LIARS & LEECHES - #BIPOCtober Day 2
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Your fear. It’s so delicious!
Grief. Anxiety. Terror. Tonya Wright felt it all after the tragic murders of her sister and brother-in-law in a random act of gun violence. Struggling to travel outside of her home, she now lives constantly on edge about perceived threats that seem to surround her. Retreating to the house her sister and brother-in-law once shared to process her grief, Tonya soon discovers that someone — or something — has followed her there. With the help of her best friend Natalie, and others she meets along the way, can Tonya overcome her fears before they completely consume her? The first original audio drama from Hemlock Creek Productions, “Liars & Leeches” delves deep into the complicated horrors of grief, trauma, resilience, and steadfast human determination to uncover the truth.
Tumblr media
From @liarsandleechespod
I think the summary on the website does a decent job of describing what the main character Tonya goes through, but she is a black woman who loses her sister and brother in law unexpectedly in a mass shooting. As she struggles to overcome her grief, she discovers someone-or something- is following her.
She really goes through it over the course of the story, but through it all she is incredibly brave, insightful, and curious, and although she knows the importance of relying on her friends (both new and old) through the season, she is also incredibly tough, resilient and can stand up for herself.
Tumblr media
The actor playing her (Kendell Byrd) won best leading performance in an audio drama at the New Jersey Web Fest in 2023 for her role as Tonya.
-
Grief, trauma, horror, and a protagonist going through it, I know how much many of you love that sort of a story~
Follow Liars and Leeches here on Tumblr and check them out wherever you listen to podcasts! Linking their site in the replies.
Hope you've been enjoying #BIPOCtober so far, show some love to your faves in the tags! We'll be slowly reblogging some posts over the week, but will reblog most of them at the end to give these features more attention.
Cheers!

Hi guys😋
Band camp is in 10 days and I've only just started getting back into doodles but uh TWST has been on the brain (to absolutely no one's surprise) and I was gonna wait till I got at least all my Heartslabyul and Octavinelle designs done buttttttttt I got impatient 🤭
Tumblr media
FEATURING THE FAVES💕💕💕 I don't imagine Riddle any different than his canon design, BUT I do headcanon that all the overblot boys have some kinda depigmentation from their overblot marks, just cause the game doesn't really talk about the after effects fr (for obvious Disney reasons but yknow)
Tumblr media
AS FOR FLOYDDDDDDDDDDD I just like the idea of merman/beastmen/fae students having more distinguihable features than the human students !! (I also just really like marks and markings and patterns and and) But other than that !!! He's basically regular shmegular Floyd 🫶🏼
AND THEN
Tumblr media
CATERRRRRRRRR HEADCANON That he has ONE dimple on his right side and that the right side of his face is a little more expressive than the left !!! Just cause !!!

I love Liars & Leeches so much! The voice acting and sound design is incredible! And it is Heavy in the best way possible. Like wow. It portrays so many things and it is just amazing. Also, the idea of the [Redacted for spoiler reasons] feeding is my favorite kind of [Redacted for spoiler reasons]. What is an element of your story that surprised you?
I think the thing about @liarsandleechespod that surprised me the most was how hopeful it ended up becoming. As a horror enjoyer, I actually really like when horror movies don't have a happy ending, or even better if they have an ambiguous one. Originally my idea was to not have a hopeful ending at all and then have each season be a bit more anthology style with different characters in each season, but the more I worked on the original story I realized that I wanted to end season 1 on a hopeful note and keep some of the characters for future seasons.
(Can't guarantee the same for following seasons though)

So! This Audio Drama Sunday I'd like to talk about a show I've been listening to in between doing Crowdfunding stuff to- well not to relax but to think about something else. That show is @liarsandleechespod by @hemcreekprod and man this one is a great listen...
Right off the bat the opening and closing music really hits, It's moody and ominous and just texturally is the kind of sound I love. It also intersects really well with the sound design of Tonya when she sees the mysterious man and is generally panicking. I'm not sure how meta I should go with interpreting this but I'm gonna wait and see before I go all pepe silvia.
Writing and performances are good, enjoying the fact that Tonya has this amazing support network but is still going through it, like how trauma and grief are, it helps but it doesn't fix the problem and I really like the demonstration of that.
I definitely feel like an outsider as this is an exploration of a very unique kind of violence that you find in America, not just in terms of the fact that it happens but just how prevalent it is and specifically how that country deals with it. But even though I feel like there are some facets of this story I'm sure wont resonate with me as much the character and emotion and point of the whole thing still shine through reaaaally well.
I'm not super far in but I'm really excited to see some more of the "supernatural" in the "supernatural horror" and how its going to use it as a way to explore Tonya trauma (that's currently where I feel like it's going but I may of course be totally wrong)
Anyway, I really really recommend you check this one out! Feels very grounded in an excellent way.

1, 4, and 8 for the creator questions!
1. What stage of production is the most fun for you?
I love doing vocal cuts! Getting to listen to my phenomenal cast and all of the takes they provided and then stitch those pieces together into actual conversations is so fun for me. I also just adore my cast so getting to hear them is always going to be my favorite part :D
4. Is there a specific episode that was especially fun to work on?
I talked about episode 23 when this was asked originally but the other one that was really fun to work on is episode 12. I love getting to be angry into a mic and channeling that rage and fear and sadness. Purely from a voice acting standpoint, 12 was probably the most fun
8. Pick a character from your show and put together an outfit you think they’d wear.
This is so hard for me because I have such a hard time picturing characters in my mind. Silver in my mind dresses very similar to me so I've picked some of the pictures I have of me in clothes I think he'd wear
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image description: for pictures of Pine, a fat light skined latino/asian person with shoulder length brown hair. In the first picture they are wearing a yellow button down with short sleeves and a black skirt with a yellow bee pattern on it. In the second picture they are wearing a green shirt with Snoopy comics printed on it and a tan skirt with purple flowers along the bottom. In the third picture they are wearing a blue and white striped short sleeve button down with pink flowers on it and a dark blue skirt that has crystal daggers along the bottom. In the last picture they are wearing a pink shirt with a stylized M on it in the colors of the bi flag and a teal skirt with cherry blossoms along the bottom. All four pictures are taken in front of a mirror. /end ID]

Looking for your next horror audio drama?
youtube
Welcome to "Liars & Leeches," an immersive, full cast, supernatural horror audio drama. The first original audio drama from Hemlock Creek Productions (@hemcreekprod), “Liars & Leeches” delves deep into the complicated horrors of grief, trauma, resilience, and steadfast human determination to uncover the truth.

Psychological and supernatural horror like Stephen King's "The Outsider"

Tension building through sound design, especially in quiet moments like "A Quiet Place" (which was a massive source of sonic inspiration for the show)
Audio dramas such as "Dark Dice," "Dark Sanctum," "Maxine Miles," "Aftershock," "Transplanar RPG," and "Connections," as Hemlock Creek Productions assisted with audio editing for all of them.
Soundtracks like those from "Yellowjackets," "Smile," "Chernobyl," "Broadchurch," and "The Rising," all of which were used as inspirations for the music in "Liars & Leeches."
