book review: thrown off the ice by taylor fitzpatrick
OHHHHH BOY OH HOLY SHIT THIS FUCKING BOOK 15/5 STARS YOU OWN MY HEART NOW
okay so I was not planning to do any actual book reviews on this blog but this one really merits it. more detail under the cut but as a preview: PCS/resulting health issues, hockey romance, my heart was absolutely torn to shreds
Thrown Off the Ice by Taylor Fitzpatrick follows Liam and Mike. They're on the same team, but Liam is a rookie and Mike is a 30 year old enforcer. Their romance starts reluctant and hot and everything you'd expect from a forbidden contemporary romance that you have to keep hidden. Liam is high-energy and likes to push buttons. Mike likes his routine the way it is. Liam is a rising star. Mike is a traditional enforcer and that includes the physical repercussions that come with that role.
I won't go further into dynamic and plot but happy to discuss any potential CW/TW over messages.
holllllyyyyy shit this book just tore my heart out of my body and crumpled it up. I went through a whole travel pack of tissues and a few more. I still loved it so much. It may be hard for me to watch hockey quite the same way after reading this. Tore into me even more after rereading the dedication. Made me think a bit more about people like NolPat and Sid's post winter classic concussion (and so many others tbh. and my own sister.)
This book is part of a larger universe with many different reading orders but this the order I've gone in so far:
You Could Make a Life (published as an ebook on web retailers or available directly from the author in the uncut version [the one i read] here)
Giving In to the Influence (published here on Ao3)
Follow the North Star (published here on Ao3) (this ties in quite heavily with Thrown Off the Ice)
Vinny Gets a Life (published here on Ao3)
Thrown off the Ice (published as an ebook on web retailers or available here directly with a bunch of shorts included)
there are still so many stories in this universe but this is as far as I've gotten so far. if you search "you could make a life reading order" you'll probably get some answers about other ways you can take it

Parker Posey in Fay Grim (Hal Hartley, 2006)
Cast: Parker Posey, James Urbaniak, Liam Aiken, Jeff Goldblum, Chuck Montgomery, Leo Fitzpatrick, Saffron Burrows, Jasmine Tabatabai, Elina Löwensohn, Thomas Jay Ryan, Anatole Taubman. Screenplay: Hal Hartley. Cinematography: Sarah Cawley. Production design: Richard Sylvarnes. Film editing: Hal Hartley. Music: Hal Hartley.
Fay Grim (Parker Posey) is having a bad day: Her husband is missing, her brother is in prison, and her son is about to be kicked out of school. Soon this will look like one of the better days. Fay Grim is another of Hal Hartley's ventures into subverting a genre, particularly the espionage thriller. But it's also filtered through another genre, one you might call "the Sandra Bullock movie." At least I call it that because it brought to mind the last Sandra Bullock movie I saw, The Lost City (Adam Nee, Aaron Nee, 2022), in which she plays a woman who gets swept up into an unexpected adventure. Bullock is not the only actress who lands in that kind of film, but she's been the prototypical heroine of them since her breakthrough movie, Speed (Jan de Bont, 1994). In Fay Grim Posey fits the part as well as or even better than Bullock. It's nominally a sequel to Henry Fool (1997), in which Hal Hartley introduced us to Fay, her brother, Simon (James Urbaniak), and the enigmatic Henry Fool (Thomas Jay Ryan). All you need to know from that film is that Fay and Henry had a son, Ned (Liam Aiken), and that Simon went to prison because he helped Henry flee the country to avoid a murder rap. Now, an Agent Fulbright (Jeff Goldblum) from the CIA is suddenly in touch with Fay to see if she knows the whereabouts of the notebooks Henry kept. He claimed to be writing a sort of confessional novel that publishers had told him was unpublishable. Henry is dead, Fulbright tells her, but the notebooks may have significance no one has previously suspected. And so begins an elaborate chase that takes Fay to Paris and Istanbul, and involves Simon (whom she gets sprung from prison) and Ned (who receives a mysterious clue in the mail), as well as a lot of intelligence agents and terrorists from all over Europe and the Middle East. Fay Grim becomes as intrepid as Jason Bourne or James Bond in the process. Posey's performance holds it all together and makes me wonder why she's not as big a star as Bullock. It's fun to see some of these characters again, but by wading so deeply into spy spoof territory Hartley has lost the control that made Henry Fool such a fresh new start for his career, and some of his recently acquired mannerisms -- like the tilted camera, the so-called "Dutch angle" -- are tiresome.

