Once in a blue moon, I reminisce on this nostalgic favourite from a time I can scarcely recall now. I rewatched it a while back, and while it is too melodramatic and sappy for my tastes now, the reasons remain for the whys-of-love for this movie.
There was redemption, there was agency and there was a happy ending in the truest sense of the word, coming to terms with one’s choices and moving forward with those choices. Healing.
All those elements are still what I look for in my fiction now.
The attraction was too dangerous and all consuming, not at all realistic for a healthy long term relationship, but the ending was so hopeful about the feelings/dreams-of-possibilities these two ‘strangers’ still haboured for each other years after the fact, and how much they had changed in the intervening years that when the ending came, as abrupt as it seemed, you truly do believe that this time, they had a good shot of making something out of that compelling attraction they had felt all those years ago. I could not ask for more from a (melo)ROMANCE, truly.
(Although this was less a romance than the story of love redeeming a “bad boy” and the broken relationship between a father and son, and how that was mended).
So did I think the movie successfully achieved what it wanted to convey despite the melodrama and cringe? YES.
Not saying that they executed the narrative and emotional beats brilliantly because the movie was choppy and overly dramatic in many of its emotional moments, but the narrative big picture came true well in my estimation, and for that I could still attempt a rewatch now and remember why I loved and rewatched the movie so many times decades prior. Little to complain with regards to toxicity or problematic representations of love/attraction because it was already sort of addressed by the movie itself. The main love protagonist was not a nice or good man, and until and unless he redeemed himself, their love/attraction could not bear fruit. Would this be a problem for some viewers? Maybe. But I love redemption in my stories/fiction, so it worked for me, at least.
It is wonderful when one can look back at an old favourite and still fondly consider it a favourite. (Or an indictment that one has not matured/grown up much. Whichever fits 😜🤪😆)

I recently found out from this episode of the Rosie ‘O Donnel show that Kathleen Turner was supposed to voice and sing as Zira in The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride.
And now I cannot unhear Zira singing My Lullaby in Jessica Rabbit’s voice:

Good question:
Tumblr media
In the United States, many jails and prisons can and will charge you money for every single night that you spend imprisoned, for the entire duration of your incarceration, as if you were being billed for staying at a hotel. Even if you are incarcerated for years. Adding up to tens of thousands of dollars. What happens when you’re released?
In response to this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
So.
You’re getting charged, like, ten dollars every time you even submit a request form to possibly be seen by a doctor or dentist.
You’re getting charged maybe five dollars for ten minutes on the phone.
Any time a friend or family tries to send you like five dollars so that you can buy some toothpaste or lotion, or maybe a snack from the commissary since you’re diabetic and the “meals” have left you malnourished, maybe half of that money gets taken as a “service fee” by the corporate contractor that the prison uses to manage your pre-paid debit card. So you’re already losing money every day just by being there.
What happens if you can’t pay?
In some places, after serving just a couple of years for drugs charges, almost 20 years after being released, the state can still hunt you down for over $80,000 that you “owe” as if it were a per-night room-and-board accommodations charge, like this recent highly-publicized case in Connecticut:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Excerpt:
Two decades after her release from prison, [TB] feels she is still being punished. When her mother died two years ago, the state of Connecticut put a lien on the Stamford home she and her siblings inherited. It said she owed $83,762 to cover the cost of her 2 1/2 year imprisonment for drug crimes. [...] “I’m about to be homeless,” said [TB], 58, who in March [2022] became the lead plaintiff in a lawsuit challenging the state law that charges prisoners $249 a day for the cost of their incarceration. [...] All but two states have so-called “pay-to-stay” laws that make prisoners pay for their time behind bars [...]. Critics say it’s an unfair second penalty that hinders rehabilitation by putting former inmates in debt for life. Efforts have been underway in some places to scale back or eliminate such policies. Two states — Illinois and New Hampshire — have repealed their laws since 2019. [...] Pay-to-stay laws were put into place in many areas during the tough-on-crime era of the 1980s and ’90s, said Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology at University of Southern California who is leading a study of the practice. [...] Connecticut used to collect prison debt by attaching an automatic lien to every inmate, claiming half of any financial windfall they might receive for up to 20 years after they are released from prison [...].

