You’ve just Hired the A-Team: Gothic

-You are trying to find the A-Team. The man at the dry-cleaners has sent you to the man at the hot-dog cart who has sent you to the newspaper stand where you purchased yesterday’s paper which told you to see the old homeless man living in an alley behind an Irish pub where you are directed to catch the next bus heading south… how long have you been trying to find the A-team?

-You work at the VA psychiatric inpatient ward and your craziest patient is Captain HM Murdock. How long has Murdock been here? You can’t remember. Murdock can’t remember either, he has intermittent memory loss. Every week a man comes to take Murdock away, he has many names but he is always the same man. You’ve seen his Face a hundred times but still somehow you don’t know who he is.

-You are riding with the A-Team in their van. The car chasing you clips a mailbox and explodes. the mailbox also explodes. A rain of burning post-letters fall from the sky, one lands on a truck parked nearby and the truck explodes. As you speed away you see every car parked up the street blowing up in sequence. The men chasing you climb out of their charred husk of a vehicle onto a blackened rubble-filled street to survey the damage. They each have a small smudge of soot on their cheek. Hannibal lights a cigar.

-Hannibal is on the Jazz again. You ask every member of the team what the Jazz is but none of them can tell you. Hannibal says it’s all going according to plan but he’s never said what the plan was. Was the plan supposed to involve being arrested and making a trebuchet out of meal trays? Was the plan supposed to involve impersonating the CEO of Walmart? Hannibal grins around a cigar in his mouth and you wonder how he got a cigar with his hands tied behind his back. Something behind him explodes and he says I love it when a plan comes together. It’s the Jazz, the rest say. Hannibal, still tied up, lights a cigar.

-BA Baracus is not going to fly. Last week he passed out after drinking a glass of milk and woke up on a plane. The week before that he was bitten by a bug and woke up on a plane. Before that he fell asleep on a bus and woke up on a plane. Before that he was given a pat on the back by Face and woke up on a plane. But today, BA Baracus is not going to fly. He won’t eat anything, he won’t be injected with anything, he will watch his back for swinging two-by-fours, he is not going to fly. He gets in the van to drive but then he closes his eyes… and BA Baracus wakes up on a plane.

-The A-Team is nearly captured by the military police. They escape by feigning death. Again the A-Team is nearly captured by military police. They evade capture by impersonating a mariachi band. The A-Team is nearly captured by military police. They hide out by parking their van in front of a billboard advertising cool looking vans. The A-Team is nearly captured by military police. Hannibal lights a cigar and the smoke sets off the fire suppression system, in the chaos they escape. The A-Team is nearly captured by military police…

Okay.

I have not seen ROTTMNT yet, but I've picked up some stuff from just floating around the fandom. Something I've learned, which is discussed in this post here, is that Rise Leo is generally considered - and considers himself the 'Face Man' of the team. (GIFs below are swiped from the linked post by @risestarkiss - I couldn't find them in tumblr's gif search function...)

Anyway. This is interesting to me because I am, for my sins, also a fan of The A-Team.

(I promise this is going somewhere! If you want to find out where I'm going with this, I'll put the rest of the post under a cut because it got a little long...)

For those of you unfamiliar with The A-Team, it's a (very silly) 80s TV series about a group of Vietnam War veterans who are on the run from the government after being convicted of a crime they didn't commit. The four of them spend their lives in hiding, making a living by using their combat skills to help people in need.

Here they are:

Left: Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith, leader of the team, brains of the outfit and most likely to have become an evil mastermind in an alternate timeline.

Right: Sergeant B.A. Baracus. Nicknamed 'Bad Attitude' due to his lack of patience for bullshit, B.A. is the resident tough guy but also an absolute teddy bear of a man, and is always ready to help people, especially children and the elderly.

Left: Captain H.M. 'Howling Mad' Murdock is the team's pilot and can fly just about anything. As his nickname suggests, he's considered a bit eccentric and is a silly kind of guy. (He's also a permanent resident of a psychiatric hospital but let's not get into that right now.)

Right: Lieutenant Templeton Peck. His role in the team is to provide them with whatever they need, whether that be vehicles, weapons, tools or access to places. He usually achieves this using his charm and wit, gaining him the nickname 'Face Man.'

