be very well point in their cycle. When sound is recorded just for stereo reproduction, it is assumed that the listener will be positioned equidistant between the two loudspeakers. Of course this is rarely the case inside of a car, unless you happen to drive a McLaren F1. Many of us compensate for not being seated central to the loudspeakers by fine-tuning the balance control on the CD player, which increases the level level on one side relative to the other. This only adjusts the stereo image up to a point, because we are nonetheless physically closer to one speaker than the other, and shifting the balance control has no effect over the phase and moment of the signal reaching our ears. If we are being placed in the front of the car, close to the left-side speaker, then we will find out the sound from that speaker very slightly earlier than the sound in the speaker on the right, and from those speakers powering us. It is also likely that in the upper frequencies, where wavelengths are very short, the sound we hear through each of our left and right ears may be slightly 'out involving phase'. These timing and phase distortions confuse serotonin levels and can destroy the stereo effect. When this happens, you hear a lot of the sound is coming from the speaker closest to you, instead of from your imaginary stage across the windscreen - the stereo key fails to work. Our earlier analogy with water may help00 us to understand what is meant by sound being 'in phase' and 'out of phase'. Imagine that you start a delicate wave from one end of the bath. If you use both hands to get started on two waves at exactly the same time, the peaks of your waves will occur at exactly the same point and the lake could be said to be 'in phase'. Now start a gentle influx from the other end of the bath. What happens when the two dunes meet? Both waves clash and effectively cancel the other out. Now imagine speakers at the front and rear of an vehicle, each producing sound pressure waves. These mixture and create some very complex alterations to the sound. For the reason that pressure waves meet, the air may be pushed stronger from the same direction in which it was already travelling (so we have additions which can lead to peaks in the frequency response), or simply one pressure wave may compress against another exploring in the opposite direction. In the latter case, if the a pair of waves are identical in terms of frequency and pressure and are also exactly half a wavelength out of phase, they will cancel by themselves out completely, leaving silence. Usually the two sound habits are so complex that they will only partially cancel, but reasonably pure tones of long wavelengths and high pressure tend to noticeably cancel. The lower the frequencies being produced plus the more loudspeakers there are reproducing that range of frequencies, the more probable it is that phase cancellation will occur. If audio system are wired with the + and - terminals corrected on one speaker, the speakers are placed 180 degrees (half a wavelength) 'out of phase'. In theory they should end themselves out, but in practice the bass region will be afflicted most cancellation and the remainder of the sound becomes mixed up, with little or no central image. Speaker placement... for those without having a McLaren F1 By installing many speakers inside a motor vehicle, we create a very complex mix of pressure waves which will cause problems with the overall sound. This does not necessarily mean that it is a awful thing to install a large number of speakers. We may want to split the very frequency range into small portions - sub-bass, pike, mid-bass, midrange, upper midrange, high frequencies and ultra-high radio frequencies - so that each range has a pair of speakers devoted to it. Because of the limitations of loudspeakers, this might be a good option if we are looking for absolute sonic fidelity. Of course space within a vehicle is limited and so we tend to install fewer speakers, normally covering the sub-bass, mid-bass, midrange and upper frequencies. This will give good reproduction of the tonal qualities of the several instruments and voices but there are still the problems of cycle, 'time alignment' and 'off-axis' performance to consider. We should normally try to avoid reproducing the same frequencies from speakers positioned with different distances from the listeners. For example , if we have a set of two 6-inch speakers producing mid-bass at the front of the vehicle, we need to avoid having another pair of speakers reproducing exactly the same array of frequencies from the rear shelf. The colliding pressure surf will cause additions and subtractions, according to the phase of each trend, at the point where they meet. Frequency peaks and also troughs could be adjusted with a third-octave equaliser, and the right time to of the sound from each speaker could be adjusted employing a 'time alignment' digital signal processor, but there is no sensible way of compensating for the phase distortions. It is much more simple to avoid the problems from the start, as much as possible. When deciding where to location speakers, especially midrange and tweeters, try to install these people so that the left and right speakers