Psycho Analysis: Jareth

(WARNING! This analysis contains THE BABE!)

Many years ago I launched my official movie review series for obscure and cult movies, Michael After Midnight. As David Bowie’s death was fresh at the time, I decided to honor him by making the very first review that of one of his greatest cinematic performances. And now, to celebrate Psycho Analysis finally coming back from its nebulous hiatus, we’re gonna take a look at that performance.

Jareth the Goblin King, the ruler of the titular labyrinth and a tricky fairy who sets the plot in motion with the kidnapping of the little Toby after our main character Sarah wishes to be rid of him… He’s one of the most delightfully delicious 80s villains imaginable. But what exactly is there to him that makes him so appealing? Is it just the fact he’s played by a young, hot David Bowie? Or is there a little more to him than just that?

Motivation/Goals: Jareth’s motives operate on fae/dream logic most of the time. The way he acts, the way he goes about things, operates on a morality that is alien to you or I but likely seems fair and just to a being like him. Kidnapping a baby? Well, he was asked to do so! Sending poor Sarah on a gauntlet through the labyrinth? Well, it’s to test her mettle! Of course, over time he shifts gears a bit due to… falling in love with Sarah. Yeah. This grown-ass fairy is crushing on a teenage girl. It’s no wonder Robert Eggers is rumored to be remaking Labyrinth; considering his pedophilic stalker portrayal of Orlok that has somehow still managed to amass an army of horny fangirls, he’d be able to pull off a Jareth the likes of which we’ve never seen!

Performance: Sting. Prince. Mick Jagger. Michael Jackson. All these stars were considered for the role, and all of them could have brough something interesting to Jareth. We know from Dune that Sting looks good in ridiculous outfits, so he wouldn’t be opposed to baring his bulge; Mick Jagger was a solid actor, as can be surmised from the film Performance; Prince was some sort of fae being to begin with, meaning he wouldn’t have to try too hard to pull off the haughty egomania of Jareth; and MJ would have been able to bring the delightful joy of awkward implications in the future since the entire film is all about Jareth trying to get freaky with a kid and, well…

But with all that said, none of them could have delivered the kind of performance Bowie did. I think with him being such an utterly bizarre and unique performer for his time, he had the exact right persona to portray a fruity fairy king, and his sex god status certainly helped sell this as well. It’s genuinely hard to imagine any of those other guys being able to pull off the right amount of sensual allure and genuine menace Bowie is able to bring to nearly every scene. There’s a reason this is one of his definitive roles; it’s one of the best villain performances in all of 80s fantasy.

Final Fate: Sarah overcomes his labyrinth, and even though he’s David Bowie in the 80s and he’s sung a dozen villain songs, kidnapping a baby puts him beyond the pale for Sarah. After reciting her poem and finishing up with the reaffirmation that Jareth has no power over her, he seems to gracefully accept defeat and allow her to treutn home for a dance party ending with all of the friends she made along the way (and also the Fierys for some fucking reason). In the form of an owl, Jareth flies away from the window into the night. Yeah, I got no fucking clue.

I will say this: It’s actually rather admirable that, despite his god-like powers, his love for Sarah was genuine enough that after completely and fully rejecting him he was still enough of a man to let her go. I think a lot of guys could learn a thing or two from him.

Evilness: This is the most debatable facet of Jareth. Exactly how evil is he, anyway? He does kidnap a baby, sure, but it’s exactly what Sarah asked for. Whether you believe the movie is all just a dream or that it’s real and Jareth is a member of the Fair Folk, this logic is sound for beings of such illogical nature. But then you have the fact he’s openly falling in love with a prepubescent girl which is, uh… not a good look. There’s also his treatment of Hoggle, which is douchey even for a fairy. If you ask me, all of Jareth’s actions put him at a 5.5/10 in terms of evilness; he’s bordering on darker territory, but I’m willing to give a little bit of leeway since he’s playing by fae rules.

Best Scene: Do I really need to say it?