In the heart of the Bismarck Range, a remote and forbidding mountain range known for its rugged terrain and impenetrable forests, a team of scientists from Trinity College Dublin embarked on an unprecedented expedition. Led by Dr. Elena Kavanagh, a renowned xenobiologist, the team sought to uncover the secrets of a newly discovered cave system that emitted strange, unidentifiable signals.
The team consisted of experts from various fields: Dr. Liam O'Sullivan, a geologist; Dr. Aisling Murphy, an astrobiologist; and Dr. Conor Fitzpatrick, an engineer specializing in advanced robotics. Alongside them were a group of highly sophisticated androids, designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the Bismarck Range and assist in their research.
After weeks of grueling travel, the team finally reached the cave's entrance. As they ventured deeper into the darkness, they relied on the androids' advanced sensors to guide them. The walls of the cave were lined with an unknown, bioluminescent fungus that bathed the cavern in an eerie green glow. The further they went, the stronger the signals became, until they stumbled upon a massive underground chamber.
In the center of the chamber stood an ancient, alien monolith, covered in intricate carvings and pulsating with a faint, otherworldly light. As Dr. Kavanagh approached the monolith, she felt a strange, almost magnetic pull towards it. The androids' sensors began to pick up unprecedented readings, indicating the presence of a powerful, non-terrestrial energy source.
Suddenly, the monolith began to emit a low, resonant hum. The air grew thick with a palpable sense of dread as the ground beneath them started to tremble. From the shadows emerged a creature unlike anything they had ever seen. It was monstrous, with a twisted, sinewy body, glowing yellow eyes, and a maw filled with razor-sharp teeth. Its movements were swift and unnatural, as if it existed just outside the boundaries of their reality.
The creature let out a deafening roar, and the team quickly realized they were facing an entity of immense power and malevolence. The androids immediately formed a defensive perimeter, their advanced weaponry trained on the beast. Dr. Kavanagh and her team scrambled to find a way to contain the creature, using every resource at their disposal.
Dr. O'Sullivan's geological expertise allowed him to identify a series of unstable rock formations that could potentially trap the creature. With the androids providing cover, Dr. Fitzpatrick and Dr. Murphy worked together to rig a series of explosive charges. As the creature lunged towards them, the team detonated the explosives, causing a massive cave-in that sealed the monster within the chamber.
Breathless and shaken, the team regrouped at the cave's entrance. The monolith's energy readings had ceased, and the signals they had been tracking were no longer detectable. Dr. Kavanagh knew that they had only just begun to scratch the surface of the mysteries hidden within the Bismarck Range.
Returning to Trinity College Dublin, the team shared their findings with the scientific community. Their discovery of the alien monolith and the horrifying creature became the subject of intense study and debate. The expedition raised more questions than answers, challenging humanity's understanding of life, the universe, and the potential threats lurking in the uncharted corners of our world.
As Dr. Kavanagh stood before a packed lecture hall, she concluded her presentation with a solemn warning: "The Bismarck Range holds secrets that defy our comprehension. We must proceed with caution, for we have seen firsthand the horrors that await those who dare to delve too deeply into the unknown."

Thrown off the Ice by Taylor Fitzpatrick
Pages: 280 Published: 13 Dec 2018 My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Content warnings: mcd
When I saw all the five star ratings I got a little suspicious because when a book is being hyped everywhere, it’s usually just that - hype - and probably not that good, but fucking hell, this book absolutely destroyed me. I didn’t know what I was getting into, I was not expecting the turn this story took. Seriously, with that two sentence blurb, I had no idea this was how it was going to end. (though I should’ve from the dedication at the start, I realize now) All I can say is this: this is a great story, wonderfully written but it’ll break your fucking heart. You can’t help but love the two mcs (I only wish we knew more about them, I desperately want to know why Liam got so fascinated with Mike at the start), the writing keeps you engaged the whole time, I couldn’t stop reading, and it’s a love story like none I’ve read before. It’s so far from the usual romantic cliches and tropes, but still so raw and so real?? I could talk about this book for days. Just, incredible. And I don’t understand that one comment I saw calling this book boring and saying they couldn’t feel anything for the characters when I was legit bawling my eyes out from the moment i understood what was going to happen.
