These are the stories of some people, all more or less queer, that live their lives in the City, are all interconnected (either as friends or as rivals) and go through both fun and difficult times together.
This modern AU for several historical and/or wuxia c-dramas is set in some large globalised city adjacent to the Sinosphere, or at least with a very sizeable Chinese diaspora. I don't know enough about Taipeh, and Singapore is out of the question for reasons, so I'm just calling it The City and shall leave it at that. It has everything a city needs -- a university, high-rises, an IKEA, internet cafés, a gay scene, corruption in the building sector, an airport, and young edgy artists. It's hot there in the summer, very rainy in autumn (think typhoons, the way they tend to interrupt life in Japan) and temperate in winter. In this place, characters from
Word of Honor
The Untamed
A League of Nobleman
Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Sleuth of Ming Dynasty
and some more that are a bit blink-and-you-miss it,
are living their modern, non-magical lives which I am following along in this series.
The main parts are "A Matter of Priorities" (Rong Changqing/Ye Baiyi from Word of Honor / Tian Ya Ke) and "Detoxify" (Li Lianhua/Di Feisheng/Fang Duobing from Mysterious Lotus Casebook), but everybody gets their moment in the limelight. Even Mo Xuanyu.-
Re-post of this self-promo inspired by @fealiniel's recent post. Thanks to @busarewski for cheering me on while writing, and helping me pick the banner.

I haven't seen the new episodes yet. But from what I can gather this show is wish fulfillment and I'm quite excited that from what I've heard so far the plot is going like. The Most ideal way i would have hoped for it to be written

im giffing the scene with gao xiaolian and gao chong (and shen shen! but this is not abt him!) in ep10, the one were xiaolian pleads her dad to stop sending her with gifts to chengling as part of their arranged betrothal that chengling doesnt want anyway. you can really feel the genuinety behind the love these two have for each other, father and daughter, despite not seeing eye to eye in this matter. xiaolian adores her father and gao chong doesnt seem happy at causing her any hurt, even if he expects his only daughter to carry out her filial duty

It's really fun pointing at the screen and going 'hey it's that actor!'
(Or at least it is if you can tell the actors apart when they have a different hairstyle, which i can't. In that case a trusted friend helps)
But have you ever considered.
What if the two characters changed places?

The women in Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Normally I feel like I have to turn off my feminism brain for some of these shows, but I was beyond pleasantly surprised at how deftly the main female characters in MLC were handled...
Qiao Wanmian: The perfect set-up for a female character only brought in to serve the main male character's emotional arc (usually by getting fridged), but she... gets her shit together, takes over the sect, and becomes a boss ass bitch?? SLAY. She respects both Li Lianhua and herself enough to recognize it's never going to happen between them and she needs to live her life on her terms. She also realizes Ye Baiyi Xiao Zijin is a piece of trash and she deserves better. -1 for excessive teary pining for Li Xiangyi, though tbh I can relate, because I too will be obsessively and excessively crying over Li Lianhua for 10+ years. Embarassing for both of us. Still, 14/10 for a self-respecting lady
Master He: THE mom of all time. Teases Fang Duobing for his obessesion with his boyfriend Li Lianhua. Pulls the "I'm not your biological mom but I raised you, bitch" shit and it works. Steps in, fists raised, whenever her son needs help in a fight. Loves torture devices. Meanwhile, you keep forgetting if Fang Duobing's dad is dead or if he's just on the couch playing duolingo like the dad in Barbie. But it's fine because mom carries the whole fam + family business anyway. 16/10 milf
The princess: Seemed more pissed than heartbroken that Fang Duobing ran away from their marriage, which neatly avoids the "spurned woman" trope. Is so freaking cute I wanna squish her cheeks. Acts like a realistic pouty teen but also wields her princess power like it's nobody's business. Understands Fang Duobing's desires at the end and respects them both enough to let him follow his heart. 15/10 would adopt
Jiao Liqiao: Batshit psycho. I love her. Unhinged and horny on main. Infinity/10

