I love translated analysis 😭
Hello! Considering chap 126, I've seen in some analysis posts people saying for Hanji there was something on the other side of if she stop fighting: "I wish we could just live together", but for Levi, there seems to be nothing and that's why he said "what's left if we just run and hide"? Can you please share your version of translation as well as your thoughts?
Hello! Like whatever analysis I do, I just have to point out this will probably be biased towards Levihan but, you can choose to just take the information or you can choose to accept my ‘take’ or my interpretation too.
It’s up to you. (But for me, I’m going down with this ship.)
Tumblr media
いっそ二人でここで暮らそうか: Which was translated to English as “Why don’t we just live here together, right Levi?” So honestly, it is an accurate translation so there’s really nothing much to think about here.
Except the adverb いっそ. I actually ended up looking into this adverb a bit because it doesn’t reflect in the English translation. Like you could just take that word out and the whole sentence would still mean the same thing:  “Why don’t we just live here together, right Levi?”
I know there are some translations that translate this as “I would rather we just live here together Levi,” and ‘rather’ can be a rough approximation of  いっそ but I don’t think “I would rather we just live here together Levi” captures the translation either because Hange is actively inviting him to live with her in the forest in the scene up in the actual Japanese translation.
So looking at other examples using いっそ, there are certain elements or emotions in speech which tend to be depicted by such word and I think we could actually look into this word to infer how Hange was feeling at that time when she said it.
So going into linguistics and word usage:
Disclaimer: I am not a native Japanese speaker, any research I found here and analysis of the word usage are from other people (actual Japanese people), not mine, and I can leave the links down there if anyone wants to check it out.
Before this, I was aware that  いっそ is generally used in Japan by people to joke around, or when frustrated to say stuff in the context of:
“I hate my job. Why don’t I just quit my job and just do some other bullshit which I really wanted to do?”
“Why don’t I just quit school and travel the world?”
But really, it’s an adverb I didn’t think too much of before cause I wasn’t Levihan trash then
And here’s where it gets a little interesting. I was actually reading through articles about this word and there are actually implications to adding  いっそ when you suggest these outrageous claims that you’re going to ‘quit your job’ or ‘quit school’
「中途半端をやめて、思い切り~する」<--- So the writer puts this as the most accurate meaning to “ いっそ” based on a quick analysis of the evolution of the Japanese term which in English can mean:
“To stop something half way and to do X to your heart’s content”
Which Hange’s case means: “To run away from the whole war scenario and just live in the forest to one’s hearts content” Basically the main implication of this is HANGE WANTS TO DO IT. HANGE MIGHT ACTUALLY REALLY WANT TO DO IT.
Like she really, preferably seriously wants to run away to the forest with Levi. Like I have gone through other translations using  「いっそ 」
何かに迷ったりしているときに「いっそのこと、~しちゃえば」と言われると、少し勇気が出る気がします。
The author ends this with: When someone is lost with how to go about something,  「いっそのこと、~しちゃえば」, it helps them feel braver or at least it hypes them up.
And I just think that  「いっそ 」 is just an adverb which really helps people look bad at what they would have wanted to do? Or it’s one of those phrases which kinda express those few moments when people are going about the stress of their daily life and the monotony of it and think “What if I just drop all these right now and do what I actually wanted to do?”
And I honestly really believe there are ‘wishful thinking’ implications here because of the amount of time  「いっそ 」has been translated to mean “I wish...” so another acceptable translation for Hange’s phrase “ いっそ二人でここで暮らそうか” is “I wish we could just live here together.”
And if you really wanna push the agenda...
Since  「いっそ 」can actually mean “to our hearts content,” you can actually push it to mean “I wish we could live here to our heart’s content Levi”
But honestly the only point I wanna make here is because people tend to say “HANGE ONLY SAID THAT BECAUSE SHE WAS TIRED” but really after  「いっそ 」? After  いっそ二人で? Which literally means “I wish.... JUST THE BOTH OF US... we could live together. So she puts the  「いっそ 」right before the  二人 (TWO OF US TOGETHER).
So I dunno but if she didn’t actually dream of living cottage core with Levi, there were so many other ways she could have phrased it and there were so many other ways she could have joked around while tired.
She didn’t have to say “THE TWO OF US LIVE TOGETHER I WISH” Did she? I’m pretty sure if I was tired and alone with some very casual friend I probably would not be declaring my wish to happily live with them too.
