Are you a terf? I cant tell?
Hello Anon, I don't get tumblr messages so this was a surprise. I've ended up writing a long response, but if you're interested in chatting more informally I'll happily chat to you on messages. I might be able to better answer your specific questions that way.
My blog is a collection of things I like or want to share - art, architecture, interior design, pop culture, politics and feminism.
I follow a mixture of blogs on here, and I don't agree 100% with all of them - sometimes our politics differs, sometimes they view the world differently to me, but I enjoy reading a wide range of points of view, and to learn more about myself and others in the process. There is a limit though, I will unfollow people if I start to find their posts repeatedly offensive, for example if they take part in harassment behavior.
If your asking "do I hate trans people" the answer is no, I do not hate trans people.
I'm a radical feminist, I believe that we live in a patriarchal society that needs dismantling. That means being critical of anything that harms or holds back women.
I believe women are oppressed because of our reproductive capabilities*, and this is perpetuated through enforced gender roles.
I believe in the abolition of gender roles, for women to be free from all gendered expectations and free to live in any way they choose.
Currently, women are marginalised within society - they are disadvantaged by society from the day their parents learn they are female.
In the west, girls are fed less, discouraged from physical play, discouraged from practical skill based learning, taught their bodies are to blame for men hurting them, whilst their bodies are also the source of their value.
In other parts of the world girls are aborted or killed just after they're born because they are female. They are cut and sewn up to maintain their value for their future husband. Girls are not allowed to go to school, not allowed to go outside alone, not allowed to dress practically.
I could go on and on listing all the ways that females are oppressed because they are female, but there are hundreds of resources detailing this, on tumblr and beyond.
My priority will always be female first - that's what feminism is - the movement for the liberation of females from patriarchy.
But because being female intersects with other classes, I also support other rights movements. I support disability rights activism, racial equality activism, LGB activism. I support trans people's rights not to be discriminated against.
The fight for female freedom will always be my personal priority, and the basis for my outlook in life.
I hope I have answered your question anon. I'm tired and need to sleep, let me know if you'd like to talk more.
*this does not mean that women who cannot get pregnant, have hysterectomy etc are not women. It is the expectation of these capabilities placed upon females that is the root of patriarchy.

A reader writes:
I’m writing to you today because I have some information to share with you (and your readers) who may still be skeptical that this LGBTQIA+ gender-identity craze is coming for their kids. Some recent interactions online have made me more aware than ever that the movement is spreading in wild and unpredictable ways, and also made me reflect on how, in my own life, even someone like me could have fallen victim to it.
I want to start off by saying that recently, (and ironically, in an attempt to try not to be sucked into the internet as purely a source for doom and gloom: you will see how this backfires on me) I decided to rejoin a fan community surrounding one of my favorite franchises on Twitter. I won’t go into too much detail about which community and the exact specifics, but just know that it’s a popular franchise that’s appropriate for older kids, teens and adults (nothing 18+, nothing for really little ones). As a teen myself I was fairly active in a similar branch of this community on another social media platform (Facebook), and enjoyed it immensely before the platform eventually went more or less defunct as a hot-spot for fan content. Most of the content was fan-created work (like fan-art or fan-fiction) with a little interaction and lots of “DID YOU SEE THE LATEST” kinds of posts.
…
Anyway, to keep it to a minimum, that was then. If you’ve been on the internet any time in the last five years you know that spaces where people just talk about an interest and don’t mix it with politics and activism are becoming few and far between. Even though I knew this, and knew that I wasn’t going to have the same experience in a different place, something sparked an interest in me to go try to reconnect with my internet roots in a different setting. So, I followed some hashtags, quickly found some new followers and settled back to enjoy at least marginally some discussions online that didn’t have to do with Covid and All The Ways We Are All Going To Die.
Then came the teenagers.
Much like when I was a kid, this franchise attracts a lot of younger people. So it was hardly surprising to me to find that many of my new followers were in the 14-18 age range and that people like myself (mid-older 20s) were a sort of senior majority. That was fine- Twitter’s rules after all are 13+, so it’s not unreasonable to assume if you’re part of a popular group that you’ll interact on occasion with minors. That wasn’t the part I found strange. The part I found strange was that all of them, and I repeat, all of them were fans of two things- the franchise, and gender identities.
You can actually almost pinpoint the age range of the 18 and under crowd by how many of them have the following: 1. Pronouns in bio and in username. 2. Gender identity or lack thereof displayed in bio or username. 3. LGBTQ+ sexual orientation displayed in bio or username. etc. etc. etc. I’m not going to dive into it too much, because some might be saying “isn’t that just normal nowadays? Even politicians do that?” Well, you’re not wrong if that’s what you’re thinking. And that’s not the part that disturbs me.
