Been seeing some discussion bubbling over whether those of us in left-leaning & LGBTQ communities ‘silencing’ ourselves on Meta’s platforms during the week of the TikTok ban & Trump’s inauguration is really helpful or not.
But Meta isn’t the whole internet. It may be a monopoly occupying a big chunk of the internet, but it’s not the entirety.
If anything, amplifying our voices on the apps Zuck sees as competitors could be a nice kick in his business ballsack.
Imagine if activity on Tumblr, BlueSky, Snapchat, RedNote, etc. went up during Lights Out week (January 19-26) while Meta’s activity went down…
Obviously not everyone can participate. Especially journalists, activists, small businesses, etc. who have to make sure their content gets seen widely regardless of the calendar date.
And hell if anyone wants to go fully offline that week for the sake of their mental health, that’s valid too.
The year’s barely started and things are already nuts. Just do what feels right to you & don’t be a dick.