Okay, so bearing these descriptions in mind, look at Leo's dialogue in this GIF:

I'm assuming that Donnie is the brainy guy, Raph is the smashy guy, and Mikey is the 'eats peanut butter with his fingers guy'. And Leo is the Face Man. That's his role.

But these descriptions fit the members of The A-Team too. Hannibal is the brainy guy, B.A. is the smashy guy, Murdock is the guy who absolutely eats peanut butter with his fingers (while maintaining unbroken eye contact throughout). And then there's Face.

How is this in any way relevant?

Well.

It just so happens that someone else is a fan of The A-Team...

Of course the Mirage turtles watched The A-Team! It was a popular show in the mid-80s, and you have to admit - they do have a lot in common, being four guys fighting injustice from the shadows and all... The A-Team even have a friend on the outside who helps them out - Amy Allen.

She's a reporter. Like someone else we know...

But which of the Mirage turtles in the image above is suggesting they should watch The A-Team?

According to this bio card from 1990 that coincides with the 1987 series...

... it might be Leo!

Was this intentional on the part of the Rise writers? I don't know!

Is it relevant? Probably not!

Does this tentative link between these two silly 80s series make me ridiculously happy? Yes!

Was this entire post just leading up to this? Yeah... sorry...

I like to think that the link is intentional. I've heard that Rise makes reference to other iterations of TMNT, as they all do. I would just personally love it if someone on the team wanted to draw parallels between these two series on purpose!

Anyway.

It's literally because Murdock likes to stand waaay to close to people and Face is so used to it ge doesn't move away. I love how many things Face just let's Murdock do around him. Even when he's being super annoying.

Examples:

Lack of personal space.

Murdock standing close enough to get hit in the face.

The two of them reaching out to each other. This was not a good day for them.

Literally Face putting up with an over grown child.

Murdock attacking BA with kisses because he's so happy to see him.

Murdock has zero understanding of personal space. He also shows affection in a very physical way. Face just tolerates a lot more that BA does.

Can someone explain to me why Face need to be so ridiculously close to Murdock in every single episode?

Modern A-Team Casting??

I've recently dragged my friend, @rightasrainee, into the A-Team hole, and we've been talking about what a modern A-Team that actually cares would look like. So far, we've got a few ideas for the main team... Presenting:

Anson Mount as Colonel John "Hannibal" Smith.

Michael B. Jordan as Corporal Bosco "B.A." Baracus.

Rege-Jean Page as Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck.

And, lastly...

Kate McKinnon as Captain H.M. "Howlin' Mad" Murdock.

I certainly like our choices, but I'd love to hear anyone else's fantasy casting!

Additionally, astute observers will notice we're missing a certain roving reporter... anyone have any suggestions?

Lieutenant Templeton ‘Face Man’ Peck

Face speaks multiple languages, with Spanish, French, and Vietnamese being the three he is most fluent in. However, he also speaks a decent amount of German, has picked up a dash of Korean from Hannibal and the Lee family, some Mandarin from Sam, a smidge of Arabic and several African languages from random jobs, a few regional dialects useless outside of Vietnam, and a surprising amount of Irish from Fathers Magill and O’Malley, One of the most niche language he speaks and reads, however, is Latin. When he was eleven, the priests were trying to think up ways to keep him out of trouble over summer break, and made him learn Latin. In the long run, it earned him detention in high school when he got caught translating profane graffiti from Ancient Rome to the great amusement of the other guys on the football team.

Sargent BA Baracus

BA’s dad Albert died while BA was between tours in Vietnam. He had already signed up for his second tour, and had gone home to Chicago for his month’s leave. While staying with his parents, Albert suffered a fatal heart attack, leaving BA and his mother alone in the world. If BA had not already signed on for a second tour, he would have stayed in Chicago to take care of his mother. He knew his team would understand why he could not return. The US government was not nearly so understanding, though, so he promised his mother he would return home for good as soon as he was free. At the time it was only supposed to be about thirteen months. It ended up taking BA a lot longer.