What disturbed me was that, a few weeks after I joined the group, I started noticing an unsettling pattern among many of these teenage users (and many over-teen users, but I’m trying to make a point about the young ones specifically). For a few days, after an interesting bit of news or a trailer or some other thing that unites franchises, the posts in my feed would be primarily things like what I remembered from past experiences: posts about the franchises, theories, speculations, fanart, etc. But, every time things would settle back down into a quiet, normal week, the feeds in my post became almost entirely about one thing: Gender and LGBTQ talking points. I’m going to diverge for one second and say that many people in this group aren’t using a personal, front-facing account for their interactions in this fan-group. They’re mostly using alt-accounts with no real names and faces attached (myself included). And yet, every time the discussion in the feeds died down to where there was just no new stuff about the franchise to talk about, all the conversation slowly but surely shifted back to sexual orientation and gender. From fan-ships of perfect LGB couples to ‘hey I drew this person but as a trans-female!’ to even forgoing pretending to talk about their interests and just discussing their own gender and sex presentation with their other online friends, it became quickly very clear to me that A. I no longer really belonged here and B. Every single one of these kids was obsessed. Every. Single. One.
…
I’m going to digress and talk about myself for a minute to explain just why these examples, particularly that last one, burn a hole in my soul. From the minute I was old enough to remember, I’ve never been one of those typically presenting females. When my sisters and I played dress-up as kids, they played princesses and I played a prince or a witch or whatever was more interesting. In addition to the dolls and barbies I had being one of three girls, I also had an assortment of boy-oriented toys, including action figures, a remote control car and this really cool nerf bow-and-arrow set that I still secretly wish had survived my playing with it because man, my kids are gonna miss out someday. My hair was short because I hated wearing it up and the solution was a bob, and when we spent time with relatives I could be found as far away from my female cousins as possible, hanging out with my male cousins and talking about Legos and Lord of The Rings. I spent 90% of my time reading books and ignoring reality, and didn’t put much effort into my appearance until probably age 13 or later.
And I wished I was a boy.
It wasn’t an all-consuming thought, but I thought it. I wished, many times, when my parents would fuss at me to please stop attempting to climb trees in your Sunday clothes and when my sisters never talked about anything but dolls and tea-parties around their friends that I could be one of the boys. I had always liked the boys and their world better, and I fit into better, and yet there was that little problem (that I was still a girl) that kept me from being accepted into the boy group. The reality was, I was already probably very intelligent for my age (too-well read children can relate) and I took that big-headedness a little too far at times. I was also a very emotional person (still am) and just passionately felt that being a girl and being expected to do girl things was hideous and unfair.
The saving grace? My mom was the same. She’s never been a typical female either, and though as adults we have some clear differences (ironically, I have more stereotypical female interests/talents than her- like a hidden passion for interior decorating and a love of baking and so on) she was there for me, to be able to tell me that no- I didn’t really want to be a boy, I was just a girl who liked sword fights and grass-stains more than ballgowns and tea parties, and that was okay!!! She was proof that there were other girls like me, and that I would find more of them eventually (I did) and, even though we never said so in so many words, that stereotypes and how we fit into them has nothing to do with our innate female and male selves. And so, reassured that I could be female and still be however I wanted, I eventually grew out of those thoughts, and as I matured, found that there were ‘female things’ I connected with that my past self was too young to appreciate.
But, think about all this in a modern context. I’m a happy adult female now, and I was never truly gender-questioning. I just thought, for a while, that boys had more fun than I did, so I wanted to be one. But that, in it of itself, is a thought that’s deep enough for modern gender activists to insist I be transitioned immediately and put on life-altering hormones, never given a chance to grow up or grow out of questioning, and affirmed in my presentation instantly! If I, like that young girl online, had been handed a ‘gender-affirming’ flag and an identity that ‘made sense’ out of why I was different from my peers, I might have jumped on it, especially without the presence of a wise older person to tell me I wasn’t anything different than what she’d been as a child. This is the problem, this is why this kind of thing is so dangerous and toxic and wrong.

