The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

Notorious BIG once said “Mo’ Money, Mo’ Problems”.  I suspect Notorious BIG has also never owned a 1995 Ford Fairmont with a 5 litre V8 with 23-year-old mobile sprinkler for a cooling system. But I understand the sentiment.

I have owned a bevvy of cheap old cars in my 25 years around the sun, including a 1996 Alfa Romeo 146 boxer, a 1994 Rover 220 GTi, a 1997 Subaru Legacy GT-B and a 1992 Mitsubishi Delica. My current curse is the aforementioned Fairmont with the 23-year-old, front-mounted, Niagara Falls feature. These vehicles have all caused me enormous amounts of financial and emotional strife, but if I’m totally honest; I love them for it.

I remember once when a few mates and I were driving from Sydney to a town that shall remain nameless but happens to be the “Duelling Banjos” capital of Southern NSW. My car at the time, “Red Keith”, was a 1995 Commodore VS wagon with a dodgy manual conversion and huge extractors. It was rough, but a lot of fun. 2 full playthroughs of the Bee Gee’s greatest hits into our journey down the deserted Australian outback roads, our clutch began to slip quite badly. We, of course, had zero tools, our phones were about as good as a small brick out here and not a soul had been seen since Night Fever. Put a man who drives a 2018 Lexus in this situation and what would they do? Panic. And quite rightly so. But not a man who is well versed in the art of having his cheap car break down on him in a remote location. No, we’re used to the chaos. We live for it.

Especially when you’ve got a Ver stashed away on your passenger seat. Ver is a friend of mine named after TV’s MacGyver for reasons that will reveal themselves momentarily. First, He diagnosed a faulty clutch plate. How the hell could he get parts for that out here? By sniffing through the chip crumbs and shoe sand on the floor of course! He came up with a broken set of headphones and some cigarettes. Ver slithered under the car while the rest of us went to see who could hit the fence post with a rock, first.

Both engines are hooked up to a a lightweight, aluminium, in-house developed 8-speed auto that delivers power to the rear wheels.

If any of this sounds familiar, that’s because it is. These are the same combos that drive Kia’s killer Stinger sports sedan.

And — surprise, surprise — the two cars share the same platform.

What’s Genesis got that Kia doesn’t?

How to Find Your Style in Photography

How do I find my style? It’s a question that inevitably comes up for almost every photographer actively trying to improve their images. It’s a tough question, at first. Because at first, you don’t really know what that means. Many photographers think that “style” is just equal to how someone might edit their images.

They start going down the rabbit hole, curious about how their favorite photographers ended up with those nice blue tones, or desaturated browns on their feeds, or how they have just that little bit of fade in every image.

When someone is starting out in photography, they don’t know the trends that have come and gone. The permanence of certain visual language elements that have stood the test of time. Or the kitsch crazes that have been and passed.

All of that is okay because that’s the journey we’re all on. The shiny stuff aside, to really find your style in photography, one has to know what this actually means.

What Style Is

Style is not a specific “thing”. It’s not something you can just decide to have or not have. Rather, think of style as a toolbox. A toolbox that has been refined over time.

When an apprentice builder starts his first job, he does so with a few tools he thinks he might need. Eventually, he finds tasks that he doesn’t have the tools for. He figures things out and adds more tools. Along the way, he finds better, more efficient tools to do the same tasks, and so he swaps out his old tools over time.

Eventually, after having nailed thousands of nails and making hundreds of walls, he knows how to do it in his way, fast. Efficient. With style and grace, even. He’s become a master at that task and he sticks to what he knows.

Style is a lot like that. It looks a lot like the process of mastery. Your toolbox isn’t just things like cameras, lenses, and drones. It’s not just your choices of blue tones or red tones. It’s not just whether you like sharp images or blurry ones.

It’s also more abstract – it’s what you shoot, how you shoot it, and why. Do you shoot landscapes more than urban scenes? Portraits over street? How do you shoot those scenes? Wide? Tight? Abstract? Why do you choose to shoot those scenes and why did you decide to do it in that way?