Fresh batch of fic recs
Fics that have caught my attention and made their way into my good reads pile over the last week or so. Some older, some newer. A mix between Guardian and Word of Honor this time. I've put an asterisk next to my favorites from the batch.
Word of Honor
See It In Your Closed Eyes by Alipeeps, k_lynn
“It’s alright,” Zhou Zishu says, “It’s fine. You’ll be fine.”
Wen Kexing gives a shaky little laugh, “The more you say that the less I believe you, Ah Xu.”
“Be quiet and keep your eyes closed,” Zhou Zishu snaps back.
An attack leaves Wen Kexing temporarily without his sight and dependent on Zhou Zishu's care. Neither of them takes easily to vulnerability. They find a way through.
*Mine by incendir
Rec comments: The summaries for this series are fairly sparse. This is an A/B/O universe where the hyper competent and fed up empress Zhou Zishu uses warlord Wen Kexing to kidnap himself out of a bad situation. Wen Kexing does not mind at all.
slithered here from eden by novembersmith
Zhou Zishu reluctantly allows life to infect him again.
proceed reluctantly by fmo
What if Word of Honor, but with a slight flavor of Advance Bravely?
Gu Xiang, the barista, needs a decoy boyfriend to prevent her overprotective big brother from discovering and scaring off her actual real boyfriend. Innocent customer Zhou Zishu doesn't get a chance to opt out of this plan.
And then somehow Wen Kexing ends up sticking around, making sure that Zhou Zishu isn't making moves on his sister . . . which involves more stalking and cooking than you might expect.
*dear heaven by foreverstudent
In a darker world where the Combined Six Cultivation Method fails and the snowy mountains become the burial mounds for his shifu and shishu, Chengling trains his martial arts under Ye Baiyi to be able to do only one thing: go back in time and save his found family.
The Arrangement by kestrelsan
“You didn’t tell me you had a marriage arrangement with the Ghost King of Qingya,” Helian Yi said, when Zhou Zishu arrived at the throne room.
*Nurture by TK_DuVeraun
The only way Zhou Zishu is going to properly reestablish Four Seasons Manor is if he has a child of his own. Conveniently, he has no intention of doing either.
A Good Bargain by Neery
The Window of Heaven captures the Ghost Valley's master. Zhou Zishu is put in charge of interrogating him.
But Wen Kexing has a plan of his own…
*you're the trouble that i always find by sundiscus
“Do you know him?” Jin Wang asks.
The ringing in Zhou Zishu's ears gets louder. “No, Wangye,” he says.
At Zhou Zishu’s voice, the prisoner freezes.
Or: Jin Wang tries another way to get Zhou Zishu back.
It's All That I'm Made Of by etymologyplayground
Zhou Zishu clutched his soup and said nothing. There was something he wanted to say, but he figured he should eat first and maybe that would make him less insane, and maybe then he'd think better of it.
He did not think better of it.
Guardian
*redux by synonemous
Stand-alone alternate takes on how Shen Wei and Zhao Yunlan could have gotten together in the show.
The Mortifying Ordeal of Telling the Truth by BlackwaterVial
Shen Wei loses the ability to lie. It goes about as well as you'd expect
Turn The Page by leonidskies
Shen Wei was Dixingren. Shen Wei had lied.
The SID are called to extract a book that no Haixingren can touch. A few weeks later, definitely-not-Dixingren Shen Wei picks it up unknowingly.
Trapped between memory and the moment by laireshi
There's no first in their relationship.
Catnip and Memories by nightwalker
“Is this the family you had planned for yourself, Xiao Wei?” he’d asked, voice little more than a hushed whisper in the dark. “An eccentric soldier with a candy addiction and a cat that tries his best to eat us out of house and home?”
Soar No Higher by sakana17
Shen Wei trembled a little at the words, expressed so frankly, so openly. His heart was already free, it could soar no higher. He could only bring the taste of those words to his own lips in a long, cherishing kiss.
Set during episode 35, and assumes a passage of time of at least a month during the ancient Haixing scenes.

WIP Wednesday
From the last chapter of 'Detoxify'. Li Lianhua's PoV
--------------------------------------------------
The TCM Society’s office was in the colonial part of the City, across a park and down a bit of beautiful boulevard from Jing Beiyuan’s office, so everybody got up, gathered their files, and made ready to leave.
Almost dazed, Li Lianhua went along.
When they got to the office and the roof terrace, half of everybody they knew were there -- Rong Changqing and Ye Baiyi, of course, in big puffy jackets, and Zhou Zishu who was clinging to Wen Kexing from behind because he was cold, and the other guys from Shulin’s polycule, plus little Theodosia, who was crawling and toddling around on the terrace and attempting to grab and try everybody’s drinks.
And then, in a corner, Li Lianhua spotted his own lovely men, A-Fei and Xiaobao, trying to get an ominously hissing espresso machine to work. It wasn’t a huge Italian one like the baristas preferred, it was one of those fully automatic ones that were more intelligent than most of the people who bought them, and that liked to utter scathing messages on a little display at their hapless owners.
He made a bee-line for them, neatly stepping over Teddy who was trying to steal somebody’s ominously green drink from a low table.
“A-Fei,” he said when he was close enough that only they would hear the exhaustion in his voice, “I really urgently need a tall drink of water, and here you are!”
Di Feisheng turned around, slung his long arms around him, and just held him.
Li Lianhua could feel himself decompressing by the second, letting off steam just like the unhappy espresso machine.
“I heard they were making you a lifetime member?” Fang Duobing said, viciously cranking something inside the machine. “You really are good at what you do. I keep telling you! When you had enough of that water, there will be coffee, I promise.”
“I will never have enough of that water,” Li Lianhua said, leaning his cheek on Di Feisheng’s shoulder and feeling almost at peace with the world again. “Never! But coffee would be welcome. Thanks.”

