Great Spectacles. Compare the design of the Bernebau, the Colosseum, and Rhodes Stadium. How are the designs similar and different for the user experience of the fans that attend the Spectacles. Be specific about design choices and elements.
I am going to format this by stating the design factor I am going to be discussing about and then telling how it is present or not for each stadium.
Key:
- Bernebau: B
- Colosseum: C
- Rhodes: R
Roof Covering
R: Open-air concept with no overhead covering of any kind above the file for searing areas. The press box provides some shade and protection because of its height and placement on the west side against the back of the section, but priority seems to see and feel the temperate North Carolina weather, sun, and view of the rest of campus.
B: The walls of the stadium extend into a curved right angle that creates a permanent awning that reaches to the edge of the seats so that they stay dry. However, to keep the pitch covered from the elements, a removable roof that is automated and is able to be employed in the space where the metal overhang doesn’t reach. From the video in the stadium it looked like the roof was strips of metal that folded up like blinds. This is similar to the Colosseum but the cover is split in half and comes out from both sides of the fixed roof and meets in the middle to close
C: The entire top of the stadium was open, but to protect the crowd, a fabric cover could be extended over most of the spaces besides for the middle. This was an unheard strategy of technology to have ropes attached from wooden poles and taut from a suspended ring over the stands that could attract and retract folded fabric panels. Also, army men were stationed at the top to pull the ropes to put down the awning. This is similar to Bernabeu but the cover went in and downwards but stops and has a permeable material.
Concourse
R: The main concourse (home side) is located underneath the press box and grand stands and is held up by a barrel vault from one side of the stadium to the other. There are also some arches that are on the side of the walkway so that the entrances/exits for the concourse are wider for safety and open to more space for more options. The concession stands are up against stairs and seats and a wall with a window is just built vertically down to the ground. Although, in the middle of the concourse is it every dark because there are essentially walls on either side as the Woods Center lobby and long archways to the field are deep and don’t bring in a lot of light.
B: This stadium on the main floors almost has 2 rows of wide concourses next to each other that are separated by stairs to go up to the next level to accommodate the amount of fans and their needs. It seems as if one side is more for traveling longer distances for exploring and exiting down the ramp and the other is for entering your section. This works because the concession stands are double sided which I have never seen before. The concourse is covered with the floor above and a series of trusses. It acts as a a tunnel as the rectangular walls of the stadium surrounds it, but the ceilings are so tall and the outside wall has panels for ventilation and natural light while the other side essentially has a thin doorway into the seats.
C: When you first enter the colosseum, it is very similar to Rhodes as it is a barrel vault concourse with arched walls on either side to get people towards the seats. However, these are much grander and lead you to the inner concourse that is open to the sky and have stairs and seats along the walkway. This is similar to Bernebau, except the stairs went downwards to the seats instead of upwards like the colosseum.
Materials and Architecture
R: Brick, stone, wood framing, drywall, glass, tile (for press box?)
- Georgian: Symmetry, light/large windows, clean lines, chimneys, arches, columns (simpler), lanterns over entrances
B: Stainless steel, steel, glass, wood framing, drywall, concrete, carbon and glass fiber, cables, and fabric
- Modernism: Minimal, form follows function, indoor/outdoor format, rectangular
C: Cement, bricks, travertine stone, and tuff (rock with volcanic ash)
- Classical: Rounded arches, classical orders, symmetry, ornamentation, coffers, barrel vaults, smaller windows, and triangular surfaces above doors
Seating
R: The overall shape is a rounded rectangle with 2 layers of large stands on the home side and one large stand on the visiting side. They are somewhat shallow and simplistic.
The bleacher type seating is not continuous all the way around the stadium as steep hills of grass are behind both end zones and line both sides of the visiting stands. The suite in the press box and upper space in the field house are large open concept rooms for more of a community style feel rather than resources for separate parties.
B: The shape of the stands is also a rounded rectangle but with 5-8 layers of seats depending on if you are on the short or long side of the pitch. The stands are extremely steep as the height of the stadium can only sustain so many thousands of seats. It has the same idea as an amphitheater like the colosseum as it’s a centralized building with tiers of seats, but is not rounded. Regarding special areas, there seems for be a VIP section behind the benches that looks less compacted and busy as well as suites that are the skinniest I have ever seen with a row of chairs by a glass balcony against the glass windows of a indoor area that is the same width as the chairs.