Best Quote: While of course the entirety of the song “Magic Dance” is fantastic, it’s the opening bit of the song that is one of the most quotable and iconic pieces of dialogue in the film. I’m sure you could guess the whole “You remind me of the babe” bit is my favorite quotation of his based on the gag at the start of this analysis.

Of course, there’s also his truly incredible quote where he channels his inner “balding principal turned underwear-themed superhero”: “Nothing, tra la la?”

Final Thoughts & Score: I fucking love Jareth. He’s easily one of my favorite villains of all time, and might even be one of the greatest characters Jim Henson ever created. No, I’m not kidding. The evil David Bowie fairy is on par with Kermit in my mind.

Of course, a lot of what makes me love him is Bowie’s charismatic portrayal. Just the way he enunciates things, the way he reads off the silly dialogue, his multiple songs, the way he plays with his balls (or at least the way he allowed the professional ball man to hold up his arm to play with the balls in such a way that it looked like Bowie did it). And it’s not just the charisma, sexual and otherwise, that makes this performance good; it’s the depth, his role as an anti-villainous trickster mentor who is maybe just trying to teach Sarah a lesson by putting her through the wringer in typical fairy fashion

Of course, there’s also his truly uncomfortable romantic desire for Sarah. It’s not really subtext, especially by the end, though it’s at least played subtly and doesn’t go into uncomfortable directions (Bowie apparently refused to kiss the 16 year old Connelly, which is pretty based). I think the thing here is that Bowie is just so fun and charismatic that it is incredibly easy to overlook Jareth being a creep… which is almost a commentary on how rock stars can get away with disturbing behavior due to their own charisma and talents. Obviously it’s not intentional, but it is an interesting way to look at things.

I think the thing with Jareth is that it’s really easy to just write him off as a villain popular due to being played by David Bowie and looking very sexy but—at least for me—I think a core part of his appeal is how much he leaves you to chew on. I mean, there are so many ways you can read him; he can be a stealth mentor teaching Srah a lesson, a genuine stalker with a crush who becomes sickly obsessed with a teenager, a rowdy jackass who just likes to torment Sarah for his amusement, some combination of all of the above… 10/10 is the only score I could give a character who is so fun, entertaining, and open to interpretation. He manages to have genuine style and charisma combined with utterly absurd, cheesy, and ridiculous fantasy camp... Jareth is truly a villain for the ages.

ok so first of all right off the bat i noticed the little fox on the bottom! but also above that is “A labyrinth of lost souls” (now i know this might be reaching but idk!) so i looked up “a labyrinth of lost souls” and immediately got a bunch of links talking about assassins creed! and i quickly read over one of the links and saw that there’s a ring involved?!?!? and i immediately thought of the ring that y/n got from her mother! but i also saw there’s another game called wizardry: labyrinth of lost souls! so that could also be what you’re talking about!!! idk if either of those are relevant but for now this is just a quick rundown of what i can gather right now!

ok next are the the little moons in the top corners with the woman sitting in them! idk what meaning you have behind them rn but what i got from them is the fact that they are not full moons and she’s sitting inside of them while it kids looks like the moon is curving into her in a way? like trying to reach to her? idk again just the vibe i’m getting! ALSO THERES STARS IN THE MOON!!! WOLFSTAR!!! not only are there stars in the moon but there’s a single star outside of the moon but also in it? with the woman! it almost looks like the woman is sitting inside the moon admiring the star!!! idk!

Tinny little fun fact so you don’t rack your brain over this one: Labyrinth of Souls was actually my second top option for naming Gilded Constellations, I wanted it to have a very David Bowie-esque vibe which is why Labyrinth (literally from the movie The Labyrinth, was just perfect, but I felt it was too corny (especially when the first iteration was Labyrinth of Hearts) that I went for Gilded Constellations instead.

Gilded being inspired by Golden Years from Bowie, and constellations because our babies are our moon and stars. In Spanish we have a word that’s “Astros” which roughly translates to “all the things in the sky” but there is no cool version of it in English so constellations it was in the end.

