Smolder | Smoker x G/N!Reader
prompt inspiration from @bulle-blackhole: "An accidental brush of lips followed by a pause and going back for another, on purpose."
wc: 1.2k | cw: mutual pining, smoking, shot gunning, drinking (not excessive), suggestive at the end but still SFW | read this on ao3!
a/n: ok ok ok you all got me, I'm in to Smokey now. this prompt felt so perfect for him and it kind of wrote itself. enjoy!
The sounds of clinking glasses and soft music drifted into the cool, nighttime breeze. The last of the men from G-5 could be heard pouring back out into the streets, continuing their night of debauchery. It was a hard fought day, so naturally there was a need to celebrate. Captain Tashigi had left on her own to get a well deserved night of sleep, it was exhausting to keep the wildest of the Marines in line.
Vice Admiral Smoker hunched over the bar, pulling a fresh cigar from his coat to light. Smoke billowing from his lips, he turned his gaze back to you from across the room. You waited patiently on the balcony ledge just outside, chin in your hand as you looked out at the sea. He figured you’d have your own plans for the evening, but you decided to keep him company for another drink. You’d always had your own motivations. Whatever those were, he was glad you’d stayed behind. Two crystal tumblers of whiskey appeared with a thud against the bar, breaking his focus on you. Placing his cigar between his teeth, he made his way back to you with drinks in tow.
He wasn’t sure what to make of you when you were first assigned to him all those years ago. New Marines were typically too green or too foolish to stand on their own, not without firm guidance and a good kick in the ass. But you learned quickly, took pride in your duties, and became a fine Marine quickly. So much so, you were whisked away by former Captain Hina for your talents. He’d hear a passing word about you from time to time, admiration from your superiors, even your ascension to officer ranks. As you rose higher and blossomed in your career, he pushed an unnameable feeling deeper within himself.
And now here you were, back in his life after all this time. He handed you your glass as you smiled, silently raising it towards his own before tilting your head back for a gulp. Observing you out of the corner of his eye, he noted the curve of your jaw, the flex in your neck, the subtle remnants of liquor that lingered on your lips as you pulled the glass away. A curious, confident grin spread across your face as you swirled your whiskey glass between your fingertips. That sinking, burning feeling returned in his chest stronger than ever.
“Mind if I try?” you nodded towards the cigar that he held between his teeth. Smoker raised an eyebrow at your request, taking another drag before exhaling over his shoulder.
“Didn’t take you for the type.” he commented, maintaining his eye contact with you before offering the cigar between his fingers.
“Yeah, well… spending time with Rear Admiral Hina must have rubbed off on me.” You plucked the burning roll of tobacco from his gloved hand, grazing his fingers along the way. You watched his eyes follow your hand to your mouth, your heart drumming in your chest. After all, it was your idea to be reassigned to G-5 and reunite with the man who taught you everything you knew, the man who never ceased to cross your mind.
“Old habits die hard, I guess.”
He swallowed hard at your remark, breathlessly following the smoldering cigar as it connected to your lips, spellbound through the lingering cloud of smoke.
Unfortunately for you, your time as a smooth talker was over as you took the overly ambitious drag of his cigar. Fire spread through your lungs as you coughed, hot tears welling up in your eyes. “Fuck–” you reached for your glass of whiskey to ease your suffering. “How can you stand those?”
“Heh,” he scoffed, a smile curling at his lips as he reclaimed his cigar. Your face was red with anguish and embarrassment, eyes glassy with tears below your furrowed brows. “You can’t be good at everything, Rookie.”
“Vice Admiral,” you croaked, glaring at the name you could never shake from him. “With all due respect. Shut up.”
Smoker belly laughed, taking another puff triumphantly. You were never afraid to push his buttons, even as a subordinate. You had guts and he admired that about you greatly. As you finally broke from your frustration with a weak chuckle, he couldn’t help but note how his heart swelled, that feeling that only came from you. He took a swig from his whiskey glass before turning to face you fully.
“You know, I can help you. If you want.”
You took your last sip from your glass before setting it down. You carefully observed the gentleness of his features, the softness around his tired eyes.
“Alright, I’m listening.”
Smoker took a few puffs of his cigar, eyes not leaving yours. He reached his hand out in front of your face and motioned you closer. Your eyes widened, but you complied. His large hands were gentle to the touch, cradling your chin between his fingers while his thumb ever so slightly pushed your jaw further open.
