Archaeologists Unearthed Dozens of Roman Tweezers in Britain
Archaeologists have unearthed dozens of Roman tweezers in Britain, revealing the ancient culture’s obsession with hairlessness.
The collection has now gone on display in a new museum at Wroxeter Roman City, which in its prime would have been as large a settlement as Pompeii.
The simple tools would have been used not only for plucking eyebrows but for removing any unwanted hair – including in armpits.
The tweezers are part of a wider exhibition of more than 400 artifacts which illustrates the Romans’ preoccupation with cleanliness and aesthetic beauty.
Among the other items on show are a strigil (skin scraper), perfume bottles, jet and bone jewelery, make-up applicators and amulets for warding off evil.
English Heritage, which runs the museum in Shropshire, revealed the find on its website.
Cameron Moffett, English Heritage curator at Wroxeter Roman City, said online that the find was one of the largest of its kind in Britain, indicating that tweezers were a “popular accessory.”
“The advantage of the tweezer was that it was safe, simple and cheap, but unfortunately not pain free,” he said.
The Romans greatly valued personal hygiene, attending communal baths daily. Many people would have had their own personal cleaning sets, including an ear scoop, nail cleaner and tweezers.
Usually associated with eyebrow shaping today, tweezers would have been used for general hair removal, including to pluck armpit hair, said English Heritage.
“It may come as a surprise to some that in Roman Britain the removal of body hair was as common with men as it was with women,” said Moffett.
“Particularly for sports like wrestling, there was a social expectation that men engaging in exercise that required minimal clothing would have prepared themselves by removing all their visible body hair.
Often performed by slaves, hair removal could be very painful. According to English Heritage, Roman author and politician Seneca complained about the noise at the baths in a letter, saying “the skinny armpit hair-plucker whose cries are shrill, so as to draw people’s attention, and never stop, except when he is doing his job and making someone else shriek for him.”
Wroxeter Roman City, or Viriconium Cornoviorum as it was known, is one of the best preserved Roman towns in Britain.
Previous excavations have uncovered the forum, the market, the bath house, a large hall known as the bath-house basilica and the town houses of wealthy residents.

These excerpts are from Damien Hagen’s “Regeneration and trans possibility in Doctor Who,” which was published in the most recent issue of Transformative Works and Cultures, OTW’s open access journal. It’s free to read… here (click the button that says HTML)!
Here’s what the editors of the issue had to say:
“Damien Hagen focuses on Doctor Who fandom and the way in which the Doctor's regenerative capacity provides the means for queer and trans fans to explore trans possibilities and gender euphoria. Long before the Doctor's ability to change genders became canon in Doctor Who in 2018 with Jodie Whittaker's Doctor, trans fans have been drawn to the series for its emphasis on changeability, malleability, and bodily fluidity. Through an autoethnographic lens, Hagen argues that Doctor Who can be read as a trans media object—one that is not necessarily explicitly transgender but instead opens up gendered possibilities in which trans fans can imagine otherwise. Hagen further draws on other trans fans' queer and trans readings of a variety of canonical moments in Doctor Who to argue that the ephemerality and liminality of the series can be particularly pleasurable and gender affirming for trans and nonbinary fans who are undertaking their own processes of regeneration. While the series might never have been intended as a trans narrative, Hagen argues that through fannish interpretations and queer readings, it has the potential to provide a mechanism for survival, self-love, and gender euphoria.”
In the plainest terms, Hagen discusses his own/other trans fans’ experiences with Doctor Who as a tool to understand and love their transness. Themes of the show that trans people may relate to include:
Emphasis on change as a good thing (and lifesaving).
Carrying previous selves into the future, loving previous bodies and selves.
The specific experience of ‘creating’ a new body (the Doctor’s ability to regenerate), acceptance of/excitement about those bodies from oneself/others.
Doctor Who, Hagen argues, is a “trans media object,” or a piece of media that may not have explicitly trans characters but allows viewers to see transness reflected in other ways. For instance, when the Doctor and other characters accept their new body, it can feel affirming to a trans viewer who is also navigating the experience of a changing body. Hagen writes, “The regenerations weren't about gender, but my nascent transness felt them as such.”
Do you have a similar experience with Doctor Who? Or are there other media you have felt similarly about?

Paisley headcanons

I thought I’d give it a shot with lego friends headcanons for one character of the series, so I’m doing one of my favorite characters from the series, what are some headcanons you have for paisley?
Paisley sings to herself when she is alone to not draw attention to others, and sometimes she sings in the bath or shower since usually nobody else (besides her and younger her sister, Ella) is home
Ones I have already established before:
She is pansexual and transfem
Her full name (since her transition) is Audrey Paisley Roberts
She and Liann are dating