The answer to those questions is the genesis of “style” – the foundation of your toolkit.

It’s About What You Value in Life

A mix of knowing what you don’t know, and an alignment of that knowledge to the things you value in your own life.

For me, photography is about two things: Adventure and minimalism.

My first camera was given to me by my ex-girlfriend. We’d chatted about wanting our relationship to have more adventure, and a camera was a great excuse to get out in the world and start documenting them. I’ve been addicted to chasing new experiences ever since.

But I’m also a minimalist. I put a lot of value on the things I bring in to my life. So on a more tactical level in my images, I try very hard to lean in to simple scenes. Scenes that have only 1 focus point, scenes that are immediately understandable and don’t require a lot of abstraction to pull meaning from.

I do this because I’m thoughtful about the value I place on my time in real life, and subsequently, I’m cognizant of your time too.

Of course, this, like all things in photography, is generally a guideline, not a rule, but it’s something I aim for, and it’s also something that took me a long time of practice, reflection, and a lot (over 100,000) of crappy frames to uncover, and I’m still (and forever) working on it. This is the state of my toolbox right now, and it’s always going to be changing.

What value do you give photography in your life?

One of my photography idols, Alex Strohl, talks about his work being symbolic of his love towards water. How it features in his images, the types of tones he uses, everything. I’ll let you discover why that is in your own discovery of his work, but this is the genesis of it, and I think the clarity of meaning he’s given his work is great.

It Begins with Inspiration

Start with why and find inspiration (from inside or outside yourself) until you discover the answer. The problem for most beginners (but it never really goes away for anyone) is that you don’t know what you don’t know. There are so many places to gather your inspiration from. So many influences you can apply to your own photography.

Don’t think Instagram. Look wider. Look deeper.

Expose yourself to as much inspiration you can and take note of what you like and give value to that. Maybe it’s the story of your childhood. The visual treatment of your favorite movie. Your favorite quote from your grandma. A memory of a trip you’ll never forget.

How can you turn your life’s experiences into images?

Focus on the why and all else will follow. All the other shiny things like gear, settings, and post-processing will be so much better once you have your why.

But of course, look for other things that inspire you too – visual language techniques, color palettes, bokeh, focal lengths, big scenes, little scenes, countries, films, everything. They all have a part to play.

The Clarity of Synthesis

After you’ve immersed yourself in inspiration and made a list of the things you love and are inspired by, synthesize them into something meaningful. Make sense of your inspiration. Give yourself some maxims to operate by, even if you just write them down and never use them, at least they’ll be in your subconscious for when you’re out in the field.

Once you’ve defined what you’re inspired by, it’s much easier to find and make those images in the real world.

It might seem silly to make a vision board of your own style. It might seem strange to write down that you like taking photos of animals because you miss your dog at home. The act of getting it down into the real world, to synthesize it, gives you clarity that most other people just don’t have. And when someone asks you “why do you take photographs?”, you’ll have a killer answer for them that will make you feel great and inspire them to think about their own work, too.

The Art of Experimentation

Once you’ve synthesized your style, you’ve reached the hardest part of it all. Putting yourself out there. It’s time to test it out. At first, alone. Spend time working on it as much as you can. But eventually, with people. Because art really isn’t art until it’s shared, and feedback isn’t really feedback unless someone else is giving it.

Yes, it’s scary. Yes, people might not like it. But if you like it, then maybe it’s not for them, and that’s okay. But for the people who do like it, it might just be the best f***ing thing in the world, and without putting it out there, no one would never know.

What I love about this stage though, is the impermanence of experimentation. If it’s just an experiment, then it’s temporary. It should be. It means you can take it away or revert back to something else. But it also means that you can make it even better if it’s successful and it works.

It’s imperative that every creative sees life in this way. To have the courage to try something new, even if it’s scary. Change is the only method for growth.