Your lips drew close to inhale the tobacco Smoker passed to you. The tinge of liquor off his breath and warmth of his skin millimeters away intoxicated you, the intimacy made it hard for you to even breathe over the sound of your own heartbeat in your ears.
As you drew away to exhale, your bottom lip grazed against his accidentally. His lips were softer than you imagined, even the fleeting touch sent your head spiraling. You opened your eyes to meet his warm umber gaze, your face still held in his hand like a precious object. You turned your head slightly to exhale, but didn’t leave his grip. His eyes flickered down to your lips, a slight pink tinging his face below heavy lidded eyes. A moment had presented itself and you decided to seize it.
But before you had the chance to make your move, Smoker’s lips enveloped yours, the scratchiness of his stubble striking against your skin. He was tender and purposeful, every inch of contact savored as years of pining from the both of you finally came to a sweet conclusion. You ran your fingers through his ashen hair as he pulled you closer, melting under your touch. The two of you had long forgotten the world around you, all there was to do was to pour yourselves into each other.
You broke your kiss for a much needed breath, only to find Smoker’s eyes widened in panic. He smoothed his hair back and took a final swig of his drink, cheeks fully reddened. “That was– I shouldn’t have– we–”
“Hey,” you reached for his hand that kept messing his hair. “Do you wanna get out of here?”
All you could do was smile at the flustered man, his eyes calculating his next move. He ashed his cigar in the balcony ledge before returning your smile, pulling you by the hand from the bar and into the night.

Febuwhump Day 21: Shackled Alternate 3: Soft Words Fandom: Final Fantasy XIV Characters/Ship: Nourval, Original Character, Sanson Smyth/Guydelot Thildonnet Triggers/Content warnings: n/a
Part One, Part Two, Part Three, Part Four, Part Five, Part Six, Part Seven
Sanson can't believe they made it out of the prison without being caught.
It's a stroke of luck - perhaps even providence - that the guard on duty doesn't know Commander Heuloix well enough to identify him at a glance, and that he wasn't dutiful enough to look closely at the two men leaving: Nourval's disguise is a flimsy one at best. The clothing fits poorly. The coat is too tight across his shoulders; his sleeves an ilm too short... but he is an elezen. The guard saw two men, a hyur and an elezen, enter. The guard saw two men, a hyur and an elezen, leave.
People will see what they expect to see.
He's walking briskly now, leaving the prison well behind before anyone thinks to check Nourval's cell. If an alarm should be raised, if they should be caught... gods, he can be of no help to Guydelot from inside a cell. Nourval hastens along at his side, keeping his hat tugged down.
A part of Sanson, guiltily, is surprised the man seems to be keeping to the plan. Other men would have bolted at the first taste of freedom - and however this night should end, Nourval will find himself once more behind bars, with no one but Sanson, Vorsaile, and - gods willing - Guydelot aware of his heroism.
Well. And his sister.
"We're to meet Miss Raicheille at the docks," Sanson says, softly, under his breath. "From there, she swears she will tell us where your uncle has taken Guydelot."
"And we must hope he may still be found there," Nourval replies, equally quiet, pale beneath the brim of his borrowed hat. "Sanson... what will you do if Astarnaix has already begun putting his plans into action? If-"
"No." He's louder, sharper than he means to be. He shakes his head. Quiets. "No. Nourval, I cannot do this thing and entertain the possibility that I waited too long to realize something was wrong. I'm defying every rule I've ever held dear for this, and likely throwing away my career in the bargain; if I allow myself to think it's all for naught, I-"
"There you are!"
Raicheille bounds out of the darkness, nearly startling both men half to death. She marches directly to Nourval, peering up under his hat. "It is you! I was worried-"
"You," Nourval says, steering her away, back the direction she came from. "Were meant to wait for us at the docks, I have been informed! What you're doing here, I can scarce imagine."
She wriggles in his grasp, stubborn. "You were taking forever! I thought-"
Sanson stops listening, letting the siblings bicker as he follows; his thoughts are too much in turmoil to do more than let it wash over him. It's a blessing the streets are empty tonight - the very last thing they want is for someone to wonder why two officers of the Twin Adder appear to be accosting a young girl.
Guydelot would find the whole thing tremendously amusing.