Look at this:
To help her son, Cindy started depositing between $50 to $100 a week into Matthew’s account, money he could use to buy food from the prison commissary, such as packaged ramen noodles, cookies, or peanut butter and jelly to make sandwiches. Cindy said sending that money wasn’t necessarily an expense she could afford. “No one can,” she said. So far in the past month, she estimates she sent Matthew close to $300. But in reality, he only received half of that amount. The balance goes straight to the prison to pay off the $1,000 in “rent” that the prison charged Matthew for his prior incarceration. [...] A PA Post examination of six county budgets (Crawford, Dauphin, Lebanon, Lehigh, Venango and Indiana) showed that those counties’ prisons have collected more than $15 million from inmates — almost half is for daily room and board fees that are meant to cover at least a portion of the costs with housing and food. Prisoners who don’t work are still expected to pay. If they don’t, their bills are sent to collections agencies, which can report the debts to credit bureaus. [...] Between 2014 and 2017, the Indiana County Prison — which has an average inmate population of 87 people — collected nearly $3 million from its prisoners. In the past five years, Lebanon’s jail collected just over $2 million in housing and processing fees.

Pay-to-stay, the practice of charging people to pay for their own jail or prison confinement, is being enforced unfairly by using criminal, civil and administrative law, according to a new Rutgers University-New Brunswick led study. The study [...] finds that charging pay-to-stay fees is triggered by criminal justice contact but possible due to the co-opting of civil and administrative institutions, like social service agencies and state treasuries that oversee benefits, which are outside the realm of criminal justice. “A person can be charged $20 to $80 a day for their incarceration,” said author Brittany Friedman, an assistant professor of sociology and a faculty affiliate of Rutgers' criminal justice program. “That per diem rate can lead to hundreds of thousands of dollars in fees when a person gets out of prison. To recoup fees, states use civil means such as lawsuits and wage garnishment against currently and formerly incarcerated people, and regularly use administrative means such as seizing employment pensions, tax refunds and public benefits to satisfy the debt.” [...] Civil penalties are enacted on family members if the defendant cannot pay and in states such as Florida, Nevada and Idaho can occur even after the original defendant is deceased. [...]
Text by: Megan Schumann. “States Unfairly Burdening Incarcerated People With “Pay-to-Stay” Fees.” Rutgers press release. 20 November 2020.
---
So, to pay for your own imprisonment, states can:
-- hunt you down for decades (track you down 20 years later, charge you tens of thousands of dollars, and take your house away)
-- put a lien on your vehicle, house
-- garnish your paycheck/wages
-- seize your tax refund
-- send collections agencies after you
-- take your public assistance benefits
-- sue you in civil court
-- take money from your family even after you’re dead