C: This is a true amphitheater as it is an oval area that has rows of seats all the way around the center and rises in arrangement. It seems that there were 5 layers of seats and this was a system of hierarchy just like we have today at stadiums with owners and businesspeople, but solely based off of societal positions like emperors and senators, not income. These people with titles sat closest to the action while citizens and women sat at the highest points where you couldn’t see much.
Security/Entrances
R: There are essentially 3 main entrances for the Elon football games but the system of where fans come into the stadium is mostly based off how they travel to the game, not where their seat is. The only separation is if they need to buy a ticket or pick up one. There are assigned seats which are indicated by a series of 3 numbers for the section and labeled rows, however the organization is lightly followed.
B: Due to the attendance capacity, it seems there are close to 100 entrance doors in which each ticket is assigned to a door digit that is closest to their section they are assigned to. During the tour it also looked like they check tickets at the outside and scan then before entering your section through turnstiles for more standards and security.
C: Similar to the Bernabeu, they also had a very effective ticketing system that was filled through Norman numerals carved on the outside of each arched doorway and the classes didn’t mix at all. This was great for crowd control and the goal was if anything happened everybody could exit in 15 minutes. They had row and seat numbers as well and it is clear where we got that idea from for our modern entertainment centers.
Competition Surface
R: The singular purpose of the stadium is for football and rarely other outdoor sports or events as its only form is as a real grass field that is watered and maintained regularly with permanent uprights. Because it’s in good shape, an activity that would require it to be covered in flooring would kill the grass as it can only handle human movement and feet. One aspect that can be changed is if there is paint present for logos and lines or not.
B: This is one of the most technologically advanced stadium floors in this century as the real turf is taken off in panels and lowered below the exposed floor that has artificial turf on it that can also be taken off for just concrete. The real grass that gets put below forms the put together field again to be watered and grown with uv lights. This is different from Rhodes as it is multi-use and can be set up for more than just soccer games.
C: The colosseum is somewhat similar to Bernebau as there are 2 layers including the arena floor and underground tunnel walkways and like the turf can be raised and lowered, the colosseum had wooden elevators that would bring the animals, scenery, and gladiators above ground for a surprise element during the shows. However, the arena floor was wood covered in sand to soak up blood, waste, and other substances so it could be scooped up and reused. It’s similar to Rhodes in which only purpose was for specific performances and not other occurrences.

Sustainable Trends in Home Renovations and Building
Tumblr media
Sustainable and eco-friendly approaches to renovating and building houses have gained popularity in recent years. Lately, the focus has been on low-flow fixtures, water-efficient appliances, and tankless water heaters as sustainable, eco-friendly features. In addition to upgrading their appliances, homeowners integrate sustainability into their building projects.
Renovation projects in 2024 also emphasize using recycled materials and reducing waste as a part of home improvement projects. Using reclaimed wood has been one approach to decreasing reliance on wood from trees, minimizing deforestation. Not only are homeowners focusing on the materials used, but they are also shopping locally, choosing locally sourced materials and contractors. Going with local materials and contractors reduces the carbon footprint that transportation and traveling contribute to.
In 2024, homeowners are redesigning their places to be minimalist and multifunctional. Simplicity and function are the order of the day for many homeowners who seek to get most of the space they have because, in some cases, they do not have much space. For example, minimalism and multifunctionality work great for homes in urban places.
Homeowners and the designers helping them might create innovative layouts that allow a desk to transform into a bed or a kitchen island that can also function as a dining table. These innovative tricks that minimize space and maximize function also de-clutter space. Again, these spaces offer homeowners a harmonious, efficient experience that does not limit them on style or comfort.
Homeowners are also embracing natural light and biophilic designs. Skylights and large windows have become popular features that enable homeowners to bring more light into their homes. These fixtures radiate large amounts of light in interiors during the day, minimizing reliance on artificial light and reducing electricity costs. Besides relying on renovations that allow more light into the home, adding natural elements to the house, such as indoor plants, green walls, and stone and other natural materials, has been another trend in home renovations. By integrating natural lighting and materials, homeowners have created spaces that are not only environmentally friendly but also harmonious with nature.