I'll tell him all about it, he thinks, clinging to hope. Every bit of it, if only he lives.
"Now," Nourval says, as they reach the docks at last. "Where has our dear uncle gone?"
Raicheille folds her arms, pursing her lips in a way Sanson doesn't like. "I'll take you there," she says. "Take me with you."
"Absolutely not," her brother replies, in a tonne that - to Sanson's ears - suggests he's not surprised by the demand. "You must return home immediately. Doubtless they know you've run away by now; can you imagine the chaos you must have sown? If it should come to light that Captain Sanson was visiting me in gaol today with you in tow, how swiftly do you suppose our plans will unravel?"
She flushes, but stands her ground. "Without me, you'd still be in that cell!"
We're wasting time Guydelot may not have. Sanson fights the urge to shout; makes himself speak softly, evenly. "You truly won't tell us where we need to go unless you are permitted to come with us?"
She tips her chin up, defiant.
Sanson eyes Nourval sidelong. "Now, where have I seen that particular stratagem before?"
Nourval has the good grace to look abashed. "I'll remind you I was not a girl of fourteen summers, my good Captain."
"No. But I daresay we'll be just as successful at convincing her to stay behind as I was at convincing you. And the stakes are far higher." He sighs. "She comes. I'll see to her safety myself; you have my word... but we must be off. Every moment we waste..."
I cannot bear to think of it. Guydelot, please... please, be alive.

Day 24: Bar
For prompt Bar, as part of FFxivWrite2024. Albi was no fool to think it was anything other than the last dregs of sentiment in Gaius’s heart that swayed their steps. Post-Endwalker.
“Is this appropriate?” Albi asks quietly, one hand gripping the collar of Gaius’s overcoat, the other clenched around the neck of a darkly tinted bottle. It is covered in a thick coating of dust, but the cap has been freshly popped off – the pair had come across the shelled remnants of the bar several weeks previous, but on this bitterly cold evening, had decided to finally nose around to see if anything of note or worth remained.
“I couldn’t say.” Gaius replies back idly, his mouth not moving far from Albi’s neck, even as he speaks the words. “But it’s not as if that has ever been of any concern to us, hm?”
This gets something like a chuckle out of Albi, the fog of her breath visible in the frigid air. She takes another drink from the bottle, the warmth of it settling pleasantly in her chest. Before Gaius can take it for another swig of his own, she moves to grasp his face with her free hand, nails scratching against the stubble of his jaw as she pulls his chin towards her own.
Grief is as heavy on his breath as the whiskey is, unspoken, but there was no need. There were no words that could aptly describe the feeling of standing in the remains of your homeland, no matter how complexly one might feel about the matter — this, Albi knew all too well. But as these things often go, the child outlives the motherland, Gaius now bereft of his forebears as well as his own progeny, his hand partially to blame for both.
Their patrols typically kept them to the perimeters of Camp Broken Glass, or Tertium, but more often than not their duties also led them into the city proper. It was beneficial to get a lay of the land with someone who knew the streets well, she had often thought – but Albi was no fool to think it was anything other than the last dregs of sentiment in Gaius’s heart that swayed their steps, as if there were still some unnatural presence in Garlemald that clawed at the hearts of her sons and daughters.
Her escort had slowed when they had first passed the remnants of the former bar, foundations still standing, but little else. Albi could barely tell it had been a bar at first, until her eyes had fallen upon the shattered receptacles and stools littering the concrete as they stopped. Gaius’s words then had been neatly clipped, clinical, as he told her that he had taken Cid and Nero here for their first drinks when they had come of age. “My father did the same for me. It only felt right.” He concludes with, before striding off again, the crunch of glass and ice under his boots ending the one-sided conversation.
Gaius biting down on her lip drags Albi from her alcohol-tinged reverie, and she jerks her head back with a grimace. The bottle is smoothly retrieved from her hands in the same motion, but its captor makes little effort to move very far from the warmth of where their legs are pressed together, haphazardly perched among crates as they were.
“Eyes sharp, Warrior of Light.” He drawls, the dry use of the epithet as much a sign of his dour mood as anything else. As he takes his sip from the bottle, Albi drifts back to thoughts of him in this bar, nearly two decades previous, two Academy students in tow. She wonders if they had toasted anything for the occasion, if Cid’s father had been absent by the whim of clashing schedules, or the beginnings of something more sinister. She knew nothing of Nero’s family, was aware of little about his life before the military outside of the odd anecdote of his rural upbringing. She didn’t know much more of Gaius himself.
