The amazing Spider-Man would be a much better movie if, when Flash is trying to have a heart to heart with Peter because of Bens death, they kissed

Okay this post was originally going to be me talking about one of my favourite shots from Across The Spiderverse but it's just turned into an analysis of Gwen's Peter Parker + Peter Parker's in general, and specifically Gwen and her Peter's relationship.
Across The Spiderverse is a work of art and I just wanted to talk about one of my favourite shots from the entire movie (there's a lot, but this one in particular)
Tumblr media
This shot right here + the zoomed out one too a little later (but specifically the first one)
Tumblr media
I love how the lighting works in this scene. We know that Gwen's dimensional colour changes depending on her mood, but in this moment with the reds and blues working together it feels like it's establishing not only her Peter Parker, but all other Peter's from their dimensions too. The way those specific colours, the colour pallete of spiderman falls onto Peter and makes it look as though he's wearing a spiderman suit himself. It establishes how Peter Parker's have this hero demeanour. Even if Gwen's Peter Parker was the lizard, he himself wanted to be a hero even though he was powerless, like he says to Gwen.
Tumblr media
This is a dimension where Peter Parker exists but he's not in his traditional spiderman role, but he still holds those heroic traits to heart. He may have been given the line from his uncle Ben "With great power comes great responsibility" or he may not have said these words to him but believes in that phrase. I also believe Peter's uncle is alive during the events of the backstory, as in this shot there's a man on the right of the screen at the foreground, and we know the woman next to him is aunt May as we see her in a shot before and we also see Captain George Stacy walk past.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peter also heavily stands up for spiderwoman in this scene, I think specifically because he knows/ has a hunch that it is Gwen under the mask, as we later learn he knows during his death. Throughout the backstory montage Gwen also talks about this idea of them not knowing her, but also her not really knowing Peter.
Tumblr media
However, through the backstory we get the idea that Peter is trying to cross that bridge to understand her more, to get to know her. He's trying and trying to open himself to her to allow for her to tell him she's spiderwoman like he knows, but when it eventually comes to his death she still keeps the secret, she doesn't let Peter get to the other end of the bridge. Which eventually leads to Gwen's emotional breakdown, bottling up her feelings and seeking validation from anyone she can. Then Into The Spiderverse happens.
Tumblr media
And throughout the film, there are countless mentions to how she doesn't do friends anymore because of what happened to her Peter.
Speaking of her Peter, let's quickly talk about earth 1610's Peter. In this dimension he is blonde, contrasting other Peter Parker's like Andrew Garfield's, Toby Maguire's, Tom Holland's, even Peter B Parker's in this film. As we learn in Into the Spiderverse, Gwen is thrown in a week in the past, before the collider is turned on
Tumblr media
Notice how she sees the footage of Spider-Man rescuing people from said earthquakes when we also see the same thing later. She and all the other spider people eventually see the announcement on the news that Peter Parker/Spiderman is dead. And what's shown on the news feed during this moment?
They show a photo of Spiderman and Peter Parker. Gwen would have seen this most likely, as we know Peter B Parker did. So her line later to Peter B Parker about MJ makes a lot more sense
Tumblr media
She likely saw the news and suddenly felt overwhelmed as she recognised this Peter. Yes it's not her Peter, and a much older Peter, but she'd still most likely see her Peter in this Peter's face. She was in the same place Peter B was in this moment, she suddenly felt all these emotions he feels.
In a way, Gwen's Peter is like a ghost. He stays with her, being the reason she bottles her emotions and keeps herself restricted from everyone around her, pushing away likely friends until Miles. His death pushes Gwen into using work to get by, using her spiderwoman title to hide the pain that was her losing her best friend. We see her slowly open up in Across the Spiderverse, which are the reasons she acts like she does in the film, she never meant to hurt Miles, she just wanted the validation she so desired that she used to get from her Peter, and she found it in the spider society.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
Tumblr media
New week New movie, for this week's movie i'm quite excited to share my opinions on SpiderMans No Way Home. This movie is a cinematic masterpiece. Now Tom Holland isnt my favorite spiderman. Personally I enjoyed Toby Maguire's spiderman more. I grew up with two older brothers so watching Barbie and doing girly things was never something I did. However one thing that we always watched in our van that had a screen was Toby Mguire 3 spiderman films.
Tumblr media
However my opinion on my favorite spider man doesn’t matter because every spiderman is in this film. And I think that hit home for everyone. In this film we all were young again watching spiderman. I am a really big marvel girl and have been following along for years. So to see the multiverse that marvel has to offer start to overlap is such an exciting thing to see. Especially when thinking about all the possibilities. I love that this film gave Tom Holland's Parker some nostalgic moments that we all know but in their own way like when his aunt dies instead of his uncle or when Mj was falling. Another nostalgic moment was when we got to see all the villains and all the spideys fighting together to stop these villains. I also like how this movie was a redemption arc for the villains even though they couldn't stop their true nature. In the end though we all come to the realization that Peter Parker is just a kid handling all these responsibilities and always puts everyone before himself. If you are a Dr.Strang fan like I am you will enjoy the role he has in this movie. I know he isn't a main character but without him and the time stone we wouldn't even have access to the multiverse. Personally I think this movie is a 5 out of 5 stars. It made a lot of us feel young again which not a lot of things do anymore. Not to mention it's definitely a movie I think Stan Lee would be proud of. This movie pushes the boundaries of the multiverse concept in the MCU. It's an emotional journey that leaves a lasting impact, making it not only one of the best Spider-Man films but a standout entry in the superhero genre as a whole.

