For this week’s movie, I was between this one and Snake Eyes, which was free on YouTube at the time of the writing of this post. I’d had vague interest in seeing both films, but not being a super fan of either Mario or G.I. Joe, I hadn’t gotten around to either of them. I’d heard more positive things about Super Mario Bros. than Snake Eyes, so I went with the former.
So! Super Mario Bros! Here we go!
Mario and Luigi are brothers and Brooklyn plumbers struggling to start their own business. Somehow, they get transported to another world; but while Mario goes to the Mushroom Kingdom, Luigi lands in Bowser’s realm and quickly gets captured. Upon finding out what happened to his brother, Mario begs the Mushroom Kingdom’s leader, Princess Peach, to help rescue Luigi. Though she’s sympathetic, facing Bowser (who is coming to invade) requires fighting skills and an army, and even then it’ll be no easy task.
Most of the Discourse around the movie that I saw revolved around the voice acting, especially Chris Pratt as Mario. I had my own doubts when it was announced–I did not think he could do an Italian accent. In truth, doing a voice like Mario has in the games would probably be seen as offensive by someone, or too ridiculous to take seriously by others. I don’t think that Pratt’s voice acting here is bad; at the same time, I really don’t think it’s great either, and it’s obvious that him being a big name star is the only reason he was picked. He can do a good voice performance, The LEGO Movie proves that; I think selecting someone else would have fit better.
The same with Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. He’s not bad, and there are moments where he’s actually great, but overall it feels like a miscast because they thought people would like it better if a famous star was Donkey Kong instead of someone who fit the role.
Cranky Kong was mostly awful, though. His voice just sounds all wrong whenever he speaks. He’s not even voiced by a big-name celebrity (it’s Fred Armisen), and somehow I found his lines the worst in the movie. How is this possible?
As many predicted, Jack Black as Bowser is wonderful. He’s a shining star in this film. He’s clearly having a ball with the role. Black would not have been my first choice for voicing this character, but he does such a great job at doing such a ridiculous and over-the-top villain who relishes in wrecking kingdoms, I would gladly overcome any reservations I have about the movie just to see more of him in this role.
Peach is fine, mostly? There were times in this movie that I wondered why Princess Peach isn’t the one doing everything. I don’t know why she’s selected Mario to be her champion when she’s much more capable on her own. Why isn’t she the one fighting Donkey Kong? Well, because Mario vs. Donkey Kong is A Thing, yeah, though in-universe I can’t figure why it’s done as she’s a much better fighter. That being said, the climax of the movie has her and Mario separated, and her actions make sense in-universe.
Toad is… kind of there.
I won’t lie, though–the final battle is loads of fun. I found myself thinking that if the rest of the movie had this sort of energy all the way through, I’d be having a lot more fun. I don’t know that Mario and Luigi’s character arcs are slam dunks the way they should be, but then again I don’t know how true this is to the game personalities.
There are licensed musical choices I didn’t quite like so much? None of them are bad songs, I just don’t know if so many of them belonged here. It reminded me of Ayers’s Suicide Squad, though thankfully it was nowhere near as bad as using it every few minutes. TV Tropes claims that the licensed songs were originally placeholders, then the makers decided it fit the movie’s scenes well enough to keep. I don’t know if I agree! It sounded more like the director or the producers thought the only way to keep some older audience members interested was through putting songs like “Thunderstruck” in the soundtrack.
The movie is fine, I remembered thinking about halfway through. It’s good, I guess, and I didn’t find anything overtly wrong with it. I didn’t find anything I really loved about it, either, other than Jack Black’s performance. The bits that were obvious references to gameplay in the Mario games were cool. Besides that? Eh. It didn’t feel memorable, it felt like a pretty by-the-numbers animated family film, with forgettable jokes and dialogue. The world is colorful and pretty to look at, at least?
I don’t know. Maybe if I was a fan of the Super Mario games there’s something I wouldn’t miss, or I’d have something in this movie I’d love more. But I don’t. If you’re a fan of the games you will probably have a lot to look forward to here. Otherwise, I think it’s mostly a movie that you can skip. You’d have some fun, though it’s hardly a must-watch.