Outside of simple renovations, homeowners use alternative methods for building their homes. For instance, one trend is to exchange the typical single-family home for a home created out of shipping containers. Yes, the exact shipping containers seen in any of the country's ports have become a staple material in housing. Usually, these containers are discarded after use, but using them as the house's structure is a chance for these metals to upcycle them. These homes are constructed from shipping containers combined to create a home's skeleton.
Outside of being a way to reuse material, using shipping containers saves contractors time because they provide the home with structure, something the builder would have to do. Plus, these containers can sit next to each other or be placed on top to save space, and aluminum and steel are durable materials.
Modular construction is another approach to building a home that offers sustainability and eco-friendliness. This method of homebuilding builds part of the home offsite and then assembles these parts at the house's location. Usually, the roof, the home's trusses (beams connected by nodes), or framed wall pieces are built elsewhere and connected to the house. One of the positive aspects of modular construction where sustainability is concerned is that it minimizes consumption. Offsite construction enables builders to use the best equipment to construct pieces, requiring less labor and reducing the amount of waste generated. With a more efficient building method, builders reduce timelines, contribute to a decreased carbon footprint, and reduce costs.

wood is terrible but the cmu is heavy dangerous theysay and the block that fuses they wont use. so you use wood. and timber if they fall are heavy. and wood frame is light if you use trusses not beams and clue lam and it is strong. if it oesnt rust so they use metal. and it works. tons use it and recycle steels and metsl. we do this and build. already see it. they dont want it. and dont approve for ages. so we use meetal and they like it. and same for nails no some crhomolly. and up they go. tons do it. and we can do the habitat stuff. and we build now. and panelized yes realy it is only the walls sheethed and framed and floor if not too large a span usually too large accross.
and we worked it out used it works great. an it works great. is a panning thing. and you have floor panels of wood frame plywood three quarter regular. cdx. and about 11-6 wide and stagger as in garths apartment to one side of the wall you bring it and a short filler on the right and the next a long one that crosses over the hall on the right to left small one on the left. and well planned works. fillers and such later. and you meet them wiht staggered panels that go accross. and the plywood would hang over. nope you dont do it that way and you match it less overhang and it is percode. two foot reuired made up by bulkier framing. and he doesnt like it..but does.
and tons like it. i can go get it started. an they like it. see his system. fly the wal panels and twenty to twenty five and he says prob twenty but the stagger and we see it true too. and two foot and clips and all no. but yes join it with bolts and no problem and they see it overlap here and bolts and overlap. and go in fast. tons of them no but fast.
and the wall panels are fast. nailed glued and some screws. overhang set and stggered and window s cut out. and install nail the bottom on and then the overhang below. and done. bolts occasionally and hardare perc ode are on it already.
thier guys have a board and hang it off a rope around thier necks and hit it with big hammers sledge and 12 or 14 lb and yell and scream and get it square an fit in the plywood move it and yell. and about an hour. and check it nail it. and done. the panels done mostly in the factory. and yeh a rush so smetones smaller sections about four panels wide and at garths eight panels. the walls are faster and fit right mostly and you push it no instll then nail and in about one hour for half garths place and fast ok. and better na big crews it is about forty five minutes. it is framed in two to three days. fstest design yes.
and then the frame us up. we can do it in two days. and some of them. but you need twnty to thirty ppl. and active ones. once nailed. off too you roof and enclose the awalls day four. and ok yes. the bolted chocks on the trucks never change usually 2x 6 or x8 will fit ten but ok they only go up four and need 2x8 on two only. fun ok. and it works great. all of it is bolted no but teh main members are andd odown with large simson embeds. and inserts. works great. this is a system ok and we use it. now.
roof and you go about 12' widde per the dedrisign no it is near it. and per every 24" and you sheath the roof same deal two foot connectores. and must be they say can be done calculate it. to the end. and you travel wiht wide load and highways are larger. and usaully only thirty foot long max. we can use and accomodate larger. sheeth it. two foot staggers. travel at night ad on off times mostly. can set down but have to use blocks adn level prior to and it is not easy. we will do that ...and make stantions that you can level andwhen you find the corners and other. we do see it. and auto level no but ok..to a certain level and they are able to comm. and we see it is simple no. he says trianglate and use a block the size of the stantion anchor and drive it on the mark outside outside mark each of four corners. and use a hundred foot tape. mark it and drive them in and they adjust. are wood and ppl have them. up and down. and about a foot of travel. and they will and say it wow fun.
pick a corner. and use a tube level ad it is a water level and your all set. and they set it down. not hard. a tool can drive it but all have hammers. lol. argh argh and they use it and they take the hammers out lol ahahah me probalby

What is a Residential Building Structure?