It was neither the time nor place to be asking such personal questions, here and now, but it was not unlike them to spend warmer evenings talking at length of this and that. It was how Albi had come to learn more of Midas than she had ever heard from the mouth of his son, Gaius’s eyes crinkling with both fondness and regret as she told him of the man he had been, once upon a time. Albi wondered if Cid had been apprised of a great deal of the tales she had heard from him, aware that they would have died with Gaius had they not been quietly shared in the dark of their lodgings, in empty bars, when shuffling through the capitol’s remains.
They sit there for a little while longer – the bottle is wordlessly knocked back against Albi’s knee, the last sip saved, an offering of the last measure. Now empty, it is not discarded among its brethren on the ground, but instead delicately placed on the crate they had sat upon, as if it were the counter of the bar many years previous, at closing time. As if this were the gentler end to a gentler evening, some lifetime ago.
They’d be back, Albi knew, be it here or elsewhere. Maybe she’d ask more of Gaius, over their next drink.

The Versatility of Tow Truck Light Bars
A tow truck light bar is not just for tow trucks; it can be fitted on a wide range of heavy-duty vehicles to improve visibility and safety. These bars are especially beneficial for vehicles that are routinely driven in low-light or dangerous circumstances, such as construction trucks, snow plows, utility vehicles, and roadside assistance vehicles. To give you an idea of what tow truck light bars are used on which vehicles.
Tow Trucks: Tow trucks use high-intensity LED light bars as their primary means of signaling other vehicles when they need roadside help or in an emergency. The towing light bar alerts other vehicles or pedestrians in the vicinity that a broken down vehicle is being towed, thus ensuring safe travel for the driver and the tow truck.
Utility Vehicles: Utility trucks, such as those used by electric, water or telecom companies, often work in areas that require further complexity or require road closures around them, and tow truck light bars can provide a clear warning alert to let other drivers know that repairs are being made nearby.
Construction Vehicles: Dump trucks, excavators and other construction vehicles that regularly operate in construction zones use tow truck light bars. The flashing lights help alert drivers and pedestrians to the presence of the vehicle, thereby reducing the risk of accidents.
Snow Plows: Snow plows operating in severe weather conditions, especially during snowstorms, need strong illumination to be seen by other vehicles. the tow truck light bar can be seen quickly in snow or fog to prevent possible collisions.
Emergency Vehicles: Tow truck light bar is more essential for ambulances and fire trucks, every call out is an emergency mission, need to avoid the surrounding pedestrians or vehicles as soon as possible, need to have a high brightness warning function.
Agricultural and Farm Equipment: Tractors and other heavy agricultural gear operating on or near highways benefit from a light bar for increased safety. In rural locations with limited lighting, a tow truck light bar guarantees that other drivers notice these Tractors .
RVs and Trailers: For those who travel with RVs, especially at night or in bad weather, a light bar can significantly improve visibility. Towing trailers or moving in unlit areas requires a clear indication to other drivers.
Key Features to Consider
When choosing a tow truck light bar, consider features such as:
Multiple Flash Patterns: Different lighting modes like strobe, flash, and rotating patterns offer versatility for different situations.
Easy Installation: Magnetic mounts or fixed brackets provide flexibility in mounting options. The lights are usually powered by a 12V or 24V socket, making them compatible with most vehicles.
Waterproof Design: Choosing an IP67 or higher protection rating ensures that the luminaire is protected against rain, snow and mud, making it stable in any weather.
Whether you operate a tow truck, construction vehicle, or even an RV, a tow truck light bar is an essential tool for enhancing road safety and ensuring visibility in low-light or hazardous conditions.

The 2006 Chevy Silverado 1500 is a workhorse of a truck, known for its reliability and rugged build. However, like any vehicle, it can benefit from a few aftermarket upgrades to enhance its performance, comfort, and style. Whether you're looking to boost its power, improve handling, or simply give it a fresh look, here are some of the best aftermarket parts and accessories to consider for your 2006 Silverado 1500.