Check the Japanese analysis here
Tumblr media
Okay, so about this one.このまま、逃げ隠れて、なにが残る
First glance translation: If we just run away and hide like this, what will be left?”
Looking at the English translation: “If we keep running and hiding, what will that get us?”
So looking back at this,  なにが残る does not necessarily mean “what will that get us?”. It can mean “what will be left if we run away and hide?” So honestly this could also be interpreted as Levi thinking back to their important roles in the war not necessarily how useless or dumb of a wish it is to run away to the forest (which the English translation insinuates).
What he could have been saying here is “Okay, I recognize that you wanna run away in the forest but if you do that, will there really be much left of the world for us to live in?”
And so looking back at all of this... Did Levi actually reject her here?
This actually opens up another thought bunny in my head. Were Levi and Hange already aware of their feelings at this point in time?

Levi's regrets in manga 136 - LeviHan's IF
*
This is a manga analysis. Levi and Hange's dynamics in the animation and the manga differ drastically.
If you believe there is more to their story as well as their individual character development than meet the eye, I highly advise you to ditch the animation for the manga. With all due respect to Mappa, but the final season erases almost every romantic hint between Levi and Hange, along with the twists in their story arcs.
Please brace for a ride. LeviHan in the manga is as complex as it is captivating. The complexity is further muddled with sloppy translations. I will provide the original Japanese versions of key lines where necessary.
*
Previously, before the forest scene, Levi was bent on killing Zeke to avenge his fallen comrades, fulfilling his oath to Erwin.
The first time Zeke escaped, Levi reaffirmed his oath to Erwin on the rooftop, and laid Erwin to rest.
The second time Zeke escaped, Levi was severely injured, and Hange came to his rescue.
Hange held Levi to her chest, jumped into the river and fled to a forest.
Tumblr media
*
Let's begin with the forest scene in chapter 126. It is a turning point in Levi's oath arc.
Levi was already awake when Hange attended to his injury. In an intimate moment, he cracked open his good eye to look at her when she wasn't aware.
He was quietly listening to Hange, as he always did.
Tumblr media
Hange speculated that Zeke planned to use Eren's Titan power to inflict catastrophe. Later, on the aircraft, Levi told Pieck that killing Zeke might end the Rumbling. The Rumbling did cease briefly after he chopped off Zeke's head.
Hange was also concerned about their fate as the last two veterans of Survey Corps. The only option for survival seemed to be running away and abandoning their duties.
Lastly, and most importantly, unaware that he was listening to her the whole time, she murmured:
"Why not we live here together, Levi?"
In Japanese culture, living together usually suggests romance or a relationship.
Tumblr media
Note the white bar right under this panel.
It's a timer bar, indicating the passage of an uncertain, usually long, amount of time.  Given that Hange had rebuilt the broken cart by the time Levi sat up, I'd estimate at least an hour had passed.
The fact that Levi cracked open his good eye and clearly heard Hange's soliloquy — from her speculation about Zeke to her unintended confession — proves that he had been wide awake.
It makes me wonder what Levi was thinking while pretending to be asleep.
One could only speculate.
I believe Levi was most likely imaging — as anyone would after hearing a shocking suggestion — the scenario of abandoning their duties to live together, only to then remember his oath to Erwin.
This internal conflict explains why he remained motionless.
Tumblr media
It was the sudden Rumbling sound and Hange's scream that stopped Levi's from continuing to feign sleep.  When their eyes met, he averted his gaze and asked about Zeke's whereabouts.
Tumblr media
See how Levi tried to sound angry and eager to kill Zeke as a way to strengthen his determination, only after lying quietly there and allowing himself to be torn about this for such a long time?
Hange uncharacteristically blushed upon realizing that Levi heard her suggestion, which is another clue that "living together" goes beyond friendship.
Levi cheered Hange up, but didn't address her slip of heart. Then, Levi and Hange left the forest, seemingly determined to leave their ambivalent thoughts in the forest.
Killing Zeke, the right choice from the perspective of honor and duty, won this round.
Yet Hange's slip of heart clearly lingered in the back of Levi's mind.
When Levi overheard Hange and Pieck's conversation, which didn't involve him at all, he felt the need to comment on this.
Tumblr media
This is extremely unusual and interesting.