The Value of Repetition

And once you take your experiment, shown it to the world and both you and the world loves it, refine it. Work on it some more. Keep getting better and better at that thing, because it’s here that the builder becomes a Master builder.

It’s here that you can see the finesse in the quality of work. The smooth joins and the perfect vertical lines. It’s also after mastering something that you can see the finesse in the quality of other people’s work and add that to your own inspiration too. It’s the best of all worlds.

And Then Start Again

Because creativity has ebbs and flows. Ups and downs. Sure things and irrational fears. Sometimes you need to just drop everything and start again. Sometimes that’s necessary to create the great work you’ll do in the future. It’s totally fine. It was all an experiment anyway.

After all, your toolbox might be a big one. Hell, it might even be well organized. But just like creativity, the contents never really stay the same forever.

They start going down the rabbit hole, curious about how their favorite photographers ended up with those nice blue tones, or desaturated browns on their feeds, or how they have just that little bit of fade in every image.

When someone is starting out in photography, they don’t know the trends that have come and gone. The permanence of certain visual language elements that have stood the test of time. Or the kitsch crazes that have been and passed.

All of that is okay because that’s the journey we’re all on. The shiny stuff aside, to really find your style in photography, one has to know what this actually means.

What Style Is

Style is not a specific “thing”. It’s not something you can just decide to have or not have. Rather, think of style as a toolbox. A toolbox that has been refined over time.

When an apprentice builder starts his first job, he does so with a few tools he thinks he might need. Eventually, he finds tasks that he doesn’t have the tools for. He figures things out and adds more tools. Along the way, he finds better, more efficient tools to do the same tasks, and so he swaps out his old tools over time.

Eventually, after having nailed thousands of nails and making hundreds of walls, he knows how to do it in his way, fast. Efficient. With style and grace, even. He’s become a master at that task and he sticks to what he knows.

Style is a lot like that. It looks a lot like the process of mastery. Your toolbox isn’t just things like cameras, lenses, and drones. It’s not just your choices of blue tones or red tones. It’s not just whether you like sharp images or blurry ones.

It’s also more abstract – it’s what you shoot, how you shoot it, and why. Do you shoot landscapes more than urban scenes? Portraits over street? How do you shoot those scenes? Wide? Tight? Abstract? Why do you choose to shoot those scenes and why did you decide to do it in that way?

The answer to those questions is the genesis of “style” – the foundation of your toolkit.

It’s About What You Value in Life

A mix of knowing what you don’t know, and an alignment of that knowledge to the things you value in your own life.

For me, photography is about two things: Adventure and minimalism.

My first camera was given to me by my ex-girlfriend. We’d chatted about wanting our relationship to have more adventure, and a camera was a great excuse to get out in the world and start documenting them. I’ve been addicted to chasing new experiences ever since.

But I’m also a minimalist. I put a lot of value on the things I bring in to my life. So on a more tactical level in my images, I try very hard to lean in to simple scenes. Scenes that have only 1 focus point, scenes that are immediately understandable and don’t require a lot of abstraction to pull meaning from.

I do this because I’m thoughtful about the value I place on my time in real life, and subsequently, I’m cognizant of your time too.

Of course, this, like all things in photography, is generally a guideline, not a rule, but it’s something I aim for, and it’s also something that took me a long time of practice, reflection, and a lot (over 100,000) of crappy frames to uncover, and I’m still (and forever) working on it. This is the state of my toolbox right now, and it’s always going to be changing.

What value do you give photography in your life?

One of my photography idols, Alex Strohl, talks about his work being symbolic of his love towards water. How it features in his images, the types of tones he uses, everything. I’ll let you discover why that is in your own discovery of his work, but this is the genesis of it, and I think the clarity of meaning he’s given his work is great.

It Begins with Inspiration

Start with why and find inspiration (from inside or outside yourself) until you discover the answer. The problem for most beginners (but it never really goes away for anyone) is that you don’t know what you don’t know. There are so many places to gather your inspiration from. So many influences you can apply to your own photography.