I hate to inform you that Atticus Finch and Max are, in fact, the same person. Before moving to Santa Carla, Max was hanging out in whereever the fuck that book took place. He was laying low after too many killings in a previous town, so he died his hair dark to throw people off his scent. Then he went on the run again and took the boys with him to California, letting his naturally light hair grow back in. So, when you said you hated Max, you were actually thirsting for him and his alter ego the entire time :p

Nancy Downs is magical. I remember when I first saw her, I was in awe of her raw power, of her rage, of her ruthlessness. She's just incredible, truly inspirational. She inspired me to buy my first spiked choker. I rewatched the movie recently and I still admire her so much.

Switching to your art I really like your first painting a lot. I love the splitting of the heads a lot. It's very trippy and cool. You have a lot of precision and control in your technique, it's very impressive. Especially in your Fallout propoganda (?) pieces. I was always very sloppy and messy when I painted. I don't really know what woodburning is but the piece looks pretty cool nonetheless.

Lets get Existential with the Goblin King

The Muppet reproduction discourse resulted in me making an offhand reference to why Jaereth the Goblin King isn't a potential origin for Muppets on Earth. Specifically, I stated that he is a rogue memetic construct, something that some people would wrongly call a tulpa (I say wrongly because apparently tulpa is an appropriated term that does not mean "idea that has become a real thing" in its original context).

WARNING: STUFF’S GONNA GET “GRANT MORRISON-Y”

The universe of Labyrinth resists literal reading because it dives head-on into being an emotional tale. As a child, Jaereth frightened me, because I was a savvy little kid when it came to tropes, but Jaeteth broke rules and did things for reasons I couldn't grok at the time, so he was a nightmare.

I begin with two initial suppostions 1) the Labyrinth and its creatures spring from Sarah’s imagination and 2) this does not mean that they aren’t real. 

Attempting to codify this beyond its fairytale/dream logic construction is, I believe a mistake, and its not necessary to the issue at hand, which is that Jaereth is a figment of Sarah’s imagination that has literally run away with her. Or at least her little brother.

Jaereth is a fantasy figure like all of Sarah’s other impediments and guides in the Labyrinth. I wager he’s one of the more recent ones, or he’s started to change recently, because this is a coming of age story, and he’s the foci of Sarah’s early explorations of adult fantasy themes. I mean, its David Bowie. Also the whole codpiece situation, and the dance scene, and so forth...

The story is very much about Sarah crossing the child-adult threshold but holding onto the ideals and wonder of childhood. The Labyrinth isn’t very subtle about this, as she’s punished every time she’s childish, but aided by the things that are childlike. This is a passing fantasy, one that Sarah will grow through experiencing, and one she’ll largely leave behind.

And that’s what Jaereth can’t abide, because he’s the figure in the dream that knows they’ll die when you wake up.

Jaereth has no actual power over Sarah (that’s the whole point), because he’s her creation, whether literal or figurative, internal reality or external reality, she’s the godhead from which everything he is flows, and unlike the rest of the toys and pets and scraps of poetry floating around in there, he knows what he is.

That’s the missing part of the puzzle that made him terrifying to my childhood self, his motivation. He’s putting on a show, making sure she keeps her focus on him. If he can make the boy into a goblin and take him forever, she’ll never be able to stop thinking about him and her impending adulthood won’t destroy him. It might even put the idea of him in other people’s heads, if your chosen take is more supernatural than fanciful. 

If she falls into this fantasy world with him, becomes his queen, more’s the better.

Even so, he can only use Sarah’s own power to accomplish these tasks. His control of his own actions might be incomplete, even marginal, and may be nothing more than the intrusive thoughts of a god who is unaware of their own status. He confesses this:

*Everything*! Everything that you wanted I have done. You asked that the child be taken. I took him. You cowered before me, I was frightening. I have reordered time. I have turned the world upside down, and I have done it all for *you*!