of each matched couple are equidistant from the listeners. This is often very difficult to achieve naturally , but do the best you can. The footwell positions generally work well for midrange speakers and sometimes tweeters too. If you want to mount the tweeters higher, try if possible to support them in a position which is half the distance to the midrange phone speaker - there is some evidence to suggest that placing the mids and tweeters exactly 180 degrees apart can boost stereo imaging. Larger bass speakers can often be installed inside doors without too much affect on imaging, if you make certain that the crossover point is set so that their output is not going to overlap the frequency range of the midrange speakers excessive. The subwoofer, or subwoofers, usually have to be installed during the rear of the vehicle because of their size. Take care when choosing the main slope and setting the crossover point on the channel(s) feeding these speakers. With a 6dB per octave 'low-pass' filter (a filter which only passes frequencies listed below a certain 'crossover point') set to 100Hz, the output at 200Hz will only be 6dB lower, and since subwoofers tend to be influenced loud, the pressure waves created in the middle frequency place will probably be strong enough to interact with the speakers in the front of the vehicle. It is generally wise to choose a 12dB and also 18dB slope for subwoofers. Installing full-range speakers on the rear shelf, or in the rear doors, often piteuxs the stereo image at the front of the car because the similar sounds are coming from more than one source and this is unpleasant. If you need to install speakers here to provide 'rear ambience' or simply a 'double front stage' because you often carry passengers while in the rear seats, adjust the front/rear fader control about the CD player so that the front speakers are considerably more noticable than the rear speakers when listening from the driver's place. You may still find that the stereo imaging at the front of the car can be confused. If this is the case, it is worth experimenting by solving the +/- connections to all the full-range speakers for the rear, putting them 180 degrees 'out of phase' with those in the front. It may sound crazy nevertheless sometimes works well. Always ensure that you reverse the connections to both the speakers in a pair. In an ideal situation, all the audio at all the various frequencies should start out from exactly the same destination. A speaker system which attempts to provide this is often described as any 'single point source' because the various drive units are generally physically aligned so that, in theory at least, the sound will be 'in phase' and 'time aligned' across the entire frequency array. What usually occurs in a vehicle, however , is that speakers sit some way apart and at different angles relative to the motorist and passengers. A speaker that is pointed directly along at the listener is said to be 'on axis', while a speaker put in low down in the door next to the driver is called being 'off-axis'. A speaker's output characteristics alter introduced listened to 'off axis'. Its frequency response is influenced, and phase changes may also occur. It is important to know this kind of and experiment, where possible, by altering the hanging angle of the speaker to achieve the best results. Shake, Shake and... Why materials resonate One thing we want to avoid inside a car audio system is any panels (such as the metal energy of the vehicle itself) that resonate, that is, vibrate due to movement of air within the enclosed space of a auto. It's a bad thing because these panels will produce a noise of their own or, in the case of the walls of a bass enclosure, in the event that they're not rigid then we'll lose some of the electrical power and definition from the low frequencies. Musical instruments which often produce sound naturally (not electronically) do so by sometimes causing something to resonate - such as guitar along with piano strings or the skins and metallic surfaces on the drum kit etc . - or by directly transferring the air, as in the case of wind and brass assets. Every material has a particular 'resonant frequency' - this can be the frequency at which the material will vibrate or resonate almost all freely - and this, together with the size of the resonating thing and many other factors, contributes to the sound which an object will develop if it is sufficiently excited. Of course something very dense in addition to rigid like a brick is less likely to be made to resonate when compared to a guitar string or a thin piece of wood. Brick can be a much less efficient resonator than wood. Sometimes this can be valuable, especially when building a bass enclosure where we need the sides being very rigid and acoustically 'dead' so that it doesn't speak out loud, since this would add some of its own sonic character (or 'coloration') to the bass sound we are trying to reproduce. There is a good rule of thumb that whenever a headline is phrased as a question the answer is, “No.” This headline is no exception. You might not think this from reading a recent AP article titled: “A commuter’s dream: Entrepreneurs race to develop flying car.”