1. Performance Upgrades
Cold Air Intake System One of the most effective ways to improve your Silverado's engine performance is by installing a cold air intake system. This upgrade allows your engine to breathe better by providing a steady flow of cooler, denser air. The result? Increased horsepower, improved throttle response, and potentially better fuel efficiency.
Performance Exhaust System Upgrading to a performance exhaust system can unleash additional power from your Silverado’s engine. A high-flow exhaust system reduces backpressure, allowing the engine to expel exhaust gases more efficiently. Besides the power boost, it also adds a deeper, more aggressive exhaust note that enhances the truck's presence on the road.
Tuner or Programmer A tuner or programmer can recalibrate your Silverado's engine control unit (ECU) to optimize performance based on your specific needs. Whether you want more horsepower, improved towing capability, or better fuel economy, a quality tuner can deliver noticeable improvements.
2. Suspension and Handling
Lift Kit For those who love off-roading or just want a more commanding view of the road, a lift kit is a must-have upgrade. A quality lift kit will raise your truck’s height, giving you the clearance needed to tackle rough terrain while also providing space for larger, more aggressive tires.
Upgraded Shocks and Struts Replacing your Silverado's factory shocks and struts with performance-oriented aftermarket options can greatly enhance its handling and ride comfort. Look for heavy-duty shocks designed for off-road use if you frequently venture off the beaten path, or opt for performance shocks that improve on-road handling.
Sway Bars Upgrading your sway bars can significantly reduce body roll during cornering, making your Silverado feel more stable and responsive. This is particularly beneficial for those who use their truck for heavy towing or hauling.
3. Exterior Enhancements
LED Lighting Upgrades Upgrading your Silverado’s headlights, taillights, and fog lights to LED units is a simple yet impactful modification. 2006 Chevy Silverado LED headlights offer superior brightness, longer lifespan, and a modern look that enhances your truck's overall appearance.
Custom Grille A custom grille is a great way to add a personal touch to your Silverado’s front end. Whether you prefer a rugged, off-road look or something sleek and stylish, there are plenty of grille designs to choose from to match your aesthetic preferences.
Running Boards Installing running boards not only adds a stylish element to your truck but also makes it easier to get in and out of your elevated Silverado, especially if you’ve added a lift kit. Choose from various designs, including stainless steel, black powder-coated, or even illuminated options.
4. Interior Comfort and Technology

Truck Bumper
Truck Bumpers Protecting Your Beast on the Road and Beyond
The mighty truck. A symbol of power, utility, and adventure. But even the most formidable machine needs protection. That's where truck bumpers come in. These vital parts act as the first line of defense against bumps, scrapes, and collisions, safeguarding your truck and its precious cargo.
However, the stock bumpers that come with most trucks are often designed more for aesthetics than serious protection. This is where the world of aftermarket truck bumpers opens up a whole new level of functionality and style.
Why Choose an Aftermarket Truck Bumper?
Aftermarket truck bumpers offer a plethora of advantages over their stock counterparts. Here are some key reasons to consider upgrading:
Enhanced Protection: Stock bumpers are typically made from lightweight materials that may not hold up well in a collision. Aftermarket bumpers, on the other hand, are constructed from heavy-duty steel or winch-compatible aluminum, providing superior protection for your truck's front end, grille, and undercarriage.
Off-Road Prowess: For those who venture beyond the pavement, aftermarket bumpers are a must-have. They offer increased ground clearance, allowing you to tackle tougher terrain without scraping your undercarriage. Many also come equipped with winch mounts, crucial for getting you out of sticky situations.
Utility and Functionality: Aftermarket bumpers can be decked out with a variety of functional features. This can include integrated fog lights, LED light bars for improved nighttime visibility, tow hooks for recovery purposes, and even step bars for easier access to your truck bed.
Aesthetics and Personalization: Let's not forget the visual appeal! Aftermarket bumpers come in a wide range of styles, from sleek and modern to rugged and aggressive. You can choose a bumper that complements your truck's personality and reflects your own sense of style.
Selecting the Right Aftermarket Truck Bumper
With so many options available, choosing the right aftermarket bumper can feel overwhelming. Here are some key factors to consider:
Your Truck and Usage: First, consider your truck's make and model. Aftermarket bumpers are designed for specific vehicles to ensure a perfect fit. Next, think about how you use your truck. If you primarily drive on-road, a more low-profile bumper might suffice. But for off-road enthusiasts, a heavy-duty winch-compatible bumper is the way to go.