When has Levi ever commented on others' love lives in the manga? The only time Levi remotely did so was years ago when Mikasa constantly prioritized Eren over their squad missions. As the squad leader, Levi said something along the line of, "I don't understand your obsession with him, but don't mess up this time."
(We all know how that obsession began. On hindsight, Levi's confusion foreshadowed his own future romance. Hange took care of Levi the way Eren took care of Mikasa, sparkling Ackerman' romantic attachment of a lifetime. )
Tumblr media
Back to Levi's unusual, unnecessary, unsolicited comment.
Note he waited a bit for Pieck to leave to make sure it was a private conversation between him and Hange.
Levi said:
相変わらず巨人とは片想いのままだなクソメガネ
It roughtly translates as:
Your love has been unrequitted only with Titans, four eyes.
Tumblr media
There is a Youtube video explaining the Japanese grammar of Levi's line, its hidden romantic connotation, as well as his bold choice of word for "love". The English translation loses all the nuance.
Besides, Hange's response isn't "I will charm her", but rather "We will become good friends". There is no romantic suggestion in her line regarding Pieck.
Simply put, Levi took the opportunity to express his feelings in an awkward and clumsy way. Unfortunately, Hange failed to pick up on that. I honestly think the look on Levi's face would have helped him be understood. But they stood with their backs to each other.
Fast forward to Levi and Hange's farewell.
The Survey Corps slogan is 心臓を捧げよ, aka Devote the Heart, without specifying whose heart it is.
It is supposed to mean devoting one's heart — represented by one's fist — to humanity.
(The gesture is based on human heart's anatomical structure: an individual's heart and fist are of similar size and shape.)
Levi's fist is Levi's heart.
In this iconic scene, Levi altered the Survey Corps' solute gesture to devote his heart to Hange, hence her shocked expression.
Tumblr media
Hange, despite on the verge of tears, brushed it off with a laugh, pretending she doesn't understand the gesture. She left him to fulfill her duty as the Commander.
When meeting her fallend comrades in the Path, she heard Erwin say:
"Hange, you've fulfilled your duty."
(duty , or 役目 in the original Japanese manga. Remember this word)
Tumblr media
As for Levi, he had to stay strong as the last veteran to lead the squad.
But you can see cracks through his tough facade. Like, he couldn't bring himself to look at what happened to Hange outside the window. Pieck, arguably one of the most perceptive characters, noticed this.
Tumblr media
Or, when he directed kids' attention away, buying himself a moment to let agony take over.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Levi was clearly in the depths of pain and loss, triggered by Hange's death.
He was thinking. At this point we are just not sure what exactly went through his mind.
Tumblr media
Levi's thoughts were revealed three chapters later, in chapter 136, in the form of a monologue.
His thoughts, under an intimidating image of Erwin in his mind, revolve around duty (役目).
Tumblr media
Yep, the exact same word used in Hange's after-death scene with Erwin in chapter 132. I circled out the word 役目.
Tumblr media
Hange and Levi didn't dare to abandon their duties in the forest to live together; Hange eventually died for hers.
Erwin's intimidating face in Levi's mind was a reminder that he needed to fulfill his duty — to kill Zeke. By far Levi appeared compliant, which makes his inner thoughts even more shocking.
Let's examine his first monologue line:
俺達の役目は  あそこで終わりだったのかもしれない
It roughly translates as:
"Our duty .... may have ended there."
There: the moment he swore his oath to Erwin four years ago.
Tumblr media
He wanted to dump his oath from the beginning !!!
Because it was this very oath that pushed him and Hange out of the forest, hence the grievance — or even resentment, I would say — towards the oath.
But abandoning the oath is not enough to prevent her death. In Hange's after-death scene, she complained to Erwin that being Commander was too tough.
Levi's next monologue line:
ガキ共をとど/海に届ける そこまでの役目だったとしたら
It roughtly translates as:
"We got those brats to the sea, if that's where our duty ended..."
Tumblr media
Why end their duties at the sea?
Because after they reached the sea, Hange's burden as Commander grew increasingly heavy, eventually leading to her death.
Between Hange assuming the position of Commander and the expedition to the sea, things went quite smoothly. It only took a sour turn afterward.
Tumblr media
In other words, Levi regretted not ending their duties four or three years earlier. He wanted to keep Hange alive and happy.
