Reactions of strangers. When I was a waitress, not much affected me. I had all the same problems as most other waitresses have: complaints about food, complaints about service (not mine, of course!), complaints about the menu, etc. But sometimes I would come back from work quite frustrated or upset,
Customer 1 : ‘You’re from the Philippines, right?
Me: ‘Oh, no I’m not’ (not particularly wanting to continue the conversation)
Customer 1: ‘So you’re from Thailand?
Me: ‘Noo. I’ll just go get your food order’ (me trying to escape)
Then my fellow waitress comes over and says, ‘A customer just asked for a Hawaiian girl, I guess he means you?!’
Customer 2: ‘So are you enjoying your holiday on the Isle of Skye?’
Me: ‘I live here, I actually live right up the road’
This is an example of a person (one of many) who is ignorant. They see me, put me in a stereotype of ‘Asian’ and give me a nationality without even asking. Many people experience this, not just adoptees. In this case, this customer wasn’t malicious in any way but sometimes people can be. I’ve had racial comments shouted at me and the last stranger who asked me where I was from, didn’t believe me. He started shouting at me and all I did was say ‘I am, I am’. And then I walked away.
All I can say, is that it’s hard. It hurts a lot but ignorant people are not worth your time. It helps to just have a good cry! And make sure your loved ones know, because although brushing it off is the easier way to deal with it, these issues can and will consume you.

Working at a restaurant has proven to be extremely stressful, painful, and exhausting. I work eight hour shifts, without eating in between, and am lucky to sit down maybe twice in that time period. My knees and feet constantly hurt and sometimes I have to deal with customers who just drive me up the wall. Yet, here I am over a year later in the same job. Why?
I never thought about it, but waitressing has taught me a lot about having thick skin and learning to adapt to ever day challenges. My first week on the job, I ran outside and cried because a lady yelled at me for bringing her food out the same time her friends' food came out (because she ordered first). Sometimes customers had legitimate reasons to get upset, due to a backed up kitchen or really busy day, but other times it was just them not being kind. Now, I just shrug it off, promise them I will do my best to ensure their positive experience and continue with my duties. Even more so, I've learned a lot about what it's like being on the other side of that table--what it means to treat those who are providing a service. Honestly, everyone should try being in the service industry at least once. Might make the world a better place.