A primeira, LGB, diz respeito à orientação sexual do indivíduo. #tbt #avenidapaulista #paradagay #gaypride #gaysp #saopaulo #gls #lgbt #dj #party #bebedourosp #barretos #festadopeaodebarretos #festadopeao (em São Paulo, Brazil) https://www.instagram.com/p/B7rdZeBJCdq/?igshid=qdkylg3vkfa5

Hi Dicta, I have kind of a strange question for you. What would you say is the line between enjoying reading fic about gay couples, and fetishizing gay couples? I see posts every now and then who comment about people enjoying fic featuring gay couples together, or bemoaning how people just ship all same sex characters (or people in real life), together. As someone who can reads multiple, same sex characters in different fandoms, I worry about crossing the line? I hope this ask makes sense.
that’s a tricky question, anon, and an important one. this is gonna be a little off the cuff but i also don’t want to let this languish so here are a few things that i think make a difference:
Do the characters have interiority? If the characters have thoughts and emotions and motivations that have to do with things other than sex and sterotypically gay stuff, that’s a good sign. If they do things because they have a talent or skill for those things or want to develop one, care about how their friends and families will react, are addressing something in their personal history, etc., those are good signs. If they spend all of their time having sex, arranging sex, talking about sex, and occasionally, like shopping and being snarky with the girls and ~being fabulous~? Not a good sign.
Do the characters have complete lives? Do they have jobs, families, friends, roommates, pets, childhood memories, goals, histories, preferences? Do other parts of their identities - class, race, religion, nationality, etc. - shape their lives? That’s a good sign. If the entire construction of their character is about fucking, and if the things they think about and do are only or predominantly related to sex, that’s a bad sign. Being a one-dimensional gay stereotype is also a bad sign. Even if the fic is about them having sex, that doesn’t mean that’s all they do or all they are, and plenty of PWPs capture that.
How do other characters treat them? Do characters within the story treat them as whole, multi-dimensional people? Good sign. Less good: only interacting with the gay characters in ways that have to do with having or arranging for sex (going clubbing, helping them get dressed to go clubbing, getting or giving sex advice, gossiping about sex), only interacting with characters in ways that are obviously villainous and negate the subtlety and complexity of homophobia or erase casual homophobia, treating gay characters as though they don’t have any sexual desire or sex, only interacting with gay characters in ways that play to stereotypes (if it would be at home on queer eye for the straight guy, that’s not a good thing), treating them as though their sexuality is there for others to observe (which implicitly gives the audience permission to do the same thing).
How does the author treat them? If you get the sense that the author is doing the equivalent of smushing two ken dolls together and making them kiss, take a pass. Authors who write good gay fiction, fan or pro, treat their characters with respect and give them the aforementioned interiority and complexity.
How do you treat them? Are you in it to imagine cute boys kissing, or because these are characters you’re attached to for reasons to do with who they specifically are as specific people and/or who you specifically are as a person? Do you think of them as your ‘smol gay sons’ or similar? Do you have a preference for ships and stories that replicate heteronormative dynamics? Do you think they’re so cute you could just smush their cheeks together and it’s adorable to read about them getting happy endings? Are they your literal or emotional wank fodder? If you were watching fic instead of reading it, would your habits resemble those of straight guys who are into lesbian porn? Are the stories you’re reading about specific questions or characters? Or do you prefer things that would qualify as any two guys?
Why are you reading slash? Like why slash specifically? Why not het, why not femslash, why not profic? What is it that you get out of reading m/m fanfic? Is it that it turns you on? That you get off on it? That you think of gay men as harmless and therefore feel safe reading about their sexuality? That you think gay men are fabulous and fashionable and bitchy and fun and want to vicariously hang out with them because it amuses you? That you think of gay men as hypersexual and so assume they do a lot of things that other people wouldn’t plausibly do? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you might be a fetishizer.
How do you treat LGBTQ people? Not characters, people. Do you know what the laws for lgbtq people are like where you live? What economic, social, institutional, and safety-related challenges they’re likely to run into? Do you know whether the characters you love so much could, if they moved to your town, be evicted, fired, or jailed for being gay? Do you know how they would get treated by your local police department, and who they can and can’t turn to if they feel unsafe? Do you know what kinds of experiences they might have going on dates at restaurants, bars, and other businesses in your community and where they would or wouldn’t feel safe? If you have elected representatives, do you call them when issues affecting lgbtq communities come up? Do you know whether issues affecting lgbtq communities have come up lately? Do you know whether trans people could go to the bathroom where you work or go to school? Do you know whether trans and lgb people’s health needs are covered by your insurance? Do you know what the unemployment and murder rates are for trans people in your area? Do you know which health care providers in your area are lgbtq friendly? Do you know what it means for a health care provider to be lgbtq friendly and why it matters? If an lgbtq teenager got kicked out of their house in your town, what resources would be available to them? How have gay people in your city, state, district, country, etc., been treated at different points at time? If you’ve read about gay men having sex, do you know what steps gay men take to prevent HIV/AIDS? What do you know about the history of the HIV/AIDS epidemic and how it would have affected your characters? How much do you know about the side effects of ARVs for the treatment of HIV/ADS, or about the resurgence of comorbid STIs in gay communities? If a gay teenager came to you for advice, do you understand enough about the actual anatomy of gay sex to give accurate, helpful advice that doesn’t rest on what you’ve read in the magical fic world where everyone’s prostate is just past their anus (it isn’t) or where anything vaguely damp can be used for lube? What do you do when you see homophobia or transphobia? Are you confident that you could recognize subtle homophobia or transphobia? Do you have relationships with lgbtq people that they would describe as important to them? In thinking about all of these questions, did you always or almost always picture white, middle- and upper-class gay men? How much do you know, and how much do you care, about lgbtq people? Or are you just here for the squee and the orgasms?