He wanted to live an alternative life with her.
Levi's next monologue questioned the inhumane side of Survey Corps' "devote the heart" indoctrination — the very tenet that drove Hange to go on the suicidal mission.
It was also the biggest reason Levi didn't dare to stop her: their fallen comrades were watching.
Remember her last words to Levi?
"You understand, Levi. I have a feeling.... It's my turn."
Tumblr media
I will leave the detailed analysis for another day, but let's focus on Levi's regrets for now.
If you look at Levi's monologue in chapter 136 independently, on its own, it's beyond confusing, out of blue and out of place. Why would he suddenly think "our duty may have ended four years ago" in the middle of a deadly war?
The only logical explanation is that he had been ruminating on their duty the whole time.
Now we know what exactly went through Levi's mind.
Fascinatingly, there are some other clues.
One lies in the name of this chapter -  心臓を捧げよ (Devote the Heart) -  a strong indication of the link between Levi's inner thoughts with his painful farewell to Hange in chapter 132.
Tumblr media
Another glaring clue lies in "duty".
Isayama sensei even used the same Japanese word 役目 for duty in chapter 132 and chapter 136  to imply that Levi's monologue on duty was triggered by Hange's death.
In fact, the image of oath swearing in Levi's mind is reverted to imply the 180-degree shift from commitment to regret.
Before Levi's injury and Levihan's forest scene: commitement
Tumblr media
After Hange's death: regret
Tumblr media
The table has turned.
Right after Levi broke free the shackles of his oath, Zeke appeared. Levi killed him with one swift swing of sword. No torture for revenge this time, unlike before.
The Rumbling stopped. As Connie supported an injured Levi,  he said: " It's not that I don't have regrets. But ... we stopped the Rumbling, it's the right thing to do, right?”
Tumblr media
Connie doesn't have a story arc of regret or lack thereof.
It's more likely him voicing Levi's hidden regrets and Levi's changed intent in killing Zeke — not for revenge, but to stop the Rumbling.
It explains Levi's expression as he slightly looked up, staring into the void, clearly consumed by his inner turmoil with something or someone in his mind.
Tumblr media
Levi wanted to end their missions years earlier for an alternative life with Hange. It's an IF scenario.
In essence, IF is to go back in time, making different choices.
In case there's any confusion about his regrets, he made it clear in his monologue that he doesn't regret letting Erwin go.
Tumblr media
Well, Levi's syringe choice is another puzzle with a twist, no less stunning than the twist in his oath arc. I'd say it's a love letter from Levi to the woman with sparkling eyes, an innocent dream and a selfless spirit.
But the analysis may cause some controversy and wrath from certain fandoms, so please let me savor it for myself for now.
*
LeviHan is a fascinating, heart-breaking and complete arc. Hange's part is comparatively clear, while Levi's part is more in the dark, requiring quite some efforts to piece together the whole puzzle.
I will probably write about the heart arc, later.
In the final chapter 139,  Levi's last panel focuses on his scar.
The pain and regrets will never really go away, because of the "what ifs" — of what could have been with her.

Hot take that may make everyone hate me but I think about this all of the time. Disclaimer: everyone can have their own opinions!
If we’re talking about canon Levi, the Levi written by Isayama and supported by his official editors, he’s not going to have a love interest. In fact, it wouldn’t make sense to ship him with anyone, but Erwin, and probably not in a romantic context.
Yes, Isayama says that Levi does not have romantic feelings for anyone/does not have a romantic love interest. However, he also emphasizes the bond between both men. He says that Levi prioritizes Erwin’s orders (source: 2017 Shingeki no Kyojin Character Directory, p. 157) and that “Levi doesn’t allow anyone to get at his heart except Erwin who is the only one he completely trusts.” (ATTACK ON TITAN: OUTSIDE OSAMU, 2013). This man has a respect and vulnerability only saved for Erwin. Erwin was an irreplaceable existence for Levi. So perhaps these men did not have a romance, but it wouldn’t be called a “friendship” either. Levi is said to have mentioned that he doesn’t bother explaining his relationship with Erwin to others because they wouldn’t get it. It’s difficult to explain and he really doesn’t care how people interpret it. So in my eyes, their bond expands beyond romance. It’s unbreakable and deep in ways that maybe are too complicated to just be labeled as a romance. Canonically there is love there for certain.