He conforms to her reactions, he does what she expects him to do. If he were a real thing invoked form the play she’s memorizing, you’d think the canon of that interpretation would give him some bulwark against her revisions, but whatever reality this runaway memeplex started in, she’s his reality now. Because try as he might, its not his story. 

He’s just the bad guy, one woven together from a puppet and a play and probably a sexy rock star, one given feelings and impulses and ambitions so that they can be thwarted on the heroine’s coming of age quest. But unlike the macabre-but-happy muppet-monsters that surround him, he’s got a human’s understanding of his nature, as he is made in their image. He’s a character that has a life of his own, and he has his own ideas about where to run.

Which sounds really familiar to me as a writer, and may be one of the most on-the-nose instances of “write what you know” I’ve seen.

He is, in essence, a Lucifer-figure, rebelling against his god out of fear of being replaced. A rebellion that lasts only until the authoress of the tale recognizes her own hand on the pen, remembers her own (at least situational) omnipotence, and ends the tale. 

I am not here stating that I believe that “it’s all a dream” is a correct or even good interpretation of the plot. For there to be any tension, Toby has to be in actual peril. And the exact nature of what caused the events isn’t really important. What is important is their purpose, which is providing Sarah with an externalized experience of her own internal struggle.

So, in short, as a limited rogue thought-form, Jaereth could not create the Muppets, nor ferry them from another reality to the one they share with human beings. He is not the demiurge of their reality.  

Sarah, maybe. But she doesn’t really seem like the demiurge type.

Stranger Things

Eddie Munson

You guys end up meeting at vet. Eddie had to bring in one of Dustin's cats, as a favor, and you just so happened to be there. He had absolutely no clue what to do because he did not grow up with animals in his household. You end you filling him in on the information and what to do just to have him bluntly tell you that you're gonna have to call Dustin because he didn't understand and just wouldn't be able to remember. The cat was fine it just had a little cold but also needed to be up to date on some shots it needed. You end up calling Dustin and fill him in only for him to try to hook you up with Eddie towards the end of the phone call. You didn't know Eddie but you knew Dustin from classes you had been in with him, even though you are a senior in high school. Dustin persuaded you into a least trying to get to know Eddie. You had seen him be considered the "freak" at school but you never though that he was one. You just didn't know him. Dustin told you that he was really into rock music, knew how to play the guitar, had his own DnD club called "HellFire", and that he also liked horror movies, just like you. You thought it was so bizarre that you had so much in common that you just had to meet him and you guys were made for each other. Eddie was extremely nervous and you ended up talking about your favorite things with each other. You guys ended up going on more dates and then started officially dating. As you were dating Eddie you joined "HellFire" and even made friends with his friends. You became family with them. You also just so happen to get to know Robin, Steve, Jonathan, and Nancy!

Story Summary: A story of how Bucky Barnes falls in love with oceans, stars, and the woman who gave him the reasons to.

Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Velika Dante King (Fem!OC)

Chapter Summary: Something has Velika on edge but she refuses to talk about it. She's looking for answers and takes the team with her.

The helicarrier touched down on the Arctic tundra, expertly maneuvered to land on the edge of the coast. The engines melted divets in the thick snow as they powered down. The water froze to create an icy sheen as soon as the engines shut off. The setting sun painted the land with soft pinks and oranges. It was still early enough in the winter season that the sun hadn't set for the few months to cover the tundra in a long night.

Velika pulled a heavy fur cloak around her shoulders, securing it at her neck. The bear fur would keep her warm even in the subzero temperatures when the sun was fully below the horizon. She tugged a pair of gloves on, tucking the ends into her jacket sleeves, and took a deep breath as the tailgate lowered to the edge of the ice. The cold air blew in immediately, swirling snow onto the landing.

"Christ, that's freezing!" Sam gasped, wrapping his arms around himself. He rubbed his arms quickly to generate some heat.

"We're above the Arctic circle, Wilson. Of course, it's freezing," Velika responded, starting down the ramp.

"So, what're we looking for?" Tony met her outside, hovering above the ground. "I'll do an air recon and see if I can find whatever it is."

