These are actually such evil categories.
RPGs: Okay, this is a fine spread, of games called RPGs, ignoring that none of the games are actually about RPing, but that's fine it's what the genre is called
ARPGs: This is truly evil.... FF7R and DS in the same genre.... That is truly an evil thing you've done. That's like asking people what their favorite movie+tv genre is and one of the options has The Office and 2001 A Space Odyssey in it. Boy oh boy. Woof.
RPG Shooters: Okay. Kind of. Fallout isn't a shooter. I get the connection between the other two despite my strong hatred of one of them lol
Action Adventure: You don't think Dark Souls shares a category with LoZ??? I'm turning into the joker. They are fucking brothers.
Roguelikes: I don't play these so I have no take
FPS: Okay. FPS and Team Shooter are not the same genre. I'm sorry to do this to you Halo but Halo and CoD are in the same genre, with Apex, but Valorant, TF2, Overwatch. those are not FPSs. I love Overwatch and TF2 but I HATE CoD it's not even a game and it IS a genre difference. This one is more hair splitty though, admittedly
MOBA: Okay that's fair. I'll refrain from saying league sucks though. Oh. Fuck. sorry.
Simulation: I'm gonna cry. No Banished, no Surviving Mars, no Euro Truck Simulator, no Elite Dangerous, no Kerbal Space Program. Fucking Stardew Valley. How could you do this to me.
Metroidvania: I only know these exist because of one of my polatoms.
Horror: Most "horror" genre stuff is really just scary and not horror. This spread is pretty okay but come on where's Puppetcombo and Closing Shift. ... and go on, put Subnautica on the list too, the world won't change until the brave speak up.
Other: I can't believe you didn't give Disco Elysium a category that only has Disco Elysium in it.
Other 2: Wait where's racing games.

The Marauders Video Game Headcannons
Author’s note: I haven’t seen any headcannons of The Marauders playing Video Games so i created them myself. lol. I’m a gamer so i might have gotten a bit over the top. enjoy~
warnings: Screw the timeline!, personal opinion, meantion of death,
spoiler warning for Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons
Remus Lupin
Remus is the biggest gamer out of the bunch being a halfblood and such. He mostly likes to play puzzle games like Mirror's Edge, Ori and the Blind Forest, Ori and the Will of the Wisps and Celeste. Celeste specifically helped him deal better with his anxiety and coping with the fear of failure. He also likes co-op puzzle games like A Way Out, It Takes Two and Brothers a Tale of Two Sons.
Sirius Black
He, being a pureblood, was introduced to video games by Remus and quickly took a liking to the fast paced First person shooters like Halo, CoD, Overwatch, Apex Legends & Destiny 1 & 2. he is really good with a sniper but prefers close combat a bit more.
Sometimes he does crave a bit of a bigger challenge mostly to distract himself whenever he is going through a rough time. as luck would have it he found Souls games like Dark Souls 1, 2 & 3, Bloodborne, Sekiro: Shadows die twice
James Potter
James, just like Sirius, was introduced to video games when he befriended Remus. He took a strong liking to strategy games and claims it enhances his skills as a captain on the quidditch team. He plays games like Civilization, Age of Empires & The Fire Emblem series
The Marauders Playing Together
Remus and Sirius played Brothers: a Tale of Two Sons together, Remus as the younger brother and Sirius as the older brother. Close to the ending when the older brother passed away untimely and the little brother couldn’t save him, Remus and Sirius both cried so much.
Sirius cried because he could relate to the older brother as he was disowned by his family and thus felt like he was dead to them. It also made him understand what it must have felt like for Regulus being his little brother and symbolically burying his older brother and then being all alone.
Remus cried because he can’t imagine a life without his found brothers, his found family. Just the thought that one of them would leave him... it just tears his heart apart.
They all play Destiny 1 & 2 Together, Remus plays as the warlock class while Sirius plays as a Hunter and James as a Titan. They compliment each other very well while playing the game as Remus likes and honestly gets really excited over solving all the puzzles, especially when there is new DLC with new puzzles. James is good at leading and directing the team and Sirius being the long range support is good at giving call outs.
Bonus: Lilly Evans
LOVES MMORPGs like Final Fantasy XIV, Elder Scrolls Online and Black Desert.

4, 6, 18 for the video game asks :3
Video game asks for @billlybutcher 🥰
4.) Name a game that everyone else loved that you didn’t care for.