Knowing that Levi has chosen Erwin as his “liege” or ackerbonded person (Yes, the ackerbond is real: sources the Guidebook from Isayama himself source 1; source 2) makes me really question why he has so many other ships. Honestly, I feel this way for every Ackerman (thinking of Mikasa especially). Because again, if we are talking about canon Levi, whoever he is involved with romantically would always be second to Erwin. His duties and desire to protect Erwin will always take precedent. I’m all for other ships but it’s when people are like “this ship with this person and Levi is definitely objectively canon”…no it’s not.  It can’t be. It’s actually the reason I can’t ship him with other people. The other person in the ship deserves someone who can love them to their fullest. I’m not saying Levi is incapable of loving others due to his bond with Erwin. I think this post sums it up perfectly: Levi is a very compassionate person and has shown his care for so many in so many ways. It’s the fact that Erwin will always come first for him. An example of this is found during the “I’ll break your legs” conversation where Levi demands that Erwin stays behind despite being their leading commander (great analysis about this here) even with the risk of other soldiers dying being increased without the strategy of their commanding officer, Levi wants Erwin to stay. He knows this mission is dangerous, hence why he is trying to convince Erwin not to go. He again is putting Erwin before all others. He may not be expecting all of the soldiers to perish, especially because Levi himself intends to be there, but he is certainly increasing their risk of death and he knows this.
Think for example about Hange. He says Hange can lead during this dangerous battle in Shiganshina, and while Hange is a very capable soldier, he’s more willing to put them in the forefront despite their inexperience being a full commander yet or even leading a charge. If it means keeping Erwin safe and away from danger, so be it. Often times people look to the scene of them in the forest as a great Levihan moment. It’s a very touching scene in general, one of my favorites between them (the first being when Hange kicks that chair and Levi judges tf out of them xD). And at the same time, Levi prioritizes Erwin in this scene. Hange suggests staying and Levi says no for many reasons, and one of those reasons is unarguably because he wants to kill Zeke. He wants to fulfill this last duty. A duty that he associates with Erwin. A duty that he reiterates time and time again throughout the rest of the story. Another example is when he lets Erwin go. I saw post where they talked about this and it makes so much sense. Levi let Erwin die, knowing that Hange would have to step up and be commander, whether they wanted to or not. That did not matter in that moment to Levi, because for him, this personal choice he made was about “letting Erwin rest” (he says this) took priority over considering the implications this would have for Hange. And yes, letting Erwin rest was not the only reason that Levi chose Armin but it’s also been stated that it’s the main one (Isayama’s answers in the 2017 Attack on Titan Character Encyclopedia).
In the end, being commander causes Hange a lot of stress and they struggle with whether they are good enough. As I mentioned, the same goes for the forest scene, Levi is choosing the something he associates with Erwin (killing the beast titan) over Hange. Here’s a post where it’s talked more too. Hange deserves someone who puts them first! I’m not saying Levi does not care for Hange. He does. He shows his love and care for them throughout the story. The friendship between them is amazing but it is a very different relationship than the one that Levi has with Erwin. His care for others is very different than his care for Erwin. These are reasons I can only support and perceive Levi and Hange as a friendship (not to mention that whenever they are shipped with Levi it takes precedence over Hange’s character and even gender [always perceived as a woman in the ship despite their character being ambiguous in the original manga work] but those are topics for another time)
Don’t even get me started on the Eren and Levi ship. We won’t go there in detail because I refuse to entertain this idea, but again, canonically, most of their interactions are negative and you know…the biggest issue is the whole p3dophilia thing. Even if you’re talking a grown Eren, that’s grooming, my guy.
So I don’t know, I think it’s interesting to see how the fandom interprets these things and everyone is entitled to do this the way they please. It’s just so straight forward in my brain because of how Isayama has set things out.
Of course not everything has to be canon and creativity can be much more fun they strictly sticking to the original work. Not everything needs to be canon in order to have fun with ships! These are fictional characters after all. I think the part that confuses me is when people claim how real, true, or canon something is when we’ve already been given all of the pieces.

I love this clip so much. Even though this is supposed to be Moblit's clip, how he and Gunther praised their superiors and vice versa, the Levihan vibe is too strong to ignore.
- Casually walking into a room together, banter a little and then casually walked out together again. Like why!?!?