Juliano is fucked.
Well, he's been fucked several different ways lately, but this is wildly different. He's conversing with Mario at the moment, and he knows that the Avatar can tell there's something wrong.
All of the Avatars have seemed to notice, unfortunately. It's been so long since Juliano himself was an Avatar, that he forgot that observantness didn't just disappear. It was.. hidden.
He knows they're not saying anything because they don't know what to say, because they don't know what he's afflicted with.
Well, Juliano thinks Mario has a hunch about what he's afflicted with, with how he looks between SMG1 and SMG2 whenever they visit, and then how he looks at Juliano with his eyes slightly narrowed.
"SHANTAE SPRAYED ME WITH WATER!" Tulip shrieks as she runs past, her friend close behind.
"YOU'RE COVERED IN CAR OIL! COME HERE!" Shantae shouts, voice exasperated.
"Where in the world do they find the energy?" Juliano mutters playfully, shaking his head.
"Maybe if you stopped sleeping in all the time, poppop." Mario grins.
"I'm 37.." Juliano sighs, exasperated but smiling.
"Oooold!" the other chuckles.
The former Avatar shakes his head with a smile, leaning a bit on his staff. His body wasn't hurting too much, but there was a dull ache of pain. Nothing he hadn't grown used to, however.
"How come we're not.. doing anything today?" Mario raises a brow.
Juliano shrugs. "I think it'd be nice if everyone just had some time to unwind, that's all."
The plumber stares at the former ringmaster for a moment before nodding. "Right.."
The taller of the two straightens up and cracks his neck before twirling his staff. "Hmm.. we should get going. I need to see Vitality soon, and I'd rather you guys not get caught up in Swag again."
Maybe that was a good thing, because.. he started to feel a little hot. Juliano frowns and tugs at the collar of his shirt a bit.
As the two continued to talk and discuss, the rest of the Avatars joined in. The large group began to walk and talk in a field near the castle. Juliano never strayed too far with them, not after the incident with the Teen Squad.
That reminded him..
"Tulip, has your driver's license been reinstated?" Juliano asks, looking at the young teen. She pauses before tilting her head.
"Uh, no? They said it was expired or something and that I need to get a new one." She shakes her head.
"..how long ago was that?" Both he and Captian Olimar narrow their eyes.
"... yes." Tulip grins.
As the girl shrinks back from being chastised, Juliano exhales softly, placing a hand to his forehead. Hell, when did it get so hot?
"Hey, Juliano?" a hand is on his shoulder, and he glances to the side, seeing a concerned Ash. "You okay? Your face is redder than your coat.."
"I'm probably coming down with something." Juliano admits, weakly pushing Ash's hand off of his shoulder. "It's.." He exhales, feeling his heart beat faster. "I'm.. fine."
Concern grows on Ash's face. He instead turns to the rest of the Avatars who were ahead, as he and Juliano had stopped. "Hey, guys? I think something is wrong with Jul. He's getting really red!"
"'M.. 'm fine.." Juliano mutters as he stumbles a bit, body beginning to shake. "I.. I can.."
"Juliano? Jul, can you see how many fingers I'm holding up?" There's hands on his shoulders, keeping him steady, and a voice he thinks is Mario's speaks to him, laced with so much concern.
His eyes narrow as he looks down, head swimming and vision blurring.
He opens his mouth to respond, thinking its four.. when his damned scars flare up too horribly for him to repress. He drops his staff, and how quickly he falls to his knees stops whoever was keeping him steady from catching him.
Juliano trembles like a leaf, unable to hear the worried and panicked questions surrounding him. It feels like he's underwater, his body is both burning and freezing, and he hurts, and he wants it to stop. The missing texture patches pulse, and he's in searing pain.
It hurt. It hurts. And yet, he couldn't make a noise because of the pain.
His code wanted to go home.
Juliano's head continues to swim before he passes out, falling to the ground.