what started ur obsession with spiderman? Mine was the og movies tbh and then TASM like 😍
i love anything spiderman related omg yay.
so i’ve always been into marvel/superhero movies, i watched the toby maguire movies when i was rlly young (which i have very vague memories around) bc my parents loved them and then i watched the TASM movies when when they first came out (i remember convincing my parents to get the DVD’s and rewatching the first one so many times, it’ll always be my favourite). but at that point i wouldn’t say i was ‘obsessed’ yet, i just rlly enjoyed the movies as someone would normally appreciate media they liked.
but then a couple years ago (3-4) i rewatched the TASM movies and something just clicked inside me (idk if this makes sense??). following that rewatch i was rlly into spiderman. i consumed as much spiderman content as i cld, i got posters, i started buying merch and i read a lot of fanfic too 😭. so it rlly started with andrew garfield’s spidey and the TASM movies.
then when nwh was coming out, my hyperfixation peaked. i was obsessed (even that is an understatement, its more like my being was literally wholly consumed) with spiderman - to a level that it was a defining trait of mine, every single person in my life knew (family, friends, even teachers 😭) - and i wld always get spiderman related gifts and etc. that was the strongest my obsession has ever been and i think after that point was when i truly got involved in the fandoms too - i wasn’t just being interested in spiderman as a ‘hobby’, i guess.
i’ve always resonated with peter parker though, even though we’re very different irl (obviously) i feel like i truly understand him and the nuances of his character a lot. alongside that peter parker is just my exact type of men (im not joking. at all. i could not even tell you how many guys i dated/crushed on who were basically peter parker if he didn’t have powers).
regardless of peter though, i also rlly love most of the character in the mcu spiderman franchise. namely mj watson, i can definitely relate to her character and seeing her being adored and praised across the entire fandom even though she’s a very standoffish character at times rlly makes me happy - bc a lot of her less likeable traits i see in myself. AND last not definitely not least, spideychelle is my favourite ship in any media in all contexts. i love them together so much and i’ve read so many earth-shattering (im not even joking they changed my perception of love) spideychelle fics that it would be stupid not to include them in this.

SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME SPOILER AHEAD!!!!! READ IT AT YOUR OWN RISK
MY THOUGHTS ON CERTAIN SPIDERMAN SCENES
SPIDERMAN NO WAY HOME SPOILER AHEAD!!!!! READ IT AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!!!
Tumblr media
.
.
.
CAN WE JUST APPRECIATE TOBY MAGUIRE WHO WAS A DAD TO ANDREW GARFIELD WHEN HE SAYS THAT HE'S LAME COMPARED TO OTHER SPIDER MANS.....
Toby to Andrew " You are not lame "<3333333
.
also i just realised .....
Toby is in his forties ( after the vents in spiderman)
Andrew is in his mid-twenties ( according to events of The Spiderman Man)
and Tom is like in his early twenties ( including blip years)
THIS FEELS LIKE A MENTOR-MENTEE INTERACTION!!
I think I m gonna cry...
.
.
.
.
.
.
Also, Andrew Garfield's body language while saving MJ and his expression after he saves her>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
I feel like now Andrew's spiderman got a deja vu of what happened to Gwen and he saw how important MJ is for Tom...
Also, him saving MJ means that he can finally move on from the guilt of not being able to save Gwen.
.
.
.
I am going to cry again bye:(((((((((