Don’t think Instagram. Look wider. Look deeper.

Expose yourself to as much inspiration you can and take note of what you like and give value to that. Maybe it’s the story of your childhood. The visual treatment of your favorite movie. Your favorite quote from your grandma. A memory of a trip you’ll never forget.

How can you turn your life’s experiences into images?

Focus on the why and all else will follow. All the other shiny things like gear, settings, and post-processing will be so much better once you have your why.

But of course, look for other things that inspire you too – visual language techniques, color palettes, bokeh, focal lengths, big scenes, little scenes, countries, films, everything. They all have a part to play.

The Clarity of Synthesis

After you’ve immersed yourself in inspiration and made a list of the things you love and are inspired by, synthesize them into something meaningful. Make sense of your inspiration. Give yourself some maxims to operate by, even if you just write them down and never use them, at least they’ll be in your subconscious for when you’re out in the field.

Once you’ve defined what you’re inspired by, it’s much easier to find and make those images in the real world.

It might seem silly to make a vision board of your own style. It might seem strange to write down that you like taking photos of animals because you miss your dog at home. The act of getting it down into the real world, to synthesize it, gives you clarity that most other people just don’t have. And when someone asks you “why do you take photographs?”, you’ll have a killer answer for them that will make you feel great and inspire them to think about their own work, too.

The Art of Experimentation

Once you’ve synthesized your style, you’ve reached the hardest part of it all. Putting yourself out there. It’s time to test it out. At first, alone. Spend time working on it as much as you can. But eventually, with people. Because art really isn’t art until it’s shared, and feedback isn’t really feedback unless someone else is giving it.

Yes, it’s scary. Yes, people might not like it. But if you like it, then maybe it’s not for them, and that’s okay. But for the people who do like it, it might just be the best f***ing thing in the world, and without putting it out there, no one would never know.

What I love about this stage though, is the impermanence of experimentation. If it’s just an experiment, then it’s temporary. It should be. It means you can take it away or revert back to something else. But it also means that you can make it even better if it’s successful and it works.

It’s imperative that every creative sees life in this way. To have the courage to try something new, even if it’s scary. Change is the only method for growth.

The Value of Repetition

And once you take your experiment, shown it to the world and both you and the world loves it, refine it. Work on it some more. Keep getting better and better at that thing, because it’s here that the builder becomes a Master builder.

It’s here that you can see the finesse in the quality of work. The smooth joins and the perfect vertical lines. It’s also after mastering something that you can see the finesse in the quality of other people’s work and add that to your own inspiration too. It’s the best of all worlds.

And Then Start Again

Because creativity has ebbs and flows. Ups and downs. Sure things and irrational fears. Sometimes you need to just drop everything and start again. Sometimes that’s necessary to create the great work you’ll do in the future. It’s totally fine. It was all an experiment anyway.

After all, your toolbox might be a big one. Hell, it might even be well organized. But just like creativity, the contents never really stay the same forever.

1 Year Lexus GS450h Ownership Report/Notes - The Long-Post No One Asked For

Foreword; my grammar/spelling is not fantastic, I've added tl;dr bits on every heading if you don't want to read the whole lot.

I thought people might be interested in an account on owning a relatively high mileage (200K+ kms) Lexus Hybrid and it's about as boring as you'd expect.

Why the 450h over literally any other car? I Found that this ticked the largest amount of boxes for a car in my price range. I picked this up for $11500 with a full Lexus Dealership service history and 3 year limited warranty (Engine parts etc). I was in the market for either a Sedan or Wagon with good amenities and solid reliability with decent performance. Other cars that ticked a few of these boxes were;

-XR6 - Too uncomfortable, at the price point there's a fair chance of getting a real piece of garbage, a bit of a "Bogan chariot" and there's simply less features in this price range. I couldn't opt for the XR6 Turbo as i'm a P Plater in Victoria and it's restricted.

-VW Passat - Ticks almost all of the boxes, however reliability was a bit too concerning and after hearing about failure costs i was scared away.

