Fandom Rant Sessions:
Gilmore Girls - AYITL - Rory Gilmore
It is difficult to watch AYITL solely because of Rory. Why? Because watching it the first time I was shocked, appalled, disappointed, and confused by Rory's storyline.
When S7 ended, Rory had chosen her career and ambition over a marriage proposal. I was so proud of her! Not for hurting Logan (that scene actually made me feel bad for him), but for being independent and choosing her dreams rather than a guy.
The first thing we see on AYITL, 9 years after the Obama campaign trail, is Rory with a lack of direction. Which wasn't too farfetched, people hit roadblocks in life. She'd been lost before, but then (thanks to Jess) she found her purpose. Career-wise the issue I had was with her arrogance. She acted like she was too good for an opportunity until she was desperate, and then surprised when she was turned away. Remember when Paris gave Rory that pathetic repaving-of-the-school-parking-lot piece? Rory not only gladly accepted but proved through her writing that she belonged there.
Paul. I don't understand what his purpose was. They tried making it funny, how nobody seemed to be able to remember this guy. The joke flopped, like a dead fish. Words can be said about Rory and how she treated her boyfriends but with Paul it just wasn't believable. We've seen Rory be selfish in her relationships, she's cheated, and treated them like dirt at times. This extreme level of neglect and absolute disregard for Paul as a person (not to mention his feelings) doesn't sound like Rory. She didn't forget about Logan when she kissed Jess in S6. In S3 she cut her makeout session with Jess short, to go apologize to Dean for hurting him.
Why, oh why? The Rory and Logan storyline. See I thought Logan was charming in S5, but completely not right for Rory. I absolutely hated him in S6. By the end of S7 he had grown on me, making me sad when his proposal got rejected. Now this is before its Netflix debut, during all the hype of the return and speculation of who was gonna win between Dean, Jess, and Logan...I actually said that if Rory ends up with Logan, I would be okay. Then this shit happens! Logan is engaged, having an affair with Rory. Storyline sound familiar? Rory losing her virginity to a MARRIED Dean. Nobody needed (nor wanted) that painful reminder!
Back to her professional life, she saves her beloved town's newspaper and starts writing a book. She gains purpose and her drive back.
The one-night stand with a wookie. Another confusing aspect that makes no sense. Rory had her taste of casual sex with Logan and that had been a short-lived out-of-character situation, it happening in the present just seems off.
The 4 words. I understand Amy's reasoning for this scene, it was always meant to end with those words. However, it felt wrong and rushed. And I really don't wanna talk about it.
During most of AYITL, Rory is arrogant, self-absorbed, spoiled, directionless, and selfish. We saw instances of these attributes during the show but not to the point where we hated Rory, just disappointed in her actions and opinions.
I hope Rory gets redemption one day...