i just watched spiderman no way home and im like what the fuck, no one said this would be a huge punch in the feels, like me and my sister are literally crying at 5am, the movie was fucking painful, i felt so bad for peter like he was so lonely at the end, I DID NOT EXPECT AUNT MAY TO DIE, YOU GUYS WTF
I DID NOT EXPECT EITHER FOR EVERYONE FORGETTING WHO PETER WAS, LIKE NO WAY THEY JUST PULLED THAT SHIT, IT'S LIKE THOSE FANFICS
also im in love with the peters' brotherhood, they were literally the best part of the movie ughh, andrew garfield i am sincerely so fucking sorry i trashed your spiderman, you're awesome, pls their redemptions were everything, tom holland during the punching scene was so great, he looked so pained and angered, it was extremely genuine, i love him, toby maguire's entrance made me jump out of my chair, i love his portrayal and him stopping spiderman 2 with just a look, no words felt so powerful, i was so completely shocked when he just got stabbed, and their whole interaction in fighting their villains, andrew saying i want to fight a villain was so fucking hilarious
me and my sister were failing so hard when we guessed which was spiderman 1, 2 and 3
no way did dr strange lose to a 17 year old child for a box, like why do they keep doing my boy dirty, dude literally took on a purple grape, im still mad at how MoM treated him, ig i do agree how his powers are adjusted to the plot
watching the scene where mj and peter say goodbye and then meeting after the spell like the song wildest dreams fits their relationship i cant
i really didn't expect the mcu to go through with the spiderman titles having a home in it, but it's actually very symbolic, the great power comes with great responsibility basically embodies no way home or just the home trilogy and i think it's beautiful

Spider-Man: No Way Home Initial Thoughts
Just got back from NWH. I might do something more in depth at some point but for now my initial thoughts are this.
I have not yet considered how well this holds up as a movie unto itself or just like in terms of good writing.
This is PURELY about how much I personally enjoyed/didn’t enjoy it.
Tl:dr: There was for sure room for improvement and missed opportunities. A lot of the problems of MCU Spider-Man persist. But... the good stuff overwhelmingly made the movie enjoyable for me. This is an instance where the fan service was SO good it drowned out all else.
Possible spoilers below the cut
Bruh... Dafoe... he fucking ROCKED this!
I was dead ass sure Doc Ock was going to take the spotlight as the villain of this film. Or at least share it with Norman. I figured, between SM2 being the most acclaimed/beloved of the pre-MCU movies and the common critiques the so called ‘Power Rangers’ Goblin suit got, Otto was perceived as a superior villain to Norman and would thus take precedence.
NOPE!
There is no ifs, buts or maybes here that Stormin’ Norman was THE villain of this movie.
And he was bad ass as FUCK bro!
I am overwhelming happy that in the MCU, Spider-Man not only got to fight his arch nemesis, but didn’t do it under some kind of technicality bullshit.
They had a proper full on fight and it was a giddam grudge match. I mean guys you have to understand, Holland’s Spidey seriously got his as handed to him by Norman here. It was by far the most brutal fight MCU Spider-Man has ever participated in and from a certain POV it was maybe the best fight. It lacked the pomp and spectacle of the train fight in SM2, Times Square in ASM2 or even the Mysterio illusions of FFH, but fuck dude... the emotion, the tension the ferocity involved here. They knew they had to SELL this and they fucking did!
Norman was somehow more sympathetic than in SM1 and the Goblin was at least as equally evil and demonic.
Doc Ock, had a beautiful pay off to his journey in Spider-Man 2 (so long as you presume that this movie creates divergent timelines with happy endings for the villains and doesn’t outright erase the old movies).
Electro was fixed in almost every single way from the mistake that was ASM2.
Lizard didn’t do much, but what he did do had significance.
Sandman... okay, Sandman was kind of let down by this movie if I am honest, but it was still cool to see him.
Andrew... Guys let me explain. In the UK where I live, outside of comedies or funny moments, we do not make noise in our cinemas. We just don’t. We do not clap or cheer or anything. But my theatre did when Andrew showed up and when he saved MJ!
And they cheered louder when Toby emerged!
Toby didn’t have much of an arc because, let’s be honest, he already had his arc in his trilogy. But they also neither cucked him, said he and Mj broke up nor killed him, which is what I expected. I was so happy he lived.
And bro... seeing them all together.... what a Christmas treat!
In a way this was Civil War+OMD done right, predominantly because the sacrifice led to a PROGRESSION not a REGRESSION!
P.S. Holland with more years of experience and a high tech suit gets his ass beat by Norman mano-a-mano.... I think this confirms Maguire was the most powerful Spider-Man!