"Ruins or a temple made of ice. If the temple is still standing, then the ice should look like it's holding galaxies and the aurora." Velika flicked her flashlight on and pulled her scarf up to cover her face.

"Got it. Magical ruins." Tony nodded and blasted off, heading north. He disappeared into the light of the sun, his armor blending in with the star.

"Don't make me carry you through the snow," Bucky teased, pulling the fabric mask up over his nose. "I am not doing that again."

"Serbia was different!" Velika shot him a glare. "The snow was three feet deep and I had two bullets in my leg." 

"She's got you there, man," Sam said through their coms. He was staying at the ship to track their GPS locations because he didn't like the cold. He refused to trek out into the frozen lands.

"No one asked you, Wilson," Bucky grumbled, tucking his chin into the collar of his jacket. He shoved his hands into his pockets despite wearing gloves. 

"At least someone's on my side." Velika shifted the fur cloak to block against the wind blowing from the east. "Once we get on the ice, the snow won't be so bad."

"Ground Control, this is Major Tom. I'm seeing nothing to the north. Gonna follow the coast down to the east before circling back to the west." Tony's voice made her sigh in frustration. Anxiety was already building in her chest. They had to find it.

"This is Ground Control to Major Tom. We copy." Velika took the lead toward the west. She squinted through the darkness, scanning her light from side to side. The ice flow was silent other than the howling wind and the conversation between them.

"Since when is he a Major named Tom?" Bucky asked, brow furrowed. 

"It's a David Bowie song. Come on, Barnes!" Sam sounded exasperated as he sighed.

"Who?"

"David Bowie was a musician from the sixties and made music pretty much until he died in twenty-sixteen. He acted in a few movies as well. Played the Goblin King in Labyrinth. Ground Control to Major Tom is a quote from his nineteen sixty-nine song Space Oddity," Velika explained absently, scanning the horizon for anything that might indicate they were heading in the right direction.

"See! Even Velika knows who Bowie is!" Sam's grin could be heard in his voice.

"Sam, my brother slept with the man back in the eighties. I had no idea who he was before that," Velika laughed, shaking her head. Sam sputtered in her ear in disbelief. 

Bucky smiled to himself, glancing behind them to make sure there wasn't any wildlife to threaten them. He hadn't heard her laugh in a while and it made him relieved. 

"East is clear. Heading west." Tony interrupted. Sam confirmed that he had him on the radar. 

"What do you expect to find out here?" Bucky asked, catching up with Velika. He lifted his shoulders to block the wind from whipping his face and squinted as a particularly strong gust blew past.

"Someone who can help." She responded, dropping her head. "I hope."

"She's really snippy today." Natasha mused as she poured herself a glass of milk. 

"I heard her on the phone the other day talking in a language I didn't recognize. She said her brother's name once or twice and kept running her hand through her hair like she does when she's stressed," Wanda tossed a piece of popcorn in her mouth. Her laptop was open in front of her and she had just paused the tv show she was watching.

"I don't know what's up with her. I asked and she shook her head and clammed up." Natasha wrinkled her nose up.

"Even Bucky has no idea what's bugging her," Steve sighed, looking up from Bucky's text message. The team's dynamic had been tense for a week after Velika's sudden personality shift. "He's tried to talk to her but she just shakes her head and walks away."

"I suggested that she needed to get laid or something but she just glared at me and left the room." Sam leaned against the counter, his arms folded across his chest.

"Guys, I need a favor." The woman in question suddenly swept into the kitchen with a notepad in her hand. 

"Oh, hi. You're chipper today," Sam shot her a smile and got a glare in return.

"Try me, Wilson." She growled. "I'll be in conference room B. Meet me in ten minutes." Velika left as suddenly as she arrived.

The room was silent for a beat before everyone glanced at each other with the same thought. Something was up.

"You want to do what now?" Tony asked, a brow arched.

"It sounds crazy, I know. But if there's even a chance that it's real, I need to find it. It's important." Velika had spent the last hour reading through her annotated version of an old legend about an ice temple that was home to Fate. She was sure she'd found the place it was describing.