- Why do Levi and Hange need to go to the forest to do a performance review of Moblit and Gunther? And what were they talking about before that?
- Bad habit eh, how long have you been eavesdropping on Hange, Moblit?
- I like the Trust topic revolving around Levi's squad. Brings me back to the Female titan scene where Eren was talking about Levi trusting his squad.

LeviHan Analysis of chapter 132:
I’m surprised I haven’t seen a single person (yet) discuss this scene. Levi is talking about Hange not forgetting him: (The lines were changed in the anime, but that’s understandable because his lines are vague and can be misinterpreted. ;)
Tumblr media
Levi says “…you still want me asleep in bed? You’re going to forget I even exist if I rest any longer.” He uses the word “You” and “You’re” which implies only 1 person. Why would Armin forget he exists? Do you really think he's worried about Armin forgetting him? Why would Armin still want him in bed? The person who wants Levi to rest THE MOST and has been making sure he stays asleep, is Hange. He drags himself out of bed because he doesn’t want Hange to “forget” him. Especially because Hange, chapter 126, had recently confessed her love to Levi.
In his next line, he says “…anyway.” AS IF HE WAS TALKING TO HIMSELF. 😂 He then continues and is Now speaking to Armin.
Another thing, doesn’t this line seem a little random for him to be openly admiting this outloud to Armin? Levi is very honest, but he rarely voices his feelings out-loud when he’s struggling with something. Unless he’s with Hange. (He tells her everything.) And a lot of the times it’s in a roundabout way. This line is one of his most straightforward confessions. “I don’t want you to forget me.”
If he Was talking to Armin, do you really think his main concern here is Only Armin forgetting him? Why would he be concerned about Only Armin or Specifically Armin forgetting him? Now of course he wouldn’t Want to be forgotten by Armin, and the same goes for the scouts, but why would he voice that Only to him, and not include the REST of the scouts? He could have said “You guys are going to forget I even exist.” 🤔
Levi has done this “talking out loud” to Hange, when she isn’t there, 2 other times:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One can assume Hange was with him while he was trying to sleep, because the cabins only have one bed and Levi can Only sleep if Hange is with him. Levi is supposed to be resting (Hange’s wishes), but Hange leaves him to converse with Yelena. I’m guessing they got interrupted/notified with information about Yelena, that’s how he’s aware of Yelena being conscious again. He doesn’t really need to talk to Yelena because Hange will relay that information back to him. Plus he's not the biggest fan of Yelena 🧔🏼‍♀️😂, so I don’t think he really cares about listening to her. He just wants to be with Hange! ☹️ This is also the chapter that Hange dies in, so that line is foreshadowing. ☝🏻👥
After the forest scene, Levi and Hange aren’t shown interacting with each other, until his line of unrequited love for titans. The reason for that is because Hange and Levi already decided, in the forest, not to let their feelings get in the way of their duties. (They’re always putting humanity first! 💪🏻) Re-read chapters 127-132 and notice how often Levi looks for Hange, and tries to get her attention. (Especially when he’s trying to sleep and she leaves his side.) This line here, from Levi, is One of his last desperate attempts to get Hange’s attention. (It’s the 1st one, out of 4, during chapter 132.) ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once you realize that Levi was talking about Hange with his line here, it makes things EVEN more depressing! AHHHHHH knife to the heart. 🗡️💔🥹😫🫡😵‍💫🦑

Slightly Delusional Take on Levihan
To add to the alreasy tall pile of Levihan theories, in the last phrase that Levi says to Hange, the "camera" really zooms in on his sad boy eyes and, as everyone has seen, he tells them, "Dedicate your heart." His eyes seem almost dead inside, but maybe we can interpret the expression as resignation.
As we have seen, Levi and Hange grow a little bit apart, or rather, they build up a big pile of unsaid topics. In the scene where Hange reaffirms the values of the Survey Corps, a manga panel zooms in solely on Levi's expression. In the forest scene, she tries to say things she isn't expecting him to hear, but he brings up the idea of running away and rejects it, because they both know it won't end well.