An Arc’s Revenge
Juniper: So… Let me get this straight… There’s a kid at school named, Cardin Winchester?
Jaune: Yes.
Juniper: And, this kid tends to bully you at school.
Jaune: Among others, but it’s mostly him.
Juniper: And, he’s been bullying you by knocking your stuff over, shoving you around, and general blackmail you into doing his school work.
Jaune: He also shoved me into a rocket launcher, and sent me flying.
Juniper: H-He did what?! Okay, no… let’s, let’s just put that on the back burner for now.
Jaune: Okay.
Juniper: So, you decided to come up with a plan to get revenge on, Cardin for all the things he has done to you. Now, instead of coming up with some elaborate prank that would totally humiliate him. You decided to go the opposite route… and, fuck his mother?!
Jaune: Yeah, pretty much.
Juniper: Why the hell would you do that?!
Jaune: Well, at first at went to, Carla…?!
Juniper: Mrs. Winchester! You are not getting on any friendly ground with her bucko!
Jaune: Okay… I went to, Ms. Winchester, and asked her if she could give me any information on, Cardin. What are his biggest fears, secrets he doesn’t want exposed, things like that. She understood I wanted to get revenge for all of his bullying. But, then, Ms. Winchester purposed a plan that would really upset, Cardin.
Jaune: That I fuck her.
Juniper: Wait! This was her plan?!
Jaune: Yep. Apparently she wanted to teach, Cardin a lesson too, and she thought, ‘What better revenge can a guy get, than fucking his bully’s mom.’
Juniper: Are you kidding me?! That seriously can’t be the reason behind why she slept with you?!
Jaune: Well, she also mentioned some things about… a dry spell, sexy blonds. And, something else afterwards about being sexually satisfied? I wasn’t sure what she meant by that.
Juniper: Good gods! Okay, I’m going to have a word with, Ms. Winchester. Acheius, you go talk to your son I… oh gods…
Acheius: Jaune, I can’t believe you would do something so childish!
Acheius: Nice job out there son! That’s a pretty dame you bagged out there!
Jaune: Ehhh… What?
Acheius: And, with a woman twice your age too!
Acheius: Juniper actually wanted me to bang her to get back at the husband for what she said to, Juni. He died before I could.
Jaune: Mom wanted you to do what now…?
Acheius: I can’t believe that my son would stoop to something so low, and depraved! Didn’t I teach you better?!
Acheius: Your mom would have done it herself, but she was pregnant at the time.
Jaune: You didn’t teach me any…?! Wait, Mom would have done it?!
Acheius: I can’t believe my son would do such a thing… I am so disappointed in you…
Acheius: I’m so proud of you! Here’s 200 Lien, treat the lady to a nice dinner!
Jaune: Okay…?
Acheius: You are ground for a week… No! A…?!
Juniper: Jauney~!
Acheius: Uh oh…
Jaune: Y-Yes?
Juniper: After much consideration, and discussion with, Carla. I approve of your relationship with her.
Jaune: You do?
Acheius: Beg pardon?
Juniper: Yes, Carla is a kind, and caring widow who is searching for a lover to share her life with, and we both agree that you are that man!
Jaune: Okay…?
Juniper: So you two go on, and have a wonderful time together, okay dear?
Jaune: What the hell is going on…?
Juniper: Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to have a world with my new BFF~!
Jaune: ‘BFF?’
Jaune: Dad… What the fuck just happened?
Acheius: I have no idea… One moment she’s screaming at you for bedding a woman twice your age, now she getting all buddy, buddy with her; I haven’t the faintest clue what just happened.
Juniper: Oh, Jaune?
Jaune: Yeah?
Juniper: Remember: If you use a condom your pee-pee will fall off! Okay? Bye~!
JA: …?
JA: Ohhhhhhhh…
Jaune: That certainly explains the 180 she just performed.
Acheius: Yeah. Your mother has always had a thing for babies…
Jaune: I know…
Jaune: She’ll kill me if I don’t knock, Carla up within the month won’t she?
Acheius: Maine you at worst.
Jaune: Shit…

At Uncle Luca's Pawn Shop
Uncle Luca: Okay Jaune, I'll leave the business to you for a few hours. Don't do anything your mother wouldn't do, because I would. HAHAhAHa! See you soon!
Jaune: Bye Uncle... *Sighs* My first day and he already leaves me alone in the store. Great.
He says sarcastically.
Hours pass and finally a customer arrives.
*Ting!* The front door opens.
Jaune: Finally, a client.
Jaune turns around and sees a lady with a small child walking towards the counter.
Jaune: Hello ma'am, how can I help you?
Mother: I've come to pawn my son.
Jaune: You what? Ma'am, you can't pawn children.
Mother: His name is Patricio.
Patricio: *Looks at Jaune* Help, they're going to pawn me.
Jaune: Be strong, Patricio.
Mother: How much do you offer?
Jaune: Ma'am, we only receive valuable items.
Patricio: *Upset* What are you implying?
Jaune: I mean, we don't accept children.
Mother: But this is not a child.
Jaune: So what is it?
Mother: It's a guitar
Jaune: Ma'am...
Mother: Sing Patricio, sing.
Patricio: 🎶Stay with me, 真夜中のドアをたたき🎶
Mother: Like a guitar, you silly boy
Patricio: OH!... Chaka! Chaka! Chaka! Jam! Jam! Chaka! Chan!
Jaune: Awesome?
Mother: So how much do you give me for the drum?
Jaune: Didn't you say it was a guitar?
Mother: Do your thing, son.
Patricio: *Start Beatboxing*
Jaune: Wow... Incredible.
Mother: How much do you offer me then?
Jaune: *Joking* $100 lien.
Mother: How dare you!
Jaune: Excuse me?
Mother: Did you propose to buy my son?!
Jaune: No, I just…!
Mother: You should be ashamed! I would never sell my son!
Patricio: Mom, I pooped my pants.
Mother: Would the payment be in cash?
Jaune: Ma'am, get out of my shop.