I'm going to lump them together here, but pretty much the entire genre of first person shooters. I'm not a competitive person, and would rather play a co-op game where you aren't going up against another team. Halo/COD are just not fun for me. Apex/Overwatch are the others I wish I enjoyed. The art is absolutely gorgeous, and some of the characters have really cool designs and backstories. I would kill for a game with those characters, but single player, or co-op play with a story mode (and all the costumes too!).
6.) Name two (or more) games that you think would make an amazing crossover series.
Animal Crossing and Pokemon would be a DAMN cute cross-over. I adore when other games/fandoms draw characters in the AC style, and Pokémon/Animal Crossing seem like they'd blend nicely. A little game where you're a pokemon and get to build a house, and design a town surrounding it? Or a human in a world of all pokemon? Actually might work pretty well 😍
18.) Name the first game you beat
Hmmm I think it was Pokémon Ruby (the original). I was eight, and got it, along with Sapphire and a blue Gameboy SP for Christmas. My parents created a freaking monster, and I don't think they realized it at the time. I also beat Kirby and the Amazing Mirror/Legend of Zelda Minish Cap fairly early on.
Thanks for asking! These were fun 🖤🖤

Top 5 Games of 2019
It was a little tricky to construct a top 5 for this year, though there have been a couple of surprises. I wasn’t expecting the year to be a bit crap as we are no w on the cusp once more of a new generation. But 2012 wasn’t all that bad of a year (PS4 and Xbox One would release in 2013) and at the moment, everyone is doing alright. PS4 has sold through over 100 million systems, Nintendo are definitely on an “on” generation with Switch, Xbox has been able to get back into peoples good books with things like Game Pass (on both Console and PC, their PC side they seem to really be turning around), there’s even interesting things happening in the mobile space with Apple Arcade.
This won’t be the last year where my top 5 games are full of current gen titles, I am expecting the new systems to drop in around November, last time it was hard to find a top 5 specific to PS4 (as I listed each platform separately back then). It IS however, another list of mostly AAA tier games. If you want to know what smaller more “interesting” games I have been playing, check out my honourable mentions at the end.
Also, follow me on Melee. It’s this new image blogging service from Imgur which you can download now on the IOS App Store (its just on iPhone at the moment) and it has seemingly been built to help people share gaming related clips and images off of places like Twitter and Instagram (and err, here on Tumblr). I posted a couple of daft clips of me failing in Modern Warfare and Destiny 2 and it didn’t take long for them to amass a few likes and comments.
That sounded like a sponsored advert but ain’t nobody paying me for this. Let’s get into my top 5
5. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order
I was about to select Gears 5 to be my number 5 until I saw sense and cast my memory back to when I started playing Jedi (all the way back in November. I was impressed by its intense action, impressive visuals and great characters. I especially enjoyed the 4 armed pilot who always complains. I did feel that towards the end I got sick of managing large groups of enemies so I dropped the difficulty to get through it, but I still haven’t achieved 100% of activities on all planets so I can still go back to it one day.
4. Borderlands 3
We all knew this was coming but not even I had any idea that we would have been actually playing it in 2019 way back at the start of the year. For me, I look at the game. I don’t care about weird magicians or their insane sounding legal woes, all I’m interested in is the work of a team who deserved better for their last title, but am still glad returned to what they do best, looting and shooting. I enjoyed rejoining these characters I have followed over the last 10 years, all the referenced to older games, cameos from characters from Tales From the Borderlands and The Pre Sequel and was sad to see some people go. I still have about a year of extra content to go through and I really appreciate the efforts they have made to make the game last longer than just one playthrough through in the Proving Grounds, Circle of Slaughter and Mayhem modes. Though I have always tended to stick to Borderlands games and create builds for each and every vault hunter, so I will be doing that.
3. Mortal Kombat 11
It’s been a while since I last put a fighting game into my end of year round up. And I HAVE fallen off MK11 a little bit, but this entry reminded me of how impressive it is for Nether Realms to pack their fighting games with some many things to do and keep people playing outside of just going into matchmaking and fighting others. The Vault this year is basically another little adventure full of exploration and puzzle solving and the Towers of Time give you plenty of challenge and direction of many months to come. You also have to give the developer credit for never backing down on the brutality of the game, they must have all got their heads together after DC Universe vs. and vowed never again to make watered down versions of Fatalities. It is a game that keeps getting better and better.
