Major League Coach (Starfinder Archetype)

It may seem incongruous to see a sports-themed archetype in something as nerdy as a tabletop RPG, but you’d be surprised by the overlap of interests out there. What’s more, sports are hardly limited to chasing a ball around a field. Indeed, they also include combat sports, racing, and even esports.

With that in mind, it only makes sense that the skill set of a coach for teams of such games would apply well to the adeventuring life. After all, they typically have intimate knowledge of their team’s strengths and weaknesses, a good mind for grand strategy and on the fly tactics, not to mention the charisma to inspire and motivate.

Of course, this begs the question of why a coach would be adventuring. Perhaps the game centers around the exploits of such a team both on and off the field, or maybe they retired from that life but still apply their skills in the valley. Or maybe they’re still doing it, either treating adventuring as a side gig, or perhaps the adventuring they are doing IS the sport. It is a wide galaxy, after all, and plenty of places might have blood sport resembling adventurous exploits.

Either way, a Major League Coach brings out the best in their team, no matter what role they find themselves in.

Like all coaches, these instructors like to huddle up with their team to remind them of possible dangers and challenges throughout the day, giving them a better ability to react to combat starting or notice and avoid hidden threats.

They also have learned to apply their various sporting techniques to the battlefield, urging their allies to make accurate long shots, react again to strike foes, duck and cover against hostile attacks, and endure pain to keep fighting. At first, they only know one such teaching, but can expand it later.

The most legendary of coaches are so good at commanding their allies to move and act as one that they actually learn how to cast a time manipulation spell, granting their allies a flurry of actions in mere moments.

There are so many ways to interpret this archetype and apply it to different classes. A biohacker or nanocyte, for example, might work to keep their team in tip top shape with medicine and supplements (or was forced to retire after accusations of doping), envoys and solarians might be charismatic team leaders, martial classes might have once been players themselves, and so on. Any class can take this archetype whether they are a mechanic that keeps their racer’s vehicle in tip top shape, or a precog analyzing possibilities to give them a road to victory. The flexibility of whether you get certain play abilities also means you can lean into or out of the archetype based on the needs of the team. Naturally, however, this archetype works best for builds that focus on buffing and supporting allies.

There are a lot of coaching styles out there, from supportive to tough love to more cold and demanding styles, but all push those in their care to be the best they can be. A good coach may be tough on their players, but they also recognize their potential and work to encourage it. A bad coach, however, might berate players for failure, or push them past the point of safety to get results.

“True. I’m Franklen Moss. These are Videl Jessope, Rubin Murdoch, Oisin Esselrum, Juvi Hartnilf, Lexon Gordem, Brad Hoff, Ren Morwen, Bedam Joshnick, Mira Glenns, Ava Dupree, and Rupert Alench. We’re the Hawkeyes.”

“We don’t even know why,” Moss said, voice shaking. “I mean, sure, we’re dangerous. But we’re also useful—”

The Hawkeyes looked awed and terrified. “Knowing doesn’t really help us feel better,” Juvi said in a depressed voice.

“At least we know that Balmorra might be free of the Imperials soon.”