You may wonder why I don't mention the Lotus Guys even though I hardly write anything else these days -- it's because I can't decide which of the three is my favourite. I thought maybe Di Feisheng (who fits my preferred type of "evil" guy with deep trauma who totally breaks your heart before the story is over (anybody here remember Urquhart?)), but that would mean ignoring Li Lianhua, Schrödinger's king of lies and complexity, existing somewhere between Buddhist enlightenment and clinical depression, or Fang Duobing, young master of boundless confidence and non-stop chatter, who actually learns to listen to people and care for them, not just about them. I can't possibly choose!!
If you'd like to do this, feel yourself tagged.
5 favorite characters poll
Rules: make a poll with five of your all time favourite characters and then tag five people to do the same. See which character is everyone's favourite.
Thanks for the tag @thebansacredbanned, @lasenbyphoenix, and @mademoiselle-red! I'm just doing five favs in canons I currently feel fannish about, not five favs of all time, but anyway.
Open tag! Anyone who wants to do this please do and feel free to tag me <3

813 - The Reprise, Part 2/?
Part One here
Part three here
Masterpost for all parts
A lot has gone down since my last post, I'll try to summarize it all here.
To recap, previously on the Reprise, Part 1: Uncle Li stepped in to stand up for ZZH and c-ent as a whole against CAPA and other shadowy so-called authorities that are trying to manipulate public opinion behind the scenes for their own profit. Weibo kept muting and unmuting his posts, so it got to the point where he threatened to sue CAPA (because he believes Weibo is not responsible for threatening his content) with ZZH to get them to apologize to ZZH and reduce their power and influence over c-ent.
----new update below----
So as of my last post, Uncle Li has been busy at work dealing with CAPA + in contact with ZZH’s family.
Don't worry, he knows what he's doing.
Tumblr media
All this information is compiled from tireless hard work of this user, this user, and other users which will be cited below.
November 25-27, 2021
1. A twitter user posted (in Thai) about Uncle Li’s background
I don’t speak or read Thai, but the gist of what I got was: he’s a famous director near retirement age who is part of a lot of long-standing organizations in media and has connections with the military. He also has a history of investigative journalism and has demonstrated staunch support for his country.
Tumblr media
2. This article from whatsonweibo.com is following the story and posted an update for what’s happened Nov 25-26
3. ZZH and Uncle Li join forces - He gives a voice to ZZH’s family’s struggles
Uncle Li mentioned that he is now in contact with ZZH’s family, and they are both cooperating it seems? He posts some revelations about what’s happened since 813, and it’s really heartbreaking
His mother has been a staunch ally to China’s political party, so being accused of being traitors was awful. People sent Japanese wreaths to his family, harassing him, calling him and his fam traitors, etc.
Tumblr media
TW : suicide - his mother apparently thought about hurting herself seriously due to all the accusations? It’s just awful… he and his family have been harassed immensely since August.
Uncle Li goes on to say that even if anyone, ZZH or his fam or anyone else, are deemed traitors, they must be given a chance to deny these claims and prove themselves. Mistakes happen all the time, and people need to be given chances to rectify those mistakes. Deplatforming and silencing ZZH and his family doesn’t make any sense, and will only hurt their society as a whole.
Video of ZZH and his Ma, he really loves her
The people who stood by ZZH’s side despite all of these threats, harassment, potential blacklisting… they’re really special. The kind of people you’d want to meet even just once in your lives. (Yes I’m implying JunZhe, but also his friends Susu and Xiao Yu, his family, the people who never deleted him from their histories including Sun Xilun (Chengling)).
4. Uncle Li’s videos and weibo posts keep getting muted/unmuted + users who interact with him are getting shadow banned
SO he’s been very active in dismantling CAPA’s perceived narrative that they’re a legitimate organization. Weibo, however, has been randomly muting and unmuting his videos, it looks like programmers are fighting each other to mute and unmute constantly. He emphasizes that he believes Weibo’s execs aren’t behind this, and it’s probably the shady venture people (rich ppl with power) behind the scenes that are trying to silence him and his followers.