I am old enough now where I can say that I have been reading such headlines for literally decades. Since I was a nerdy teenage technophile I have been reading about, and dreaming about, flying cars. They are undeniably cool – one of the holy grails of future technology.  I still sometimes imagine myself rising above the congested roads during particularly bad traffic and flying to my destination unhindered.

The AP article, however, is an excellent example of the overhyped future technology trope. Often a dramatic new technology, like flying cars, requires that several different component technologies all work sufficiently so that the application is feasible. Skyscrapers could not be built until the elevator was invented. It didn’t matter if engineers had perfected ways of supporting really tall buildings if no one could get to the upper floors.

I have discussed this idea with batteries many times. A useful battery has to simultaneously have multiple properties: good energy density and capacity, stability, sufficiently rapid charge and discharge rates, many charge-discharge cycles, and be made of material that is not too expensive, heavy, rare, or toxic. There also has to be a way to economically mass produce them. Missing even one property can be a deal-killer.

After reading score of news items on battery technology, there is a very common theme. The articles will discuss a new battery “breakthrough” in breathless terms, because one of the necessary features was significantly improved – a battery that can last for millions of cycles, or that can be recharged in seconds. They gloss over, however, the fact that one or more of the other features are deadly – oh, but they have to be made out of platinum, or their capacity is tiny. This is usually coupled with the notion that all the researchers have to do now is fix the fatal flaw, and we will soon have these wonderful batteries. That, of course, is always the rub, and we never hear about these technologies again.

For this reason I am usually more excited about incremental advances to existing working technologies. I would take a 10% increase in existing lithium-ion batteries over the possibility of a battery with 10 times the capacity but a fatal flaw that scientists are sure to work out in 5-10 years (because they probably won’t).

What About Flying Cars?

Flying cars are a compelling idea because they would be massively useful (and fun). Just like we were never going to have skyscrapers without elevators, there is at least one dependent technology we need before flying cars will be feasible – a high energy-density fuel or battery.

In the last decade engineers have cracked the problem of making flying vehicles safe and stable – sufficiently safe for an average person to fly like driving a car. Computers are powerful enough and software programs robust enough to stabilize a vehicle with multiple small rotors. This is why drones are now ubiquitous.

Many of the articles I have read in the last decade or so are about this kind of breakthrough, engineering a flying car that is safe and stable. But that was never the main problem preventing a viable flying car, it has always been the energy source.

Material science is also important, constructing a very sturdy but light-frame vehicle. That, however, is related to the deeper problem of energy, a light vehicle requires less energy to lift. Incremental advances over the decades in terms of construction material has certainly helped, but will not solve the problem on its own. Cars still need to lift people.

The big problem is that the flying car needs to lift its own fuel. This gets into the rocket problem – the more fuel you carry to extend your range, the more fuel you have to carry to carry the extra fuel, and so on. This has always placed a severe range limit on such vehicles. (The same, by the way, is true of jet packs, that other promise of future technology.)

The AP article acknowledges (but glosses over) this problem:

Key for many of the designs will be the development of longer-lasting lightweight batteries. Currently available batteries could probably keep an air taxi aloft about 15 to 30 minutes before it would have to land, experts said. Depending on how fast the aircraft flies, that probably isn’t quite enough to transport passengers between nearby cities or across metropolitan areas, experts said.

All we need is that massive battery technology breakthrough we have also been promised. In fact, for a flying car the requirements are even more stringent, as weight is a critical factor.

There are other options instead of batteries, such as supercapacitors. They currently do not have the storage capacity to be useful, however. Some kind of fuel cell might work, but again we do not yet have a sufficient working technology.

Essentially flying cars exist, but have a very short range, and so are not useful. We don’t really need any further flying car breakthroughs, and there is nothing an engineer can do to solve the fundamental underlying problem. What we need is advanced mobile energy technology.

Therefore, if you are waiting for your flying car, you should pay more attention to battery, supercapacitor, or fuel cell technology news. I certainly hope we do have a breakthrough in this area, but I have also learned not to hold my breath. We probably won’t win the lottery, but we are making solid investments that are paying off incremental dividends.

Battery technology will slowly improve. Maybe in 40-50 years we will be at the point that we have an energy source that is light and dense enough to make a flying vehicle practical. By that time, however, the same battery technology will make electric cars very practical, with impressive ranges, and easy recharge. Self-driving cars may also solve the traffic problem. There simply may never be a window where a flying car is a practical solution for the average commuter.

Still, I can see flying cars having a niche as a sport or luxury vehicle. There may also be locations where roads are not practical that would benefit from flying cars. There may also be military and other niche applications.

It is simply too much more energy efficient to roll around than to fly for flying cars to ever compete with conventional cars for most applications.
