There’s blood in your hair, it mats the delicate strands together in clumps as you stand in the bathroom staring at your reflection in the mirror. Your skin is deathly pale underneath the lighting, there’s crimson speckles dotted across your cheek and pieces of brain and bone cling to your clothes.

You’d been barely a foot way when Liam had killed himself in your office. He’d stood right across your desk and pulled the trigger. This is the shit they don't show you in the movies, the reality and the mess that comes along with a gunshot.

That rape case you’ve been investigating, the one where Lieutenant Commander Stacey Daniels was repeatedly victimized, it was him. It was him both times.

He’d been careful in the first instance, meticulous even. He hadn’t left a shred of evidence. He’d treated her like a lover, whispering the sweetest things against her skin as he’d stolen a piece of her soul.

It’s during the second time he fucks up. He’s jealous and out of control, driven by impulse because Stacey, she was putting her life back together, she was moving on, getting engaged and Liam, he just couldn’t have that. He’d left his bitemarks on her flesh, his DNA in her mouth.

“I was blackout drunk the second time.” He’d told you as he removed the gun from holster and jammed it under his chin. “I only started to remember when I saw the crime scene photographs. I didn’t realise I was capable of something like that.”

“Liam…” You’d said as you rose to your feet.

“I’m sorry Lisa, really I am.”

You’d thrown yourself over the desk then, reaching for gun but it was too late.

Alden’s firm palms come to rest on your shoulders, drawing you out of the memory, his gaze meeting yours in the reflection.

“Let’s get you cleaned up.” He says softly.

You’ve been unresponsive since he’d put you in the car. You just keep re-living the event in your head, replaying the investigation, scrutinizing Liam’s behaviour. You thought you’d become good at spotting predators, you’d had no idea that you’d been working alongside one.

You don’t remember undressing, or stepping into the shower. By the time you come back to yourself Alden’s hands are in your hair, rinsing the blood and viscera out of it.

“That’s better isn’t it sweetheart?” He murmurs as he shuts off the water and wraps you up in the softest towel you own. “That's much better.”

"Good morning. This is Evie. I'm writing this for any Jabberwok students to see this. This is Liam Alden, a new transferring student and sent to Jabberwok and second year. Please excuse that he's sleeping 24/7. He's in constant drainage due to his stigma, making him pass out mid way or sleep in certain areas. He has pills to take at certain occasions or if you need him. He's a nonchalant, friendly, and chill person. I'm sure you'll be good friends.

She flips the note around and skims through it, only really picking up that she has a new housemate and he's a friend of Evie's. Alli quickly goes back to poking the boy in attempts to wake him up.

"Heyy? You shouldn't snooze in the cold! You might freeze to death or something! I dunno.... I saw it happen on Russian Doll so that means it's possible, right? Natasha Lyonne would never lie to me.... right? Hello?!?"

I love that this arc shows Alden meeting new kinds of Anesidorans that he normally wouldn't give the time of day.

Liam and company being hero school washouts is really sad when you think about it.

Alden and I were both pretty shocked that Anesidora would have petty thieves. Were they unregistered that got caught and just released? Were they Anesidoran from birth? Either way why would the break into the houses of people they know have superpowers? Anesidora has a great social safety net and ubiquitous surveillance. This is the worst possible place to try this.

Companion piece to Crime Scene Clean Up

The sound of your friend Lieutenant Commander Stacey Daniel's voice plays over your headphones as you listen to the interview once more. You can hear the tightness in her tone, the catch in her breath. You remember the tissue she had been clutching, the way she tore it up between her fingers.

It’s three in the morning and you’re sitting in Alden’s rooftop greenhouse, a cup of nighttime tea clasped to your chest. You’re wearing one of his button up shirts, the sleeves rolled up to your elbows. Your eyes are closed as you visualise the interview, Stacey’s demeanour, her hunched shoulders and withdrawn body language. She had come to you privately after being assaulted for the second time. You’d taken her statement before opening an investigation.

Alden watches you from the doorway, his robe cinched tightly around his waist. You’ve been restless since Liam's death, since Stacey's too. He sighs before stepping into the room, he knows you’re a little stuck, that if he lets you, you’ll stay awake all night listening to that interview over and over again, searching for the thing you missed.

You hadn’t missed anything; he’s listened to the tape himself. No one could have known that the man that Stacey was describing was your second in command, NCIS Agent Liam Cheswick

No one could have predicted what happened next.

That two days after the interview Liam would walk into your office and shoot himself in the head or that a week later they'd find Stacey dead in her car in the Nature Reserve. She'd taken a handful of pills because the knowledge that her friend, someone she trusted had done that to her not once but twice, had been too much to bear.

You pull the headphones out of your ears as Alden sits down next to you, his hip bumping against yours.

“Sweetheart,” he says softly, his arm comes to rest around your shoulders. “You need to stop torturing yourself.”

You draw your legs up underneath you, tucking yourself into his side. There’s a safety in this man, there always has been. You need that right now, his security, his comfort because you’re having trouble getting out of your own head. His lips brush over your hairline as you cuddle in close, his thumb chasing over the curve of your shoulder.

“How about we light a candle?” He says quietly, tipping your chin up so he can look into your eyes. “And we remember Stacey the way she was before all of this.”

“I’d like that.” You say as he chases the tear away from your cheek with his thumb. “Really Alden I would.”

It takes him a couple of minutes to find a candle, it’s lavender scented, one of the ones you use in the tub sometimes. He sets it in one of the holders before placing it in the window and using the firelighter to ignite it. He returns to the couch, his arm wrapping around your shoulders, holding you close as the two of you watch the light until it dies out.
