Prehistoric ancestor of the corn chip
Hey geology guys
Why?
#at first glance without knowing the area or seeing the rock up close#I'd say either a xenolith or an odd pattern of weathering#more likely weathering given the shape of the rock#actually probably liesegang rings broken off at an odd angle

sandstone at Maitland Bay by Peter Woodard Via Flickr: Terrigal Formation sandstone from the Triassic at Maitland Bay beach. On the other side of the Hawkesbury, the corresponding rocks are Newport Formation sandstone. Above them both, the Hawkesbury sandstone, all from the Triassic. Siderite is the mineral causing the colouration in these rocks, (FeCO3). I'd hoped my teenage companion would model for me in front of these rocks, but she declined.

Liesegang rings
The concentric rings are referred to as Liesegang rings/bands, which is a common feature in the weathered rocks. The rock has to be weathered for these bands form as it will free up the iron from minerals in the rock and allow water to travel through it. Once water soaks through the rock and picks up the iron it will redistribute and oxidise it forming bands like these of iron oxide.
Places where rock is unbroken the artistic Liesegang bands are formed and where there are cracks (joints), the iron oxide will concentrate along them. Hence, why we can see both, the irregular banding and straight-lined weathering features
Example from Gerringong, Australia

Webbed matrix of Iron concretions formed a very wavy Liesegang banding deposit, over time upwelling of air from this wet section of Red River Gorge let the sandstone weather to begin exposing the banding. As water also found its way through the rock, taking the path of least resistance, these holes became more pronounced leading to what you see in this image.
Much of the banding you see at Red River Gorge and other area’s where sandstone forms with sea bed cross bedding will take on many different patterns of Iron oxide Liesegang rings/banding In ways similar to this.
Red River Gorge specifically has one member that holds the largest amount of banding. This Member is the Corbin member, part of the Pennsylvanian Lee formation.
Normal banding progresses in more ring patterns or liniar strata as cross bedding occurs.

A closer look at the exposed roof as one solid layer.

From Earth Science Picture of the Day; February 21, 2017:
Liesegang Phenomenon in a Granite Panel Photographer and Summary Author: Dale Chadwick
This photo of a granite panel (left photo) in a walk-in shower appears to demonstrate the Liesegang phenomenon. This phenomenon was described more than a century ago and was of intense interest to scientists in many different fields early in the 20th century. Note the dark area across the bottom of the left image, a xenolith, about 6 in (15 cm) across, just above the tiling. Above this area, there are at least three linear arcs that are slightly darker than their background. They're roughly marked on the photo at right. Some of the molecules from the darker area must have diffused into the granite while it was in a molten state and reacted with it to form the arcs or rings. The panel used in the shower was cut out from a piece of granite containing a much larger diffusion region. Photo taken on January 11, 2017.