Doctor (Captain) Maggie ‘Mo’ Sullivan

Maggie almost hooked up with Decker when they were both young, and serving in Korea. At the time, Decker and Hannibal were still friends, and had taken leave in Seoul together. Maggie and a couple of her fellow nurses were also on leave. While Hannibal spent most of his time focused on Maggie’s friend Julia, Maggie herself spent a lot of time with Decker over the weekend. Despite a few opportunities, they never went too far since Maggie had a doctor she was seeing seriously back at her camp, and she did not want a fling to jinx a chance at matrimony. She still has a photo of that weekend tucked away in one of her memorabilia boxes.    

Doctor Kelly Stevens

The house Kelly is using as her home and office is her old family home. While her four sisters moved out and into large urban areas, Kelly inherited her father’s old veterinary practice that he ran out of their home for years. She also inherited most of her father’s patients, who are happy to see that the new Doctor Stevens has her father’s touch with all kinds of animals, and she never balks at anything from family pets to farm animals to abandoned litters of wild creatures that people leave on her front porch. While her sisters sometimes encourage her to move her practice into an urban area, Kelly cannot imagine leaving behind the challenges and joys that come with a rural practice.

Michael Knight

Long before he was Michael Knight, Michael Long also smoothed his life’s path with his smile and witty quips. Even back in grade school, he was famous for the excuses he pulled out to explain missing and uncompleted homework. Something as basic as ‘the dog ate my homework’ was not good enough for him—and some teachers let him slide on it just because they got so much amusement from his tales of aliens invading the kitchen and stealing his math book to plot the calculations they would need to enter the atmosphere safely. While most teachers were not as forgiving, a few of them saw the humor in his antics.

Murphy Michales

Murphy actually has an Irish/UK mashed-up accent. It is the product of both his parents being immigrants—his mother comes from outside of Galway and his dad hails from Manchester. His older brothers taught him how to master an American accent before he entered school so he would not be teased, but his natural accent still emerges occasionally. Mostly it happens around family—especially his parents and his English grandmother. It also happens around other people from the United Kingdom/Ireland if he is comfortable talking with them. The only reason it never happened around Steele is because he was never happy to be around the other man, so never relaxed enough to settle into his natural accent.

Elaine Grazzo

Elaine grew up in a family who valued the appearance of wealth above everything else. Her parents were very proud of their upper middle-class house, and the fact they had a membership at the country club was a bragging point for years. Elaine is not nearly as image and class focused as her parents, but mental scars from her upbringing linger on. Namely, she was always told she would never amount to anything if she did not snag a rich guy, so trying to make a life on her own terms is a rather overwhelming endeavor for her sometimes.

Officer James “Jim” Street

Street is the undisputed ‘mom friend’ of the younger guys on the SWAT team. Though he’s the middle in terms of age, being an only child left him quite mature, so he often acts a bit older than TJ and Dom. He is usually the one who reminds his teammates (mainly Dom) that they must drink water too, and not just coffee. He enforces light-duty rules as needed, always has snacks in a desk drawer that he hands out as needed, and tries to remind his friends to do paperwork before bolting out of the office for the night.

Officer James ‘Jim” Reed

Though they stay locked up in his locker while on duty, Reed is the kind of guy who keeps a wallet-full of photos of Jeanie and Jimmy Jr. He loves his wife and son—they are the light of his life, and he makes sure every guy in his unit knows about them. When cynical officers comment that it’ll only be a matter of time before he has an affair too, Reed takes particular insult. He is not the kind of man to treat his wife as a transitory relationship, and can’t stand officers who assume affairs and infidelities are a natural part of their career path.

Eyeing his painful leg and the sharp angle his foot was bent at, Theodore had to agree with the man. He grit his teeth while sweat started beading on his face and tried to breath normally.

An absent thought swam through the young lieutenant’s mind that his boots were likely ruined, he’d have to cut the leather to get it off. Wouldn’t he look so funny trying to hobble around with only the one boot. Theodore chuckled despite himself and it became rather obvious that his ankle wasn’t the only injury as the pupils of his eyes were mismatched and nausea built up.

Theodore let his head fall back to rest. “Oh? The ship’s still there?” He chuckled, “I really thought it would break up, you know?”