He and his team of lawyers are taking tips from netizens + doing their own extensive background research on ZZH’s case and the shadiness of the business dealings behind CAPA. He’s posting very frequently just ROASTING THEM SOME MORE. Some examples are their utter lack of justification for boycotting ZZH because they said their rules for punishing people who act out of line are NOT retroactive. Then why did they punish ZZH when his incident happened in like 2018? Doesn’t make sense. (All of these pieces of evidence have been revealed already btw by many discerning fans. I’ve linked a PDF guide on ZZH’s case created by the wonderful twitter user mentioned above)
Some insiders from CAPA itself are helping Uncle Li build his case. They’ve given him some confidential documents - there’s apparently quite a bit of infighting within the organization itself, which IMO is JUST DESSERTS.
Tumblr media
5. CAPA’s official weibo page turned off commenting
I wonder WHY. They haven’t actually come out to make any statements regarding Uncle Li’s accusations, from what I’ve seen
CAPA also scrubbed their list of leadership from their website, I’m assuming because they’re genuinely concerned now that the tide of public opinion is backing Uncle Li’s claims
Tumblr media
6. Weibo Admin warns Uncle Li indirectly
Uncle Li is stepping on a lot of toes. From what I’ve seen so far, there’s a lot of nefarious groups acting in concert with each other. Weibo + CAPA + ventures business ppl are working in tandem to try and intimidate Uncle Li. Weibo itself posted a warning to not provoke government agencies nor should you try to “whitewash immoral celebrities” (i’m assuming they mean ZZH), or else the platform will mute you
Tumblr media
Uncle Li posted about the conflict of interest with Weibo CEO Wang Gaofei. He’s not only part of the Weibo admin but also the vice chair of CAPA’s livestreaming subcommittee.
It’s also randomly deleting and muting people who are interacting with Uncle Li’s posts, so if you have Weibo and are interacting with his posts, please do it rationally so none of it can be used against you, him, or ZZH. And know that it’s possible the platform will ban you for it :x
7. People’s Communication (Part of the government news agency People’s Daily) published an article questioning the validity of CAPA’s boycott ability - check here for the really long screenshot of their article (in Mandarin)
8. Uncle Li’s absolute sass
A ZZH anti accused Uncle Li of crossing the political, national, and moral line by pursuing this quest, and he just sasses them as any old man would: try harder kid, his lawyers are putting in overtime
Tumblr media
CAPA is taking down their list of leaders, so Uncle Li joked something to the tune of, Not only are they taking down people’s works, but they’re taking down their own leaders - the “takedown” term is the same as when ppl take down or take off works from platforms.
Uncle Li says that if you find his words to be untrue, go ahead and sue him, and if he’s found wrong, he will pay reparations and apologize. He’s so confident of his position (as he should be) that he’s not afraid to get sued by all the shady money dealers.
Uncle Li made a whole post about how CAPA is privately trying to intimidate him, but he stands strong because he believes in what he views is a more just and equal society. He truly believes that this entire struggle will benefit not only CAPA itself, but how entertainment business should be conducted with fairness. He even CALLS OUT the people behind the scenes for “attempting to launch an online campaign against me. That’s very shameless of you. It is also very scheming. You’ve underestimated the power of a just society and underestimated the power of the law. You’ve also given yourself too much credit and you’re being myopic about the success of a day’s victory. It’s true many big verified accounts (on weibo) are keeping silent. I very much understand where they’re coming from. Some of them don’t understand the internal workings of this industry, and some are just observing before taking sides. Many netizens urged me to contact the media myself. That’s not something I want to do currently. [OP note, they instead contacted HIM for interviews]. [...] I understand and don’t blame verified accounts for not supporting me publicly and I also don’t want all the media scrutiny to be on our industry.”
3. He goes on to mention that CAPA’s livestreaming committee has someone who is a VP of a pay-to-chat app and was found to be morally questionable. So it’s ironic that these are the people who are passing judgment as to who gets to be moral and who gets to be immoral
4. He says he will take all the legal responsibility and stand until the end.
What a champion, our Li, our Ye Baiyi, I’m just very concerned for him, I hope no one will try to do anything to him.
9. Uncle Li creates hashtag - “Justice for the people”[人民的公义] & others start speaking ZZH’s name and supporting Li
A film investor posted about how horrific cyberbullying is and dozens of reporters from mainstream media outlets have asked Uncle Li to give interviews.