Hot take: I don't like that the s3 eps will be back to 11min
So apparently for Season 3 of LF: The Next Chapter, the eps will now be 11min and split in half, two stories per ep. Now I don't like this, mainly because while season 1 and season 2 eps were pretty self-contained but also had a strong overall continuity with good side stories that played into it overall. Plus, we already have multiple stories per ep-take for example, the one titled 'Liann's Lucky Charms'.
There's no doubt that Liann's charms are the focus of the episode, but there's a strong side story with Leo that eventually culminates with the collision of both of the plots of the episode; Liann giving Leo a lucky charm to help give him courage to stand up to Candi. The episode didn't feel too short or too long, but thanks to the length time, it was able to build up the necessary parts that needed to be shown for the audience to empathize with Leo and root for him with Candi, and also to show the gradual descent of madness with the lucky charms.
None of it felt like filler-it was all vital to show the impact, and because the buildup was strong, the payoff was satisfying to watch and the conclusion was good. If the episode length is shortened again, then the buildup will also have to be cut. This will make it harder to show more mature stories with satisfying tension and buildup to show the real issues, because there won't be enough time to fit it all in.
And sure, you could argue that 'if they stick to one story per 11min', like say only featuring Liann's charms for 11min without the side story with Leo. But then it's not as impactful. We've seen the lucky charms be used for good luck with Zac's dance move, Aliya's test, Nova's level, et cetera. But it doesn't quite carry the same weight as Leo using the last charm while standing up to Candi. It's a solid and good message, delivered well, that also brings the lucky charms full circle and ties it off nicely. So while you could write it without the parts with Leo, it simply would not carry the same emotional weight.
Similarly, there's also something to be said about the part where Liann offers Leo a lucky charm. Could Leo's story also be a separate 11min-ep? Possibly. But the whole point of the buildup with the lucky charms finally being used to help Leo with a real, true issue and not for something as momentary as a test or a lucky draw scratch card, is what closes the plotline perfectly. Cutting the episode time in half will make the story suffer.
So overall, I don't want the episodes to end up 11min again, because I think that it will result in stories with less satisfying buildup and payoff. That's already happened to Ninjago, and I am so glad they returned to 22-min eps.

How are you
i am meh!! i just had a negatively eventful weekend and i really need recharge time, but i have to work a lot </3 it is okay, i will use my free time for now to rest )):
i was thinking of binging more of lego friends girls on a mission today and tomorrow evening! i’ve also started working on a liann edit! i haven’t edited in a bit due to busy life schedule and no motivation. i miss editing, but it’s become such a tedious activity to me. usually what helps me regain inspo is watching my shows, rewatching my old edits, or watching edit tutorials
i’ve also been wanting to make my own lego friends oc? i think it could be fun! i haven’t had a proper oc for canon media since a couple years ago when i made some for rainbow high. but i haven’t worked on them in awhile. before that was for miraculous ladybug like… five years ago? wowie anyways
i was thinking i might have my oc be the sixth friend for the main five and she’d be themed on the colour red. i already have some ideas for her physical design. luckily lego friends has a more simplistic style, so i don’t have to go crazy with the design :’D i haven’t drawn in a long time and i really dislike drawing, but i mean. it’s not like tons of people will see my art since there’s not a lot of people in the legos friends fandom. i dunno if i’d even post it anyways… who knows
this is my long winded way of saying I Am Tired & I Miss Making Art ☹️☹️☹️ P.S. i was officially diagnosed with adhd so that’s something new!

Yukimi Unveils Her Soulful and Amazing Solo Debut with ‘Break Me Down’

Yukimi’s debut solo single, “Break Me Down,” marks a bold and heartfelt departure from her acclaimed work with Grammy-nominated Swedish band Little Dragon. It’s the first glimpse into a solo journey that promises to reveal new depths to an artist already known for her emotive range and captivating stage presence. Co-written with Erik Bodin and Lianne La Havas, this single channels a raw honesty that feels both unguarded and empowering, marking Yukimi’s first time collaborating with another female artist—a choice that brings an added layer of feminine energy to the track. “Break Me Down” dives deep into themes of inner resilience, reflecting on finding strength through life’s darker moments. It’s a profound statement from a seasoned artist stepping into the next chapter with the grace of a veteran and the curiosity of a newcomer. Erik Bodin, Yukimi’s Little Dragon bandmate, takes on production duties, layering drums, bass, and keys to create a soulful yet dynamic backdrop. Lianne La Havas’s guitar work adds a tender touch, seamlessly blending with Yukimi’s signature voice—a voice that has captivated audiences across the globe. The song’s accompanying music video, directed by Fredrik Egerstrand, draws inspiration from cinematic history, with scenes shot at Hovs Hallar, the same beach where Ingmar Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal” was filmed. Yukimi reenacts the iconic encounter between Death and the Knight, offering a visual homage to the legendary director, all bathed in the fading light of a late Swedish summer. Yukimi’s voice has always stood out, from Little Dragon’s genre-blending tracks to standout collaborations with artists like Gorillaz, KAYTRANADA, and SBTRKT, where her unforgettable feature on “Wildfire” solidified her status as a singular force in music. Now, with “Break Me Down,” she presents a more personal side, weaving elements of pop-R&B and alternative soul with a lyrical focus that feels intimate and freshly introspective. As Yukimi prepares for her first solo performances this December in New York, Santa Ana, Oakland, and Los Angeles, anticipation builds for what’s to come. This debut single isn’t just a taste of her solo work; it’s an invitation into the depths of her artistry, promising an evocative blend of vulnerability and sonic exploration. Read the full article

Lianne La Havas by Lianne La Havas
part of my "diversify your playlists" initiative.
listen on spotify
listen on apple music
This is an insanely wonderful album. With an R&B sound, that draws clear but subtle inspirations from jazz, and soul Lianne is able to capture a unique sound that contrasts with her soft voice in this record. Through her lyrics, Lianne goes on a journey of self-discovering and healing during a breakup. She reminisces the good and the bad and comes to the consensus of the end.
Lianne shows her genius in the production of this album. It is soft but piercing and impactful, further driving the album's themes.
Fav tracks: Bittersweet, Please don't make me cry, Sour Flower