Before delving into the various types of residential building structures, let's briefly understand what a
residential building is. A residential building is primarily designed to accommodate families,
individuals, or groups of people. The fundamental components of any building, such as the foundation,
floors, walls, beams, columns, roof, stairs, etc., work together to support, enclose, and protect the
building structure. This structure dictates the stability, design, and overall aesthetic appeal of the
building, collectively referred to as the building structure.
Importance of Residential Building Structure
Let's begin by understanding the significance of choosing the right residential building structure
before exploring different types. A thoughtfully designed structure not only ensures stability and
safety but also plays a crucial role in enhancing the aesthetic and functional aspects of your home. It
influences factors such as the amount of natural light, ventilation, and open space available. A
judicious selection of the building structure can lead to cost savings, streamline the construction
process, and enhance overall living conditions.

Most Common Residential Building Structures
1. Load-Bearing Structures
Load-bearing structures represent the initial category of construction that bears the
weight of a building through its walls, eliminating the necessity for a separate frame and
providing greater freedom in creative and architectural expressions. Materials like brick,
stone, or concrete can be employed to form load-bearing walls, offering commendable
heat insulation and noise reduction. This construction method is frequently chosen for its
cost-effectiveness and the extensive array of design possibilities.
Advantages of Load-Bearing Structure:1. Design Versatility: Load-bearing constructions allow for inventive and unique designs, as
the walls themselves serve as the primary support.
2. Thermal Insulation: The thickness of load-bearing walls provides effective thermal
insulation, maintaining comfortable interior temperatures.
3. Soundproofing: Densely constructed load-bearing structures reduce noise transmission,
creating a serene living environment.
2. Frame Structures
Frame structures are a reliable option for residential buildings. They offer flexibility,
versatility, and can withstand various loads. They're suitable for low and high-rise buildings,
allowing architects to create spacious and open interiors. With a frame home, you have a
blank canvas to design a dwelling that will stand the test of time.
Benefits of Frame Structure:-
·
Versatility: Frame buildings allow for a wide range of architectural styles and open-
plan interiors to fit your tastes.
·
Easy Expansion: These buildings are perfect for future upgrades because they are
simple to modify or expand without jeopardizing the integrity of the construction.
·
Fast and Affordable: Frame constructions can be built very quickly and affordably,
saving time and money throughout the construction process.
Other Building Structures Include:
1. Composite Structures
Composite structures combine materials for maximum benefits, enhancing strengths and
minimizing weaknesses. Architects use concrete, steel, and wood to create innovative and
impactful designs for sustainable and visually attractive solutions ideal for contemporary and
futuristic architecture.
Benefits of Composite Structure:-
·
Maximum Strength: Composite structures can maximize their strength while
minimizing the weaknesses of the different materials by combining them.
·
Sustainable Solutions: Composite structures frequently use ecologically friendly
materials, giving them a sustainable option for homeowners who care about the
environment.
·
Architectural Innovation: The adaptability of composite constructions enables
designers to push the envelope and produce distinctive and avant-garde residential
structures.
2. Shell Structures
If you desire a home that is visually striking and distinctive, opting for shell construction
might be the perfect decision. The organic and artistic allure of a curved or shell-like
structure can result in an architectural marvel. Thanks to the even distribution of load
across the shell, these buildings exhibit exceptional stability. Shell constructions areparticularly favored for creating futuristic residences and iconic landmarks. Envision having
a breathtaking shell roof that distinguishes your home from others.
Advantages of Shell Structure:
1. Unique Architectural Appeal: Shell constructions yield visually captivating and distinctive
designs, transforming your dream home into a one-of-a-kind architectural masterpiece.