For each of these, there are obvious exceptions. It’s definitely not necessarily an issue of fetishization to be turned on by or get off on slash. It’s not a bad thing to want gay characters to have happy endings. It isn’t about one specific fic; many of us read the occasional fluffy PWP and, contrary to what tumblr might have you believe, that one thing you do occasionally doesn’t define you. This also isn’t one-reader-fits-all; it’s a really different thing to be a queer reader who wants to see gay characters get to be happy for once because homophobia is real and constant and horrible and it’s an emotional balm to believe in the possibility of queer happiness than it is to be a straight reader who wants to see gay characters get to be happy because angst is sad and reading about homophobia is sad and you want to and have the privilege to avoid things that make you sad. But I do think it’s a decent round up, maybe with an emphasis on the first two and the last two questions.
And anon? Whether you agree with all of the questions or not, and whether you like all of your answers or not, I’m glad - as a queer person and as a fellow fan - that you’re asking. The question itself is not an answer, but asking it and taking the time to be thoughtful about it is definitely a good sign.

Marriage Equality in Ireland by Cam
Three months ago Ireland voted in marriage equality by a huge margin. I was asked about my experience with campaigning for a yes vote. I wanted to speak out because I have a voice, not every queer person does, and not doing so didn't sit well with me. It started out simply enough, in reaching out to individuals and organisations who might come together to form an activist base in Waterford, but by the closing weeks of the campaign I had made myself such a visible and known supporter of marriage equality, engaging people on the subject became literally all I did. People came up to me in the street, in shops, pubs and even the chippers at 3am, not to disparage or congratulate, but with their questions and fears. Some people questioned if other areas of life would change, about religion and the right to refuse service, if men could raise children, if gay people could. Others asked why same sex relationships needed further recognition, not necessarily nicely, or what Trans people had to do with it all anyway. These were questions they were unsure of asking elsewhere, and for good reason. I would respond "I understand what you're saying, but..." and then launch into another educative discussion. I lied, I don't understand. I don't understand why my humanity was debatable and my relationships questionable. I don't understand how that referendum, and the lawyers of the right, created an environment where homophobes were soothed for the trauma they must have been going through. I don't understand why our broadcasting legislation still panders to right wing "offense" when the Dáil was given opportunity to change it, nor do I understand the BAI's version of "balance". I especially don't understand why marriage has been treated as the end goal of the LGBTI rights movement.
In the past year GLEN reported 88% of LGB people experienced workplace discrimination, with lesbians and bisexuals reporting higher instances than gay men. Workplace discrimination relating to sexual orientation or gender identity is still explicitly legal in most "religious, educational or medical institution[s]".
TENI also released a report this year, in which 88% of trans respondents reported identity based verbal abuse. 19% had been victims of violence. We have no legislation relating to bias-motivated violence, or hate crimes. Last November the High Court ruled that a Georgian man seeking asylum on the grounds of his sexuality had not received proper consideration of his claim, his sexuality, or the threat he faced in Georgia. This is not abnormal in our system, rulings related to LGBTI people can be appalling and contradictory and there is no national policy for the treatment of LGBTI asylum cases. In one case, a number of years ago, an asylum seeker with an income of €19.10 a week had his sexuality judged on his lack of knowledge of the interior of the George. That's just a taste, the most tangible ways I could think to mention, that LGBTI people are not equal in Ireland. We still allow for non-consensual medical intervention to 'fix' intersex newborns, and Youth Defence to teach about sexuality in publicly funded classrooms. This country does some crap stuff, and you can easily draw the link between the treatment of queer people and other minorities. Marriage Equality and Gender Recognition are no doubt incredible achievements, with far reaching effects, but we're not even close to finished here, we've just changed the landscape for activism in the future.