Material and Construction: Steel is the most common material for aftermarket bumpers, offering unmatched durability. However, aluminum bumpers are lighter and won't rust, making them a good choice for some applications. Consider the trade-off between weight and strength.
Features: Think about the additional features you might need. Do you want a winch mount? Integrated lights? Step bars? Make a list of your priorities and choose a bumper that ticks all the boxes.
Budget: Aftermarket bumpers range in price depending on material, features, and brand. Set a realistic budget and explore options that fit within your range.

In this guide, we'll explore the crucial factors that should influence your decision-making process, ensuring that you find the perfect UTE to meet your specific needs.
Purpose and Usage
When embarking on the journey to find your ideal UTE, it's essential to first understand what a UTE vehicle is and its typical uses. UTE, short for "utility", refers to a vehicle that combines the features of a passenger car with a cargo tray at the rear. These vehicles are renowned for their versatility, making them suitable for a wide range of applications, including transporting goods, towing, and off-road adventures. Understanding your specific purpose for the UTE will serve as a guiding light throughout your search for the perfect vehicle.
Capacity and Payload
Assessing the capacity and payload requirements is paramount when considering a UTE for sale Rockhampton and beyond. Different UTE models offer varying levels of capacity and payload capabilities, with some designed for heavy-duty hauling while others prioritise passenger comfort. It's crucial to match these specifications with your intended usage, ensuring that the UTE can handle the demands of your daily activities without compromise.
Safety Features
Prioritising safety features is non-negotiable when it comes to choosing a UTE. Advanced braking systems, stability control, and airbag configurations are among the key safety features to look out for in potential purchases. These features not only provide peace of mind but also enhance the overall safety of both the driver and passengers, making them indispensable considerations in your UTE shopping journey.
Fuel Efficiency
Fuel efficiency plays a significant role, especially for individuals or businesses that will frequently use the UTE. With the evolution of automotive technology, modern UTE models offer various fuel-efficient technologies to optimise consumption, ultimately reducing operational costs and environmental impact. Understanding these technologies and their impact on your usage patterns will help you make an informed decision.
Towing Capabilities
For those with towing needs, evaluating the towing capabilities of a UTE is crucial. From tow bar configurations to towing capacity and trailer sway control, there are multiple factors to consider to ensure that the UTE can handle your towing requirements with ease and safety. Whether you're towing equipment for work or hitching a trailer for leisure, the UTE's towing capabilities should align with your specific needs.
Comfort and Convenience
Long hours behind the wheel or engaging in work-related activities demand comfort and convenience features in your UTE. Seating comfort, infotainment systems, and storage solutions are among the interior amenities that can significantly enhance your driving experience. Considering these features will not only contribute to your comfort but also enhance productivity during work-related tasks.
Budget Considerations
As with any major purchase, setting a realistic budget is essential when exploring UTEs for sale. While it's tempting to focus solely on features and capabilities, aligning your budget considerations with your desired features without compromising quality is key. By carefully balancing your budget and expectations, you can ensure that your chosen UTE meets both your functional and financial requirements.
Conclusion
In conclusion, shopping for a UTE vehicle involves a multifaceted decision-making process that hinges on understanding your unique needs and preferences. By considering factors such as purpose, capacity, safety, fuel efficiency, towing capabilities, comfort, convenience, and budget, you can confidently navigate the UTE market and find the perfect vehicle for your requirements.

Glass Shard(s)
He follows Will into the bar. Apparently some of the nurses at Med have been talking about it the last couple of days so they’d agreed to give it a try.
Jay kind of likes the lighting and ambience but the real test will be what he thinks of their alcohol.
Will heads to the bathroom and Jay approaches the bar, leaning against the smooth wood. The bartender is busy with another customer and Jay pulls out his phone, checking a text from Hailey.
That’s when he hears a familiar voice behind him.
“You know this can be a win-win situation.” Arthur is saying. “But you have to do your part or it becomes a very disappointing lose-lose.
He’s heard that before but nothing about working with Arthur is beneficial to the other parties involved.
And he’d thought the man was still supposed to be in prison.
He glances into the mirrored wall behind the bar. It’s obscured by stacks of glasses, tumblers and bottles of alcohol but it gives him enough of an advantage.