The Super Mario Movie is an Entertaining Speedrun
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a highly anticipated animated filmed made by Illumination and backed by Nintendo themselves in order to prevent another Super Mario Bros. 1993 film disaster from keeping them from bringing their IPs to the big screen. Initial reactions were mixed on the casting, from negatives (Mario) to positives (Bowser), but upon watching the film in my local theatre, I’d say Chris Pratt was fine, even with the tease with the iconic falsetto tone near the beginning of the film with the commercial. Jack Black on the other hand, absolutely kills it as Bowser, even gets his own musical number.
The pacing of the movie is--as I said--basically a speedrun beginning from the journey to the Mushroom Kingdom with barely any breathing room for the characters to interact. Mario barely just met Princess Peach and the two were already fast friends throughout the film. On the other end of the spectrum, Donkey Kong and Mario’s rivalry is a bit natural as they occasionally butt heads at each other while not stomping Bowser’s troops. Luigi, I feel that he could do a little more in the film, being stuck in the cage in Bowser’s castle for 1/3rd of the movie’s runtime before having his big moment with Mario near the end of the film. It’s a shame, but Charlie Day is a great Luigi.
The beginning of the film does a good job portraying the Mario Bros.’s humble beginnings as plumbers in Brooklyn, NY, and showing their brief relationship with their family. It does touch up upon Peach’s origin, seeing that she’s not a native of the Mushroom Kingdom, but my biggest gripes about it is the absence of Toadsworth, Peach’s longtime caretaker, debuting in Super Mario Sunshine. I get that Toadsworth hasn’t been in any appearances in future Mario games as of late, but the best Nintendo and Miyamoto could do is at least remember him. The second oddity of the film is the relationship of Mario and the Kongs--namely Cranky Kong. As you know in the games, Cranky Kong is the Donkey Kong who Mario (as Jumpman at the time) fought to rescue Pauline--who makes a brief cameo in the film--during his time as a carpenter. Cranky in the movie does not recognize Mario, either he is senile, or a different Jumpman fought him and the current Donkey Kong as the film established DK as his son.
The visuals for the movie is what I expected for a big budget animated film by Illumination: stunning, with a lot of visual easter eggs only hardcore Nintendo fans will get, me included. However, the use of slo-mo in some part of the action can be a bit overdone and break the immersion.
Finally, the music. Overall, you can hear familiar Mario tunes throughout the movie arranged and orchestrated to fit the mood of certain scenes. However, there are also some licensed music that I feel are unnecessary as the familiar video game tunes are fine enough by themselves.
All in all, my final score for the Super Mario Bros. Movie is a 7.5/10. Sure, the pacing is not for everyone, and not everyone who isn’t a gamer will get the references, but it’s does what it do as an entertaining kids movie. I don’t expect it to be a total blockbuster and win critic’s heart, but as a Nintendo fan since childhood, I loved every second of it.

Let me tell you some things about American plumbers probably almost none of you know, especially because I've seen people complaining that plumbers make "$42 an hour while I can't even make $15!"
[Note that much of this is state-specific, so ymmv, but most states have an interest in keeping it pretty similar to what I'm going to outline.]
First of all, you have to be licensed, and anything licensed takes forever and costs a fortune. You spend 7 years as an apprentice plumber, which means taking full-time classes on top of full-time work, for which you definitely do not get paid $42 an hour, and you're lucky if you get $20. You're on the hook for all of the tuition and books and whatever else, tools and whatnot, and we all know tuition and books are out of control, but have you seen what decent tools cost these days? This in addition to all of the regular school stuff like a computer, an internet connection, probably a mobile phone of some description, etc. Some you may have already and some you may not.
That's just the education part. Next, even after you've completed your 7 year apprenticeship under extremely strict and exacting standards, for which you get paid almost nothing and have tons of expenses just like any other student, you're still under some kind of supervision for another few years. So you've put in about 10 years into this already and you're nowhere near pulling in the kind of income that people say plumbers make.