ROTT vs No Way Home
After seeing No Way Home yesterday, I left the cinema with a bittersweet feeling. It’s a good movie, it’s a good Spiderman movie, but there were some elements strangely similar to ROTT. I’m sure I was the only one in the whole cinema that has seen both movies and the parallels, but overall it was just distracting. I’m going to compare several scenes and themes and other scenes that helped Spiderman’s story. Spoilers ahead:
-Peter vs Jim: Peter (the main one) had a slow breakdown until he forced the situation and visited Strange. He then tries to save everyone and loses Aunt May, what causes him to have a bigger breakdown. This pivotal point is were he stops and listens and even though he lets his rage slip, he manages to do the sacrifice so at least his friends can have the lives they deserve. Forgetting him only erases their relationships, but none of their talents (Ned is still a wizard, for example) nor development and Peter is still Spiderman because he knows that’s who he is, that he’ll be fighting his whole life for justice and helping others.
-Strange vs Douxie: Both acknowledge the problems that kind of spell could do. Strange is an adult that has seen and do terrible things and he’s not afraid of standing up to Peter and make him understand how dangerous is to play with time. He ends up literally doing what Peter asks him to do in the first part and kind of saves the whole multiverse from destruction.
-Portal use: Ned discovers he can make portals, so of course I have to compare that to the minimal number of portals Claire did in the movie, saying she was “spent” a lot of times. The portals here have a creative use in battle too, but also serve to find allies.
-The deaths: The only important death is not forced and is given the treatment it deserves. Peter has to learn he can’t save everybody and he’s given time to mourn and seek revenge and continue with his life. Both Ned and MJ almost die but are saved at the last minute. Thanks to Ned’s development and who saves MJ, the story still works.
-The interrogation scene: While it was done better in ROTT (yay?), we see all the characters behaving like they should. There’s minimal comedy and it’s not forced.
-The train fight: Both are equally good.
-Ned vs Toby: Ned gave me huge Toby vibes and even though he’s the sidekick and have some jokes, none of them were of bad taste. We saw Toby screwing up and complaining all the time just to die like a hero and then have a destiny that wasn’t his shoved in his hands.
-The reunion: There was something sweet and intriguing in the cafe scene. Pauses, looks, the feeling something is odd. I don’t like Peter and MJ as much as I like Jlaire, but life went on and Peter was happy for MJ and Ned and knows it’s going to take some time, but he’ll try to reconnect with them and, who knows, talk again to Strange to see if at least they can recover their memories.
-The sacrifice: For Peter, the world is coming to an end. They have fight and win, but doing the right thing is causing the whole universe to collapse. He knows he can’t change Strange’s spell. He says goodbye and they wait together. He knows he won’t get Aunt May back and he’ll lose his most meaningful relationships. But he does that for the good of all. Compare that to winning and just having to deal with some deaths. And here’s where Garfield’s Peter comes in. He had to dealt with Gwen’s death. He was in a dark place. But he’s still Spiderman, he’s still fighting.
-The little things: Not only the main character’s stories ended giving us a feeling of hope. I would never have thought that having Maguire’s and Garfield’s Spidermans would also mean finishing their stories. We learn that Maguire’s Spiderman is happy with Mary Jane. We learn that Garfield’s Spiderman went through a dark phase and then he had the chance to save MJ. Every character, each one of them, had a chance to shine. Even the villains. It’s hard to do a movie with several villains, look at what happened to Amazing Spiderman 2, but while it’s hard, it’s doable.
-The future: Life goes on. We see Peter’s plans. He’s going to live on his own. We don’t know if he’ll leave his friends for a while or not but we somehow know he’ll be alright. He’ll be Spiderman. He’ll do what he always do. And that’s enough to make you feel good towards that ending.
PS: But seriously, how did they managed to coincide that much?
EDIT: Adding a new one after some days.
-Hope: Another part of why the ending feels hopeful it’s because we know that of course there’s going to be more. Marvel movies aren’t going to stop coming, so we could learn soon what will happen to Peter Parker. We won’t have a full Spiderman movie for some years, but he can appear in other movies, even indirectly! Sadly, that’s not the case with TOA, at least by now. They’ve left us in the dark, in the uncertainty, in the bitter part of that bittersweet ending. And that’s why it hurts so much.