What is he going to do about this?
He knows exactly what’s happening here but that doesn’t mean he has enough proof to make an arrest. And even if he did, the charges that he could make stick won’t keep the man behind bars for more than a few hours.
More than that, everything he knows from the months that he worked under the man tells him that Arthur doesn’t show up alone when he shakes these places down.
He’s got backup here and unless Jay can pick them out of the crowd, making a move on the man is a bad idea.
But so is staying here and risking Arthur and his cronies recognizing him. He pushes off the bar, stepping toward the restrooms.
“As I live and breathe.” Arthur’s voice stops him in his tracks. “Jay Halstead.”
He turns slowly.
“Arthur.” he grinds out. “I heard you got out. Right back to your old tricks, huh?”
He hadn’t heard actually, though he probably should have. Definitely would have been nice to have some kind of heads up before running into the man off-duty with his brother in tow.
“I’ve got a lot of ground to make up thanks to you.” Arthur says. “Visited serious misfortune on people for a lot less than what you did.”
“You’re on parole, asshole.” Jay growls. “Assault on a police officer violates that and you end up right back in prison for the rest of your sad, miserable life.”
If he could make something stick on extortion it would do the same. Or if he could identify the man’s backup, provided that whoever it is also has a felony conviction on their record.
But he’s been scanning the crowd since he recognized the man and nobody is standing out.
A door opens with a creak and he can’t help but look over, worried that Will is coming back from the bathroom.
He isn’t but Jay pays for the brief moment of distraction, catching a hard blow to the side of the head with something long and thin.
He staggers against the bar, hand coming up to his head as he looks for his attacker.
He’s surprised to see a young woman standing there with a pool cue in hand.
Something shatters over the back of his head and he turns in time for a shoulder driven by a couple hundred pounds of pure muscle to slam into the center of his chest.
He coughs as the air is forced from his lungs and then suddenly he’s airborne.
Will steps out of the restroom just in time to see a walking fridge lift his brother and bodily toss him over the bar.
The sound of shattering glass is nearly deafening and Will steps forward but they aren’t done. A lithe young woman vaults the bar with a pool cue in hand, swinging it down toward his little brother’s head.
“No!” Will shouts, sprinting forward.
The woman starts at his shout, turning along with both men at the bar to face him.
But they’re too slow. Will dives over the bar, tackling the woman away from his brother who’s struggling to get to his feet, blood pouring from everywhere.
He wants to focus his attention in that direction but the woman isn’t giving up that easily and he’s forced to worry about keeping her from going after his brother again rather than figuring out how badly hurt he is.
The woman’s nails are dragging painfully across his skin as he struggles to hold her down, absorbing hits to his back as stomach as she tries to get rid of him.
Jay somehow makes it to his feet at the same time that his other attacker gets around the bar and slams him back against the mirrors.
Somehow in addition to the splintering of the mirror there’s still glass left in the shelves to break.
Jay cries out in pain but still somehow manages to throw a punch, his fist slamming uselessly into the underside of the man’s jaw. That doesn’t stop him and he keeps throwing punches, keeps driving knees into the man’s stomach.
Then shouts of police cut through the bedlam that the bar has become. Will is quickly pulled away from the woman, both of them cuffed and dragged out of the way as multiple officers pile onto the man attacking Jay.
It takes something like fourteen officers to separate the two and even more have to pile on as they get him out from behind the bar.
Will can hear the crackle of tasers being deployed but he can’t pull his gaze away from the bar, away from searching for any sign of his brother.
Jay has sunk back to the ground. Sunk down behind the bar and Will can’t see him, can’t see if he’s okay.
“Worth it to see that fucking pig dead.” a man is shouting as he’s forcibly removed from the bar.
Will ignores him.
“I’m a doctor.” he begs. “He’s my brother. Please just let me help him.”
“Sir, until we can sort out -”
“Get the cuffs off him.” someone cuts off the young rookie. “That’s Will Halstead. He works in the ED at Med.”
It takes seconds for the cuffs to be released from his wrists and he races forward, squeezing past the officers to get to his brother.
Jay is lying on the floor, with his back against the wall.
His entire body; arms, legs, face, torso, and back are covered in lacerations. It’s impossible to tell through the blood how many there are or how deep or long they might be.