But once you actually get into being licensed and bonded and the whole shebang, maybe you get a job with a company, because it's really hard to hang your own shingle, especially in the larger communities where nobody knows anybody else or the quality of their work. You'll work for a plumbing company like anyone else, and let me tell you, it's like any other company where profit matters most and it's for shareholders and not anyone else.
Now comes the part you probably have never heard about: many, many, many plumbers don't really have health insurance for most of their careers, and if they do, it's like the shittiest insurance possible and they have to pay for much of their healthcare out of pocket. Except that these are plumbers, they're constantly on hands and knees on hard, unyielding surfaces, bending, lifting...really physical, difficult work. How many of you actually know how much a toilet weighs? it's anywhere between 50-120 lbs depending on a variety of factors. All that, in addition to actually diagnosing whatever the problem is and knowing how to fix it. Do that for the next 20 years of your life and you're not going to have any knees left, you're going to have a bad back, probably most of your other joints are shot or on the fritz in some way, and this is if you were healthy to begin with and didn't have many health problems during your career. Depending on the collective bargaining agreement, sometimes the unions will cover your healthcare at close to 100% after that, but when it was easier to prevent a lot of it by having time off and the ability to afford care? None of that is covered.
Not only that, but most plumbers don't really get paid time off from work, either, depending on what the agreements are. I know it doesn't seem like plumbers ever work timely, but everyone thinks they have an emergency when the plumbing breaks, and you've got to triage the for-real emergencies alongside the "Timmy backed up the toilet again because he keeps flushing his toys and now there's water and poop and who knows what else everywhere." That's not including the emergency answering services where they're relaying that stuff 24/7/365.
How is that different from most of us today, you might wonder? Because they're literally knee-deep in your shit from morning 'til night. All of the weird stuff you do to screw up your toilets, your sinks, your showers, your fixtures, your pipes, they have to deal with all of it. All of the clogs, the gross hair masses, the half-eaten food from when the disposal stops working, the people who don't know not to flush things they shouldn't, the people who do know and don't care, the floods when the sump pump stops working or there's so much rain it just completely overwhelms it, the people who are sure they can "fix" it, the people who listened to youtube or tiktok and picked the wrong accounts for advice, and most of all, metric tonnes of your actual shit and vomit and whatever other bodily excretions you've got. That is all hazardous enough on its own, and if you think it's gross, I don't think plumbers feel any differently, but it is a part of their job and there's no getting around it. They are paid to deal with all of the stuff no one else wants to even think about. And after they've been exposed to your biohazards for 10 hours a day, they themselves have to pay for any care they need to make sure they don't die from it. You know how many people have dangerous mold in their bathrooms and don't know it? I bet a plumber can tell you.
Those are the conditions with unions trying to fight for them.
[As one more note, not everyone wants to leave home, and that's fine! Why does anyone assume there are no tradespeople in cities when that couldn't be further from the truth? Don't be arses about geography.]
tl;dr: plumbers don't make the money you think they do, they spend half their career earning next to nothing and then when they finally start catching up their bodies are so shot they can't enjoy it; in the middle they have to deal with everybody's grossness and basic repair illiteracy, and they pay for most of it themselves.
source: I was an external auditor for a lot of trade unions.
some of the worst classism is white collar middle class americans against blue collar & minimum wage workers. “why does that plumber make more than me” because he’s been perfecting his craft for 30 years and you send emails. “they’re in the trades bc they’re too dumb to do anything else” ok take that engine apart and put it back together real fast babe. “they’re boring bc they never left their home town” have you considered they financially couldn’t? I am not saying it is anyone’s job to educate, nor you need to respect people who do not respect you, but while you maybe never sympathize we need to learn to empathize. consider why (who) allowed for massive parts of country to be uneducated and how many impoverished areas of this country haven’t had a voice for a very long time. we are all victims of the rich. remember it is up vs down

How to Find the Best Drain Cleaning Near Me in Neptune, NJ
Clogged drains can be a nightmare. From slow-draining sinks to water pooling in your home, plumbing issues can disrupt your daily routine in ways you didn't expect. If you're a Neptune, NJ resident, you may wonder, "How can I find the best drain cleaning near me?"