-IS350 - Just the GS but a little slower and a little less comfortable.

I Opted for the GS450h due to the service history being pretty comprehensive, the good performance, and features. I emailed the previous owner (DO NOT DO THIS) as the car came with all of the original sale documents and i was curious about his experience, he used the car to visit minesites and the distance was mostly covered in a span of 3 years travelling Australian Highways. The performance, and i know i'm risking my sweet sweet Karma for saying this, is solid. The car doesn't hide the fact that it weighs almost 2 tonnes and is a hybrid CVT, but it still drives extremely well. I personally think the CVT is perfectly fine for this car, and the slowly building engine noise when you slowly floor it in the car is pretty satisfying. It will still do a sub 6 second 0-100KM/h (Measured 5.8, a far cry from the 5.4 advertised unfortunately, however to be expected from a higher mileage car). It corners "OK" for the weight and size, however the car truly shines with the effortless acceleration. The weird feeling of constant acceleration until well over 200Km/h doesn't get old. The biggest negative with the performance, which i can understand, is that the traction control automatically will stay on if the car ever exceeds 50km/h, i can see why it's designed like this as it can be a bit sketchy in the wet. The biggest pro would be the ride quality which is still absolutely fantastic. The car is quiet and comfortable at almost any speed, it does get restless cruising at under 50km/h though. The amenities as well for a car at this price point are pretty unreal, with radar cruise and heated/vented seats being the best features. There's still not a single rattle, as to be expected with the Lexus build quality and hybrid drive train.

Maintenance Summary: During my 1 year of ownership i have covered 23535kms and will drive relatively hard. The car has been serviced twice during ownership, once at 205000Kms and again at 215000kms. Upon purchase the car had no real issues, there's quite a lot of minor paint damage which looks pretty noticeable, and the car will scratch easier than any other one I've owned/lived with (Including my old 2000 Corolla) there seems to be something a bit off with this paint that causes extremely easy scratching/chips from rocks. I've had the brakes replaced and for anyone looking to get into the brand, people WILL try charge a premium for brakes "because it's a lexus/exotic" and i worry that this may turn people off the brand. I do think it's entirely reasonable for some items of maintenance though so this isn't an all encompassing negative with ownership.

TL;DR 2x Services ($195 at Toyota for Both).

Front Brake Pads ($287.80 Pads for Lube Mobile to do them at work).

2x Tyres (Potenza RE003s' - $578.00 when i guttered the car in the wet).

Breakdowns: I've actually managed to have two breakdowns owning the car which were pretty damn frightening and i would at the very least be cautious of these when purchasing a hybrid vehicle. The first one was a bit strange where the car didn't turn on a few times (Didn't crank for some reason) and threw a check engine light as soon as it started. I immediately thought this was due to the entire battery pack failing and shit myself as it's extremely expensive to replace. After taking the car to Lexus for an inspection they couldn't pinpoint what caused the error and assumed that the starter battery was close to flat when i tried starting. The car does throw an error message if you try switch it off with low batteries though so it was a weird case.

The second breakdown (If you can call it that) was a sudden failure of a wiring harness for the regenerative braking. The car did throw a check engine light up for this and unfortunately RACV (Roadside assistance in Victoria, Australia) could not read the error code so i intimately drove it to Lexus. The wiring harness was $85.00 and i was charged 30 minutes labor. The part was also shipped overnight which was extremely helpful and surprising (Part in Sydney).

TL;DR - 1x Phantom Breakdown (No cost) - 1 Wiring failure ($135.00)

Summary - Ownership is about as bland as you'd expect out of a heavy hybrid sedan. The feel of the car has aged pretty well, despite how dated the interior can feel (WOOD IN A LOT OF PLACAES). The exterior looks nice and is one of the last non-spindle grille Lexus cars you can own without it feeling super out-dated. Performance is pretty good, and better than almost anything other P-Platers drive in Victoria in a straight line.