Okay!! I've now watched Spider Man with Toby Maguire, The Amazing Spider Man with Andrew Garfield and Spider Man Homecoming with Tom Holland
Overall I think I have to put my rankings at
3. Spiderman (2002). Its good but I just liked the others more
2. Spiderman Homecoming (2017). Very flawed as a spiderman movie but so fun to watch
1. The Amazing Spider-man (2012). All round great, lots of funny moments, great characterisation, decent action and sfx, and made me cry at least twice.
Some more comparisons under the cut
Comparing the spider men
In terms of generally just being a good spiderman, I rank Andrew Garfield's as the best, and Tom Holland's as the worst. As much as I love him, half the time tom hollands spidey seemed to cause more damage than he stopped, and he was far too eager to move onto bigger, "more important" things than defending his home
In terms of coolness as spiderman, Tom Holland comes last again. The fact he didn't jump off any really high buildings just for funsies is a tragedy. Andrew Garfield comes first, that handstand into the fall off the building was epic.
In terms of who was the biggest fucking nerd, Toby Maguires spiderman wins. They really sold the "absolute least popular guy in school" vibe. Tom Holland comes last again for this, he was a nerd but he was like, a socially acceptable nerd
Tom Holland's spiderman did the best at giving you the feeling he was just a kid, who was a little in over his head. I felt very protective of him through the movie, and the times when he missed out on school events bc he had other responsibilities was both heartbreaking and relatable
Comparing Aunt Mays and Uncle Bens
Out of the aunt mays, 2012 aunt may was my absolute favourite. Her bond with Peter was so good, despite not being his birth mother you can tell that he's a son to her, and vice versa. I love this one scene where its like. You can tell she knows, but she doesn't say anything. And the next time Peter comes home bloody and bruised, and with the damn eggs she just hugs him so tight like she doesnt want to let go.
I think 2017 aunt may was the hottest and funniest but she just didn't give the same emotional depth as 2012 aunt may, and I feel like we didnt see enough of her relationship with Peter. 2002 Aunt May was good but I didnt feel like anything particularly stood out with her, you could tell she really loved Peter though.
With Uncle Ben i obviously can't compare from the 2017 movie, because he wasn't in it. Out of the other two, I once again preferred 2012 uncle Ben, I dont know what it is but he just felt more like a loveable father figure, and I felt much more emotional when he died than I did when 2002 uncle Ben died. And that voicemail he left for peter made me cry again
Comparing love interests
Hard to compare because they're all completely different people. They all had really good characters but I think Gwen Stacy has to be my favourite. I feel like Gwen had the most character, and Liz had the least. I did like MJs (2002) character and story as well but idk, I just liked Gwen more. I think MJ just felt a bit like a damsel in distress at times. And Liz doesn't really have much character aside from generic high school love interest, I still liked her but I dont have particularly strong feelings about her
MJ (2017) doesn't become a love interest until the sequel but I figured I can compare the MJs too. Actually no I cant, I like them both equally. Again though, I feel like 2002 MJ actually had a story, whereas we didnt really know much about 2017 MJ
Comparing the friends
I dont recall Andrew Garfields spiderman really having any friends except Gwen so I'll leave him out of this. (I know Harry is in the sequel but ive not watched it yet)
Out of Harry and Ned, i think I actually prefer Ned. He just seems more fun to me, Harry seemed like a bit of a dick at times, which I dont mind too much but it still puts him below Ned in my mind
Comparing the movies generally
Over all I found the 2012 movie to be the best over all, it was really cool and exciting, really funny, super emotional. I just loved it a lot
I do think that 2017 spiderman was the funniest, all the films had points where I was laughing, but it definitely felt like there was more in Homecoming. In general Homecoming just felt very much like a "feel good" film, where as 2012 was a pure emotion rollercoaster, and I felt like 2002 leaned the most into the typical action genre.
--
Okay! I think that's all I have to say for now, I might come back and add more later if i think of anything