Don't worry—we've got you covered. This guide will help you understand what makes a great drain cleaning service, how to find reliable professionals in Neptune, and why addressing drain issues early are key to protecting your home.
Tumblr media
Why Is Professional Drain Cleaning Important?
Before we dive into finding the exemplary service, let's talk about why professional drain cleaning services are such a big deal. Sure, you can buy a bottle of drain cleaner at your local store, but that's often a short-term fix. Here's why expert help makes all the difference:
Prevents Major Plumbing Problems: A minor clog could indicate deeper issues in the plumbing system, like tree root intrusion or grease build-up.
Saves Time and Hassle: DIY solutions can take hours and may still not work. Professionals use advanced tools like hydro-jetting and video inspections to solve problems efficiently.
Protects Your Pipes: Harsh chemical cleaners can corrode pipes and cause long-term damage. Professional services use safe methods to preserve your plumbing.
Improves Drain Efficiency: Regular cleaning clears clogs and helps water flow smoothly, reducing issues like unpleasant odors.
When you call experts in drain cleaning near me, you're investing in lasting peace of mind.
Signs You Need Drain Cleaning
Is it time to get your drains professionally cleaned? Here are some telltale signs to watch out for:
Slow Draining Water: If water lingers in your sinks or bathtub longer than usual, it might be due to a partial clog.
Frequent Clogs: Does your toilet or sink clog more often than it used to? Recurring issues usually point to a more profound plumbing problem.
Bad Odors: A foul smell from your drains could indicate trapped debris or sewage backup.
Gurgling Noises: Sounds coming from your pipes when you flush the toilet or use the sink may mean air is trapped due to blockages.
Water Backups: If water starts pooling where it shouldn't (like in your basement or around your floor drains), it's time to act fast.
Ignoring these could lead to more expensive repairs, so don't hesitate to look up "drain cleaner near me" in Neptune, NJ, and act quickly.
How to Research the Best Drain Cleaner Near Me
Finding the exemplary service for your needs doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here's a simple step-by-step guide to help you:
1. Ask for Recommendations: Ask friends, family, or neighbors around Neptune for recommendations. Personal referrals often provide reliable, first-hand insights into the quality of service.
2. Search Online Reviews: Sites like Google, Yelp, and Angie's List offer reviews from other homeowners in Neptune. Look for companies with consistently high ratings and detailed positive feedback mentioning punctuality, professionalism, and effective results.
3. Check for Licenses and Certifications: Ensure the company is licensed to operate in New Jersey. Certified plumbers are more credible and expert.
4. Evaluate the Services Offered: The best companies do more than unclog drains. Look for added services like hydro-jetting, video pipe inspections, and routine maintenance. Bonus points if they also offer eco-friendly solutions to minimize your environmental impact.
5. Consider Their Response Time: Plumbing problems can't wait. Make sure the company you choose offers emergency services or timely appointments.
6. Compare Prices: While you don't want to compromise on quality, ensure you're not overpaying. Get quotes from multiple Neptune-based companies, and beware of prices that seem too good to be true—they might indicate poor service.
7. Ask About Warranties: A company that stands by its work often offers a warranty for its drain cleaning services, giving you added peace of mind.
Why Choose a Neptune, NJ-Based Service?
Choosing a local company has several benefits:
Faster Response Times: Every minute counts When dealing with a plumbing emergency. A Neptune-based service can get to you quickly.
Knowledge of Local Systems: Local plumbers are familiar with common plumbing issues in the area, whether caused by the city's infrastructure or Neptune's unique climate.
Supporting Local Businesses: By choosing a local business, you also support the Neptune community.
Simply searching for "drain cleaning near me" will ensure that you'll find services in your neighborhood that understand your needs.
Protect Your Home with Reliable Drain Cleaning
Caring for your drains is crucial for maintaining a healthy, functional home. By finding a dependable and professional drain cleaning service near you in Neptune, NJ, you can avoid the stress and costs of significant plumbing issues down the line.