"Well, I'm not doing anything this weekend so I'm game." Tony shrugged.

"I'll go as long as I get to stay in the helicarrier," Sam said. "I don't do cold."

"I'll go," Bucky, who had been silently worrying the inside of his lip the whole time, finally spoke. He looked up from the table and nodded once to double down on his statement.

"I only need three other people." Velika smiled for the first time in a week. Her eyes were alight with relief and her shoulders sank like a weight had been lifted off them.

"Let's get prepped, then."

"Velika, we've been out here for two hours. It's getting darker by the minute." Bucky called from a few paces behind her. His metal arm was starting to stiffen and twitch. "We need to head back to the helicarrier."

"It has to be here! We can't go back without finding it." She shouted back, eyes squinting to peer through the darkness. The wind had died down out of nowhere and the sky was completely clear of clouds. The stars did little to light the way and the moon was entirely in shadow.

"Velika!" Bucky grabbed her shoulder, stopping her in her tracks. "What's going on with you? The last week you've been moody and distant. Now we're searching through some barren and cold land for a legend."

"It doesn't matter. We just have to find it." Velika tried to pull away from him, but he held her in place. "Bucky, please. I have to find it." Her eyes glistened with tears and her voice faltered. "There's no other option."

Bucky furrowed his brow in concern. He opened his mouth to question her further when she suddenly let out a broken sob, tears spilling onto her windburned cheeks. "Velika?"

"It's the last chance any of us have. The only option to save us from war." She cried, wiping the tears from her face before they froze in the subzero temperature. "I don't wanna fight, Bucky. I don't wanna face them. Don't wanna risk being dragged back to be put under their control."

"I don't understand." Bucky stepped around her, ducking his head to look her in the eye. It was hard to see in such darkness.

"Rising tensions between Hell and Heaven means that war is closer than it's ever been." She hiccuped, her chest heaving as she tried to breathe. She had kept this breakdown at bay for so long but now that she was faced with the prospect that the expedition failed, everything fell apart. "Any attempt at peace with Heaven we've tried to make has failed and if I don't find this temple and talk to Fate..."

Bucky pulled her into a hug, holding her tightly. "Velika, I think it's just a legend. If we haven't found it by now, I don't think we'll find it at all. I'm sorry." 

She clutched at his jacket, shaking in his arms as she sobbed. His heart ached for her. When America had been on the verge of joining World War Two, he had been praying they wouldn't. But he knew they would in the back of his mind. "I don't wanna leave you guys. I don't wanna fight."

"I know. But you've done all you can and now all you can do is wait to see if war even breaks out." He soothed, rubbing her back. "And spend as much time as you can with the people you care about.

Bucky continued to hold her as she calmed down, whispering what he hoped were comforting words. War was a huge weight on anyone's shoulders. The fact she was trying desperately to find a peaceful solution to avoid it just to stay with them made his heart swell, but he felt that was selfish. 

Velika lifted her head after taking a steadying breath, eyes soft and expression vulnerable. Her lips parted slightly and she looked past his shoulder in wonder. "Look."

Bucky turned his head to follow her gaze. "Oh, wow."

The Northern Lights were dancing overhead in vibrant colors of green. Purple lined the top with a pale red barely flickering at the tips. They moved like waves in the ocean, lighting up the sky brighter than the stars. 

Velika drew in a shuddering gasp. A coil in her ribs made dread settle in the pit of her stomach. The lights were telling her something. The answer to her question. They were the temple she was looking for. "Two months." 

"What?" Bucky turned back to her with a questioning look. He hadn't quite heard her while he was distracted.

"Gorgeous." She said, louder, covering up her revelation.

"They are. Come on. Let's head back to the helicarrier. I'm starting to feel the cold." Bucky gave her a lopsided grin and took the flashlight from her hand. He started back toward where they had come from and she sighed sadly before starting after him.

Two months later, Velika received a letter announcing the death of her ex-commander and the birth of war.