Weibo refuses to allow his hashtag, “Justice for the people” trend to the top10 hot list even though right now it’s at 160 MILLION views + so many interactions. If you’re over 50million views you’re already on the top trending list. So???? Weibo??? Don’t make it look that obvious that you’re in on it ok?
HaoJingFang, the author who supported ZZH and GJ before, posted a cryptic weibo translated by this user:
The Long Night, she indicated it's the best film she has seen this year. An innocent man was killed by officials and businessmen, and all witnesses and those who investigated were dead one by one. Finally, it is the prosecutor Jiang Yang and his friends who stick to the end with their own lives, seek the truth and defend justice.
Tumblr media
This is hinting at her knowledge and support of ZZH and what happened during the 813 incident - ZZH was also socially "killed" by officials and businessmen, and everyone who tried to stand up for him only made things worse or also got deplatformed (one guy i think tried to question if visiting the shrine at all is a bad thing? and got insta banned). Finally, Uncle Li swooped in to save the day. We'll see how this story ends, no one could possibly write a script like this lol.
10. Uncle Li meeting with official agency leaders on Monday - he will review his materials that he’s gathered with his lawyers with them.
Things are getting very serious, and people are watching and listening. Finally. I'm just so happy that people are FINALLY SAYING HIS NAME. Zhang Zhehan, I'm sorry, what they did to you and the people you love. Not everyone's hands are clean either. The public who quickly jumped on the bandwagon are also at fault. The antis. The water armies. I want this to be a happy ending, even if he decides to not return, I can see that it's a cesspool of special interests who are just using people like him as pawns in their quest for more and more profit, or more and more power. I hope Uncle Li can help.
My thoughts so far, TLDR:
So it looks like Uncle Li is successfully escalating all of the relevant issues up the command chain to even official agencies. I'm glad he's still keeping ZZH as part of the case. Some people accuse him of only using ZZH as a pawn in his greater quest to regulate CAPA and the other shady players industry. However, they gotta keep in mind that legal cases against powerful organizations or engrained ideas and structures need a solid case to represent your goal. And ZZH's is perfect, he did nothing illegal, but suffered massive repercussions due to a corrupt system. And it's easily provable in court.
Forgive me if my comparisons are inaccurate as I am unfamiliar with the court system in China, but as someone in the US, I can liken this to cases such as the landmark case Brown v Board of Education, where the NAACP chose the perfect candidates to argue that the doctrine "separate but equal" is truly unequal. They crafted their case before the Supreme court with Oliver Brown, a local father who wanted his daughter to go to the closest school available instead of having to walk 6 blocks to a bus stop to ride to a school for PoC far away. They specifically chose him to helm the case because he was a male + working father + solid case for his children's education, and knew these points would stand up in court. This ended up with the Supreme Court ruling to desegregate schools, a landmark ruling.
I'm assuming Uncle Li is trying to do something similar by combining his power with ZZH's case, and trying to get a ruling for not only ZZH, but for the c-ent industry as a whole. He firmly believes that he's doing the right thing, and I hope that he won't be harmed in this endeavor. It's truly what we all wanted, someone with power, someone uninvolved, to stand up with ZZH, SAY HIS NAME, and give him his voice back. Fingers crossed.

Sweeping gracefully down from on high, their robes a pure, pristine white, untouched from the dust of the secular world...
How do they do it? Is it a special dirt repelling cloth? A talisman sewn into their robes? An army of servants following them at all times with a change of clothes?
Or is it... something more mundane. Something like Ancient Chinese Fantasy Bleach (all stains removed or your money back!).
(It is 100% also the army of servants, there's no way these characters are scrubbing their own clothes. They'd probably wear less white if they were responsible for their own laundry)
Whether this is because they themselves invented it or because exasperated (and overworked!) support staff or servants invented it for them, this is the 'Cdrama Character Most Likely to Be the Cause of the Invention of Ancient Fantasy China Bleach' poll
Vote for the characters with the best laundry regime! Propaganda, call out posts, and write-in candidates welcome!