I might've missed it on accident, but have you sorted Spiderman before? If not, whats your thoughts? Personally I see him as a Snake-Bird who, upon failing one of His, strongly attaches to the moral code Uncle Ben gave him.
Honestly, I find sorting superheros to be borderline impossible, just because there are SO many versions written by SO many different people. I have zero doubt you could write a Snake Bird Peter Parker (especially if you wanted to really focus on his relationship with MJ) Personally, I like seeing him as a Double Bird - an *almost* supervillain who went good. I think the Toby Maguire Spiderman is very explicitly that. It's not that he's loyal to Uncle Ben, so much as Uncle Ben's death (killed by a robber Peter could have stopped) proves that particular philosophy correct.
I write about Peter a bit here, in the context of Bird vs Lion morality, and link also to a really excellent essay comparing the morality of Spiderman and Batman written by someone who knows a LOT more about the comic book characters.

No Way Home Spoilers
If you haven’t watched the movie then please skip over this post, I’ll be talking about my thoughts about this movie below if you want to read more but it’s very messy lol so enjoy
These are just my first reactions and thoughts to some of the key moments in the movie.
-“Everyone who knows and loves you, we will all forget you”. I might still not be over the fact that Peter has no parental figure looking over him now that May has passed so the fact that Strange said this warmed my heart
-Happy really tried his best to get Peter some time to escape and I really really appreciate that cause I did not realize that the people there were just gonna arrest Peter even tho none of the destruction was his fault. Happy was a good guy
-Andrew Garfield’s Spiderman redeemed himself by saving MJ and making sure that someone he loved didn’t suffer the same way he did 😭
-Toby Maguire’s Spiderman also did the same thing by stopping Tom’s Peter from killing Gobil/Norman the same way he killed him, with his glider, and even worked to get his cure 😭
-“I’m sure there’s a black Spiderman, right”. I love this reference to Miles cause I am almost positive they have to bring him in somehow. Like I know that there’s gonna be a new trilogy with Tom’s Peter so one of the movies has to be him mentoring Miles the same way Tony mentored Peter. It would really bring it all around
-Eddie/Venom was there the whole time but just drank then left some part of himself in that universe so eventually im sure it’ll attach himself to Peter to become spider venom or even attach to Flash or Ned for one of the next trilogy movies like the possibilities are endless
-Are we gonna see the variant of Strange where he’s the Sorcerer Supreme???
-Daredevil is now officially in the MCU. He was only there for like 3-4 minutes tops but he made a scene for sure. Would love to see him in the future.
-“Fury has been off earth for the last year” okay what’s going on with this? Like Talos was just doing whatever and then got Peter involved for what? Like this needs to be explained soon
-I don’t know how they’re going to work MJ and Ned into the next several movies but I would love to see them in Tom’s Peter future movies. I just want Peter to get his friends back 🥺
That’s all I have for now. I really enjoyed the movie and any little quirks in the movie were overlooked based on sheer context and cameos we were given like my heart is happy

I will tell you the entire theatre I was in cheered when Andrew Garfield came on screen and when Toby Maguire came on screen. It was an emotional rollercoaster I was laughing most of the time but the row of people beside me (my friends + one of my friends in the row ahead’s younger sister) were straight up sobbing and I was like uhh ok like yeah I get that death was sad but once she said the words it was inevitable. No more milf. But also everyone cheered when Andrew Garfrield’s Spider-Man saved MJ. And the whole all 3 peters in a lab was one of the funniest parts.