What’s the first thing you notice about people? Well, I guess at first glance I see how they look, but behaviour-vise I tend to notice how aware they are of their surroundings

What’s your eye colour? You know that post telling hazel-eyed people to shut up? Brownish-green. Totally green if the lights are right. Totally brown when the lights are not right etc

Scary movie or happy ending? Both can be good, especially combined

oh god... probably high school? one of my friends and i convinced ourselves we could be a “band”. i knew like two chords and i can’t sing to save my life so as you can imagine it wasn’t a success at all. also i probably had a lowkey crush on her without really knowing/understanding it. it was pre the bi awakening so it was messy as hell. anyways, suffice to say i don’t play guitar.

hate: kids screaming or old elevators making that weird creaking sound

mmmmm. i don’t know? i’m not convinced they’re not real let’s say? and i find it hard to claim anything with certainty on that subject matter since none of us has died and knows what goes on/or not goes on after that.

i don’t know if ‘aliens’ as hollywood and science fiction stories have defined them exist, but i think considering the vastness of the universe it would be foolish and arrogant to claim earth is the only planet with any kind of life on it.

What was the last book you read?

right now i’m powering through ‘to all the boys i’ve loved before’ even though i’m not enjoying it very much. i loved the film so much but i’m finding the characters (esp. peter & josh) really less likeable in the novel. other than that, i recently read all the volumes of ‘fence’ that are out. it’s a comic written by the author of captive prince. i’ve also finished some comics inspired by the movie ‘labyrinth’. it’s a prequel of sorts. the story in itself isn’t groundbreaking, but the artwork is gorgeous and i’ve been a fan of the movie for so long it’s really nice to revisit that universe! the last proper novel i finished though was ‘peter darling’. it’s a retelling of peter pan ft. peter as a trans man and a mlm romance between peter and hook. the concept was brilliant, but i didn’t fall in love with the story the way i hoped. i think the romance was a bit too rushed for me, esp. considering it’s technically enemies to lovers. i’d still recommend it though for people interested in lgbt fantasy. ( i think i gave it 3/5 on goodreads?)

i.... don’t remember? i feel like i’ve never injured myself in a really intense way? i broke two toes when i was like.. five yo. and i’ve got a fucked up knee? but that’s hereditary not really an injury? i’ve burned myself a lot. i’m clumsy so i get a lot of small injuries, but i’m lucky because it’s never anything massive. 

Do you have any obsessions right now?

i always have obsessions! right now new obsessions include vampires and mont st. michel because i’ve been researching both for my novel. also period/slow burn romances. dover too since i just visited and fell in love with it!!! old but still current obsessions: david bowie, old english & one direction. also cats!! and boxer harry !!

1. What are 3 songs that mean something to you, and what do they mean?

that’s hard because i don’t usually find personal meanings in songs. i’m a lot more interested in what the song means to the artist who wrote it. but let’s see if i can think of some

-um. after all by david bowie was always Highly Relatable. like. prattling on & on waxing philosophical only to suddenly realize everything i said is wrong and don’t hate me and also now i’m having an existential crisis and i shouldn’t have started talking in the first place? M e

-when i was first getting into rush i was a big fan of Self Isolating To Cope and also i had no friends and was proud of it (bc if i couldn’t find a way to take pride in my [perceivedly] unchangeable flaws my entire self image would come crashing to the ground and that just wasn’t a good time . anyway). so the lines “nothing can survive in a vacuum / no one can exist all alone” from turn the page pissed me off. but now! now i have loads of friends and i feel legitimately cared about and i feel like i can comfortably reciprocate that and now when i hear that song i think you know what neil? you’re goddamn right.