When signs of trouble appear—slow drains, foul odors, or backups—use this guide to locate the best "drain cleaner near me." Act sooner rather than later to keep your home free from unpleasant surprises.

Finding the Best Plumber for Quick and Reliable Toilet Repair
When plumbing issues arise, the last thing anyone wants is to be stuck with a broken pipe, clogged drain, or malfunctioning toilet. Whether it’s a leaky faucet, low water pressure, or a completely blocked toilet, finding a reliable "plumber near me" is crucial. In this article, we’ll guide you on how to quickly find the right plumber in your area for efficient toilet repair and other plumbing needs.
Tumblr media
Why It’s Important to Find a Plumber Near Me
Plumbing problems tend to happen unexpectedly, often at the most inconvenient times. When faced with an emergency like a burst pipe or a clogged toilet, you’ll want to get help fast. A plumber near you can reach your home much quicker than someone located far away, helping you resolve the issue before it worsens. Additionally, a local plumber is familiar with local building codes, regulations, and common plumbing issues in your area, making them more likely to provide reliable service.
Signs You Need Toilet Repair
One of the most common plumbing issues homeowners face is toilet trouble. If you're experiencing problems with your toilet, it’s important to address the issue promptly. Here are a few signs that you may need toilet repair:
Constant Running: If your toilet continues running after flushing, it could indicate a problem with the flapper, fill valve, or float. This can waste a significant amount of water, leading to higher utility bills.
Clogs: Frequent clogs or difficulty flushing can be a sign of a blockage in the toilet’s pipes. While minor clogs can often be fixed with a plunger, more serious blockages may require professional toilet repair.
Water Leakage: If you notice water pooling around the base of the toilet or water damage on the floor, you may have a leaking toilet. This could be caused by a damaged wax ring or other issues that require professional attention.
Slow Drainage: If water takes too long to drain from the toilet bowl after a flush, there could be a blockage in the pipes leading from the toilet, requiring expert inspection and repair.

How to Choose a Trusted Plumber Near Me
When it comes to plumbing, you don’t want to hire just anyone. Choosing the right plumber near you is essential to ensure high-quality service and long-lasting repairs. Here are some tips for selecting a trustworthy plumber:
Research Local Plumbers: Start by searching online for plumbers in your area. Look for businesses that have good reviews, experience, and a track record of delivering quality work. Websites like Google Reviews and Yelp can give you insight into a plumber’s reputation.
Check for Licensing and Insurance: A professional plumber should be licensed and insured to operate in your area. This ensures that they meet the necessary qualifications and are covered in case anything goes wrong during the repair process.
Get Estimates: Before agreeing to any plumbing work, it’s a good idea to get an estimate. A reliable plumber will provide an upfront cost for the job, so you aren’t surprised by any hidden fees later on.
Look for Emergency Services: Plumbing issues don’t always occur during regular business hours. Choose a plumber who offers emergency services so you can get the help you need when you need it most.
Ask About Experience: Make sure the plumber you hire has experience handling the specific issue you're dealing with, whether it’s a toilet repair, pipe replacement, or water heater installation.
The Benefits of Professional Toilet Repair
While DIY solutions may seem like a good option, toilet repair is best left to the professionals. Here are a few reasons why hiring an expert plumber is the better choice:
Accuracy: A trained plumber can quickly diagnose the issue and make accurate repairs, preventing future problems.
Time-Saving: Attempting to repair a toilet on your own can be time-consuming, especially if you lack the necessary tools and knowledge. A plumber can handle the issue efficiently, saving you time and frustration.
Cost-Effectiveness: While hiring a professional plumber may seem costly upfront, it can save you money in the long run by preventing more serious damage or recurring issues.
Conclusion
When it comes to plumbing problems, especially toilet repair, finding a reliable "plumber near me" is essential for a quick and effective solution. Whether you’re dealing with a minor issue or a major plumbing emergency, hiring a local professional ensures that you get the service you need at an affordable price. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a trusted plumber for any plumbing repairs or maintenance needs — your home and your wallet will thank you!