Will knows better than to get caught up in that. After a quick scan to make sure that nothing looks like an arterial bleed, he moves on to breathing.
There are a couple of cuts on his brother’s neck but nothing that seems to be compromising respiration. Movement of his brother’s chest suggests broken ribs but there’s one depression in particular that worries him.
Jay’s breathing carries a labored wheeze and Will rests a hand over his brother’s chest.
“W-” Jay gasps, eyes at half mast as he struggles to focus on his brother’s face.
Blood bubbles over his lips.
“Stay with me kiddo.” Will pleads, glancing around behind him.
A paramedic enters and Will zeros on them.
“I’ve got a haemothorax, I need to get a chest tube in now!”
The equipment that EMTs carry isn’t quite the same as what he would use in the ED and he’s definitely wishing for an ultrasound machine as he lines up a scalpel to make an incision.
But the line goes in clean, blood draining from his brother’s pleural cavity.
EMTs start an IV and place an oxygen mask while he works and then they’re getting Jay on a backboard and transferring him onto the stretcher.
Breathing stabilized for the moment, he starts pressing gauze against the most serious bleeding. Which is when he notices the stem of some kind of glass protruding from his brother’s abdomen.
He grabs gauze from an open kit and starts working on stabilizing it. His brother has already lost too much blood, he can’t afford the hemorrhage that will result if it shifts.
The ambulance ride to Med is the longest of his life. They can’t even begin to stem all of the bleeding and Jay’s blood pressure keeps dropping.
Somehow he’s still conscious, unfocused eyes barely open as he stares up at Will. His mouth keeps moving behind the oxygen mask like he’s trying to say something but all Will can hear are garbled, wet breaths.
“Just hang on.” he begs. “You’re going to be okay, Jay. Hang in there, just a little bit longer.”
He stays glued to his brother right up until the moment the stretcher is rolled through the doors into the operating room and then he sinks to the ground.
He can’t lose his little brother.
Especially not like this.
Is his brother really under all of that?
Every inch of his body is wrapped with thick gauze, covering hundreds of stitches. Bandages are heavier over some areas where the skin was shredded so badly that there isn’t anything left to suture.
The chest tube is still in place to drain fluid building up in his chest cavity. He’d been intubated for the lengthy surgery and when it was over and they’d tried to take him off the ventilator he’d been unable to breathe on his own.
Blood transfusions, fluids, antibiotics, pain medication and more are flowing into his brother’s body through several IVs.
He’s being kept sedated for the time being to give him a chance to heal a little bit before he has to deal with the added strain of consciousness.
And Will can appreciate that. As a doctor he knows it’s what’s best for his brother.
As a big brother he just desperately wants to see his little brother’s eyes open, to hear him insist that he’s okay.
There’s a knock at the door frame and he looks up to see Voight at the door.
“How’s he doing?” the man asks.
“Stable.” Will says. “He lost a shit ton of blood. Might have actually broken his record for number of stitches in a single sitting. Broken ribs and a concussion. Haemothorax. His chest cavity filled with blood and it compromised his breathing. The chest tube has to stay until that heals to make sure that he keeps breathing.”
“What about the vent?”
“Standard procedure for surgery.” Will says. “They couldn’t get him off it afterwards. His lungs are just too weak, his body has been through too much. They’ll try again tomorrow.”
Voight nods.
“What the hell happened today?” Will asks. “I went to the bathroom and came back just in time to watch my little brother get chucked over the bar.”
“The case that got Jay into Intelligence.” Voight answers. “He was undercover with a mobster who was shaking down drinking establishments, most notably Molly’s. Wasn’t the cleanest ending but Jay took the bastard down. But our esteemed legal system decided to let him out on parole last week and he immediately went to try to shake down the bar that you and Jay went to tonight. And he wasn’t happy to see the cop that took him down and ruined his entire operation.”
“So this was all revenge?” Will asks.
“He was angry and he snapped.” Voight says. “As simple and as complicated as that.”
“I remember the case.” Will says. “He mentioned the promotion, tried not to talk about how it happened but I always got the vibe that the case that got him there could have gone better. I just… the case was over, the guy was behind bars and I always figured that was that.”
“That’s the trouble with our jobs.” Voight says, shaking his head. “It’s never over. The possibility of one of them coming back to haunt you is always there.”
Will nods.
“I guess it is.”