2. Call of Duty Modern Warfare
I was debating whether or not to include this years CoD. I always get the same type of enjoyment out of it each year, people complain that it never changes but I’m glad it sticks to a formula. Of course they are not identikit games, there are new maps, new modes, new ways of building your loadout and new touches, like how in this year you can snap to edges to stay in cover while you shoot, there’s the new special equipment system where you can drop ammo or reduce your footstep noise. Having doors you can either peek through or smash open adds another level of strategy, there have been times where I have been able to escape being under fire by closing a door, re-positioning and then wasting whoever just wanders in.
The campaign this year, good to see it back, but whatever, the co-op mode is Spec Ops again, like it was back in MW2 and 3 but on a much larger scale, I have yet to complete one of these btw. But as always, it’s the multiplayer that does it for me and Modern Warfare deserves credit for being what must be the first AAA game to feature cross platform play, not just launch with it. I know that games like Fortnite are popular, but I don’t see that as a AAA title, it doesn’t have the full package, it’s just a mode and it started off small. Call of Duty is expected to be big each year, has a lot riding on it and allowing for cross play is a big step. I especially appreciate being able to play with a keyboard and mouse on PS4 and being able to matchmake only with people playing with controllers on PC, in fact, I have never really given the game much of a shot on PC before as I know people just fall of it, there has often been low player numbers reported on the PC versions of CoD and it looks like it won’t have that problem this time round due to cross play.
Modern Warfare still has to contend with Destiny 2 and Overwatch for my time as my main multiplayer game but it’s still as fun as ever.
1. Control
Put this down as my main “surprise” game of 2019. A game which was not on my watch list, though I was aware of it as you can’t ignore a game from the makers of Max Payne (I did skip Alan Wake and didn’t care much for Quantum break though). Bought it at the last minute before its release, downloaded it and was wowed by the sinister nature of the environment you run around in. This weird fictitious US government agency which looks into paranormal activity which you seem to have become in charge of because you picked up a mysterious weapon from the deceased Director while searching for your brother. What then follows is about 12 hours of wacky powers and odd video clips as you unearth what has been going on in this strange ever morphing building.
I especially loved how the game never holds your hand too much, the map of each floor is vague enough that you also have to rely on in-game signposting to move around, as well as a bit of memory work. There is also great humour involved too in some of the PSA posters on a lot of the walls, the antics of the caretaker and the videos you find of Dr. Darling throughout the game.
I did have a few weird technical issues with the game throughout playing, but still found it to be visually pleasing, there was this weird hitch that used to appear after coming out of the pause screen that always threw me, it would be followed by a few moments of low performance before getting back into the smooth action. But this didn’t stop me from having a great time with Control. Perhaps the game that will be the most prominent in my head when I think of 2019.
So there you have it, control is my best game of 2019. But let’s look at the other new games I played throughout the year in my honourable mentions:
Gears 5
The Outer Worlds
Days Gone
Apex Legends
Far Cry New Dawn
Trover Saves the Universe
Concrete Genie
Devil May Cry 5
Tom Clancy's The Division 2
And also a special mention to these old games that were rereleased/remastered/repackaged etc in 2019:
Borderlands Game of the Year Edition Remastered
Halo Reach
And now, a look at the games I have on my watchlist for 2020:
Cyberpunk 2077
Last of Us Part 2
Ghost of Tsushima
Halo: Infinite
Watch Dogs Legion
Phantasy Star Online 2
Gods & Monsters
Doom Eternal
Overwatch 2
Diablo IV
Minecraft dungeons
Marvel's Avengers
Carrion
Streets of Rage 4
Will they all even come out? Let’s find out, happy new year!

Where to Start?
This morning I was wasting time in the xbox forums (it’s a long story) and found this question:
Best starting out shooter game: I do not do well with shooting games. What would be the best shooter game for someone starting out learning how to play those type of games?
It had been asked four days ago and there were already 17 pages of replies. No need for any further input here, right?
*glances at one reply*
“try fortnite”.
Something broke in my head. So here it is, my ~900 word response to the question that deserved an answer closer in length to “try fortnite”...
Hi There!
I absolutely can identify. It's difficult to get further into games for which we don't feel the "natural" skill with. Almost everyone starts out in a different game depending on what their friends play, what their siblings play, or how reliable their internet connection is, or dozens of other factors. After that initial time investment, some small victories can emerge that give the player the taste of success needed to put more time in and get better! With that in mind, its a good idea to choose a game that fits the criteria below to start with (not forever ;). After listing them, I'll put a few games at the end that I think fit well!