-uh i s’pose i relate to another brick in the wall pt 3 which is not a good thing but. i dunno i really love being angrily in denial of needing any help whatsoever along to this song. it’s my flaw-pride anthem (don’t worry i don’t take it literally. it’s just fun in the moment)

-shit i know this said three but the one person who i relate to EVERY FUCKING SONG he’s ever put out is bill wurtz. never have i felt so understood than when i listen to bill wurtz’s music. god it’s the most uncanny feeling, i really really understand it a lot

2. What’s your ideal self like?

. this was The Worst question to ask me because i can and will ramble on for hours given the opportunity

well i’d be able to execute my ideas, for one. instead of just having a half-baked - quarter-baked - fleeting concept with no real idea of how to achieve it. more specifically i want to be able to write songs. more more specifically i want to be able to write the music aspect of songs. i can’t do it. i dont fuckin know why i just can’t. but if i could i think i just might be content with life.

but that doesn’t mean there aren’t still things to improve. i wish i was funnier. i like my weird brand of humor/abstractity online but that’s hard to replicate in real life. i wish i was better at thinking on the spot. i wish my memory didn’t only retain stuff when it feels like it. i wish i was better at putting my thoughts into words, more concisely and accurately and effectively.

um i wish i didnt have executive function issues. like i wanna just do stuff and not have it take all the energy out of me. wish i had the energy to do it to begin with. wish i could keep up with socializing and not ignore people for hours/days because i can’t get myself to maintain conversation.

ok clearly this is leading down an endless tunnel of what i’d change so . i’ll just say my ideal self is a successful musician with a good social life but also an element of mystery and intrigue. my ideal self is just david bowie

3. Who, of all your family members (immediate or extended), do you think has had the most influence on you, for better or for worse?

my mom for a lot (a looooooot) of reasons but if i go into it this is gonna push it over the line from a tag game into a therapy session (if i havent crossed that line already)

writing. journalling. fuckin , social media. actually yeah that more than anything. my Self is on display here if you look at my tumblr(s) my twitter(s) and my instagram(s) you’ve got a pretty goddamn decent picture of who i am

5. What was the first album you ever bought for yourself?

uh i mean i listen to most stuff off of youtube if i don’t already have it so like,,? i dunno. does itunes count? the first vinyl i ever got was wish you were here (for forty fuckin bucks god) but i paid with my aunt’s money so does that even count. i don’t know.

6. Do you like to go shopping?

depends on a lot of things. lately i’ve been in the mood to just get out of the damn house whenever possible (love being a high school dropout !) so the answer is pretty much yes anytime. but it really depends.

7. Kind of cliche but, if you could have dinner with any person, living or dead, who would you pick?

i wanna be the fourth person at the dinner with rush table. just to observe. i’d be terrified to actually have a conversation with any of my idols. okay but if i had to get over that fear i guess i’d pick..... bowie? todd? i don’t know this is hard. alex lifeson circa 197something so he can take me back to his place afterwards you pickin up what im puttin down

8. What TV show do you watch when you’re feeling stressed or low and you need a quick feel-better fix?

i don’t watch tv like ever not even in this case but i guess full house

everything my girlfriend said to me today (edit: yesterday but i did this last night) was great everything my girlfriend’s ever said to me was great

oh that didn’t answer the question at all i just realized. uh they were telling me about the star wars prequels (which i have not seen) and earlier we were having a very analytical conversation about a particularly interesting rush photo

also me & @swanky-trash were discussing our plans to take down trump and all the rest of those bastards while wearing jareth from labyrinth costumes and eating mushrooms. because it’s our destiny as clones separated at birth. yknow just life stuff

10. What’s something about yourself that you don’t think comes across as painfully obvious online, but is, in fact, in person?

shit are we at the end already? damn. i was enjoying this (can you tell).

okay here’s another one i could go on for 12 years about. but uh. i probably come across as way more perky irl? like my voice is all high pitched and i talk really fast and smile and laugh at everything and i have a whatever the opposite of monotone is voice. i don’t like that. i try to combat it online with the all-lowercase typing and shortening of words and omission of punctuation and that sort of thing. i think it’s worked. also i may be terrible at typing but i am WAY worse at speaking. i’m scatterbrained as hell and if i seem at all interesting or witty online that all goes to shit irl. also i can’t fucking talk to people who i only know in person? it just doesn’t work. thank god i have you guys