is mj your least favourite mary jane?
oh no lmao mary jane from the original toby maguire films is written way worse than michelle. she is completely unlikable. and mj’s not my least favourite peter love interest either! i think if she were written better she would’ve been amazing but as i said before, the romance element of spider-man films doesn’t really interest me nearly as much as the actual storyline. my favourite pairing in the films is gwen and peter in the amazing spider-man, and not in a shipping way like. i’m an adult i don’t ship things 😭 but in a “they were written very well” way but even then, i am way more interested in the actual storyline of those 2 films than i am in the romance, even though gwen was arguably a well written and interesting character with a solid background and motivations.
imo romance in superhero films tends to be very rushed and empty and the love interests, oftentimes female, tend to be badly written, which is why i really. really hate when my beloved characters fall prey to lazy writing </3 and it bothers me even more bc we saw with liz in homecoming that mcu writers are very capable of writing a love interest for peter who is well-rounded and three dimensional and has a lot of potential, yet they failed horribly with mj and it just makes me !!!!!! like she could’ve been so good if they actually cared abt her as a character and not just as shipping fodder
whew ok i got heated LMAO sorry i just. have a lot to say abt spider-man in general but especially mcu spider-man bc this trailer has revived my passion rip

a Review - Spider-Man: No Way Home
*Spoilers ahead*
Here are a few lessons for myself for the future or the past-me or whatever me in whatever other universe: don't watch all the trailers/exclusive clip beforehand, don't read up the Reddit theories or spoilers, don't re-binge all the past five Spider-Man movies the night prior, and don't walk into the theatre so goddamn excited.
Tumblr media
Spider-Man No Way Home continues the events after Far From Home and opens up to a world where Spider-Man's true identity is revealed.
No Way Home is, without a doubt, perhaps the most ambitious crossover since Infinity War and relies on five previous Spider-Man movies to complete the story. And here's the thing: I loved it. But the shift in tone in Marvel movies with excessive CGI fights, cheap jokes slipped in every single dialogue, and the numerous plot holes and plot conveniences really make me wonder how this is considered such a praised cinematic project. MJ and Ned were weak supporting characters and very much reminded me of Awkwafina's awkward role in Shang-Chi; they mostly stood there to impact the climax scene. The movie also underuses the villains and only focus on the emotional dept of two fan-favourites while the other just hang out with lame jokes and motivations and go along with the rest of the crew. Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s presence are vital to the story but fails for Tom Holland to push his character forward to shine properly. No Way Home is the epitome of what Marvel Studios does best and what the audience always fall for: Fan. Fucking. Service.

The movie really did have so much potential to what it was leading to; after all, the ending of this movie was the most dark of all previous Spider-Man movies. This was the first movie that Peter faced a consequence for his mistake instead of an unfortunate event. With that in mind, No Way Home did feel a lot like a placeholder to future MCU projects and Spider-Man movies disguised in the ultimate fan service scenes and sub-plots.
The shots and edits were surprisingly good, and next to Spider-Man 2 (2004), this movie felt most close to a superhero classic film. It successfully detached itself from relying on the Post-Blip excitement and focused soley on Peter Parker’s development, which, I think, many Marvel Studio projects failed to do this year.
The movie's biggest accomplishment is not the crossovers, but the way it balanced fan service and an ending to two decade long franchises. It successfully - and emotionally - closes off the story with a bittersweet arc, especially for Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man. The story additionally builds on to an arc and ending to famous villains, and, as part of every other Spider-Man's story of loss, No Way Home shuts the door for high-school Peter and shifts off to adulthood as he deal with significant loss and loneliness.
Tumblr media
That said, I did personally feel No Way Home was a bit underwhelming and if you have not watched the previous Spider-Man movies or even the recent MCU projects of this year, the movie doesn't stand strong by itself and it's easy to miss a lot of relevant references. It’s mainly built up by the audience hype, and I do think that, with time, and with Doctor Strange 2's release, Marvel Studios will definitely start having a difficult time in receiving mass audience like No Way Home or Endgame did. Currently, the Marvel Studios relies heavily on nostalgia and the familiarity of previous characters and I'm not complaining, but it won't be far until they start staggering from the mainstream media.
I did think that No Way Home was a good watch. It was fun to see all the previous villains back and it was nice to see Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man join. No Way Home is a bit overhyped, but it stands entertaining in its promising genre and reminds us that what we are experiencing with Marvel is a cinematic point in history and if anything, I’m thankful enough for to be part of that.
• Most memorables scenes go to: (1) Andrew-Spider-Man saving MJ, (2) Doc Ock and Green Goblin’s entrance, (3) Aunt May’s death, (4) Toby Maguire, (5) the ending.