Five minutes later, I've lost my train of thought entirely, but my original idea was to translate Levi's expression, paired with "Dedicate your heart," as resignation. Almost like unrequited love, but it isn't that. Hange and Levi had moments shown where they had to remind themselves of their duties over their emotions, so this was just the closure that gave him the opportunity to resign himself to that reality. This entire post originated from the idea that Hange was saying, "I've got this cool thing going on [I'm really trying to do the right thing], don't ruin this for me/don't stop me [and it's really fragile, so just let me go, please]" because we all know she needs a mental breakdown. Her entire demeanor kind of reads as "Please forgive me" as well, and in response, Levi basically says, "If you can't dedicate your heart to me, dedicate your heart to this. I forgive you."
This was all probably very apparent, but it just clicked for me, so it is okay.
Also, I think a big trope for love stories is that the characters have a way of saying "I love you" without saying it directly. The most popular example I've seen is from the Princess Bride, I believe, where the guy is always saying "As you wish" (??? Something like this?). Maybe Levi and Hange have this "Dedicate your heart" as a step-in for "I love you/I forgive you," reminding one another over and over that it's all okay.
Further delusional, farfetched, and biased evidence about Levi dedicating his heart to her (as some have claimed): the size of your fist is roughly the size of your heart, and your heart beats on the left side of your body.

levi and hange is the trickest relationship on aot fandom to speak about it because it's not as distant as people make it sound, but it's not as deep either. they don't have a deep connection canonically and levi is not interested on it, canonically. he does respects them and stand by their side and they share that heartfelt moment before their suicidal charge but the forest scene solidified how disconnected they are. hange is talking all that because they think they're talking alone and it's very intimate the things they reveal only for levi not only admit that he listened all of it but he also dismiss and ignore even though hange just saved his life. he downright asks about zeke. his mind was focused on this. this, with the canon manga interactions ACWNR included and Isayama's interviews on levihan (which I can only recall two, none of it very positive, one of them calling their friendship one sided) its evidence enough that nothing could come out of that but a sense of respect and comraderie.

Mainly a post about levihan but I have tried imagining different scenarios wherein Hange did not have to die, where an ending involved them… looking back though, knowing what they're up against, risking any titan shifter really is not an option for the team… they could just not lose any of them to have a big chance of winning against Eren and stopping the rumble. Many have been saying why couldn't it be Jean that battled the wall colossal titans? While it is true he is told to be exemplary at using ODM gear among his class, our Captain Commander Hange would not be able to bear to sacrifice yet another life of their subordinate. I just could not imagine how greatly it would break Hange's heart and will had they deliberately ordered Jean to do so.
This feat, however, was viewed by many as Hange's suicide rather than a sacrifice… both are true whichever way one would put it.
It is a sacrifice for those of their team to not have a heavy burden to carry on their shoulders to decide who will be left behind, because let's face it, then and there all of them knew that in order to delay the wall colossal titans' movement, one of them should and will be left behind. It was a cold, sad, gruesome fact that I believe Hange did not want any of them to live through. BUT, I also saw it as their way out.
They were just tired… the whole truth that unraveled was so disappointing, I was actually surprised they were able to keep such a composure that made them last until Chapter 132. I can only imagine how dumbfounded Hange was when they have learned that titans are once humans, and that the one person they protected and believed to be a new hope would now be the exact opposite. It was heartbreaking… their appointment as the 14th Captain Commander could also not have come at a worse time, and it was actually relatable in a sense where we were somehow forced to have responsibilities at a young age that we did not fully understand. They saw the opportunity. They grabbed it…
But let's delve in with how the conversation went with Levi. Shinzou sasageyo-- spoken only once by the Heichou, but how powerful and cinematic was it to have him speak those words to the only person he has left at such a time. Oh but I knew that Hange knew if Levi stopped them from going, they would have second thoughts. What once an unbreakable commitment to die will be easily thrown out if only Levi said "Stay." consequently telling him to just let them go.
Isayama would not waste 3 panels showing emotions through Levi's eyes before telling Hange to dedicate their heart if the latter was not important to the captain, and what a beautiful moment it was~ I will be forever grateful to Isayama for not cutting short on that moment, for taking the time to draw those 3 panels of Levi's eyes, and Hange's panel showing astonishment, for letting Levi call Hange "Four eyes" for the last time. That moment was excruciatingly heartbreaking, but it was perfect in its own way… because it was not ~cut short~, and to choose to say "See you later, Hange. Please watch over me." instead of goodbye was so symbolic of the love Levi had to let go but did not want to.
