Lifeguards needed across Tampa Bay ahead of summer season
Tumblr media
BY ANDREA ALVAREZ, CW44 TAMPA BAY CBS NEWS
PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. (Tampa Bay Now) - School is almost out for summer across the bay area which means beaches and pools are soon to see larger crowds. But the American Lifeguard Association has expressed concern over the shortage of lifeguards on duty, which they say has not improved since the shortage hit the lifeguard stands in 2022.
"We haven't had as many lifeguards come out in the last couple of years. There's been incentive to sign on bonus. There's also been an increase in pay," said Wyatt Werneth, a spokesperson for the American Lifeguard Association. Still, recruitment tactics haven't yielded interest.
According to the ALA, the shortage is due to several factors starting with the Covid-19 pandemic, which led to a decrease in the number of people willing to take on lifeguard roles.
"What we say everyday is, 'swim in front of a lifeguard. Your chances of drowning in front of a lifeguard are 1 in 18 million," he said. "With the shortage, some of those areas may close down without lifeguards there which would be tragic. So, it's devastating to the recreation of the beachgoers so we [have] to do everything that we can to make sure that they're there. I mean, the statistics speak for themselves. Lifeguards have a very unique job where we actually have the opportunity to prevent danger before it happens."

How to Choose the Right Lifeguard Company?
If you're looking for a summer activity that's both fun and safe, consider taking up lifeguarding. But before you can enjoy the experience, you need to make sure that the company you choose is reputable and equipped to meet your safety needs. Read this article to learn how to choose the right lifeguard company for you!
summertime is here, and with it comes the possibility of getting into some serious water safety accidents. Make sure you choose the right lifeguard company to watch your back this season! Here are some tips on how to choose the best one for you.
Types of Lifeguard Companies
When searching for the right lifeguard company, it is important to be aware of the different types of companies out there. There are public safety lifeguard companies, private safety lifeguard companies, and hybrid lifeguard companies. Public safety lifeguard companies are typically run by municipalities or states and are responsible for protecting public areas such as beaches and parks. Private safety lifeguard companies are typically run by businesses and protect their own employees and customers. Hybrid lifeguard companies combine aspects of both public and private safety lifeguard companies. They are primarily run by businesses but protect public areas as well.
It is important to choose a lifeguard company that best suits your needs. Each type of company has its own strengths and weaknesses. For example, public safety lifeguards are usually more experienced than private safety guards and are better equipped to deal with chaotic situations. However, they may not be as good at protecting individuals from dangerous water conditions. On the other hand, private safety guards are usually better equipped to deal with dangerous water conditions, but may not have the experience needed to handle chaotic situations. It is important to weigh all of these factors when choosing a lifeguard company.

Lifeguard Diaries
Today I had to deal (indirectly) with an absolute idiot. As lifeguards, we are the act as first aid for the whole Community Center. Yesterday I got called to help a girl who came in from longboarding and needed a band-aid. So I go with my kit  and find the girl in the bathroom with two friends, mascara running down her cheeks and a bloody knee and elbow. No big deal. Gently pat with cool water to get the worst of the dirt off the edges and  tape on gauze so she can walk home where she has more long term supplies. Meanwhile, I’m trying to distract her from the pain, which she claims is really bad. I thought it was just low tolerance. In fact, as it turns out there was a wedding reception going on at the same time, and they had provided a basket of supplies so guests could “freshen up”. Apparently when the girl first came in the cuts didn’t hurt, but a wedding guest who claimed to work in an ER told the girls they should find something with alcohol to use as a disinfectant. So the woman saw the complimentary basket, pulled out some scented body spray, and proceeded to rub it into the scrapes. That was when the pain started. She then informed the girl to ‘not cover the cuts to they could dry properly’. Yes lady, that’s definitely the best idea when the patient has to walk 10 minutes to get home and the cut is still bleeding a bit. Great work. Cause unnecessary pain and give counter productive advice. 10/10.  First Aid Note: As rugged/cool as it seems on TV, do not use alcohol on open wounds unless as a last resort or as directed. Alcohol kills both good and bad tissue, which can increase the recovery time and increases the likely hood of scarring. (why you should use antibiotic cream rather than alcohol on acne, despite the fact that it ‘dries it out’ as my grandmother likes to say) On a minor wound like that it doesn’t do much harm, but just adds unnecessary pain. This is considered common knowledge for pretty much anyone in or around the medical field, if not also in the general population.

Today was just not good.
Surprisingly, work, of all things, made me forget everything. The last 40 minutes it started raining so I went in the water and Jamie had to be on stand since there were still little kids in his section.
I can't wait until this week is over.