Find a game that...
isn’t complex and doesn’t have a steep learning curve: one thing at a time, and the first thing is shooting. Games like Overwatch, Apex Legends, Rainbow Six Seige, Black Ops 4, etc. have character abilities that a player needs to learn and incorporate into gameplay that prevent focusing on the fundamentals. This also goes for games with looting mechanics (most Battle Royales) and building mechanics. For all of these reasons, I recommend you avoid Fortnite Battle Royale while you learn shooters. The fundamentals of a shooter are aim, movement, gun management, map awareness, risk-taking, and positioning.
includes a campaign with difficulty choice: this allows the player to play the game at the pace they are ready for!
includes an option to play multiplayer playlists against AI/Bots: Playing against bots and gradually increasing their difficulty can allow the player to progress in a similar way to a campaign, but with the added bonus of having multiplayer rules involved like re-spawning in different locations,
has high fire-fight frequency: essentially, avoid games with massive maps that require you to hike a mile to get to the action if you don't want to be spawned right next to the enemy. There is also a significant risk of being sniped while you make your way to the action, which can be demoralizing and can cause player burn-out. For this reason I recommend you avoid the majority of the battlefield franchise.
isn’t camper-friendly: Sniping can be a really fun way to enjoy shooters after you're a veteran, but in the mean-time can deprive you of learning some of the fundamentals key to the classic 1v1 scenario. Some maps and game-types are more conducive to people just hunkering down in one place and only shooting people who cross their line of sight. Try to avoid these!
is first-person (at least when shooting): among the fundamentals, aim and gun management are greatly helped when the foreground animations contribute to the feedback you're getting from the game.
has low TTK (time to kill): the longer it takes to kill someone in a shooter game, the more the skill gap will have time to emerge. Dying quickly may not seem fun, but being able to kill quickly makes up for it with new players.
includes SBMM (skill-based matchmaking): this will likely be the most controversial point I make, but being put against opponents that are, for the most part, your skill level will greatly help you develop skills and confidence in shooters. SBMM is incorporated into the matchmaking code of almost every multiplayer game with the expressed purpose of making the game more friendly the new players (and to thereby increase the playerbase and make the studio money). This feature can frustrate the more skilled players because every game feels that much harder for them, but for newer players, it's your chance to get in the door.
has an easy-to-understand set of weapons: getting fancy with the weapon types by incorporating crossbows, flamethrowers, etc. can be fun, but getting a grasp of the fundamental weapon types (Assault Rifles, SMGs, LMGs, Snipers, Pistols, Launchers) can go a long way. This also goes for games that have weapon customization in-game as well as in-lobby. It’s one thing to swap optics in the create-a-class area in COD, and another to be doing it in Escape from Tarkov as you are still under enemy fire.
has easy-to-grasp on-screen feedback and interfaces: some games go SUPER minimalist in their HUDs (heads up displays), and this isn't ideal for someone learning. Escape from Tarkov and Counter Strike are good examples. Also important is the ability to interpret hit-markers, and those games along with Rainbow Six and PUBG often don't have hitmarkers. For veteran players, hitmarkers can do more harm than good if they linger on screen when your last few shots are missing, but for a beginner, it's key to develop your aim skill.
has easy-to-establish routes adjacent to the kill-boxes: the right habits are what can really take your play to the next level. Every map can be broken down to a simple set of routes. Some of these routes will kill whoever takes them, and some will give them the flanking angle on kill boxes. A great example is “Crash” in the COD franchise. Everything directly around the crashed helicopter is the “kill box”, the place where fire is coming from every direction. Adjacent are multiple buildings and alleys that can be played to optimize the exposed angles of the player.
Based on the criteria above, the following games should be avoided at first!
Rainbow Six Seige, Battlefield franchise, PUBG, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Overwatch, Escape from Tarkov (EFT), Counter Strike: Global ops (CS:GO).
And finally, I recommend the following games:
Call of Duty Franchise (excepting Black Ops 4). Best options are the modern warfare entries.
Halo Franchise (caution: different control scheme than many shooters, specifically for ADS (aiming down sight))
Battlefront II (2017)
Ghost Recon: Wildlands (this breaks the frequent fire-fight rule and the kinda breaks the first-person rule, but develops a strong sense of strategy and working under pressure)
Superhot (very non-traditional shooter, but a fun way to get used to pressure)
Titanfall franchise (these are for when you want to go intermediate. Very good games to learn movement and positioning strategies)