Personally, I do not see Levi and Hange as a romantic couple, but more of platonic soulmates, comparable to one's bestfriend whom you can call at 2 in the morning asking if they believe in God, and the one you would give a handmade bracelet and would not be embarrassed to wear it, that type of platonic relationship. It's difficult not to attest to LeviHan ship when Isayama created so many subtle but not meaningless encounters between the two. One great example was the forest scene right after Hange rescued Levi, and let us not forget their complementary eye injuries. Some may say that fans are ridiculously exagerrating the connections, and that we give too much meaning to scenes that happened just because they did, that they are only coincidences… but Isayama, the great artist that he is, would not make coincidences, especially reoccurring ones.

I just saw that post you shared from TW and I wanted to get some things off my chest.
There’s no need to write a pathetic piece desperately trying to downplay Hanji’s impact to Levi. Erwin and Hanji are both important to him. THATS FUCKING CANON! I’m so tired reading the same “Levi encouraged Erwin to use Hanjis squad as a bait to save his life. Therefore Levi doesn’t give a shit about Hanji and is in love with Erwin.” ERWIN IS THEIR COMMANDER AND HIS SAFETY IS A PRIORITY! That's literally how the military chain of command is preserved! Hanji would’ve done the same thing in Levi’s place without a doubt. ”Levi still mentions Erwin even though he is dead for four years.” DUUUUHHH?!Of course he still thinks about him and his promise to him! All the scouts along with Erwin died to give him the opportunity to kill zeke and he fucking failed! Of course he is eager to finish the job! And for the love of god stop using the “I’m championing for LGBT ships and you are dismissing roori becase they are gay.” Girl, roori is the least dismissed ship out there. They are literally one of the biggest army of shippers out there and theres no shortage of people defending them all the time. Also, levihan isn’t a even a straight ship?! Did they miss the whole thing where Isayama changed Hanjis pronouns in the manga?I also hate how whoever wrote this feels like their personal interpretation is the only thing that matters and ours is wrong and invalid. All that shit they are presenting about Levi and Erwin should be interpreted as romantic but those between Levi and Hange no matter how emotional and intimate should not?Grow up!If levihan bothers you so much block and mute people.Do what you gotta do to keep away from the content you dont want to see!Let people enjoy hamless shit.
I have a lot to say about every paragraph of that post, but i honestly don't care for wasting my time on someone who chooses to read the manga with their eyes closed.
Remember when that central MP told Levi that Erwin is captured and will be hanged and offered to let him go if he just gives himself in? Levi said "no", even though he should want to protect Erwin's life no matter what according to them, right? Instead Levi said "Some lives are more valuable than the others.". At that moment he prioritized the lives of Eren and Historia over Erwin.
Also "he never thought about Hange" after they died is hilariously incorrect. He told Hange to "keep watching". He followed their theory that killing Zeke might sever Eren's connection to the paths and stop the rumbling. He also used the knowledge he got from them to quickly asses that the Ackermans and shifters are immune to the titan gas and lead everyone to kill Eren.
He literally thought about them as he was having his internal monologue. They were at the front of his mind so to speak and the only active character in the panels, while everyone else was a passive listener.
He saw them among every other survey corps member when he gave them his final salute.
Years later he saw a plane fly by that reminded him of the day he lost them and erooris clowning about that panel saying "HaNgE iS A PLaNe" are just completely braindead and don't understand literary symbolism.
There are too many scenes that showed Levi cares deeply about Hange and the fact he prioritized **the freaking commander of the survey corps** at some point does not negate that he has almost been hit by Zeke's rocks worrying about their safety and that he stopped in the middle of an intense battle to make Armin protect them when they got injured.
In the forest afrer finding out what happened to Zeke (because Zeke was the last thing he remembers before the explosion??) he immediately brought the conversation to Hange's expressed feelings and gave them much needed encouragement.
Anyway. Erooris clearly are seething because all they have is the promise which, although was made to Erwin, was really about All the dead survey corps members. The moment between them was nowhere near on the level of intimacy and vulnerability that 126 and 132 had. They are clearly green with envy.
When the shippes choose to talk shit about "a rival ship" rather than talking about their own content this is how you know they have no leg to stand on.
Yes, Levi cared about Erwin deeply, yes, his loyalty to him was amazing, but he has done things to Hange he has done to nobody else and Hange was the only person who witnessed him at his most vulnerable and soft and all of it was meant for them alone.