2. Superior Stability: The evenly distributed stress over the curved shell's surface ensures
strength and security in these constructions.
3. Spacious Interiors: Shell buildings can span considerable distances without the need for
intermediate supports, providing ample open space for living.
Conclusion
Selecting the right residential building structure can have a significant impact on your dream
home. Each building has its own unique beauty and benefits that cater to different

Understanding the Different Types of Steel Frames and Trusses
Steel frames and trusses are essential components in the construction industry, providing structural support for buildings, bridges, and other large structures. They offer several advantages, including high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and versatility. This blog will delve into the different types of steel frames and trusses, exploring their unique characteristics and applications.
Types of Steel Frames
Moment Resisting Frames (MRFs):
Light gauge steel framing is designed to resist both axial loads (compression or tension) and bending moments.
Typically used in high-rise buildings and structures subjected to lateral loads like wind and earthquakes.
MRFs rely on the continuity of members to provide structural stability.
Braced Frames:
Incorporate diagonal bracing members to resist lateral loads.
Bracing can be either X-bracing or V-bracing.
Commonly used in industrial buildings, warehouses, and other structures where lateral stability is a primary concern.
Rigid Frames:
A combination of MRFs and braced frames, offering a balance of structural efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Rigid frames are suitable for a wide range of building types, including commercial, residential, and industrial structures.

Ten Insights for Designing Eco-Friendly Green Homes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For cooler climates, minimize window sizes on the north side to minimize heat loss and larger windows on the south side to let more sunlight in. The manner of positioning your home is important to make sure your house is comfortable enough no matter what the climate is.
Tumblr media
If you are serious about having a green home, use materials that make your home environmental friendly. You can make use of cement, ceramics, bricks, aluminum, glass, and steel as the main raw material in building your home. Before, wood is the primary material for green homes but due to the issue on illegal logging, wood is replaced by mild steel and aluminum. Mild steel can be used for roof trusses, walling, ceiling and others. Mild steel is stainless, lighter, more robust, easy to install and would last longer. You can also use LED lightings, non-toxic paint , recycled glass, recycled tiles, recycled aluminum and other recycled materials.
Tumblr media
Guza Architects Windows could be made of wood or aluminum frames. Aluminum can be reused, free of toxins, energy-saving, cost-effective and free of cancer causing substances. The size of windows can be adjusted in relation to the mass of walls and floors that receives direct or indirect light. Place roof overhangs, canopies or awnings to shade your room from excessive heat. Try to determine the direction of prevailing winds and use casement windows on these areas for it can help hollowing out air that can give natural ventilation.
Tumblr media
Cell Space Architects Choose room locations by considering the mount of natural light and air that could enter it. You can also take into consideration the amount of heat that can enter your room in some time of the day. But you also have to consider the usage of the room in order to determine which ones will need enough heat and.
Tumblr media
Zone 4 Architects Most green homes have open design layouts in order to reduce construction cost. It also improves light and ventilation. It would also be easier to arrange your furniture if you have an open space. If you would like to have a touch of nature in some parts of the house, you can have them directly connected to an outdoor space for gatherings.
Tumblr media
Guza Architects Green roofing is great for it is cost efficient and attractive. Using a green roofing system can give extra insulation that helps keep energy consumption down. It can be used on some parts of the roof or for the entire roof. If you will not use green grass roofs, you can still go green by controlling storm water runoff with perimeter drains, gutters and subsurface drainage systems. You can collect rain water using rainwater catchment so that it can be used for washing clothes, flushing toilets, watering plants and irrigating landscapes. Do not use asphalt shingles if you plan to use rainwater for vegetation and drinking.
Tumblr media
Choose materials that can absorb solar heat like natural or fabricated brick. Bricks made up of sand, lime, cement and others are good for they are fire-resistant, absorb sun’s heat and have low water absorption. Some use ceramics for their walls which is also good for it is low in maintenance and could create an elegant look.
Tumblr media
Zone 4 Architects Depending on the function of your room, you can choose from a variety of flooring materials like marble, parquet, granite, terrazzo, ceramic, wood and bamboo. But if you really want an eco-friendly flooring, it would be better to use laminated wood and bamboo especially for your bedroom.
